New Opel Insignia Grand Sport and Sports Tourer with more dynamic appearance

Opel gives a first glimpse of the new Insignia. New edition of the German brand’s flagship will premiere at the Brussels Motor Show from January 10-19, 2020 and offer buyers even sharper looks as well as further improved night-time vision. Thanks to the refreshed design, the top-of-the-line-model has an even more powerful on-the-road presence. Extremely slim headlamps with pioneering LED technology make a major contribution. New adaptive IntelliLux LED Pixel Light now features 84 LED elements per headlamp. Headlamps react faster, with more precision than ever before, providing optimum vision for Insignia drivers without glare for oncoming or preceding traffic. With the new-generation IntelliLux LED Pixel Light, Opel flagship is unique in its market segment.

New Opel Insignia Grand Sport

New edition of the Opel Insignia is packed with advanced technologies. Grand Sport limousine and Sports Tourer estate offer for the first time a digital rear view camera. Combined with radar-based rear cross traffic alert, which warns of traffic approaching from the side, the system further increases safety. Portfolio is completed by numerous proven assistance systems such as forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection and a head-up display. Insignia drivers and passengers are well connected by the offer of excellent infotainment systems with colour touchscreens. List of options includes e-Call and wireless charging for compatible smartphones in the centre console.

New Opel Insignia will be even more efficient than before, thanks to lightweight engineering and all-new, highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. On its introduction in 2009, the first generation was elected “European Car Of The Year”. During the last ten years, almost 1.2 million units of both Insignia generations have rolled off the assembly line in Opel’s hometown of Rüsselsheim.

Precise next-generation IntelliLux LED Pixel Light: 168 LED elements

New Opel Insignia will be equipped exclusively with Full LED light systems. From highly energy-efficient LED headlamps to the new adaptive IntelliLux LED Pixel Light, which features an industry-leading total of 168 LED elements, instead of the previous 32.

New Opel Insignia: IntelliLux LED Pixel Light

“With IntelliLux LED Pixel Light, we take another big step forward”, explained Christian Müller, Managing Director Engineering. “Driving at night is therefore more relaxed and safer. New headlamps react faster, imperceptibly and with higher precision to the prevailing driving conditions. Intelligent system continuously adapts the light beam, road ahead is always ideally lit. Result is optimum vision in every situation, without glare for other road users.”

New Opel Insignia: Glare-Free High Beam

Main beam is adjusted seamlessly in milliseconds by two control units – one connected to the front camera and the other in the headlamp. High number of continuously reacting LED elements results in a seamless adaptation of the light beam. Illuminated area is larger than before, approaching or preceding traffic is “cut out” more precisely.

New Opel Insignia: Country Light
Range and direction of the light vary according to the driving situation and surroundings. The light functions range from curve and bad weather, to town, country roads and autobahn, as well as optimised light for parking. In particular, Opel has further improved the autobahn light of the newest IntelliLux LED. In left turns, the light beam reaches further to the left, so that the driver can more easily see roadside signs. When turning right in autobahn mode, the light beam shines further to the right, in order to avoid glare for oncoming traffic.

Power of the new IntelliLux LED Pixel Light system has been significantly increased. 84 LED elements are arranged in three rows in each ultra-slim headlamp, along with the curve light and dip beam module, as well as the characteristic LED daylight running lamp underneath.

Bold, pure, elegant: attractive new front and rear design

“New Insignia continues to build upon our Bold and Pure design execution”, said Opel’s Design Vice President, Mark Adams. “New front end emphasizes Insignia’s elegant and sporty character by proportionally making everything feel lower, wider and executed with clear German attention to detail.”

New chrome-edged radiator grille is wider and features prominent slats; the Opel logo in the middle of the chrome bar seems larger. Chrome bar itself stretches right and left to the LED daylight running lamps, which are now located at the bottom instead of the top of each headlamp. Opel Insignia appears lower and wider, also thanks to the air inlets with integrated fog lamps.

Rear of the Opel Insignia Grand Sport and Sports Tourer is also defined by clear lines. As already on the estate, the valence panel of the Grand Sport limousine will also feature two slots instead of round holes for the exhaust pipes.

Slim, horizontal lines of the design continue in the interior. Precisely placed chrome accents underline the stylish ambience.

