All-New Opel Astra and Co.: Multimedia Pleasure for Everyone

  • Modern and connected: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible multimedia systems in all Opel passenger cars
  • Internet for cars: Opel a pioneer in the small car segment in 2012 with IntelliLink
  • When the radio went on tour: 1938 Admiral the first Opel with a car radio
  • In honour of “wireless”: World Radio Day on February 13

All-New Opel Astra: Pure Panel cockpit

Blues, rock, pop, hip-hop – music styles that could hardly be more different and yet have one thing in common: they inspire people and trigger emotions. And where do most people – by far – listen to music? In the car! Today, state-of-the-art multimedia systems, such as in the Opel Astra, winner of the “Golden Steering Wheel 2022” 1, ensure optimal sound and entertainment. They are already standard in many Opel models and ensure top connectivity, coming with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as numerous personalisation options and state-of-the-art navigation. But when did the radio make its debut in Opel vehicles? And what pioneering developments has the German automobile manufacturer helped advance? In honour of “World Radio Day” on February 13 we take a look back.

Enjoying music en route: Opel introduces radio in Opel Admiral and Kapitän

World Radio Day has been celebrated since 2012 – in reminiscence of the founding of United Nations Radio on February 13, 1946. However, “wireless” entertainment was born at the beginning of the 20th century; in Germany, the first radio station went into operation in 1923. At the time, Fritz von Opel, a grandson of company founder Adam Opel, was also a radio pioneer involved in setting up the “Südwestdeutscher Rundfunkdienst”.

Almost at the same time, first car radio was introduced in the USA. Opel offered a car radio for the first time in 1938, as an accessory for Opel Admiral, initially mounted under dashboard near the floor. Just one year later, for introduction of Opel Kapitän, Opel offered an optional Blaupunkt radio integrated in the dashboard.

1938: Opel Admiral with car radio

Sound no longer came from footwell, but from the middle of the car, so that the passengers could enjoy hits such as “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland.

Innovations for everyone: VHF, window antenna and radios made by Opel

After the end of the Second World War and during the subsequent years of the “German economic miracle”, the further development of car radios and reception picked up speed. VHF was introduced in Europe in 1949. Radios in Opel models featured this pioneering reception as early as the first half of the 1950s. Opel's credo has always been to make innovations accessible to everyone. So, at the end of the 1960s, Opel vehicles offered stereo reception. In the mid-1970s, carmaker even launched its own range of Opel-branded radios in standard, comfort and luxury versions –  latter with a cassette deck.

1971: Opel Diplomat with radio and window antenna

Beginning in 1971, Opel offered a new window antenna as an option, initially in top models Opel Admiral and Diplomat. According to the company at time, the reception was “equal to, in many cases even superior to, that of conventional rod antennas”. Windscreen acted as an antenna mount, the antenna itself running in a barely perceptible ring shape around the perimeter. This meant that owners no longer needed to worry about damage to the more exposed rod antenna.

In 1977 all Opel radios then acquired traffic information – a technological innovation that made driving a lot more relaxed and time-saving, since the driver's attention was drawn directly to the announcements on the radio (even if listening to cassettes).

Radio reception improved still further in the following decade. In 1981 Opel launched its first car radio with automatic volume control; and in 1988, RDS (Radio Data System) was introduced, enabling car radios to display additional information on the current programme or traffic reports.

CARIN: Leap from radio to navigation system with route guidance

Whereas drivers had previously been dependent on printed road maps and traffic reports on the radio to plan their journeys, in 1995 Opel was first car manufacturer to present a mid-range model with a fully integrated navigation system in Opel Vectra. “Car Information and Navigation System (CARIN)”, developed by Philips, provided passengers with visual and acoustic route information. Map material was stored on CD, while the position of the vehicle was determined by an interaction of technologies such as GPS, satellite signal reception and ABS wheel sensors.

1995: Opel Vectra with Car Information and Navigation System (CARIN)

With the second generation “Carin 440” in the Opel Astra, navigation made its way into the compact class in 1998.

