Opel Shark Cult spreads to All-New Astra Sports Tourer

  • Shark shoal: All-New Opel Astra Sports Tourer is home to several marine predators
  • Cult origins: Shark tradition began with little boy’s bright idea
  • Shark as symbol: Opel designers show their passion for tiniest details
All-New Opel Astra Sports Tourer

Real Opel fans immediately begin the search whenever the brand launches a new model. Not for the numerous advanced technologies included in the standard equipment, but for the marine lifeform hiding in and around the car: the shark. Miniature avatars of the creature that sits atop the ocean food chain have amused Opel drivers and passengers for years – as now in the new Astra Sports Tourer.

While the interior of most Opel models, such as the award-winning Mokka-e and Corsa-e, somewhere conceals one shark, the newest generation of the compact estate hosts several – one near the front, another towards the rear and others in more unusual places (but even Opel sharks must get their energy from somewhere). Exploring the new Astra Sports Tourer in search of sharks – for example as plug-in hybrid (WLTP combined fuel consumption1: 1.2-1.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions 27-25 g/km) – is almost as much fun as driving it.

“Little sharks hidden in the new Opel Astra and Sports Tourer show our designers’ love for the tiniest of details”, said Design Director Karim Giordimaina. “Our customers can feel this passion and in the meantime Opel’s sharks have become a cult. This also demonstrates how approachable the Opel brand is.”

Opel Design Director Karim Giordimaina

From idea to cult: Opel sharks story began in 2004

But how do miniature sharks come to be hiding in Opel cars? One Sunday afternoon in 2004, designer Dietmar Finger was at home working on a sketch for a new Corsa. He was designing the ordinary outer panel of the glove box, which is mostly invisible because it is hidden by the closed passenger door. However, when the glove box is opened, this panel must ensure stability – which it does with ribs integrated in the plastic surface. Finger was designing the ribs when his son looked at the sketch and said, “Why don’t you just draw a shark?” “Why not!” thought the designer and gave the ribs their characteristic shape!

Opel Corsa Chief Designer at the time, Niels Loeb, was immediately sold on the idea. Shark in the glove box went into series production and the “Opel Shark Story” began. Next came Opel Zafira, where Karim Giordimaina, then in charge of the interior design, hid three sharks in the compact van’s cockpit. More followed, first in the Opel ADAM, then the Astra and other cars such as the Crossland and the Grandland SUV flagship.

In the meantime, every interior chief designer has placed a shark or two inside a new Opel model.  Wxact location always remains secret, even from Design top management. Fish therefore stay hidden until the launch, which makes for an interesting search for shark lovers both inside and outside the company.

Shark cult is set to continue with future Opel models. Exactly where they will be hiding in the car remains a mystery, but customers can already look forward to having fun looking for them.

Opel creates Eye-Catching New Colours for All-New Opel Astra and Opel Mokka

  • Powerful: Design statements like all-new Opel Astra and Opel Mokka call for vivid colours
  • Launch colour: All-New Astra’s “Kult Yellow” mixes Opel tradition with current trends
  • Sustainability in paint shop: “3-wet” paint process further reduces emissions

With the all-new Opel Astra and the Opel Mokka, the German carmaker has not only developed two extremely exciting new cars, but also created two startling new paint colours.

For such powerful design statements as the award-winning Mokka and the new Astra, Opel decided on vivid, eye-catching new colours: green for the Mokka and yellow for the Astra.

“Colours for automobiles must not only satisfy the customer, they must also match the car’s size and shape”, explains Nicole Heidt, Assistant Chief Designer, Colour and Trim. “A compact-class model like the Astra is best suited by sophisticated mica or metallic colours that are also highly popular among the customers in that market segment.”

Right at the start of the new Astra’s development, Opel Marketing team informed Design that they wanted the sixth generation of the best-selling Astra to be available in yellow, which has a long-standing tradition as the colour of the brand.