Full range: new rear view camera, rear cross traffic alert and more

Typically for a flagship, the Opel Insignia will feature a full range of assistance and infotainment systems. A new digital rear view camera improves rearward vision. Safety when reversing out of parking spaces can be further increased by the optional rear cross traffic alert. System uses radar sensors to detect objects 90 degrees to the left and right behind the Insignia, at distances of up to 20 metres. Driver is warned via the display and acoustic signals.

Additional assistance systems include:

  • Forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection
  • Lane keep assist
  • Side blind spot alert
  • Adaptive cruise control with emergency braking
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Advanced park assist
  • Head-up display, keeping the driver’s eyes on the road.

Portfolio of infotainment systems compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will extend from Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi to Multimedia Navi Pro. Top-of-the-line unit features numerous Connected Navigation services. With real-time traffic information, online map updates and predictive navigation, journeys are more relaxing. New symbols give the navigation display a fresher, more modern appearance. Same goes for the instruments. When e-Call is installed, an emergency call is automatically sent if the seatbelt tensioners or airbags are deployed. Alternatively, help can be actively summoned in seconds by simply pressing the red button.

New Opel Insignia will offer high comfort. Ergonomically certified AGR seats are optionally available for driver and front passenger. Compatible smartphones can be charged wirelessly. Tailgate of the Sports Tourer can be opened and closed automatically by a movement of the foot under the sensors in the rear bumper.

Dream Team: New Top BiTurbo Diesel Engine for Opel Insignia Flagship

  • Really strong: Sequential turbocharging for 154 kW/210 hp and high torque
  • Ideal combination: Always with eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive
  • Very efficient: Combined NEDC fuel consumption 6.9 liters, equivalent to 183 g/km CO2
  • Made in Germany: Engine from the Kaiserslautern plant for all Insignia variants

Dream team: The new top-of-the-line 2.0-liter diesel engine for the Opel Insignia BiTurbo always comes with all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmission.

Production-start for the new top-of-the-line engine and the Opel Insignia Country Tourer from Opel: With the summer slowly drawing to an end, the first 2.0 liter BiTurbo diesel engines will roll off the production line. They are tailored for the Country Tourer along with all other variants of Opel’s flagship. With the Grand Sport, Sports Tourer and Country Tourer the second generation Insignia can be ordered with the new top-of-the-range diesel this year. The Country Tourer appeals to all Insignia fans looking for stylish and practical station wagon with off-road looks. The newcomer will celebrate its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (September 14-24).

The newly designed 2.0-liter diesel engine produces 154 kW/210 hp at 4,000 rpm and develops strong torque of 480 Nm from only 1,500 rpm thanks to sequential two-stage turbocharging (Official fuel consumption Grand Sport 2.0 BiTurbo in accordance with New European Driving Cycle: urban 8.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.7 l/100 km, combined 6.9 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 183 g/km). The new Insignia BiTurbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds with a maximum speed of 233 km/h.

Such strength must be transferred to the road intelligently, which is why the top-of-the-line engine always comes in combination with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and high-tech all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. In addition to the power output, the drivability (turbo power in every situation) and the refinement of the new common rail engine are also further improved compared with the existing extremely popular 2.0 liter unit with single turbocharger (125 kW/170 PS; official fuel consumption Grand Sport with front-wheel drive in accordance with NEDC urban 6.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.3 l/100 km, combined 5.2 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 136 g/km).

In addition to the legally required NEDC Data, Opel also determined values in accordance with the Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) which are officially required as of this autumn for the newly developed four-cylinder BiTurbo. The WLTP values (Insignia Grand Sport 2.0 BiTurbo WLTP fuel consumption range 12.2-6.2[1] l/100 km, combined 8.0-7.5 l/100 km, 209-196 g/km CO2) are much more realistic than the hitherto officially applicable NEDC figures (Official fuel consumption Grand Sport 2.0 BiTurbo in accordance with NEDC urban 8.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.7 l/100 km, combined 6.9 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 183 g/km). The WLTP figures also take different driving styles into consideration, which enables customers to get a better estimate of their own fuel consumption[2]. An overview of the more realistic consumption figures in accordance with the WLTP cycle can be found on opel.de.

