Zaragoza produces its 11 millionth Opel Corsa since 1982

  • Opel Corsa reaches a new milestone in its long relationship with the Zaragoza Plant: 11 millionth unit of this model has just rolled off the assembly line of this production center
  • Since 1982, Zaragoza and Opel Corsa are practically synonymous words. Since its inauguration to the present day, the Aragonese factory has manufactured the six generations of this model
  • Produced in Aragon exclusively worldwide, Opel Corsa F is the model of the brand best-selling in the world. It stands out both for its attractive and elegant design, as well as for its high level of safety, performance and comfort. These qualities, together with the possibility of opting for a 100% electric version, the Opel Corsa-e, have been key to its commercial success

For almost four decades, Opel Corsa rhymes with Zaragoza. Aragonese plant opened its doors in 1982 to produce this model, with which it has maintained a more than lasting relationship: it has manufactured its six generations and is currently in charge of assembling the Opel Corsa as a world exclusive, including its 100% version. electric, new Opel Corsa-e.

Today, the Zaragoza Plant dresses up to experience a new milestone in its long idyll with the compact Opel urbanite: the 11 millionth unit of the Opel Corsa has left its facilities. A magic number for both the factory and its workers who, in the last 39 years, have seen all these cars pass through the hands and care of generations of operators and engineers.

If all the Opel Corsa produced in Zaragoza since 1982 were lined up, they would go around the world and there would still be enough vehicles to cover the distance between the Aragonese capital and Beirut. A comparison that gives an idea of the importance of this car for the brand of lightning. Since its launch it has been a strategic model in its range. It is the best-selling Opel vehicle, as well as being one of the great pillars of the German firm's electrification process. Currently, it represents more than a third of the brand's registrations on the five continents.

Thanks to this commercial success, Stellantis Plant in Zaragoza has established itself as a key production center for Opel, since the brand's sales leader, New Corsa, and the Opel Crossland, the SUV that follows in the sales ranking.

Launched at the end of 2019, the sixth generation of the Opel Corsa has become a benchmark in the B segment due to its attractive design, its features, its technological equipment and its interior space. Its electric version, the Opel Corsa-e, marks the difference between the zero-emission models in its category thanks to its 359 km of autonomy, its power of 136 HP (100 kW) and its maximum instantaneous torque of 260 Nm, which provides capacity response, agility and dynamic behavior.

It incorporates technologies normally reserved for higher segments, such as the adaptive matrix lighting system IntelliLux LED or advanced driving assistance functions among which the high-tech front camera, traffic sign reader, radar based Adaptive Cruise Control with stop and go functionality, sensor based lateral assist or active lane assist.

“Opel Corsa is an iconic model of our brand that is manufactured, exclusively worldwide, in Zaragoza, a city where its production began in 1982. For 40 years, it represents the brand's offer in a key category, segment B, where its six generations have been a benchmark for its modern and dynamic design, for incorporating the most advanced technology of each era, as well as for its comfort and interior space. Reaching 11 million units produced gives us an idea of both the good work of the Zaragoza Plant and the solidity of the Corsa concept, which have succeeded in very diverse times, conditions and markets ”, said Pedro Lazarino , Director of Opel for Spain and Portugal.

“ Present since the inauguration of the factory in 1982, the Opel Corsa is a key model in the history of the Zaragoza Plant, as evidenced by the 11 million units produced at our facilities to date. A figure that says a lot about the maximum level of demand and quality of the factory and the adaptability and commitment of its workers over the years. These qualities have made it possible to produce its sixth generation, built on an innovative multi-energy platform, exclusively worldwide. Quite a challenge that has required a deep modernization of the facilities and manufacturing methods ”, says Manuel Munárriz, Director of the Zaragoza Plant.

Opel Award Winners 2021: Vehicles, People and the Brand

  • Fully charged for success: Opel Mokka-e wins “Golden Steering Wheel 2021”
  • Electrifying transporter: Opel Vivaro-e is “International Van of the Year 2021”
  • Clear concept: Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD “Best Concept Car of the Year”
  • Award for design chief: Mark Adams named “Eurostar 2021”

Expert juries and the general public are equally impressed by Opel’s models – the numerous awards this year once again provide the proof. The “International Van of the Year 2021” for the Opel Vivaro-e and the “Golden Steering Wheel 2021” for the Opel Mokka-e are just a couple of examples.

