Future is Now: New Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is the ideal light commercial vehicle for fleet customers who want to cover long distances or who need to refuel within minutes. Electrically powered Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle with plug-in battery. Packaging of the technology is so compact that it makes no compromises on cargo space compared with conventional powertrains. The range is up to 400 kilometres (WLTP 1) and it takes only three minutes to refuel with hydrogen – about the same time needed to fill up a conventional diesel or petrol car. Vehicle offers a cargo volume of up to 6.1 cubic metres and a payload of 1,000 kilogrammes as well as a towing capacity of 1,000 kg. The Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is available in lengths M and L (4.95 and 5.30 m) and has already joined the fleet of Miele, the German premium domestic appliance manufacturer.

Clever concept: Long range, zero emissions, quick refuelling

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is based on the battery electric Opel Vivaro-e, the “2021 International Van of the Year”. Principle of Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is simple: from hydrogen and air, the fuel cell generates electricity to drive the electric motor. Only product of this reaction is pure water vapour out of the exhaust.

Plug-in fuel cell concept of the Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN enables the integration of the whole fuel cell system with the existing traction motor under the bonnet. In addition, the battery of the Vivaro-e BEV (battery electric vehicle) is replaced by three 700 bar hydrogen tanks with a capacity of 4.4 kg

45 kW fuel cell can generate enough power for longer stretches of highway driving, while the 10.5 kWh lithium-ion battery located under the front seats provides dynamic peak power when required, for example, at start-up and under acceleration. Since the battery covers power needs in such situations, the fuel cell can run at optimum operating conditions. 

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN also features regenerative braking, while the plug-in capability offers the opportunity to recharge the battery externally, if necessary, e.g. at a charging station, providing 50 km of pure battery electric range. A three-phase onboard charger (11 kW) and a mode 2 charging cable are standard.

Ready for everything: Two lengths and up to 6.1 m3 of cargo volume

Thanks to smart packaging, Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN makes no compromises on space compared to the combustion engine versions, offering up to 5.3 (size M) or 6.1 m3 (size L) of cargo volume. The payload of the fuel cell electric LCV is 1,000 kg. Loading/unloading is easy via the sliding doors on each side and the rear doors.

Like its battery-electric sibling and those with internal combustion engines, Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN offers an unusually wide range of driver assistance systems that enhance safety. The equipment includes a 180-degree panorama rear view camera, blind-spot alert and front/rear park pilot.

Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment system operates via voice recognition or colour touchscreen and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation system offers maps for Europe, dynamic route guidance and TMC. Users can also cool or heat the vehicle during recharging via “OpelConnect” and programme charging times with the “myOpel” app.

Production of the Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is currently beginning and ramping up at Opel Special Vehicles (OSV) in Rüsselsheim. Opel and Stellantis have more than 20 years of experience in the development of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.

With the new Vivaro-e HYDROGEN, Opel is continuing its electrification offensive. Customers have the choice of selecting the drive concept in the Opel LCV portfolio that suits their application. The Vivaro e HYDROGEN complements the Combo-e Cargo, Vivaro-e and Movano-e battery-electric light commercial vehicles. Opel will offer an electrified version of every passenger car and LCV model by 2024.

Opel & Vauxhall Vivaro-e Tops Sales Charts in Germany and United Kingdom

  • Opel Vivaro-e bestselling electric van in its segment in Germany in first quarter

Vivaro-e is continuing to be hugely popular with customers looking for an emissions-free electric commercial vehicle. Opel Vivaro-e was the bestselling medium electric van in Germany in the first quarter of 2022. Its sales helped Opel to grow its market share in the increasingly important electric light commercial vehicle market to almost 19% in the first three months of the year. In the UK, the Vauxhall Vivaro-e was the best-selling e-LCV in March and remains the overall highest-selling e-LCV for the year. Year-on-year, Vauxhall has seen its UK e-LCV market share grow from 19% to 22.7%. Opel and Vauxhall are part of a small group of manufacturers already able to offer electric variants across the entire LCV portfolio.

With a WLTP range of up to 328 kilometres1and a maximum payload of up to 1,163 kilogrammes, the Vivaro-e is at the forefront of Opel’s and Vauxhall’s commitment to electrification, as the German and British brand continue their electric vehicle expansion with the goal of offering an electrified variant of every model by 2024, and to offer only fully electric cars and vans in Europe by 2028.