Like the existing 125 kW/170 hp 2.0 liter engine with single turbocharger, the new top-of-the-line diesel also features highly effective Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust after-treatment technology with AdBlue injection, which removes nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the engine’s exhaust gases. The watery urea solution which contains ammonia (NH3) reacts with the nitrogen oxides in the SCR catalytic converter and creates harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

New top-of-the-line diesel with sequential two-stage turbocharging

Opel has pulled out all the stops for maximum fuel efficiency and maximum fun-to-drive. The new diesel features two turbochargers functioning sequentially. The intake air enters the first turbocharger where it is compressed and passed to the second turbo. This is driven by Variable Geometry Turbine vanes in the exhaust gas, which increase torque at low engine speeds and raise power at higher engine speeds. VGT then adjusts the vanes to parallel with the gas flow, thus reducing back pressure and lowering fuel consumption. The now highly compressed and very hot intake air then passes through an intercooler on the way to the combustion chambers. Diesel fuel is then injected through seven-hole jets in up to ten sequences at 2000 bar. The boost-pressure is controlled, according to engine-speed and load, by three bypass valves and an electrically actuated variable turbine geometry.

Apart from increased efficiency, higher power output and torque, refinement and noise attenuation were priorities in the design of the new engine. The Opel engineers therefore gave the engine a cast-iron crankshaft, balance shafts, a stiffened flywheel and a two-piece oil sump, in order to reduce diesel-typical vibrations and acoustics to a minimum. In order to further lower fuel consumption, the water pump is only switched on when temperatures require it. Just like the well-known 2.0 liter diesel, the new BiTurbo diesel is built in Opel’s Kaiserslautern plant.

Power of two turbos: BiTurbo diesels now with Opel Astra, Insignia

A 2.0 liter BiTurbo diesel with 143 kW/195 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm already made its debut in the first-generation Insignia in 2012, and was then offered in the Astra, Cascada, GTC and Zafira Tourer.

The new 154 kW/210 hp and 480 Nm engine for the Insignia fits perfectly into the range of current Opel power units with two-stage turbocharging.

Opel Astra, the European Car of the Year 2016, is available as hatchback and Sports Tourer with a 118 kW/160 hp 1.6 BiTurbo. The four-cylinder engine develops maximum torque of 350 Nm at only 1,500 rpm (Official fuel consumption Astra hatchback in accordance with NEDC, urban 5.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.4 l/100 km, combined 4.0 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 106 g/km CO2). The fastest Astra diesel thus accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 220 km/h.

Favored Flagship: 50,000 Orders for New Opel Insignia Already

In the fast lane: Only a few months after starting sales the new Opel Insignia has already attracted more than 50,000 customer orders.

  • High level: Innovative options popular with Opel Insignia buyers across Europe
  • Top connection: 86% order Navi 900 IntelliLink infotainment system
  • Top innovations: 70% look to the ergonomic seats, 63% to IntelliLux headlights
  • Top results: New Opel Insignia takes first position in more than 60 percent of comparison tests so far

Outstanding connectivity and infotainment, a high level of comfort along with great visibility and a stunning design – these are just some of the attributes of the new Opel Insignia that have already won over more than 50,000 customers and media representatives from across Europe. Current orders are well above what Opel had expected to receive despite order books for the Insignia Grand Sport and the Insignia Sports Tourer only having opened in mid-February and the flagship only having arrived at dealership in many major markets in late June. Now that the market launch is underway, the first wins in comparison tests are also rolling in. The success is made even more apparent by a look at the take rates of various features. A high percentage order the new flagship from Rüsselsheim with features such the intelligent on-board navigation system Navi 900 IntelliLink, AGR-certified ergonomic seats, or the new generation IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights, proving that Opel’s credo of making innovative solutions available at affordable prices is paying dividends with customers – the future is everyone’s.

“We are obviously delighted with the current success of the new Opel Insignia. It shows that our new flagship has all the right ingredients – it looks great, delivers on driving pleasure and comes with a high level of comfort,” said Opel Managing Director Sales & Aftersales Peter Küspert. “Furthermore, the orders for the innovative solutions and options show that our customers appreciate our approach of making trendsetting systems and features available to a wide audience and not just a select few.”

Navi 900 IntelliLink: Smartphone integration and integrated navigation system

The feature topping almost every Insignia owner’s wish list is Navi 900 IntelliLink – almost 9 out of 10 Opel Insignias have already been ordered with the top-of-the-range infotainment system. The optional solution with integrated navigation system comes with an 8-inch capacitive color touchscreen. The map data covers all of Europe, and with Opel OnStar, destinations that come from the OnStar advisor or that are sent in advance via myOpel smartphone app can be downloaded directly to the navigation system. Furthermore the system offers a high level of personalization – the home screen can be tailored according to customer preferences. Based on its ‘favorites’ concept, users can adapt the infotainment system to their individual needs. Up to 60 favorites including radio stations, phone contacts, playlists, navigation destinations, etc. can be stored.

