Opel Crossland X - Leather trim in combination with ergonomic AGR front seats

The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel produces 88 kW/120 hp and maximum torque of 300 Nm at 1750 rpm (fuel consumption[1] [2]: urban 4.4-4.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.8-3.7 l/100 km, combined 4.0 l/100 km, 105-104 g/km CO2). The engine meets the strict Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard thanks to an innovative oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber coupled with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Opel is bringing the new Crossland X 1.5 Turbo Diesel to the market with a six-speed automatic transmission and fuel-saving start/stop as standard.

The cylinder head with integrated air intake manifold and the crankcase of the new 1.5-litre diesel are made of lightweight aluminium, while the four valves per cylinder are activated by dual overhead camshafts. The common rail direct injection system operates at up to 2,000 bar, with fuel entering the combustion chambers through eight-hole injector nozzles.

For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the emissions reduction system – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. The NOx adsorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off. With this innovative technology the new 1.5-litre diesel meets the strict Euro 6d-TEMP standard for NOx.

Prices for the Opel Crossland X Edition with 88 kW/120 hp 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine begin at €24,120 (RRP including VAT in Germany).

!NEW! Opel Announces Details on Offensive with Fuel Consumption and Emissions

  • Opel to publish WLTP test cycle based fuel consumption numbers, reflecting more everyday driving conditions as of June
  • From August onwards, Opel will implement improved SCR diesel applications in new vehicles – improvement towards RDE NOx specifications
  • Voluntary customer satisfaction field action for existing diesel cars with SCR technology from June onwards
  • Opel will implement SCR technology to entire Diesel Fleet Starting as of 2018

Opel has outlined details of its engineering initiative for more transparency, credibility and efficiency as announced last December. As of this summer, the company will take the voluntarily next step to improve transparency and meet future emission protocols. Starting with the new Opel Astra from June 2016 onwards, and in addition to the official fuel consumption and CO2 information, Opel will publish fuel consumption numbers, reflecting different driving behavior recorded under the WLTP test cycle. In addition, Opel will implement an initiative to improve NOx emissions on SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) diesel applications in new vehicles from August onwards. This is a voluntary and early intermediate step towards the so-called RDE (Real Driving Emissions) legislation that goes into effect in September 2017. Opel is offering to provide the regulatory authorities with the engine calibration strategies, which should serve as the basis for a proactive dialogue.

“We at Opel strongly believe that the industry has to regain trust by increasing the transparency with customers and authorities. Opel takes this step towards RDE to show it can be done”, said Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “We announced in December in which direction we are going; now we are delivering the details. I ask the European Union as well as the EU member states and other European countries to accelerate alignment on test set-ups and test interpretations on real-driving-measurements to stop the existing uncertainty caused by test results that are hardly comparable.”

Increase of Transparency on Consumption: Opel steps towards WLTP Test Cycle

From the end of June 2016, and in addition to the official fuel consumption and CO2 information of Opel models, fuel consumption numbers recorded under the WLTP test cycle will be published, starting with the new Opel Astra K.

These figures, which will show a fuel consumption range with a low and a high number, will first be offered for the model year 2016 Astra and published on a dedicated Opel micro-website, creating more transparency. Figures determined under the WLTP test cycle will be published for further models later this year.

According to EU plans, the “New European Driving Cycle” (NEDC) will be replaced starting in 2017 with the more modern standard “Worldwide Harmonized Light Duty Vehicles Test Procedure” (WLTP). The WLTP is important to maintain standardized, reproducible and comparable results.

Less emissions for Euro 6 diesel engines: Opel moves towards RDE

As indicated in December, Opel is also taking action related to NOx emissions to improve Euro 6 diesel SCR engines in the direction of future RDE. RDE is the real driving emissions standard which supplements current test methods and measures a car’s emissions directly on the road.

