Opel Shark Cult spreads to All-New Astra Sports Tourer

  • Shark shoal: All-New Opel Astra Sports Tourer is home to several marine predators
  • Cult origins: Shark tradition began with little boy’s bright idea
  • Shark as symbol: Opel designers show their passion for tiniest details
All-New Opel Astra Sports Tourer

Real Opel fans immediately begin the search whenever the brand launches a new model. Not for the numerous advanced technologies included in the standard equipment, but for the marine lifeform hiding in and around the car: the shark. Miniature avatars of the creature that sits atop the ocean food chain have amused Opel drivers and passengers for years – as now in the new Astra Sports Tourer.

While the interior of most Opel models, such as the award-winning Mokka-e and Corsa-e, somewhere conceals one shark, the newest generation of the compact estate hosts several – one near the front, another towards the rear and others in more unusual places (but even Opel sharks must get their energy from somewhere). Exploring the new Astra Sports Tourer in search of sharks – for example as plug-in hybrid (WLTP combined fuel consumption1: 1.2-1.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions 27-25 g/km) – is almost as much fun as driving it.

“Little sharks hidden in the new Opel Astra and Sports Tourer show our designers’ love for the tiniest of details”, said Design Director Karim Giordimaina. “Our customers can feel this passion and in the meantime Opel’s sharks have become a cult. This also demonstrates how approachable the Opel brand is.”

From idea to cult: Opel sharks story began in 2004

But how do miniature sharks come to be hiding in Opel cars? One Sunday afternoon in 2004, designer Dietmar Finger was at home working on a sketch for a new Corsa. He was designing the ordinary outer panel of the glove box, which is mostly invisible because it is hidden by the closed passenger door. However, when the glove box is opened, this panel must ensure stability – which it does with ribs integrated in the plastic surface. Finger was designing the ribs when his son looked at the sketch and said, “Why don’t you just draw a shark?” “Why not!” thought the designer and gave the ribs their characteristic shape!

Opel Corsa Chief Designer at the time, Niels Loeb, was immediately sold on the idea. Shark in the glove box went into series production and the “Opel Shark Story” began. Next came Opel Zafira, where Karim Giordimaina, then in charge of the interior design, hid three sharks in the compact van’s cockpit. More followed, first in the Opel ADAM, then the Astra and other cars such as the Crossland and the Grandland SUV flagship.

In the meantime, every interior chief designer has placed a shark or two inside a new Opel model.  Wxact location always remains secret, even from Design top management. Fish therefore stay hidden until the launch, which makes for an interesting search for shark lovers both inside and outside the company.

Shark cult is set to continue with future Opel models. Exactly where they will be hiding in the car remains a mystery, but customers can already look forward to having fun looking for them.

[1] Values were determined using the more realistic WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure) test method which replaces the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test procedure. Opel Quality offensive in full swing

  • All-time high: Launch quality improved by 25 per cent in just one year
  • Ambitious goal: Number 1 in quality among volume automakers
  • Analysis results: New methods introduced to prevent faults
  • Currently: Top scores for Opel models in ADAC breakdown statistics and TÜV Report

Opel Corsa

Opel quality for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) is at an all-time high. Within the past twelve months, for example, launch quality of new cars has been increased by 25 per cent. This value results from the manufacturer's internally defined production standards as well as from customer feedback within the first year after purchase. Most recently launched Opel Corsa and Opel Mokka models demonstrate first-class production quality right from the start – regardless of whether they are efficient combustion engines or battery-electric vehicles.

Opel Corsa-e

There are good reasons for this quality improvement: Opel has set itself the goal of zero faults. To achieve this, the Rüsselsheim automaker has also introduced new analysis methods that have a predictive effect in production. Such forecasting systems recognise when parameters change in such a way that they could lead to possible errors in production and intervene preventively. Result: no faulty parts are produced in the first place, production continues undisturbed, and quality is consistently high.