New Opel Vivaro-e: Andreas Marx, head of Opel in Germany, accepted the award

“We are very proud of these awards, they are a sign of the commitment and passion with which Opel goes to work”, said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz. “Regardless of what job they do – in design, in engineering or in the office – all our employees have put fantastic cars on the road. I owe them all a big thank you.”

Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz with Golden Steering Wheel Award for Opel Mokka-e

Opel Vivaro-e had already been voted “International Van of The Year 2021” at the end of last year. The prized trophy then made its way to Opel’s HQ in Rüsselsheim in the spring. This was the beginning of a series of awards for the best-selling battery-electric light commercial vehicle. In the United Kingdom alone, the Vivaro-e gathered numerous awards such as “Electric Van of The Year”. Similarly, the Combo (with combustion engine or as the all-electric Opel Combo-e) picked up loads of prizes across Europe in the course of the year.

All-new Opel Mokka arrived in the spring – bold, pure and everything but ordinary. Opel Mokka has been wowing the press and public ever since, most recently as the all-electric Opel Mokka-e winning the “Golden Steering Wheel 2021”, one of the most renowned awards in the whole automotive industry. Unconventional SUV’s top technologies are as decisive as the reduced-to-the-essentials styling, which according to Top Gear magazine, makes the Mokka the “Design of the Year”. The man responsible for the sensational looks is Opel Vice President Design, Mark Adams; reason enough for Automotive News Europe to name him a “Eurostar 2021”.

With the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD, a group of Opel employees this year revived a true automobile legend, and made it fit for the future. Battery-electric Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD rouses the emotions wherever it goes. Unique one-off is a real eye-catcher – in France and Spain it was recently elected “Concept Car of the Year”.

Opel Increases Europe Wide Sales of Light Commercial Vehicles

  • Strong growth in European core markets
  • Opel Vivaro-e is European leader in its segment
  • Opel Combo and Vivaro-e named Van of the Year
  • Complete van portfolio on the road with zero emissions

Opel e-LCV rangeOpel Combo-e, Vivaro-e and Movano-e

Opel has significantly increased sales of its light commercial vehicles across Europe in the first 11 months of 2021. Compared to the same period last year, sales grew by 12.1 per cent to around 100,000 units1. Results in important markets such as Germany (+9.0 per cent), United Kingdom (+8.1 per cent), France (+25.2 per cent) and Spain (+6.0 per cent) contributed significantly to this development.

Growth of the battery-electric Vivaro-e from Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall between January and October is particularly pleasing. In Europe, the Vivaro-e leads the D segment with a share of 21 per cent. In the overall ranking of all electrified commercial vehicles, the midsize van is in a convincing third place – also thanks to the high sales figures in the UK. There, the Vivaro-e holds a market share of almost 50 per cent in the segment. In Germany, the Opel Vivaro-e has reached third place in the top list. Demand for the only recently introduced Combo-e is already equally good.

“Our light commercial vehicles are holding their own very successfully in the market and have by no means exhausted their full potential,” said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz. “Now that all our LCVs – the Opel Combo-e, Vivaro-e and Movano-e – are available for battery-electric, zero-emissions transportation, we will generate further impetus.”

Opel's light commercial vehicles are highly regarded by customers and the media. For example, the Opel Combo (2019) and the Opel Vivaro-e (2021) were named Van of the Year by an international jury of experts. Another big fan of the electric vans from Rüsselsheim is mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner, who uses the Opel Zafira-e Life and Opel Vivaro-e for emissions-free shuttle operations and deliveries to his mountain museums.

Fleet customers are currently particularly interested in the zero emissions Vivaro-e. Opel's sister brand Vauxhall has already signed contracts for 3,000 battery-electric Vivaro-e vehicles with British Gas and for a further 655 vehicles for the service company Mitie. In Germany, registrations of the Combo increased by 27 per cent compared with the same period last year, the highest growth within the Opel LCV fleet.

In addition to the Opel Combo compact van and the Vivaro midsize van, Opel also offers the Movano large van as the battery-electric Movano-e – as with all Opel's electrified commercial vehicles, with full functionality and unrestricted load volume compared to the conventional variants. This makes the brand with the Blitz currently the only one to offer its entire LCV portfolio battery-electric, emission-free and immediately orderable.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN

First hydrogen transporter from a vehicle manufacturer is ready to go. First Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN off the production line will begin its emissions-free work in the fleet of the German manufacturer of premium domestic appliances, Miele. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle from the brand with the Blitz will perform daily field service in the Rhine-Main region. Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz and Head of Development Marcus Lott were present at the start of production in Rüsselsheim.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN

“With the new Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN we are opening the next chapter in our sustainable mobility offensive. Clever concept combines the advantages of hydrogen fuel cell propulsion with the versatility and capabilities of our best-selling light commercial vehicle,” said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz at Opel's headquarters in Rüsselsheim.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN: Head of Development Marcus Lott & Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz

Head of Development Marcus Lott added: “New Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN perfectly meets the requirements of fleet customers. Hydrogen van is the ideal solution for driving long distances with zero emissions as well as for transporting larger loads without losing time while charging the batteries. Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN leads zero-emissions mobility into the future, especially for commercial use.”

