Thanks to excellent aerodynamics as well as highly efficient new engines and transmissions, the new Opel Astra sets standards for efficiency and low emissions. Compared with the previous model, CO2 has been cut by up to 19 percent, putting the Astra at the top of the compact class. Current Astra generation already ushered in a new era at its premiere and was elected European Car Of The Year 2016. With its lightweight design (200 kg lighter than the predecessor) and top technologies from higher classes, the Astra set benchmarks. Opel continues to pursue this strategy with ultra-modern new generations of highly efficient and lightweight petrol and diesel engines. The 1.2-1.5-litre three-cylinder power units produce 77 kW (105 hp) to 107 kW (145hp), making both the Astra five-door and Sports Tourer real fuel-saving and CO2 champions (NEDC fuel consumption: urban 6.1-4.5 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.0-3.1 l/100 km, combined 4.8-3.6 l/100 km, 115-96 g/km CO2; WLTP combined: 5.9-4.4, 139-117 g/km CO2; preliminary figures). A counter-rotating balance shaft in the block of the three-cylinder engines offsets vibrations. Base power units already have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. A smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic is optional.

Meticulous development in the wind tunnel also made a significant contribution to the reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. As a result, the new Astra is one of the most aerodynamic compact cars on the market.

Aero-benchmarks have been achieved through numerous measures, including an engine compartment cover, deflector-shaped rear axle control arms and a full-face shutter. The upper and lower portions of the new Astra’s radiator grille automatically open and close independently of one another, further improving the frontal airflow. The underbody optimisation improves the drag coefficient by reducing turbulence.

Astra’s dynamic chassis has been further developed. New shock absorbers increase comfort. The optional sports chassis features stiffer dampers, a more direct steering and a Watts link at the rear axle.

“We focussed on reducing fuel consumption and emissions during the development of the new Astra”, said Christian Müller, Managing Director Engineering. “Thanks to the excellent aerodynamics as well as new-generation engines and transmissions, we reduced CO2 emissions by up to 19 percent. That is a huge step to the benefit of our customers, who can also profit from lower running costs. This all puts the new Astra at the top of its class.”

Thanks to state-of-the-art emissions reduction technologies such as Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) and diesel Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), all the Astra’s new powertrains already meet Euro 6d. The strict emissions standard first comes into force for all new registrations in 2021. The all-aluminium diesel and petrol engines are equipped as standard with fuel-saving stop/start technology.

But the new Opel Astra, which can already be ordered in a few weeks, not only boasts exemplary aerodynamics and engine technology. It also comes with many other top technologies, from the new front and rear view camera to the digital speedometer and the next generation of infotainment. The E-Call emergency call system is also on board. A wireless charger in the centre console for smartphones is optionally available.

Efficiency champions: Up to 19 percent lower CO2 emissions

Low consumption and CO2 figures are also enabled by the modern six-speed manual gearboxes, the seven-speed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and new nine-speed automatic.

New turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, which are as economical as they are lively, are primarily responsible for the exemplary efficiency. New Opel Astra: 9-Speed-AT HydraMatic

Compact, three-cylinder, turbo petrol units are available with 1.2 and 1.4 litre displacements. With power outputs extending from 81 kW (110 hp) to 107 kW (145 hp) and maximum torque from 195 to 236 Newton metres, they achieve an excellent balance between performance and efficiency (NEDC fuel consumption: urban 6.1-5.4 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.0-3.8 l/100 km, combined 4.8-4.4 l/100 km, 110-101 g/km CO2; WLTP2 combined: 5.9-5.2, 136-120 g/km CO2; preliminary figures). Astra 1.2 is combined with a smooth-shifting six-speed manual gearbox while the Astra 1.4 is available exclusively with a new seven-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT). With the CVT, Astra drivers can enjoy the convenience of automatic gear changing or select gears themselves via the shift lever.

Integration of the water-cooled exhaust manifold in the cylinder head contributes to quick engine warm-up, which lowers emissions after a cold start.

Compared to the previous model, the fuel consumption and CO2 figures of the 77 kW (105 hp) and 90 kW (122 hp) Astra diesels have been reduced by up to 17 percent and around 10 percent respectively.

Instead of the precise, six-speed manual gearbox, the most powerful diesel is optionally available with the seamless shifting of a new nine-speed automatic transmission, which is making its debut at Opel in the Astra.

