Euro NCAP Five-Star Rating Confirms: All-New Opel Insignia with Strong Safety Concept

  • Top crash test performance: Euro NCAP awards new Insignia five stars
  • New active hood: Provides clearance to hard structures in engine compartment
  • Automatic Emergency Braking: Detects pedestrians as well as vehicles

Optimum pedestrian protection: The active hood of the new Opel Insignia receives special praise in the latest Euro NCAP safety ratings.

Euro NCAP has confirmed the integrity of the new Opel Insignia’s total concept. In its latest safety ratings published today, Euro NCAP awarded the Insignia Grand Sport and Insignia Sports Tourer the maximum five stars. The all-new Opel flagship achieved high scores in each of the categories assessed – adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

Commenting on the new Insignia’s crash test performance, Euro NCAP made special mention of two of the car’s innovative safety systems in particular. The all-new active hood, which in a collision lifts up in milliseconds, thus increasing the distance to the engine and offering pedestrians improved protection, “operated robustly for a variety of pedestrian statures and over a wide range of speed”. The refined Automatic Emergency Braking system, which can detect pedestrians as well as other vehicles “performed well … (and) … at highway speeds showed good performance, with accidents avoided or mitigated.”

“The top marks from Euro NCAP demonstrate that the individual safety components of the new Insignia form a total system” says Managing Director Sales and Aftersales, Peter Küspert. “But safety first at Opel applies not only to our flagship; the youngest members of our product portfolio, the Crossland X and Grandland X also offer front collision warning with Automatic Emergency Braking, as we want to offer all our customers the latest safety technologies. After all, as our new brand claims says, the future is everyone’s.”

In addition to the active hood and Automatic Emergency Braking, the new Opel Insignia impresses with many more ultra-modern assistance systems. No other car in this class offers such a wide range of intelligent technologies as the new generation of the Opel flagship:

  •  IntelliLux LED  Matrix light: The 16 LED segments in charge of the high beam function that are integrated into each of the very slim headlamps of the Insignia enable the various light patterns to adapt to the prevailing traffic situation with the highest precision. Transitions between the multiple lighting patterns are faster and more seamless.
  • Head up display: Information such as speed, traffic signs, set speed of speed limiter and adaptive cruise control along with navigation direction is projected onto the windshield. Drivers thus have everything in their direct line of sight, ensuring that they keep their eyes on the road.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with automatic emergency braking: Uses a camera and radar sensors to measure the distance to the vehicle ahead and adapt the speed accordingly. If the distance decreases abruptly when the driver ahead suddenly brakes, red LEDs in the windscreen/head up display light up and an audible warning sounds. At the same time, ACC initiates automatic emergency braking – faster than a person could normally react.
  • Lane Keep Assist with automatic steering correction: Driving always requires undivided attention, but if the system registers that the car is unintentionally drifting out of its lane, it also provides gentle steering wheel movements to counteract this and shows this on the display when the car is travelling at speeds between 60 and 180 km/h.
These are complemented by assistance systems that provide the Insignia driver with excellent all-round visibility, which really come into play in urban driving:

  • For the first time at Opel, the 360°camera: It consists of four individual cameras, one on each side of the car. The combined system enables an optional 360-degree bird’s-eye view, facilitating every parking and low-speed driving maneuver. The driver can thus keep everything in view over the IntelliLink display in the center console – no uncomfortable neck-craning necessary.
  • Rear View Camera: Shows the area behind the vehicle on the IntelliLink touchscreen as soon as reverse gear is engaged. Dynamic guidelines based on the steering wheel angle are shown on the display and facilitate accurate reversing into a parking space.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The system uses radar sensors in the rear bumper to detect objects coming from up to 20 meters at 90 degrees from the left or right side behind the vehicle and warns with visual and acoustic signals, a very useful function when reversing out of a parking spot with limited visibility.
  • Advanced Park Assist: Ultrasound sensors on the Insignia’s front and rear bumpers identify suitable parking spaces and detect possible obstacles. When the parking spot is detected, the system automatically parks the vehicle without the driver touching the wheel. The driver just controls the pedals and gear shifting.
A host of further radar and camera-based automatic assistants complete the portfolio and make driving in the new Opel Insignia even safer. These include established systems such as:

  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert. Rearward directed radar sensors cover a range up to 70 meters behind the left and right exterior mirrors, thus alerting the driver to road users approaching in the adjacent lanes. In this way, the system prevents impending collisions if a driver tries to change lanes into oncoming traffic.