Opel Mokka GS Line

“At Opel and throughout Stellantis Group, we have set ourselves ambitious quality targets. We want to become the number 1 among volume manufacturers. Everywhere where faults are eliminated, we increase quality, increase customer satisfaction and at the same time also reduce our costs,” says Opel CEO.

Opel Mokka-e

At the German sites in Rüsselsheim and Eisenach, the switch to the latest Group's platform has also led to further improvements. Uniform platform strategy and the reduction of unnecessary complexity are important factors for the high quality and reliability of the vehicles. At Opel's headquarters, series production of the all-new Astra generation has just begun. Here, the five-door Opel Astra and soon also Opel Astra Sports Tourer estate will roll off the production line with German precision.

All-New Opel Astra: Assembly in Rüsselsheim

All versions of the Opel Grandland are manufactured in Eisenach to the highest quality standards. This is also confirmed by the latest TÜV report, in which Opel's SUV flagship was ranked an excellent 11th overall out of all 128 models inspected. In addition, according to the 2022 ADAC breakdown statistics, Opel models in various market segments, from Grandland and Crossland to ADAM, stand out as reliable used cars.

All versions of the Opel Grandland are manufactured in Eisenach

Opel engineers are also focused on further improving long-term quality. To this end, cooperation with suppliers has been intensified. Engineers speak of “robustness” here when defining running times and standards for parts and components. In addition to the well-known customer satisfaction studies, the quality guardians from Rüsselsheim also evaluate reviews and suggestions in forums and other social media channels. Furthermore, Opel dealers are involved as early as possible to learn from them, from the customer's point of view, where further improvements are possible. All feedback is taken seriously and seen as an opportunity to improve quality.

World Premiere IAA: Opel First Carmaker to Present Electric Rally Car

  • ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup: world’s first rally brand cup for electric cars
  • For customer sport: New battery electric rally car based on Opel Corsa-e
  • Good cooperation: Opel and ADAC continue their successful partnership
  • Tradition: Opel has won seven European and one world rally championship

New Opel Corsa-e: Electric Rally Car

Opel is the first automobile manufacturer in the world to offer a battery-electric vehicle for customer rally sport. Electric competition car is based on the Opel Corsa-e, which is already available to order, and will make its world premiere at the IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show (public days September 12-22). In 2020 Opel and the ADAC will start the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup, the first rally brand cup for electric cars in the world.

With the new series, Opel and the ADAC are continuing their successful partnership. In the past years, the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup has been the perfect entry ticket to rallying for around 100 young drivers from 18 countries. Fastest also displayed their talents internationally in the ADAC Opel Junior Rallye team. Opel juniors won the European championship four times in succession (2015 to 2018) with the Opel ADAM R2. New Opel Corsa-e now replaces Opel ADAM on the rally stages. New competition car produces 100 kW (136 hp) and develops 260 Nm of torque from a standstill.

“Opel Corsa-e is the electric car for everyone – fully suited to everyday use and absolutely affordable, attributes that equally apply to motor sport. New Opel Corsa is also fun to drive and particularly dynamic. Using the production car as the basis, we are the first carmaker in the world to have developed an electric rally car” said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller.

Hermann Tomczyk, President ADAC Sport, added: “With the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup we are bringing electric drive for the first time to mainstream sport and especially to young-driver support. The innovative concept and the cooperation with Groupe PSA opens new possibilities for us, especially in the support of young drivers. I am certain that the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup will point the way ahead for motor sport far beyond the borders of Germany.”

Initially the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup will take place during rounds of the German Rally Championship and other selected events. Series is scheduled to begin in summer 2020. At least ten qualifying rounds through 2021 will form a so-called “Super Season”. A pyramid of support for young drivers is part of the concept, which also foresees a new edition of the successful ADAC Opel Rallye Academy, established in 2016, as the first level. At the time, more than 1,000 youngsters showed their interest in the unique “rally casting”, which led straight to the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup for the most talented participants. This successful concept will be continued and expanded into the top international echelon of the sport.

