750,000 Orders: Current Opel Corsa Continues Success Story

  • Fifth generation of bestseller: Over 13 million Corsa cars built to date
  • Success story in five acts: From Opel Corsa A to current model

Serial success: Over 13 million Opel Corsa spanning five generations have been produced to date. Opel recently received the 750,000th order for the current generation Corsa.

Dynamic, practical, stylish and very popular: the fifth Corsa generation is again a bestseller. Opel has just received the 750,000th order for the current small car model since its market launch in late 2014. The stylish all-rounder thus continues the success story that started with the first Corsa in 1982. To date, more than 13 million Corsa vehicles from all generations have been built.

“The Corsa is one of our most important models in Europe and accounts for around one-quarter of Opel’s total sales volume. Depending on the version, it is the perfect car for singles and couples as well as for the whole family,” says Peter Küspert, Opel/Vauxhall Vice President Sales & Aftersales.

And the Corsa has not just won over customers, over the years it has also collected many awards, including the recent “Small Car of the Year 2016” title in Ireland, “Eco Car of the Year 2016” in Latvia, “Most Sensible Car 2015” and “Value Champion 2015” in Germany as well as the AUTOBEST award “Best Buy Car of Europe for 2015”. This shows that the Opel Corsa is a true European.

There are good reasons for this success: Opel Corsa combines a pleasant, stylish atmosphere and driving fun with top technologies from higher vehicle classes. In the small bestseller, the Opel design philosophy “Sculptural artistry meets German precision” meets top comfort and modern assistance systems as well as best digital connectivity with Opel OnStar and IntelliLink infotainment. The portfolio also impresses with powerful and efficient turbo gasoline, turbo diesel and LPG engines. The entire package’s price-performance ratio is superb. Entry into the Corsa world is already possible for €11,995 for the sporty three-door model with a 51 kW/70 hp 1.2-liter gasoline engine (NEDC fuel consumption: urban 6.7-6.6[1] l/100 km, extra-urban 4.6-4.51 l/100 km, combined 5.4-5.31 l/100 km, 126-1241 g/km CO2). For just €785 more, customers can opt for driving fun in the spacious, family-friendly five-door model (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

Opel Corsa: A success story in five acts

Act One: Opel Corsa A - 1982 to 1993

As the smaller “Kadett brother” the Opel Corsa A debuted with a crisp, short length of 3.62 meters, an exceptionally low, possibly record-breaking 0.36 drag coefficient and bold, flared wheelarches in rally car style. Chief designer Erhard Schnell had created a sporty small car with sharp, chiseled lines, intended to particularly appeal to ‘the man of the house’. The highlight was the 100 hp Corsa GSi, and diesel power was also introduced. The two-door hatch and notchback line-up was expanded in 1985 with the addition of the popular five-door model. The Corsa A became a highly-acclaimed top seller with 3.1 million units sold.

Act Two: Opel Corsa B - 1993 to 2000

Despite the success of Opel Corsa Nr. 1, the decision was taken in Rüsselsheim to position its successor as a real ‘ladies’ darling’. Designer Hideo Kodama set to work and created a much rounder, softer Opel Corsa, with appealing ‘saucer-eye’ headlamps. Opel Corsa B was ten centimeters longer and much more spacious inside. It also introduced higher safety standards to its segment, including ABS, side-impact protection and front airbags. For special markets, next to the hatchback Opel again offered a notchback as well as station wagon and pick-up variants. Gasoline engines already had fuel-injection technology and catalytic converters, while the GSi featured 16 valves and diesel power was now turbo-charged. The second Opel Corsa was successful around the world, and sales topped the four million mark.

Act Three: Opel Corsa C - 2000 to 2006

Hideo Kodama was again asked to design the shape of the Opel Corsa C. The styling was consciously oriented towards its successful predecessor. The new Corsa grew again by ten centimeter in length and had a wider stance with a longer wheelbase, which greatly increased interior space. For the first time, the body was fully galvanized. Sophisticated four-valve ECOTEC gasoline and new direct-injection turbo diesel engines ensured strong power, low fuel consumption and lowest emission values – all variants already complied to the stringent Euro 4 emission standards. The Corsa C also became a star performer and sold 2.5 million units.

Act Four: Opel Corsa D - 2006 to 2014

Like the Opel Corsa B, the three and five-door versions went their separate ways: the three-door Opel Corsa had unique, coupé-like styling aimed at sporty customers, just like the original Opel Corsa A. The five-door variant became a spacious, fully-fledged family car. Opel Corsa D was just under four meters long. With Opel’s ecoFLEX technology, the Corsa had fuel-saving Start/Stop systems and highly efficient engines. The fourth generation reached sales of 2.8 million units.

Act Five: Opel Corsa E - Since 2014

With 750,000 orders to date, the fifth Corsa generation is also built in the Opel plants in Zaragoza and Eisenach as three and five-door variants. Eisenach is also home to production of the Opel ADAM family, so now the Corsa has little brothers – just like the Kadett once had the Corsa.

Breath of fresh air: New Opel KARL ROCKS exudes offroad flair with its increased ride height and ground clearance, silver colored skid plates and black protective claddings.

The new Opel KARL ROCKS has arrived at dealers and is ready to dazzle showroom visitors with its trendy outdoor look and feel. The Opel KARL ROCKS bears a strong resemblance to a true offroader and shares many virtues connected with this vehicle class such as an elevated seating position that enables better visibility and easier access to the cabin. Furthermore, the youngest member of the Opel ROCKS family maintains the unquestionable practicality of the Opel KARL with five doors, five seats, compact dimensions and a maximum trunk space of more than 1,000 liters making it the ideal vehicle for a broad audience of city dwellers. Like its slightly less extrovert sibling, the Opel KARL, the newcomer is thus big on everything – except size and price with the entry-level Opel KARL ROCKS available for €12,600 (RRP including VAT in Germany).

At a showroom near you: New Opel KARL ROCKS is ready to dazzle customers at dealers across Europe.

Clever design tweaks set the Opel KARL ROCKS apart from most of its A-segment rivals. The functional silver roof rails, rugged front and rear bumpers with integrated skid pads, front and rear wheelhouse moldings and unique 15-inch bi-color-look alloy wheels blend in perfectly with typical Opel design cues such as the Opel blade that sweeps dynamically up towards the rear. Combined with the sloping roofline this creates a dynamic, sporty appearance that links the Opel KARL ROCKS to the Opel KARL while simultaneously giving it a distinct rugged look.

Nice view: New Opel KARL ROCKS has a distinctive offroad appearance with its protective cladding.

The car’s outgoing personality is further emphasized by an 18-mm increase in ride height enabling enhanced visibility and a better ground clearance. Therefore, Opel KARL ROCKS can also venture off asphalt roads and negotiate uneven surfaces. Furthermore, the 18-mm increase facilitates ingress and egress.

