Opel Crossland X 1.5 Turbo D

With a new addition to the diesel range, Opel now offers the Crossland X for the first time with the strong power and torque of a turbocharged diesel engine combined with the high comfort of a smooth-shifting automatic transmission. The stylish and functional sport utility vehicle (SUV) is thus available with an automatic gearbox on diesel as well as petrol engines. Also making its premiere in the Opel Crossland X is leather trim, which is available as a luxurious option on the Design Line, Innovation and Ultimate equipment versions in combination with ergonomic AGR front seats that are certified by the back specialists from Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.

The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel produces 88 kW/120 hp and maximum torque of 300 Nm at 1750 rpm (fuel consumption[1] [2]: urban 4.4-4.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.8-3.7 l/100 km, combined 4.0 l/100 km, 105-104 g/km CO2). The engine meets the strict Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard thanks to an innovative oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber coupled with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Opel is bringing the new Crossland X 1.5 Turbo Diesel to the market with a six-speed automatic transmission and fuel-saving start/stop as standard.

The cylinder head with integrated air intake manifold and the crankcase of the new 1.5-litre diesel are made of lightweight aluminium, while the four valves per cylinder are activated by dual overhead camshafts. The common rail direct injection system operates at up to 2,000 bar, with fuel entering the combustion chambers through eight-hole injector nozzles.

For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the emissions reduction system – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. The NOx adsorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off. With this innovative technology the new 1.5-litre diesel meets the strict Euro 6d-TEMP standard for NOx.

Prices for the Opel Crossland X Edition with 88 kW/120 hp 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine begin at €24,120 (RRP including VAT in Germany).

Opel’s X-Family of Sport Utility Vehicles Heads Euro 6d-TEMP Initiative

Opel is leading the automotive industry in the implementation of Euro 6d-TEMP, which includes Real Driving Emissions (RDE) measured on public roads. The brand has already introduced 85 newly developed engines that meet the future European emissions standard. At the forefront of this initiative is the Opel X-family of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) comprising Crossland X, Grandland X and Mokka X.


With the transition to Euro 6d-TEMP, Opel Crossland X and the larger Opel Grandland X compact SUV bring a new generation of 1.5 Diesel engines to the Opel powertrain portfolio. Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of lightweight aluminium, while the four valves per cylinder are activated by dual overhead camshafts.

Opel Crossland X offers the 75 kW/102 hp version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engines with Start/Stop. With the manual six-speed transmission, fuel consumption[1] is 4.7 l/100 km urban, 3.5 l/100 km extra-urban, 4.0 l/100 km and 105 g/km CO2 combined. Maximum torque of 250 Nm is developed at only 1,750 rpm.

Opel Grandland X compact SUV features the 96 kW/130 hp variant of the 1.5 Diesel, with start/stop and a VGT turbocharger (Variable Geometry Turbine vanes). With a six-speed manual transmission, fuel consumption[1] is 4.7-4.7 urban l/100 km, 3.9-3.8 extra-urban l/100 km, 4.2-4.1 l/100 km and 110-108 g/km CO2 combined. Maximum torque of 300 Nm at developed at only 1,750 rpm.

Opel Grandland X 1.5 Turbo D is also available with an advanced eight-speed automatic transmission that not only offers seamless shifting, but also moderate fuel consumption and emissions[1] (4.5-4.4 urban l/100 km, 4.0-3.9 extra-urban l/100 km, 4.2-4.1 l/100 km and 109-108 g/km CO2 combined).



For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the emissions reduction system of the 1.5 Turbo Diesel – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber, AdBlue injector, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. The NOx adsorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off.



Thanks to the new 1.5-litre power unit and the existing 130 kW/177 hp 2.0 Diesel (fuel consumption urban 5.3-5.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.6-4.5 l/100 km, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km and 128-126 g/km CO2 combined), which shares the emissions reduction system of the 1.5 engine, Grandland X customers can choose from two powerful, yet very fuel efficient diesels.

