New Additions: Opel Expands Powertrain Portfolio for Opel Insignia

New Opel Insignia Grand Sport and Opel Insignia Sports Tourer

Opel is adding a new petrol engine to the powertrain portfolio of the new Insignia Grand Sport limousine and the Insignia Sports Tourer estate. New power unit produces 125 kW (170 hp) and already develops maximum torque of 350 Newton metres at only 1,500 rpm (Grand Sport fuel consumption in the NEDC 1 cycle: combined 6.0-6.4l/100km, 150-145g/km CO2). Opel offers the four-cylinder engine in combination with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission. In this configuration, the Opel flagship accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in only 8.7 seconds. Maximum speed is 228km/h. New Opel Insignia 2.0 Turbo is already available in Elegance trim at a starting price of €38,919 (all prices RRP including VAT in Germany).


Also new is the combination of 2.0 diesel, eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. With 128 kW (174 hp) and 380 Nm of torque, Opel Insignia 2.0 Diesel offers a calm, confident performance (Grand Sport fuel consumption in the NEDC 1 cycle: combined 5.1l/100km, 135 g/km CO2). High-tech all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring transfers optimum power to the road surface in all conditions. Maximum speed is 223 km/h and the Opel Insignia takes only 8.9s to sprint from zero to 100 km/h. Opel Insignia 2.0 Turbo D with AWD is available from €41,531.

Opel offers the new Insignia as the especially sporty GSi (169 kW/230 hp, Grand Sport NEDC 1 fuel consumption: combined 7.0l/100km, 159 g/km CO2), Grand Sport and Sports Tourer with newly developed, extra-efficient petrol and diesel engines that all meet the strict Euro 6d emissions standard. In addition, new low-friction gearboxes further reduce fuel consumption and at the same time increase comfort. An active full-face shutter further improves the new Insignia’s aerodynamics. Compared to its predecessor, NEDC fuel consumption is up to 18 per cent lower, while CO2 emissions are as low as around 99 g/km. New Opel Insignia is therefore one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its segment.

New Opel Insignia Sports Tourer and Grand Sport: Order books open on February

As of February 20, the new Opel flagship is available to order as a Insignia Grand Sport from €25,940 (all prices RRP incl. VAT in Germany) and as a Sports Tourer from €26,940. And the new generation Opel  Insignia is proving to be irresistible: the newcomer not only stands out with its elegantly sporty silhouette featuring exemplary aerodynamics (CD of just 0.26 for the coupé-like five-door) but is also full of technological innovations.

Dynamic duo: New Opel Insignia Sports Tourer and Grand Sport impress with their exciting design, top technologies and luxurious comfort, without any compromises in practicality.

All in all, the new Insignia impresses with improved agility and spaciousness along with excellent value for money, making it a strong challenger even for premium brand models. The new Opel Insignia starts as standard with driver assistance systems such as forward collision alert with pedestrian recognition, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist with automatic steering correction and following distance indication. The active hood for improved pedestrian protection rounds off the significant increase in safety. Elsewhere, even the basic version comes with a touchscreen.


The second generation Insignia is based on an all-new architecture. It weighs up to 175 kilograms less than the outgoing model as a Grand Sport limousine, and up to 200 kg less as a spacious Sports Tourer station wagon. This substantial mass reduction and the new, extremely precise steering system are responsible for the improved driving dynamics.



Furthermore, the all-new Opel flagship debuts with a wide range of highly efficient engines and friction-optimized transmissions designed to provide better efficiency and lower fuel costs. Fuel consumption of the expected volume engines available for the Grand Sport (gasoline: 1.5 liter Turbo; diesel: 1.6 CDTI) is down by three to ten percent compared with the equivalent outgoing models, according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

Opel already announced in December 2015 that the company will provide consumption figures based on the WLTP driving cycle for future models. The WLTP driving cycle will become legally binding as of the fall of 2017 and, compared with the currently applicable NEDC, is closer aligned to real driving behavior. Starting with the new Astra, Opel already began providing CO2 and fuel consumption data gathered in accordance with WLTP driving cycle in addition to the official NEDC data as of June 2016. This gives Opel customers a more realistic estimate of the daily consumption of their vehicle. Tests conducted by renowned publications such as Italian magazine Quattroruote already show that the Opel data collected in accordance with the WLTP driving cycle comes very close to real-life consumption.

