30 years ago, Opel Team Belgium was active in Belgian Rallying, in the hands of Bernard Munster , among others . With his Opel Corsa he created a spectacle and even turned his Corsa GSi into a Corsa pickup with a roll over, to the delight of the audience in Ypres. Now it is time for a revival and this time Charles Munster will defend the Belgian colors in a unique concept. After all, Opel is the first manufacturer to organize a Rally Cup with the fully electric Opel Corsa-e.

“I drove an Opel Corsa GSi for Opel Team Belgium for three years. I look back on that period with great pleasure. It was always a pleasant sight, I as a tall pilot and Willy Lux as a small co-pilot. We were a perfect duo and had a great time ”, Bernard tells us, now owner of BMA Motorsport.

And he raised Rally driving to his sons. Both Grégoire and Charles were highly successful in the Opel ADAM Rally Cup for several years. They also learned the business with the Opel cars.

Munster family was immediately ready to take a chance with the Opel Corsa-e, which will compete in a number of competitions in the German championship this year. Electrification is obviously a very big step for them for a family with petrol in their veins, but it is also a unique evolution for them towards better protection of the environment.

Charles thus includes the gloves in the international plateau of this new formula.

“I am really looking forward to defending the colors of Opel Belgium in the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup 2021. This new formula is groundbreaking and is fully in line with the current realm of the responsibility that the automotive sector takes in the context of protecting the environment. I am already fully preparing - physically and mentally - for this championship ”, the sympathetic Charles Munster tells us.

“Car's “early torque” is particularly spectacular. And another big adjustment for us as pilots is especially good management of the brakes, since braking on the engine is not possible or less severe ”, says Charles.

Charles also told us that he has a good feeling about it because all aspects of safety are covered and go even further than for Rally cars with a petrol engine.

Deutscher Motor Sport Bund is responsible for ensuring that strict safety regulations can be met at all times during an event. One of the most important tasks for the DMSB is to train the rally marshals, from the marshals on the special stages to the staff of the Service Park. For all persons who have to perform certain tasks on or with an electric competition car, different safety certificates are required, which are categorized according to the colors blue-green, yellow-orange-red. Only those certified in the red category are allowed to work on the high voltage system of the Opel Corsa-e Rally or any other electric rally car.

The newly developed safety concept for the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup thus covers all relevant areas for the use of electric rally vehicles. It includes the technical specifications, the training of teams and rally marshals, as well as information for spectators at the special stages and in the Service Park.

New Vauxhall Corsa retains its place as UK's best selling car

New Vauxhall Corsa is the UK's best-selling car so far this year, according to the latest new car sales and registration figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Vauxhall Corsa has been the UK’s best-selling car in eight of the last 12 months, including June, July, September and November last year. It’s also been number one every month so far this year.

In addition, the fully-electric Corsa-e has performed strongly, recording the highest number of sales for 2021 year-to-date in the small Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sector.

In 2021, the new Corsa recorded 16,381 registrations, while the new Corsa-e was the best-selling small BEV, with 1,706 sales.

Commenting on the results, Paul Willcox, Managing Director, Vauxhall, said: “It’s great to see the new Vauxhall Corsa remain the UK’s best-selling car and we’re proud that its all-electric version, Corsa-e, is the UK’s best-selling small EV.  Customer interest in electric cars and vans in the UK is at an all-time high and Vauxhall is continually expanding its line-up to offer class-leading electrified vehicles, not least with a fully electric van line-up to come before the end of the year.”

Vauxhall sales were buoyed in April by showrooms reopening nationwide within UK Government guidelines, with staff and customer safety at the forefront.

Customers can also purchase new models using the Vauxhall Online Store, which brings the new car shopping experience to the comfort of buyers’ homes. They can arrange a live video viewing of a vehicle via the Vauxhall Virtual Showroom and proceed to the Online Store to configure their new model, personalise finance payments and place an order – all from the comfort and safety of home.

All-new fifth generation Vauxhall Corsa is available with a fully-electric powertrain or a choice of efficient petrol or diesel engines. Zero-emissions Corsa-e was voted The Sun Car of the Year, thanks to its 209-mile WLTP range, affordable price and fun driving dynamics.

