One Million Mark Cracked: Current Opel Corsa an Absolute Bestseller

  • Customers’ favourite: Opel Corsa top-selling small car in Germany four times in a row
  • Europe-wide success: Current Opel/Vauxhall Corsa also tops registrations in the UK and Greece
  • Recipe for success: Flexible, agile, ultra-modern and with a wide range of drive systems from battery-electric and hybrid to efficient combustion engines
Opel Corsa continues to go from strength to strength. Opel's small car bestseller is a perennial favourite which is loved by customers and experts alike. Now Opel and the Corsa are celebrating the next major milestone: Since the launch of the current generation F in 2019, more than one million Corsa have left the production halls at the Zaragoza plant in Spain and made their way to customers. And demand also increased in the first quarter of 2025: the number of new registrations in Europe (E29) rose by 18 per cent compared to the previous quarter. Since the premiere of the first Opel Corsa in 1982, around 15 million units have been sold worldwide.

“Our Corsa is an absolute bestseller. One million Corsa of the current generation show that customers really love our small car. With its fresh design, affordable top technologies and high flexibility packed in compact dimensions, it appeals to the most diverse groups of customers. This unique combination makes it a fundamental guarantee for success in our portfolio,” said Florian Huettl, CEO Opel & Vauxhall and Managing Director Stellantis Germany.

Its great success is also reflected in other figures: According to registration statistics from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the current Corsa has been Germany's best-selling small car in each of the past four years. It was also the top-selling car in its segment in the UK for three years in a row (2021 to 2023). In these two important markets, the Corsa once again led the B segment in the first quarter of 2025. From January to March 2025, the popular small car also made it into the top three in its segment in further countries such as Croatia, the Netherlands, Norway and Slovenia. And in Greece, the Corsa was even the best-selling passenger car in the overall market in 2023. Numerous awards from public and experts such as the ‘Best in Class’ Award 2025 for the Opel Corsa Electric as ‘Best Electric City Vehicle’ also pave its way.

Formula for success: Continuous development of flexible small car

There are multiple reasons for the ongoing success: The current Opel Corsa generation impresses with its characteristic design including the Opel Vizor front, has space for up to five people and offers affordable top technologies such as the adaptive, glare-free Intelli-Lux Matrix light making journeys relaxing and safe. Customers also have an extremely wide selection of drive options, ranging from two battery-electric variants to modern hybrids with 48-volt technology and efficient combustion engines. Thus, Opel Corsa offers the right drivetrain for almost every usage profile and need.

Furthermore, Opel is continuously developing its small car, making it even more attractive and suitable for everyday use for customers. Take Opel Corsa Electric, for example: With its 51 kWh battery and an output of 115 kW (156 hp) it now enables a locally emissions-free range of up to 429 kilometres (WLTP 2) – around 6% or up to 24 kilometres more than before. Best of all, customers can enjoy the extended range without facing any additional costs. And as special edition Opel Corsa YES the small car bestseller becomes an extremely colourful head-turner which is also available with battery-electric drive. All of this makes the latest Opel Corsa generation a firm favourite with the customers which will continue its success story in the future.

Stellantis Zaragoza produces its 15 millionth vehicle

  • Stellantis Zaragoza has produced its 15 millionth car, a 100% electric Opel Corsa-e that multi-brand plant produces exclusively worldwide together with thermal version of this model and Citroën C3 Aircross and Opel Crossland SUVs
  • Stellantis Zaragoza is a pioneer in benchmark methods and practices in the Group, and is firmly committed to respecting environment, with intensive use of renewable energy

  • Stellantis Zaragoza reaches a new milestone in its more than four decades of experience with the production of its 15 millionth vehicle, a 100% electric Opel Corsa-e that plant produces exclusively worldwide together with thermal version of this model and Citroën C3 Aircross and Opel Crossland SUVs
In these four decades, compact vehicles such as Opel Kadett or Opel Astra, sports-oriented coupes such as the Opel Tigra, minivans such as Opel Meriva, commercial vehicles such as Opel Combo or SUV like the Opel Mokka.

Opel Corsa is an icon for Stellantis Zaragoza, which opened its doors in 1982 to produce this model, with which it has maintained a more than lasting relationship since it has manufactured its six generations. Precisely, with sixth generation of Opel Corsa and Opel Corsa-e, electrification arrived at plant, continuing with a technological modernization that is the hallmark of the plant.

Citroën C3 Aircross SUV is produced in Stellantis Zaragoza and a few weeks ago it crossed the barrier of more than 500,000 units produced. For its part, Opel Crossland has been produced at this plant since 2017 and 560,000 units have already been manufactured.

In 2021, Battery Assembly Workshop was inaugurated in Stellantis Zaragoza, which assembles the traction chains of the Opel Corsa-e and Citroën ë-C4, manufactured in Stellantis Madrid.

During all this time, Stellantis Zaragoza has made diversification and innovation compatible with respect for the environment. Today, in line with the Group's Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, the plant stands out for its commitment to renewable energy and environmentally friendly production.

