Additional Power and Range, Same Price: New Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer Plug-in Hybrid

  • New: Now with 144 kW (196 hp) system output and electrified seven-speed dual-clutch transmission
  • Additional range: Electric range of up to 83 kilometres (combined (EAER) acc. to WLTP1) with 17.2 kWh battery
  • Order books open: Astra Plug-in Hybrid from €38,460, Astra Sports Tourer Plug-in Hybrid from €39,960 (all prices RRP incl. VAT in Germany)

Sporty, elegant, practical, comfortable and highly efficient: these are the qualities that distinguish the Opel Astra and Opel Astra Sports Tourer. In addition, the compact class bestsellers offer a variety of drives like no other Opel model. Battery-electric, as a plug-in hybrid, with a highly efficient combustion engine and also as a hybrid with 48-volt technology – customers have the full choice, which is now becoming even more attractive. Because from now on, Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer are available with a new plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The advantages for customers are manifold: With 144 kW (196 hp), the new plug-in hybrid offers an increase in output of 11 kW (16 hp) compared to the previous version. At the same time, a larger battery enables additional electric range; Consumption and energy demand, on the other hand, are reduced. And thanks to the new transmission, drivers and passengers enjoy more driving comfort.

“For those who want to drive particularly dynamically and responsibly at the same time without already being fully electric, the new plug-in hybrid in the Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer is exactly the right choice. 144 kW (196 hp) of system power and 360 Newton metres of torque promise brisk driving pleasure. In addition, with the plug-in hybrid customers have the advantage of conserving energy for when it is required. For example, they can switch to purely electric operation in the city. This gives them the freedom to always choose their preferred drive type,” said Opel Germany brand boss Patrick Dinger.

New Opel Astra Plug-in Hybrid is now available for prices starting at €38,460 – and thus not a cent more expensive than before. The starting price for its estate counterpart, Opel Astra Sports Tourer Plug-in Hybrid, is also unchanged at €39,960 (all prices RRP incl. VAT in Germany). The compact-class models thus complement the brand's modernised plug-in hybrid portfolio. The new Opel Grandland is also available with the next-generation plug-in hybrid drive.

New Opel Astra Plug-in Hybrid: Electric range of up to 83 kilometres (combined (EAER) according to WLTP 1)

Those not yet ready to go on all-electric holiday trips, but wanting to commute or drive into the city with zero local emissions, can simply choose the highly efficient plug-in hybrid drive for the Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer. With 144 kW (196 hp) of system output and 360 Newton metres of maximum torque in combination with the new electrified seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, driving pleasure is guaranteed. The five-door accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds (Sports Tourer: 7.7 seconds); the top speed is 225 km/h.

The exemplary interaction of the combustion engine and electric motor ensures balanced performance. The 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine has an output of 110 kW (150 hp). The electric motor of the front-wheel drive car now contributes up to 92 kW (125 hp) instead of 81 kW (110 hp). For emissions-free operation in city traffic and urban areas, the electric mode can simply be selected. Thanks to the increased battery capacity of 17.2 kWh (instead of 12.4 kWh previously) the all-electric and thus locally emissions-free range in accordance with WLTP 1 is up by 26 kilometres to up to 83 kilometres. The new 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine also provides exemplary figures, further reducing fuel consumption. For example, Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer plug-in hybrids require only 12.7-13.1 kWh of electricity and 2.2-2.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres 2 (previously 16.3-16.5 kWh of electricity and 1.3 litres).

The new electrified seven-speed dual-clutch transmission increases driving comfort. In contrast to the six-speed dual-clutch transmission used in the hybrid with 48-volt technology, it has an additional gear and has been optimised for the higher performance of the plug-in hybrid.

In addition, new Opel Astra Plug-in Hybrid comes with numerous modern technologies and comfort features as standard in every variant. They range from the multimedia infotainment system, each with a ten-inch colour touchscreen and driver information display, to wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to the keyless start system ‘Keyless Start’.

[1] Range values determined according to WLTP test procedure methodology (R (EC) No. 715/2007, R (EU) No. 2017/1151). The actual range can vary under everyday conditions and depends on various factors, in particular on personal driving style, route characteristics, outside temperature, use of heating and air conditioning and thermal preconditioning.

[2] A vehicle's values not only depend on the vehicle's efficient use of fuel, but are also influenced by driving behaviour and other non-technical factors.