At the same time, the developers worked on continuously improving the sound quality. Thanks to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), noise and similar interferences have become a thing of the past. Digital radio reception enables crystal-clear listening to a larger number of programmes and is now standard in all Opel passenger cars as well as in the majority of commercial vehicles.

From IntelliLink to Multimedia: Internet arrives in Opel cars

In 2012, the age of the Internet began in Opel vehicles. Brand introduced the new IntelliLink infotainment system in its Opel ADAM and thus became a pioneer in the small car segment. IntelliLink integrated Apple iOS and Android smartphone functions. AUTO BILD and COMPUTER BILD gave the “Connected Car Award” to the pioneering Opel system. In 2014, Apple and Google presented Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for the first time; and in the following year, Opel presented the second generation of IntelliLink – now compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

2014: Opel ADAM with IntelliLink – Compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Today, Opel models feature state-of-the-art multimedia systems equipped with digital DAB+ reception. Hands-free phone calls, operation via touchscreen or voice command as well as wireless smartphone integration are just some of the countless possibilities that the current models from Opel Mokka to Opel Grandland and Opel Astra make available. Such technologies can be operated intuitively with the latest generation digital user interface, Opel Pure Panel cockpit.

Opel Mokka: Pure Panel cockpit

Foundation for all this was once laid by the radio, which is why Opel is celebrating “World Radio Day” on February 13.

Best-selling small car: Opel Corsa is Number 1 in Germany

  • Opel Corsa most popular small car in June and the first six months of the year
  • Opel Corsa-e best-selling electric small car in June and year to date
  • Opel Mokka very strong among compact SUVs

Opel Corsa

Whether purely electric or with a combustion engine - according to the latest figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, Opel Corsa remains number 1 in the small car segment on the important German home market. With almost 5,800 new registrations, bestseller from Rüsselsheim once again took the lead in its segment in June. Opel Corsa secured a segment market share of over 20 percent. And with more than 25,000 new registrations in the first half of the year, the Corsa also leads the previous year's ranking for small cars.

Opel Corsa-e

Opel Corsa-e also leads the sales ranking in the small electric car segment. With 1,500 new registrations in June and more than 6,500 new registrations so far this year, almost every fourth newly registered small electric car was a Corsa.

Opel Mokka-e

“Opel Corsa is celebrating its 40th birthday this year. Our latest generation seamlessly follows on from the successes of its predecessors with a total of over 14 million vehicles built. We are particularly pleased with the success of the battery-electric Opel Corsa-e. With all-new Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer, two more purely electric models will follow next year, which will give us further momentum," says Opel Germany boss Andreas Marx.

All-New Opel Astra

In addition to the Opel Corsa, the stylish Opel Mokka continues to enjoy great popularity: compact SUV has held a strong third place in its segment so far this year. In the purely electric variants, Opel Mokka-e , winner of the “Golden Steering Wheel 2021 1 ”, performs even better and is even in second place. Electric Opel Combo-e Life (number 1 in the segment) and Opel Zafira-e Life (number 2 in the segment) also secured further top positions.

Across all model series, Opel achieved a BEV (battery electric vehicle) market share of 7.7 percent in June, improving its market share for the first half of the year to 6.0 percent. Brand with the lightning bolt expects further upswing in the near future – the battery-electric Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer will be rolling out to dealers in the coming year in addition to the plug-in hybrids that can already be ordered.

Opel creates Eye-Catching New Colours for All-New Opel Astra and Opel Mokka

  • Powerful: Design statements like all-new Opel Astra and Opel Mokka call for vivid colours
  • Launch colour: All-New Astra’s “Kult Yellow” mixes Opel tradition with current trends
  • Sustainability in paint shop: “3-wet” paint process further reduces emissions

With the all-new Opel Astra and the Opel Mokka, the German carmaker has not only developed two extremely exciting new cars, but also created two startling new paint colours.