It has a self-consumption solar plant that covers a third of the electricity consumption of the factory. Soon, the installation of photovoltaic panels and wind stations will continue, with the aim of ensuring 80% of electricity needs of the factory in 2024.

“It is a very special circumstance that 15 millionth vehicle that leaves our assembly lines is precisely an Opel Corsa-e, because it is the 100% electric version of model with which factory was inaugurated in 1982. It combines past, present and future of this multi-brand plant. It is a tribute to commitment of our workers over years, to our ability to adapt and to our highest level of demand and quality”, affirms José Luis Alonso Mosquera, Director of  Stellantis Plant in Zaragoza.

Successful SUV: More than 500,000 Opel Crossland Produced

  • Popular: More than half a million units have already rolled off the production line
  • Flexible: Sliding rear seat and up to 1,255 litres of boot volume
  • Clear and bold: Opel Crossland with unmistakable Opel Vizor and striking rear end

Clear and bold design language, highly flexible and equipped with cutting-edge technologies – Opel Crossland is highly popular with customers. Compact SUV with the Blitz bolt has become a real sales hit since its launch in 2017. Now Opel Crossland has broken through the 500,000 mark.

There are many reasons for its success: At a length of just 4.22 meters, the Opel Crossland combines maximum interior variability with plenty of space for the whole family. This is ensured, among other things, by the 60/40 split-folding rear seat bench, which can be moved longitudinally by up to 150 millimetres, depending on the variant. This increases the boot volume from 410 to 520 litres in no time at all. If the rear seats are folded down completely, there is even room for 1,255 litres.

In addition, it comes with numerous assistance systems that make driving in the Crossland relaxed and safe. Standard electronic helpers include Intelligent Cruise Control and Speed Limiter, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition, as well as bright Full LED headlights. Systems such as Forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, Driver Drowsiness Alert, Head-up Display, 180 degree Panorama Rear View Camera, IntelliGrip adaptive traction control and more are also available.¨

Opel Crossland not only impresses with its versatility and top technologies, but also with its modern look. Since last year, it has been sporting the unmistakable new Opel design, including the Vizor: For example, only a few elements such as the characteristic Opel Blitz are visible; the front looks as if it has been cast from a single mold and is visually wider. Rear view is equally clear and boldly designed to catch the eye. Here, Crossland has been confidently bearing its name centrally on the tailgate since the beginning of 2021. In Germany, the extensively equipped Opel Crossland Elegance starts at 25,540 euros (RRP incl. VAT) 1.

Successful model is produced at the Zaragoza plant in Spain. Opel has already announced that the successor, like every new Blitz model, will also be electrified. From 2028 onwards, Opel will purely sell electric vehicles in Europe.

[1] Opel Crossland Elegance 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo with 81 kW/110 hp and 6-speed manual gearbox. WLTP combined fuel consumption: 6.1-5.7 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 137-129 g/km. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures mentioned comply with the WLTP homologation (regulation EU 2017/948). From 1 September 2018, new vehicles are type-approved using the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), which is a new, more realistic test procedure for measuring fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. WLTP fully replaces the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), which was the test procedure used previously. Due to more realistic test conditions, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions measured under the WLTP are in many cases higher compared to those measured under the NEDC. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures may vary depending on specific equipment, options and format of tires.

40 years of Opel Corsa: Success story in Six Acts

  • Successful model: Over 14 million Corsas sold since 1982
  • Pioneer: Opel introduces top technologies from higher classes in small car
  • Bestseller: Sixth Opel Corsa generation again a market success
  • E-car: Electric Opel Corsa-e already accounts for around one-fourth of sales

2022 is an anniversary year for Opel: the company has been making innovations affordable for everyone for 160 years, and at the same time one of its biggest bestsellers is celebrating its 40th birthday. Opel Corsa revolutionised the small car class with its premiere in 1982 and today, in its sixth generation, is more in demand than ever. Last year, the current Corsa was the most popular small car in Germany and the best-selling car in the UK. Battery-electric Opel Corsa-e won the “Golden Steering Wheel 2020” 1, now already accounts for around one-quarter of Corsa sales and is successfully competing in motorsport as an emissions-free rally car.

But to fully understand the popularity of the Corsa since its debut in 1982, it is first necessary to look at another successful model with the Blitz – Opel Kadett. Initially an approximately 3.8-metre-long small car conceived and designed to bring mobility to more people at a time when driving a car was still real luxury. Then over the decades customers quickly became more discerning as their prosperity increased. Small Kadett became larger and more powerful in the second half of the 20th century, moving closer to the compact class with the arrival of each version. This created a slot below what had become Rüsselsheim’s classic entry-level model.

So it was high time for a new, genuine small car – time for the Corsa. The new small model rolled off the production line for the first time in the autumn of 1982 in the newly built car plant in Zaragoza and immediately took off on its path to becoming a bestseller for Opel. To date – 40 years after its launch – well over 14 million units have left the plants, most of them produced in Zaragoza and Eisenach.