In the next step after graduating from the academy and the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup, the best young drivers will progress to the European Junior Rally Championship with the new Opel Corsa R2. Integration of Opel in Groupe PSA offers additional possibilities for top talents: sister-brand Peugeot competes with powerful FIA R5 machines and Citroën even with world rally cars – excellent opportunities for rising to the very highest level of international rally sport.

“Opel has traditionally strong connections with rallying” said Lohscheller. “We can look back with pride on numerous successes, including seven European championship titles as well as the World Rally Championship in 1982 with Walter Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer in the Opel Ascona 400. Now we are moving forward with electric drive and fans will be amazed by the performance of our e-cup rally car”.

Development of the Opel Corsa-e Rally in Rüsselsheim continues at a rapid pace. Fifteen cars are planned for the 2020/2021 ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup. Price for customer cars from Opel Motorsport will be significantly less than €50,000 (net).

The connection of Opel OnStar to the internet and the navigation calculation now happen in real time – even the short breaks when uploading a selected route are now a thing of the past.

Easy to use: The new touchscreen even reacts to gentle touches.
“Opel is in an exemplary position when it comes to vehicle connectivity. This is just as true for the Insignia as it is for the new Astra or the IntelliLink pioneer, the ADAM. Our flagship now comes with Opel OnStar and the ultra-modern Navi 900 IntelliLink system. This will enable us to integrate the smartphone quickly and straightforwardly via Apple CarPlay and shortly via Android Auto. This is mobile connectivity that makes sense and is fun,” said Peter Christian Küspert, Vice President Sales & Aftersales Opel Group.

Outstanding individual mobility: Smartphone integration for the flagship

The latest generation of the Navi 900 IntelliLink system ensures excellent and individual entertainment. The system, compatible with Apple iPhone 5 (or higher) brings the individual smartphone world into the Insignia both quickly and comprehensively: Drivers can access Apple CarPlay maps and news services as soon as connectivity has been established. Furthermore, additional apps can be controlled via Siri eyes free voice control or the 8 inch touchscreen on the center stack.

Clever: The latest generation of the Navi 900 IntelliLink system brings the individual smartphone world into the Opel Insignia both quickly and comprehensively.
Each system builds off of the features smartphone users rely on most. Apple CarPlay takes the iPhone features you would want to access while driving and puts them on the vehicle’s display in a smart, simple manner. That allows drivers to make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. Apple CarPlay supported apps include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and compatible third party apps. A full list of those apps can be found at apple.com/ios/carplay.

Faster: Navigation calculation in the Opel Insignia with the latest generation Navi 900 IntelliLink now happens in real time.
The latest generation Navi 900 IntelliLink also offers the possibility of individually configuring the homepage and specifying favorites. 60 memory spaces are available for favorite radio stations, contacts, addresses, telephone numbers, artists or playlists. In order to keep distraction to a minimum, the most important IntelliLink information is displayed in the instrument panel between the speedometer and rev counter. Furthermore, the driver and passenger can watch videos on the 8 inch monitor in the center console via a USB connection – but for safety reasons this is obviously only possible when the car is stationary.

Practical: IntelliLink information can be displayed in the instrument panel between the speedometer and rev counter.
Navi 900 IntelliLink comes as standard in the Sport and INNOVATION trim levels. For the Edition and Selection trim levels, it is available for €1,200 and €1,335 respectively (RRP including VAT in Germany). Digital Audio Broadcasting DAB+ increases program choice and sound quality for €210, thus rounding off the entertainment and sound package.

Ultra-modern architecture: Insignia become Wi-Fi Hotspot with Opel OnStar

Furthermore, the Insignia comes with Opel OnStar as standard from the Edition trim level. The integrated 4G/LTE architecture turns Opel’s flagship into a powerful mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot. A special external antenna maximizes connectivity and delivers a stable internet connection for up to seven devices.