In addition, Opel is already preparing the next step in the success of the Vivaro by pushing ahead with production of the Vivaro-e HYDROGEN. It is based on the existing battery electric Opel Vivaro-e, the “2021 International Van of the Year”. With full tanks of hydrogen, the driving range is more than 400 kilometres (WLTP1). 45 kW fuel cell is capable of generating enough power for continuous highway driving. It takes only three minutes to refuel with hydrogen – about the same time needed to fill up a conventional diesel or petrol vehicle. Thanks to smart packaging, Vivaro-e HYDROGEN demands no compromises on space compared to the combustion engine versions, offering up to 5.3 or 6.1 cubic metres of cargo volume. Fuel cell electric LCV is available in lengths M and L (4.95 and 5.30 metres) with up to 1,000 kilogrammes of payload.

Sporty outfits for vans are a tradition in Rüsselsheim

It is no coincidence that the Opel Zafira-e Life as well as the Opel Vivaro and Vivaro-e have acquired a sporty outfit. Opel Vivaro Sport of the previous Vivaro generation was highly popular with customers. So the designers in Rüsselsheim came up with two new decors for the current Vivaro and Zafira-e Life that create a unique, more dynamic look.

Opel Vivaro Sportive decor set is available in silver or black for only €399 in Germany. Customers can order the Expressive decor, which has been specially developed for the Opel Zafira-e Life – also in silver or black – for €449 (all prices in Germany including VAT plus the price for application at the dealership).

Decor sets are not only available for new registrations, but also for used vans or vehicles already on the market. E for emissions-free: Opel with Consistent Focus on Electrification

  • From 2022: Opel Combo Life, Vivaro Combi and Zafira Life exclusively with electric drive

Opel is continuing to consistently roll out its electrification offensive in the New Year. Eleven Opel models will be electrified by mid-2022 – including Opel’s entire light commercial vehicle (LCV) range. En route to an emissions-free fleet, some models will exclusively be offered as battery-electric variants this year already. Customers can now order the Opel Combo Life, Vivaro Combi and Zafira Life exclusively with an electric drive. In Germany, the state and manufacturers jointly subsidise the purchase of electric cars with up to €9,000. Innovation bonus is still valid in this form until the end of 2022. A corresponding application for the environmental bonus must be submitted to the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA).

“There is no alternative to electrification. In the future, Opel will gain even more traction with environmentally friendly innovations. And what shows us the rapid change again very clearly: From 2024, we will offer an electrified version of every Opel model, without exception. In other words, the successors to Opel Crossland and Opel Insignia will also be electrified. Our statement is clear: From 2028, we will exclusively sell battery-electric vehicles in Europe,” said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz.

New Opel Astra Hybrid

In the coming months, the new generation of the Opel Astra will be the linchpin of the Rüsselsheim-based brand’s electrification offensive. After celebrating its premiere in September 2021, all-new Opel Astra five-door will arrive at customers in the spring – and will be available as a plug-in hybrid right from the start. In 2023, the purely battery-electric Opel Astra-e will complete the range. Emissions-free product portfolio with the Blitz already ranges from the Opel Rocks-e lightweight vehicle to the large Opel Movano-e van.

Opel Combo-e Life and the Opel Zafira-e Life are already very successful in the market. Both MPVs are powered by a 100 kW/136 hp electric motor. With its 50 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Combo-e-Life achieves a range of up to 280 kilometres in accordance with the WLTP 1, depending on the driving profile, outside temperature and use. When necessary, it takes around only 30 minutes for the battery to reach 80 per cent state-of-charge at a public DC fast charging station.

With the large Opel Zafira-e Life, the customer can choose between a 50 kWh lithium-ion battery (231 kilometres range according to WLTP 1) and a battery with 75 kWh for a first-class range of up to 329 kilometres according to WLTP 1. Opel Zafira-e Life is available in three vehicle lengths with space for up to nine people.

In addition to plug-in hybrid and battery-electric models, Opel can also already offer a plug-in fuel cell electric vehicle. Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is based on the existing battery electric Opel Vivaro-e, the “International Van of the Year 2021”. Newcomer has a fuel cell drive combined with a plug-in battery and with full tanks of hydrogen, the driving range is more than 400 kilometres (WLTP 1). First Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN off the production line will begin its emissions-free work in the fleet of the German manufacturer of premium domestic appliances, Miele.