The entry level version of the Opel Grandland X comes with the 96 kW/130 hp 1.2-litre Direct Injection Turbo PureTech petrol unit. The three-cylinder engine, which has won the International Engine of the Year award four times in a row, features a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) and is available with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. The SUV challenger can achieve a top speed of 188 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.1 seconds (fuel consumption manual[1]: 6.1 l/100 km urban, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.3-5.2 l/100 km and 121-120 g/km CO2 combined; fuel consumption automatic[1]: 6.1-6.0 l/100 km urban, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.3-5.2 l/100 km and 121-119 g/km CO2 combined).

Opel Mokka X: All-turbo engine range starts with 120 hp 1.4 Turbo

For the Opel Mokka X, the transition to Euro 6d-TEMP brings a new, stronger, entry-level petrol power unit, meaning that the bestselling B-segment SUV is now powered exclusively by turbocharged engines. The 88 kW/120 hp 1.4 Turbo with start/stop (fuel consumption[1] urban 8.1-8.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.7-5.5 l/100 km, combined 6.6-6.4 l/100 km, 151-148 g/km CO2) drives the front wheels via a manual six-speed transmission and replaces the 85 kW/115 hp 1.6-litre, naturally aspirated predecessor.



Opel’s Euro 6d-TEMP rollout is part of the brand’s commitment to becoming a leader in the reduction of vehicle emissions. The next steps in the journey are the introduction of four electrified models by 2020, including the next generation Corsa, which will also be available as a fully electric vehicle, and the Opel Grandland X plug-in hybrid. By 2024 Opel will become a fully electrified passenger car brand, offering an electric version of every model – as a hybrid or a battery electric vehicle – alongside those powered by internal combustion engines.

WLTP driving cycle: More realistic fuel consumption data

The Euro 6d-TEMP initiative from Opel coincides with the introduction of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) for measuring fuel consumption and emissions, which applies to all new car registrations as of this September.

Like the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the WLTP is a laboratory test, but while the NEDC determines “urban, extra-urban and combined” values based on a theoretical driving profile, the WLTP uses “real” driving profiles drawn from a global statistical survey. The WLTP driving cycle is divided into four parts with different average speeds: low, medium, high and extra high. Each part contains a variety of driving phases, stops, acceleration and braking that represent everyday driving profiles.

Each engine/transmission combination of a certain vehicle type is tested with the most economical as well as the most fuel-intensive vehicle equipment. The data obtained is comparable worldwide, while NEDC values are only valid for Europe.

Real Driving Emissions: Measurements on the road as well as in the laboratory

When the transition to WLTP began in September 2017, the Euro 6c emissions standard also became a legal requirement for the type-approval of new vehicle types. Types that meet the standard by passing the Real Driving Emissions test (RDE) are type approved according to Euro 6d-TEMP. RDE complements the WLTP and measures the pollutants from cars while driven on public roads, Euro 6c becomes a legal requirement for all newly registered vehicles this September, while Euro 6d-TEMP will apply to all new registrations as of September 2019.

Euro 6d-TEMP has a NOx conformity factor of 2.1, which is the maximum margin of error by which cars are allowed to exceed the NOx limit in real world driving – measured in the RDE test. Euro 6d-TEMP will be superseded by Euro 6d with a NOx conformity factor of 1 (plus an error-margin of 0.5) in January 2020 for new types and from January 2021 for new registrations.

Opel Grandland X Debut for New 1.5 Litre Turbo Diesel Engine

Opel Grandland X compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is bringing a new advanced diesel engine to the brand’s powertrain portfolio. The new 1.5 litre, four cylinder, turbocharged diesel making its debut in the Opel Grandland X is more powerful and more economical than the engine it replaces. The new powertrain is designed to meet strict future emissions requirements thanks to an innovative oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber coupled with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

Opel is bringing the new 96 kW/130 hp diesel to the market in the Grandland X with a six-speed manual transmission (fuel consumption[1] urban 4.7-4.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.9-3.8 l/100 km, combined 4.2-4.1 l/100 km, 110-108 g/km CO2). Maximum torque is 300 Nm at 1750 rpm. The new engine is equipped with fuel-saving Start/Stop.