Clever concept: Long driving range, zero emissions, quick refuelling

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is based on the existing battery electric Opel Vivaro-e, the “2021 International Van of the Year”. With full tanks of hydrogen, driving range is more than 400 kilometres (WLTP 1). The 45 kW fuel cell is capable of generating enough power for continuous highway driving. It takes only three minutes to refuel with hydrogen – about the same time needed to fill up a conventional diesel or petrol vehicle.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN: With full tanks of hydrogen, driving range is more than 400 kilometres

The 10.5 kWh lithium-ion battery provides dynamic peak power when required, for example, at start-up and under acceleration. Since the battery covers power needs in such situations, the fuel cell can run at optimum operating conditions. Battery also enables regenerative braking, while the plug-in capability offers the opportunity to recharge the battery externally if necessary, e.g. at a charging station, providing 50 km of pure battery electric range. Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN features a three-phase on-board charger (11 kW) and a mode 2 charging cable as standard.

Thanks to smart packaging, Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN demands no compromises on space compared to the combustion engine versions, offering up to 5.3 or 6.1 cubic metres of cargo volume. Fuel cell electric LCV is available in lengths M and L (4.95 and 5.30 metres) with up to 1,000 kilogrammes of payload.

Like its battery-electric sibling and those with internal combustion engines, Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN offers an unusually wide range of driver assistance systems that enhance safety. The equipment includes a 180-degree panorama rear view camera, blind-spot alert and front/rear park pilot.

Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment system operates via voice recognition or colour touchscreen and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation system offers maps for Europe, dynamic route guidance and TMC. Users can also cool or heat the vehicle during recharging via “OpelConnect” and programme charging times with the “myOpel” app.

New Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN benefits from more than 20 years of experience in the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at Opel and Stellantis. Production takes place at Opel Special Vehicles (OSV) in Rüsselsheim. With the new Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN, Opel is continuing its electrification offensive. Customers have choice of selecting drive concept in the Opel LCV portfolio that suits their application. Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN complements the Combo-e, Vivaro-e and Movano-e battery-electric vans that are already available to order.

Detox to the Max: Opel Combines Full Connectivity with Intuitive Operation in All-New Opel Astra

  • Premiere in the all-new Opel Astra: “Hey Opel” – Networked natural voice recognition
  • Reduced to the essentials: Digital Pure Panel cockpit with intuitive operation
  • Opel Live Navigation: Real-time route guidance with over-the-air map updates
  • Totally personal: Customer preferences stored in profiles as avatars
  • Fully networked: New generation of intelligent driver assistance systems

All-New Opel Astra features latest generation of fully networked assistance systems

“Hey Opel” – two words are all it takes and the all-new Opel Astra is all ears to what the driver and passengers want. New natural voice recognition works fully networked like the entire infotainment of the latest generation. Opel consistently follows the philosophy of maximum comfort with minimum distraction. “Detox to the max” is the motto against any form of digital stress. Basis is the unique Pure Panel cockpit with its intuitive operability, as already available in the Opel Mokka, the new Opel Grandland and the all-new Astra. Now the manufacturer from Rüsselsheim is igniting the next stage of digitalisation.

Personal preferences can be saved in future as profiles. Infotainment recognises drivers or passengers by their smartphone. Different people can thus activate their individual settings with a touch on the widescreen. Opel designers have created avatars for different characters. When navigation is called up in the Pure Panel, it is supported online in real time (Connected Navigation Plus), which means that traffic jams, for example, can be detected as they occur. Map updates are also available “over the air”, so that the latest version is always made seamlessly available to customers. All-new Opel Astra also features the latest generation of fully networked assistance systems for even more comfort and additional safety.

