Opel Celebrates 20 Years of seats with AGR Seal of Approval

  • Pioneer: Opel democratises back-friendly seating in variety of market segments
  • AGR premiere: 2003 Signum was first Opel with ergonomically certified seats
  • More than just seats: Total vehicle concept of Opel Meriva awarded AGR seal
  • Wide choice: AGR-certified seats for today’s Opel Astra, Crossland and Grandland
  • For that sporty feeling: Exclusive AGR performance seats for Opel GSe models

Opel Signum

Opel this year marks 20th anniversary of the introduction of healthy seats certified by AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. – an independent German association promoting research related to back-pain prevention).

Latest generation of AGR seats is available in new Opel Grandland GSe, the Astra GSe and the Astra Sports Tourer GSe. But the start was made exactly two decades ago by the Opel Signum, which was the first car to offer AGR seats in the mid-size segment.

Seats form the link between people and the vehicle. They are crucial for a comfortable, relaxed journey. That is why Opel places great importance on ensuring that they offer optimum comfort and support for the spine, especially on longer journeys. “Drivers and passengers come into contact with no other component in the car as intensively as with the seat. Our goal as a carmaker is that our customers do not have to think about the seat even on longer trips, because it offers comfort and also prevents the risk of back pain in the long term,” said Stefan Koob, who is responsible for the development of seat structures.

In-car ergonomics is more than just a feel-good factor. Ergonomics also includes safety. A relaxed, back-friendly seat prevents fatigue during the journey; and in the event of a accident, the seat occupant has a chance of a positive outcome above all if the seat manages to hold him or her in position. Only then can seat belts and airbags fully provide their protection.

Opel Signum 2003: First Opel with AGR ergonomic seats

“At Opel, we have always taken the democratisation of seating comfort to heart. That means everyone is entitled to a good seat in the car,” Koob explained. Back in 2003 the ergonomic seats of Opel Signum set a new standard in the automotive industry. Thereafter the healthy seats were rolled out across much of the Opel model range. Long-distance and company car drivers were especially grateful; thanks to numerous adjustment functions, the ergonomic seats with AGR certification could be optimally adjusted for every driver, so that he or she got out rested and without discomfort even after hours of driving.

Opel Signum: AGR ergonomic seat

A few years later, another premiere followed. In 2010, the flexible Opel Meriva van was the first vehicle to receive an AGR seal of approval. Meriva’s integral ergonomics system comprised the ergonomic seats, the FlexDoors doors that opened in opposite directions, variable FlexSpace rear seating concept and the FlexFix bicycle rack.

For all shapes and sizes: Wide choice of various AGR-certified seats

Opel today offers a variety of AGR seats with a choice of comfort or more sports-oriented contours in the Astra, Crossland and Grandland. To enable the driver and the front passenger to adopt a comfortable and back-friendly seating position for any journey, AGR seats offer 10 adjustments for the driver and six for the co-driver. Regardless of the seat contour, the multitude of adjustable parameters – many electrically operated on the driver’s seat – include sliding range, height, tilt, backrest tilt, thigh support, lumbar support and seat cushion tilt, as well as heating for the cold season.

Top of the line: Performance seats in Opel Grandland GSe and Opel Astra GSe

New GSe performance seats represent the youngest developments in healthy seating technology from Opel. Trimmed in black Alcantara, stylish front seats in Opel Grandland GSe, Astra GSe and Astra Sports Tourer GSe feature especially high upper wings. Unique construction of the seats in Astra GSe models features fully integrated head restraints. Another eye-catching detail is the distinctive grey stripe electro-welded onto the backrest. Also unique to GSe is the stitched pattern at base of the backrest and on the seat cushion, while the unmistakable yellow-on-black GSe logo adorns the seatback.

Comfort of AGR driver’s seats can be further enhanced – depending on the model variant – with ventilation. In addition, the memory function particularly comes in handy when sharing driving duties over long distances.

Technology for economical cars: Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller inaugurates hot-forming plant in Kaiserslautern

  • Hot-forming steel enables the production of high-strength body parts
  • Requirements for crash safety and lightweight construction in harmony
  • CO2 emissions while driving are reduced thanks to consistent lightweight construction

Innovative technology for light and economical cars: Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller officially commissioned a state-of-the-art facility for hot-forming steel at the Kaiserslautern site on Thursday. This process is used to manufacture high-strength components for car bodies. Hot-formed components significantly reduce the weight of a body without compromising safety. This also makes vehicles lighter overall and emits less fuel and CO2 .