This success is due in no small part to the numerous top technologies that have been introduced in the various Corsa generations and that were previously only available in higher vehicle classes. These include safety and assistance systems such as ABS and airbags as well as the front camera with distance indicator, traffic sign recognition and lane keep assist and, most recently, the adaptive glare-free Intelli-Lux LED Matrix light. Now in its sixth generation, the best-selling small car shows just how fit it is for the future. Since 2019, it has also been completely emissions-free for the first time: as the battery-electric Opel Corsa-e.

Opel Corsa – Success story in six acts

Act One: Opel Corsa A 1982 to 1993

Opel Corsa A featured close-coupled proportions within a short length of just 3.62 meters. It had bold, flared wheel-arches like a rallye car and an exceptionally low 0.36 drag coefficient which was possibly record-breaking for its class. Chief designer Erhard Schnell had created a sporty small car with crisp, chiseled lines, intended to particularly appeal to ‘the man of the house’. Highlight was the 100 hp Corsa GSi, and diesel power was also introduced. Two-door hatch and notchback line-up was expanded in 1985 with the addition of the popular five-door model. Opel Corsa A became a highly acclaimed top seller with 3.1 million units built.

Opel Corsa A GSi

Act Two: Opel Corsa B 1993 to 2000

Despite success of Corsa number 1, decision was taken in Rüsselsheim to position its successor as a real ‘ladies’ darling’. Opel design legend Hideo Kodama set to work and created a much rounder, softer Corsa, with appealing ‘saucer-eye’ headlamps which perfectly fit with cute, child-like looks. Opel Corsa B was ten centimeters longer and much more spacious inside than its predecessor. It also introduced higher safety standards to its segment, including ABS cadence braking, side-impact protection and front airbags. For special markets, next to the hatchback Opel again offered a notchback as well as station wagon and pick-up variants. Petrol engines already had fuel-injection technology and catalytic converters, while the GSi featured 16 Valves and diesel power was now turbo-charged.  Second Opel Corsa was successful around the world, and sales topped the four million mark.

Act Three: Opel Corsa C 2000 to 2006

In the spirit of never changing a winning team, Hideo Kodama was again asked to design the shape of the Opel Corsa C. Styling was consciously oriented towards its successful predecessor. Opel Corsa grew again by ten centimetres to a total length of just under 3.84 metres and had a wider stance with a longer wheelbase, which greatly increased interior space. For the first time, the body was fully galvanized. Sophisticated four-valve ECOTEC petrol and new direct-injection turbo diesel engines ensured strong power, low fuel consumption and lowest emission values – all variants already complied to the Euro 4 emission standards. Opel Corsa C also became a star performer and sold 2.5 million units.

Act Four: Opel Corsa D 2006 to 2014

From now on, the three and five-door versions go their separate ways: the three-door Corsa has unique, coupé-like styling aimed at sporty customers, just like the original Corsa A. Five-door variant becomes a spacious, fully-fledged family car. Opel Corsa D was still less than four meters in length, having grown to exactly 3.999 meters. With Opel’s ecoFLEX technology, Corsa had fuel-saving Start/Stop systems and highly efficient engines. 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX version consumed just 3.3 l/100 km over the combined cycle and emitted only 98 g/km CO2 (according to NEDC). Fourth generation Corsa sold over 2.9 million units.

Act Five: Opel Corsa E 2014 to 2019

Dynamic, practical and stylish, Opel Corsa E is also a bestseller with around 1.3 million units sold.  Fifth generation is also built in the Opel plants in Zaragoza and in Eisenach. For the first time, the small star tops the four-metre mark, offering high comfort and top technologies over a length of 4.02 metres. Heatable steering wheel, seat heating and automatic climate control are of course on offer, as are the front camera with distance indicator, Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Keep Assist. Corsa drivers are optimally connected with the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible IntelliLink infotainment systems including a seven-inch colour touchscreen. Small car’s sporty top-of-the-line model is initially the 152 kW (207 hp) Opel Corsa OPC and later Opel Corsa GSi with 110 kW (150 hp).

Act Six: Opel Corsa F electric version introduced in 2019

Opel is optimally equipped for future challenges with Corsa number 6. The latest generation of the small car, which celebrated its world premiere at the 2019 Frankfurt International Motor Show, is also available as a purely battery-electric, emissions-free version for everyone for the first time. A real highlight is also the adaptive glare-free Intelli-Lux LED Matrix light, which Opel also offers for the first time in the small car segment with the current Corsa. In addition, there are numerous state-of-the-art assistance systems such as Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking and pedestrian detection as well as radar-based Adaptive Speed Control, which make driving even safer and more relaxed. With a length of 4.06 metres, the five-seat Corsa’s handling, clear lay-out and practicality remain exemplary. Coupé-like roof line is 48 millimetres lower than its predecessor – without any detriment to headroom. Driver sits 28 millimetres lower. Low centre of gravity benefits driving performance and handling. Latest Corsa is more direct and more dynamic – for more fun behind the wheel. With this recipe for success, the small car with the Blitz has once again become the most popular small car and the best-selling car in countries such as Germany and Great Britain respectively.