Furthermore, it is, depending on the end device, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, thus bringing the world of smartphones into the car. This allows Apple users to make calls, start navigation directions to a destination with Apple Maps, send and receive messages and listen to music via Spotify right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. A full list of Apple CarPlay apps can be found at apple.com/ios/carplay. Android Auto is built around Google Maps, Google Now and the ability to talk to Google, as well as a growing audio and messaging app ecosystem. A full list of supported apps is available at android.com/auto. If Opel OnStar is on board, smartphones can also connect to the car’s powerful 4G/LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot[1] – for example for flawless online audio streaming.

Enjoying the perfect view in comfort

Elsewhere, 70% of new Insignias are ordered with the high level of comfort provided by the ergonomically certified AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rücken / Campaign for Healthier Backs) front seats. In addition to numerous adjustment options, the ergonomic front seats in the new Insignia offer a unique combination of electric side bolster settings, massage, memory and ventilation functions. They provide excellent long-distance travel seating comfort and continue the Opel tradition of award-winning, back-friendly seats that are offered at very attractive prices.

One of the technology highlights driving the success of the new Opel Insignia is the new generation of the trendsetting Opel IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights. 63% of the flagship from Rüsselsheim are ordered with the innovative system. In the Opel Insignia 32 LED segments – twice as many as in the Opel Astra – take over the high beam function. The increased number of LED segments enables the various light patterns to adapt to the prevailing traffic situation even more precisely and the transitions are faster and more seamless. To improve visibility even further while driving through curves on full high beam, Opel engineers added an innovative active curve lighting function to the new Insignia’s IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights. Last but not least, a further, dedicated LED spotlight located within the low beam module provides additional illumination at full high-beam for up to 400 meters.

Higher trim levels proving to be popular

Elsewhere, the uplevel trims available for the new Opel Insignia are also proving extremely popular with customers. Currently, over 60 percent of the over 50,000 Insignia buyers from across Europe have opted for higher trims, which give them access to a lot more standard equipment and features that they subsequently do not need to order as an option. For example, Opel’s personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar comes as standard with the ‘Innovation’ trim.

Winning formula

However, Opel’s new flagship and it’s combination of innovative features, driving pleasure, spaciousness and high level of comfort is not only proving popular with customers – it is also impressing automotive journalists from across Europe. With the first results of the comparison tests against various competitors having recently been published, the Insignia is proving that Opel have found the winning formula once again. To date, Opel’s new flagship has won eight of 13 comparison tests (62 percent): two wins in Germany (Autostraßenverkehr edition 17/17 and Auto Zeitung edition 17/17), three wins in the Netherlands (AutoWeek edition 29/17 and online July 21, AutoVisie edition July 6), and each in France (caradisiac.com), Poland (Auto Świat, edition 28/17 of July 10) and the Czech Republic (auto.cz).

  • Mobile command vehicle: Opel Insignia Sports Tourer in fire department outfit
  • Fire department personnel carrier: Opel Vivaro tailored ex works

Mobile HQ: The new Opel Insignia Sports Tourer makes its debut at RETTmobil 2017 as a command vehicle for the fire service.

Opel will show two new emergency service vehicles at the 17th RETTmobil in Fulda. An Insignia Sports Tourer mobile command vehicle and a Vivaro personnel carrier will make their debuts at the international rescue and mobility exhibition. RETTmobil is open to visitors Wednesday through Friday from 09.00CET until 17.00CET. Just like last year, Opel will present its newcomers at booth 505 in tent 5. The expert staff at the Opel stand is ready to inform visitors about the carmaker’s broad portfolio of emergency vehicles and other vehicle conversion options. The emergency service vehicles are made by Opel Special Vehicles in Rüsselsheim.

As fast as the fire department: Opel Insignia Sports Tourer

Eye-catching: In its red and yellow color scheme the new Opel Insignia Sports Tourer is immediately recognizable as a command vehicle for the fire service.

Opel is showing the fire department command vehicle with flagship equipment. The Insignia Sports Tourer comes with a 191 kW/260 hp turbocharged 2.0 liter gasoline engine (NEDC fuel consumption: urban 11.5 l/100 km, extra-urban 7.1 l/100 km, combined 8.7 l/100 km, 199 g/km CO2). It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 245 km/h. The Insignia can always transfer its power to the road thanks to its intelligent all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. This is especially important when the roads are wet or snowy.