  • Following Distance Indication in central information display: Uses the front camera or the front radar to detect moving vehicles on the road ahead and calculate the distance to them in seconds, which is more helpful to drivers for their assessment than a meter indication. A stylized green car symbolizes the vehicle in front. If the distance is insufficient, the distance warning is activated and the symbol turns amber.
  • Forward Collision Alert: Assists drivers in avoiding or mitigating the impact of front-end collisions with situation-dependent emergency braking settings. If the Insignia nears the vehicle ahead too quickly, the system warns the driver with a loud audible alarm, a visual warning in the instrument cluster and an LED projection on the windscreen. The driver can choose between ‘near’ ‘mid’ or ‘far’ settings.
  • Traffic Sign Assist: This newest-generation TSA can detect and display round traffic signs such as speed limits and derestrictions as well as many rectangular signs. The system processes data provided by the front camera as well as map data provided by the optional navigation system. Speed limits are also visible in the head up display if it is on board.
Overall, the new Opel Insignia impresses with highly intelligent safety technologies and excellent value for money, making it a rival that even premium brand models have to reckon with.

!NEW! Euro NCAP Advanced: Award-Winning Opel Side Blind Spot Alert

  • Award winning safety feature: Innovative Opel Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA)
  • Lane change risk: Reason for ten percent of serious accidents within the EU
  • From ADAM to Zafira Tourer: Side Blind Spot Alert available in six Opel models
  • Development target: Avoiding collisions and providing outstanding safety

An important award for a life-saving feature – The Euro NCAP Advanced Reward for advanced safety technology goes to Opel. Carmakers who make available new safety technologies, which demonstrate a scientifically proven safety benefit for consumers and society, are eligible for this award. The engineers in Rüsselsheim developed the Side Blind Spot Alert to warn drivers from hidden dangers. When changing lanes, overtaking or turning a corner, other road users can disappear in the blind spot. It is an accident hazard as old as driving. Ten percent of all serious accidents and five percent of traffic-related fatalities are the result of such accidents within the EU.

“The Euro NCAP award is confirmation of our strategy to optimize the safety of our cars based on real-life traffic and collision scenarios. Internal studies show just how much the Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA) increases overall safety. A high market penetration of the system throughout Europe could help reduce all accidents with minor and severe injuries by around one percent,” said Günther Schmall, Director Vehicle Safety Integration.

The electronic eye SBSA already safeguards ADAM, Corsa, Astra, Cascada and Zafira Tourer by scanning lateral traffic via four ultrasonic sensors. Radar technology is used in the Insignia. It scans wide areas around the vehicle. If the electronic guardians pick up an object on collision course, an amber-colored optical warning appears in the relevant exterior door mirror. The light intensity of the LEDs is high and the warning cannot be missed even if the sun is shining. Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA) works in speeds ranging from 10 km/h to 140 km/h (from 10 km/h to 200 km/h in the Insignia) and is available as an option for all of the mentioned models. That obviously also includes the new Opel Corsa E.

In a recent survey, Opel Insignia owners were delighted with the Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA) with 97.2 percent never switching the system off, 87 percent expressing that they were completed convinced by the functionality and 82 percent insisting that they would definitely order the electronic guardian again when buying a new car. For the Insignia Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA) is available as part of a package including rear view camera, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Lane Change Alert (LCA) change assist for euro 490.

!NEW! Opel to Bring Advanced Technologies and Features to China in New Products

Opel will be bringing several new products to China over the coming year. The imported models, which will be announced shortly, will offer a range of advanced technologies and features. They include the FlexRide chassis control system, Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) and a panoramic windshield.