Opel Corsa F GS Line

Battery-electric bestseller is proving its electrifying effect on the public in several ways: in Germany, the series-production Corsa-e won the “Golden Steering Wheel 2020” 1 – and as a modified Corsa-e Rally, it is demonstrating in motorsport how top performance and environmental compatibility can be combined. With the emissions-free small car, Opel is the first manufacturer to develop a battery-electric rally vehicle that has been competing in the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup, the world's first electric one-make rally cup, since 2021, thus showing the future of rallying.

Zaragoza produces its 11 millionth Opel Corsa since 1982

  • Opel Corsa reaches a new milestone in its long relationship with the Zaragoza Plant: 11 millionth unit of this model has just rolled off the assembly line of this production center
  • Since 1982, Zaragoza and Opel Corsa are practically synonymous words. Since its inauguration to the present day, the Aragonese factory has manufactured the six generations of this model
  • Produced in Aragon exclusively worldwide, Opel Corsa F is the model of the brand best-selling in the world. It stands out both for its attractive and elegant design, as well as for its high level of safety, performance and comfort. These qualities, together with the possibility of opting for a 100% electric version, the Opel Corsa-e, have been key to its commercial success

For almost four decades, Opel Corsa rhymes with Zaragoza. Aragonese plant opened its doors in 1982 to produce this model, with which it has maintained a more than lasting relationship: it has manufactured its six generations and is currently in charge of assembling the Opel Corsa as a world exclusive, including its 100% version. electric, new Opel Corsa-e.

Today, the Zaragoza Plant dresses up to experience a new milestone in its long idyll with the compact Opel urbanite: the 11 millionth unit of the Opel Corsa has left its facilities. A magic number for both the factory and its workers who, in the last 39 years, have seen all these cars pass through the hands and care of generations of operators and engineers.

If all the Opel Corsa produced in Zaragoza since 1982 were lined up, they would go around the world and there would still be enough vehicles to cover the distance between the Aragonese capital and Beirut. A comparison that gives an idea of the importance of this car for the brand of lightning. Since its launch it has been a strategic model in its range. It is the best-selling Opel vehicle, as well as being one of the great pillars of the German firm's electrification process. Currently, it represents more than a third of the brand's registrations on the five continents.

Thanks to this commercial success, Stellantis Plant in Zaragoza has established itself as a key production center for Opel, since the brand's sales leader, New Corsa, and the Opel Crossland, the SUV that follows in the sales ranking.

Launched at the end of 2019, the sixth generation of the Opel Corsa has become a benchmark in the B segment due to its attractive design, its features, its technological equipment and its interior space. Its electric version, the Opel Corsa-e, marks the difference between the zero-emission models in its category thanks to its 359 km of autonomy, its power of 136 HP (100 kW) and its maximum instantaneous torque of 260 Nm, which provides capacity response, agility and dynamic behavior.

It incorporates technologies normally reserved for higher segments, such as the adaptive matrix lighting system IntelliLux LED or advanced driving assistance functions among which the high-tech front camera, traffic sign reader, radar based Adaptive Cruise Control with stop and go functionality, sensor based lateral assist or active lane assist.

“Opel Corsa is an iconic model of our brand that is manufactured, exclusively worldwide, in Zaragoza, a city where its production began in 1982. For 40 years, it represents the brand's offer in a key category, segment B, where its six generations have been a benchmark for its modern and dynamic design, for incorporating the most advanced technology of each era, as well as for its comfort and interior space. Reaching 11 million units produced gives us an idea of both the good work of the Zaragoza Plant and the solidity of the Corsa concept, which have succeeded in very diverse times, conditions and markets ”, said Pedro Lazarino , Director of Opel for Spain and Portugal.

“ Present since the inauguration of the factory in 1982, the Opel Corsa is a key model in the history of the Zaragoza Plant, as evidenced by the 11 million units produced at our facilities to date. A figure that says a lot about the maximum level of demand and quality of the factory and the adaptability and commitment of its workers over the years. These qualities have made it possible to produce its sixth generation, built on an innovative multi-energy platform, exclusively worldwide. Quite a challenge that has required a deep modernization of the facilities and manufacturing methods ”, says Manuel Munárriz, Director of the Zaragoza Plant.

Success Story Continues: Opel has already produced more than 300,000 All-New Corsa

Opel Corsa GS Line Plus

New Corsa remains a guarantee of success for Opel: Latest generation of the classic small car has rolled off the production line in Zaragoza, Spain, around 300,000 times already, to be delivered to customers all over the world. Since the market launch of the Corsa in November 2019, the car has been a real winner and has taken various awards.

The 300,000 unit of this model, a brand new white Opel Corsa GS Line Plus with a black roof, has just been delivered to its new owner at the Stellantis plant in Zaragoza, where it is manufactured exclusively worldwide

For example, the fully electric Opel Corsa-e was honoured with the “Golden Steering Wheel” as the most popular small car in Germany in 2020.