Furthermore, drivers can enjoy the new 8-speed automatic transmission, which allows them to keep their hands on the steering wheel even in the most dangerous situations. The Sports Tourer is equipped with a special signal system and LED front flashers to ensure that it arrives on site safely. In addition, a tailored equipment carrier in the spare wheel well of the trunk ensures safe storage of radio and fire-fighting related additional equipment.

All aboard: Opel Vivaro for nine fire fighters

Very spacious: Opel Vivaro Combi as crew transportation can accommodate up to nine fire fighters and their equipment.
Elsewhere, Opel will also display their light commercial vehicle bestseller at the RETTmobil. The Vivaro Combi fire department personnel carrier has a gross permissible weight of 2.9 tons and can carry up to nine people. Under the hood it can rely on the 107 kW/145 hp 1.6 BiTurbo (NEDC diesel consumption: urban 6.6 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.4 l/100 km, combined 5.9 l/100 km, 152 g/km CO2). In general, the 5.40 meter long L2 variant of the Vivaro impresses with good driving performance, ample space, a high load capacity and comfort in abundance. Up front, it comes with a three-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support along with a double bench-seat. Removable three-seat-benches in the second and third row ensure plenty of knee room – which is especially important for quick ingress and egress. A mesh installed behind the third row of seats protects the fire fighters from equipment stored in the trunk in extreme driving situations.

Just like the Opel Insignia command vehicle the Opel Vivaro is equipped with an LED special signal systems with the obligatory siren. Furthermore it catches other road users’ attention with its front and rear flashers. Thanks to a built-in preliminary radio communication set-up, the fire fighters can connect their various devices individually.

Command center: In the Opel Vivaro Combi the centrally placed controls for the emergency signal system are within easy reach.

The eye-catching signal graphics of both vehicles on display come from design112. The Hessian company has been specialized in special decals for two decades and works closely with Opel Special Vehicles.

The all-rounder is the ideal choice for fans of winter sports and the countryside but also for everybody who appreciates a very individual impression.

All-terrain Insignia: All-wheel drive with torque vectoring and 20 millimeter more ground clearance.
The new Opel Insignia Country Tourer impresses with the same virtues as its Grand Sport and Sports Tourer siblings – it is spacious and considerably lighter than the outgoing version thanks an all-new architecture. It also comes with a wide range of innovative technologies, just as a true flagship should. Furthermore, it captivates with its very own country-style charm: all-round black protective cladding and silver front and rear skid plates give the newcomer a rugged offroad appearance. Customers who prefer an even more individual vehicle can also tailor it thanks to the Opel Exclusive concept, which provides an unlimited choice of colors.

Adventure-ready: Leading propulsion and chassis technologies

A broad powertrain portfolio – including a brand new top-of-the-range diesel engine – delivers the performance of the Opel Insignia Country Tourer. In addition, the newcomer will also be available with the new eight-speed automatic transmission and ground-breaking all-wheel drive technology. Twenty millimeters of additional ground clearance along with the innovative all-wheel drive with torque vectoring and the new five-link rear suspension cater for the wish to leave asphalt roads and give the Insignia Country Tourer the most polished system in its class. Instead of a traditional rear differential, which transmits equal amounts of torque to the rear wheels, the Opel Insignia Country Tourer boasts two electrically controlled multi-plates clutches which enable a more individual and precise transmission of power to each wheel – irrespective of road or weather conditions. To counteract the understeer tendency in tight corners taken at higher speeds, the system, depending on the acceleration command and steering movement, sends more torque to the outside rear wheel. This happens without any further driver intervention and in a split second. This stabilizes the vehicle. Furthermore, the Insignia turns in with more precision, responding more spontaneously to inputs from the driver. This results in neutral vehicle behavior, making the car more stable and steerable for the driver no matter what the situation.

The further improved FlexRide chassis provides the basis for optimal, situation-based driving behavior. It adapts the dampers, steering, throttle response and shift points (on automatics) independently or based on the modes ‘Standard’, ‘Sport’ or ‘Tour’ which can be selected by the driver. The new central ‘Drive Mode Control’ software is the heart and soul of the adaptive chassis. It continuously analyzes the information provided by the sensors and settings and recognizes the individual driving style.