Stellantis prepares introduction of the second shift at the Rüsselsheim plant

• Stellantis is preparing the introduction of a second shift in its production facility in Rüsselsheim am Main
• This will create around 300 additional jobs in assembly and finishing this year

Organization of the second shift is made possible by the previously announced production of new models, the production of which will start this year in Rüsselsheim: From summer, a model of the French premium brand will be produced at the site with the new DS 4 and the next generation of the Opel Astra later in the year.

Right from the start of production, both models, which are based on the EMP2 (Efficient Modular) platform, will also be available as hybrids, making Rüsselsheim a future-proof production location for electrified vehicles. New positions are to be filled internally with employees from areas that are underutilized.

“Second shift is scheduled to start in autumn and is an important step in leading the Rüsselsheim plant into the future. We offer interested employees good prospects, because with the new electrified models, the plant will also be well utilized in the long term, ”said plant manager Michael Lewald. Opel Insignia, the flagship of the traditional German brand, is currently being produced at the Rüsselsheim plant.

Opel significantly increases market share in Germany in the first quarter

Opel's upward trend in the important German home market continues: In March, the brand with the Blitz achieved a car market share of 6.5 percent - almost one and a half percentage points more than in the previous year. March was the sixth month in a row with higher market shares compared to the previous year. In the first quarter, Opel achieved a car market share of 6.35 percent.

Volume in the first quarter was noticeably influenced by the effects of the ongoing corona pandemic, but new Opel registrations also increased significantly in March - by 75 percent to almost 19,000 cars. In March 2020 it had the first corona-related Lockdown given in Germany.

New Opel Crossland

Guarantee of success was once again Germany's most popular small car, Opel Corsa. In the first quarter, the model - as the Corsa-e winner of the “Golden Steering Wheel 2020” in the small car category - sold a total of around 12,770 times. That is an increase of almost 20 percent. New edition of the compact Opel Crossland SUV also contributed to Opel's successful performance and was newly registered around 2,040 times in March alone (+90.5 percent). New Opel Mokka, which has only been available from dealers since the end of February, was registered more than 3,700 times in the first quarter.

Opel is also continuing to grow in light commercial vehicles: around 1,700 new registrations in March mean an increase of 45 percent, so that the total market share in Germany rose to more than 6.3 percent in the first quarter.

Brand with the lightning bolt also continued to grow in electrified models: a total of around 4,850 electrified Opel (passenger cars and light commercial vehicles) were newly registered in Germany in the first quarter. This corresponds to an increase of around 2,900 units or a good 150 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Around every tenth Opel sold in Germany is a battery-electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid. Opel Corsa-e (around 2,110 units; +233 percent) and the Mokka-e (around 610 units) were particularly successful.

New Vauxhall Corsa is the UK's best-selling car for the first quarter of 2021, according to the latest new car sales and registration figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In addition, the fully-electric Vauxhall Corsa-e has performed equally strongly, recording the highest number of sales in March in the small Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sector.

Success of the Vauxhall Corsa and Corsa-e, as well as the recent introduction of the all-new Vauxhall  Mokka and New Crossland SUVs, helped Vauxhall increase its share of the passenger car market from 5.6% to 5.8% year-on-year

Vauxhall’s successful first quarter has been achieved despite showrooms being shut for the first three months of the year as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. All-New Vauxhall Corsa recorded 12,413 registrations, while the new Corsa-e was the best-selling small BEV, with 1,232 sales.

Overall, the brand recorded a total of 15,868 new passenger car registrations in March and 24,826 year-to-date. 

Commenting on the results, Paul Willcox, Managing Director, Vauxhall, said: “We’re delighted the new Vauxhall Corsa is the UK’s best-selling car in the first quarter of 2021. As well as passenger cars, we’ve seen strong LCV sales with the Combo number one in its segment and also high demand for our game-changing, all-electric Vivaro-e.