The extensive services are the heart and soul of the personal connectivity and service assistant. They range from around the clock Automatic Crash Response to Stolen Vehicle and Roadside Assistance, right up to Vehicle Diagnostics. All of these services are available at the push of a button – thanks to the system inherent SIM card, a smartphone is not required. Elsewhere a smartphone is needed for the MyOpel smartphone app. It enables OnStar subscribers to request help when away from the vehicle, to lock or unlock the car doors or to access important vehicle data.

!NEW! Opel at the RETTmobil 2015: Opel Mokka SUV now a Lifesaver

15th exhibition for rescue and mobility: Opel present with wide range of emergency vehicles

Mokka, Insignia, Vivaro and Movano – four cars, four concepts, one goal: to save lives. From May 6 - 8, the automaker will show how powerful series-produced passenger cars and vans can, with the help of certified conversion partners, be converted into efficient emergency vehicles for the fire brigade for example. The Opel stand in Fulda will be located in Hall 5 (stand number 505). Furthermore, Opel’s partner Siebrecht will present disabled transport vehicles of different sizes and in various price categories at their outdoor stand (number 53).

Opel emergency vehicles for fire brigade and DLRG (German Life Saving Society)

The Mokka emergency vehicle with a 100 kW/136 hp 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive (consumption 4.7-4.5 l/100 km and CO2 of 124-119 g/km in the combined cycle) is latest addition to Opel’s lifesaver family. At RETTmobil, it will be present as an agile utility vehicle for technical accident assistance. The all-wheel drive Mokka, converted by Opel Special Vehicles and Sortimo is a real eye-catcher with its LED special signaling system, the LED front flashers and rear warning lights along with its blazing red foliation. Furthermore, the Mokka has a preliminary set-up for analogue and digital networks including a combined roof antenna. The huge advantage is that the compact, agile and all-terrain Mokka can take technical equipment such as hydraulic shears and spreaders to accident sites that cannot be reached by vans or trucks. The Mokka also carries an emergency backpack so that its crew can also provide vital first aid.

The Insignia Country Tourer fire brigade command vehicle with all-wheel drive, new whisper diesel along with AFL+ (Adaptive Forward Lighting) and AGR-certified (Campaign for Healthier Backs) premium seats and a specific Bott tail-end conversion will accompany the Mokka to Fulda. A Movano crew cab that has been converted into a fire engine by Meinicke Fahrzeugservice completes Opel’s firefighting trio at the RETTmobil. Elsewhere, a Vivaro Combi transformed into a crew car for the DLRG will also be present. Wagner Technik are responsible for converting the nine-seater and fitting it with a special signaling system, LED beacons and working lights, an additional battery along with lashing rails and Euroboxes in the hold.

Opel also offer ADAM, Astra Sports Tourer, Insignia Sports Tourer and Zafira Tourer-based emergency vehicles ex works.

!NEW! Opel at Techno Classica 2015 – Design as a Brand Value

  • Exciting: Ten rare Opel models at vintage car show in Essen
  • Innovative: Opel Design Studio first of its kind in Europe
  • Ground-breaking: Style icon Experimental GT celebrates 50th birthday
  • Opel design philosophy: “Sculptural artistry meets German precision“

Exciting curves. Opel Experimental GT was shown on a slightly slanted platform at the IAA in 1965 to emphasize the two-seater’s dynamic shape.

Opel showcases ten design icons and concept cars at this year’s Techno Classica in Essen (15.-19.04.). The rare models on display range from the Experimental GT, the Diplomat A coupé and the Genève Study to the GTC Concept, and – as an example of Opel’s current design language – the new Corsa. The exhibit demonstrates that exciting design is one of Opel’s core brand values, a message underlined back in 1964, when Opel opened the first design studio owned by a European automaker. It was there that, for the first time, professionally trained designers and modelers – not just design draftsmen and model makers as had been the norm until then – began creating and developing the design of future vehicles. Opel welcomes all the friends of the brand, as well as all those interested in automotive history, to its 650 m2 stand in Hall 2 at Essen.