Opel Corsa-e was honoured with the “Golden Steering Wheel”

Elsewhere, the Corsa is also proving hugely popular with the customers.Smallest model in Opel’s product portfolio was not only the best-selling vehicle in the small car segment in Germany in 2020 – it is also leading the way in its segment this year. And, at times, the new Corsa was the best-selling car across all segments in the UK last year – a position it is currently holding this year too.

Vauxhall Corsa

From Chile to Reunion and Morocco to South Africa: Opel Corsa is also in great demand outside of Europe. International Opel Corsa sales almost tripled in 2020 and things are continuing to improve at the beginning of 2021: Opel Corsa sales in the Middle East / Africa export regions, Latin America and Asia / Pacific have already more than doubled in the first two months of 2021 compared to the entire first quarter of the 2020. Opel Corsa also plays a central role in further expansion plans and will, among other things, herald the brand's comeback in Japan. This makes the Corsa an important pillar of Opel's export offensive.

Corsa is also key to Opel’s comprehensive electrification offensive. In the first two months of the year alone, more than 4,000 Corsa-e were sold. Private and fleet customers are equally enthusiastic about the suitability for everyday use.

Opel Corsa-e

“Corsa is a real success for the Opel brand and the new generation is continuing the long tradition of this model. With the Opel Corsa and the new Opel Mokka, which has just arrived at our dealers, we have two new convincing models on offer in very important segments. This will give us noticeable impetus,” said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller.

Opel Corsa also gives customers access to technologies and assistance systems more often found in higher market segments. The top features include the adaptive, glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix light that Opel offers for the first time in the small car segment. In addition, the small car bestseller comes with numerous advanced driver assistance systems. Thanks to the high-tech front camera, traffic sign recognition detects a wide range of information, such as LED signs. The speed limits saved in the system appear on the display. Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking and Pedestrian and Cyclist detection is active at speeds from 5 to 85 km/h and increases safety considerably, especially in dense city traffic. Adaptive Speed Control automatically adapts the gap between the car and the preceding vehicle by decelerating or accelerating. If the preceding car decelerates, the Corsa also slows down –even to a standstill, if necessary. If the preceding car gains speed again, the Corsa also accelerates up to the selected speed. Lane Keep Assist applies gradual corrective steering and a gentle nudge if the car leaves its lane unintentionally. Side Blind Spot Alert, the 180-degree camera and various parking assistants facilitate manoeuvring in the city.

Opel Corsa-e is compact, nimble and suitable for everyday use thanks to its range of up to 337 km according to WLTP 1. 50 kWh battery can be fast-charged to up to 80 per cent state-of-charge in 30 minutes. Opel Corsa-e is ready for all charging options – via wall box, high-speed charging or cable for household sockets – and an eight-year/160,000km warranty covers the battery.

Sixth generation of the small car is even more modern, efficient, dynamic and attractive than its predecessors. All-New Opel Corsa is one of the most aerodynamic models in its class and considerably lighter than its predecessor. In addition, there are highly efficient engines with lower fuel consumption and CO2 values than the best of the previous generation.

“Corsa is not only one of the most successful models in recent history with sales of around 14 million units in the last 37 years but also a milestone in our electrification offensive. IAA Premiere: New Opel Corsa Meets Rare Opel Corsa GT

  • Predecessor: rare first-generation Opel Corsa GT on Opel stand
  • Time-travel: 1987 “young-timer” drives 2,700 km from Portugal to IAA
  • World premiere: sixth-generation Opel Corsa in the spotlight at Frankfurt show
  • In the tradition: from sporty Opel Corsa GT to battery-electric Opel Corsa-e Rally

New Opel Corsa meets rare Opel Corsa GT

Opel is celebrating three world premieres at this year’s IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show (public days September 12-22). New Opel Astra with high efficiency engines, Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 with e-All-Wheel Drive (WLTP fuel consumption, weighted, combined: 1.6 l/100 km, 37 g/km CO2; NEDC: 1.6 l/100 km, 36 g/km CO2) and the new sixth-generation Corsa in three versions. The best-selling small car (more than 13.6 million units) is going electric and with the Corsa-e Rally – also making its debut at the IAA – even forms the basis of an emissions-free competition car. At the IAA the new Opel Corsa will be joined by a special guest – a rare 1987 Opel Corsa GT in yellow, a testament to 37 years of fun and success. The not-so-old-timer was driven from its last home in Portugal to the Opel Classic Workshop in Rüsselsheim. From there it will drive to the IAA in Frankfurt, where it will contribute tradition and further excitement to the launch of the new Opel Corsa.

Opel the reliable: 2,700km from Porto to Rüsselsheim via Zaragoza

It took a while for Opel Classic to find a scarce first-generation Opel Corsa GT. This particular example, originally registered in Spain, was languishing, forgotten, in a garage in Portugal. Drive to Frankfurt for the small, unassuming Gran Turismo starts from a carpark at the harbour of Porto.