The diesel engines feature an electrically-activated turbocharger with variable geometry turbine vanes (VGT) and, similar to their petrol counterparts, a balance shaft in the block for additional refinement. Likewise, the exhaust manifold is also integrated in the cylinder head.

Optimum exhaust after-treatment of the Astra 1.5 diesel is delivered by the emissions reduction system consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Opel Astra already offers a portfolio of state-of-the-art technologies and assistance systems that is unrivalled in this vehicle class – first and foremost the intelligent, glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix light. The extensive offer also includes systems such as adaptive cruise control, following distance indication, forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and lane keep assist, to name but a few. Also available are AGR-certified (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.) ergonomic seats with ventilation and massage function. New Opel Astra is also highly digitalised with a new optional high-tech front camera as well as rear view camera.

New front camera is smaller, but more powerful than before thanks to a faster processor. It now not only recognises vehicles, but also pedestrians – an important safety bonus. Furthermore, thanks to the high-resolution camera, traffic sign recognition can now process even more traffic signs and show them as symbols on the display. Digital rear view camera available in conjunction with the new Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment system is also more powerful. View of the traffic behind the vehicle on the monitor is more distinct and precise; the contrasts are more visible in the dark.

Opel Astra customers enjoy top connectivity with the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible systems Multimedia Radio, Multimedia Navi and Multimedia Navi Pro. They belong to the newest infotainment generation – smarter, faster and more intuitive. Top-of-the-line Multimedia Navi Pro – as in the Opel Insignia flagship – has an eight-inch colour touchscreen and can also be operated by voice control. Connected Navigation services with real-time traffic information and online map updates make the journey more relaxed. The navigation display itself appears with redesigned symbols in a fresher, more modern look. The same applies to the instrument cluster: drivers in the new Opel Astra are the first to have a digital speedometer.

Optionally available is the E-Call emergency call function. If needed, help is just seconds away by pressing the red button. If the seatbelt tensioners or airbags are deployed, the system automatically makes an emergency call.

Driving pleasure: Wireless charging and Bose sound system

Comfort is a top priority in the new Astra. A practical feature when travelling: compatible smartphones can now also be charged inductively via wireless charging. All you have to do is insert your smartphone into the opening provided in the centre console – a flat battery is a thing of the past.

The new Astra transforms into a concert hall with the optional Bose high-end sound system. A total of seven loudspeakers including a RichBass subwoofer under the boot ensure optimum listening pleasure. The driver and passengers are surrounded by a rich sound – regardless of where they are in the vehicle. In addition, up to eight different sound profiles can be stored via the digital amplifier – depending on the taste and preference of the music lover.

Last but not least, the new Astra introduces another comfort feature that makes driving in the cold season more pleasant and safer: the heated windscreen. Fine, almost invisible wires in the windscreen ensure that Astra drivers quickly have a clear view of the road on frosty days and that the windscreen no longer fogs up.

Dream Team: New Top BiTurbo Diesel Engine for Opel Insignia Flagship

Dream team: The new top-of-the-line 2.0-liter diesel engine for the Opel Insignia BiTurbo always comes with all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmission.

Production-start for the new top-of-the-line engine and the Opel Insignia Country Tourer from Opel: With the summer slowly drawing to an end, the first 2.0 liter BiTurbo diesel engines will roll off the production line. They are tailored for the Country Tourer along with all other variants of Opel’s flagship. With the Grand Sport, Sports Tourer and Country Tourer the second generation Insignia can be ordered with the new top-of-the-range diesel this year. The Country Tourer appeals to all Insignia fans looking for stylish and practical station wagon with off-road looks. The newcomer will celebrate its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (September 14-24).


The newly designed 2.0-liter diesel engine produces 154 kW/210 hp at 4,000 rpm and develops strong torque of 480 Nm from only 1,500 rpm thanks to sequential two-stage turbocharging (Official fuel consumption Grand Sport 2.0 BiTurbo in accordance with New European Driving Cycle: urban 8.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.7 l/100 km, combined 6.9 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 183 g/km). The new Insignia BiTurbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds with a maximum speed of 233 km/h.