“We are very pleased about the commissioning of this modern system for hot forming of steel in Kaiserslautern. By manufacturing and processing high-strength components for car bodies, the material thickness and thus the weight of the vehicle can be reduced - without compromising on safety. This lowers the CO2 emissions. This system is therefore another important component in our goal of offering efficient cars for clean driving fun, ”said Opel boss Michael Lohscheller.

In the past few months, the complete press line 2, two incorporation machines and the waste belts in the press cellar were dismantled in the K-19 press shop at the production site in the west of the Palatinate. This created space for the new hot forming system, which includes a press table weighing around 80 tons, an oven around 40 meters long and a 25-meter high chimney.

With hot forming, the sheet to be processed is slowly heated to a temperature of around 930 degrees Celsius over several minutes in an oven. The hot sheet is then placed in the tool and cooled very quickly during the pressing process. This gives it its high strength. Another advantage of the process is that the steel can be formed better.

Plant manager Thierry Vingtans: “We are delighted with the investment in the hot forming system at the Kaiserslautern location. This shows that the plant continues to play an important role in the company's production network. The parts that we manufacture here will in future be built into several vehicle models from various Group brands - including the new Opel Mokka. "

  • Premiere #1: Diesel now available with automatic transmission
  • Premiere #2: Leather trim in combination with ergonomic AGR front seats
  • Price: €24,120 RRP including VAT for Opel Crossland X Edition 1.5 Turbo D Automatic in Germany

Opel Crossland X 1.5 Turbo D

With a new addition to the diesel range, Opel now offers the Crossland X for the first time with the strong power and torque of a turbocharged diesel engine combined with the high comfort of a smooth-shifting automatic transmission. The stylish and functional sport utility vehicle (SUV) is thus available with an automatic gearbox on diesel as well as petrol engines. Also making its premiere in the Opel Crossland X is leather trim, which is available as a luxurious option on the Design Line, Innovation and Ultimate equipment versions in combination with ergonomic AGR front seats that are certified by the back specialists from Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.

Opel Crossland X - Leather trim in combination with ergonomic AGR front seats

The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel produces 88 kW/120 hp and maximum torque of 300 Nm at 1750 rpm (fuel consumption[1] [2]: urban 4.4-4.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.8-3.7 l/100 km, combined 4.0 l/100 km, 105-104 g/km CO2). The engine meets the strict Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard thanks to an innovative oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber coupled with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Opel is bringing the new Crossland X 1.5 Turbo Diesel to the market with a six-speed automatic transmission and fuel-saving start/stop as standard.

The cylinder head with integrated air intake manifold and the crankcase of the new 1.5-litre diesel are made of lightweight aluminium, while the four valves per cylinder are activated by dual overhead camshafts. The common rail direct injection system operates at up to 2,000 bar, with fuel entering the combustion chambers through eight-hole injector nozzles.

For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the emissions reduction system – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. The NOx adsorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off. With this innovative technology the new 1.5-litre diesel meets the strict Euro 6d-TEMP standard for NOx.

Prices for the Opel Crossland X Edition with 88 kW/120 hp 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine begin at €24,120 (RRP including VAT in Germany).

Strong Comeback for Opel / Vauxhall after One Year as Part of Groupe PSA

Groupe PSA CEO Carlos Tavares and Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller
Opel/Vauxhall has been part of Groupe PSA for twelve months – and is on the road to writing a successful comeback story. Last week, the company presented a half-year profit1 of €502 million and an operational free cash flow of around €1.2 billion. This was made possible above all by the affiliation with Groupe PSA, which on August 1, 2017, enabled the creation of a European champion. With the strategic plan PACE!, which Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller presented just 100 days later on November 9, 2017, the company bundles its strengths, leverages synergies and unleashes the full potential of the brand. With PACE! Opel will be profitable, electric and global.

Opel / Vauxhall - One Year as Part of Groupe PSA
“We are a completely different company than 12 months ago. We have set the course for even more competitiveness and have already aligned many areas for the future. We are profiting massively from being part of the successful Groupe PSA. We are very grateful for this – and this is also an obligation,” says Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller.

Opel will be profitable and invest in sites

After just under one year as part of Groupe PSA, Opel/Vauxhall is back in the black. The recurring operating margin for the first half of 2018 is 5.0 per cent. This clearly shows that PACE! is working. The competitiveness of the production plants throughout Europe was significantly improved. Together with the social partners, Opel management has reached performance agreements at all European sites. This has already led to new investment decisions and product allocations across Europe.