The outdoor character created by the exterior design continues on the inside of the car with front door sill plates and the high gloss frame for the infotainment system The optional Radio R 4.0 IntelliLink system brings the world of smartphones to the Opel KARL ROCKS via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. As of this summer, buyers in search of an integrated navigation system can order the urban rocker with the Navi 4.0 IntelliLink system. The connectivity offering of the Opel KARL ROCKS is rounded off by the availability of the OnStar personal connectivity and service assistant including the new Personal Assistant service. It allows OnStar subscribers to book hotel rooms[1] and search for suitable parking spots[2] via an OnStar Advisor.

However, Opel KARL ROCKS has much more to offer than its enticing looks and stylish interior – it is also just as practical as the Opel KARL. Four doors guarantee easy access to the front and rear seats while the five seats ensure that even families can enjoy Opel’s SUV-inspired mini car. And when needed, the rear seats, with a 40/60 split as standard, can be folded down completely giving the Opel KARL ROCKS an impressive total trunk space of exactly 1,013 liters.

Under the hood, the Opel KARL ROCKS shares the 1.0 liter, three cylinder gasoline engine (NEDC fuel consumption: urban 5.6-5.2 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.2-4.0 l/100 km, combined 4.7-4.4 l/100 km; 106-101 g/km CO2) of its KARL sibling The unit delivers 55 kW/75 hp and is paired to a five-speed manual gearbox as standard.

Alternatively, Opel KARL ROCKS buyers can choose the optional Easytronic 3.0 gearbox. The five-speed automated transmission combines the comfort advantages of an automatic transmission with the efficiency of a manual gearbox. It automatically selects the appropriate gear for best possible fuel consumption, but is based on a manual transmission optimized for smaller engines which enables ultra-economical driving. The driver can take manual control of Easytronic 3.0 at any time by pulling or pushing the gear selector lever.
Furthermore, the Opel KARL ROCKS also caters for customers looking for an alternative fuel offering and is available with the 1.0 LPG ecoFLEX ex works (NEDC LPG consumption: urban 7.1 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.2 l/100 km, combined 5.9 l/100 km; 95 g/km CO2; NEDC fuel consumption: urban 5.8 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.1 l/100 km, combined 4.7 l/100 km; 108 g/km CO2). When ordered in this combination, owners can cover a total distance of 1,019 kilometers (in accordance with NEDC) between visits to the filling station thanks to the 32-liter gasoline and the 20-liter LPG tanks.

Elsewhere, Opel’s wild child comes with all of the safety and comfort features available in the regular Opel KARL. City mode reduces steering effort at the push of a button, greatly facilitating maneuvering in heavy city traffic. Park Assist is also available and assists the driver during parking by giving an acoustic warning as the car approaches obstacles when reversing. Cruise control with speed limiter regulates driving speeds, which is extremely helpful in busy urban traffic and in residential areas.

!NEW! Opel Insignia 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX Drives 2,111 Kilometers on One Tank of Fuel

  • One tank of fuel: Hypermiler Felix Egolf busts 2,000 kilometer barrier
  • Average consumption 3.46 liters: Around ten percent below official figures
  • Long distance champion: Standard Opel Insignia 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX

Rest in Rüsselsheim: Hypermiler Felix Egolf (kneeling) met Christian Müller, the head of Propulsion Systems at Opel, for a chat about saving fuel.
The Opel Insignia is the master of miserliness in the middle class. Opel officially list a combined consumption of 3.9 to 3.8 liters (104 to 99g CO2/km) depending on the specification for the sedan with the 100 kW/136 hp, 1.6 liter whisper diesel (from €27,945 RRP including VAT in Germany). In Germany, the car is in the A+ efficiency class. However, an independent expert from Switzerland has now proved that this data can be undercut considerably in average central European traffic conditions. Felix Egolf, a former Airbus pilot, is a hypermiler and thus part of a community that is permanently trying to establish new minimal consumption values. During his trip from the Alps to the North Sea and back, he only needed 3.46 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. In total, he drove 2,111 kilometers on a single tank of fuel.

Provisional result: On average, Opel Insignia consumed just 3.2 l/100 km of diesel during the drive from Lucerne to Rüsselsheim, at an average speed of 76 km/h.
Egolf’s tour started in Lucerne on April 6. From there, he travelled to the Opel headquarters in Rüsselsheim via the Black Forest. In Rüsselsheim, he stopped for a chat with Vice President GM Global Propulsion Systems – Europe, Christian Müller. “The fuel gauge in the Insignia still showed that the tank was almost full when Felix Egolf arrived in Rüsselsheim. He managed to complete the first 429 kilometers with an average consumption of only 3.2 liters. It is great that he managed to crack the 2,000-kilometer mark,” said Müller.

Back on the road again: From the Opel HQ in Rüsselsheim, Felix Egolf’s journey in the Opel Insignia continued to the German North Sea coast and back to Switzerland.
The hypermiling tour then took Egolf to Münster, Oldenburg and up to Cuxhaven on the North Sea coast. The return leg saw him pass Hanover, Kassel, St. Gallen before coming to a successful end in Zurich on April 8.

“I have wanted to crack the 2,000 kilometer barrier for some time now but I couldn’t find the car to do it. The excellent aerodynamics of the Opel Insignia (cd value of 0.26 plus small frontal area) combined with the Eco Contact 5 low-rolling resistance tires contributed to this outstanding result. This hypermiling tour with the Opel Insignia also shows that anybody who has an anticipatory driving style can easily equal or better the official consumption figures. Anybody can be a hypermiler,” said Egolf.

On the drive to Cuxhaven, Felix Egolf appreciated the qualities of the Opel Insignia, especially as a comfortable touring sedan. The engine impressed with maximum torque of 320 Newton meters, which is already available in a low and thus fuel-saving rpm range between 2,000 and 2,250 rpm, exemplary smoothness and plenty of power.

Packed with power, plenty of torque, low emissions and low consumption - and all of this combined with exemplary smoothness, this is what the Opel Insignia 1.6 CDTi ecoFLEX with 136 hp stands for. The impressive maximum torque of 320 Newton meters already lies within the engine speed range between 2,000 and 2,250 rpm. Opel’s flagship also comes with a wide range of technological, safety and comfort aspects, for example ultra-modern radar-based and camera-based assistance systems: Everything from the Adaptive Cruise Control, the Side Blind Zone Alert to the Forward Collision Assist are all included. Furthermore, the excellent premium seats certified by AGR – the German healthy back expert organization "Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V." provide optimum seating comfort and numerous adjustment options, including four-way lumbar support. The personal online and service assistant Opel OnStar also ensures that the Insignia is fully connected and can offer a fast Wi-Fi Hotspot for up to seven mobile devices.