Dr. Neumann emphasized: "I strongly believe that diesel technology will only continue to play a major role in Europe if the industry sticks to the path of continuous improvement. That is one of the reasons why we decided to implement SCR-Technology to the entire diesel fleet starting as of 2018. With this we do not only talk about a strategy of regaining trust, we also talk about a strategy to preserve the advantage of Europe’s automotive industry in diesel technology.”

The start of the implementation for this Euro 6 SCR improvement in new vehicles is currently scheduled for August 2016. In addition, this activity also includes a voluntary customer satisfaction field action that will involve 57,000 Euro 6 SCR vehicles that are already on the road in Europe (Zafira Tourer, Insignia and Cascada). This activity will start in June 2016 already.

With the large convertible, Opel offers a spacious four-seater with a high-quality soft-top otherwise only seen in selected premium brand vehicles. It features superior acoustic and thermal insulation for first-class, all-season driving comfort. The Opel Cascada is a seductive whirlwind with its top down and a quiet Gran Turismo when the top is up. It is a year-round cabriolet thanks to its sophisticated soft-top that opens in just 17 seconds while driving at speeds of up to 50 km/h. And now Opel gives the Cascada the brand-new two-liter turbo diesel engine recently introduced in the Insignia and Zafira Tourer, as well as the three new colors True Blue, Rocky Coast and Coconut. The new 125 kW/170 hp four-cylinder unit with 400 Nm torque meets all the important demands on modern diesel engines and replaces the 121 kW/165 hp engine.

Purrs: Whisper diesel 2.0 CDTI perfect for open-air driving.
Compared to its predecessor, the new powerhouse boasts three percent more power and 14 percent more torque, yet has even more economical consumption. With the new two-liter turbo diesel under the hood and six-speed manual transmission, the open-air cruiser consumes just 4.9 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle and emits 129 g/km CO2. Thus, the Euro 6 - 2.0 CDTI boasts improvements of six percent. The powerful engine is a perfect fit to the comfortable and lively Cascada: the Opel convertible accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 218 km/h. It makes the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 9.3 seconds – seven-tenths faster than with the predecessor engine. The elegant convertible with the new 2.0 CDTI engine is available from 30,500 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

Stylish Opel Cascada: Attractive convertible with premium roof and room for four adults.
“The Opel Cascada is a mid-size cabriolet with premium features and quality for an extremely attractive price. With the new engine that is part of our extensive powertrain offensive, cabriolet fans now get an engine that sets standards in this class in terms of refinement, power development and consumption,” says Peter Christian Küspert, Vice President Sales and Aftersales at Opel Group.

Highest efficiency for low consumption

Clean: New 2.0 CDTI Turbo diesel with 125 kW/170 hp and just 4.9 liters consumption.
The engineers managed to achieve the efficiency improvements by redesigning the combustion chamber, optimizing the re-profiled intake ports and looking to a new fuel injection system with 2,000 bar and up to 10 injections per cylinder cycle. These measures not only improve the efficiency of the engine, the improved fuel atomization also benefits refinement. Impressive maximum torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. For the first time the VGT (variable geometry turbine) turbocharger features an electrical actuator instead of a vacuum actuator resulting in 20 percent faster boost response and even more driving fun. The exceptionally compact packaging of the turbocharger and the intercooler also minimizes the air volume between the turbocharger and the engine, further contributing to an especially fast boost pressure build up. For durability, the turbocharger is water-cooled and has an oil filter fitted at the oil inlet point to help further reduce wear in the bearing system.

Impressive: Maximum torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm.

Smooth running for pure cabriolet feeling

A consistent improvement in NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics under all operating conditions was a key requirement for the new engine right from the outset of its design. Architectural improvements focused on two high noise emitting areas: the top and bottom of the engine. A new aluminum cylinder head design, including the addition of a decoupled, plastic cam cover with isolated fixings and a sealing gasket, improves noise attenuation. At the bottom of the engine, a new balancer shaft module is fitted, made of high pressure die-cast aluminum. It houses two counter-rotating shafts which offset up to 83 percent of secondary order engine vibrations. As a result of all these and numerous other design features, the new 2.0 CDTI unit emits less noise than its predecessor throughout its operating range, and with 74 decibels at idle it is even three decibels quieter than before. This takes the open-air driving fun in the Opel Cascada to new heights.