“The Country Tourer is the perfect choice for all those who want to combine ultra-modern connectivity and assistance systems along with the roominess of the new Insignia with individual styling and offroad qualities. The adventurous-looking station wagon is the ideal car for all athletes among Insignia fans who simultaneously love a more rugged look,” said Peter Christian Küspert, Opel Vice President Sales & Aftersales.

Robust exterior, spacious interior: Opel Insignia for country fans

The new Insignia Sports Tourer is already in very good shape: It takes the Opel design philosophy to the next level with its sporty yet elegant styling and its breathtaking lines. The all-new lightweight architecture is one of the main reasons behind its feisty and agile performance. The Country Tourer has all of these qualities and more. Its more rugged and individual charm makes it the top-of-the-line variant of the Insignia model range and from the very start of the development process the designers and the engineers worked on a third distinct Insignia variant.

The fascia of the new Opel Insignia Country Tourer looks even more purposeful than that of its Sports Tourer sibling. The prominent landscape grille and slim headlamps offer a wide horizontal impression, whilst the silver colored skid plate helps to pull the car down to underline the solid stance. Molded black protective cladding in the lower fascia, the wheel arches and along the lower body side emphasize the rugged appearance. Just like the front, the rear end also delivers adventurous cues, such as a silver colored skid plate and dual exhaust bezels that reinforce the lower and wider impression.

“We wanted our new Opel Insignia Country Tourer to be robust in every respect while simultaneously displaying the typical elegant Opel philosophy of sculptural artistry and German precision,” said Mark Adams, Vice President Design. “It has the presence of a true flagship, combining a sophisticated athletic shape enhanced by rugged off road detailing.”

Those looking for a truly unique Insignia will soon have an unlimited amount of options at their disposal with Opel looking to launch the Opel Exclusive concept also with the Insignia Country Tourer. Apart from the regular colors buyers can choose from 15 additional colors only available to Exclusive customers. However, that is by no means all.

The Opel Exclusive experts can even reproduce any paint tone desired if provided with a sample or an image. Furthermore, Exclusive customers can personalize their vehicles even further thanks to additional wheel designs and leather interior options.

Matching the character of the rugged all-rounder, the new Opel Insignia Country Tourer is above all extremely practical. In order to make loading as easy as possible, the tailgate can be opened without touching the car. In combination with “Keyless Open & Start” a simple kicking motion under the rear bumper is enough to open the tailgate (a vehicle silhouette projected onto the ground shows the correct area). Another kicking motion under the bumper will close the tailgate. In order to increase loading space to 1,665 liters, 130 liters more than on the outgoing version, the new Insignia Country Tourer comes with optional 40/20/40 foldable rear seats enabling even more flexible loading space configurations. The rear seat bank can be folded down by simply pushing a button located in the luggage compartment. And the standard roof railing not only emphasizes the adventurous look but also increases the application spectrum of the new Insignia Country Tourer allowing the rugged station wagon to carry roof loads of up to 100 kilograms.

Elsewhere, the wheelbase has been elongated by 92 mm, enabling a much more spacious interior that especially benefits the rear passengers. The wellness atmosphere is further underlined by the driver-oriented cockpit, the AGR-certified (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.) premium ergonomic front seats and the heated outer rear seats. The heated windshield and the heated steering wheel ensure good visibility and warm hands respectively on cold days.

Outstanding technology on board: Safe, comfortable, superb connectivity

Just like its Opel Grand Sport and Sports Tourer siblings, the Opel Insignia Country Tourer comes with numerous ultra-modern technologies and assistance systems that enable a new level of safety and comfort. One of the highlights in every sense of the word is the second generation of Opel’s innovative and award-winning adaptive IntelliLux LED Matrix light. The Opel LED  Matrix light now has 16 LED segments integrated into each of the very slim headlamps and comes with an innovative active curve lighting function and dedicated LED spotlight with a range of up to 400 meters. Further additions include the head up display, the 360° surround view camera, adaptive cruise control (ACC) with automatic emergency braking, Lane Keep Assist with automated steering correction and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The latest Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible IntelliLink systems ensure outstanding entertainment and connectivity. And the smartphone can even be charged without a cable while it is seamlessly integrated within the infotainment system. The groundbreaking personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar is also on board. It comes with an extensive service portfolio ranging from automatic crash response to stolen vehicle assistance. Two newcomers to the OnStar portfolio are the booking service1, and parking search2. Both services rely OnStar advisors who can book hotel rooms and/or search for suitable carparks.