In comparison to its predecessor, the 88 kW/120 hp 1.6 litre diesel with six-speed manual transmission (NEDC diesel consumption urban 4.9-4.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.9-3.5 l/100 km, combined 4.3-4.0 l/100 km, 111-104 g/km CO2), the new 130 hp 1.5 litre engine in the Opel Grandland X delivers fuel economy improved by up to four percent. This has been achieved through the reduction in displacement and friction, the optimized combustion system with patented piston geometry and the increased exhaust gas recirculation (enabled by a high-efficiency heat exchanger).

Eight-speed automatic for higher comfort and excellent fuel economy

The new engine is also available with an advanced new eight-speed automatic transmission that not only offers seamless shifting, but thanks to its low friction design also further reduces fuel consumption and emissions (fuel consumption[2] urban 4.5-4.4 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.0-3.9 l/100 km, combined 4.2-4.1 l/100 km, 109-108 g/km CO2).

With the new 1.5 litre power unit and the newly introduced 130 kW/177 hp 2.0 litre Turbo Diesel engine (fuel consumption[3] urban 5.3-5.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.6-4.5 l/100 km, combined 4.9-4.8 l/100 km, 128-126 g/km CO2) Opel  Grandland X customers can now choose from two powerful, yet very fuel efficient climate-friendly and pro-environmental diesels, which both comply with the strict Euro 6d-temp standard that will become mandatory for newly registered cars in September 2019. 



Therefore, they are not affected by potential urban diesel bans. By 2020, Opel will also offer the Grandland X as the brand’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

!NEW! Ready: New Generation Whisper Diesels for Opel Mokka and Opel Insignia

New generation Diesel: Opel Insignia and Mokka SUV now with more power and torque combined with outstanding consumption and noise levels.
Extremely quiet, high power, high torque all combined with low consumption and emissions – these are the key elements of the new generation Opel diesels for Mokka and Insignia. The successful models can now be ordered with the new high-tech four-cylinder engines. The 100 kW/136 hp 1.6 CDTI in the Mokka will deliver a lot of driving fun for an entry-level price of euro 24,685. The Insignia sedan will be available with a 125 kW/170 hp two-liter turbo from euro 29,895 (RRP including VAT in Germany). The smooth and refined engines are another important step in the roll-out of Opel’s new powertrain portfolio and set standards in efficiency and environmental friendliness. Their emissions already meet the Euro 6 standards that will be compulsory from September and they are therefore almost as clean as comparable gasoline engines.

Whisper diesel: 1.6 CDTI for Opel Mokka, 2.0 CDTI for flagship Insignia

The Opel Mokka can currently boast the fastest growth on the European car market. The modern chassis and propulsion technologies are obviously key to the success of the sub-compact SUV. The latest development is the new all-aluminum four-cylinder engine, which will replace the 1.7 CDTI. The new high-tech engine gives more power and torque – up six hp and 20 Nm, respectively – from a smaller displacement, as well as significantly lower fuel consumption.

All-New Opel ECOTEC 1.6 CDTI

The lively 1.6 CDTI in the 100 kW/136 hp version reaches 85 hp per liter – unrivalled in its displacement class – and delivers torque of 320 Nm. Acceleration and elasticity figures promise lots of driving fun: the Mokka 1.6 CDTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, and makes the transition from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 9.9 seconds. Maximum speed is 191 km/h. The whisper diesel is also extremely economical and kinder to the environment: with Opel’s precise six-speed manual transmission and standard Start/Stop system, the 1.6 CDTI Mokka consumes just 4.1 l/100 km over the combined cycle while emitting only 109 g/km CO2. This is almost 0.5 l/100 km less fuel and 11 g/km less CO2 than the predecessor 1.7 liter version. This new diesel engine complies with the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard, making it almost as clean as a comparable gasoline unit.