Clean running with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

The new 2.0 CDTI runs almost as clean as a gasoline engine with Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. BlueInjection is an after-treatment which removes nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the engine’s exhaust gases. Tiny quantities of AdBlue®, a harmless fluid consisting of urea and water, are injected into the exhaust gas flow ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH3), which is absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the passing exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to harmless nitrogen and water vapor in a chemical reaction with the ammonia. The AdBlue solution, available at filling stations and Opel dealerships, is stored in a tank, which can be topped up as required via a nozzle adjacent to the vehicle’s fuel filler cap.

OnStar: The all-round carefree package for the Opel Cascada

Ultra-modern technology is not only under the Opel Cascada’s hood: from late summer, the mid-size convertible will also be available with the personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar. The built-in 4G LTE connection enables mobile data speeds up to 10 times faster than with 3G technologies. The system offers increased responsiveness and can support simultaneous voice and data connections. Opel OnStar raises in-vehicle communications and on-board entertainment capabilities to a new level. Thanks to the powerful Wi-Fi hotspot, up to seven mobile devices can be connected to the system simultaneously.

!NEW! Opel Mokka: All-New 1.6 CDTI Turbo Diesel for SUV Bestseller

  • World premiere: Opel Mokka with new generation all-aluminum diesel debuts in Paris
  • Frugal: Compact SUV sips just 4.1 l/100 km with 109 g/km CO2
  • Exemplary: Class-leading running refinement, lightweight design

Opel Mokka with 1.6 CDTI turbo diesel: The sporty-chic Opel bestseller with the new all-aluminum diesel engine will celebrate its premiere at the „Mondial de l’Automobile 2014“ in Paris.

Ever since Opel introduced the Mokka almost two years ago, the trendy sub-compact SUV has gone from one success to the next. With sales exceeding 275,000, this two-time All-wheel Drive Car of the Year winner is a bestseller – in its segment and for the Opel brand. Now the Mokka is about to deliver even more driving fun: from early 2015, it will be available with Opel’s all-new 100 kW/136 hp 1.6 CDTI turbo diesel. The Mokka premieres with this new generation engine at the “Mondial de l’Automobile 2014” in Paris from October 4 - 19.

Already dubbed the ‘whisper diesel’, the extremely compact four-cylinder unit will replace the current 1.7 liter diesel in the Mokka line-up. It gives more power and torque – up six hp and 20 Nm, respectively – from a smaller displacement, as well as significantly lower fuel consumption. The introduction of this high-tech engine will enhance the Mokka’s powertrain portfolio made up of gasoline, diesel and LPG engines.

Improved running smoothness, more power, better fuel efficiency: With the new 100 kW/136 hp turbo diesel, the Opel Mokka boasts a fuel consumption of only 4.1 liters per 100 kilometers over the combined cycle

The lively 1.6 CDTI is part of a new family of Opel all-aluminum diesel engines. The 100 kW/136 hp version reaches 85 hp per liter – unrivalled in its displacement class – and delivers plentiful torque of 320 Nm. Acceleration and elasticity figures promise lots of driving fun: Opel Mokka 1.6 CDTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, and makes the transition from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 9.9 seconds. Maximum speed is 191 km/h. The whisper diesel is also extremely economical and kinder to the environment: with Opel’s precise six-speed manual transmission and standard Start/Stop system, the 1.6 CDTI Mokka consumes just 4.1 l/100 km over the combined cycle while emitting only 109 g/km CO2. This is almost 0.5 l/100 km less fuel and 11 g/km less CO2 than the predecessor 1.7 liter version. This new diesel engine complies with the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard, making it as clean as a comparable gasoline unit.

New benchmark in running refinement

Engineers have improved noise generation, vibration and running refinement, the result of a clear focus on quietness and smoothness that characterized the engine’s entire concept, design and development process. State-of-the-art CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) simulations and scores of optimization loops were used to assess the noise characteristics of each component and sub-system even before the first prototype engine was built.