However, Opel is not only on the way to a CO2-neutral future with its models and drive alternatives – something the brand is currently proving at several locations. This year, Opel and Stellantis are pushing ahead with the plans to build the battery cell gigafactory in Kaiserslautern. And in Rüsselsheim, the project is taking shape to transform the Opel headquarters into a green campus as the future German headquarters of Stellantis.

Emotional, Efficient, Electric: 2022 Will be year of the Opel Astra

In 2022, the tradition-rich German carmaker will continue on its journey towards becoming an efficient, electric, emotional brand. Important Opel vehicles – above all-new Astra generation – will hit the road in the coming months.

2022 is special for Opel for another reason too. Year will mark the 160th anniversary of Adam Opel laying the foundations for a company that evolved from a sewing machine factory and the world's largest bicycle manufacturer to an internationally respected automotive brand. After 160 years Opel is now transforming itself again, from an automobile manufacturer to an electric mobility service provider. By 2028 Opel will offer only electric vehicles in Europe.

“We are already realising the automotive future today – bold and pure in design, emotional and electrifying in every way,” said Opel CEO, Uwe Hochgeschurtz. “Our compact-class best-sellers, the Astra and Astra Sports Tourer, take to the roads in 2022, along with the new Grandland. In addition, we recently completed our line-up of CO2-free, sustainable propulsion systems with the Vivaro-e HYDROGEN, a fuel cell light commercial vehicle that meets every demand. These models are important milestones with which we will extend our success in 2022.”

Right at the start of the year, Opel will be back in full swing at the Eisenach plant. Production of the new Grandland (including the electric plug-in hybrid variants) will start there in January and the SUV flagship will soon be rolling to the first customers. New Rocks-e has already arrived. Opel’s first SUM (Sustainable Urban Mobility) can be driven in Germany by 15-year-olds who hold an AM driving licence 2.

While Opel’s smallest, Rocks-e, is drawing attention in city traffic, largest Opel, new Movano, will also enter active service – also as the all-electric Movano-e. This means that customers can now choose a battery-electric version of every Opel light commercial vehicle.

In addition, since the end of this year, the new Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN fuel cell electric van is also in the transportation business, with a driving range of more than 400 kilometres in the WLTP cycle 3 and hydrogen-refuelling in just three minutes.

Opel therefore continues to drive forward the electrification of the brand and its models – from light vehicles (aka quadricycles) to light commercial vehicles. Focus of attention in the coming months will be the all-new generation of the Opel Astra. After its premiere in September 2021, the new five-door Astrawill be available to customers as early as next spring, also as a powerful and efficient plug-in hybrid. All-electric Opel Astra-e will complete the offer in 2023. All-new Opel Astra Sports Tourer will celebrate its official world premiere soon. Estate version of the best-seller will also be available with both conventional and electric plug-in hybrid drive next summer. By mid-2022, 11 Opel models will be electrified, including the entire LCV portfolio.

Opel has a long tradition of developing its brand and models to meet the challenges of the future. In the 160th year of the company's history, this is demonstrated in particular by the successful Astra and Corsa. Latter first saw the light of day 40 years ago, in autumn 1982.

It is not without reason that the Astra and its predecessor, the Kadett, are widely perceived as constant benchmarks in the compact class. Sixty years ago, Opel Kadett A was launched, a car that was to play a decisive role in shaping its market sector for decades to come. Both model series – Kadett/Astra and Corsa – still combine tradition with innovation in each new generation and are now making future mobility a reality with electrified drivetrains.

Opel is well on the way to a CO2-free future, and not just with its models and propulsion systems. The brand is also demonstrating this progress at several sites. For example, Opel and Stellantis are pushing ahead with plans to build the battery cell “giga-factory” in Kaiserslautern next year. Meanwhile in Rüsselsheim, the plan to transform the Opel headquarters into a green campus as the future German headquarters of Stellantis is taking firm shape.