The same can also be said for the extremely quiet two-liter turbo diesel in the Insignia. Extracting as much energy from as little fuel as possible is key to both power and frugality, and with an exceptional specific output of 87 hp per liter – a slightly higher power density as Opel’s new-generation 2.0 CDTI – this engine is big on fun-to-drive but small in its impact on customers’ wallets. Impressive torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, and maximum power of 125 kW/170 hp is accessed at just 3,750 rpm. The new powerhouse boasts around four percent more power and 14 percent more torque while maintaining exactly the same consumption as it predecessor and meeting Euro 6 emission standards. The Insignia with the new engine reaches a maximum speed of 225 km/h – an increase of 5 km/h. The sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.0 seconds – almost half a second quicker than its predecessor.

Powerplant: 2.0 CDTI with 125 kW/170 hp and 400 Nm for Opel Insignia

Pure high-tech: For strong performance and small ecological footprint

Two of the main contributors to the strong and environmentally friendly performance of both engines are the VGT (variable geometry turbine) turbocharger and the high-pressure, common-rail fuel injection system. Injectors capable of supplying fuel at 2,000 bar and of up to 10 injection pulses per cylinder cycle ensure high power, improved fuel atomization and efficient mixing with the air intake charge. The VGT in the Insignia features an electrical actuator for the variable aspect turbine, giving a 20 percent faster boost response than a vacuum actuator. Thus guaranteeing even more diesel fun.

Drivers will be able to enjoy the new engines without any regrets because Opel’s new generation whisper diesels deliver outstanding emission levels comparable to those of a gasoline engine. The big diesel weakness, the emission of nitrogen oxides, is history. The 1.6 CDTI in the Mokka uses a Lean NOx Trap (LNT), an exhaust after-treatment system upstream of the diesel particulate filter that captures and removes nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gases without the use of additives.

The Insignia comes with Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which removes nitrogen oxide from the engine’s exhaust gases. Tiny quantities of AdBlue®, a harmless fluid consisting of urea and water, are injected into the exhaust gas flow ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH3), which is absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxide in the passing exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to harmless nitrogen and water vapor in a chemical reaction with the ammonia.

Smooth running: Diesel power with turbine-like refinement

Apart from increasing performance and efficiency, the improvement of running smoothness was a key requirement for the new engines right from the outset of their design. The engineers implemented several measures during construction and fine-tuning to reduce the noise levels and vibrations of the engine thus improving refinement. Architectural improvements focused on two main noise-emitting areas: the top and bottom of the engine and ranged from a decoupled, cam cover on the aluminum cylinder head over a newly designed oil sump to a new balancer shaft module for the two-liter diesel.

The result: The new 2.0 CDTI can boast reduced noise levels in every rpm range compared to its predecessor and is five decibels quieter when idling.

And the latest generation 1.6 CDTI previously known from the Opel Astra and Meriva MPV has not been nicknamed “whisper diesel” for nothing.

The all-new 1.6 CDTI Opel Mokka is available with front-wheel drive and six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The all-wheel drive (AWD) comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. Opel Insignia sedan, liftback and Sports Tourer with the new two-liter turbo diesel are available with a six-speed gearbox and front or four-wheel drive.

ALL-NEW Opel 2.0 CDTI: New Generation Large Diesel Debuts in Paris

High power, high torque, low fuel economy and emissions, all delivered with class-leading refinement: Opel’s new-generation, 2.0 liter Turbo diesel ticks every important box. Making its debut in the Insignia and Zafira Tourer MPV at “Mondial de l’Automobile 2014” in Paris (October 4 - 19), this state-of-the-art engine is another major step in the roll-out of Opel’s new powertrain portfolio.