Long-Distance Champion: All-New Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid

  • Fully charged and refuelled: New top-of-line SUV covers 1,115 kilometres
  • ‘Electro’ SUV: In test, GS trim plug-in hybrid covers 380 kilometres locally emissions-free without recharging thanks to recuperation
  • Ideal for fleets and individuals: Drivetrain perfect for anyone who commutes fully electrically and wants to cover long distances in a particularly resource-efficient way

All-new Opel Grandland impresses with its attractive styling, groundbreaking technologies, clever solutions, lots of space and completely electrified range of drivetrains. ‘Golden Steering Wheel 2024’2 winner is available as fully electric Opel Grandland Electric, Opel Grandland Hybrid with 48-volt technology and powerful Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid. Team around Opel Grandland chief engineer Dirk Kaminski has now put the clever plug-in hybrid drive concept to test – with astonishing results that will impress company car and long-distance drivers.

“WLTP values 3 are clear: According to the official test cycle, our new Grandland Plug-in Hybrid offers a combined range of up to 897 kilometres, of which up to 87 kilometres are purely electric,” said Dirk Kaminski. “But we thought to ourselves: Let’s see what the car can really do. Our new top-of-the-range SUV will definitely break 1,000-kilometre mark with a full tank and a full charge. After all, Opel Grandland is 'made in Germany' through and through and rolls off assembly line in ultra-modern Eisenach factory. So we put it to test – under conditions that are worse than in official test cycle.”

From full to empty: 1,115 kilometres covered under adverse conditions

While WLTP values are determined at temperatures of around 23 degrees Celsius, all-new Grandland Plug-in Hybrid set off on a windy and rainy January morning at a fresh 11 degrees Celsius. And – appropriate for the season – on 19-inch winter tyres instead of summer tyres with lower rolling resistance and in the fully-equipped GS trim. Only requirement was: “SUV has a full tank and the 17.9 kWh battery is fully charged. Now we drive until the fuel tank and battery are empty.”

Plug-in hybrid completed typical commuter routes from Rhine-Main area around Rüsselsheim and Frankfurt to Rhine-Neckar area and back again. Routes included motorway stretches with free-flowing traffic, with stop-and-go traffic and rush-hour traffic, as well as country roads and city traffic including traffic light stops – a real-life test that reflects the true everyday requirements of many company car drivers.

Result or the distance that Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid, which delivers 143 kW (195 hp) system output and 350 Newton meters of maximum torque, achieved with just one tank filling and battery charge, exceeded the expectations of the Opel team: at an average speed of 80 km/h and a highly efficient overall average consumption of 4.6 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, SUV covered a total of 1,115 kilometres in four stages (interrupted by breaks to meet the legal requirements to adhere to driving times). Of this, the plug-in hybrid drove a little more than a third of the total distance, or more precisely 380 kilometres, purely battery-electric and therefore locally emissions-free.

Opel Grandland chief engineer - Dirk Kaminski

“Fact that Grandland achieves such outstanding values under these circumstances – at the end of the test temperatures had dropped to just 4 degrees Celsius – has once again confirmed that we have created a car that is groundbreaking in every respect with a drive concept that is completely suitable for everyday use. Highly efficient combustion engine and the electric motor work in perfect harmony,” said Kaminski. “More than that: every time you decelerate, powertrain switches to electric operation. This is possible because the recuperated energy is used to power the car electrically meaning that long distances can be covered at low and medium speeds with no local emissions.”

‘Greenovation’ à la Opel: Resource-saving SUV and drive concept

All-new Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid therefore shines as the ideal choice for fully electric commuter routes as well as for long-distance company car and leisure drivers who want to be particularly resource-efficient and leave range anxiety behind. Not only the use of recycled materials and the absence of chrome show what Opel means by ‘Greenovation’ and sustainability in new top-of-line SUV. This is also impressively demonstrated by results of  test.

Numerous other qualities of completely new Opel Grandland make daily business trips as well as long journeys even more pleasant: ergonomic seats certified by Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. (AGR) ensure relaxed driving pleasure. Patented Intelli-Seat ergonomic feature is standard on all front seats. And with technologies such as glare-free IntelliLux HD light, Intelli-HUD head-up display or illuminated, translucent Pixel Box, Opel Grandland drivers are perfectly equipped.

