Farewell Winter: Opel Service Makes Cars and Vans Fit for Spring

  • See clearly after the murk of winter: Opel makes special windscreen wiper offer
  • From winter to summer tyres: Brand-name rubber, wheel change and storage
  • Fitness for campers: Ready for the coming season with the Opel Crosscamp

After getting through the winter, it is now time to make the car fit for the spring. And not just the car – the same goes for the Opel Zafira-e Life van and the Crosscamp Lite and the Crosscamp Flex Opel Zafira Life campers. That means getting rid of road salt residues in the car wash, cleaning the interior and making sure everything works properly. It is worth taking a trip to the local Opel dealer too, to get the windscreen wipers – which are heavily used during the winter – changed and have the air conditioning as well as the filter unit serviced. With the winter tyres and wheels coming off and going into storage, Opel also has special offers for new brand-name summer tyres.

Be nice to your windscreen: Let Opel change wiper blades

Smearing wiper blades are often the result of the winter season. Ice, salt and dirt put such a strain on the windscreen wipers that even small cracks occur and the windscreen no longer gets clean without streaks. New wiper blades in Opel Genuine high quality ensure a clear view. In Germany for example, Opel Genuine windscreen wipers are now available with a price advantage of up to 30 per cent. The wiper blades made of synthetic rubber glide smoothly over the windscreen, protecting the glass and keeping it clean thanks to optimum contact pressure, even at higher speeds. Aerodynamic shape also minimises wind noise. With the purchase of new windscreen wipers, participating Opel partners are offering a free vehicle inspection.

With temperatures rising again, drivers will be better off with summer tyres in the coming weeks. The harder rubber compound and larger contact area of summer tyres reduce the braking distance on dry roads compared to winter tyres, for example. Ultimately, this increases safety for all road users. Opel dealers in Germany are now making a special tyre-change offer: Opel drivers can buy new brand-name summer tyres at top conditions and if the winter tyres still have sufficient tread depth, the wheels can simply be stored at the Opel partner for the next season. Beforehand, they are professionally cleaned, checked and prepared for storage.

Opel in Germany is also offering all-round inspections that provide additional peace of mind. The experts at the dealership check safety-related items such as the exterior lighting, engine oil level and the windscreen wipers –with guarantees for the inspected parts. Same applies to the inspections for the starter-battery and the air conditioning – a check for the latter is highly recommended with the warmer seasons approaching.

Be prepared: Happy camping with Opel Zafira Life Crosscamp conversions

Opel Zafira Life Crosscamp

Opel Zafira-based Crosscamp Flex and Crosscamp Lite campers deserve additional attention before the summer holidays begin. In contrast to traditional mobile homes, the conversions from the Erwin Hymer Group brand Crosscamp will not have spent the winter in mothballs, instead they will have been used as everyday transport. Nevertheless, after the Crosscamp has been cleaned inside and out, there are certain items that should receive special attention before the first camping outing of the season.

At the top of the “to-do” list, for safety reasons, is an inspection of the integrity of the gas system and its seals. This might also be a good opportunity to check the level of the gas bottle and replace it if necessary.

Before you go: Check that the camping gear works

To avoid potential frustration at the camp site, the technical camping equipment itself should be given a thorough test before leaving home for the first time of the season. For example: does the interior lighting, the auxiliary heater or the cool box work properly? Is the water pump in working order? Is the bike carrier attached securely? Crosscamp owners should also clean the vehicle’s freshwater canister, disinfect it if required and refill it before the first trip.

When the Crosscamp arrives at its holiday destination, it needs to stand in the optimum position. It is therefore important that chocks for the wheels, the charging cable and adapters for plug sockets are not forgotten and left behind in the garage.

What about the condition of the separate battery for the “living quarters”? Before setting off, the vehicle should be plugged into the electrical grid to be independent and even run the cooler and lights off-grid; and while the battery is charging, the family can restock the interior with basic camping equipment such as crockery and knives and forks.

Finally, when all the items on the checklist have been ticked off, it is “all systems go” for the Crosscamp Lite or Crosscamp Flex. Now, all that remains is to choose the destination, make the reservation and hit the road. Happy camping!