Europe has a variety of electricity grids, plugs and charging options, but electric mobility can still be easy. Electrified models from Opel, with their range of up to 337 kilometres in the WLTP cycle (such as the bestselling Corsa-e) demonstrate everyday practicality. The same goes for the charger options from Opel, above all for the Universal Charger, the Swiss army knife among chargers that supplies the appropriate electric “groove”, as the YouTube video shows. The Universal Charger is not only available for the battery electric Opel Mokka-e, Corsa-e, Zafira-e Life or Vivaro-e, but also the Grandland X plug-in hybrid.

Fully prepared: Opel models make recharging easy

It does not matter what Opel model customers drive, if they have to “refill” the battery on a longer journey they have the choice. If it needs to go quickly, the 50 kWh battery of the Corsa-e, for example, can be charged to 80 per cent of capacity in 30 minutes at a 100 kW DC charging station. Wallbox, high-speed charging or cable for the domestic plug socket, every electrified Opel model is ready for all charging options, from single-phase to three-phase AC at 11 kW.

Universal charger: Recharging without borders

Universal Charger unites the functions of “Mode 2” and “Mode 3” cables with various adapters in a single device. Customers can connect the charger to nearly all country specific household plug sockets. The latter works with the type 2 plug. Customers need a 400V AC socket in order to charge at home with up to 11 kW. The required CEE-16 plug, together with the aforementioned adapter, is part of the Universal Charger pack, along with a practical case for storing cables and plugs in the boot.

Universal Charger is therefore ideal for customers who normally charge their car overnight at home and for those who occasionally make longer journeys and need to recharge while travelling. The Universal Charger with its three different connections and the case is available with every new-car order, for prices starting at €720 (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

In Germany, customers who want to install their own private recharging infrastructure at home can obtain financial support from the German government. Opel’s cooperation partner in Germany, inno2grid, then takes care of the installation and putting the wallbox into operation on-site.

Opel is Electric: Battery Refurbishment Center in Rüsselsheim for Best Service

Opel customers have had the choice of driving electrically or combustion engine powered cars for ten years. The first was the Opel Ampera in 2011, followed by the Ampera-e and the current models, from Corsa-e to Zafira-e Life. Alongside the e-vehicles, Opel has established a service for the maintenance of high voltage batteries. The facility set up ten years ago for the Ampera has been brought right up to date. The center now checks and, if necessary, repairs the batteries of all company vehicles on the eCMP platform (currently Opel Corsa-e, Mokka-e) and the Combo-e, Vivaro-e and Zafira-e Life. By the end of this year, Opel will be on the road with nine electric models and will offer an electrified version in each series by 2024.

“Over the years we have gained a lot of experience with lithium-ion batteries”, says Opel’s Managing Director Engineering, Marcus Lott. “A failure is very rare, but if it happens, investigating the cause and making repairs are jobs for specialists. We now put our competence at the disposal of the whole company and provide fast support.”

Opel has significantly expanded and modernised the “Battery Refurbishment Center” in Rüsselsheim. All the employees are professionals in electricity and trained to high-voltage level 5 standard. Technicians take care of the cases that dealers from all over Europe cannot handle. Last year, that amounted to around 100 defects among up to ten-year-old cars in which a control unit, or in the worst case, a battery cell failed to function. The battery then comes to Rüsselsheim, where the sealed pack is opened by the high-voltage experts. The malfunctioning cell is exchanged and the whole battery returned to the customer. In the event of more serious damage – such as after a collision – sufficient reconditioned batteries are always available in Rüsselsheim. In return the customer receives an exchange battery as replacement.

Only the Rüsselsheim battery centre is allowed to open the faulty battery. Sealed unit must be cut open by the high voltage experts. Damaged cell is replaced and the fully functional battery is then sent as a replacement battery to the warehouse.

New Corsa remains a guarantee of success for Opel: Latest generation of the classic small car has rolled off the production line in Zaragoza, Spain, around 300,000 times already, to be delivered to customers all over the world. Since the market launch of the Corsa in November 2019, the car has been a real winner and has taken various awards.

And, at times, the new Corsa was the best-selling car across all segments in the UK last year – a position it is currently holding this year too.