For example, the new  Opel/Vauxhall Corsa – also in an electric version – will be produced exclusively at the Spanish plant in Zaragoza. The next generation of the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro will roll off the assembly line in Luton, England, from 2019. Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X SUV will be manufactured in Eisenach from the middle of next year – including a hybrid version that will follow by 2020. New product allocations were also announced for the engine and transmission plants in Tichy (Poland), Aspern (Austria) and Szentgotthard (Hungary). Details of the planned investments in Rüsselsheim and Kaiserslautern will be announced in due course.

Important role for Rüsselsheim Engineering Center

The successful integration of Opel/Vauxhall into Groupe PSA is also reflected in the engineering organisation. The Engineering Center in Rüsselsheim plays an important role in the company and contributes typical Opel strengths to the group's global development network. With 15 Centers of Competence for various areas of technology and responsibility for the development of light commercial vehicles as well as the next generation of four-cylinder petrol engines, the Rüsselsheim Engineering Center assumes global responsibility for the entire Groupe PSA. The abilities of the various competence teams ideally complement each other as part of a global network – for the benefit of all five group brands (Opel, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroën and DS Automobiles). In addition, all new Opel/Vauxhall vehicles will be developed in Rüsselsheim in the future.

“At Opel/Vauxhall, the group's top technologies meet German engineering excellence. This results in outstanding vehicles with a clear profile and emotional design,” says Lohscheller. “We have always stressed that Opel remains German and Vauxhall remains British. We have further sharpened our brands in the past twelve months and I am very much looking forward to our new concept car, with which we will present our future brand face.”

Successful new models – electrification of the product portfolio

The collaboration between the development teams is well-received by customers. With the Crossland X, Mokka X and Grandland X models, Opel/Vauxhall is superbly positioned in the high-growth SUV market and leads the European SUV B segment, among others. The Opel and Vauxhall brands thus contribute to Groupe PSA’s successful SUV offensive with the X Family. In the first half of 2018, these models accounted for 167,200 vehicles sold by both brands.

Opel/Vauxhall continues its product offensive in Europe. Following the launch of the sporty Insignia GSi, the company will also launch a GSi version of the Corsa in the second half of the year.

The new Combo Life passenger version and Combo commercial vehicle will also bring important momentum for growth.

Next year, the all-new Corsa will follow – including a purely battery-powered electric version in 2020, which means that Opel/Vauxhall will already have four electrified vehicles on offer in 2020. By 2024, an electrified version will be available in every European passenger car line, either with pure battery drive or as a plug-in hybrid. This will be possible by the prompt use of Groupe PSA's multi-energy group platforms.

Export offensive in markets beyond Europe gains momentum: Opel goes global

With new importers in Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa and Lebanon, the company forges ahead with its goal of doubling sales outside of Europe by 2020. Opel models will be assembled in Namibia from the second half of the year. By the middle of the next decade, more than ten per cent of Opel's sales volume is to be generated outside of Europe. The company also successfully uses existing Groupe PSA structures for these activities.

Opel’s X-Family of Sport Utility Vehicles Heads Euro 6d-TEMP Initiative

  • Opel Crossland X, Grandland X and Mokka X: Already meet future emissions standard
  • Opel Crossland X and Grandland X: New direct-injection petrol and diesel engines
  • Opel Mokka X: Turbocharged petrol and diesel power units across the range

Opel is leading the automotive industry in the implementation of Euro 6d-TEMP, which includes Real Driving Emissions (RDE) measured on public roads. The brand has already introduced 85 newly developed engines that meet the future European emissions standard. At the forefront of this initiative is the Opel X-family of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) comprising Crossland X, Grandland X and Mokka X.

With the transition to Euro 6d-TEMP, Opel Crossland X and the larger Opel Grandland X compact SUV bring a new generation of 1.5 Diesel engines to the Opel powertrain portfolio. Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of lightweight aluminium, while the four valves per cylinder are activated by dual overhead camshafts.

Opel Crossland X offers the 75 kW/102 hp version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engines with Start/Stop. With the manual six-speed transmission, fuel consumption[1] is 4.7 l/100 km urban, 3.5 l/100 km extra-urban, 4.0 l/100 km and 105 g/km CO2 combined. Maximum torque of 250 Nm is developed at only 1,750 rpm.