Originally, the Opel Genéve Concept that made its premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in 1975 was to be powered by a Wankel engine. But the oil crisis in the early 1970s and the engine’s high fuel consumption halted this project.

The beginnings of automobile design

Opel’s classic collection comprises about 500 cars that embody more than 150 years of the brand’s engineering expertise and embrace various style and design eras. Opel entered the automotive world in 1899 with the Patent Motor Car “System Lutzmann”. While horse-drawn carriages initially served as the starting point for motor car engineering for all manufacturers, immediately after the turn of the century the first approaches to developing specific automotive design characteristics quickly took shape.

Opel engineers were already experimenting with the streamlined shape back then and Opel models from this era often carried the sobriquet “Torpedo”, highlighting their streamlined frontal design. The influence of such design on the shape of future cars was continually growing.

Pioneer of forms. The Design Studio opened in 1964, called N10 internally, set standards for progressive work and quickly turned into a hothouse of creativity for European designers.
In 1964, Rüsselsheim-based Opel was the first European automaker to open its own design center, still called “styling studios” back then. It accommodated the first design organization owned by an automaker outside North America. Just one year after operations began, the first product from the team of Opel designers and modelers made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1965. Their stunning Opel Experimental GT was the first true concept car from a European automaker. Hardly anyone had expected such a sporty concept car from Opel. And even less expected was that the Rüsselsheim carmaker would bring such a trend-setting vision to the road: in 1968, Opel presented the production-ready GT sports car. Today, the Opel GT is one of the most coveted Opel cars on the classic car market.

Showpiece. Opel Experimental GT was first shown at the IAA in 1965, causing quite a sensation.
The premium-class models from Rüsselsheim’s KAD series are now just as sought after as the Opel GT. Within this model range, the 1965 Diplomat A Coupé occupies a very special place. Like the Experimental GT, it is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and it is a true rarity. Just 347 of these coupés, based on the Diplomat V8 sedan, were built by the Osnabrück coachbuilders Karmann between 1964 and 1968.

The Diplomat A V8 Coupé was not just luxurious, it was one of the fastest grand touring cars of its time
Opel again caused a sensation with another study at the 1969 IAA in Frankfurt. The Opel CD (Coupé Diplomat) thrilled industry experts with its striking, tapered form. The fiberglass body was based on a platform about 30 centimeters shorter than the Diplomat B, together with a wheelbase of 2.5 meters. For demonstration purposes, the glass dome that served as the cabin roof could be folded back as a whole with the windshield. The lattice model displayed at the Techno Classica gives an insight into what was at the time highly innovative technology in the Opel CD.

In 1975 another breath-taking concept study made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show – the aptly named Genève Concept. Designers in Advanced Engineering again created a two-seat sports coupé, this time adopting a mid-engine principle. The shape was even more tapered and streamlined and it was, of course, again fitted with pop-up headlamps.

Opel has continued presenting exciting studies in the small-car segment. At the Geneva Motor Show in 1982, the Corsa Spider, a small two-seat roadster penned by Opel designer Hideo Kodama, was unveiled. It was the forerunner of a completely new small-car range below the Kadett, which debuted in the fall of 1982 as the Corsa. With sales totaling more than 12.4 million units, this model range is today one of the most popular in the small car segment.

With the Opel Insignia study in 2003 and above all with the unveiling of the Opel GTC Concept in 2007, a new design era began at Opel, summed up by the phrase: “Sculptural artistry meets German precision”. Sculpted body surfacing and 3D headlamps are signature styling motifs of the studies created by Chief Designer Mark Adams.