!NEW! CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann Opens Opel Stand at Geneva Motor Show

  • New possibilities: Opel and Vauxhall in future under one roof with PSA
  • Good cooperation: Presentation of the Opel Crossland X developed with PSA
  • Dynamic duo: World premiere of Opel Insignia Grand Sport and Sports Tourer

Major appearance in Geneva: Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann presents the new Opel Insignia Grand Sport and the new Opel Crossland X.

The Opel/Vauxhall stand at the 87th Geneva Motor Show (March 7‑19) was opened this morning by Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. In front of an audience of around 400 international journalists, the Opel Group CEO spoke about the alliance with the PSA Group announced in Paris the day before. Later he presented the Opel Crossland X crossover that has already been developed together with PSA. Finally there was the world premiere of the second-generation Opel Insignia. Dr. Neumann revealed, together with vice president of design, Mark Adams, Opel Insignia Grand Sport five-door liftback and the spacious Insignia Sports Tourer.

From Opel Monza Concept to the Opel Insignia Grand Sport: Mark Adams, Vice President Design presents the all-new Opel flagship.

Speaking today about the new possibilities for the brand under the roof of PSA, Opel CEO Neumann said “We now have the chance to create a real European champion. We will benefit from the new scale but also from the joint vehicle development and the strengths of both our companies with their highly motivated and highly qualified employees.”

Opel and PSA have already been working together closely for four years. In Geneva Dr. Neumann presented the stylish Opel Crossland X, the first successful result of the joint vehicle development.

Cool crossover with ultra-modern technologies

Good cooperation: Presentation of the Opel Crossland X developed with PSA.

The Crossland X is the second member of the Opel family with the X in its name. While the popular Opel Mokka X is a typical SUV with the option of all-wheel drive for occasional trips off-road, the new Opel Crossland X with its compact exterior dimensions is designed for the urban lifestyle; it is also spacious and comfortable for the holidays. The driver and passengers enjoy the high seating positions typical of a SUV, in a body that is 16 centimeters shorter but 10 centimeters taller than that of the Opel Astra. Opel’s new crossover model comes with ultra-modern technologies that make everyday life safer, simpler and more pleasant. Optional innovative Full-LED headlamps, a head up display and the Panoramic Rear View Camera along with Advanced Park Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Speed Sign Recognition, Driver Drowsiness System and Side Blind Sport Alert are just some examples. Opel OnStar and the modern IntelliLink infotainment systems, which are, depending on the end device, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensure outstanding digital connectivity.

New flagship: World premiere for new generation Opel Insignia

The all-new Opel Insignia is in extremely good shape. It has the sporty elegance of a large coupé, its completely new architecture makes it uncompromisingly spacious and truly fun to drive, and it offers exemplary safety and comfort features just as a true flagship should. Not only does the second generation Insignia impress with its breathtaking lines on the outside and its great wellness atmosphere on the inside, it also provides the widest range of intelligent technologies reaching from the trendsetting Opel IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights and the very sophisticated all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring to ultra-modern driver assistance systems and the refined head up display. The active aluminum hood for improved pedestrian protection rounds off the significant increase in safety. In addition, the Insignia comes with first-class connectivity with smartphone integration, which now offers a new Opel OnStar feature – the Personal Assistant. It allows Insignia occupants to book hotel rooms[1] and search for suitable parking spots[2] via an OnStar Advisor – indeed a real person and not a computer. A 360o degree camera, an eight-speed automatic transmission and intelligent all-wheel drive with torque vectoring (torque distribution to individual wheels) are available for the first time. Together with efficient new generation turbo engines, weight reduction of up to 200 kilograms (depending on the variant) and a lower seating position, the new Opel Insignia Grand Sport and Sports Tourer are more agile than ever before and give the driver a direct and rewarding driving experience.

New Opel Insignia Sports Tourer and Grand Sport: Order books open on February

As of February 20, the new Opel flagship is available to order as a Insignia Grand Sport from €25,940 (all prices RRP incl. VAT in Germany) and as a Sports Tourer from €26,940. And the new generation Opel  Insignia is proving to be irresistible: the newcomer not only stands out with its elegantly sporty silhouette featuring exemplary aerodynamics (CD of just 0.26 for the coupé-like five-door) but is also full of technological innovations.

Dynamic duo: New Opel Insignia Sports Tourer and Grand Sport impress with their exciting design, top technologies and luxurious comfort, without any compromises in practicality.