New gasoline and refined diesel engines available at start of sales

Extremely efficient gasoline unit: 1.5 liter all-aluminum, turbo-charged direct injection engine is available in two output levels with 103 kW/140 hp and 122 kW/165 hp.

The engine portfolio of the new Opel Insignia Grand Sport starts with a newly designed extremely efficient gasoline unit, the 1.5 liter turbo available in two output levels. The entry-level engine offers 103 kW/140 hp (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 7.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.7 l/100 km, combined 5.7 l/100 km; 129 g/km CO2) and impresses with powerful torque of 250 Nm between 2,000 and 4,100 rpm. The more powerful 121 kW/165 hp version (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 7.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.9 l/100 km, combined 5.7 l/100 km; 130 g/km CO2) has everything that it takes to be the bestselling gasoline engine available for the Insignia family.

Compared to the already very efficient 1.6 liter Turbo (125 kW/170 hp) used in the outgoing model, the new engine reduces consumption in accordance with the WLTP driving cycle on average by around another three percent.

The 1.5 liter all-aluminum, turbo-charged direct injection unit has the largest displacement of all the ultra-modern three and four-cylinder members of Opel’s small gasoline engine family. The new 1.5 liter high-tech four-cylinder also impresses with sharp throttle response and ample torque in every situation – two typical features of these units. A further highlight is the top-of-the-range gasoline engine for the new Opel Insignia. 

The 2.0 liter turbo delivers 191 kW/260 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 11.5 l/100 km, extra-urban 7.0 l/100 km, combined 8.6 l/100 km; 197 g/km CO2). The 2.0 liter, four-cylinder unit comes in combination with the completely new eight-speed automatic transmission, which shifts smoothly, and a highly sophisticated all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring – a unique feature in the midsize segment. On this high-tech all-wheel drive system, two multi-plate clutches replace a conventional rear axle differential and can accelerate the wheels individually in a split-second depending on the driving situation.


The propulsion offering is rounded off by the new six-speed manual transmission for the popular 1.6 liter diesel engines with outputs of 81 kW/110 hp (NEDC fuel consumption Insignia Grand Sport: urban 4.6 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.6 l/100 km, combined 4.0 l/100 km; 105 g/km CO2) and 100 kW/136 hp (NEDC fuel consumption  Insignia Grand Sport: urban 5.1 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.9 l/100 km, combined 4.3 l/100 km; 114 g/km CO2). This new combination of friction-optimized manual transmission and refined 1.6 CDTI with 81 kW/110 hp results in average fuel savings in the WLTP driving cycle of ten percent compared to the outgoing model.


In addition, Opel will offer the refined 2.0 liter diesel with 125 kW/170 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm (NEDC fuel consumption  Insignia Grand Sport: urban 6.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.3 l/100 km, combined 5.2 l/100 km; 136 g/km CO2).

Inspired by the Opel Monza concept, the prominent grille and the sculpted headlight design add to the feeling of sophistication. The car’s stance is also emphasized by a long wheelbase. The signature ‘blade’ styling hallmark starts in the front door and sweeps towards the rear helps carry the eye from front to back. The chrome window blade dynamically flows into the LED tail lamps and gives the Commodore Sportwagon an even more athletic appearance. The silver roof rails help stretch the car, make it look lower and emphasize the high-quality design.

Easy loader: Tailgate with an extra kick

Not just sleek and sexy, the next-gen Sportwagon is also practical with 1,640 litres of boot volume.
In order to make loading as easy as possible, the tailgate can be opened with a ‘kick’ – without touching the car. In combination with ‘keyless open’ tech, a simple small kicking motion under the rear bumper is enough to open the tailgate (a vehicle silhouette projected onto the ground shows the correct area). A further kicking motion under the bumper will close the tailgate. The clever system can detect any obstruction and stops the mechanism in case of emergency. In addition, for practicability, the height of the opening can be programmed, in case the car is in a garage. Furthermore, the tailgate can still be opened by a switch on the driver’s side of the car, a button at the rear or via the key’s remote control.

In order to increase loading space the new Sportwagon comes with optional 40/20/40 foldable rear seats enabling even more flexible loading space configurations. The rear-seat bank can be folded down by simply pushing a button located in the luggage compartment.