As usual with an all-new colour, Nicole Heidt began the creation process with research into colour trends using professional tools. Also adding her own experience, she started to think about creating a new darker tone of yellow for the new Astra. Nicole then took her ideas into Design’s own paint shop where – as if creating a new meal – she personally designed the “recipe” for the new colour.

Using a 200-millilitre beaker and a few grams of various automotive refinishing paints from a leading supplier, she mixed the “ingredients” together until the result matched her idea.

Next, the designer prepared a “mood board” – a collage of images – and colour swatches to present the new colour to Design management and Marketing. Following their approval, Nicole then made samples for the supplier of the paint to the Rüsselsheim plant, whose final product must match the design idea and colour swatches as closely as possible for serial production.

Detailed process: Development of new colours can take up to four years

Process of developing a new colour for a new model can take up to four years, and the finalised new paint must be “ready to spray” by robots 12 months before the start of production. “Yellow we chose as the launch colour for the new Astra at the start of the process has proved bang on target”, says Nicole Heidt. “Such colours are trending strongly now.”

In the case of the Mokka, a smaller Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with a younger customer profile than the new Astra’s, Opel sought a bold, sporty new colour. Nicole Heidt’s research showed that green tones were trending strongly. “Green is also the perfect colour for an emissions-free, battery electric vehicle such as the Mokka-e”, she adds.

“3-wet” paint process: Annual CO2 emissions cut by around 2,200 tonnes

Electrified vehicles such as the battery-electric Opel Mokka-e or the new Astra as plug-in hybrid are just two ways that the German car manufacturer contributes to sustainable mobility. Paintwork has its own role to play too. For example, the new Astra’s “Kult Yellow” is applied at the Rüsselsheim production plant where emissions from the paint shop have been significantly reduced. Facility currently uses the “3-wet” paint method, which removes one complete drying step from the process. Compared with conventional paint processes, this cuts annual CO2 emissions by around 2,200 tonnes while still providing high levels of protection from corrosion and stone chipping. In addition, annual water consumption is lowered by around 1,800 cubic metres.

To mark this anniversary, Opel Classic has a special gift for all fans and friends of the brand: they can now immerse themselves in the company's history in the new "160 Years of Opel" theme tour at opel.com/opelclassic. From the comfort of their couch at home, users can take a virtual tour back to the beginnings of the company and enjoy numerous highlights from 160 years of Opel engineering. Opel Classic takes them on a varied tour from the first sewing machines and bicycles "made in Rüsselsheim" to the current "Golden Steering Wheel" title holder Opel Mokka-e 1 – around the clock, 365 days a year.

"New anniversary tour was developed with great attention to detail. Team first had to meticulously archive and document all the exhibits and precisely align them for filming so that online visitors can view the vehicles from all sides. Bilingual '160 Years of Opel' tour offers completely new Opel perspectives to all those interested. It's really worth clicking on and taking the tour," says the new Opel Classic Director Leif Rohwedder, looking forward to numerous online visitors.

"160 Years of Opel": Virtual tour from the beginning to today

New 360-degree tour takes visitors virtually into the "hallowed halls" of the Opel Classic Collection in Rüsselsheim. Here, the brand with the Blitz shelters a veritable treasure trove of 600 historic vehicles and studies as well as 300 other exhibits ranging from Opel sewing machines to aircraft engines. The highlights of the "160 Years of Opel" tour include a look at the beginnings in the 1860s as well as the following decades. By clicking on the yellow info points, Opel Classic reveals important information about the selected exhibits – short and sweet, right to the point.

"Wanderjahre Adam Opels" (Adam Opel's wandering years) are discussed as well as historically valuable exhibits such as the "Quintuplet" – a five-seat bicycle – on which the five sons of the company founder had themselves photographed for publicity purposes at the end of the 19th century. The pioneer among Opel automobiles can also be seen for the first time in a virtual tour: the Patentmotorwagen "System Lutzmann" from 1899, which marked the beginning of car production in Rüsselsheim.

Then interested visitors can continue on various paths through the historic halls. They will not only encounter numerous Opel icons and bestsellers, but also innovative record-breaking vehicles such as the Opel Elektro GT.