Opel Increases Europe Wide Sales of Light Commercial Vehicles

Opel has significantly increased sales of its light commercial vehicles across Europe in the first 11 months of 2021. Compared to the same period last year, sales grew by 12.1 per cent to around 100,000 units1. Results in important markets such as Germany (+9.0 per cent), United Kingdom (+8.1 per cent), France (+25.2 per cent) and Spain (+6.0 per cent) contributed significantly to this development.

Growth of the battery-electric Vivaro-e from Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall between January and October is particularly pleasing. In Europe, the Vivaro-e leads the D segment with a share of 21 per cent. In the overall ranking of all electrified commercial vehicles, the midsize van is in a convincing third place – also thanks to the high sales figures in the UK. There, the Vivaro-e holds a market share of almost 50 per cent in the segment. In Germany, the Opel Vivaro-e has reached third place in the top list. Demand for the only recently introduced Combo-e is already equally good.

“Our light commercial vehicles are holding their own very successfully in the market and have by no means exhausted their full potential,” said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz. “Now that all our LCVs – the Opel Combo-e, Vivaro-e and Movano-e – are available for battery-electric, zero-emissions transportation, we will generate further impetus.”

Opel's light commercial vehicles are highly regarded by customers and the media. For example, the Opel Combo (2019) and the Opel Vivaro-e (2021) were named Van of the Year by an international jury of experts. Another big fan of the electric vans from Rüsselsheim is mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner, who uses the Opel Zafira-e Life and Opel Vivaro-e for emissions-free shuttle operations and deliveries to his mountain museums.

Fleet customers are currently particularly interested in the zero emissions Vivaro-e. Opel's sister brand Vauxhall has already signed contracts for 3,000 battery-electric Vivaro-e vehicles with British Gas and for a further 655 vehicles for the service company Mitie. In Germany, registrations of the Combo increased by 27 per cent compared with the same period last year, the highest growth within the Opel LCV fleet.

In addition to the Opel Combo compact van and the Vivaro midsize van, Opel also offers the Movano large van as the battery-electric Movano-e – as with all Opel's electrified commercial vehicles, with full functionality and unrestricted load volume compared to the conventional variants. This makes the brand with the Blitz currently the only one to offer its entire LCV portfolio battery-electric, emission-free and immediately orderable.

Electric City: Rüsselsheim opens the first charging farm with 152 charging points

City of Rüsselsheim am Main is making a big leap forward in expanding its charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. On Wednesday (September 8th), Mayor Udo Bausch and Opel HR Director Ralph Wangemann put the first of three public charging farms with 152 charging points into operation. The charging farm was set up on a now public parking lot in front of the Opel factory gate. In the future, citizens and factory employees should be able to use the area on Mainzer Straße to charge their electric vehicles.

“Today is an important day for Rüsselsheim. As a city, we are keeping a first part of the promise we made to the citizens of Rüsselsheim: That Rüsselsheim will become electric, ”explained Mayor Udo Bausch. For this, he thanked the federal government as the sponsor, all partners and service providers of the project, in particular the Rüsselsheim municipal utilities, who took care of the network expansion, and Opel, who made space available. "Formerly private, company-owned employee parking spaces have now become public parking spaces that are also accessible to the general public."

Charge electricity with up to 22 kilowatts

Rüsselsheim charging farm is charged at normal charging points with alternating current (AC) and a charging capacity of up to 22 kilowatts. The charging time is between two and four hours, depending on the charging capacity of the charging station, the capacity of the battery and the charging technology of the electric car. Type 2 charging sockets are located at all charging points created as part of the Electric City project. This socket meets the requirements of AC charging in Europe and is installed in every modern electric vehicle.


Electricity with and without a contract

Anyone who would like to charge at one of the public Rüsselsheim Electric City charging stations has a wide range of tariff and contract options. Since the charging stations will in future be operated by the Rüsselsheim municipal utility, the municipal utility's green electricity is available for spontaneous charging without a contractual obligation (ad hoc charging). Anyone who is tied to the electricity of the municipal utility for at least three months can save money with the “ÖkoStrom Mobil” tariff compared to spontaneous charging and can also refuel at any charging station outside of Rüsselsheim that is part of the roaming network of ladenetz.de. Roaming partner can also charge any electricity from any third-party electricity provider at an Electric City charging station that is part of the Ladenetz.de cooperation network.