Such strength must be transferred to the road intelligently, which is why the top-of-the-line engine always comes in combination with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and high-tech all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. In addition to the power output, the drivability (turbo power in every situation) and the refinement of the new common rail engine are also further improved compared with the existing extremely popular 2.0 liter unit with single turbocharger (125 kW/170 PS; official fuel consumption Grand Sport with front-wheel drive in accordance with NEDC urban 6.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.3 l/100 km, combined 5.2 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 136 g/km).

In addition to the legally required NEDC Data, Opel also determined values in accordance with the Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) which are officially required as of this autumn for the newly developed four-cylinder BiTurbo. The WLTP values (Insignia Grand Sport 2.0 BiTurbo WLTP fuel consumption range 12.2-6.2[1] l/100 km, combined 8.0-7.5 l/100 km, 209-196 g/km CO2) are much more realistic than the hitherto officially applicable NEDC figures (Official fuel consumption Grand Sport 2.0 BiTurbo in accordance with NEDC urban 8.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.7 l/100 km, combined 6.9 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 183 g/km). The WLTP figures also take different driving styles into consideration, which enables customers to get a better estimate of their own fuel consumption[2]. An overview of the more realistic consumption figures in accordance with the WLTP cycle can be found on opel.de.

Like the existing 125 kW/170 hp 2.0 liter engine with single turbocharger, the new top-of-the-line diesel also features highly effective Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust after-treatment technology with AdBlue injection, which removes nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the engine’s exhaust gases. The watery urea solution which contains ammonia (NH3) reacts with the nitrogen oxides in the SCR catalytic converter and creates harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

New top-of-the-line diesel with sequential two-stage turbocharging

Opel has pulled out all the stops for maximum fuel efficiency and maximum fun-to-drive. The new diesel features two turbochargers functioning sequentially. The intake air enters the first turbocharger where it is compressed and passed to the second turbo. This is driven by Variable Geometry Turbine vanes in the exhaust gas, which increase torque at low engine speeds and raise power at higher engine speeds. VGT then adjusts the vanes to parallel with the gas flow, thus reducing back pressure and lowering fuel consumption. The now highly compressed and very hot intake air then passes through an intercooler on the way to the combustion chambers. Diesel fuel is then injected through seven-hole jets in up to ten sequences at 2000 bar. The boost-pressure is controlled, according to engine-speed and load, by three bypass valves and an electrically actuated variable turbine geometry.

Apart from increased efficiency, higher power output and torque, refinement and noise attenuation were priorities in the design of the new engine. The Opel engineers therefore gave the engine a cast-iron crankshaft, balance shafts, a stiffened flywheel and a two-piece oil sump, in order to reduce diesel-typical vibrations and acoustics to a minimum. In order to further lower fuel consumption, the water pump is only switched on when temperatures require it. Just like the well-known 2.0 liter diesel, the new BiTurbo diesel is built in Opel’s Kaiserslautern plant.

A 2.0 liter BiTurbo diesel with 143 kW/195 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm already made its debut in the first-generation Insignia in 2012, and was then offered in the Astra, Cascada, GTC and Zafira Tourer. 

The new 154 kW/210 hp and 480 Nm engine for the Insignia fits perfectly into the range of current Opel power units with two-stage turbocharging.




Opel Astra, the European Car of the Year 2016, is available as hatchback and Sports Tourer with a 118 kW/160 hp 1.6 BiTurbo. The four-cylinder engine develops maximum torque of 350 Nm at only 1,500 rpm (Official fuel consumption Astra hatchback in accordance with NEDC, urban 5.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.4 l/100 km, combined 4.0 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 106 g/km CO2). The fastest Astra diesel thus accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 220 km/h.

!NEW! Ready: New Generation Whisper Diesels for Opel Mokka and Opel Insignia

New generation Diesel: Opel Insignia and Mokka SUV now with more power and torque combined with outstanding consumption and noise levels.
Extremely quiet, high power, high torque all combined with low consumption and emissions – these are the key elements of the new generation Opel diesels for Mokka and Insignia. The successful models can now be ordered with the new high-tech four-cylinder engines. The 100 kW/136 hp 1.6 CDTI in the Mokka will deliver a lot of driving fun for an entry-level price of euro 24,685. The Insignia sedan will be available with a 125 kW/170 hp two-liter turbo from euro 29,895 (RRP including VAT in Germany). The smooth and refined engines are another important step in the roll-out of Opel’s new powertrain portfolio and set standards in efficiency and environmental friendliness. Their emissions already meet the Euro 6 standards that will be compulsory from September and they are therefore almost as clean as comparable gasoline engines.