In addition to numerous measures to improve running refinement, engineers also focused on saving weight, using aluminum instead of cast iron for the engine block – a ‘first’ for diesel engine production at Opel. The crankshaft bedplate and cylinder head are also in aluminum, giving a total weight saving of more than 20 kilograms.

State-of-the-art components for high performance with low environmental impact

Other contributors to its strong and clean performance are the VTG turbocharger (variable turbine geometry) and high-pressure, common-rail fuel injection system. Injectors capable of supplying fuel at 2,000 bar and of up to 10 injection pulses per cylinder cycle ensure high power, improved fuel atomization and efficient mixing with the air intake charge. To comply with the Euro 6 emissions standard in the Mokka, the 1.6 CDTI requires a Lean NOx Trap (LNT), an exhaust after-treatment system upstream of the diesel particulate filter that captures and reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gases.

The all-new 1.6 CDTI in the Opel Mokka is fitted as standard with Start/Stop and a low-friction, six-speed manual gearbox, which ensures silky smooth and more precise gear shifting. Numerous changes to internal components and shifting mechanisms, as well as the transmission’s integration in the vehicle, give a noticeable improvement in driving comfort. The combination of the new turbo diesel and manual transmission is offered for both front and all-wheel drive, while a six-speed automatic is also available with front-wheel drive. Orders for the Opel Mokka with the new generation engine will be taken from the end of this year, and it will be in dealerships in early 2015.

!NEW! Ultra-economical: Opel Zafira Tourer MPV now with new 120 hp Whisper Diesel

  • Great value: Opel Zafira Tourer with new 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX on sale from 26,850 euros
  • Frugal: Compact MPV consumes just 4.5 l/100 km and emits only 119 g/km CO2
  • Complete: 88 kW/120 hp version expands Zafira Tourer diesel portfolio
Opel Zafira Tourer MPV with new 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX
Another economical choice for the Zafira Tourer: the versatile Opel seven-seater is now available in a second 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX version with a power output of 88 kW/120 hp. This joins the 100 kW/136 hp turbo diesel which made its debut in the compact van last year. Both are members of Opel’s new diesel generation and distinguished by exceptionally economical fuel consumption with first-class running smoothness as well as minimal noise generation, which has prompted the motoring press to hail Opel’s 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX engine as the “whisper diesel”. It is part of Opel’s large model and engine offensive, which will see 27 new models and 17 new engines introduced between 2014 and 2018. The new base version of the Zafira Tourer diesel is now on sale for a very attractive 26,850 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

A clear focus on minimizing engine noise, vibration and harshness characterized the engine’s entire concept, design and development process. This resulted in a very quiet and silky smooth engine operation. Advanced CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) simulation tools and several optimization loops were used to assess the noise character of each component and sub-system before the first prototype engine was even built. The success of this work is proven by the engine’s best-in-class performance for low noise and vibration.

Opel ECOTEC 1.6 CDTI : Opel’s new diesel generation is distinguished by exceptionally economical fuel consumption with first-class running smoothness as well as minimal noise generation.
The new engine generation is also first class in other areas: it has been further optimized in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Zafira Tourer with the 88 kW/120 hp 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX comes with Start/Stop fitted as standard, and is also available with a low-friction six-speed manual transmission and a braking energy recuperation system. To ensure optimum electrical energy management, this system recovers a part of the kinetic energy via the generator in engine overrun mode, converting this to electrical energy and feeding it into the battery. This happens automatically whenever the driver takes his/her foot off the accelerator pedal or presses the brake pedal. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the generator output is greatly reduced and electrical components are powered in a fuel-saving manner by the buffered electrical energy. This means the engine is not required to drive the generator when accelerating, which helps reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This cyclical process would overload a conventional battery when repeated over time, so a high-performance, Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery is fitted in the Zafira Tourer. It provides maximum reliability in the electrical system and ensures the engine will always start without delay at any time. The AGM battery’s glass mat fleece absorbs electrolyte liquid, giving a high density which reduces internal resistance, improves cold-start characteristics and increases the battery’s service life.

Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX: Compact MPV consumes just 4.5 l/100 km and emits only 119 g/km CO2
Thanks to these ultra-modern technologies, the new Zafira Tourer whisper diesel is not only extremely quiet and comfortable to drive. It also offers significantly reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, consuming just 4.5 l/100 km in the combined cycle with emissions of only 119 g/km CO2. This frugality has earned the seven-seat Zafira Tourer an ‘A’ energy efficiency label in Germany.

Opel’s new diesel generation: Powerful, economical, environmentally-friendly

Both output versions (120 and 136 hp) of the Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI comply with future Euro 6 emission standards. Engineers have achieved this by incorporating Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which makes these diesels as clean as a gasoline engine in terms of emissions. In this environmentally-friendly, exhaust after-treatment process, a harmless fluid called AdBlue®, consisting of urea and water, is injected into the exhaust gas. The solution decomposes into ammonia, which is stored in a catalyst substrate. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) entering the catalyst in the exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to nitrogen and water. In this way, nitrogen oxides can be reduced by 60 to 80 percent.

The 1.6 CDTI engine’s cylinder block, crankshaft bedplate and cylinder head are all made from aluminum, saving more than 20 kilograms in weight. Fuel injector nozzle pressures of 2,000 bar, a 25 percent increase over previous engine generations, enable up to 10 injection pulses per cylinder cycle. This ensures high power, improved fuel atomization and efficient mixing with the air intake charge.

The two new generation ultra-efficient whisper-quiet 1.6 CDTI engines now complete a wide portfolio of diesel units for the Zafira Tourer. The spectrum of choice includes Opel’s familiar 2.0-liter diesel, with 81 kW/110 hp, 96 kW/130 hp or 121 kW/165 hp, as well as the top-of-the-range version which delivers143 kW/195 hp and 400 Nm maximum torque. The gasoline portfolio comprises an 85 kW/115 hp 1.8-liter engine and variants of a 1.4-liter Turbo with 88 kW/120 hp or 103 kW/140 hp, as well as a 125 kW/170 hp version of the 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo. The most powerful gasoline engine in the Zafira Tourer range is the 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo with 147 kW/200 hp – both versions of the direct-injection gasoline turbo unit are part of Opel’s all-new engine generation.

Customers who seek even more economical and environmentally-friendly driving can choose a 103 kW/140 hp, 1.4 LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) ecoFLEX model or the 1.6 CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) ecoFLEX variant with 110 kW/150 hp.

Opel Astra 1.6 CDTI - five door hatchback
After debuting in the Opel Zafira Tourer, the all-new whisper diesel now also ensures powerful and clean drive in the heart of the Opel model portfolio. The 1.6 CDTI with 100 kW/136 hp and 320 Nm maximum torque is now also available in the high-volume Astra hatchback, Astra notchback and Astra Sports Tourer models. It boasts superb performance and minimum noise generation while consuming just 3.9 liters diesel per 100 km in the NEDC test procedure (New European Driving Cycle). The 81 kW/110 hp version of the whisper turbo diesel debuting at the Geneva Motor Show from March 6 – 16 is even cleaner and more economical. In the NEDC this engine needs just 3.7 liters diesel for 100 km and with CO2 emissions of 97 g/km, undercutting the 100 gram mark.

Opel Astra 1.6 CDTI - four door notchback
“Our high-volume Astra and the new whisper diesel 1.6 CDTI are a perfect match. They are the ideal coupling for everyone who wants to combine high performance with top refinement and high fuel efficiency,” says Michael Ableson, Vice President GME Engineering. “The new 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo gasoline and 1.6 CDTI engines comprise the core of our engine offensive. They prove that Opel cars not only impress with design, but also offer top quality with ultra-modern technologies for an all-round, first-class driving experience.”