At the end of the test, one final question remains: What distance would all-new Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid be able to cover with a full tank and full battery under ideal test conditions – for example, in early summer? “Insights that we as a team have gained from the 1,115 kilometres we have now driven is: Under optimal conditions, even more would certainly be possible,” said Dirk Kaminski.

All-new Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid with 143 kW (195 hp) system output, 350 Nm of maximum torque and a top speed of 220 km/h can be ordered from prices starting at €40,150 (RRP including VAT in Germany).

All-new Opel Grandland celebrated its world premiere in Eisenach this spring. The general public could see it up close for the first time at the festivities marking 125 years of automotive production in Rüsselsheim. Customers will be able to order the top-of-the-line SUV “made in Germany” from October 10 and will have a choice of three electrified drivetrains. Prices for all-new Opel Grandland Hybrid with 48-volt technology start at €36,400 (all prices RRP including VAT in Germany). Alternatively, customers will be able to opt for the plug-in hybrid variant for prices starting at €40,150. And Opel Grandland Electric will also be available with a 157 kW (213 hp) electric motor, 345 Nm of torque, 73 kWh battery (net capacity) and a locally emissions-free range of up to 523 kilometres (WLTP 1) from €46,750. Furthermore, the battery-electric SUV will be offered with 82 kWh battery (net capacity) and a locally emissions-free range of up to 582 kilometres (WLTP 1) in the extensively equipped GS trim for prices starting at €51,950. But that is not all. The new Grandland is the first Opel based on the BEV-native STLA Medium platform. With the 97 kWh battery, which will be available soon, the Grandland Electric will be able to cover up to around 700 kilometres (WLTP 1) between charging stops. One thing all Grandland variants have in common: They all offer numerous innovative technologies, clever features and sustainable solutions along with a stunning appearance thanks to the new 3D Vizor – which even comes with illuminated Blitz emblem in the GS trim.

“With the groundbreaking Opel Experimental study, we gave a preview of the future of our brand. The new Opel Grandland, which will be available to order shortly, makes many visionary innovations a reality for customers It is a bold, clever and pure SUV that was designed and engineered in Rüsselsheim and is built in Eisenach. And the future-proof drive portfolio leaves nothing to be desired,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.

Electrifying newcomer: Stunning SUV with practical solutions

Stylish and dynamic, spacious and versatile with a fully electrified drivetrain portfolio – this is the new Opel Grandland. The new top-of-the-line SUV brings visions to life – starting with the design. The 3D Vizor with illuminated Blitz logo proudly sitting at the centre immediately attracts the eye while the permanently illuminated “OPEL” lettering at the rear makes a clear statement.

The visual highlights underline the impressive stance of the largest Opel SUV. The new Grandland generation has a vehicle length of 4.65 metres, a width of around 1.93 metres and a height of 1.66 metres. This makes the new Grandland 173 millimetres longer, 36 millimetres higher and 49 millimetres wider than its predecessor. This increase in size benefit both the passengers and the luggage compartment. The 2,795-millimetre long wheelbase and the long roofline which flows into the tailgate increase the space available. Passengers in the second row benefit from 20 millimetres more legroom. The rear seats can be folded down 40:20:40 and thus, create a load volume of up to 1,645 litres.

In the cockpit the slightly driver-oriented 10- or 16-inch central display and high centre console generate a sporty feeling. Behind the steering wheel, a discrete wide and fully digital cluster provides essential information, allowing the driver to focus on the pleasure of driving and, in combination with the Intelli-HUD head-up display, avoiding the need to take their eyes off the road. Drivers also have the option of triggering the Pure Mode. This reduces the content on the driver information cluster and the central display and ensures even less distraction when driving at night or at high speeds. In typical Opel tradition, frequently used settings such as climate control can also be operated intuitively via a few remaining buttons.

The ergonomic seats with individually adjustable side cushions, certified by Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V., also ensure pure and, above all, relaxed driving pleasure. The patented Intelli-Seat ergonomics feature is already standard on all front seats. A special slot in the middle of the seat reduces pressure on the tailbone and increases driving comfort, even on long tours on the motorway. And true to Opel’s “Greenovation” approach, 100% of fabrics and coverings in the interior are made from materials with recycled content.