The upcoming Holden Sportwagon will celebrate its world premiere in Opel guise at the Geneva Motor Show on March 7, and will go on sale in Australia in 2018.

Holden has today revealed first details of the all-new, next-generation Commodore ahead of its Australian launch in early 2018.

Australia’s first look under the bonnet of the cutting-edge new Commodore reveals a car that will set new benchmarks in its segment for technology, style, practicality and driving dynamics.

Headlined by the V6 flagship model, the first ever imported Commodore will honour the legendary nameplate by being the most technologically-advanced Holden ever. With a cutting-edge all-wheel-drive system channeling 230 kilowatts and 370 Newton metres to the road, combined with adaptive suspension technology, a company-first nine-speed automatic transmission and torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, the next-generation Commodore is set to cement the iconic nameplate’s reputation for class-leading driving dynamics and on-road refinement.

Based on General Motor’s new ‘E2’ global architecture, engineered in Germany and shared with the Opel Insignia, the new Commodore has also been co-developed under the expert and watchful eye of Holden’s Australian engineers to ensure the all-new Commodore continues a four-decade tradition of setting new benchmarks.  

“Holden has been engaged in this program from the outset to ensure the next-generation Commodore lives up to its legendary nameplate,” said Jeremy Tassone, Holden’s Engineering Group Manager for Vehicle Development.

“Although we are remain in the early stages of the Holden development process, this is an absolutely world-class car. We’ve taken a precision-engineered German car and endowed it with Holden DNA. It drives like a Commodore should.

“We’ve had our Holden engineers engaged in this global program from the outset and we’re continuing to do extensive tuning and development, racking up thousands of kilometers, at our Lang Lang proving ground in Victoria to ensure it’s got that Holden magic.

“Of course, it helps that the underlying platform is absolutely world class! This global vehicle program, led by Opel in Germany, has produced a phenomenal base for us to work from. The genuinely cutting-edge all-wheel-drive system using active torque vectoring provides incredible traction and handling finesse. The key is what is dubbed the ‘Twinster’ rear drive module. Essentially, the traditional rear differential has been replaced with two individual clutches that not only save weight and improve packaging but provides virtually instantaneous active distribution of torque to the required wheel.

“The overall system monitors inputs from vehicle sensors 100 times per second and constantly adjusts accordingly, it’s extraordinary.”

The V6 engine with the all-wheel-drive system is a combination that the Holden team drove into the global vehicle program because we know our customers and this performance option is important to them. While it may not be built here, we’ll deliver a Commodore that our customers will love in 2018,” said Mr Tassone.    

Commodore’s evolution reflects the transformation of the Holden brand and company as it moves to full-line importer of vehicles. But just like Commodore, Holden will remain a powerhouse of the industry and of the local motoring landscape.

Opel Statement on Federal Ministry of Transport Report




Opel welcomes the clarity provided by the report of the German government. The report confirms that our tested cars do not have any devices that recognize whether a vehicle is undergoing an exhaust Emissions Test. The report from the UK government, published yesterday, also proves this.

This is in line with our expectation as we always stated that Opel does not have any devices that recognize whether a vehicle is undergoing an exhaust emissions test. Our software was never designed to cheat or deceive. We meet applicable emissions standards.

Both reports suggest the well-known and well-understood differences between the performance of vehicles in the current lab-based emissions test, which is in urgent need of reform, and in road test conditions. The introduction of RDE testing next year begins to address these differences, although there is work to be done to address boundary conditions relevant to that testing.

Opel is actively engaged in the discussion on RDE. We strongly believe that the industry has to regain trust by increasing the transparency with customers and authorities; and we have taken definitive steps in this direction already last year. As announced on December 15, 2015 and explained in more detail on March 29, 2016, Opel will start an initiative to improve NOx emissions of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) diesel applications in new vehicles in August. Our offensive also includes a voluntary customer satisfaction field action that will involve Euro 6 SCR vehicles that are already on the road in Europe. This activity will start in June 2016.



This is a voluntary and first early intermediate step towards RDE. Our voluntary action is aligned with the German Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA).