FlexRide Chassis Control System
The FlexRide chassis control system has three settings that enable users to change the car’s character with the push of a button: the balanced Standard mode, the comfort oriented Tour mode and the more active Sport mode.

The system manages acceleration, shifting and the intervention threshold of the car's electronic control system. This enhances stability for better cornering and steering response by automatically adapting to road conditions, cornering speed, vehicle movement and individual driving style.

The Sport mode, for example, emphasizes speed. Acceleration is more dynamic and feedback is more responsive. Tour mode will please those taking medium and long distance trips. Its acceleration response is more moderate and its gear shifts are smoother. The suspension absorbs most of the road vibration, providing a more stable ride.

Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL)
Opel has long been an industry leader in research and development. It was the first car company to bring Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) to the market in 2002. The system features bi-xenon, gas-discharge headlamps that provide variable light beam distribution in terms of width, direction and range. The system has several lighting functions, including adverse weather light, dynamic curve light, cornering light and high beam light assistant, as well as LED daytime running lamps.

AFL received the Advanced award from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) independent consumer organization.

Panoramic Windshield
The Opel design philosophy places a particular emphasis on balancing functionality and comfort. The panoramic windshield is a classic example. The feature is popular with Opel owners, and is available on both the Astra and Zafira Tourer. The completely transparent windshield extends over the heads of passengers. Along with the narrow A-pillar and wide side windows, it ensures a superb field of view while providing a light, airy and comfortable driving experience.

!NEW! Opel Mokka got Maximum Five Stars in Euro NCAP

  • New sub-compact SUV meets highest safety standards
  • One of only a handful of cars to achieve 100 percent on safety assist
  • Excellent child safety performance
Opel Mokka SUV in Euro NCAP crash test
The Opel Mokka SUV has been awarded five stars by the independent consumer organization Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program). With this, yet another car made by Opel has achieved the highest score from Euro NCAP. The Mokka now joins the ranks of the Ampera, Astra, Corsa, Insignia, Meriva and Zafira which all scored the top rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP program.

“It has been a longstanding tradition at Opel to offer the highest possible safety standards to our customers, and the Mokka impressively strengthens our leading role in safety technology. As always, Opel brings cutting edge technologies to a wider segment of customers. We are extremely proud of this,” says Opel Vice President Engineering, Michael F. Ableson.

At the top of the class: Euro NCAP results in detail
Overall, the Opel Mokka achieved impressive results in all five safety categories tested by Euro NCAP. The new Opel SUV scored maximum points or 100 percent in the safety assist category, making it one of only a handful of cars in the European market to be given such a strong test rating. For example, Euro NCAP gave a positive rating to the Mokka’s electronic stability control ESP®Plus and also for its seatbelt reminder function as well as its speed limitation assistance. These are all standard features in the Mokka.

In the adult occupant category, the Mokka achieved 96 out of 100 percent. This excellent result was helped by frontal, side head and side body curtain air bags as well as double belt pre-tensioners with load limiters. Adjustable head restraints on the front seats help to provide protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear end collision. In addition, the Mokka benefits from collapsible pedal assembly PRS (Pedal Release System) for lower leg protection in a frontal impact.

In child occupant safety, Euro NCAP noted: “The Mokka scored maximum points based on the readings from the 3-year-old child dummy in the dynamics test.” This first class score in this category is the result of Opel child safety seats that come standard with rear outer ISOFIX child seat mountings and fasteners for an additional top tether belt.

In the pedestrian safety category, the Mokka’s bumper scored maximum points. Euro NCAP highlighted its “good protection to pedestrians’ legs”.

On the active safety side, which goes beyond Euro NCAP requirements, the Mokka contains many safety assist features.  The SUV offers many innovative technologies that help the driver to avoid collisions like the second generation Opel Eye front camera with its functions Forward Collision Alert (FCA), Following Distance Indicator (FDI), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR). In addition, its rear view camera and the Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL+) raise the safety standards of the Opel Mokka.