Two more loading farms are about to go into operation

By the end of October, the city will have opened a total of three charging farms with 540 publicly accessible charging points in parking lots in the city area. Up to 250 additional public charging points, spread across the entire city area, will follow successively in the coming weeks and months. With the Electric City project, a total of around 1,200 charging points will be created in Rüsselsheim by spring 2022: around 800 public and almost 400 private ones. Based on 67,000 inhabitants, this means a charging station density of one public charging point for every 84 citizens. “Projects like 'Electric City Rüsselsheim' are lighthouses that create an important basis for the mobility of the future. With the development of a future-proof charging infrastructure, we support our climate protection goals sustainably and clearly. And at the same time we support the Rüsselsheim-based economy in developing and establishing e-mobility, ”emphasized Mayor Bausch.

Activation via RFID card, app and QR code

So that the electricity can then be assigned to the right customer and correctly billed, the city of Rüsselsheim has up to four different ways of authenticating yourself for a charging process. City of Rüsselsheim relies on all current standards, but also on standards that are still in development.


First of all, there is the charging card, which activates the charging point for charging by simply stopping at the RFID field of the charging station. Greatest advantage of RFID cards is that they are easy to use. Municipal utilities will also use it to equip their electricity customers.

Smartphone apps of the various charging tariff and roaming providers offer a lot of additional information, such as the current occupancy of charging stations or the tariff. In Rüsselsheim, this can be done using the popular app from ladenetz.de. An existing internet connection is required for this.

Ad hoc charging, which does not require a contract, is also dependent on the Internet. For this, the customer data and a means of payment must be stored on the website of the electricity provider before loading. Website can be accessed via a QR code attached to the charging station, which is scanned with the smartphone camera.

A fourth, but still future, variant will be the “Plug & Charge”. Billing chips are integrated directly into the charging electronics of the electric vehicles, so that it will be possible to pay without cards, apps or QR codes. This form of authentication is currently still in development and, when it is ready for the market, will be installed as an update on the Electric City charging stations.

New Opel Movano and Movano-e: Top of Large Van Class

New Opel Movano-e, the first battery electric vehicle from the German brand in the large van market segment. New generation Movano with diesel engines as well as electric drive is the most competitive offer Opel has yet made in this sector of the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market.


Providing class-leading figures for payload, cargo capacity and gross vehicle weights, combined with a wide range of body versions, lengths and heights, the new generation Movano will be available from the start of sales not only with modern, powerful and durable diesel engines, but also with zero-emissions battery-electric drive. New Movano and Movano-e will both arrive at Opel dealerships later this year.

There is a new Opel Movano for every transportation task – from personnel and urban deliveries, to refrigerated goods and campers. The vehicle’s tough and robust character is reflected in the design, which at the same time visualises its dynamics and great efficiency. Importantly for professionals and fleet managers alike, the emission-free Movano-e demands no compromises and thus represents a real alternative to conventionally powered vehicles. The electric propulsion system of Opel’s new e-LCV delivers 90 kW (122 hp) and 260 Nm of torque, with the maximum speed electronically controlled at 110 km/h. Depending on the model variant, customers can choose between 37 kWh and 70 kWh lithium ion batteries for ranges (depending on the driving profile and the prevailing conditions) of up to 117 or 224 kilometres respectively in the WLTP combined cycle 1.


Batteries are packaged under the loading space so that they do not compromise usage, which also benefits the cornering and wind stability even when fully loaded. A sophisticated regenerative braking system, which recovers the energy produced under braking or deceleration, further increases efficiency.


In addition to electric propulsion, the diesel powertrains of the new Movano match the best on the market for high fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions. The power output of the 2.2-litre engines – which all comply with the strict Euro 6d emissions standard – range from 88 kW (120 hp) to 121 kW (165 hp). The high low-end torque extends from 300 Newton metres at 1,500 rpm to 370 Nm at 1,750 rpm. Driving the front wheels, all the engines are paired with six-speed manual transmissions.


Based on the number one platform in the market segment, the new Movano offers excellent load-carrying capability and total cost of ownership as well as a wide range of bodies and cargo capacities.