Practical and innovative solutions such as the Pixel Box, which comes as standard depending on the trim level, also make the journey more enjoyable. With the illuminated translucid glass and the fabric wrapping, this element not only enhances the visual appeal of the console – it is also highly functional. The wireless smartphone charger is located behind the glass so that devices can be charged while being stored safely. The constant visibility of the smartphone also helps to ensure that it is not forgotten in the vehicle when leaving the Grandland.

Storage compartments such as the phone pockets in the backrests of the front seats or the large storage under the central console which also accommodates a 12V socket represent further clever storage space.

Elsewhere, Opel’s new top-of-the-line SUV comes with an extensive array of driver assistance systems including Automatic Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Adaptation, and In Crash Braking. Parking and manoeuvring is also made easier by park pilots at front and rear, the rear-view camera with automatic cleaning function and the 360-degree Intelli-Vision camera. And the glare-free IntelliLux HD light, which for the first time in the new Grandland has more than 50,000 elements, increases safety when driving in the dark.

“Greenovation” a la Opel: Electrified, free of chrome and with recycled materials

Opel demonstrates its “Greenovation” approach by using recycled materials in the interior, not using chrome and purely offering electrified drivetrains. This approach not only benefits the climate, it is also good for the driving performance of the new Grandland – the first Opel to benefit from the Stellantis STLA Medium platform, which was specifically designed for battery-electric models. The new Grandland has particularly flat battery packaging as well as numerous energy-saving features including the heat pump, which is standard in Germany. With the Grandland Electric, which will be available from prices starting at €46,750 and including a 73 kWh battery (net capacity), up to 523 kilometres (WLTP 1) can be covered between charging stops. For €51,950 the Grandland Electric will be available in the extensively equipped GS trim with an 82 kWh battery and the range increases to 582 kilometres (WLTP 1). The 97 kWh battery will soon be able to cover up to around 700 kilometres (WLTP 1) with zero local emissions. And if the Grandland does need to be recharged, it takes less than 30 minutes to charge to 80 percent of the battery capacity at a public fast charging station.

At the same time, Opel gives everyone who does not currently want to drive a battery-electric vehicle a choice of alternatives. Although the STLA Medium platform is optimised for electric cars, it can also accommodate other drives. Alternatively, customers can also choose the hybrid with 48-volt technology. It comes with a 1.2 litre turbo petrol engine with 100 kW (136 hp) as well as 21 kW (28 hp) electric motor and electrified six-speed dual clutch transmission (from €36,400). The plug-in hybrid comes with 143 kW (195 hp) system output and 350 Newton meters of torque (€40,150). Regardless of the drivetrain, the Grandland always combines dynamic and comfortable driving pleasure thanks to its chassis which, on the electric and plug-in versions even comes with advanced Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology as standard.

High-Tech All-Wheel Drive with Opel Grandland Hybrid4, Opel Insignia and Opel Insignia GSi

  • Fun and safety in winter: Opel flagships with advanced four-wheel drive systems
  • Extra efficient: Opel Grandland Hybrid4 1 with up to 300 hp system power
  • Optimum AWD: Opel Insignia and Opel Insignia GSi 1 with torque vectoring

New Opel Grandland Hybrid4

Opel has the ideal all-wheel drive cars for this year’s winter sports season: new Opel Grandland Hybrid4 – the top-of-the-range SUV (WLTP fuel consumption1 1.3-1.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 31-29 g/km; weighted, combined) – Opel Insignia (WLTP fuel consumption1 6.7-5.7 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 175-149 g/km; weighted, combined) and the thoroughbred Opel Insignia GSi (WLTP fuel consumption1 8.8-7.9 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 200-179 g/km; weighted, combined) not only make driving on ice and snow great fun; the state-of-the-art all-wheel drive systems of the Opel flagships also offer high safety. Opel customers can choose from an innovative electric AWD SUV or a limousine or Sports Tourer estate with torque vectoring AWD.

New Opel Grandland Hybrid4: Best of both worlds

Opel Grandland Hybrid4: Combines the power of a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors for a system power output of up to 221 kW (300 hp)

New Opel Grandland Hybrid4 combines the power of a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors for a system power output of up to 221 kW (300 hp). Electric unit consists of two electric motors at the front and rear axles. Power of the front electric drive corresponds to 81 kW (110 hp) and that of the rear 83 kW (113 hp). Front electric motor transfers its power to the front wheels via an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission. Second electric motor and the differential are integrated in the rear axle, which turns Opel Grandland Hybrid4 into a permanent all-wheel drive vehicle with optimum traction. Also, the high torque of the electric motors is available right from the first squeeze of the accelerator, delivering optimum traction on slippery surfaces. Maximum speed of the electric plug-in hybrid is 235 km/h.