All in all, the new Insignia impresses with improved agility and spaciousness along with excellent value for money, making it a strong challenger even for premium brand models. The new Opel Insignia starts as standard with driver assistance systems such as forward collision alert with pedestrian recognition, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist with automatic steering correction and following distance indication. The active hood for improved pedestrian protection rounds off the significant increase in safety. Elsewhere, even the basic version comes with a touchscreen.

The second generation Insignia is based on an all-new architecture. It weighs up to 175 kilograms less than the outgoing model as a Grand Sport limousine, and up to 200 kg less as a spacious Sports Tourer station wagon. This substantial mass reduction and the new, extremely precise steering system are responsible for the improved driving dynamics.

Furthermore, the all-new Opel flagship debuts with a wide range of highly efficient engines and friction-optimized transmissions designed to provide better efficiency and lower fuel costs. Fuel consumption of the expected volume engines available for the Grand Sport (gasoline: 1.5 liter Turbo; diesel: 1.6 CDTI) is down by three to ten percent compared with the equivalent outgoing models, according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

Opel already announced in December 2015 that the company will provide consumption figures based on the WLTP driving cycle for future models. The WLTP driving cycle will become legally binding as of the fall of 2017 and, compared with the currently applicable NEDC, is closer aligned to real driving behavior. Starting with the new Astra, Opel already began providing CO2 and fuel consumption data gathered in accordance with WLTP driving cycle in addition to the official NEDC data as of June 2016. This gives Opel customers a more realistic estimate of the daily consumption of their vehicle. Tests conducted by renowned publications such as Italian magazine Quattroruote already show that the Opel data collected in accordance with the WLTP driving cycle comes very close to real-life consumption.

New gasoline and refined diesel engines available at start of sales

Extremely efficient gasoline unit: 1.5 liter all-aluminum, turbo-charged direct injection engine is available in two output levels with 103 kW/140 hp and 122 kW/165 hp.

The engine portfolio of the new Opel Insignia Grand Sport starts with a newly designed extremely efficient gasoline unit, the 1.5 liter turbo available in two output levels. The entry-level engine offers 103 kW/140 hp (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 7.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.7 l/100 km, combined 5.7 l/100 km; 129 g/km CO2) and impresses with powerful torque of 250 Nm between 2,000 and 4,100 rpm. The more powerful 121 kW/165 hp version (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 7.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.9 l/100 km, combined 5.7 l/100 km; 130 g/km CO2) has everything that it takes to be the bestselling gasoline engine available for the Insignia family.

Compared to the already very efficient 1.6 liter Turbo (125 kW/170 hp) used in the outgoing model, the new engine reduces consumption in accordance with the WLTP driving cycle on average by around another three percent.

The 1.5 liter all-aluminum, turbo-charged direct injection unit has the largest displacement of all the ultra-modern three and four-cylinder members of Opel’s small gasoline engine family. The new 1.5 liter high-tech four-cylinder also impresses with sharp throttle response and ample torque in every situation – two typical features of these units. A further highlight is the top-of-the-range gasoline engine for the new Opel Insignia.

The 2.0 liter turbo delivers 191 kW/260 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 11.5 l/100 km, extra-urban 7.0 l/100 km, combined 8.6 l/100 km; 197 g/km CO2). The 2.0 liter, four-cylinder unit comes in combination with the completely new eight-speed automatic transmission, which shifts smoothly, and a highly sophisticated all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring – a unique feature in the midsize segment. On this high-tech all-wheel drive system, two multi-plate clutches replace a conventional rear axle differential and can accelerate the wheels individually in a split-second depending on the driving situation.

The propulsion offering is rounded off by the new six-speed manual transmission for the popular 1.6 liter diesel engines with outputs of 81 kW/110 hp (NEDC fuel consumption Insignia Grand Sport: urban 4.6 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.6 l/100 km, combined 4.0 l/100 km; 105 g/km CO2) and 100 kW/136 hp (NEDC fuel consumption  Insignia Grand Sport: urban 5.1 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.9 l/100 km, combined 4.3 l/100 km; 114 g/km CO2). This new combination of friction-optimized manual transmission and refined 1.6 CDTI with 81 kW/110 hp results in average fuel savings in the WLTP driving cycle of ten percent compared to the outgoing model.

In addition, Opel will offer the refined 2.0 liter diesel with 125 kW/170 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm (NEDC fuel consumption  Insignia Grand Sport: urban 6.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.3 l/100 km, combined 5.2 l/100 km; 136 g/km CO2).