An elongated, elegant silhouette, state-of-the-art technology and extensive standard equipment – in one word: Cascada. With the large convertible, Opel offers a spacious four-seater with a high-quality soft-top otherwise only seen in selected premium brand vehicles. It features superior acoustic and thermal insulation for first-class, all-season driving comfort. The Opel Cascada is a seductive whirlwind with its top down and a quiet Gran Turismo when the top is up. It is a year-round cabriolet thanks to its sophisticated soft-top that opens in just 17 seconds while driving at speeds of up to 50 km/h. And now Opel gives the Cascada the brand-new two-liter turbo diesel engine recently introduced in the Insignia and Zafira Tourer, as well as the three new colors True Blue, Rocky Coast and Coconut. The new 125 kW/170 hp four-cylinder unit with 400 Nm torque meets all the important demands on modern diesel engines and replaces the 121 kW/165 hp engine.

Compared to its predecessor, the new powerhouse boasts three percent more power and 14 percent more torque, yet has even more economical consumption. With the new two-liter turbo diesel under the hood and six-speed manual transmission, the open-air cruiser consumes just 4.9 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle and emits 129 g/km CO2. Thus, the Euro 6 - 2.0 CDTI boasts improvements of six percent. The powerful engine is a perfect fit to the comfortable and lively Cascada: the Opel convertible accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 218 km/h. It makes the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 9.3 seconds – seven-tenths faster than with the predecessor engine. The elegant convertible with the new 2.0 CDTI engine is available from 30,500 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

“The Opel Cascada is a mid-size cabriolet with premium features and quality for an extremely attractive price. With the new engine that is part of our extensive powertrain offensive, cabriolet fans now get an engine that sets standards in this class in terms of refinement, power development and consumption,” says Peter Christian Küspert, Vice President Sales and Aftersales at Opel Group.

Highest efficiency for low consumption

Clean: New 2.0 CDTI Turbo diesel with 125 kW/170 hp and just 4.9 liters consumption.
The engineers managed to achieve the efficiency improvements by redesigning the combustion chamber, optimizing the re-profiled intake ports and looking to a new fuel injection system with 2,000 bar and up to 10 injections per cylinder cycle. These measures not only improve the efficiency of the engine, the improved fuel atomization also benefits refinement. Impressive maximum torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. For the first time the VGT (variable geometry turbine) turbocharger features an electrical actuator instead of a vacuum actuator resulting in 20 percent faster boost response and even more driving fun. The exceptionally compact packaging of the turbocharger and the intercooler also minimizes the air volume between the turbocharger and the engine, further contributing to an especially fast boost pressure build up. For durability, the turbocharger is water-cooled and has an oil filter fitted at the oil inlet point to help further reduce wear in the bearing system.

Impressive: Maximum torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm.

Smooth running for pure cabriolet feeling

A consistent improvement in NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics under all operating conditions was a key requirement for the new engine right from the outset of its design. Architectural improvements focused on two high noise emitting areas: the top and bottom of the engine. A new aluminum cylinder head design, including the addition of a decoupled, plastic cam cover with isolated fixings and a sealing gasket, improves noise attenuation. At the bottom of the engine, a new balancer shaft module is fitted, made of high pressure die-cast aluminum. It houses two counter-rotating shafts which offset up to 83 percent of secondary order engine vibrations. As a result of all these and numerous other design features, the new 2.0 CDTI unit emits less noise than its predecessor throughout its operating range, and with 74 decibels at idle it is even three decibels quieter than before. This takes the open-air driving fun in the Opel Cascada to new heights.

Clean running with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

The new 2.0 CDTI runs almost as clean as a gasoline engine with Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. BlueInjection is an after-treatment which removes nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the engine’s exhaust gases. Tiny quantities of AdBlue®, a harmless fluid consisting of urea and water, are injected into the exhaust gas flow ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH3), which is absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the passing exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to harmless nitrogen and water vapor in a chemical reaction with the ammonia. The AdBlue solution, available at filling stations and Opel dealerships, is stored in a tank, which can be topped up as required via a nozzle adjacent to the vehicle’s fuel filler cap.

OnStar: The all-round carefree package for the Opel Cascada

Ultra-modern technology is not only under the Opel Cascada’s hood: from late summer, the mid-size convertible will also be available with the personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar. The built-in 4G LTE connection enables mobile data speeds up to 10 times faster than with 3G technologies. The system offers increased responsiveness and can support simultaneous voice and data connections. Opel OnStar raises in-vehicle communications and on-board entertainment capabilities to a new level. Thanks to the powerful Wi-Fi hotspot, up to seven mobile devices can be connected to the system simultaneously.