Opel offered the GT from April 1985 until autumn 1987. It was the successor of the Opel Corsa SR, with a 70hp 1.3-litre carburettor engine. Extra power and the subtle spoilers made the GT the sportsman of the first Corsa generation – until the more extrovert GSi arrived in 1988. A five-speed manual gearbox tamed the thirst and the rpm on longer trips.

Even today, keeping up with the traffic in the Opel Corsa GT is surprisingly quiet and effortless. There is no unnecessary firmness in the chassis, no slack in the steering and no superfluous information in the instrument panel: apart from the usual dials, only a rev counter and an oil pressure gauge. Fuel consumption matches the official figures of the time – more than six litres per 100 km is hardly ever burned. 750 kg kerb weight is a big help here, and also allows a power-to-weight ratio of 10.71 kg per horsepower.

On the way from Portugal to Rüsselsheim, GT drops in at Zaragoza, where it was built in 1987. The car is even allowed to visit the production plant. As the yellow Opel Corsa stops at the assembly line, lots of employees come over as if to greet a long lost friend.

Journey east goes past Barcelona, across France and from Basel along the Rhine. A total of 2,700km for a 32-year-old Opel Corsa that was ripped out of peaceful retirement in Portugal – without any repairs for the long road trip. As the GT pulls up in Rüsselsheim, the Opel Classic team is waiting eagerly.

Project “IAA 2019”: From plucky pensioner to show star

The warm sunshine in Spain and Portugal has been good for the Opel Corsa GT. A life without salty roads means no rust, no rot. Yellow oldie is still in good condition. TÜV agrees and after the check-up for German registration the inspectors put their precious sticker on the licence plate. But now comes the much higher hurdle: the experts from Opel Classic give the new arrival a thorough examination. Several pairs of beady eyes discover numerous more or less serious imperfections – dents in the roof, non-original badging, scratched glass, worn out seat cushions. Even the horn sounds wrong! In the end the car is taken apart completely.

Opel Classic team get together with their colleagues from the Service Workshop. “Project IAA 2019” is formed, under the leadership of Thorsten Götz and Dieter Eder. Piece by piece they rebuild the Corsa puzzle. First the reconditioned engine, followed by the suspension, shock absorbers and springs. Freshly painted body gets new trim and the correct GT badges. Then come the original light-alloy wheels. Finally the windows are installed, thanks to a friendly Opel dealer who has them in stock, of course.

Opel Corsa GT is now ready for its second life that will begin in grand style – at the 68th IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show. Visitors can admire the freshly restored Opel Corsa GT on the Opel stand D31 in hall 11.0. World premiere of the sixth-generation Opel Corsa is bound to benefit.

10 Percent Lighter: All-New Opel Corsa Weighs Less Than 1,000kg

  • Lightweight design: Opel weight-reduction initiative continues with all-new Corsa
  • Flyweight: Lightest five-door tips scales at only 980kg
  • Difference: Next Opel Corsa weighs up to 108 kg less than predecessor
  • Benefits: Improved dynamics, lower energy consumption and CO2 emissions

Sixth-generation Opel Corsa is based on a completely new design, which is the basis for an increase in efficiency. Opel Corsa will celebrate its premiere before the end of this year. Whether diesel, petrol or – for the first time – electrically powered, every new Opel Corsa benefits from the lower weight: the driving dynamics improve, the fuel consumption falls. The lightest version of the next generation even undercuts the magical 1,000 kilogramme mark – excluding driver, the five-door will weigh only 980 kg. Compared with its predecessor, this model variant is a useful 108 kg lighter. This is a weight-saving of around 10 %, although the new model has a similar length of 4.06 metres. Reducing so much weight while retaining similar dimensions is a remarkable development achievement that directly benefits the customer.

Opel Corsa has been a trendsetter, bestseller and favourite of millions ever since its introduction in 1982. Since then, more than 13.6 million units of the Corsa have been built at the plants in Zaragoza (Spain) and Eisenach (Germany).

Sixth generation is now about to go into production and will be available to order this summer.

New Opel Corsa: Multi-energy platform allows various propulsion systems

Intelligent lightweight design begins on the computer, using the newest virtual development methods. The specific use of various steel grades and connection methods enabled the Corsa’s big weight reduction. This includes the consistent use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels, as well as the optimization of load paths, connections, structure and form. Compared with the previous model, the body-in-white is 40 kg lighter. Next Opel Corsa is based on the multi-energy platform for small and compact cars, which allows a variety of propulsion systems. Customers can choose from combustion engines or the all-electric version.

