Unveiled: All-New Opel Grandland Celebrates World Premiere in Eisenach

Yesterday, Opel lifted the lid on its latest newcomer and showed the first pictures of the new Grandland. At the same time, the next generation of Opel's top-of-line SUV is celebrating its world premiere – at the Eisenach plant in Thuringia where Opel CEO Florian Huettl, together with Jörg Escher, Managing Director of the Eisenach plant, and chief engineer Dirk Kaminski, presented the new Opel Grandland to the workforce and media representatives. Afterwards, the guests and journalists were able to see the state-of-art Opel Grandland production for themselves during a tour of the plant.

“All-new Opel Grandland is ‘made in Germany’ through and through. It will exclusively drive off the production line in Eisenach. To this end, over the past few months we have developed the location into a real 'electric plant' – with a battery shop and a production facility in which our top SUV is fully flexible in all drive variants on a common line. All-new Opel Grandland will be fully electric for the first time and will further broaden our range of electric cars. We are giving the starting signal for this here and today,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl to the journalists.

Eisenach plant managing director Jörg Escher added: “Eisenach team took on the great challenge of automotive transformation together and implemented it with outstanding commitment. I would like to thank all employees for their tireless dedication and great performance. And I am sure that all-new Opel Grandland will also come to customers in the well-known Eisenach top quality right from the start.”

Investments in Eisenach: €130 million for transformation to “electric plant”

In addition to hybrid drives, all-new Opel Grandland will also drive off the production line for the first time as a battery-electric, locally emissions-free Grandland Electric. The new SUV is the first Opel model to be based on the state-of-the-art STLA Medium platform, which was specifically designed for battery-electric models and is now being used in Eisenach. Thanks to the new architecture, particularly flat battery packaging with a new Opel Grandland Electric can travel up to around 700 kilometres locally emissions-free according to WLTP 1.

In order to make the Eisenach plant, which has been constantly developing since its inauguration in 1992, fit for future production of electrified models, the company has invested €130 million in the site. This has led to significant changes in production. For example, modifications were carried out in the body shop as well as in final assembly, which make it possible to produce vehicles based on both the multi-energy platform and the STLA Medium platform. In addition, the entire conveyor system was adapted and strengthened, the body shop was fully automated and many state-of-the-art camera systems were installed in the various areas for detailed inspection.

A brand-new battery shop has also been created, where the battery packs for the electric Grandland are assembled on site. Special high-voltage experts were trained for this task. Eisenach was able to draw on the experiences of its colleagues in Rüsselsheim. There is already such a battery shop at Opel's headquarters, which is part of the production of the Opel Astra Electric and the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric.

It fits perfectly with the electric Opel Grandland and its own battery assembly that Eisenach is planning to start building its own solar park to provide electricity this year. Green electricity will then be generated for the plant using photovoltaics on an area of around 14 hectares. In addition to the 20-megawatt photovoltaic park, a 1.5-megawatt heat pump will support the plant's heat supply in the future. The gradual conversion to renewable energies also helps ensure that the plant is well-positioned for the future.

And in accordance with the company's strategy to reduce CO2 emissions continuously and consistently in every area, the supply chain at the Thuringian location was also realigned. In the future, the new Opel Grandland will increasingly be transported to customers via the plant's railway sidings with Deutsche Bahn. Especially long-distance transports, such as those to Turkey and Great Britain, will be carried out by rail.

Opel Unveils Stunning Next Generation Grandland SUV

Stylish and dynamic, spacious and versatile with a fully electrified drivetrain portfolio – this is new Opel Grandland unveiled by Rüsselsheim-based carmaker today. Newcomer brings many design features first seen on Opel Experimental concept car to life for first time on a serial production model. These features include 3D Vizor with illuminated Blitz logo proudly sitting at centre and permanently illuminated “OPEL” lettering at rear. Further highlights include IntelliLux Pixel HD lighting system with over 50,000 individual elements, plus BEV-native STLA Medium platform and new flat battery packaging design which allow for a 98 kWh battery. This will enable Opel Grandland Electric to cover up to around 700 kilometres locally emissions-free (according to WLTP 1).