“With the all-new Opel Astra, we are starting what we will consistently continue in all upcoming models – intelligent software applications for the maximum benefit of our customers. We call this 'Detox to the max'. Drivers and passengers are not overwhelmed with nonsensical information and unnecessary functions. Instead, we offer the best ease of use with innovative technologies such as the new voice control and personalisation of customer profiles,” explains Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz.

The “myOpel App” makes it possible, for example, to activate charging times or the preselected interior temperature for the Opel Astra Hybrid from the smartphone, to load an address into the navigation system (“Send2Nav”) or to contact the dealer for an appointment request for the next service. If the customer wishes, the workshop can make a remote diagnosis, such as whether the vehicle is ready for inspection. Back in the Astra, compatible mobile phones with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be wirelessly connected to the vehicle and also recharged.

Opel will consistently develop the unique HMI (Human Machine Interface) with fully networked Pure Panel, digital detox and intuitive operation for the benefit of its customers. German car manufacturer has access to top technologies from the parent company Stellantis.

Stellantis Targets ~€20 Billion in Incremental Annual Revenues by 2030 Driven by Software-Enabled Vehicles

  • Approximately €4 billion in annual revenues by 2026 and ~€20 billion by 2030, generated by software-enabled product offerings and subscriptions
  • More than €30 billion of investments planned through 2025 to execute software and electrification transformation
  • 34 million monetizable connected cars expected by 2030, with a majority of all new vehicles to be fully over-the-air updatable by 2024
  • Three all-new AI-powered technology platforms to be deployed at scale, starting in 2024: STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit, and STLA AutoDrive
  • Strategic partnerships with leading companies, including BMW, Foxconn, and Waymo, continue to drive innovation, efficiency and shared know-how with Stellantis experts
  • 4,500 software engineers by 2024, not including partnerships, supported by a dedicated Software Academy

Stellantis N.V. (NYSE / MTA / Euronext Paris: STLA) mapped out its software strategy to deploy next-generation tech platforms, building on existing connected vehicle capabilities to transform how customers interact with their vehicles, and to generate approximately €20 billion in incremental annual revenues by 2030.

This transformation will move Stellantis’ vehicles from today’s dedicated electronic architectures to an open software-defined platform that seamlessly integrates with customers’ digital lives. It greatly expands the options customers have to add innovative features and services via regular over-the-air (OTA) updates keeping vehicles fresh, exciting and updated years after they have been built.

“Our electrification and software strategies will support the shift to become a sustainable mobility tech company to lead the pack, leveraging the associated business growth with over-the-air features and services, and delivering the best experience to our customers,” said Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO. “With the three all-new AI-powered technology platforms to arrive in 2024, deployed across the four STLA vehicle platforms, we will leverage the speed and agility associated with the de-coupling of hardware and software cycles.”

Stellantis plans to invest more than €30 billion through 2025 to execute its software and electrification transformation.

Stellantis software strategy works hand-in-hand with the Company’s vehicle electrification plans, detailed at EV Day in July 2021, which targets that more than 70 percent of its vehicle sales in Europe and more than 40 percent of vehicle sales in the United States will be low emission vehicles (LEV) by 2030. Each of the Company’s 14 iconic brands is committed to offering best-in-class fully electrified solutions.

Additional Strategic Partnership Formed

Foxconn

In addition to the closing of Mobile Drive planned for December 31, 2021, the new non-binding memorandum of understanding signed with Foxconn aims at designing a family of purpose-built micro-controllers to support Stellantis and third-party customers. The partnership is intended to develop four families of chips that will cover over 80 percent of the Company’s micro-controllers’ needs, helping to greatly simplify the supply chain. Adoption and installation of products into Stellantis vehicles is targeted by 2024.

Waymo

Stellantis also continues its dedicated projects with Waymo. As Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids equipped with the Waymo Driver provide thousands of fully autonomous rides in Phoenix, Arizona (USA), Stellantis and Waymo have now expanded their partnership to local delivery services. Building on Stellantis’ leadership in light commercial vehicles and investment in electrification, the partners are collaborating on work streams focused on commercial development. Engineering teams will get their hands on Stellantis prototypes in 2022.

Fast-Growing, Software-Enabled Business

  • Stellantis will grow its software and connected services business through five key pillars:
  • Services and Subscriptions
  • Features On Demand
  • Data as a Service and Fleet Services
  • Vehicle Pricing and Resale Value
  • Conquests, Service Retention and Cross-Selling

Today, Stellantis has 12 million monetizable connected cars globally. By 2026, this is expected to grow to 26 million vehicles and generate approximately €4 billion in revenues and by 2030, it will reach 34 million vehicles and approximately €20 billion in annual revenues. Monetizable is defined as the vehicle’s first five years of life.