The extra-light, all-aluminium engines, together with optimization of the front and rear axles, also contribute to the low total weight. The particularly compact three-cylinder petrol engines weigh around 15 kg less than the previous generation of similarly powerful four-cylinder units. Highly unusual in the small-car-sector is the new Corsa’s aluminium engine bonnet, which although longer, saves 2.4 kg in comparison to the previous model’s bonnet made of steel. Insignia flagship was previously the only model in the Opel range with an aluminium bonnet. Seats also have been put on a diet. New optimized seat structure saves a total of 10 kg – 5.5 kg at the front, 4.5 kg at the rear. New lighter insulating material was used for fine tuning. Altogether the measures result in a weight reduction that, in combination with optimum aerodynamics and the efficient powertrains, will lead to a considerable reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

From Astra to Insignia: lightweight design strategically important at Opel

Acceleration and braking benefit from every kg saved. Lightweight design is therefore strategically important at Opel. Current Opel Astra, which premiered in 2015, set new standards in this respect.

The 2016 “European Car Of The Year” is up to 200 kg lighter than its predecessor. As a result, the agility and ride comfort of the Astra are significantly improved; throttle reaction is more responsive, the steering reacts more dynamically, the driving experience is more engaging. The weight reduction will have a similar effect on the new Corsa.

Opel Insignia flagship followed exactly the same initiative as the Astra. Once again the Opel engineers’ main objective was efficiency. Thanks to optimized packaging and lightweight materials they could save up to 175 kg on the Insignia Grand Sport compared with its predecessor – much to the benefit of dynamics and fuel consumption.

Depending on powertrain and equipment, the current Opel Insignia Sports Tourer even weighs up to 200kg less than the similar model variant from the first generation.

Opel Grandland X is also designed for optimum efficiency and is one of the lightweights in its class.

New-generation Opel Corsa follows the same route of consequent weight reduction – for improved driving dynamics, lower energy consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.

Welcome to Rüsselsheim: Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller greets the expert audience at the Rüsselsheim Tech Day.

With Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Opel and Vauxhall all under the roof of Groupe PSA, a European champion has been created. The group is now pooling its strengths, creating synergies and releasing the full potential of its brands. In the process, state-of-the-art Groupe PSA technologies meet the art of German engineering. Together, this results in a new level of quality. Groupe PSA thus harbours ambitious goals, such as leadership in the reduction of CO2 emissions.

The Engineering Center in Rüsselsheim takes on an important role within Group PSA. It brings typical Opel strengths to the global development network, including experience in sporty chassis designed for high speeds on the German “Autobahn”, US market federalisation and AGR ergonomic seats certified by “Aktion Gesunder Rücken”. Opel is a tradition-rich German brand, which has always democratised cutting-edge technologies. For Opel, the Engineering Center in Rüsselsheim guarantees the combination of German engineering, precision and innovations that customers can afford.

“We want to build first-class automobiles and also excite our customers through compelling quality,” said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller. “As we announced at the presentation of our PACE! strategic plan in November 2017, we will develop all new Opel/Vauxhall vehicles in Rüsselsheim in future. Furthermore, the Engineering Center will play a key role in the implementation of Groupe PSA’s growth strategy.”

Modular multi-energy platforms: For efficient variety of models

Currently the keyword in the automobile business is efficiency. In order to manufacture efficient, economic and climate-friendly cars, the base design is key. This is why all passenger cars and most light commercial vehicles (LCVs) of Groupe PSA are currently derived from two multi-energy modular platforms – the Common Modular Platform (CMP) and the Efficient Modular Platform (EMP2). A modular platform consists primarily of the floor assembly, the chassis and various powertrains, as well as the base electric/electronic architecture. The platform is therefore the decisive factor for cost-efficient automobile manufacturing and represents 60 % of the material costs. The Groupe PSA platforms are complemented with modules for engines, seats, restraints, cockpits and infotainment systems that can be used in various carlines.

“Thanks to the jointly used platforms, we will – depending on the programmes – save between 20 %  and 50 % of the development costs of every new Opel/Vauxhall model compared to its predecessor,” said Lohscheller.

Cost saver: New Opel models will be based on two modular multi-energy platforms, here the Common Modular Platform (CMP) for vehicles in the B and C market segments.

Different variants for various segments and international markets can be developed on these modular platforms: four and five-door sedans and hatchbacks, station wagons, vans, sport utility vehicles (SUV), convertibles and coupés are possible. The Groupe PSA platform dedicated to vehicles in the B and C segments is called CMP. New Opel Corsa, which will make its world premiere next year, is currently being developed on this very compact platform. Opel Grandland X SUV and the family-friendly Opel Combo Life leisure activity vehicle (LAV) are based on the EMP2 – which is used for the passenger car C and D segments.

Multi-energy platform: New Opel models will be based on two modular multi-energy platforms, here the Efficient Modular Platform (EMP2) for the passenger car C and D segments.

In addition, EMP2 also provides each individual Groupe PSA brand with the option of personalising each car to perfectly match the respective brand character. This flexibility ensures that an Opel model is distinctively different to the Peugeot, Citroën or DS Automobiles model based on the same platform.

“Hardware, software, the choice of modules, different set-ups, calibration – all this helps us create a brand-specific character for each and every car. It also permits us to safeguard and further develop the Opel DNA and make sure that an Opel drives like an Opel,” said Christian Müller, Managing Director Engineering.