Five decades ago, this car demonstrated at the Hockenheimring what is possible with zero emissions. Tour through 160 years of Opel history leads to further groundbreaking developments such as the first fully electric vehicle suitable for everyday use, the Opel Ampera, and the battery-electric Opel Mokka-e. Current e-car with the Blitz won the "Golden Steering Wheel 2021"1 with its convincing driving performance as well as its very own style and rounds off the journey through time in the Opel halls.

"160 Years of Opel" tour now complements the Opel Classic online tours that were successfully launched in 2021. Here, visitors can also explore and enjoy the subjects of "Alternative Drives", "Rally Racing", "Roaring Twenties" and "Mobility for Millions".

  • Corsa was UK’s best-selling car in 2021 and February 2022 YTD
  • Customer ordering opens from 6 April with deliveries from Summer

Vauxhall Corsa-e Ultimate

Vauxhall has updated both the Corsa and Mokka model ranges by introducing its new simplified version line-up as well as enhanced pricing making two of its most popular models more appealing than ever.  With orders open from early April, the revised Corsa model range will start from £17,340 OTR and the Mokka from £22,265 OTR, with first customer deliveries expected from August.

The new range comprises of three versions: Design, GS Line and Ultimate:

Design – features Vauxhall’s ‘Bold and Pure’ styling and driver assistance tech

GS Line – combines striking sports styling, inside and out, with advanced comfort and convenience technology

Ultimate – combines an evolution of the GS Line styling with even more premium technologies

New three version line-up is designed to make it easier than ever for customers to choose the right version for them.

Easy to shop – simplified range structure comes with simplified price walks between versions making it easier to understand the value of each version

Strong specification - from entry level, including visual elements of Vauxhall’s new ‘Bold and Pure’ design language, including alloy wheels, classing-leading driver assistance technology and the new ‘Vauxhall Vizor’ brand face on the Mokka and Mokka-e.

Innovative technology at an affordable price – a number of versions have been substantially reduced in price (by up to £3,290) meaning that premium technology is even more accessible than before.

Both the Corsa and Mokka will now be available in Design, GS Line, and Ultimate trim specification, while the 100% electric Corsa-e and Mokka-e will be available in sporty GS Line and Ultimate variants.

New trim line-up has also enabled Vauxhall to streamline the overall number of Corsa and Mokka variants available to customers, making it more transparent to understand the differences between vehicles. The Corsa model range has been streamlined from 15 models to eight, while the Corsa-e has been reduced from three models to two. Mokka sees the version line-up reduced from 16 to 11, while Mokka-e will go from four to two.

Adam Wood, Marketing Director, Vauxhall, said: “We’ve introduced our new simplified trim structure to the Corsa and Mokka vehicle ranges. In doing so, we’ve not only made it easier for buyers to understand the key differences between various trims, but the models are now even better value thanks to a number of pricing enhancements.  The top-spec Corsa Ultimate has been reduced by more than £3,000 meaning that premium innovative technology is now even more accessible on one of Britain’s most popular cars.”

Vauxhall Corsa & Corsa-e

All-electric Vauxhall Corsa-e made up nearly one-in-seven of all Corsas sold last year and is now available in sporty GS Line and Ultimate variants. GS Line replaces previous SRi Premium variants, while Ultimate replaces previous Elite Premium models. Streamlining from previously three variants to two reflects the market demand for the Corsa-e, with customers preferring higher specification trim models.

Vauxhall Corsa GS Line

Corsa-e models will now come standard with Vauxhall’s e-toggle shifter already available on the Mokka-e, replacing the previous ‘cobra’ shifter. The new control allows drivers to select between reverse, neutral and drive, while a Brake (B) button allows drivers to increase energy recovery via the regenerative braking technology.

Vauxhall Corsa-e Ultimate: Interior with e-toggle shifter

Both GS Line and Ultimate Corsa-e models retain identical equipment and technology levels to their outgoing trims, with prices remaining the same. Corsa-e GS Line prices start £27,055 OTR after the current Government Plug-in Car Grant, while Ultimate models start from £29,660.