As the latest example of this new design language, the fifth generation Opel Corsa will be displayed at the Rüsselsheim automaker’s stand. The new Corsa shares similarities with the successful lifestyle-oriented Opel ADAM, such as its low grille. And with its wing-shaped headlamps and that signature Opel, ‘blade’ body side, it represents the current, further evolution of Opel design.

“The Opel KARL is the perfect car for price-conscious customers looking to combine everyday suitability with comfort and modern technologies. Customers will be able to purchase an attractive five-door car for as little as 9,500 euros in Germany. Our German dealers alone have already ordered 15,000 cars, even though the KARL will not be at dealerships until June. So the KARL is really off to a flying start,” said Dr. Neumann at the Opel press conference in Geneva. “Our new-generation Corsa just came to market a few weeks ago and we have already sold over 130,000 cars. Now we’re putting the icing on the cake with the new Corsa OPC: it is a high-performance car for driving enthusiasts looking for passion and excitement – and very affordable at prices starting just slightly above 24,000 euros. With KARL, ADAM and the new Corsa we now have the strongest small-car offer in our history and the youngest portfolio on the market.”

World premiere Opel KARL: Smallest star with great potential

Namesakes: Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann was proud to celebrate the world premiere of the new Opel KARL at the International Motor Show in Geneva.
The all-new KARL is a fully-fledged Opel with space for up to five occupants – plus two large beverage crates in the luggage compartment – for an entry-level price of just 9,500 euros (in Germany). For more comfort and safety, the 3.68-meter long five-door car can also be equipped with high-quality assistance systems that have only been available in considerably more expensive vehicle classes to date. These include the Opel Eye front camera with integrated Lane Departure Warning, power steering with City Mode, Park Assist and automatic cruise control with speed limiter.

World premiere Opel Corsa OPC: Nürburgring-tested and suitable for everyday use

Sporting and emotional spearhead: Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann described the new Corsa OPC with its 207 hp and top speed of 230 km/h as the icing on the cake of Opel's small car portfolio.
The new Corsa OPC that was developed on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife is now available for only 24,395 euros. 152 kW/207 hp are just waiting to be let loose. The 1.6-liter turbo engine delivers maximum torque of 280 Nm with overboost – pure torque power. A short ratio six-speed gearbox sends OPC power to the front wheels. Thus equipped, Opel‘s new small athlete sprints from zero to 100 in less than seven seconds and reaches up to 230 km/h top speed. In light of such impressive driving performance, the athlete’s fuel consumption remains very low at 7.5 liters in the combined cycle. And innovative Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology effortlessly merges uncompromising sportiness with a high level of comfort.

Europe premiere Opel OnStar: Begins in August in 13 markets

European premiere: Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann presented Opel OnStar, the new mobility and service assistant, at the Geneva Motor Show.
Opel takes the next step forward in automotive connectivity by introducing Opel OnStar. OnStar is already the leading global provider of connected safety and security solutions, value-added mobility services and advanced information technology in the automobile industry. Opel will bring the system to the European market in 2015. Starting this August, Opel OnStar will be rolled out across the company’s passenger car range. The 13 European premiere markets are Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, with additional markets following later. Today, OnStar already connects around seven million customers in the U.S.A., Canada, China and Mexico and offers features such as a 4G LTE connection that turns the car into a powerful, mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. In addition, it offers an automatic connection to emergency services and smartphone remote control.

High-speed connectivity: Opel OnStar including the high-speed Wi-Fi hotspot will be rolled out across Opel's passenger car range from August 2015.

“Connectivity is one of Opel’s unique selling points as seen with our award-winning IntelliLink infotainment system. Opel OnStar, for which we have already received a Connected Car Award, is further proof that we want to deliver trendsetting innovations in connectivity to a wider audience,” said Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “Opel OnStar is a ground-breaking technology: Driving will be simply much more relaxed. The direct dialogue with our customers will create stronger ties with the brand. All this will convince even more new buyers that Opel is the right choice.”