Four Opel Grandland drive modes: Traction for hills, efficiency for downtown

With the Opel Grandland Hybrid4, drivers can choose between four different driving modes depending on their preferences and requirements:

In “All-Wheel Drive” mode, Opel Grandland Hybrid4 is driven by the front and rear wheels.

  • “Sport” mode combines the power of the combustion engine and the electric motor for an especially dynamic driving style.
  • In “Electric” mode, the Grandland Hybrid4 is driven purely by electricity. In most cases drive is delivered by the rear electric motor, plus the front motor when the driver demands more power by pressing the accelerator. On kick-down, the combustion engine is temporarily additionally engaged for maximum power. Maximum speed when driven purely electrically is 135 km/h.
  • “Hybrid” mode focuses on optimising the vehicle's fuel consumption. Combustion engine and electric motor(s) operate together or alternately, depending on driving conditions and driving style.

Regenerative braking captures kinetic energy during deceleration that would otherwise be dissipated as heat. The customer can choose from two recuperation modes that turn the electric motors into generators, so that electrical energy can be returned to the 13.2 kWh battery and stored.

Opel Insignia GSi: Twinster AWD and FlexRide suspension

Opel Insignia GSi

Opel Insignia with 128 kW (174 hp) turbo-diesel and the ultra-dynamic Opel Insignia GSi with 169 kW (230 hp) direct-injection petrol turbo feature state-of-the-art Twinster all-wheel drive with a rear drive module that uses a twin clutch system without differential. Torque goes to one or both of the rear wheels independently, enabling torque-vectoring capability across the car’s full performance range. When cornering, higher torque goes to the outside rear wheel. Opel Insignia as Grand Sport limousine and Sports Tourer estate therefore turn in with even more precision, reacting even more spontaneously to inputs from the driver.

Opel Insignia GSi: Twinster All-Wheel Drive with a rear drive module that uses a twin clutch system without differential

Opel Insignia with AWD comes as standard with mechatronic FlexRide adaptive suspension, which adapts shock absorbers and steering in fractions of a second. In addition, FlexRide changes the characteristic of the accelerator as well as the shift-points of the eight-speed (Insignia) or nine-speed (GSi) automatic transmission. Driver can choose between the driving modes “Standard”, “Tour”, “Sport” and – exclusively for the GSi – “Competition”. A double-press of the “ESP off” switch enables particularly skilled drivers to explore the outer limits of the Insignia GSi’s driving dynamics, unassisted by ESP. For an even more active driving experience, the nine-speed automatic transmission is operable via paddles on the steering wheel.

With its advanced Twinster all-wheel drive and FlexRide adaptive suspension, Opel Insignia is at home on snow-covered mountain passes as well as on wintry country roads.

[1] Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures mentioned comply with the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). WLTP replaces the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), which was the test procedure used previously.

Propulsion system of the Opel Grandland Hybrid consists of a 133 kW (180hp), 1.6-litre turbocharged, direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine, an 81 kW (110hp) electric motor and a 13.2 kWh lithium-ion battery. Electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission and the vehicle accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds. Driving purely on electricity, the Grandland has a top speed of 135 km/h. Maximum speed is 225 km/h.

New Opel Grandland Hybrid: 1.6 T petrol engine and one electric motor and 13.2 kWh battery

Opel Grandland Hybrid4 combines the power of a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors for a system power output of up to 221 kW (300 hp). WLTP 2 fuel consumption (weighted, combined) is 1.7-1.2 l/100 km with 39-28 g/km CO2 (NEDC1: 1.6-1.5 l/100 km, 37-33 g/km CO2).

New Opel Grandland Hybrid4: 1.6 T petrol engine and two electric motors and 13.2 kWh battery

Maximum speed of the Opel Grandland Hybrid4 is 235 km/h, with sports car-like 0-100 km/h acceleration of 6.1 seconds. Electric unit consists of two electric motors at the front and rear axles. The power of the front electric drive corresponds to 81kW (110hp) and that of the rear 83kW (113hp). The system power output totals 221 kW (300hp). Front electric motor transfers its power to the front wheels via an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission. Second electric motor and the differential are integrated in the rear axle, which turns the Opel Grandland Hybrid4 into a permanent all-wheel drive vehicle with optimum traction. Also, the high torque of the electric motors is available right from the first squeeze of the accelerator, delivering optimum traction on loose surfaces.