Teamwork 500 million vehicles built by GM including 68 million built by Opel – that means countless skillful movement by the workers on the production line and countless stories of customers and their cars.
General Motors today celebrated an impressive production milestone: since the company’s founding in 1908, more than 500 million vehicles have been delivered to customers around the world – no other automaker can look back at such production numbers. Opel, one of the group’s tradition-rich brands, played a large role in this: the German carmaker built 68 million cars, most of them at the main plant in Rüsselsheim, where this achievement was now celebrated.

Loyal customers were invited to dinner with the Board in the historic ambience of the Opel Classic Car garage. And Anna Katharina Dionysius from Riedstadt got a special surprise during a visit to the vehicle production hall: the long-term Opel customer picked up the Opel Zafira Tourer she had recently ordered directly from the assembly line – as an anniversary gift handed over by Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.
Every dark cloud has a silver lining: Opel driver Anna Katharina Dionysius survived a serious accident almost without a scratch thanks to the safety technology of her Astra. Today, Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann presented her with a new Zafira Tourer as a sign of gratitude for her brand loyalty.
Anna Katharina Dionysius had an accident with her Astra a few days prior to the event. The car was badly damaged but she only suffered minor injuries. She took to Facebook to praise her “red hero” and thanked the Opel engineers for their “great work”. The Zafira Tourer with the whisper-quiet two-liter diesel engine that pumps out 125 kW/170 hp and meets the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard is new on the market.

Dr. Neumann: “For me this anniversary is more than just an impressive number, because 500 million cars stand for 500 million customers, for their stories and experiences. We say ‘thank you’ 500 million times to these customers for their loyalty and trust, because it is a privilege for us to play such an important role in their lives.”

GM celebrated the 500 million milestone around the globe. Practically simultaneously to the celebrations in Rüsselsheim, loyal customers were also invited to the group’s production facilities in North and South America, Asia, Africa and China. Anna Katharina Dionysius is one of five customers to receive a car free of charge to mark this production milestone. “During 2015, we expect to sell more than 1,000 new vehicles per hour, 24 hours per day,” said Barra. “This adds up to nearly 10 million vehicles, the most in our history. I look at this extraordinary volume as 10 million opportunities to prove what kind of company we are and to say thank you.” said GM CEO Mary Barra.

Mary Barra continued to point out the many game-changing innovations GM has brought to the automotive industry including the first ever V-8 engine, the first automatic transmission, the first automotive crash test dummies and the first airbags in a production vehicle.

Opel started building cars in 1899 and has been part of GM since 1929 – and many milestones pave the way of this shared journey, as do legendary cars like the Kadett, Rekord, GT, Manta and Kapitän. Through it all, Opel has always stood for technological innovations that offer customers high utility value and benefits – for example in 1989 when the Rüsselsheim automaker was the first brand to equip its cars with a catalytic converter as standard. The guiding principle “We make technology that is otherwise only available in the luxury class affordable for everyone” remains a cornerstone of the brand’s philosophy to this day. True to this tradition, another highlight is coming up: Opel OnStar. The personal service and mobility assistant will become available this year, turning the vehicle into a mobile internet hotspot.

!NEW! Only 94 g/km CO2: Opel Astra cleaner and more frugal than ever before

Opel Bestseller with ultra-modern powertrain only uses 3.6 l/100 km


Opel Astra with the 81 kW/110 hp 1.6 CDTI now only emits 94 grams of CO2 per kilometer (down 3g/km) – with the 100 kW/136 hp 1.6 CDTI it only emits 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer (down 5g/km).
Continuous improvement is the motto: launched in spring 2014, the Opel Astra with the new generation 1.6-liter turbo diesel had already earned Germany’s A+ energy efficiency label and has become the most efficient compact class car in Opel’s history. The further optimized Astra with the 81 kW/110 hp 1.6 CDTI now only emits 94 grams of CO2 per kilometer (vs 97 grams so far), which is equivalent to 3.6 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (0.1 liter less than before) in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle). As for the improved 100 kW/136 hp output version, it now only emits 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer (5 grams less than before) and needs 3.7 liters of diesel (0.2 liter less) in the NEDC, thus seeing even the more powerful Astra whisper diesel crack the 100-gram-barrier. And to make things even better – the new ‘eco’ Astra 1.6 CDTI, which will be available shortly, will cost the same as the current version. This showcases how committed Opel is in its current powertrain offensive, the most impressive in its history. In just 18 months, Opel has completely renewed its diesel portfolio. The reworked and even more frugal Astra 1.6 CDTI models complete the trio around the new, 82 gram Corsa 1.3 CDTI ‘eco champion’ and the new Insignia 2.0 CDTI, which will both also hit the dealerships in the upcoming weeks.