From Chile to Reunion and Morocco to South Africa: Opel Corsa is also in great demand outside of Europe. International Opel Corsa sales almost tripled in 2020 and things are continuing to improve at the beginning of 2021: Opel Corsa sales in the Middle East / Africa export regions, Latin America and Asia / Pacific have already more than doubled in the first two months of 2021 compared to the entire first quarter of the 2020. Opel Corsa also plays a central role in further expansion plans and will, among other things, herald the brand's comeback in Japan. This makes the Corsa an important pillar of Opel's export offensive.

Corsa is also key to Opel’s comprehensive electrification offensive. In the first two months of the year alone, more than 4,000 Corsa-e were sold. Private and fleet customers are equally enthusiastic about the suitability for everyday use.

Opel Corsa also gives customers access to technologies and assistance systems more often found in higher market segments. The top features include the adaptive, glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix light that Opel offers for the first time in the small car segment. In addition, the small car bestseller comes with numerous advanced driver assistance systems. Thanks to the high-tech front camera, traffic sign recognition detects a wide range of information, such as LED signs. The speed limits saved in the system appear on the display. Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking and Pedestrian and Cyclist detection is active at speeds from 5 to 85 km/h and increases safety considerably, especially in dense city traffic. Adaptive Speed Control automatically adapts the gap between the car and the preceding vehicle by decelerating or accelerating. If the preceding car decelerates, the Corsa also slows down –even to a standstill, if necessary. If the preceding car gains speed again, the Corsa also accelerates up to the selected speed. Lane Keep Assist applies gradual corrective steering and a gentle nudge if the car leaves its lane unintentionally. Side Blind Spot Alert, the 180-degree camera and various parking assistants facilitate manoeuvring in the city.

Opel Corsa-e is compact, nimble and suitable for everyday use thanks to its range of up to 337 km according to WLTP 1. 50 kWh battery can be fast-charged to up to 80 per cent state-of-charge in 30 minutes. Opel Corsa-e is ready for all charging options – via wall box, high-speed charging or cable for household sockets – and an eight-year/160,000km warranty covers the battery.

Opel has always played a pioneering role when it comes to innovative light technology that is affordable for customers. Every new Mokka, beginning with the entry-level version, is equipped with the newest generation of LED lighting – from the daylight running lamps in typical Opel design, to the headlamps, indicators and taillights.

Adaptive IntelliLux LED Matrix headlamps with their 14 LEDs are a true highlight in this vehicle class. The technology is far superior to Xenon or conventional lighting because it is more precise, more powerful and more durable. Eighteen-inch light alloy wheels emphasize the bold, clear lines. They can be individually personalised with fashionable rim trim clips in seven different colours – from bright red to sparkling green to deep blue, everything is included. Exterior mirror housings can also be matched with coloured decorative caps. And in the cockpit, the interior mirror option shines in a very personal design.

New Opel Combo-e Life

All charged up and heading for a driveway near you soon – Opel announces the new Combo-e Life battery electric vehicle! Highly versatile and practical, with a huge amount of interior space, the all-electric leisure activity vehicle (LAV) from the German carmaker comes with either one or two sliding side doors and is available as a 4.4-metre-long standard or 4.75 m XL version, both with either five or seven seats. Depending on the driving profile and the prevailing conditions, the new Combo-e Life can drive up to 280 kilometres on a single charge of its 50 kWh lithium-ion battery (WLTP) 1. Owners can “refill” the battery to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes at public charging stations.

Young families with multi-faceted lifestyles, who live in or near towns or cities, must transport several children and also want “green mobility”, will especially appreciate the Opel Combo-e Life. The new electric car from the brand with the Blitz even features a towing capacity of 750 kg 2 – class-leading in this market segment – with the option of trailer stability control.

Electric drive: Clean mobility for cross-country as well as downtown

Thanks to 100 kW (136 hp) and 260 Nm of torque from the electric propulsion system, the Combo-e Life is perfect also for the open road. Depending on the model variant, the leisure activity vehicle accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in only 11.2 seconds 3, while the 130-km/h maximum speed (electronically limited) makes the LAV “autobahn-proof”. A sophisticated regenerative braking system with two user-selectable settings further increases efficiency.