For such powerful design statements as the award-winning Mokka and the new Astra, Opel decided on vivid, eye-catching new colours: green for the Mokka and yellow for the Astra.

“Colours for automobiles must not only satisfy the customer, they must also match the car’s size and shape”, explains Nicole Heidt, Assistant Chief Designer, Colour and Trim. “A compact-class model like the Astra is best suited by sophisticated mica or metallic colours that are also highly popular among the customers in that market segment.”

Right at the start of the new Astra’s development, Opel Marketing team informed Design that they wanted the sixth generation of the best-selling Astra to be available in yellow, which has a long-standing tradition as the colour of the brand.

As usual with an all-new colour, Nicole Heidt began the creation process with research into colour trends using professional tools. Also adding her own experience, she started to think about creating a new darker tone of yellow for the new Astra. Nicole then took her ideas into Design’s own paint shop where – as if creating a new meal – she personally designed the “recipe” for the new colour.

Using a 200-millilitre beaker and a few grams of various automotive refinishing paints from a leading supplier, she mixed the “ingredients” together until the result matched her idea.

Next, the designer prepared a “mood board” – a collage of images – and colour swatches to present the new colour to Design management and Marketing. Following their approval, Nicole then made samples for the supplier of the paint to the Rüsselsheim plant, whose final product must match the design idea and colour swatches as closely as possible for serial production.

Detailed process: Development of new colours can take up to four years

Process of developing a new colour for a new model can take up to four years, and the finalised new paint must be “ready to spray” by robots 12 months before the start of production. “Yellow we chose as the launch colour for the new Astra at the start of the process has proved bang on target”, says Nicole Heidt. “Such colours are trending strongly now.”

In the case of the Mokka, a smaller Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with a younger customer profile than the new Astra’s, Opel sought a bold, sporty new colour. Nicole Heidt’s research showed that green tones were trending strongly. “Green is also the perfect colour for an emissions-free, battery electric vehicle such as the Mokka-e”, she adds.

“3-wet” paint process: Annual CO2 emissions cut by around 2,200 tonnes

Electrified vehicles such as the battery-electric Opel Mokka-e or the new Astra as plug-in hybrid are just two ways that the German car manufacturer contributes to sustainable mobility. Paintwork has its own role to play too. For example, the new Astra’s “Kult Yellow” is applied at the Rüsselsheim production plant where emissions from the paint shop have been significantly reduced. Facility currently uses the “3-wet” paint method, which removes one complete drying step from the process. Compared with conventional paint processes, this cuts annual CO2 emissions by around 2,200 tonnes while still providing high levels of protection from corrosion and stone chipping. In addition, annual water consumption is lowered by around 1,800 cubic metres.

Opel continues to grow in Germany in the new year

  • 6.1 percent market share in January: 9 percent more cars sold compared to 2021
  • 16 months in a row: Opel consistently gaining market share in Germany
  • Over 25 percent: High proportion of electric vehicles in the Opel Corsa and Opel Mokka series

Opel Corsa-e

Opel continues to grow in the important German home market in the new year. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the manufacturer achieved a slightly increased market share of 6.1 percent in January with around 11,200 newly registered passenger cars - that is 9 percent more vehicles sold compared to January 2021. Opel thus has its market share compared to the comparable months in largest European automotive market increased 16 times in a row. Development of battery-electric passenger cars was also positive.

Opel Mokka-e

“After growing significantly last year, we will continue our trend in 2022. But it clearly shows that our models are extremely well received by customers,” says Opel Germany CEO Andreas Marx. “We are particularly pleased about the high proportion of battery-electric vehicles. This also shows that the future of mobility is electric.”

Head of Opel Germany Andreas Marx

Opel Corsa again made a significant contribution to the successful performance . Best-selling small car in Germany in 2020 and 2021 again performed excellently this January with over 4,000 new registrations. More than a quarter of all new registrations were already purely electric Opel Corsa-e . Opel Mokka-e was similarly successful - and here the battery-electric variant also accounts for over 25 percent of Opel Mokka registrations.