“Our new powertrains demonstrate how modern mobility works. CO2 reduction without making compromises on performance and comfort is the motto,” said Charles Klein, Vice President Vehicle Engineering Europe. “We now offer extremely efficient turbo diesels in every vehicle class – from our new Corsa with phenomenal 82 g/km of CO2 to the Astra and the midsize flagship, the Insignia.”

CO2 reduction without compromising driving pleasure and comfort

Just a few months after introducing the new generation 1.6 CDTI engine into the Astra, the Opel engineers have continued working on perfecting it, so that it now delivers up to five percent less emissions and consumption while maintaining performance and comfort. New low-friction components have been used for both the chassis and the bodywork: the optimized drive shafts or the especially low-rolling-resistance tires are just two examples. In addition, the Aero Package including a lowered chassis and active radiator shutters  helps reduce aerodynamic drag - The active shutters open and close automatically depending on engine temperature and speed. Furthermore, the engine specialists worked meticulously on improving the combustion process even further. The result of all these measures: The Astra with the new generation 1.6-liter whisper diesel and 81 kW/110 hp now emits three grams less CO2 per kilometer whereas the 100 kW/136 hp version can boast an impressive reduction of five grams per kilometer while driving performance was maintained for both output levels. The more powerful version propels the Astra sedan to 100 km/h in 10.1 seconds from a standing start and achieves maximum speed of 205 km/h.

Quiet by nature: The Opel Astra with the new generation 1.6-liter whisper diesel can be ordered with either 81 kW/110 hp or 100 kW/136 hp. 
Uncompromising comfort also continues to be key in all ‘eco Astras’ including the five-door, sedan and Sport Tourer variants. From AGR (German Healthy Back Campaign) stamped ergonomic front seats right up to Opel’s modern IntelliLink infotainment system – numerous optional equipment features are available to create a pleasant, relaxing and fully connected trip. In addition, Opel offers safety relevant premium technologies such as the Opel Eye front camera with Following Distance Indication, Forward Collision Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Departure Warning or the rearview camera, Park Assist with parking spot recognition and audiovisual parking assistance, Side Blind Spot Alert and the safety lighting system AFL+.


Combined with interior spaciousness and loading volume of up to 1,550 liters for the station wagon, this makes the Astra the perfect car for work or leisure time.

From Opel Corsa eco-champion to the dynamic diesel in Opel Insignia – Outstanding in each segment

Elsewhere, the most recent reductions in CO2 emissions are further proof of Opel’s commitment to bringing new generation, efficient diesel engines to their customers. These weeks, Opel simultaneously introduces the reworked 94 and 99 gram Astra 1.6 CDTI models in the compact segment, a new 70 kW/95 hp Corsa model that only emits 82 grams of CO2 in the small car segment, and a new 125 kW/170 hp 2.0 CDTI engine in the  midsize Insignia.

Frugal flagship: The four-door Opel Insignia only needs 4.3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle, which is equivalent to 114 grams of CO2 per kilometer. 

Frugal and powerful: The new 125 kW/170 hp 2.0 CDTI engine with 400 Nm of torque impresses with a low level of consumption and a significant reduction of emission while delivering more than enough power. 

The new 125 kW/170 hp and 400 Nm Insignia 2.0 CDTI also impresses with low consumption and a considerable reduction of emissions while delivering an impressive punch, more than enough torque and outstanding refinement. The new powerhouse boasts around four percent more power and 14 percent more torque. The Insignia with the new engine reaches a maximum speed of 225 km/h – an increase of 5 km/h. The sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.0 seconds – almost half a second quicker than its predecessor. The four-door model only needs between 4.3 and 4.5 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle, which is equivalent to only 114 g/km of CO2.