Importantly, all Corsa-e and Mokka-e models remain eligible for the £1,500 Government Plug-in Car Grant.

Vauxhall Corsa-e features a 50 kWh battery connected to a 136 PS (100 kW) electric motor and is capable of up to up to 222 miles on a single charge under WLTP testing. Supporting up to 100 kW rapid charging, an 80% charge takes just 30 minutes.

As part of its electric vehicle strategy, Vauxhall has worked to ensure Corsa-e variants are more cost efficient to own in the long run over petrol and diesel variants of the Corsa – helping owners offset the higher initial purchase price.

Corsa was the UK’s best-selling new car in 2021 with more than 40,000 models sold. From April, Corsa Design models replace previous SE Edition variants and feature the same equipment and technology, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Speed Sign Recognition, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 7-inch infotainment screen. Prices for Corsa Design variants start from £17,340 OTR, resulting in a £500 price reduction over the outgoing model.

Sporty GS Line replaces previous SRi Edition models and come with new 17-inch black wheels that replace previous 17-inch bi-colour wheels. GS Line features include climate control, rear parking sensors and black exterior styling.  New for GS Line models will also be Vauxhall’s efficient 1.2-litre (75PS) three-cylinder petrol engine, previously unavailable on SRi Edition models. This entry level powertrain means that the GS Line Corsa starts from £19,490 OTR.  Other GS Line versions see a £1,000 price reduction compared to before.

Corsa Ultimate variants remain identical to the current Ultimate range, however, the pricing has been significantly enhanced so it now starts from £23,375 OTR – a £3,150 saving over the previous line-up.  The Ultimate comes with premium features such as adaptive cruise control, lane positioning assist, IntelliLux Adaptive LED Matrix lights, front parking sensors, panoramic rear-view camera, keyless entry, Alcantara trim and heated seats and steering wheel.

Vauxhall Mokka & Mokka-e

Vauxhall Mokka Ultimate

Vauxhall Mokka was the first model to feature Vauxhall’s new ‘Vizor’ front end and Pure Panel interior – features since seen on all new Vauxhall models, including the All-New Astra. The 100% electric Mokka-e is available in GS Line and in Ultimate models, with both models priced equally to their outgoing variants.

Vauxhall Mokka Ultimate

As with Corsa-e, Vauxhall has worked to ensure the Mokka-e range achieves total cost of ownership savings for owners over its petrol and diesel counterparts.

Petrol and diesel Mokka range starts from entry level Design which is identical to outgoing SE Edition variants, but now also available with a 1.2-litre 130PS 6-speed manual and a 1.2-litre 130PS 8-speed automatic. With more choice of engines, the Mokka Design range starts from £22,265 OTR – identical to the outgoing SE Edition.  Standard features on the entry level Mokka include lane departure warning, lane keep assist, speed sign recognition, auto emergency braking, cruise control, automatic lights & wipers, high beam assist, LED headlights & tail lights, Pure Panel twin 7-inch screens and Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity.

GS Line models replace outgoing SRi Premium variants, with the equipment level reflecting customer demand in the sector. GS Line features include the striking two-tone styling with 18-inch bi-colour alloy wheels, black roof and mirrors and sports bodykit.  Climate control, keyless start and power folding door mirrors, rear parking sensors and the upgraded Pure Panel with 10-inch driver and 12-inch infotainment screens.  Mokka GS Line versions now start from £24,640 OTR – £1,500 lower than before.

Anything but ordinary - that's the Opel Mokka . Battery-electric Opel Mokka-e was not awarded the “Golden Steering Wheel 2021” 1 for nothing . The glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix light turns night into day for all road users. What is also special is that in addition to the mounted wheels, there is a second set of 18-inch light-alloy wheels with summer tires in a 5-twin-spoke design. And the 96 kW/130 hp 1.2-litre all-aluminium three-cylinder turbo petrol direct injection engine with 8-speed automatic transmission and 230 Newton meters of maximum torque (fuel consumption according to WLTP 2 : combined 6.0-5.9 l/100 km, 136-133 g/km CO2 ) .