Leveraging its data collection capabilities, in 2022, Stellantis will launch a usage-based insurance program offered through the captive finance arms in Europe and North America, with the intent to expand globally.

Three New Tech Platforms Coming in 2024

Launching in 2024, the three new platforms will be deployed, at scale, across the four vehicle platforms of Stellantis over the following two years.

Heart of the transformation to customer-centric services is the new electrical/electronic (E/E) and software architecture, STLA Brain.

STLA Brain is fully OTA capable, with 30 modules addressed, versus 10 today, making it highly flexible. It is a service-oriented architecture fully integrated with the cloud that connects electronic control units within the vehicle with the vehicle’s central high performing computer (HPC) via a high-speed data bus. It breaks today’s bond between hardware and software generations, enabling software developers to create and update features and services quickly without waiting for a new hardware launch. These OTA updates dramatically reduce costs for both the customers and Stellantis, simplify maintenance for the user and sustain vehicle residual values.

STLA SmartCockpit, built on top of STLA Brain, will seamlessly integrate with the digital lives of vehicle occupants to create a customizable third living space. Studies show that customers spend an average of four years of their lives in their vehicles and this is only increasing.

STLA SmartCockpit, powered by the Mobile Drive joint venture between Stellantis and Foxconn, delivers AI-based applications such as navigation, voice assistance, e-commerce marketplace and payment services.

STLA AutoDrive, developed in partnership with BMW, will offer Level 2, Level 2+ and Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities and will be continuously upgraded through OTA updates.

Magnifying the Customer Experience of the 14 Brands

Through software and on-demand features, Stellantis is providing customers with the ability to tailor their vehicles to individual needs and desires through OTA updates, further increasing the unique qualities of the varied brands within Stellantis and strengthening the bond between the vehicle and driver.

Year to date, Stellantis has delivered more than 6 million over-the-air updates to its vehicles, and intends to offer at least quarterly releases by 2026.

Today, Stellantis’ connected vehicles provide more than three trillion data points, generating timely, actionable insights. Stellantis engineers are using this information to shorten the vehicle continuous improvement loop, improving customer satisfaction, while generating €1.1 billion in efficiencies by 2030.

Each of Stellantis’ brands are focused on using software to the fullest benefit of its customers, embodied in their individual commitments.

Talent and Efficiency Make the Difference

To support this transformation, Stellantis is creating a software and data academy to retrain more than 1,000 internal engineers in multiple roles and develop its software community.

Company is also hiring top software and AI talent from technology and other industries globally.

By 2024, Stellantis targets having 4,500 efficiency-driven software engineers, creating talent hubs around the globe. Those engineers will ensure the perfect execution of Stellantis’ software ambitions and operate within the ecosystem created by Stellantis partnerships.

Constant Progress: Extended Range for Opel Corsa-e & Opel Mokka-e

  • Opel Corsa-e and Mokka-e ranges in WLTP 1 cycle increase to 359 and 338 km respectively
  • Real-life range-extension through optimisation of heat pump, reducer and tyres
  • Opel already offers nine electrified passenger cars and light commercial vehicles

Opel Corsa-e

Continuous development of the Opel Corsa-e and Opel Mokka-e has yielded significant increases in the driving ranges of both models – not only in the official WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure) cycle but also in the real world.

Opel Mokka-e

On a single charge of its battery, the award-winning Opel Corsa-e, which was introduced in 2019, can now cover up to 359 kilometres1 according to the WLTP, an increase of around seven per cent. Range of the Opel Mokka-e, which went on sale in 2020 and most recently won the famous “Golden Steering Wheel 2021”2, has increased to 338 km 1 (WLTP).

Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz

Range increases have been achieved, for example, through the optimisation of the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) and propulsion systems of the Opel Corsa-e and Opel Mokka-e.

Opel Corsa-e: Propulsion system

Efficiency of the heat pump, which warms and cools the interior and is standard equipment on both models, is now even higher than before. Heat pumps are more efficient than conventional HVAC systems, as they require less energy from the battery, to the benefit of driving range. Customers will notice the improvements particularly when driving in the winter months.

Opel Mokka-e: Propulsion system

Additional contributions to the range increases are made by the new transmission reducer and A+ rated 16-inch (Opel Corsa-e) and 17-inch (Opel Mokka-e) tyres.