Opel with significant market share growth in Germany in 2021

  • 15th month in succession with market share growth in Germany
  • Full year market share up by almost 1.2 percentage points on 2020 to circa 6.2%
  • Opel Corsa best-selling small car in Germany

Opel Corsa-e

Opel closed 2021 with a substantial increase in market share. According to preliminary figures, Opel achieved a market share of circa 6.2 percent for the full year with a total of around 162,000 newly registered cars in its important German home market, the largest automotive market in Europe. This represents an increase of almost 1.2 percentage points compared to 2020.

Despite the challenging environment, Opel continued its upwards trajectory of recent months in December and has now increased its market share for 15 successive months. With almost 15,000 newly registered cars, the Rüsselsheim-based brand achieved a market share of 6.5 percent – almost 1.4 percentage points above the figure for December 2020.

“We are delighted with the strong development in our German home market. We want to continue this trend in 2022. We have an outstanding product plan with a high percentage of electrified vehicles. In addition, customers can look forward to highly attractive newcomers in the Opel Astra, the Astra Sports Tourer and the Grandland,” said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz.

All-New Opel Astra & Astra Sports Tourer

“A big compliment to the dealers who, despite the adverse conditions, played a key role in this development. We can look forward to the New Year with optimism," added Andreas Marx, Head of Opel Germany.

New Opel Grandland

Opel Corsa made a significant contribution to the successful performance. Sixth generation of the best-selling small car was sold almost 50,000 times in Germany alone in 2021. This makes Opel Corsa the most popular small car on the German market over the course of the last 12 months. In November, the Corsa was even the best-selling car in Germany. New Opel Mokka is also a bestseller – according to preliminary figures Opel Mokka took second place in the SUV B segment in December.

New Opel Mokka-e

Ongoing popularity of the battery-electric models Opel Corsa-e (winner of the Golden Steering Wheel 2020) 1 and Opel Mokka-e in December is particularly pleasing. Of the total of 4,900 newly registered Corsa, almost a quarter were electric. Proportion of all-electric Mokka was even higher. Around 30% of customers received a Mokka-e, the winner of the Golden Steering Wheel 2021. 2

Designed in Germany: How All-New Opel Astra Arouses Emotions

  • Bold and pure design turns all-new Opel Astra into brand design statement
  • Precision in every detail conveys highest quality, inside and out
  • All-digital Pure Panel cockpit focuses on essentials

All-new Opel Astra

All-new Opel Astra with its pure and bold design aims to convey high quality in every detail. Sixth Astra generation, which celebrated its world premiere in September, is designed to arouse emotions and achieve the “must-have” effect at first sight. Design and development teams, around 50 per cent of whom are women, set out to make the German carmaker’s new compact model a real “designer piece”, inside and out.

Bold and pure: All-New Astra reinterprets Opel design philosophy

All-new Opel Astra looks dynamic thanks to the pronounced forward rake of the C-pillar

Following Opel Mokka, Crossland and Grandland SUVs, the new Astra also features the Opel Vizor. New face of the brand and the central exterior design element follows the Opel Compass where the vertical and horizontal axes – the sharp crease in the hood and the wing shaped graphic of the daylight running lamps – intersect with the Opel Blitz emblem in the middle. Stretching across the front, making all-new Astra look even wider, Vizor also seamlessly integrates technologies such as the ultra-slim IntelliLux LED Pixel headlamps. Viewed from the side, the next-generation Astra looks especially dynamic thanks to the pronounced forward rake of the C-pillar.

At the rear, the Opel Compass is repeated by the centrally mounted Blitz, the vertical high-mounted brake lamp and the tail lamps (energy-saving LEDs, as is all exterior lighting). Blitz emblem also doubles as the latch for the tailgate.

“German design is for me the simplicity, the pureness and the technical elements in combination”, says Ilka Höbermann. “It is sometimes difficult to keep this pureness and then add the boldness. It's always all about the harmony and the right balance.” Result is a successful mix of clear and emotional styling that makes the all-new Opel Astra stand out from the crowd of compact class models. Characteristic look is underlined by the new metallic paint. “Team developed a super-fresh and modern yellow that adds some juiciness and boldness to the car”, adds the designer.