Smooth whisper diesel: All-new 1.6 CDTI with 3.9 l/100 km and 320 Nm
Named the most reliable German compact car by the trade magazine auto motor und sport (Issue 12/2013), the Opel Astra now offers state-of-the-art on-board infotainment with the IntelliLink system. Its ultra-modern engine technology is just as advanced. The highlight in the diesel offer for the Astra hatchback, notchback and Sports Tourer is the completely new 1.6 CDTI with 100 kW/136 hp that is now available. The various performance levels of the newest generation all-aluminum turbo unit will successively replace the engines with 1.7-liter displacement, ushering in a new era in Opel’s diesel portfolio.

Opel ECOTEC 1.6 CDTI Euro 6 engine: 100 kW/136 hp and 320 Nm max. torque
Opel’s extremely efficient whisper diesel is the first unit in the Astra portfolio to already comply with the future Euro 6 emissions standard, making it the cleanest diesel Opel has ever built. The engine is best-in-class in noise and vibration generation thanks to its optimized component design, an especially efficient combustion process with multiple injection and additional acoustic measures. The result is totally convincing. Opel’s new 1.6 CDTI is the quietest diesel in its class, earning the name whisper diesel. Further contributors to its strong and clean performance are the high-pressure common rail system and lean NOx trap exhaust after-treatment (LNT). Together with the VTG turbocharger (Variable Turbine Geometry) that enables powerful response, they are the engine’s core technical elements.

The engine boasts powerful 320 Nm maximum torque – seven percent more than the 130 hp 1.7-liter predecessor. At the same time, fuel efficiency is improved and CO2 emissions are reduced. This output variant makes do with an exemplary 3.9 liters diesel per 100 km in the NEDC test procedure and emits just 104 g/km CO2 – up to eight percent less than the 1.7-liter engine. So it’s no surprise that in Germany, the Astra 1.6 CDTI has earned the best A+ energy efficiency label. This comes with top performance and superb low-speed torque: the turbo unit accelerates the Astra from zero to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds (notchback: 10.1 seconds); from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear it needs just 9.2 seconds (notchback: 9.1 seconds, Sports Tourer: 9.9 seconds). Top speed is 200 km/h and the notchback even reaches 205 km/h.

The 100 kW/136 hp Astra hatchback 1.6 CDTI with Start/Stop and six-speed manual transmission is available from 22,200 euros, the notchback from 22,700 euros and prices for the Sports Tourer counterpart start at 23,300 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

Only 97 g/km CO2: Premiere for Opel Astra 1.6 CDTI with 81 kW/110 hp in Geneva
With the new 1.6 CDTI, the Astra hatchback, notchback and Sports Tourer all tighten their fuel-saving belts. In Geneva the 81 kW/110 hp version of the newest generation turbo diesel makes its first appearance. Also featuring exemplary low-end torque, the engine has 300 Nm maximum torque (seven percent more than the 1.7 liter predecessor with the same hp), achieving fuel consumption in the NEDC combined cycle to 3.7 liters diesel per 100 km – and CO2 emissions to below 100 grams: the compact class bestseller emits just 97 g/km.

New version of Opel ECOTEC 1.6 CDTI Euro 6 engine: 81 kW/110 hp and 300 Nm max. torque

With all these advantages, the 110 hp version of the ultra-modern whisper diesel that will soon be available is everything but a listless economy engine. Environmental friendliness, running refinement and low noise generation come with ample power development. With the new generation turbo diesel, the Astra hatchback, notchback and Sports Tourer accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 12.0 seconds, and top speed is 186 km/h.

Perfect fit: Improved six-speed manual gearbox increases comfort and efficiency

The new 1.6 CDTI engine in the Astra comes coupled with the further developed, improved six-speed manual transmission. This guarantees highest shifting comfort, as Opel invested over 50 million euros to optimize the five and six-speed gearboxes. A host of enhancements to the transmission components and shifting mechanisms, as well as to integration in the vehicle, led to noticeable improvements in comfort. Shifting requires minimal effort with the low-friction gearboxes, so that in the Astra 1.6 CDTI it is faster, more precise and above all silky smooth.