Opel Grandland X compact SUV features the 96 kW/130 hp variant of the 1.5 Diesel, with start/stop and a VGT turbocharger (Variable Geometry Turbine vanes). With a six-speed manual transmission, fuel consumption[1] is 4.7-4.7 urban l/100 km, 3.9-3.8 extra-urban l/100 km, 4.2-4.1 l/100 km and 110-108 g/km CO2 combined. Maximum torque of 300 Nm at developed at only 1,750 rpm.

Opel Grandland X 1.5 Turbo D is also available with an advanced eight-speed automatic transmission that not only offers seamless shifting, but also moderate fuel consumption and emissions[1] (4.5-4.4 urban l/100 km, 4.0-3.9 extra-urban l/100 km, 4.2-4.1 l/100 km and 109-108 g/km CO2 combined).

For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the emissions reduction system of the 1.5 Turbo Diesel – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber, AdBlue injector, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. The NOx adsorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off.

Thanks to the new 1.5-litre power unit and the existing 130 kW/177 hp 2.0 Diesel (fuel consumption urban 5.3-5.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.6-4.5 l/100 km, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km and 128-126 g/km CO2 combined), which shares the emissions reduction system of the 1.5 engine, Grandland X customers can choose from two powerful, yet very fuel efficient diesels.

The entry level version of the Opel Grandland X comes with the 96 kW/130 hp 1.2-litre Direct Injection Turbo PureTech petrol unit. The three-cylinder engine, which has won the International Engine of the Year award four times in a row, features a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) and is available with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. The SUV challenger can achieve a top speed of 188 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.1 seconds (fuel consumption manual[1]: 6.1 l/100 km urban, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.3-5.2 l/100 km and 121-120 g/km CO2 combined; fuel consumption automatic[1]: 6.1-6.0 l/100 km urban, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.3-5.2 l/100 km and 121-119 g/km CO2 combined).

Opel Mokka X: All-turbo engine range starts with 120 hp 1.4 Turbo

For the Opel Mokka X, the transition to Euro 6d-TEMP brings a new, stronger, entry-level petrol power unit, meaning that the bestselling B-segment SUV is now powered exclusively by turbocharged engines. The 88 kW/120 hp 1.4 Turbo with start/stop (fuel consumption[1] urban 8.1-8.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.7-5.5 l/100 km, combined 6.6-6.4 l/100 km, 151-148 g/km CO2) drives the front wheels via a manual six-speed transmission and replaces the 85 kW/115 hp 1.6-litre, naturally aspirated predecessor.

Opel’s Euro 6d-TEMP rollout is part of the brand’s commitment to becoming a leader in the reduction of vehicle emissions. The next steps in the journey are the introduction of four electrified models by 2020, including the next generation Corsa, which will also be available as a fully electric vehicle, and the Opel Grandland X plug-in hybrid. By 2024 Opel will become a fully electrified passenger car brand, offering an electric version of every model – as a hybrid or a battery electric vehicle – alongside those powered by internal combustion engines.

WLTP driving cycle: More realistic fuel consumption data

The Euro 6d-TEMP initiative from Opel coincides with the introduction of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) for measuring fuel consumption and emissions, which applies to all new car registrations as of this September.

Like the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the WLTP is a laboratory test, but while the NEDC determines “urban, extra-urban and combined” values based on a theoretical driving profile, the WLTP uses “real” driving profiles drawn from a global statistical survey. The WLTP driving cycle is divided into four parts with different average speeds: low, medium, high and extra high. Each part contains a variety of driving phases, stops, acceleration and braking that represent everyday driving profiles.

Each engine/transmission combination of a certain vehicle type is tested with the most economical as well as the most fuel-intensive vehicle equipment. The data obtained is comparable worldwide, while NEDC values are only valid for Europe.

Real Driving Emissions: Measurements on the road as well as in the laboratory

When the transition to WLTP began in September 2017, the Euro 6c emissions standard also became a legal requirement for the type-approval of new vehicle types. Types that meet the standard by passing the Real Driving Emissions test (RDE) are type approved according to Euro 6d-TEMP. RDE complements the WLTP and measures the pollutants from cars while driven on public roads, Euro 6c becomes a legal requirement for all newly registered vehicles this September, while Euro 6d-TEMP will apply to all new registrations as of September 2019.

Euro 6d-TEMP has a NOx conformity factor of 2.1, which is the maximum margin of error by which cars are allowed to exceed the NOx limit in real world driving – measured in the RDE test. Euro 6d-TEMP will be superseded by Euro 6d with a NOx conformity factor of 1 (plus an error-margin of 0.5) in January 2020 for new types and from January 2021 for new registrations.