Eco-champion: The new three-door Opel Corsa ecoFlex 1.3 CDTI 70 kW/95 hp  with Start/Stop technology fitted as standard, braking energy recuperation and low-rolling-resistance tires in combination with the new Easytronic 3.0 transmission can reduce CO2 emissions to 82 grams per kilometer. 
The three-door Corsa 1.3 CDTI 70 kW/95 hp ecoFlex with Start/Stop technology fitted as standard, braking energy recuperation and low-rolling-resistance tires is the true eco-champion. Equipped with the new Easytronic 3.0 transmission it can reduce CO2 emissions to 82 grams per kilometer. Fuel consumption is down to exemplary 3.1 liters per 100 kilometers for the combined cycle making the new Corsa the most economical Opel presently on the market and the most economical diesel available.

Frugal: Opel ECOTEC 1.3 CDTI four-cylinder with 70 kW/95 hp and maximum torque of 190 Nm at 1,750 – 3,500 rpm.

Custom specified Opel Insignia Sports Tourers Delivered to An Garda Siochana
Coming to a rear view mirror near you soon could be one of 20 new high performance Opel Insignia Sports Tourers that have just been delivered to An Garda Siochana. These custom specified Insignia’s feature a 2.0 CDTi BiTurbo diesel engine with an output of 195hp that ensures rapid engine response from low revs, making them ideal for high performance driving and policing.


Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland said; “Opel have a vast experience in developing cars that provide surefooted performance and with the specifications that we have provided with these Insignia Sports Tourers, they are ideally equipped to support the safe and efficient patrolling of our Irish Motorways.”


The vehicles, which are wrapped in the traditional Traffic Corps livery, were unveiled at a press event with the Taoiseach and An Garda Siochana Traffic Corps last week at their headquarters in the Phoenix Park and will be provided to Garda traffic units around the country.


With a long history of supplying Opel’s to An Garda Siochana, Opel’s Fleet Department worked in close partnership with the team in the Transport Department to deliver the perfect specification to cater for their unique requirements for policing.

Opel ECOTEC 2.0 CDTI BiTurbo 

The 2.0 CDTi BiTurbo diesel engine is equipped with two turbos, one larger than the other. They operate separately or together as required to ensure quick engine response from low revs: 400Nm of torque is developed from only 1750Nm (with 350Nm from only 1500rpm). The smaller turbo uses an efficient water-cooled intercooler to minimise turbo lag, while the larger turbo uses a larger air-cooled intercooler at higher engine speeds. Compared to single-turbo Insignia 2.0 CDTi engines, the BiTurbo has higher performance pistons, cylinder head and gasket and camshafts to deal with the extra power. Despite all this performance-focussed technology, it is extremely fuel-efficient and boasts combined CO2 emissions of only 129g/km.



Suspension

Independent front and rear suspension has been fitted to these Insignia’s with lowered, uprated sports suspension along with FlexRide, Opel’s Adaptive Chassis System. FlexRide uses multiple sensors and instantly adjusts the dampers to suit the driving conditions to optimise ride and handling in all situations. Pressing the “Sport” button stiffens the dampers, quickens the throttle response and gives more direct feeling to the steering for higher speed driving situations. FlexRide works with the ESP, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and traction control systems to optimise driving safety.

Brakes
High performance brakes are fitted, with the larger diameter front discs being ventilated and gaining 4-piston brake callipers with larger pads for superior braking ability. Manual handbrakes replace the normal electric handbrakes for operational effectiveness reasons. Meanwhile the 17-inch alloy wheels maximise air-flow for effective brake cooling.

Interior
Gardaí who will have responsibility of these Insignia’s will travel in the utmost comfort as Opel’s award winning Ergonomic Sports Seats have been fitted. These feature electrically adjustable lumbar support and height adjustment which are perfect for spending long periods in the car while also providing support during high speed manoeuvers. A leather sports steering wheel with integrated cruise control and speed limiter buttons and audio controls improve steering feel and performance while minimising time with hands off-wheel. A 4.2” colour dashboard displays trip computer information in a clear easy-to-see format, with the info pages also controllable via steering wheel buttons. Climate control, remote central locking with deadlocks as well as privacy glass on all rear windows for operational reasons, of course.

Safety
Of course the Insignia is fitted with the highest safety features with front, side and curtain airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners. Active safety front head restraints ensure minimal impact to the neck in the unlikely event of an incident.  Meanwhile LED Daytime running lights and front fog-lights have been fitted to enhance the already highly visible livery.