Available next year, the new 2.0 CDTI is the first in a new family of large diesel engines developed in-house by a global team of engineers in Turin and Rüsselsheim supported by engineers in North America. It will be manufactured at Opel’s Kaiserslautern engine plant in Germany.

Power density up: Fuel costs and emissions down

Key elements in the performance of the engine are the newly-designed combustion chamber, the re-profiled intake ports and the new fuel injection system with 2,000 bar and up to 10 injections per cylinder cycle. This ensures high power, improved fuel atomization and also contributes to quieter running. The definition of the combustion chamber alone was the subject of more than 80 computer design simulations, before the best five were finally selected for hardware development.

The VGT (variable geometry turbocharger) features an electrical actuator for the variable aspect turbine, giving a 20 percent faster boost response than a vacuum actuator. Exceptionally compact packaging of the VGT and intercooler also minimizes the air volume between the turbocharger and engine, further contributing to a fast boost pressure build up. For durability, the turbocharger is water-cooled and has an oil filter fitted at the oil inlet point to help further reduce wear in the bearing system.

The VGT and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) module have been designed as a single system for optimal efficiency. The EGR module is based around a new stainless steel radiator concept which provides a near 90 percent cooling efficiency. An integrated, water-cooled EGR bypass valve minimizes pressure drop and its closed loop control offers a significant improvement in NOx/PM trade-off under transient driving conditions, while improving the management of HC and CO emissions.

Smooth running: Diesel power with turbine-like refinement

A consistent improvement in NVH characteristics under all operating conditions was a key requirement for the new engine right from the outset of its design. Several CAE acoustic optimization loops were executed on each component and sub-system even before the first prototype engines were built.

Architectural improvements focused on two high noise emitting areas: the top and bottom of the engine. A new aluminum cylinder head design, including the addition of a decoupled, plastic cam cover with isolated fixings and a sealing gasket, improves noise attenuation. And the intake manifold is also wrapped in a single shell cover made of sound-absorbing material.

At the bottom of the engine, a new balancer shaft module is fitted, made of high pressure die-cast aluminum. It houses two counter-rotating shafts which offset up to 83 percent of secondary order engine vibrations. A helical gear on the crankshaft drives one of the balancer shafts, which is geared to drive the other shaft. Scissor gear control ensures smooth gear teeth meshing, and the elimination of a drive chain removes the risk of rattle noise. After detailed analysis, plain instead of roller bearings were preferred for the balancer shafts to further reduce NVH, as well as weight.

The design of the oil pan is also new. The previous single piece solution is now replaced by a two piece design, with a lower sheet metal pan fixed to an upper section in high pressure, die-cast aluminum. NVH performance was further improved by several analysis loops to acoustically optimize the internal and external ribs of both sections.

Other detailed sound engineering measures to reduce operating noise include:

optimized fuel injection patterns for reduced combustion noise without compromising fuel economy; acoustically-designed ribs in the cast iron cylinder block; individual balancing of the VGT compressor and turbine wheels; improved teeth-meshing on the timing belt and decoupled mounting points for its cover.

As a result of all these design features, the new engine emits less noise than its predecessor throughout its operating range, and is five decibels quieter at idle.

Clean running with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

The new 2.0 CDTI runs as clean as a gasoline engine with Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which assures compliance with Euro 6 emissions standards. 

BlueInjection is an after-treatment which removes nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the engine’s exhaust gases. Tiny quantities of AdBlue®, a harmless fluid consisting of urea and water, are injected into the exhaust gas flow ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH3), which is absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the passing exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to harmless nitrogen and water vapor in a chemical reaction with the ammonia.

The AdBlue solution, available at filling stations and Opel dealerships, is stored in a tank, which can be topped up as required via a nozzle adjacent to the vehicle’s fuel filler cap.