E for emissions-free: Opel with Consistent Focus on Electrification

  • From 2022: Opel Combo Life, Vivaro Combi and Zafira Life exclusively with electric drive
  • Until the end of the year: Environmental bonus of €9,000 extended in Germany
  • As of 2024 already: Electrified version of each Opel model
  • From 2028: Exclusively battery-electric passenger cars in Europe
Opel is continuing to consistently roll out its electrification offensive in the New Year. Eleven Opel models will be electrified by mid-2022 – including Opel’s entire light commercial vehicle (LCV) range. En route to an emissions-free fleet, some models will exclusively be offered as battery-electric variants this year already. Customers can now order the Opel Combo Life, Vivaro Combi and Zafira Life exclusively with an electric drive. In Germany, the state and manufacturers jointly subsidise the purchase of electric cars with up to €9,000. Innovation bonus is still valid in this form until the end of 2022. A corresponding application for the environmental bonus must be submitted to the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA).

“There is no alternative to electrification. In the future, Opel will gain even more traction with environmentally friendly innovations. And what shows us the rapid change again very clearly: From 2024, we will offer an electrified version of every Opel model, without exception. In other words, the successors to Opel Crossland and Opel Insignia will also be electrified. Our statement is clear: From 2028, we will exclusively sell battery-electric vehicles in Europe,” said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz.

New Opel Astra Hybrid

In the coming months, the new generation of the Opel Astra will be the linchpin of the Rüsselsheim-based brand’s electrification offensive. After celebrating its premiere in September 2021, all-new Opel Astra five-door will arrive at customers in the spring – and will be available as a plug-in hybrid right from the start. In 2023, the purely battery-electric Opel Astra-e will complete the range. Emissions-free product portfolio with the Blitz already ranges from the Opel Rocks-e lightweight vehicle to the large Opel Movano-e van.

New Opel Movano-e van

Opel Combo-e Life and the Opel Zafira-e Life are already very successful in the market. Both MPVs are powered by a 100 kW/136 hp electric motor. With its 50 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Combo-e-Life achieves a range of up to 280 kilometres in accordance with the WLTP 1, depending on the driving profile, outside temperature and use. When necessary, it takes around only 30 minutes for the battery to reach 80 per cent state-of-charge at a public DC fast charging station.

Opel Combo-e Life

With the large Opel Zafira-e Life, the customer can choose between a 50 kWh lithium-ion battery (231 kilometres range according to WLTP 1) and a battery with 75 kWh for a first-class range of up to 329 kilometres according to WLTP 1. Opel Zafira-e Life is available in three vehicle lengths with space for up to nine people.

 Opel Zafira-e Life

In addition to plug-in hybrid and battery-electric models, Opel can also already offer a plug-in fuel cell electric vehicle. Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN is based on the existing battery electric Opel Vivaro-e, the “International Van of the Year 2021”. Newcomer has a fuel cell drive combined with a plug-in battery and with full tanks of hydrogen, the driving range is more than 400 kilometres (WLTP 1). First Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN off the production line will begin its emissions-free work in the fleet of the German manufacturer of premium domestic appliances, Miele.

Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN

However, Opel is not only on the way to a CO2-neutral future with its models and drive alternatives – something the brand is currently proving at several locations. This year, Opel and Stellantis are pushing ahead with the plans to build the battery cell gigafactory in Kaiserslautern. And in Rüsselsheim, the project is taking shape to transform the Opel headquarters into a green campus as the future German headquarters of Stellantis.

[1] Range determined according to WLTP test procedure methodology (R (EC) No. 715/2007, R (EU) No. 2017/1151). The actual range can vary under everyday conditions and depends on various factors, in particular on personal driving style, route characteristics, outside temperature, use of heating and air conditioning and thermal preconditioning.

Take a Deep Breath – Thanks to Pollen Filters in Every New Opel

  • Hay fever relief: activated carbon filters in Opel models
  • Top quality: filters meet the highest requirements
  • Something in the air: alder, hazel, ash and birch approaching
  • Survival tips: correct behaviour in the pollen season

As the temperature rises, people with hay fever start to suffer. Those traveling in an Opel automobile can count themselves lucky. Since 2000, all Opel cars are equipped as standard with various filter systems – either original Opel particle or activated carbon filters. Tradition-rich German carmaker installs mainly activated carbon combination filters. These consist of two layers and can therefore not only keep particles out the interior, but also filter out gases such as ozone and odours, thanks to the activated carbon. Best of all, pollen is almost 100 per cent eliminated, so that buyers of both new and used Opel cars can breathe deeply while driving.