Whisper diesel: 1.6 CDTI for Opel Mokka, 2.0 CDTI for flagship Insignia

The Opel Mokka can currently boast the fastest growth on the European car market. The modern chassis and propulsion technologies are obviously key to the success of the sub-compact SUV. The latest development is the new all-aluminum four-cylinder engine, which will replace the 1.7 CDTI. The new high-tech engine gives more power and torque – up six hp and 20 Nm, respectively – from a smaller displacement, as well as significantly lower fuel consumption.

All-New Opel ECOTEC 1.6 CDTI

The lively 1.6 CDTI in the 100 kW/136 hp version reaches 85 hp per liter – unrivalled in its displacement class – and delivers torque of 320 Nm. Acceleration and elasticity figures promise lots of driving fun: the Mokka 1.6 CDTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, and makes the transition from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 9.9 seconds. Maximum speed is 191 km/h. The whisper diesel is also extremely economical and kinder to the environment: with Opel’s precise six-speed manual transmission and standard Start/Stop system, the 1.6 CDTI Mokka consumes just 4.1 l/100 km over the combined cycle while emitting only 109 g/km CO2. This is almost 0.5 l/100 km less fuel and 11 g/km less CO2 than the predecessor 1.7 liter version. This new diesel engine complies with the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard, making it almost as clean as a comparable gasoline unit.

The same can also be said for the extremely quiet two-liter turbo diesel in the Insignia. Extracting as much energy from as little fuel as possible is key to both power and frugality, and with an exceptional specific output of 87 hp per liter – a slightly higher power density as Opel’s new-generation 2.0 CDTI – this engine is big on fun-to-drive but small in its impact on customers’ wallets. Impressive torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, and maximum power of 125 kW/170 hp is accessed at just 3,750 rpm. The new powerhouse boasts around four percent more power and 14 percent more torque while maintaining exactly the same consumption as it predecessor and meeting Euro 6 emission standards. The Insignia with the new engine reaches a maximum speed of 225 km/h – an increase of 5 km/h. The sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.0 seconds – almost half a second quicker than its predecessor.

Pure high-tech: For strong performance and small ecological footprint

Two of the main contributors to the strong and environmentally friendly performance of both engines are the VGT (variable geometry turbine) turbocharger and the high-pressure, common-rail fuel injection system. Injectors capable of supplying fuel at 2,000 bar and of up to 10 injection pulses per cylinder cycle ensure high power, improved fuel atomization and efficient mixing with the air intake charge. The VGT in the Insignia features an electrical actuator for the variable aspect turbine, giving a 20 percent faster boost response than a vacuum actuator. Thus guaranteeing even more diesel fun.

Drivers will be able to enjoy the new engines without any regrets because Opel’s new generation whisper diesels deliver outstanding emission levels comparable to those of a gasoline engine. The big diesel weakness, the emission of nitrogen oxides, is history. The 1.6 CDTI in the Mokka uses a Lean NOx Trap (LNT), an exhaust after-treatment system upstream of the diesel particulate filter that captures and removes nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gases without the use of additives.

The Insignia comes with Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which removes nitrogen oxide from the engine’s exhaust gases. Tiny quantities of AdBlue®, a harmless fluid consisting of urea and water, are injected into the exhaust gas flow ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH3), which is absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxide in the passing exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to harmless nitrogen and water vapor in a chemical reaction with the ammonia.

Smooth running: Diesel power with turbine-like refinement

Apart from increasing performance and efficiency, the improvement of running smoothness was a key requirement for the new engines right from the outset of their design. The engineers implemented several measures during construction and fine-tuning to reduce the noise levels and vibrations of the engine thus improving refinement. Architectural improvements focused on two main noise-emitting areas: the top and bottom of the engine and ranged from a decoupled, cam cover on the aluminum cylinder head over a newly designed oil sump to a new balancer shaft module for the two-liter diesel.

The result: The new 2.0 CDTI can boast reduced noise levels in every rpm range compared to its predecessor and is five decibels quieter when idling.

And the latest generation 1.6 CDTI previously known from the Opel Astra and Meriva MPV has not been nicknamed “whisper diesel” for nothing.

Opel Insignia sedan, liftback and Sports Tourer with the new two-liter turbo diesel are available with a six-speed gearbox and front or four-wheel drive.