Feel-good Comfort as Standard: Opel Mokka-e in Winter Weather

  • Heat pump included: Set cosy temperature in compact e-car via myOpel app
  • More heat sources: Optional heated seats and heated steering wheel
  • Perfect for the mountains: Dynamic, powerful and with energy recuperation

Opel Mokka-e

Head into snow-covered mountains with an electric car? Is that a good idea? Absolutely: compact Opel Mokka-e is dynamic, powerful and offers plenty of cosy comfort, even in frosty weather. It’s the right electric car for a trip into the snow of the Allgäu or the Alps. With the excitingly styled Opel Mokka-e, driver and passengers not only turn heads wherever they go, they are also always on the road emissions-free. While the snowstorm rages outside, it is always pleasantly warm inside for everyone. Because Opel Mokka-e has numerous heating systems on board.

(Pre)heating made easy: Via app and heat pump

It starts even before the journey: if you want to climb straight into a comfortably preheated car and drive off in winter, the battery-electric Opel Mokka-e is the right choice. Owners of the e‑car can use the myOpel app to programme pre-heating of interior from comfort of their couch before setting off. Within a few minutes, car cabin not only reaches a comfortable temperature, but the windows are also ice-free in frosty conditions.

At the same time, efficient energy management is necessary, especially in winter, to keep Opel Mokka-e’s energy consumption low and the range high. To do this, simply switch on the pre-temperature control while Opel e-car is connected to the external power supply via a household socket, a wallbox or a fast charger. This way, the energy required for heating comes from the external power supply and the full electric range of up to 338 kilometres (according to WLTP 1) is available at the start. Thanks to the heat pump fitted as standard, waste and lost heat generated can be used to heat the interior without having to switch on a conventional heating, which would compromise range.

On-the-road comfort and safety: Heating technologies in Opel Mokka-e

Opel Mokka-e: Heated comfort seats

You can simply sit back and enjoy drive. Multi-adjustable, optionally heated comfort seats are a feel-good, health and safety feature all in one. Thanks to the optional seat heating for driver and front passenger, the winter jacket can be taken off even before the journey begins. This means that no thick clothing restricts freedom of movement and the seat belt can be fitted snugly to the body without any slack – this is the only way it can develop its full protective effect in the event of a collision. Safety is also enhanced by heated steering wheel, which warms the fingers in just a few seconds. This means the driver no longer needs to wear annoying gloves and always has everything firmly under control. And standard footwell heating in the rear ensures that passengers’ feet stay warm during the journey.

Use the descent: Generate energy with braking recuperation system

In addition to the feel-good arguments offered by the Opel Mokka-e, there is also responsible driving pleasure with the compact electric model – especially in the mountains. Agility and road holding of the Opel Mokka-e are additional benefits in hilly terrain. Battery is installed in the underbody for a particularly low centre of gravity. So the car seems to corner as if on rails. The “Golden Steering Wheel 2021” 2 winner is powered by a 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor. While internal combustion engine models first have to get back up to speed out of tight hairpin bends, electric SUV has 260 Nm of torque at its disposal even from a standstill – guaranteeing driving fun on serpentine roads.

Opel Mokka-e is powered by 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor

Opel Mokka-e also distinguished by its talents for energy recuperation and deceleration. Electric motor becomes a generator and converts the kinetic energy of descent into electricity. If the driver shifts into drive mode B, recuperation and deceleration is increased. 50 kWh battery is recharged at zero cost – and energy saved for the next ascent.

With all these technologies, Opel Mokka-e drivers and passengers can set off into the snow-covered mountains in comfort, efficiently and emissions-free, with lots of driving fun before they hit the slopes.

[1] Range determined according to WLTP test procedure methodology (R (EC) No. 715/2007, R (EU) No. 2017/1151). The actual range can vary under everyday conditions and depends on various factors, in particular on personal driving style, route characteristics, outside temperature, use of heating and air conditioning and thermal preconditioning.