!NEW! Automated manual transmissions: Automatic comfort for everyone

  • Automated manual gearboxes are affordable-alternative to automatic transmissions
  • Lower fuel consumption than manual five-speed gearboxes
  • Easytronic 3.0 available in Opel KARL, ADAM, Corsa and new Astra

Attractive: Easytronic 3.0 automated manual gearbox is an affordable alternative to a conventional automatic transmission for the Opel ADAM, Corsa and KARL.
Smaller cars are popular in big cities where traffic is dense and parking spaces tight. However, the enthusiasm of even the biggest small-car fans can wane after spending hours in traffic jams. After all that decoupling and shifting between first and second gears, they frequently wish for the luxury of an automatic transmission.

Automatic transmissions that select the right gear ratio without any driver intervention are very comfortable and very easy to use. However, they are often too expensive for most drivers of smaller cars. The difference in price between cars with manual or automatic transmission can be thousands of euros.

Fortunately, drivers of small cars don’t need to give up completely on a little luxury. An automated manual transmission, based on a manual gearbox with an automated gear-shifting system, is an affordable, efficient alternative to a conventional automatic transmission for small or compact cars.

Easy to operate, economical on the wallet: Thanks to the automatic shift function, Opel Easytronic 3.0 is more comfortable than a manual gearbox and also enables lower fuel consumption.
Although automated manual transmissions cannot reach the highest comfort levels of full automatics, they do offer considerably easier operation than manual gearboxes because of their automatic shift-actuation. Automated manual transmissions also enable lower fuel consumption.

Smooth operator: The wide spread of five gears on the Opel Easytronic 3.0 transmission reduces engine speeds for pleasant acoustics.

The latest generation of automated manual transmissions, such as the Easytronic 3.0 from the German automobile manufacturer, Opel, are particularly advanced, providing not only enhanced shifting comfort and drivability but also optimized functions such as “creep” and “launch”.

Compared with previous automated manual transmissions, Easytronic 3.0 impresses with smoother gear shifts and reduced reaction times. In addition to automatic mode, Easytronic 3.0 also offers manual gear shifting via simple movement of the gearshift lever.

Silky smooth: The latest generation of Easytronic impresses with reduced reaction times enabling quicker and smoother gear shifts.
The wide spread of the five gear ratios reduces engine speeds for pleasant noise levels, especially at higher speeds. “Creep” mode for slow-speed maneuvers is similar to that of an automatic transmission, and the special start/stop function enables rapid starts and acceleration.

For optimum fuel economy Easytronic 3.0 automatically selects the most fuel-efficient gear and is combined with Start/Stop technology that reduces fuel consumption even further especially in urban areas. In combination with Easytronic 3.0 the new Opel Astra 1.0 Turbo ecoFLEX is one of the most fuel efficient gasoline cars in its class, consuming just 4.2 liters per 100 km (96 grams CO2/km) in the NEDC combined cycle.

Opel offers the Easytronic 3.0 automated manual transmission in the KARL, ADAM and Corsa family of small cars, as well as the all-new Astra, the 2016 European Car of the Year.

!NEW! Opel 1.0 Direct Injection Turbo Engine awarded Powertrain of the Year in South Africa

Opel’s three-cylinder ecoFLEX engine has been singled out by South African motoring magazine – CAR – as the best of its ilk.

Opel 1.0 ecoFLEX  Direct Injection Turbo
In their March issue, which features the editors’ annual Best Buy choices, they selected the turbopetrol one-litre - which does duty in both the Opel ADAM and Corsa ranges - as their Powertrain of the Year. They lauded it for its “gutsy performance and frugal consumption,” and went on to describe it as “a prime example of engine downsizing.”

They also praised it for being refined and characterful.

The 1.0 litre ecoFLEX was introduced to the South African market in the Opel ADAM at the end of 2014 and rapidly went on to become a firm favourite in the marketplace thanks to its exceptional refinement, low-end torque and efficiency. When the fifth-generation Corsa was launched locally early last year, the triple – also in 85 kW/170 Nm guise – became available in Opel’s supermini.

Confirming its status as a benchmark engine is that derivatives from both nameplates, powered by identical ecoFLEX powerplants, were under the bonnets of Opel’s two finalists, the ADAM and Corsa, in the South Africa Guild of Motoring Journalists’ Wesbank Car of the Year competition.

ADAM was the first Opel to receive this new, direct injection engine, developed at the manufacturer’s International Technical Development Centre (ITDC) in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

Opel ADAM with 1.0 ecoFLEX  Direct Injection Turbo
Combined cycle fuel consumption is a mere 5.1-litres per 100 kilometres, with CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km. In the Opel Corsa application the headline numbers are 5.0 litres and 117 g/km respectively.

Opel Corsa with 1.0 ecoFLEX  Direct Injection Turbo
These outstanding numbers are especially impressive given the generous power output and high torque. Maximum torque is already available at just 1 800 rpm and remains at 170 Nm until 4 500 rpm.

Compact dimensions and low mass are achieved with features that include an all-in-one cylinder head and exhaust manifold, and a tiny, low-inertia turbocharger. It even boasts a switchable water pump, which is disengaged when the engine coolant is cold in order to accelerate warm-up, contributing further to the low fuel consumption. Other efficiency enablers include direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and weight-saving all-aluminium construction.

A host of features have all but eliminated noise, vibration and harshness, with the result that the 1.0 ecoFLEX is not only more refined than other three-cylinder engines, it’s also quieter than many four-cylinder units.

!NEW! Saving on the Road: New Opel Astra Sports Tourer with Class-Leading Total Cost of Ownership

  • High quality level: Residual value increased by up to twelve percent
  • Efficiency in the tank: Latest generation engines curb consumption
  • Cutting costs: Tire sizes and refurbished components reduce bills

Best-in-class: New Opel Astra Sports Tourer stands out with the lowest total cost of ownership in its segment.
Just like the Opel Astra five-door, the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer is setting new standards in the compact class thanks to the lightweight construction, comprehensive assistance systems and the powerful new generation engines. Every component targets efficiency without compromise. This results in the compact station wagon impressing with its outstanding Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Thanks to reduced fuel consumption and maintenance costs along with improved value stability, the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer cruises to a leading position in TCO comparisons with its direct competition.

Bright outlook: Residual value of the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer is up to 12 percent higher than the previous model.
“Especially company car and frequent drivers benefit from the high quality level of and the low repair costs for the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer. In addition, we offer convincing business packages. They are ideal for ‘smart buyers’ who attach importance to the certain something but do not want to spend a lot of money. Those who want to sell on their compact station wagon in a few years’ time will also be pleased by the high residual value of the Sports Tourer,” said Peter Christian Küspert, Vice President Sales & Aftersales Opel Group.

Spare parts and tires: Can it be a little smaller ?

Efficiency and economy were already key during the development of the Astra Sports Tourer with the compact wagon losing up to 190 kilograms depending on the variant. High-strength and ultra high-strength steels and new production processes all played a part in this weight loss program. The extra light and highly efficient latest generation engine portfolio with outputs ranging from 70 kW/95 hp to 147 kW/200 hp pay an important part in the weight reduction and therefore in optimizing running costs. Consumption has been curbed considerably compared to the previous generation (fuel consumption and CO2 emissions combined: 6.2-3.4 l/100 km; 142-89 g/km). The 1.6 CDTI with 81 kW/110 hp with low-rolling-resistance tires and Start/Stop reduces consumption for the combined cycle to 3.4 liters of diesel per 100 km (89 grams of CO2 per kilometer), thus saving money.

The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer also scores heavily on maintenance costs. Servicing intervals of 30,000 kilometers or once per year are especially interesting for businesses, company car or frequent drivers. Advantageous insurance rating – the gasoline compact station wagon is at the same favorable level as the previous model – also go easy on the budget. Spare parts are one of the main expense factors in fleet operation or private use with especially tires having an impact. Therefore, everything will be one size smaller in the Opel Astra Sports Tourer. 15-inch rims with 195/65 R15 tires and 16-inch rims with 205/55 R16 tires are the new standard. That saves up to €46 per wheel compared to the outgoing model.

The Astra Sports Tourer also reduces costs for servicing and repairs. Therefore, Opel already have a stock of recycled components including important spare parts such as cylinder heads, transmissions, alternators, steering systems, starter motors, brake calipers, fuel injection pumps and diesel particle filters. All of these parts meet the Opel new goods standards in terms of quality, technology and design while simultaneously reducing the workshop bill by 30 to 40 percent.

TCO reduced, residual value increased

The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer reaches an outstanding level of quality thanks to ultra-modern production methods and high-grade material – and this has an impact on the TCO - relevant residual value where the newcomer once again sets standards in its segment. The predicted residual value for the Opel Astra Sports Tourer with the 92 kW/125 hp 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo Business is at 33.9% after five years and 100,000 kilometers. The residual value has thus increased by around seven per cent or €2,485, resulting in savings of up to €3,374. The Opel Astra Sports Tourer with the 1.4 ECOTEC Business is also exemplary when it comes to fuel consumption. The direct injection gasoline engine combined with Start/Stop and low-rolling-resistance tires delivers combined consumption of 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers, which is equivalent to 114 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Opel Astra Sports Tourer 1.6 CDTI Business with 81 kW/110 hp even goes one further and impresses with a predicted residual value of 48.8% after three years or 90,000 kilometers – almost twelve per cent or €3,465 higher than the outgoing version. Overall, this propels the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer to new heights in comparison with the direct competition – no other is more cost-conscious or efficient.

Opel KARL ecoFLEX: Attention to detail: Rear spoiler for better aerodynamics.
Yet the test winner is anything but a sedate economy model: its new one-liter all-aluminum engine is a member of the highly praised three-cylinder gasoline family, whose turbocharged versions in the Opel Corsa and Opel ADAM impress with outstanding running smoothness and efficiency. The engineers paid close attention to reducing noise and vibrations during the development phase with a low-resonance construction for the block, a split oil pan, the noise protected integration of the exhaust manifold in the cylinder head and a sound absorbing cam cover, which all contribute to the engine’s excellent manners.

1.0 ECOTEC: Three-cylinder engine with Start/stop system, outstanding running smoothness and efficiency.

Exceptional: Superb safety and comfort levels

Opel KARL also sets standards in this market segment in terms of space, safety and comfort: the 939 kilogram, five-door model offers room for up to five occupants and a load volume up to 1,013 liters. Apart from standard ABS, traction control TCPlus, stability control ESPPlus and Hill Start Assist (HSA), KARL can be equipped with a further safety feature highlight, Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

This reduces the risk of accidents with the help of front camera sensors that scan the road. A cornering light function integrated in the fog lights ensures that turning maneuvers are safer for the driver and other road users. On-board comfort can be increased with optional features including a heated leather steering wheel along with heated front seats.

Opel KARL ecoFLEX: Heated leather steering wheel along with heated front seats as option.
The City mode (standard from Enjoy) of the speed-dependent power steering reduces steering effort in heavy city traffic at the push of a button and Park Assist prevents bumps when parking. Cruise control with speed limiter ensures driving at legal speeds.

Opel KARL ecoFLEX: IntelliLink infotainment system

From the fall of 2015, Opel KARL can be ordered with the new-generation IntelliLink infotainment system and the personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar – features normally only found in higher classes. So Opel’s entry-level model will also raise the bar for connectivity in the mini-car segment as all its variants become fully-fledged members of the Opel model portfolio.

!NEW! All-New Opel Astra K: Outstanding Aerodynamics for Best Efficiency

  • Most streamlined Astra ever: exemplary drag coefficient of 0.285
  • Clever design: more compact dimensions reduce drag
  • Attention to detail: rear spoiler, C-pillar and underbody optimized
  • Increased efficiency: great aerodynamics meet latest generation engines

Increase in efficiency: All-New Opel Astra K – great aerodynamics meet latest generation engines.
Lighter, more frugal and more agile – the new Opel Astra K represents a quantum leap in the development and targets maximum efficiency. Its design and vehicle architecture also set standards in aerodynamics and continue a traditional Opel strength – when the Kadett E GSi was introduced in 1984 it was the most streamlined hatchback in the world with a cd value of 0.30. Outstanding aerodynamics are closely linked to economical fuel consumption and climate-friendly CO2-emissions – another long-time Opel strength.

Most streamlined Astra ever: Exemplary drag coefficient of 0.285.

A decisive advantage of the new Astra is that it is much more compact than its predecessor is. It is around 2.5 centimeters lower and 0.5 centimeters slimmer, including the more slender wheels. But to make the vehicle as streamlined as possible, precision and attention to detail were also necessary. The engineers paid special attention to the roofline, the C-pillar and the construction of the underbody. The result speaks for itself: the new compact class Opel is amongst the elite of the most streamlined models in its class with a drag coefficient of 0.285.

In perfect shape: Opel engineers paid special attention to the roofline, the C-pillar and the construction of the underbody of the new Astra K.
“We have made the new Astra more aerodynamic than ever before. The drag coefficient values beat the best values achieved by its predecessor across the board. We gained some important knowledge from the tests we conducted in the ultra-modern wind tunnel of Stuttgart University who we have been working with for many years,” said Reiner Weidemann, Head of the Opel Aerodynamics department. “This helped us make the new Astra the most streamlined compact class car ever produced by Opel.”

Design and vehicle architecture: setting standards in aerodynamics

Clever design: The engineers decided to let the roof of the new Opel Astra K flow out gently to the rear to avoid any drag.
Leaner, smarter and more innovative than ever before – the new Astra epitomizes highest efficiency and demonstrates the next evolutionary stage of Opel’s design philosophy “Sculptural artistry meets German precision”. From an aerodynamics point of view, this means: the new Astra has a drag coefficient of 0.285 with its athletic and dynamic appearance along with the numerous measures taken above and under the outer shell. The new Astra has a total length of 4.37 meters and is roughly five centimeters shorter than its predecessor is. The height has been reduced by 2.5 centimeters to 1.48 meters and the width reduced by 0.5 centimeters to 1.81 meters. These dimensions also have a positive impact on the overall drag, with a cross sectional area of around 0.642 square meters (compared to 0.770 square meters for its predecessor), and thus on fuel efficiency.

In the wind tunnel: The delicate rear spoiler serves as an effective separation edge that cuts the airflow at the top without creating any disturbing wake turbulences.
However, the art of the exemplary aerodynamic performance is down to attention to detail. The engineers decided to let the roof flow out gently to the rear to avoid any drag. The delicate rear spoiler serves as an effective separation edge that cuts the airflow at the top without creating any disturbing wake turbulences. Even the C-pillar with its small edges was designed to split airflow more efficiently than was the case for the previous Astra, thus reducing drag.

Attention to detail: The Rear spoiler and the C-pillar of the new Opel Astra K have been optimized.
The engineers managed to achieve further improvements by overhauling the design of the underbody. Opposed to many competitors, Opel specifically decided not to look to a full underbody paneling. Instead, all parts were examined and reworked to ensure better airflow. The underside of the car now has airflow-optimized structures and battery attachment, the new rear axle now sits higher compared to the previous Astra, thus no longer providing an obstacle for the air flowing under the car. These measures all play a key part in the exemplary aerodynamics. Expressed in cold figures, the most eco-friendly version of the previous Opel Astra had a drag coefficient of 0.325. The basic version of the all-new Opel Astra has an outstanding drag coefficient of 0.285. Even the automatic diesel of the new generation with 18 inch wheels easily beats the most streamlined version of the predecessor with a drag coefficient of around 0.31. And that is not all – an even more aerodynamic and frugal ecoFlex version is planned for the future.

Double efficiency: improved aerodynamics meet latest generation engines

The conscious decision not to use a full underbody paneling also means less weight and consequently lower fuel consumption along with reduced production costs. Advantages that have a positive impact on the price – something that can be passed on to the customer.

Combined with the fact that every new Opel Astra will be propelled by an engine of the latest generation with outputs ranging from 70 kW/95 hp to 147 kW/200 hp customers can look forward to a win-win-win situation. All of the new generation engines combine strong performance and economical fuel consumption with outstanding responsiveness while at the same time offering smoothness and low noise levels. For example, with the 1.0 liter turbo and Easytronic 3.0 the new Opel Astra is the most fuel-efficient and eco-friendly gasoline-engined car in its class (4.2 l/100 km in the combined cycle, 96 g CO2/km). That is efficiency à la Astra.

Whisper diesel for Opel flagship: The 1.6 liter diesels with 88 kW/120 PS and 100 kW/136 PS will replace their 2.0-liter counterparts in the Opel Insignia.
Both versions of Opel’s new 1.6 liter whisper diesel now also show in the brand’s flagship that small-displacement engines with high torque and power leave nothing to be desired. The 88 kW/120 hp and 100 kW/136 hp units replace their 2.0 liter counterparts and were developed to deliver exemplary responsiveness and low consumption with exceptional running smoothness. Together with six-speed manual transmission and the Start/Stop system, the 88 kW/120 hp turbo diesel accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds, matching its predecessor. For the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear, it needs just 10.4 seconds, making it more than two seconds faster than its forerunner. Its moderate consumption of up to 3.9 liters per 100 kilometers is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 104 grams per kilometer (with low-rolling-resistance tires in the combined cycle). The turbo diesel with 100 kW/136 hp reduces fuel consumption by another 0.1 liters down to 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers. This brings CO2 emissions to an exemplary 99 grams per kilometer, undercutting the 100 gram limit so important for many drivers and fleets. Not one to make compromises, the engine adds five km/h to its predecessor’s top speed, reaching a maximum of 210 km/h. The Insignia sedan accelerates from zero to 100 in just 10.9 seconds and from 80 to 120 km/h in 10.4 seconds, quietly and comfortably with superb refinement. Both whisper diesel versions offer powerful 320 Nm of torque available from 2,000 rpm and can be ordered for entry-level prices of 26,670 and 28,070 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany) respectively.

Opel OnStar and IntelliLink with Apple CarPlay: How connectivity works today

!NEW! Frugal Fun: New Opel Corsa E now with LPG

  • Thrifty and affordable: Fuel costs almost 50% lower, attractive entry-level price of 14,745 euros
  • Clean and economical: Opel Corsa 1.4 LPG cuts CO2 emissions down to 113 g/km
  • Refined and powerful: Long range, lively performance with 66 kW/90 hp

New Opel Corsa 1.4 LPG: Fuel costs almost 50% lower, attractive entry-level price of 14,745 euros.
Introducing the Mr. Clean of the Corsa family – green, powerful and economical, the new Opel Corsa 1.4 LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) ecoFLEX develops 66 kW/90 hp and comes straight from the factory with a bi-fuel capability. Specifically aimed at cost-conscious customers, this latest member of the new Corsa family is an ideal choice in the small car segment because LPG drivers’ wallets benefit two-fold. On the one hand, fuel costs plummet by almost 50 percent compared to gasoline due to the low price of LPG, while on the other hand, the Corsa 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX boasts a particularly attractive entry-level price. The three-door model is now available from just 14,745 euros, and the five-door model from 15,495 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

Clean and economical: New Opel Corsa 1.4 LPG cuts CO2 emissions down to 113 g/km.
The Corsa LPG is not only extremely cost-efficient, but also kinder to the environment. That’s because LPG, a mixture of butane and propane gas which the four-cylinder engine burns under the Corsa’s shapely hood, is known for its super-clean combustion characteristics. Using this fuel, the new Corsa consumes just 6.9 liters per 100 km over the combined cycle and emits only 113 g/km CO2 – around 13 percent less CO2 than in gasoline operation. The nitrogen oxide emissions are even up to 80 percent lower.

“With the 1.3 CDTI, which consumes just 3.1 liters diesel, and our brand-new 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX, we have two real ‘eco-champions’ in the Corsa line-up. Once again, they both show how important energy efficiency and CO2 emissions reductions are for us in all model ranges,” says Peter Christian Küspert, Opel Group Vice President Sales and Aftersales. “But these models aren’t only attractive for especially cost-conscious drivers. They also offer many features that go far beyond what’s normally found in the small car class, such as ample space, superb comfort, state-of-the-art connectivity and driver assistance systems.”

Bi-Fuel driving: Long range with low fuel costs and emissions

The Opel Corsa 1.4 LPG offers 66 kW/90 hp in both LPG and gasoline operation and is available with a five-speed manual transmission. It needs just 6.9 liters per 100 km in alternative fuel mode, while CO2 emissions of 113 g/km are around 13 percent lower than in conventional gasoline operation. Fuel costs are reduced by almost 50 percent compared to gasoline. This huge saving is the result of tax benefits stipulated for LPG until 2018. And, looking further ahead, the prospects look promising because tax advantages for alternative fuels are expected to be extended on both the national and European levels.

Space saving and safe: The LPG tank’s installation in the spare-wheel housing of the trunk is both space-efficient and collision-protected.
Another benefit of the new-generation LPG Corsa is that, like all Opel LPG models, it comes ready for bi-fuel operation ex-works. The driver can switch between LPG and gasoline by pushing a button. A newly developed control module now enables an even more efficiently synchronized transition between the two operating modes. This means a driving range of up to 1,200 km is possible without having to stop to refuel. Range and consumption can be viewed separately for LPG and gasoline, as well as combined via an on-board computer. Today there are around 7,000 LPG filling stations in Germany and more than 35,000 across Europe.

Bi-Fuel driving: The new Corsa runs with either LPG or gasoline. In combination, this means a driving range of up to 1,200 km.

Space-saving and safe: Complete everyday use with LPG

The LPG tank’s installation in the spare-wheel housing of the trunk is both space-efficient and collision-protected. As a result, the Opel Corsa LPG still offers accommodation for five people or up to 1,120 liters of luggage space, just like its Corsa siblings. It also features the same ultra-modern driver assistance systems and equipment features – from standard City mode, optional steering wheel heating and automatic Park Assist all the way to Opel’s award-winning IntelliLink infotainment system complete with 7-inch color touchscreen.

!NEW! Fifth-generation Opel Corsa arrives in South Africa

·  All new fifth-generation Opel Corsa set to continue strong 32-year history

·  Corsa redefines segment with innovative technology

· Comfortable, strong and economical: New chassis and powertrain technology raise standards

The all new fifth generation Opel Corsa will reach Opel dealerships in South Africa in March. The local introduction comes just four months after the Corsa’s international premier at last year’s Paris Motor Show.

All new fifth generation Opel Corsa will reach Opel dealerships in South Africa in March.
The Opel Corsa has established itself as a perennial bestseller through four model generations spanning 32 years, with over 12.4 million units sold globally. Together with the Astra, it is Opel’s most popular model, accounting for over a quarter of the company’s sales every year. The new fifth generation Corsa is set to build on its reputation as an all-rounder by offering segment-leading levels of comfort, precision and efficiency.

Initially, the new Corsa will be made available with Opel’s state-of-the-art three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbocharged ecoFLEX engine with three trim levels: Cosmo, Enjoy, and Essentia.

“We have shifted the goal posts with a totally convincing and desirable small car that makes driving easier and more fun. The new Corsa has class leading connectivity, convenience and comfort as well as driving satisfaction,” says Opel Brand Manager at General Motors South Africa, Christopher Cradock.

“Affordability and value-for-money have always been Corsa hallmarks and with the new vehicle, these are set to continue. We have ensured that all derivatives in the new Corsa range adopt a no-compromise approach to those most important vehicle aspects, along with the availability of ‘option packs’ to enhance the vehicle to the owner’s taste and satisfaction.”

With its inspiring design, innovative technology and engaging drive, the new Corsa will appeal to single men and women, professionals with young families, and young-at-heart drivers who love great cars and want something that will set them apart from the crowd.

Sculptural artistry meets German engineering

The exterior design of the new Corsa is all about dramatic surfaces with crisp sculptured lines. As with the ADAM, the design of the new Corsa is ruled by Opel’s latest design philosophy of ‘sculptural artistry meets German engineering’. This design language can be seen in the complex curvature of all the surfaces, reinforced by quality details such as the Opel signature ‘wing’ LED daytime running lights and silver vision bulbs in the indicator lights to avoid an irritating yellow tint when unlit.

Opel signature ‘wing’ LED daytime running lights and Silver Vision bulbs in the indicator lights to avoid an irritating yellow tint when unlit.
From the front, the new Corsa is immediately recognisable as a member of the new Opel family. The bold face is characterised by the ‘wing’ shaped headlights which incorporate the daytime running lights and the low, sporty trapezoidal grille, with its dynamic chrome bar supporting the Opel emblem. The front fog lights are embedded in two low, outward-lying but graphically-connected air inlets with model-specific chrome trim, giving the new Corsa an even wider appearance.

From the side, the belt line extends upwards to create an energetic connection with the roof spoiler. The sculpted flanks feature Opel’s dynamic ‘blade’ side body signature.

At the rear, wide horizontally-split tail lights help to visually widen the car and flow through to the rear shoulders, contributing to the vehicle’s athletic stance. The tail lights also incorporate the ‘wing’ motif when illuminated, with the lower bumper visually connected to the body side ‘blade’ by design lines which flow into the license plate pocket. The rear roofline in particular has undergone specific aerodynamic tweaking for optimised efficiency and stability.

Interior with high-class materials and workmanship

Sculptural harmonious surfaces and graceful flowing lines are key elements in the design of the new Corsa’s interior. The sculptural wing-shaped instrument panel (IP) top-pad combines a subtle blend of taut surfaces and flowing transitions bordered by elegant décor. The décor spans the full length of the instrument panel emphasising the width and spaciousness of the interior.

Premium, high quality materials like those used for the soft IP top-pad, or the décor elements dressed in rich satin chrome, are all worthy of vehicles from much higher segments. Each material used in the new Corsa is carefully chosen to support the premium character of the interior, clearly reflecting a level of quality and craftsmanship born of German engineering.

The three-dimensionally-sculpted steering wheel with the small and efficiently-packaged airbag cover is designed to not only look great, but with ergonomics at the forefront. The switches are integrated into the overall design with extreme precision and framed by a tasteful, satin chrome bezel.

The round, chrono-styled instruments and satin chrome framed switches convey an aura of sporty precision.

Eye-catching: The new Corsa comes with a totally new interior that enhances the perception of high quality and spaciousness, including best-connected IntelliLink infotainment technology and ultra-modern driver assistance systems
The three configurations - Essentia, Enjoy and Cosmo – along with various décor, give the customer an individual and flexible choice. In addition to sophisticated 3D embossed fabrics, a two-tone accent colour which matches the seats wraps from the lower IP into the door trim, visually widening the cabin and creating an ambience more typical of upmarket cars.

The new Corsa also introduces an industry-first seat fabric printing technology. This unique technology enables an unprecedented level of trim flexibility, as well as endless creative opportunities. Once again this level of detail shows Opel to be an innovative pioneer.

The high quality of design execution, materials and workmanship can be found throughout the entire interior. In the dynamic, deeply-sculpted front door panels, pleasantly soft materials are combined with useful solutions such as a compartment for 1.5-litre bottles. The centre console also includes convenient details such as three cup holders. In front of the gear lever, there is an innovative, flexible cup holder.

In addition to the high quality of the cabin, Opel also made it a major objective of the new design to refine the aerodynamics of the vehicle in order to reduce interior noise. Special sealing on the B-pillar, door handles, side- and rear windows along with an optimised bonnet edge reduce wind noise significantly by 2.3 dB.

All in all, the new Corsa boasts a new level of quality, material and workmanship that is usually expected in cars from higher segments. Thereby, Opel substantiates its quality standard of also offering small cars with a premium touch at affordable prices.

New chassis and suspension

Chassis engineers in charge of developing the fifth-generation Opel Corsa set themselves the objective of delighting future customers with a driving experience comparable to the one provided by larger, more expensive cars in terms of comfort and precision. They lowered the centre of gravity of the new Corsa by 5 millimetres and completely redesigned its chassis and steering systems.

New chassis and steering systems
The new Corsa’s chassis does not inherit a single component from the outgoing model. Every conceivable setscrew was turned in order to achieve a better driving experience with new levels of comfort, precision and enjoyment. At the same time, engineers concentrated on finding the optimal balance between enjoyable dynamics and predictable, safe road holding.

New chassis and steering systems: For driving experience comparable to larger, more expensive cars in terms of comfort and precision
In addition to its 5 mm-lower centre of gravity, the Corsa receives a new, stiffer, redesigned chassis. The front MacPherson suspension has a new geometry with new front knuckles which improve the vehicle’s roll behaviour, steering response and understeer behaviour. A new, reinforced sub-frame increases torsional rigidity, while dual strut mounts provide improved responsiveness on uneven surfaces.

Furthermore, the new spring rates and damper characteristics in the front reduce the pitching moment during sharp braking manoeuvres. This results in the Corsa remaining controllable in case of emergency braking, even for inexperienced drivers. The rear axle torsion bar has been redesigned as well, and an enhanced stabiliser has been added to reduce tilting for better cornering compliance and stability.

New steering system with numerous innovations

In order to improve directional stability, the Opel engineers changed the mounting points of the rack-and-pinion steering shaft and optimised its geometry. A newly-constructed mounting for the steering column saves space which is filled with additional padding material and increases driver safety in case of a collision. Furthermore, the steering column possesses special impact absorbers.

The development of a completely new electrical architecture for the fifth generation Corsa enables a more sophisticated level of interaction between its various systems. Optimised software for the electrical and speed-dependent power steering adds additional possibilities. For instance, all new Corsa models are equipped with a new standard ‘City Mode’ steering setting which allows reduced steering effort at low speeds for easing manoeuvres. City Mode is activated at the press of a button, located on the centre console.

Another innovative feature is the active cornering component of the Corsa’s steering which aids the driver in crosswinds and on convex roads. Amongst others, the software is fed with the data from Opel’s ninth-generation Electronic Stability Program (ESP Plus). This system takes care of no less than eleven different functions, including for example, new Hill Start Assist.

The fifth-generation Corsa can also be specified with Opel’s Advanced Parking Assistant 2 (APA2) in Enjoy and Cosmo trim. This system recognises parallel and perpendicular parking spaces and takes over the steering, meaning that the driver only has to control the pedals and gears.

Well-rounded: Brakes and wheels
The base model new Corsa, is fitted with 15-inch wheels and 215-width tyres with ventilated front and solid rear discs which can easily cope with high stress. Pedal feel is distinguished by an exactly-defined pressure point and excellent controllability. The braking system is assisted by electronic aids which permanently receive information from the ABS/ESP sensors. For example, the systems recognise whether the braking manoeuvre is being performed while cornering and distributes the braking force to all four wheels depending on the load.

A car’s life in high speed: fifth-generation Opel Corsa at the test centre

The engineers at Opel’s Test Centre in Dudenhofen have tested the new generation Corsa extensively over thousands of kilometres before allowing it to be presented to customers. The Opel Development Team pushed the new Corsa to its limits during the tests: the development prototypes had to master 40 000 kilometres on the torture track, the high speed circuit and in hilly terrain, equivalent to 160 000 kilometres on ‘normal’ roads. Within only 24 weeks, these development prototypes were put through burdens that a production car would normally only encounter during its entire life cycle.

The new Corsa was asked to prove its resilience time and time again on the torture track. The track delivers exactly what its name promises: more than 900 metres of potholes, humps, the ‘washboard’, a cobbled section and a pavé track. It is a really tough test for the chassis, which will most probably never go through such torture in real life – but the Corsa mastered it comfortably. To put the steering, transmission and brakes to the test, the new Corsa also successfully completed the hill track thousands of times.

On Dudenhofen’s 40-degree banked circuit without lateral forces, engineers can test the stability at high speed. Another circuit which is used during the testing procedure has rising and falling gradients, ranging from 8- to 30 percent, with different road surfaces and a serpentine section including hairpin turns – similar to conditions found in alpine mountains.

The endurance test, which all new Opel models are put through, was decisive for the new generation Corsa. The longest track at the test centre offers many different road surfaces including asphalt and cobblestones, bumps and numerous curves. Here engineers test if the performance and quality they fine-tuned and approved in the development vehicles have been successfully transferred to the production vehicles. This final quality control ensures that any minute disturbances or doubts are eradicated, thus guaranteeing that the new Corsa reaches the customers perfectly aligned with the stringent performance and quality targets set at the beginning of its development.

Frugal, silent, strong: ultra-modern powertrain

The new Corsa benefits from Opel’s biggest powertrain offensive in the company’s history which includes three new-generation engine families and will see 17 new engines introduced by 2018.

The new Corsa receives Opel’s state-of-the-art 1.0 litre ecoFLEX Direct Injection Turbo engine. First introduced in the recently-launched Opel ADAM, it also is the highlight of the fifth-generation Corsa. The engine offers outstandingly sophisticated driving refinement and responsiveness together with frugal fuel consumption – proving that high driving comfort and pleasure can be combined with excellent efficiency.

Developed from a blank sheet of paper, this engine is the first of a new family of small petrol three- and four-cylinder units which will be progressively introduced in the Opel range. A three-cylinder architecture has been selected to reach new levels of fuel efficiency for petrol-powered cars. As some customers hesitate to opt for three-cylinder engines due to their rather high level of noise and vibration, the 200 engineers who developed Opel’s new generation unit in Rüsselsheim over the last three-and-a-half years put comfort at the top of their development priority list.

New Opel 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo
As a result, Opel’s three-cylinder is the quietest three-cylinder unit ever built. Numerous sound engineering measures contribute to the engine’s benchmark refinement, as 40 components and sub-groups have been acoustically-optimised from the beginning of development – such as the cylinder block as well as the structurally isolated fuel injection system and crankshaft.

In addition, a sump-mounted counter-rotating balance shaft further reduces noise and vibration – a universally unique feature for a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine.

The second development priority of the new-generation 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine was to deliver excellent responsiveness – not only the quietness but also the pleasure provided will surprise customers. The 85 kW engine excels in delivering strong low-end torque with extreme efficiency, pumping out 170 Nm from just 1 800 rpm.

New Opel Corsa with 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo
The engine’s responsiveness is particularly evident during acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h, a decisive speed range for overtaking, when this compact powerhouse belies its size by delivering strong power from low rpm. The Corsa makes this transition in just 10.4 seconds.

Start/stop technology is fitted as standard to boost fuel economy, with the Corsa consuming just 5.0-litres per 100 km over the combined cycle, equating to only 119 g/km CO2 emissions.

State-of-the-art technologies in Opel’s new generation three-cylinder engine include high-pressure direct fuel injection, an ultra-compact turbocharging system and continuously variable valve timing (both intake and exhaust sides). Lightweight, all-aluminium construction, with a cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold, contributes to low weight: the 1.0 ecoFLEX Direct Injection Turbo tips the scales at just 106 kg. The engine is mated to an all-new, compact six-speed manual gearbox.

New Opel Transmission M1X
The new six-speed manual gearbox, developed under the code M1X, is distinguished by its improved efficiency and outstanding shift quality. Opel engineers have achieved greater operating efficiency through optimally-stepped gear ratios and a low-friction design for internal components. Weighing less than 40 kg, this is one of the lightest manual gearboxes on the market.

Driver Assists play leading safety role

The new Corsa not only offers a new driving experience with improved comfort and precision thanks to its new chassis and steering systems – it also makes driving easier and safer with advanced assistance systems. Particularly in hectic city driving conditions, they help the driver in a variety of ways.

At the touch of a button, the standard-fitment City Mode increases power assistance at lower speeds, which is particularly useful when manoeuvring in congested urban areas.

Many of the new Corsa’s driver assistance systems are unrivalled in its class. These include bi-xenon headlamps on selected models with static cornering lights and LED daytime running lights. The static cornering lights are triggered when the indicators are activated or when reverse gear is selected, providing added illumination of corners and obstacles.

Bi-xenon headlamps owith static cornering lights and LED daytime running lights
This impressive system, that so far has only been available in vehicles in higher segments, offers improved lighting range, brightness and colour intensity – a decisive plus for visibility and safety. In addition, it offers lower power consumption and a much longer service life. Forming part of the ‘Sight and Light Pack’, the bi-xenon headlights are mated to an auto-dimming interior mirror, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlight control.

Opel’s new-generation Advanced Park Assist 2 (APA2), available as an option on Enjoy and Cosmo derivatives, identifies suitable parking spaces under 30 km/h and automatically parks the vehicle, without the driver touching the wheel. The ultrasonic sensor-based system, which uses front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera, measures parallel or perpendicular parking spots, calculates the vehicle’s trajectory and automatically steers the Corsa into a space. The driver just controls acceleration, deceleration and gear selection.

APA2 partners with Side Blind Spot Alert, which also uses the ultrasonic sensors to warn the driver of an imminent collision when changing lanes. The sensors have a range of three metres to the left and right of the car, enabling them to detect objects or other vehicles in the driver’s blind spot. Whenever another vehicle comes within range of the sensors, a warning LED illuminates in the relevant exterior door mirror. Impressively, the system is active up to 140 km/h.

New Opel Corsa, Side Blind Spot Alert
All new Corsa models feature a raft of standard safety equipment as well, ensuring nothing is left to chance. These include ABS with EBD and BAS, adaptive brake lights and automatic hazard warning lights, disc brakes all-round, the latest Electronic Stability Programme (ESP Plus), six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system, a pedal release system, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, pretensioned seat belts, a seat belt reminder and an anti-theft alarm and immobiliser.

ESP Plus includes a number of advanced assistance systems:

- Straight Line Stability Control recognises and tendency towards instability under braking and adjusts brake pressure accordingly

- Cornering Brake Control improves stability during cornering by reducing brake pressure of individual wheels

- Drag Torque Control prevents loss of grip due to engine brake torque on slippery roads

- Active Rollover Protection reacts in cases of high speeds and sharp curves, whereby ESP Plus slows the vehicle down to prevent rolling over, for example when a loaded roof carrier is fitted

- Hydraulic Brake Fade Assist automatically raises braking pressure to compensate potential brake fade

- Hill Start Assist prevents downhill movement of the vehicle when pulling off on an uphill slops without using the handbrake

More connectivity and convenience for meaningful innovation

Opel’s award-winning IntelliLink infotainment system, which brings the connected world of smartphones and apps into the car, is available as an option on Enjoy and Essentia models, and standard on Cosmo. IntelliLink is fully compatible with the latest Android and Apple iOS-based smartphones.

IntelliLink has a standard seven-inch colour touchscreen and its home page provides access to five major functions: phone, audio, gallery, settings and apps. Audio streaming via Bluetooth and USB also includes Gracenote music management and identification technology.

New Opel Corsa IntelliLink: BringGo Navigation App
BringGo is IntelliLink’s navigation app. It can be easily downloaded from the phone’s app store and, once downloaded, the map data remains installed on the user’s smartphone, which means Corsa owners do not need an ongoing smartphone broadband connection to use the BringGo navigation system. BringGo solely uses the smartphone’s GPS to locate the Corsa. BringGo also provides functionality for live traffic updates, accident information, Points of Interest (POIs) and Google search.

The Stitcher app is a useful global podcast internet radio service which lets users listen to programmes live, or after they have been broadcast. Once Stitcher is downloaded to the smartphone, Corsa owners can access more than 10 000 podcasts on demand, including radio shows and live stations from around the world, via the Corsa’s IntelliLink touchscreen.