“It is fantastic to see this growth,” said James Taylor, Vauxhall’s Fleet Sales Director.

“We took some very bold decisions when launching this car and how we’ve approached tackling the challenges of reducing whole life costs, SMR costs and National Insurance Contributions, plus minimising the benefit-in-kind taxation for company car drivers.

“It wasn’t easy to do, but it was the right strategy and I’m encouraged by the sales results we’ve achieved and the very positive feedback from our customers and the new business we have brought in.

!NEW! 24-Hour Record Drive: Opel Astra is Fastest Series Diesel in the World

  • Two Astras attempt to clinch a total of 18 new records on high speed route
  • Driver teams with international journalists in record run at Millbrook
  • World record attempt for a series passenger car with two liter diesel engine
  • All results subject to confirmation from motorsport governing body the FIA

  • Fabulous 201 km/h average speed for Opel/Vauxhall Astra along Millbrook’s steeply banked curves

24 hours at full throttle on the Millbrook Proving Ground’s High Speed Bowl with its spectacular, steeply banked curves. Twelve pilots take it in turns to alternate driving of two series model Astra 2.0 CDTIs. A 4800 km journey with just 22 minutes downtime for both cars in 24 hours. All this produced a stunning average speed of 201 km/h, in the attempt to achieve the world record for diesel passenger cars in the FIA’s 1600-2000cc forced-induction diesel production car class.

Red thunderbolt: Astra 2.0 CDTI on Millbrook Proving Ground's High Speed Bowl
In total, Opel’s and its sister brand Vauxhall’s test team attempted twelve world records and six British National Speed Endurance Records. The 24-hour sprint included the obligatory fitting of roll cages, Corbeau race seats and Luke harnesses, then the sealing and locking in a secure compound under supervision of the sports authorities right up until the attempt. Opel/Vauxhall is still awaiting FIA confirmation that its attempts have been successful.

Teamwork: Pitstop crew gathers around the Opel racer - time for a short refueling stop
The two Astra CDTIs started out on the High Speed Bowl in Millbrook near Milton Keynes on October 5, 2013 at 16.00. Nine journalists shared the cars with three Opel/Vauxhall specialists. Volker Strycek, former DTM race driver and Director Opel Performance Cars & Motorsport acted as team captain. The previous touring car expert and race director was happy at the end of the 24-hour-marathon about the 18 new records attempted: “The two Astras were absolutely convincing at full throttle. The combination of performance and efficiency made the 24 hour benchmark possible. Furthermore, the cars didn’t need a single drop of oil”.

Weighing of Astra: Technical approval procedure underway ahead of the start of the race
Michelin was tire partner, providing Pilot Super Sports tires from the Astra’s original fittings – the same set that an Opel customer receives with a new Astra. Rig tests were carried out as well as 500 miles of testing at Millbrook during the summer in order to test their durability. Volker Strycek remarked: “We did a tire change once on each car just to be absolutely on the safe side: the stress on the suspension and tires can be intense, due to the forces exerted by the track’s banking.”

Records make you happy: A smiling team captain Volker Strycek meets his pit crew at the end of the race
Volker Strycek not only brought his motorsport expertise to the project, but he also took a four-strong pit crew to England, that serviced the Astras as if at a 24-hour run in Le Mans or at the Nürburgring. The crew undertook quick and efficient re-fuelling and driver changes throughout the day and night and it was thanks to them that the very short downtime of 22 minutes was possible.

Which is fastest?! The two winning Astras make it over the finishing line

“This is real testament to the durability, safety and performance of the Astra in extreme conditions that a normal motorist would never experience,” said Duncan Aldred, Acting Vice President Sales and Aftersales Opel/Vauxhall and Chairman & Managing Director of Vauxhall. ‘Sometimes too much focus is put on the final one per cent of a car’s handling, or its 0-60mph time, but for most buyers exceptional reliability and secure, safe handling are paramount. Above all, this test sets out to prove these virtues.’