BEV-native platform helps enable electric range of up to around 700 km (WLTP 1)

Next generation Opel Grandland represents a major step for Opel in making electro-mobility even more appealing. It is first Opel to benefit from Stellantis STLA Medium BEV-native platform. Thanks to new architecture, new flat battery packaging with up to 98 kWh, new generation electric motor and energy-saving features such as heat pump, all-new Opel Grandland Electric will be able to deliver a locally emissions-free WLTP 1 electric range of up to around 700 kilometres. Elsewhere, short pit-stops for recharging are also guaranteed. At a public fast charging station, it only takes around 26 minutes to recharge to 80 per cent of the battery capacity.

3D Vizor, illuminated Blitz, Edge Light Technology and IntelliLux Pixel Matrix HD

New underpinnings also gave designers a new freedom and impressive stance of new Opel Grandland becomes apparent at the very first glance. Thanks to 173 mm of additional length, 19 mm of additional height and 64 mm of additional width compared to its predecessor, newcomer conveys confidence (Length: 4650 mm; width: 1905 mm; height: 1660 mm). And combined with up to 20-inch alloy wheels this helps it sit boldly and comfortably at top of Opel’s SUV portfolio. Further grandeur is added by the new execution of characteristic Opel brand face: 3D Vizor. This element is combined with illuminated Opel Blitz logo which is made even more prominent using Edge Light Technology. All-new Opel Grandland embraces “Opel Compass” design that Opel Experimental concept cart introduced. It builds on principles of centre crease, with all features being organised horizontally with the “Electrified Blitz” emblem at centre.

New illuminated logo is also accompanied by yet another lighting innovation from Rüsselsheim engineers – industry-leading IntelliLux Pixel Matrix HD. System offers over 50,000 elements (51,200 to be precise, with 25,600 on each side) for high-definition light distribution and celebrates its debut in newcomer. Based on traffic situation, up and oncoming objects are detected by a camera and IntelliLux Pixel Matrix HD light cuts out these objects even more precisely than standard Matrix Light technologies and delivers a much brighter and homogeneous light pattern – all while ensuring that other road users are not glared. Furthermore, new welcome/goodbye animations with graphical projections in front of vehicle already give an outlook on future possibilities.

With its two-tone floating roof and contrast cladding, Grandland is visually stretched for a sleek elegant look. Overall body design is organised and structured while remaining fluid and organic. Sharp wheel-arch feature lines flow through car and visually help to push wheels out. This is combined with  robustness of cladded elements around wheels and lower body. Long wheelbase of 2,784 mm and steep tailgate emphasise increased roominess in cabin and trunk. Rear seats can be folded down 40:20:40 and thus, create a load volume of up to 1,641 litres.

At rear, distinctive compass lighting signature including very first integration of illuminated “OPEL” wordmark as part of signature also makes its production model debut. And fully in line with Opel’s Greenovation approach to conserve all resources related to automobile, name of car is no longer displayed by chrome lettering – instead it is centrally embossed in tailgate.

Roomy interior with 16-inch central display, AGR seats and clever storage solutions

On inside, occupants of new Opel Grandland are greeted by further bold and pure elements in combination with a warm and engaging ambience. Architecturally, the interior layout emphasises a horizontal theme, with lines running across instrument panel into the doors, enhancing feeling of width and spaciousness, whilst slightly driver oriented 16-inch central display and high centre console generate a sporty feeling. Behind steering wheel, a discrete wide and fully digital cluster provides essential information, allowing driver to focus on pleasure of driving and, in combination with Intelli-HUD head-up display, avoiding the need to take their eyes off the road. Drivers also have option of manually or automatically triggering Pure Mode. It reduces the content on driver information cluster, head-up display and central display and ensures even less distraction when driving at night or in rain. In typical Opel tradition, frequently used settings such as climate control can also be operated intuitively via a few remaining physical buttons.

Side air vents are integrated into door which also visually emphasises width of instrument panel. Top of instrument panel has a beautiful technical appearance and is aesthetically divided into two surface finishes, to underline overall tone of design. Below this, “edge light“, which is based on same technology used on Vizor, adds a precise glass like execution of colour and light, supported by attractive indirect ambient light on instrument panel, as well as door inserts. Instrument panel mid-section is fabric wrapped, and visually runs into door shoulder, producing an appealing and tactile cockpit.