Extremely quiet, high power, high torque all combined with low consumption and emissions – these are the key elements of the new generation Opel diesels for Mokka and Insignia. The successful models can now be ordered with the new high-tech four-cylinder engines. The 100 kW/136 hp 1.6 CDTI in the Mokka will deliver a lot of driving fun for an entry-level price of euro 24,685. The Insignia sedan will be available with a 125 kW/170 hp two-liter turbo from euro 29,895 (RRP including VAT in Germany). The smooth and refined engines are another important step in the roll-out of Opel’s new powertrain portfolio and set standards in efficiency and environmental friendliness. Their emissions already meet the Euro 6 standards that will be compulsory from September and they are therefore almost as clean as comparable gasoline engines.

Whisper diesel: 1.6 CDTI for Opel Mokka, 2.0 CDTI for flagship Insignia

The Opel Mokka can currently boast the fastest growth on the European car market. The modern chassis and propulsion technologies are obviously key to the success of the sub-compact SUV. The latest development is the new all-aluminum four-cylinder engine, which will replace the 1.7 CDTI. The new high-tech engine gives more power and torque – up six hp and 20 Nm, respectively – from a smaller displacement, as well as significantly lower fuel consumption.

All-New Opel ECOTEC 1.6 CDTI

The lively 1.6 CDTI in the 100 kW/136 hp version reaches 85 hp per liter – unrivalled in its displacement class – and delivers torque of 320 Nm. Acceleration and elasticity figures promise lots of driving fun: the Mokka 1.6 CDTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, and makes the transition from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 9.9 seconds. Maximum speed is 191 km/h. The whisper diesel is also extremely economical and kinder to the environment: with Opel’s precise six-speed manual transmission and standard Start/Stop system, the 1.6 CDTI Mokka consumes just 4.1 l/100 km over the combined cycle while emitting only 109 g/km CO2. This is almost 0.5 l/100 km less fuel and 11 g/km less CO2 than the predecessor 1.7 liter version. This new diesel engine complies with the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard, making it almost as clean as a comparable gasoline unit.

The same can also be said for the extremely quiet two-liter turbo diesel in the Insignia. Impressive torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, and maximum power of 125 kW/170 hp is accessed at just 3,750 rpm. The new powerhouse boasts around four percent more power and 14 percent more torque while maintaining exactly the same consumption as it predecessor and meeting Euro 6 emission standards. The Insignia with the new engine reaches a maximum speed of 225 km/h – an increase of 5 km/h. Powerplant: 2.0 CDTI with 125 kW/170 hp and 400 Nm for Opel Insignia

Pure high-tech: For strong performance and small ecological footprint

Two of the main contributors to the strong and environmentally friendly performance of both engines are the VGT (variable geometry turbine) turbocharger and the high-pressure, common-rail fuel injection system. Injectors capable of supplying fuel at 2,000 bar and of up to 10 injection pulses per cylinder cycle ensure high power, improved fuel atomization and efficient mixing with the air intake charge. The VGT in the Insignia features an electrical actuator for the variable aspect turbine, giving a 20 percent faster boost response than a vacuum actuator. Thus guaranteeing even more diesel fun.

Drivers will be able to enjoy the new engines without any regrets because Opel’s new generation whisper diesels deliver outstanding emission levels comparable to those of a gasoline engine. The big diesel weakness, the emission of nitrogen oxides, is history. The 1.6 CDTI in the Mokka uses a Lean NOx Trap (LNT), an exhaust after-treatment system upstream of the diesel particulate filter that captures and removes nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gases without the use of additives.

Smooth running: Diesel power with turbine-like refinement

Apart from increasing performance and efficiency, the improvement of running smoothness was a key requirement for the new engines right from the outset of their design. The engineers implemented several measures during construction and fine-tuning to reduce the noise levels and vibrations of the engine thus improving refinement. Architectural improvements focused on two main noise-emitting areas: the top and bottom of the engine and ranged from a decoupled, cam cover on the aluminum cylinder head over a newly designed oil sump to a new balancer shaft module for the two-liter diesel.

And the latest generation 1.6 CDTI previously known from the Opel Astra and Meriva MPV has not been nicknamed “whisper diesel” for nothing.

Opel Insignia sedan, liftback and Sports Tourer with the new two-liter turbo diesel are available with a six-speed gearbox and front or four-wheel drive.