Battery with 216 cells and 18 modules is packaged under the floor between the front and rear axles, so that it does not compromise usage of the passenger compartment. In this location, the battery lowers the centre of gravity as well, which benefits wind stability and cornering, for additional driving fun.

Opel Combo-e Life is ready for a variety of energy infrastructures and charging options, ranging from wall box to fast charging or even a cable for charging from a domestic plug socket if necessary. Using a 100 kW DC public charging station, charging of the 50 kWh battery to 80 per cent takes only around 30 minutes. Depending on the market and infrastructure, the Combo-e Life features a powerful three-phase 11 kW on-board charger or a single-phase 7.4 kW on-board charger as standard.

Along with its petrol and diesel engine siblings that were crowned “Best Buy Car Europe 2019” by AUTOBEST, the zero-emission Combo-e Life also makes no compromises on safety, comfort or convenience. The comprehensive portfolio of class-leading technologies and driver assistance systems extends from hill descent control, lane keep assist and driver drowsiness alert, to traffic sign recognition and forward collision alert with pedestrian protection and automatic emergency braking.

Particularly helpful for parking is the Panorama Rear View camera that increases vision to the rear and to the sides. Owners needing extra traction on mud, sand or snow can upgrade the Combo-e Life with the IntelliGrip electronic traction control system.

Opel offers the Combo-e Life in two lengths (4.40 m and 4.75 m as the XL model variant) with five or seven seats, which also makes it an attractive car for taxi firms. Shorter five-seater offers at least 597 litres of boot space (850 litres in the longer version). Multifunctional everyday hero almost displays “freighter” qualities with the rear seats folded down. Luggage volume of the short version then more than triples to 2,126 litres, while the longer one can carry up to 2,693 litres. In addition, the optional front passenger dump-latch seat folds flush with the rear seats, extending the length of the loading area so that even surfboards can be transported.

Heavens above: Panorama roof with electric sunblind plus overhead storage

With the luggage safely stowed away, the optional panorama roof allows passengers to star-gaze or lap up the sun’s rays. If the sun is too strong, an electric sunblind – activated via a switch in the overhead console – can be closed to provide protection. When open, the panorama roof also improves the feeling of space even further while simultaneously creating a pleasant and light ambience. When ordered with the panoramic roof, Opel Combo-e Life comes with overhead storage running down the centre of the vehicle with LED lighting as standard. In this configuration the newcomer is also fitted with a large 36‑litre storage box mounted above the hat tray in the boot.

Owners of both variants can choose between the standard second row bench with 60/40 split or three individual seats, which can be folded conveniently from the boot. In both cases, each seating position has its own Isofix child seat bracket as standard, allowing for three child seats to be fitted next to each other.

When everyone is sitting comfortably, they can enjoy the Combo-e Life’s infotainment. The Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi Pro systems come with a large 8.0-inch touchscreen and top connectivity. Both feature phone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

E-services: Charging the Opel Combo-e Life throughout Europe is as easy as pie

In order to make living with the Combo-e Life as comfortable as possible, “OpelConnect”, the “myOpel” app and “Free2Move” offer special solutions for electric vehicles. Services are accessible via apps.

The “Charge My Car” function from the “Free2Move” app enables access to more than 220,000 charging points throughout Europe, including payment. The “Free2Move” app makes a preselection based on the distance to the charging point, the charging speed and the current charging price of the possible public charging options.

The “OpelConnect” portfolio ranges from eCall and breakdown calls to numerous other services, such as vehicle status and information. LIVE Navigation 4 provides online traffic information in real time.

New Opel Combo-e Life will show up at dealerships this autumn, joining the Corsa-e, Mokka-e, Grandland X plug-in hybrid and Zafira-e Life as the newest member of Opel’s electrified passenger car range. Including the next-generation Astra as well as the Vivaro‑e, Combo-e and Movano-e light commercial vehicles (LCV), the brand will have nine electrified models in its portfolio by the end of this year. Opel will offer an electrified version of every passenger car and LCV model by 2024.