Cockpit of the future, realised today: All-digital Pure Panel

Right balance for the all-new Opel Astra was particularly important to the Colour and Trim design team, especially for the interior. “We had to think out of the box to find the best solutions for these materials. You have a really high diversity of different colours, textures, graphics and patterns. To bring them all together, this actually the big challenge. It is like a big puzzle. You combine different exciting materials to achieve nice contrast or balance”, explains Ilka Höbermann.

All-digital Pure Panel

Result of this process represents a leap forward in interior design and comfort for the brand. Fully digital cockpit combines two 10-inch widescreen displays and the side air vents for the driver under the horizontally stretched and, depending on the variant, fully glazed surface. Analogue displays are a thing of the past in the all-new Opel Astra. A fully functional, high-tech design that combines style with cutting-edge technologies. Opel Astra drivers and passengers look at the precise glass optics of the Pure Panel and can intuitively operate the new man-machine interface – “visual detox”.

Ultra-modern cockpit is designed to convey an atmosphere in which passengers feel secure. Accents such as the finely crafted controls, reduced to a minimum, and infotainment frames and surfaces in a matt aluminium bring a “big value to the all-new Opel Astra”, says Ilka Höbermann. “They can be just beautiful, they can have a functional aspect and they can even make you smile sometimes.” Every detail – from the Opel Blitz in the centre of the steering wheel to the fabrics and stitching on the AGR-approved ergonomic seats (also available in Alcantara or Nappa leather) – bears the unique signature of Opel's Colour and Trim designers.

New Opel Mokka-e wins “Golden Steering Wheel 2021”

  • Best car under €25,000: Battery-electric Opel Mokka-e takes the top spot
  • Electric car with style: Bold and pure, Opel Mokka-e in tune the times
  • Electric success: Opel Mokka-e follows Opel Corsa-e as “Golden Steering Wheel” winner
  • Winning streak at “Auto Oscars”: Already 19th “Golden Steering Wheel” for Opel

Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz

New Opel Mokka-e has won the “Golden Steering Wheel 2021” 1, defeating strong competition and claiming one of the most prestigious prizes in the automotive industry as “Best Car under €25,000”.

Mokka-e seamlessly continues Opel's series success in this award. Only last year, the battery-electric Opel Corsa-e brought the “Golden Steering Wheel” 2 to Rüsselsheim. After the Opel Ampera-e in 2017 and the Corsa-e in 2020, Mokka-e is now the third electric model and also the first SUV from Opel to take the coveted title. Electric vehicles with the Blitz electrify the experts and readers of AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG just as much as the customers.

“Our Opel Mokka-e is everything but ordinary, and proved it once again at this year's ‘Golden Steering Wheel’”, said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz at last night's award ceremony in Berlin's Axel Springer Haus. “With state-of-the-art technologies and uncompromising design, Opel Mokka-e makes e-mobility fun in every way. We are very pleased that our customers, the readers of AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG, as well as the expert jury see it the same way.”

Opel Mokka-e: Battery-electric eye-catcher with the Blitz in the Opel Vizor

New Opel Mokka-e impresses not only with its bold and pure design, but also with its performance. Electric motor with 100 kW/136 hp and 260 Newton metres of maximum torque delivers a powerful, almost silent drive. Thanks to the 50 kWh battery, up to 338 kilometres are possible without a charging stop according to WLTP 3. Electronically limited top speed is 150 km/h. A state-of-the-art regenerative braking system makes the Opel Mokka-e even more efficient, allowing the electric vehicle to recuperate energy during deceleration or braking. Battery can be quickly recharged up to 80 per cent in 30 minutes at a 100 kW DC charging station.

Opel and the “Golden Steering Wheel”: All the Winners from Rüsselsheim

New Opel Mokka-e is the latest in a proud line of “Golden Steering Wheel” award winners from Opel. Award, which has been presented since 1976 by BILD am SONNTAG and from 2009 in cooperation with AUTO BILD has now been won by the brand with Blitz for the 19th time. It all started in 1978, two years after the award was founded, with the Opel Senator A.

On the way to the "Golden Steering Wheel" victory, the readers of AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG are first to vote. They elect their three favourites in each category, sending them to the final. At the DEKRA Lausitzring, a prominent jury of experts consisting of journalists, racing drivers and car experts will then assess the individual finalists according to criteria based on the AUTO BILD test scheme.

Bright, precise and glare-free: higher safety thanks to IntelliLux LED Matrix light

Opel has always played a pioneering role when it comes to innovative light technology that is affordable for customers. Every new Mokka, beginning with the entry-level version, is equipped with the newest generation of LED lighting – from the daylight running lamps in typical Opel design, to the headlamps, indicators and taillights.

Adaptive IntelliLux LED Matrix headlamps with their 14 LEDs are a true highlight in this vehicle class. The technology is far superior to Xenon or conventional lighting because it is more precise, more powerful and more durable. Above all, IntelliLux LED Matrix headlamps in the new Opel Mokka are moderately priced, costing only €600 in Germany (RRP including VAT).

As in the Opel Insignia, Opel Astra and Opel Corsa, matrix light enables the new Mokka to be driven with main beam permanently switched on. Approaching or preceding vehicles are “cut” out of the light cone in fractions of a second by the individual LEDs. Nobody is dazzled and night is turned into day for the occupants of the Mokka. Framed by the new Opel Vizor brand fascia, the intelligent headlamps make driving at night safer and more comfortable. As soon as the car has left the city limits, the matrix headlamps switch on at speeds above 50 km/h. The light cone is continuously adjusted to the prevailing traffic situation – on the autobahn, on country roads and in curves.

“Thanks to the compact LEDs, customers benefit from much slimmer headlamps than in the past. The new Mokka not only offers top lighting, it also looks great”, says Schneider in praise of the styling potential enabled by the IntelliLux LED Matrix headlamps. The same applies to the rear of the car, where LEDs are also employed. Therefore, the designers could give the new Mokka a wider and especially slim appearance at the rear, enhancing the impression of precision and quality.

Efficient as well as good looking: Full LED systems in the Opel portfolio

Opel offers full LED headlamps with many automatic functions for the majority of its passenger car models. The drivers and passengers of the Opel Grandland X and the Opel Crossland, for example, therefore enjoy optimum vision at night. In addition to the brighter light, LEDs are also more efficient than conventional headlamps, which makes a significant contribution to a further reduction in CO2 emissions.

New Opel Mokka-e: Stylish design accessories

On the outside, Opel Mokka shines with the new brand face Opel-Vizor, in the middle of which it confidently carries the newly designed Opel Blitz. At the rear, the centrally aligned model name is an eye-catcher. Stylish design accessories that Opel offers for the Mokka go well with this appearance. Eighteen-inch light alloy wheels emphasize the bold, clear lines. They can be individually personalised with fashionable rim trim clips in seven different colours – from bright red to sparkling green to deep blue, everything is included. Exterior mirror housings can also be matched with coloured decorative caps. And in the cockpit, the interior mirror option shines in a very personal design.

If you want to personalise your Opel Mokka even more, you can opt for the design packages, which are available in white or black to make the vehicle flanks, bonnet and roof look even more stylish. Also available is protection for the loading sill, which not only looks good but also prevents the irritating scratches that can occur while loading and unloading the boot. Side-steps will expand the accessory portfolio in the second half of the year. Featuring an anti-slip surface, they can withstand up to 140 kg during entry or egress of the vehicle.

All the accessories have one thing in common – they were perfectly matched to the future-oriented design language of the new Opel Mokka during the development of the new model and are characterized by their precise fit on the car. Opel Mokka shows once again that it is bold, pure and everything except ordinary.