With the Grandland Hybrid4, drivers can choose between four different driving modes – “Hybrid”, “Electric”, “All-Wheel Drive” and “Sport” – depending on their preferences and requirements. “Hybrid” mode focuses on optimising the vehicle's fuel consumption, enabling a range of up to 65-55 kilometres in the WLTP2 cycle (69-67 km NEDC 1).

Regenerative braking captures kinetic energy during deceleration that would otherwise be dissipated as heat. The customer can choose from two recuperation modes that turn the electric motors into generators, so that electrical energy can be returned to the 13.2 kWh battery and stored.

Efficient petrol and diesel engines

At the same time, customers are free to choose the type of drive they want, depending on their requirements and individual preferences. Combustion engines that complete the portfolio of the new Opel Grandland are also characterised by high efficiency and low consumption. 1.5 litre turbo diesel with 96 kW/130 hp provides 300 Newton metres of maximum torque from 1,750 rpm and is available with an eight-speed automatic transmission (Fuel consumption; NEDC 1: urban 4.6-4.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.2-3.6 l/100 km, combined 4.4-3.9 l/100 km, 115-103 g/km CO2; WLTP 2: combined 5.9-4.9 l/100 km, 154-128 g/km CO2).

1.2 all-aluminium turbo petrol direct injection engine also develops 96 kW/130 hp and delivers its maximum torque of 230 Newton metres from just 1,750 rpm. The engine is available with a six-speed manual gearbox (Fuel consumption; NEDC1: urban 6.2-5.8 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.9-4.5 l/100 km, combined 5.4-5.0 l/100 km, 124-114 g/km CO2; WLTP 2: combined 7.1-5.9 l/100 km, 161-133 g/km CO2) or eight-speed automatic transmission (Fuel consumption NEDC 1: urban 6.3-5.8 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.0-4.4 l/100 km, combined 5.5-4.9 l/100 km, 126-112 g/km CO2; WLTP 2: combined 7.3-6.1 l/100 km, 166-137 g/km CO2).

Pure Panel, Night Vision, IntelliLux LED Pixel Light

Two widescreens in a single unit form the Opel Pure Panel. This fully digital, driver-oriented cockpit is intuitive to operate and makes a multitude of buttons superfluous. It comprises the latest digital technologies and delivers the most important information. In addition to the up to 12-inch Driver Information Centre, the up to 10-inch central touchscreen also faces the driver, who can therefore concentrate on driving without needing to take his or her eyes off the road.

Also new in combination with automatic transmission is Highway Integration Assist. Using a camera and radar sensors, the system combines various assistants. Adaptive cruise control maintains the distance to the vehicle in front according to the set speed, while active lane positioning keeps the Grandland in the middle of the lane. Thanks to “Stop & Go”, the Grandland automatically resumes driving from a standstill.

Confident appearance and high comfort

Exterior design displays typically clear lines. Opel Vizor stretches across the front, while the Grandland name and the Blitz brand logo stand in the middle of the tailgate. Further accents are set by the bumpers and side panels, now in high-gloss black or body colour depending on the version, as well as the underbody skid-plates in high-gloss black and silver.

New Opel Grandland X Plug-in-Hybrid with Front-Wheel Drive

Next electrified Opel is coming. After the all-electric Opel Corsa-e and the four-wheel drive Opel Grandland X plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the elegant SUV is now on sale as a PHEV with front-wheel drive. Opel Grandland X is therefore the first Opel available in two hybrid versions: as the all-wheel drive Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 (fuel consumption, weighted, combined: 1.4-1.3 l/100km with 32-29 g/km CO2 WLTP1; 1.6-1.5 l/100km, 36-34 g/km CO2 NEDC) and with front-wheel drive. Prices for the FWD model variant start at €43,440 (RRP including VAT in Germany). The net price important for calculating the granting of subsidies is €36,504.