State-of-the-art powertrains for lowest CO2 emissions

Opel goes electric. The electrification of the Opel product portfolio is at the core of the PACE! strategic plan. One of the main goals of this plan is to meet the 95-gramme CO2 limit of the EU by 2020. Groupe PSA is looking to take over a leading role on low CO2 emissions – not only because it has been mandated by the authorities but also because the customers expect it. The Opel model range is therefore quickly transitioning to the efficient, flexible and electrified platforms of the Groupe PSA. By 2024, all Opel/Vauxhall passenger cars will be based on these so-called multi-energy platforms. The new CMP is the basis both for conventional propulsion systems as well as for a generation of electric vehicles (from urban to SUV). In addition, EMP2 is the basis for the next generation of plug-in hybrid vehicles (SUV, CUV, mid-range and high-end vehicles). These platforms enable a flexible adaptation to the development of the powertrain mix according to future market demands.

Opel will already have four electrified model lines on the market by 2020, including the Opel Ampera-e, Opel Grandland X SUV as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and the next Opel Corsa generation with a battery electric vehicle (BEV). Moving forward, all European passenger car lines will be electrified, either with a battery electric or plug-in hybrid variant, alongside models powered by highly efficient combustion engines. Opel/Vauxhall will thus become a leader in emissions reduction and be a fully electrified European passenger car brand by 2024. The electrification of the light commercial vehicle portfolio will begin in 2020 to meet customer needs and future requirements of urban areas.

The engineering team in Rüsselsheim is currently making a major contribution to the development of the electric version of the new Opel Corsa generation, a battery-powered variant. Opel can draw on a wealth of experience with its two electric cars Opel Ampera (premiere Geneva Motor Show 2009) and Opel Ampera-e (Paris 2016).

The Opel Ampera-e fully suitable for everyday use set standards with its range of up to 520 kilometres according to the New European Driving Cycle.

Be it hardware, software, battery-pack or manufacturing, Rüsselsheim’s expertise in all these areas is highly valued by Groupe PSA. The new Opel Corsa, including the electric variant, will be built in the Spanish plant in Zaragoza.

Research & development for the entire Groupe PSA in Rüsselsheim

The Opel Engineering Center is taking over a key role within Groupe PSA. It brings typical Opel strengths to the company’s global research and development networks. Amongst others, this includes the experience with sporty chassis designed for the high speeds permitted on the German “Autobahn” along with US market federalisation and the AGR-certified (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.) ergonomic seats. The Rüsselsheim Engineering Center will continue to ensure the connection between German engineering, precision and affordable innovations for the Opel brand. As already announced during the presentation of the PACE! plan on November 9, 2017, all new Opel/Vauxhall vehicles will be developed in Rüsselsheim. At the same time, the Rüsselsheim Engineering Center shows that it will play an integral part in supporting Groupe PSA’s growth strategy.

The engineering team in Rüsselsheim also leads the development of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) of Groupe PSA that are built on a dedicated LCV platform. This global responsibility includes the development of an LCV platform and modules from advanced development to production maturity. The development priorities also include the networking and electrification of light commercial vehicles along with automated driving. Leading the development in Rüsselsheim is a key component of the Opel/Vauxhall LCV offensive. The all-new Opel Combo is already making its debut this year, the next generation Opel Vivaro will follow in 2019.

Moreover, the Rüsselsheim Engineering Center will take on the global responsibility for the development of the next generation of high-efficiency petrol engines for all Groupe PSA brands. The next generation of four-cylinder engines will be optimised for operation in combination with electric motors and will be used in the drive train of hybrid systems. Market introduction will begin in 2022. The new generation of engines is designated for use in all Groupe PSA brands in China, Europe and North America, meeting the future emissions standards of these markets. The power units feature state-of-the-art technologies such as direct injection, turbocharging and variable valve control. The engines are thus highly efficient and will deliver low fuel consumption and low CO2 values.

Another focal point is the continuous advancement of all existing models along with the development of future vehicles and powertrains. For example, this includes the refinement of the Small Gasoline Engine (SGE) and the Mid-size Diesel Engine (MDE) families that are available in the Opel Astra and Opel Insignia and ensuring that these units meet the applicable emissions standards.

Furthermore, Groupe PSA has currently established 15 Centers of Competence in Rüsselsheim. The development teams from France and Germany defined development areas (R&D) within a short period of time in order to unleash the full potential for the entire group. The abilities of the various competence teams complement each other in a global network – to the benefit of all five group brands (Opel, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroën and DS Automobiles). These so-called Centers of Competence enable universal technical standards and optimal realisation within Groupe PSA around the globe.

Opel is now playing to some of the typical company strengths within Groupe PSA. Outstanding seats and sharp shifting of manual transmissions, for example, are just two of the fundamental virtues of every Opel/Vauxhall model. Furthermore, the Opel engineers have extensive experience in fuel cell development and in the area of test automation. They will also bring a wealth of knowledge in US market federalisation to the table and make this available to Groupe PSA. In total, 15 of these dedicated areas have now been brought together in the Centers of Competence to date:
