The Opel Insignia is the master of miserliness in the middle class. Opel officially list a combined consumption of 3.9 to 3.8 liters (104 to 99g CO2/km) depending on the specification for the sedan with the 100 kW/136 hp, 1.6 liter whisper diesel (from €27,945 RRP including VAT in Germany). In Germany, the car is in the A+ efficiency class. However, an independent expert from Switzerland has now proved that this data can be undercut considerably in average central European traffic conditions. Felix Egolf, a former Airbus pilot, is a hypermiler and thus part of a community that is permanently trying to establish new minimal consumption values. During his trip from the Alps to the North Sea and back, he only needed 3.46 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. In total, he drove 2,111 kilometers on a single tank of fuel.

Provisional result: On average, Opel Insignia consumed just 3.2 l/100 km of diesel during the drive from Lucerne to Rüsselsheim, at an average speed of 76 km/h.

Egolf’s tour started in Lucerne on April 6. From there, he travelled to the Opel headquarters in Rüsselsheim via the Black Forest. In Rüsselsheim, he stopped for a chat with Vice President GM Global Propulsion Systems – Europe, Christian Müller. “The fuel gauge in the Insignia still showed that the tank was almost full when Felix Egolf arrived in Rüsselsheim. He managed to complete the first 429 kilometers with an average consumption of only 3.2 liters. It is great that he managed to crack the 2,000-kilometer mark,” said Müller.

Back on the road again: From the Opel HQ in Rüsselsheim, Felix Egolf’s journey in the Opel Insignia continued to the German North Sea coast and back to Switzerland.

The hypermiling tour then took Egolf to Münster, Oldenburg and up to Cuxhaven on the North Sea coast. The return leg saw him pass Hanover, Kassel, St. Gallen before coming to a successful end in Zurich on April 8.

“I have wanted to crack the 2,000 kilometer barrier for some time now but I couldn’t find the car to do it. The excellent aerodynamics of the Opel Insignia (cd value of 0.26 plus small frontal area) combined with the Eco Contact 5 low-rolling resistance tires contributed to this outstanding result. This hypermiling tour with the Opel Insignia also shows that anybody who has an anticipatory driving style can easily equal or better the official consumption figures. Anybody can be a hypermiler,” said Egolf.

On the drive to Cuxhaven, Felix Egolf appreciated the qualities of the Opel Insignia, especially as a comfortable touring sedan. The engine impressed with maximum torque of 320 Newton meters, which is already available in a low and thus fuel-saving rpm range between 2,000 and 2,250 rpm, exemplary smoothness and plenty of power.

The successful models can now be ordered with the new high-tech four-cylinder engines. The 100 kW/136 hp 1.6 CDTI in the Mokka will deliver a lot of driving fun for an entry-level price of euro 24,685. The Insignia sedan will be available with a 125 kW/170 hp two-liter turbo from euro 29,895 (RRP including VAT in Germany). The smooth and refined engines are another important step in the roll-out of Opel’s new powertrain portfolio and set standards in efficiency and environmental friendliness. Their emissions already meet the Euro 6 standards that will be compulsory from September and they are therefore almost as clean as comparable gasoline engines.

Whisper diesel: 1.6 CDTI for Opel Mokka, 2.0 CDTI for flagship Insignia

The Opel Mokka can currently boast the fastest growth on the European car market. The modern chassis and propulsion technologies are obviously key to the success of the sub-compact SUV. The latest development is the new all-aluminum four-cylinder engine, which will replace the 1.7 CDTI. The new high-tech engine gives more power and torque – up six hp and 20 Nm, respectively – from a smaller displacement, as well as significantly lower fuel consumption.

All-New Opel ECOTEC 1.6 CDTI

The lively 1.6 CDTI in the 100 kW/136 hp version reaches 85 hp per liter – unrivalled in its displacement class – and delivers torque of 320 Nm. Acceleration and elasticity figures promise lots of driving fun: the Mokka 1.6 CDTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, and makes the transition from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 9.9 seconds. Maximum speed is 191 km/h. The whisper diesel is also extremely economical and kinder to the environment: with Opel’s precise six-speed manual transmission and standard Start/Stop system, the 1.6 CDTI Mokka consumes just 4.1 l/100 km over the combined cycle while emitting only 109 g/km CO2. This is almost 0.5 l/100 km less fuel and 11 g/km less CO2 than the predecessor 1.7 liter version. The same can also be said for the extremely quiet two-liter turbo diesel in the Insignia. Extracting as much energy from as little fuel as possible is key to both power and frugality, and with an exceptional specific output of 87 hp per liter – a slightly higher power density as Opel’s new-generation 2.0 CDTI – this engine is big on fun-to-drive but small in its impact on customers’ wallets. Impressive torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, and maximum power of 125 kW/170 hp is accessed at just 3,750 rpm. The new powerhouse boasts around four percent more power and 14 percent more torque while maintaining exactly the same consumption as it predecessor and meeting Euro 6 emission standards. The Insignia with the new engine reaches a maximum speed of 225 km/h – an increase of 5 km/h. The sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.0 seconds – almost half a second quicker than its predecessor.

Pure high-tech: For strong performance and small ecological footprint

Two of the main contributors to the strong and environmentally friendly performance of both engines are the VGT (variable geometry turbine) turbocharger and the high-pressure, common-rail fuel injection system. Injectors capable of supplying fuel at 2,000 bar and of up to 10 injection pulses per cylinder cycle ensure high power, improved fuel atomization and efficient mixing with the air intake charge. The VGT in the Insignia features an electrical actuator for the variable aspect turbine, giving a 20 percent faster boost response than a vacuum actuator. Thus guaranteeing even more diesel fun.

Drivers will be able to enjoy the new engines without any regrets because Opel’s new generation whisper diesels deliver outstanding emission levels comparable to those of a gasoline engine. The big diesel weakness, the emission of nitrogen oxides, is history. The 1.6 CDTI in the Mokka uses a Lean NOx Trap (LNT), an exhaust after-treatment system upstream of the diesel particulate filter that captures and removes nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gases without the use of additives.

The Insignia comes with Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which removes nitrogen oxide from the engine’s exhaust gases. Tiny quantities of AdBlue®, a harmless fluid consisting of urea and water, are injected into the exhaust gas flow ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH3), which is absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxide in the passing exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to harmless nitrogen and water vapor in a chemical reaction with the ammonia.

Smooth running: Diesel power with turbine-like refinement

Apart from increasing performance and efficiency, the improvement of running smoothness was a key requirement for the new engines right from the outset of their design. The engineers implemented several measures during construction and fine-tuning to reduce the noise levels and vibrations of the engine thus improving refinement. Architectural improvements focused on two main noise-emitting areas: the top and bottom of the engine and ranged from a decoupled, cam cover on the aluminum cylinder head over a newly designed oil sump to a new balancer shaft module for the two-liter diesel.

Opel ECOTEC 2.0 CDTI: Impressive torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, and maximum power of 125 kW/170 hp is accessed at just 3,750 rpm.

The result: The new 2.0 CDTI can boast reduced noise levels in every rpm range compared to its predecessor and is five decibels quieter when idling.

And the latest generation 1.6 CDTI previously known from the Opel Astra and Meriva MPV has not been nicknamed “whisper diesel” for nothing.

The Mokka is the third most sold car in the Opel rankings behind Corsa and Astra but ahead of Insignia and Zafira.

Currently, the sub-compact SUV segment is the fastest growing in the automobile industry. Compared to last year, registration figures in Europe have almost doubled. Opel Mokka has become a bestseller without regard to national borders. The two-time All-wheel Drive Car of the Year winner leads its segment in Germany with almost 24 percent, in Austria with around 22 percent and in Finland with 27 percent. Throughout Europe, the Mokka achieved a segment share of 15 percent from January to August 2014 and ranks third.

New benchmark in running refinement

Engineers have improved noise generation, vibration and running refinement, the result of a clear focus on quietness and smoothness that characterized the engine’s entire concept, design and development process. State-of-the-art CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) simulations and scores of optimization loops were used to assess the noise characteristics of each component and sub-system even before the first prototype engine was built.

In addition to numerous measures to improve running refinement, engineers also focused on saving weight, using aluminum instead of cast iron for the engine block – a ‘first’ for diesel engine production at Opel. The crankshaft bedplate and cylinder head are also in aluminum, giving a total weight saving of more than 20 kilograms.

General Motors today announced the allocation of the new generation midsize diesel engine family to the GM Manufacturing Poland plant in Tychy.

Start of production of the all-aluminum 1.6 liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel (CDTI) Euro 6 engines  that combine high performance with top refinement and high fuel efficiency is scheduled for 2017.

Total investment in the plant, which is located in the Katowice Special Economic Zone, will amount to 250 million euros. This is the biggest investment in the history of the Tychy plant and includes additional buildings and new manufacturing technology.  The maximum annual production capacity will be 200,000 units.

The investment will enable the extension and modernization of the plant’s infrastructure. The building’s surface area will increase by 30 percent with the addition of the storage area as well as high tech production and testing lines. This expansion takes the plant’s technological competence to the next level and transforms the assembly facility into a full production plant.  Construction and installation of the new production equipment will continue until 2016.

Opel’s new 1.6 CDTI is the quietest diesel in its class

The GM Manufacturing Poland plants in Gliwice and Tychy employ 3,500 people.  The current portfolio includes the Opel Astra, the Cascada convertible and the 1.7 liter turbo-diesel (CDTI) engine .  With today’s announcement, total GM investments in Poland will amount to over 1 billion euros.

Opel’s flexibility champion is now available to order for a sensational entry-level price of 15,990 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany), almost 700 euros less than before. The entry-level Selection variant with the 1.4-liter, 74 kW/100 hp gasoline engine and five-speed manual transmission offers standard features including the FlexSpace seating concept that has been highly praised by the AGR (Campaign for Healthy Backs), electric exterior mirrors and front window lift, electric park brake, adaptive braking lights and many more safety features.

The Opel Meriva has, since its first appearance in 2003, been the star and benchmark amongst the small monocabs. The second generation launched in 2010 has raised the standard with innovative features such as its rear-hinged FlexDoors, its exquisite, flexible seating, relaxed posture on front- and rear seats and many clever storage solutions. All these make the current Meriva the Ergonomics Champion, as has been concluded by independent health experts. Opel now presents the new Meriva – more sophisticated, more efficient and more functional than ever. It will celebrate its world premiere at the Brussels’ Motor Show in mid-January (January 16-26, 2014).

The new Opel Meriva is a consistent continuation of the previous concept enhanced with finer ingredients. It receives a new face that has the characteristics of the new Opel Insignia just revealed at the IAA, with an elegant, generously chromed front grille and sparkling design for the lights. LED technology is now available for the daytime running lights and rear lamps resulting in a crisp, high tech look. It consumes just 4.4 liters per 100 kilometers and emits 116 grams of CO2 per kilometer, 10 per cent less than its 96 kW/130 hp, 1.7 predecessor, while it also boasts much better acceleration and performance. In the course of the year 2014, other 1.6 diesel engines will follow, which will be even more economical and have even lower CO2 emissions.

In addition to the 1.6 diesel, all gasoline engines and the LPG variant in the new Meriva already comply with the future, strict Euro 6 emissions limits. The 1.4 liter gasoline engines (88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp) are now also offered in combination with a reworked low-friction six-speed automatic transmission. As for the five and six-speed manual gearboxes, these have been substantially upgraded and offer more precise shifting, with smooth operation and minimal effort.

The new Meriva also receives a new, state-of-the-art IntelliLink infotainment system with embedded, fast and user-friendly navigation and voice control. The large, high-definition, seven-inch color monitor affords great readability and easy operation. It also displays the image from the rear-view camera. Making calls and audiostreaming via Bluetooth are also possible. The Navi 950 IntelliLink comes standard with comprehensive map information covering the whole of Europe, and further updates can easily be downloaded via USB.

A DETAILED REVIEW

Fresh design with chic features and elegant chrome elements

Opel’s design philosophy – sculptural artistry meets German precision – fits perfectly with a small, highly flexible monocab. The new Meriva benefits from many improvements that give it a more refined appearance. The front fascia now features a new grille with higher chrome content, as well as chrome accents embracing the fog lamps. The grille is framed by the newly-designed front headlights with an eagle eye graphic. For the first time, LED daytime running lights are available. On the side, the new elegant chrome beltline effectively highlights the waved design that accentuates the rear window. This feature and the centrally located door handles mark out the innovative FlexDoors, rear-hinged rear doors which allow for easy entry into the vehicle.

The dynamic and elegant character of the rear gets a new touch of class thanks to LED lights with new, marked high quality graphics. The new Meriva also features newly-designed 17 and 18 inch wheels with premium look and feel. With this, the Meriva remains the only small monocab offering 18-inch wheels which give it a unique stance and presence on the road, placing it a cut above its competitors.

New Euro 6-clean Turbo-Diesel generation with trend-setting technology

The new Meriva boasts the new generation Opel 1.6 CDTI medium-displacement turbo-diesel engine. Developed from scratch, this engine is just making its debut in the Zafira Tourer. In the Meriva, its several variants will progressively replace the 1.3 and 1.7 CDTI power units. The new 1.6 CDTI convinces with strong performance, great fuel economy, and impressive refinement. However, it does not just cater to its passengers but also to the environment. Already today, it complies with the future emissions regulation Euro 6, that will come into force in September 2015.

New Opel ECOTEC 1.6 CDTI EURO 6 Turbo-Diesel engine

Initially, Opel will offer the new Meriva with the 100kW/136hp version of this new generation engine. The all-aluminum power unit with Common-Rail direct injection and Variable Turbine Geometry Turbocharger offers 320 Newtonmeters of maximum torque at 2,000 rpm. This is 6 additional hp and 20 Nm more than the 1.7 CDTI it succeeds, allowing for a substantial improvement in acceleration: The new Meriva swiftly reaches 100 km/h from standstill in just 9.1 seconds, vs. 9.9 seconds previously. However, it also impresses with its values in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions thanks to the lowest frictions of its engine class between1,500 and 2,500 rpm. Consumption and emissions are expected to be of only 4.4 liters per 100 kilometer and 116 grams per kilometer respectively. This is a 10% improvement compared to the previous 96 kW/130 hp 1.7 CDTI (which required 4.9 liter and produced 129 grams). Additional versions of the new generation 1.6 CDTI with even lower fuel consumption and CO2 levels will be introduced in the first half of 2014.

Furthermore, the new generation 1.6 CDTI is top of its class in terms of refinement, thanks to efficient combustion with multiple injection, optimized design of its components and the use of acoustic covers. Whatever the engine speed and load, it stuns with its silence.

Euro 6-confirm gasoline engines and new low-friction transmissions

The new Meriva is also available with a choice of three 1.4 liter gasoline engines. The naturally-aspirated entry-level version produces 74 kW/100 hp. The two turbo-charged variants offer 88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp, and can both be equipped with a newly-evolved, low-friction six-speed automatic transmission with an ActiveSelect function allowing sequential gear selection via the shift lever. This combination of gasoline engine + automatic transmission is a step up from the Meriva’s initial offering and is expected to attract 15 to 20% of all customers. As for the 1.6 CDTI, all gasoline engines in the new Meriva are already compliant with the strict Euro 6 emissions regulation.