With a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor providing drive to the front wheels, Opel  Grandland X Hybrid produces system power and torque of 165 kW (224 hp) and up to 360 Nm of torque respectively (preliminary fuel consumption, weighted, combined: 1.5-1.4 l/100km, 34-31 g/km CO2 WLTP; 1.7-1.5 l/100km, 37-35 g/km CO2 NEDC). Driven purely by electricity, the hybrid can cover up to 57km in the WLTP cycle (60-65 km NEDC).

High safety comes as standard, thanks to driver assistance systems such as forward collision alert with pedestrian detection and emergency braking, lane keep assist and driver drowsiness detection. With the Navi 5.0 IntelliLink infotainment system and large colour touchscreen, driver and passengers are well connected.

In order to further improve efficiency, Opel Grandland X Hybrid features a sophisticated regenerative braking system to recover the energy produced under braking or deceleration.

Attractive price + increased incentives = hybrid accessibility for less than €40,000

In Germany, the highly equipped Opel Grandland X Hybrid Business Edition is available for €43,440 (RRP including VAT). Opel Grandland X Hybrid is listed as an eligible electric vehicle by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). This would enable buyers to take advantage of the “environmental bonus”. Half of this bonus is granted by the automobile manufacturers and half by a federal subsidy, which is expected to increase from currently €3,000 to €4,500 soon. For the Grandland X Hybrid this would mean that the manufacturer's subsidy of €2,250 is firstly deducted from the net price (€36,504), leaving €34,254. Next, VAT is added, giving a price of €40,762. Following deduction of the €2,250 state subsidy after invoicing, the total “environmental bonus” then reduces the purchase cost of the Grandland X Hybrid Business Edition from €43,440 incl. VAT to an attractive €38,512. The customer saves almost €5,000.

Opel Grandland X Hybrid drivers in Germany can also benefit from company car taxation for electrified vehicles, i.e. the tax on price and usage is half of that on cars with conventional powertrains.

High-tech hybrid: electric motor and direct-injection petrol turbo engine

Propulsion system of the Opel Grandland X Hybrid consists of a 133 kW (180 hp), 1.6-litre turbocharged, direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine, an 81 kW (110 hp) electric motor and a 13.2 kWh lithium-ion battery. Electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission.

Combustion engine will mostly be driven at medium to high vehicle speeds, while the lower to medium speeds of transient driving are covered by the electric part of the powertrain. Studies have shown that in Germany, most daily journeys cover a distance of under 50 km, so for these customers, the Grandland X Hybrid could potentially drive with zero emissions all of the time.

Opel Grandland X Hybrid offers three drive modes – “Electric”, “Hybrid” and “Sport” – allowing drivers to tailor the car’s characteristics to their wishes or to specific driving conditions. For example, choosing “Hybrid” allows the car to automatically select its most efficient method of propulsion, with the possibility of switching to “Electric” for zero-emission driving when reaching a city centre. “Sport” combines the power of both combustion engine and electric motor for especially dynamic driving performance. Opel Grandland X Hybrid can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 225 km/h.

The plug socket for charging the battery via the 3.7 kW on-board charger (a 7.4 kW version is optional) is conveniently positioned on the opposite side of the vehicle to the fuel filler, while the battery is installed under the rear seats in order to optimise space in the interior and the boot.

As electricity is cheaper than petrol, drivers can save money when they regularly recharge the battery instead of putting fuel in the tank. Depending on local prices and distances covered, this can significantly lower energy bills. Charging time depends on the type of charger – using the mode 3 cable with the 7.4kW on-board charger, the battery of the Opel Grandland X Hybrid can potentially be fully charged in less than two hours.

To make charging even more convenient, Opel Grandland X Hybrid benefits from the dedicated solutions for electrified vehicles supplied by Free2Move Services, the Groupe PSA mobility brand. Offer includes a charging pass and a trip planner that shows the location of charging stations along the route. “myOpel” app also allows programming of charging times or adjustment of climate control via “remote control”. “OpelConnect” service offers functions such as Live Navigation with real-time traffic information, app-based checking of vehicle data, direct connection with roadside assistance and e-Call. Help can be reached within seconds via the red button. If the seatbelt tensioners or the airbags are deployed, e-Call is activated automatically.

With the new Grandland X Hybrid, Opel’s electrification offensive gains further momentum. Brand’s first electric light commercial vehicle, Opel Vivaro-e, will arrive in the course of next year. All-electric versions of the Combo Life, Combo Cargo and Zafira Life will follow in 2021. By 2024, all Opel models will be electrified.