Wide choice: Four lengths, three heights and 8.0 to 17 m3 of cargo volume


Panel van customers can choose from four lengths (L1-4) and three heights (H1-3), with maximum load capacity ranging from 8.0 to 17 cubic metres. Doors of the H3 variant are 2.03 metres tall – best in class. Together with the rear doors that open to 180 degrees (optionally extendable to 270 degrees), they make the Movano especially easy to load. Range of gross vehicle weights (GVW) is among the widest in this class, extending from 2.8 to 4.0 tons, while payloads reach a maximum of 2.1 tons. With sill heights as low as 494 millimetres, a width of 1422 mm between the wheel arches and 1870 mm between the panels, the load zone for Opel’s new large van represents the benchmark for its rivals.


Standard cab features a single row of three seats, while the second row of the optional crew cab offers seating for an additional four passengers. In order to meet special demands, new Opel Movano is additionally available as a chassis cab, a chassis crew cab and a floor cab with a single row of three seats. Opel’s new LCV is the ideal basis for a broad line-up of specialist conversions as well, such as tippers, drop-sides and campers.

Active safety: High-tech assistance systems for protection of all road users

State-of-the-art driver assistance systems provide protection not only for drivers, crew and passengers, but also other road users. New Movano’s extensive list – much of which is standard equipment, depending on the trim level – includes Automatic Safety Brake, Blind Spot Warning, Hill Descent Control and Lane Departure Warning.


“OpelConnect”, the “myOpel” app and the “Free2Move Services” mobility brand offer special solutions for light commercial vehicles, including e-LCVs. The services are accessible via apps. The “Charge My Car” function from the “Free2Move Services” app enables access to charging points throughout Europe, including payment.

For professional fleet management, the “Opel Connect” telematics solution with “Free2Move Fleet Services” can track the geographic location of the vehicle, optimise routes, monitor maintenance and fuel consumption and offer tips for more economical driving.

New Opel Movano joins the Combo and the Vivaro as the newest member of Opel’s light commercial vehicle family. Brand’s entire LCV portfolio will offer a battery-electric model variant by the end of this year. Opel will offer an electrified version of all passenger car and LCV models by 2024.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN

Opel today unveiled a new electrically powered light commercial vehicle that will enable zero emission mobility for customers who need to refuel within minutes. Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is a plug-in fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) with up to 6.1 cubic metres of cargo capacity (the same as the diesel or battery electric versions of the Vivaro) that needs only three minutes to refuel with hydrogen – about the same time needed to fill up a conventional diesel or petrol car. Range is more than 400 kilometres (WLTP 1). Opel will offer the Vivaro-e HYDROGEN in lengths M and L (4.95 and 5.30 metres). Company plans to start delivering the first vehicles to fleet customers in the autumn.

Efficient, durable, space-saving: Benefits of plug-in fuel cell concept

New fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) is based on the existing battery electric Opel Vivaro-e with two sliding side-doors. Plug-in fuel cell concept of the Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN enables the integration of the whole fuel cell system with the existing traction motor under the bonnet of the production vehicle. In addition, the battery of the Opel Vivaro-e BEV (battery electric vehicle) is replaced by three 700 bar hydrogen tanks. The carbon-fibre cylinders can be filled in just three minutes, giving a range of more than 400 km. Thanks to the smart packaging, the battery electric version thus becomes a fuel cell electric LCV without any modifications to the body and with no impact on the 5.3 to 6.1 m3 of cargo space, while the payload increases to 1,100 kg.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN with its 45 kW fuel cell is capable of generating enough power for continuous highway driving, while the 10.5 kWh lithium-ion battery located under the front seats provides dynamic peak power when required, for example, at start-up and under acceleration. Since the battery covers power needs in such situations, the fuel cell can run at optimum operating conditions. The battery also enables regenerative braking, while the plug-in capability offers the opportunity to recharge the battery externally if necessary, e.g. at a charging station, providing 50 km of pure battery electric range.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN will be produced by Opel Special Vehicles (OSV) in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Global “Competence Centre for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells” of the parent company Stellantis is also located in Opel’s hometown.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN complements Vivaro-e and Combo-e as the newest member of Opel’s all-electric LCV family. Next new model, new Opel Movano-e, will also arrive in 2021, meaning that the brand’s entire light commercial vehicle portfolio will be electric by the end of this year. Opel will offer an electrified version of every passenger car and LCV model by 2024.