Interior also provides a particularly involving driving experience: Opel’s ergonomic AGR seats enjoy an award-winning reputation and all-new Opel Grandland continues this long-standing tradition. Certified by “Aktion Gesunder Rücken e. V.” (“Campaign for Healthy Backs”) they introduce a new proximity comfort feature: powered bolsters. This function highly improves lateral comfort adjustment thanks to two pneumatic pockets located in the backrest’s side bolsters. Seats also offer ventilation and massage for driver. Meanwhile, passengers in rear enjoy 20 mm of additional legroom compared to outgoing Opel Grandland. Elsewhere, patented Intelli-Seat feature in front seats – a slot that relieves the pressure on tailbone – comes as standard and ensures outstanding comfort even during long journeys on Autobahn. And all fabrics in interior are 100% recycled!

As a family-oriented vehicle, a strong focus was given on interior versatility. Goal was not only to package numerous storages but also to find innovative solutions making life easier for customers while improving comfort and wellbeing. Highlight of these clever solutions is Pixel Box. With illuminated translucid glass and fabric wrapping, this element not only enhances visual appeal of console – it is also highly functional. Wireless smartphone charger is located behind glass so that devices can be charged while being stored safely. Constant visibility of smartphone also helps to ensure that it is not forgotten in vehicle when leaving Opel Grandland. In total, all-new Opel Grandland offers over 35 litres of interior storage compartments – from Pixel Box to phone pockets in backrests of front seats to large storage under central console which also accommodates a 12V socket.

Alternative drives, frequency selective damping technology and array of driver assistance systems

Customers who prefer other drivetrains to a purely electric option will also find what their heart desires in the fully electrified drive portfolio. All-new Grandland Plug-in Hybrid with offers up to 85 km of locally emissions-free range (WLTP 1) and Opel Grandland Hybrid with 48-volt technology offer further exciting solutions that deliver on driving pleasure while curbing consumption and CO2 emissions.

And while Opel Grandland cuts emissions it still delivers dynamic and comfortable driving pleasure. This is made possible by dampers with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology, which are used in chassis. This unique technology creates a second hydraulic circuit in the damper chamber to mechanically adapt damping force in relation to frequency. Depending on situation, road surface conditions and driving style, it enables different damping characteristics for comfortable gliding at high frequencies – i.e. with short impacts such as on cobblestones or a manhole cover – as well as for a sporty, ambitious driving style with more direct contact with road at low frequencies. Opel Grandland reacts even more immediately and directly to any command from driver and, as is typical for Opel, remains stable when braking, cornering and at high speeds on the Autobahn. Opel DNA is further emphasised by specific spring, anti-roll bar, steering and ESC tuning.

Appealing offer proposed by Opel’s new top-of-line SUV is rounded off by an extensive array of driver assistance systems including, Automatic Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent speed adaptation, and In Crash Braking, a system with purpose of helping avoid secondary collision in case of an accident, all come as standard. Intelli-Drive 2.0 system, which integrates numerous electronic assistants and combines them with semi-automatic lane-change assist and Recommended Speed Adaption, is also available as an option. If the targeted lane is clear, the assistant steers Opel Grandland into desired lane with small steering movements. And Recommended Speed Adaptation ensures that – if confirmed by driver – vehicle's speed is reduced accordingly when a new speed limit is reached or increased up to that limit. In addition to sensors, Intelli-Drive 2.0 also uses information from the over-the-air network. And parking and maneuvering is also made easier by park pilots at front and rear, the rear-view camera with automatic cleaning function and the 360-degree Intelli-Vision camera.

Thanks to its state-of-the-art new platform, innovative new technologies in combination with numerous design features first seen on the Opel Experimental concept car, all-new Grandland sits comfortably at helm of Opel’s SUV portfolio while bringing a new level of all-electric freedom to Opel’s ongoing electrification strategy.

All-New Opel Frontera: Spacious and Fun SUV Also Available Fully Electric

Opel is sounding in the start of a new chapter in the company’s long and successful history: today the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker revealed the first images of the new Opel Frontera. The fun and spacious new SUV with the Blitz will be available as a battery-electric variant from the very start with customers also being able to opt for variants with 48-volt hybrid technology.

It is ideally suited to the urban and sub-urban environment while simultaneously offering a recharging experience to our customers,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.