Opel Corsa-e and Opel Mokka-e form part of the tradition-rich German carmaker’s comprehensive electrification offensive. Opel already has nine electrified vehicle lines on the market – LCV (Light Commercial Vehicles) as well as passenger cars. brand’s product portfolio will be fully electrified by 2024. Opel will focus entirely on battery electric vehicles in Europe as of 2028.

Opel Corsa continues to make a significant contribution to the successful performance. Sixth generation of the bestseller small car has found almost 44,000 buyers in Germany alone since the beginning of the year. This makes Opel Corsa the most popular small car on the German market. Opel Mokka is also a bestseller - in November Opel Mokka took second place in the SUV B segment.

Significant growth in the battery-electric models Opel Corsa-e (winner of the Golden Steering Wheel 2020) and Opel Mokka-e is also particularly gratifying. Of the total of 4,800 newly registered Corsas, more than a quarter were electric. Proportion was even higher for Opel Mokka. Almost a third of customers ordered the Opel Mokka-e, the winner of the Golden Steering Wheel 2021.

Designed in Germany: How All-New Opel Astra Arouses Emotions

  • Bold and pure design turns all-new Opel Astra into brand design statement
  • Precision in every detail conveys highest quality, inside and out
  • All-digital Pure Panel cockpit focuses on essentials

All-new Opel Astra

All-new Opel Astra with its pure and bold design aims to convey high quality in every detail. Sixth Astra generation, which celebrated its world premiere in September, is designed to arouse emotions and achieve the “must-have” effect at first sight. Design and development teams, around 50 per cent of whom are women, set out to make the German carmaker’s new compact model a real “designer piece”, inside and out.

Bold and pure: All-New Astra reinterprets Opel design philosophy

Following Opel Mokka, Crossland and Grandland SUVs, the new Astra also features the Opel Vizor. New face of the brand and the central exterior design element follows the Opel Compass where the vertical and horizontal axes – the sharp crease in the hood and the wing shaped graphic of the daylight running lamps – intersect with the Opel Blitz emblem in the middle. Stretching across the front, making all-new Astra look even wider, Vizor also seamlessly integrates technologies such as the ultra-slim IntelliLux LED Pixel headlamps. Viewed from the side, the next-generation Astra looks especially dynamic thanks to the pronounced forward rake of the C-pillar.

At the rear, the Opel Compass is repeated by the centrally mounted Blitz, the vertical high-mounted brake lamp and the tail lamps (energy-saving LEDs, as is all exterior lighting). Blitz emblem also doubles as the latch for the tailgate.

“German design is for me the simplicity, the pureness and the technical elements in combination”, says Ilka Höbermann. “It is sometimes difficult to keep this pureness and then add the boldness. It's always all about the harmony and the right balance.” Result is a successful mix of clear and emotional styling that makes the all-new Opel Astra stand out from the crowd of compact class models. Characteristic look is underlined by the new metallic paint. “Team developed a super-fresh and modern yellow that adds some juiciness and boldness to the car”, adds the designer.

Cockpit of the future, realised today: All-digital Pure Panel

Right balance for the all-new Opel Astra was particularly important to the Colour and Trim design team, especially for the interior. “We had to think out of the box to find the best solutions for these materials. You have a really high diversity of different colours, textures, graphics and patterns. To bring them all together, this actually the big challenge. It is like a big puzzle. You combine different exciting materials to achieve nice contrast or balance”, explains Ilka Höbermann.

Result of this process represents a leap forward in interior design and comfort for the brand. Fully digital cockpit combines two 10-inch widescreen displays and the side air vents for the driver under the horizontally stretched and, depending on the variant, fully glazed surface. Analogue displays are a thing of the past in the all-new Opel Astra. A fully functional, high-tech design that combines style with cutting-edge technologies. Opel Astra drivers and passengers look at the precise glass optics of the Pure Panel and can intuitively operate the new man-machine interface – “visual detox”.

Ultra-modern cockpit is designed to convey an atmosphere in which passengers feel secure. Accents such as the finely crafted controls, reduced to a minimum, and infotainment frames and surfaces in a matt aluminium bring a “big value to the all-new Opel Astra”, says Ilka Höbermann. “They can be just beautiful, they can have a functional aspect and they can even make you smile sometimes.” Every detail – from the Opel Blitz in the centre of the steering wheel to the fabrics and stitching on the AGR-approved ergonomic seats (also available in Alcantara or Nappa leather) – bears the unique signature of Opel's Colour and Trim designers.