The LPG version of the new Meriva is also already Euro 6 compliant. The 88 kW/120 hp, 1.4 Liter Turbo LPG not only reduces CO2 emissions to around 121 grams per kilometer, but also cuts fuel costs by almost half. And LPG is not short of refueling opportunities: It is available at almost 30.000 stations across Europe.

Independent of engine considerations, all new Meriva variants also offer a new level of gear-change comfort, thanks to Opel’s 50 million Euro investment into the optimization of the current five- and six-speed transmissions. Numerous changes to the gearbox components and gear-change mechanisms as well as to their integration into the vehicle have ensured a substantial enhancement. This is especially noticeable with the new Meriva’s manual transmissions: shifting now requires minimal effort and is quicker, softer and more precise.

State-of-the-art IntelliLink infotainment system with embedded navigation

The new Opel Meriva also receives a new generation, state-of-the-art IntelliLink infotainment system enabling seamless smartphone integration into the vehicle. The large, high-definition, seven-inch color monitor offers a new interface with IntelliLink graphics that enhance readability and make operation easy. The system features Bluetooth hand-free phone connectivity and audio streaming, and additional connectivity via USB.

IntelliLink in the new Opel Meriva has a standard CD player and DAB – Digital Audio Broadcast – is offered as an option that raises the bar in terms of radio reception and sound quality. Navigation is embedded into the system, in the Navi 650 and the Navi 950 IntelliLink. It is extremely fast and precise, and destinations can be entered easily via voice recognition using rapid ‘one shot entry’ (request navigation and just speak out the address in a single phrase) as is possible in the Insignia. Map updates can be downloaded via USB. The top of the line Navi 950 IntelliLink contains maps of the whole of Europe. It also reads out messages. In addition to regular voice control over its own functionality, the IntelliLink system in the new Meriva also supports and integrates smartphones’ own voice control – like SIRI for the iPhone for instance.

Opel Meriva interior remains unbeatably ergonomic, practical and flexible

Opel Meriva is the first and only automobile in the world to be able to boast an award for its comprehensive ergonomic concept. In 2010, independent health experts from the AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.), the ‘Campaign for healthy backs’ awarded the Meriva with the sought-after AGR- quality seal for guaranteeing ergonomics and back protection. Their certification was based on the Meriva’s core and exclusive innovations: The FlexSpace seating concept, the FlexDoors system as well as its ergonomic front seats and its unique Flex-Fix integrated bicycle carrier. These continue to make the Meriva the leader in flexibility and ergonomics.

The new Opel Meriva benefits from a re-designed multifunctional FlexRail central console with improved functionality and increased rear passenger legroom in the central seat, thanks to shorter rails. FlexRail offers the fitting storage space necessary for travel utensils with flexible features such as armrests, drink-holders and storage compartments.

An important component of the excellent Meriva-ergonomics concept is the revolutionary patented FlexDoors system with rear-hinged rear doors. Lighter and more aesthetic, they are less intrusive on rear passenger space than sliding doors. They open out at an 84 degree angle (the ‘normal’ angle is 68 degrees) and offer in contrast to conventionally-opening doors extraordinarily comfortable access to the rear of the car: Facilitating, for example, the easy installation of child safety seats on both sides of the rear seat.

The AGR back health experts also praised the Opel Meriva ancillary equipment which make it comfort champion of its class. The FlexSpace Rear-Seating system allows one to convert the interior cabin quickly and simply into a five-, four-, three- and two-seater and offer a unique Lounge Seating function with outstanding shoulder space and legroom to two rear passengers. The FlexFix System further enhances onboard mobility with a bicycle carrier neatly integrated into the tail-end of the Meriva behind the rear bumper. When not needed, the carrier glides back into the rear of the car – in typical, easy Opel style.

In addition, a rear view camera now helps the driver slot into parking spaces by projecting the image onto the 7-inch color monitor in the cockpit. And to complete the Opel Meriva all-round ‘feel-good’ sensation, a heated steering wheel function and a large sunroof for star-spotting are also on offer.