New Opel Frontera already delights at first sight with its rugged interpretation of Opel’s bold and pure design philosophy. Upright front silhouette and unique front proportions of the new Frontera combine a functional and spacious cabin volume with a very bold and tough, but modern expressive look. New Opel “Blitz” emblem celebrates its premiere on a series model and sits proudly at the centre of Opel Vizor. Bblack “Vizor” gives the front of Opel Frontera a unique identity and seamlessly integrates Eco LED headlamps with automatic high beam, and central Opel Blitz. Vizor is supported by a trapezoidal cooling opening in lower third and emphasises solid and robust stance of the car. Well-known Opel “wing signature” shines in a modern interpretation with three lighting blocks being separated by body-coloured insets. Side view reveals a distinctive C-pillar, which visually splits the spacious cabin. Elsewhere, the pronounced wheel arches and fenders plant the car firmly on the road while also giving the newcomer a solid and modern look.


Smartphone station, Intelli-Seat: Smart solutions for connectivity and comfort

Modern look and feel continues in the interior where clever design meets practicality. Wide horizontal decors on the instrument panel and doors visually widen the already airy cabin. Furthermore, the Opel typical fully digital Pure Panel cockpit with two 10-inch displays and Multimedia infotainment system awaits occupants and is just as eye-catching as the bold and elegant new steering wheel. Opel consistently follows philosophy of maximum comfort with minimum distraction, with a clean, detoxed user experience to avoid any form of digital stress.

Newcomer also caters for those who prefer to rely on their own mobile device by offering an optional innovative smartphone station. After connecting to the station via a dedicated app, the user’s smartphone becomes the vehicle’s infotainment control panel, also interacting with the steering wheel buttons. And Opel is once again bringing seating innovations to a wide range of customers in the new Frontera. Patented Intelli-Seat feature in front seats – a slot that relieves the pressure on the tailbone – ensures outstanding comfort even during long journeys on the Autobahn. In addition, seats are not only richly crafted and sculpted but are also eye-catching thanks to contrast stitching. Seat fabrics are also available in a fully sustainable recycled material.

Fun factor of newcomer is further increased by a string of smart solutions. For example, charging mobile devices is easier than ever before with a cooled wireless charger and two USB ports available in front and a further two USB ports available in the second row. Larger devices that would normally not fit into the cabin properly, such as tablets, can be safely stored in the centre console thanks to a flexible strap that holds them in place. Further open storage areas in the cabin can take daily carry-ons with rubber lining preventing rattling and sliding. Second row passengers can take advantage of integrated smartphone pockets in back rests of the front seats.

Spacious, efficient and clever: Ideal companion for a sustainable active lifestyle

In addition, new Opel Frontera impresses with its loading capacity. With back seats up, it already offers over 460 litres of luggage space in boot – with the seats folded down, the capacity increases to up to 1,600 litres. Additional versatility is provided by the 60:40 split of rear bench while a second load floor comes as standard. Furthermore, customers who need to take even more luggage on their journeys or want to take full advantage of the roof load of more than 200 kilogrammes can choose the optional functional roof rails.

Like all new Opel models, new Frontera not only impresses with its bold and pure design, but also with its responsible performance. Customers will be able to choose between a purely battery electric variant and highly efficient drives with 48-volt hybrid technology. Vauxhall Corsa is the best-selling supermini in the United Kingdom

Vauxhall continued its strong UK sales performance in March, ending Q1 as the UK’s third-best selling brand in the overall car and van market, according the latest new vehicle registration figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Leading the way as the UK’s best-selling supermini so far in 2024 is the Vauxhall Corsa, while in March Vauxhall Corsa Electric topped the electric supermini segment. Vauxhall Mokka Electric is the best-selling small electric SUV so far this year with 2,122 registered. Vauxhall’s passenger car market share in March has increased by almost 0.7 percentage points compared to last year, rising to 4.89%. This represents 15,553 car registrations in the month. 

In the first three months of the year, Vauxhall’s share of the electric car market increased by almost half a percentage point to 4.67%, while in the overall car market its market share stands at 5.25% year-to-date - up from 4.62% last year. So far in 2024, the brand has sold 28,664 cars – 5,810 more than this time last year.

Vauxhall is the UK’s third best-selling LCV manufacturer both year-to-date and month-to-date, with 4,364 vans registered in March. This gives it a market share for the month of 8.08% (up from 7.84%), while its LCV market share year-to-date is 9.01% (up from 8.72% last year).

In total, 37,404 Vauxhall cars and vans were registered in the first quarter of 2024, which saw Vauxhall’s overall market share increase by 0.57 percentage points compared to last year, rising to 5.82%. This reflects the success of the wider Stellantis group, which has a combined car and van market share of 14.64% year-to-date, up from 13.58%.