"Quality of the activated carbon combination filter surpasses the market standards in numerous areas and in some cases even meets requirements for fine particulate filters," says Product Manager, Sandra Schmickler. Filter material is water-repellent, which prevents it from freezing in winter or becoming home to bacteria. Despite the high filter performance, a good air permeability is ensured. The filter should be changed once a year.

In many cases, the activated carbon combination filter can also be retrofitted – even to older Opel models such as the Calibra or the Vectra C. Retrofitting can be a bit tricky and is therefore best carried out by an Opel dealer.

Correct behaviour in the pollen season

"In general, with high pollen concentration, you should only drive a car with the windows closed," recommends Opel’s chief medical officer, Dr. Anne-Marie Albuszies. This also benefits road safety – if drivers have to sneeze more often, risk of accidents increases. It is best to get advice beforehand about the current pollen forecast, for example, from the local weather service. "In the coming weeks, the hazel allergies will start, as well as ash and birch," explains Dr. Albuszies. Over the summer, grass becomes the problem. Hay fever can plague allergy sufferers March through October.

Motorists should also definitely refrain from medication, because the so-called antihistamines make you drowsy. Clothes should be taken off in the bathroom, not in the bedroom, adds the physician, and hair washed in the evening so that pollen does not get on the pillow. A rinse with sodium chloride in the morning and evening calms an irritated nose and a damp cloth over the eyes soothes the itching.

Best Connections: New OpelConnect Services Now Available

  • Orderable now: OpelConnect from €300 in Germany, standard with navigation systems as well as on Opel Corsa-e and Grandland X plug-in hybrid
  • All aboard: eCall, breakdown call and vehicle status
  • High comfort: “myOpel” app with remote controls especially for electrified vehicles
  • Digitised pathfinder: LIVE Navigation, Trip and Drive Management

OpelConnect

Opel is extending “OpelConnect” with new services. Since summer 2019, buyers of new Opel cars can enjoy additional peace of mind with on-board emergency and breakdown calls. Now they can benefit from numerous other “OpelConnect” services, such as vehicle status and information as well as LIVE Navigation (if the respective car is equipped with a navigation system). Customers of the new Opel electric models Corsa-e and Grandland X as plug-in hybrids can also check the battery’s state-of-charge via “OpelConnect” or programme the air conditioning and charging times. This means that Opel electrified vehicles can be defrosted and warmed up or cooled down comfortably in the summer.

Log in, select service and immediately benefit from OpelConnect

Access to the extended range of “OpelConnect” services is extremely easy. When purchasing a new car, customers simply order the connect box for an additional charge of as little as €300 in Germany. Alternatively, they can equip their new vehicle directly with the Navi 5.0 IntelliLink, Multimedia Navi or Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment systems, in which case the “OpelConnect” box is already standard. OpelConnect box and services are available for Opel models from Corsa to Crossland X and Grandland X, Combo Life and Combo Cargo to Zafira Life and Vivaro.

As an option, Opel dealers can pre-register customers with the necessary data. The new Opel owners can then open an account in the “myOpel” customer portal and activate the services in the “OpelConnect” store. They immediately get the full overview of all available free and paid services. Particularly practical: only one registration is required in future to access and use the “myOpel” app, “myOpel” customer portal and “OpelConnect” store. All three platforms share the same login data.

Standard services: security, comfort, cleverness

Following free services are part of OpelConnect as standard:
  • eCall (1): if the airbags or seatbelt tensioners are deployed in an accident, an emergency call is made automatically to the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP)2. If no answer is received from the vehicle the PSAP sends details of the accident to the rescue services, including the time of incident, the position of the crashed vehicle and the direction of travel. An emergency call can also be triggered manually by pushing the red SOS button in the ceiling above the mirror for more than two seconds.
  • Breakdown call: connects with the Opel mobility service. Important information such as location and diagnosis data, the time of the breakdown, water and oil temperatures and maintenance alerts can be sent automatically, if the customer wishes.
  • Vehicle Status & Information service: in future drivers can get information about their car via the “myOpel” app. Depending on the model, the available data includes mileage, average fuel consumption, service intervals and refills, and also a reminder if a scheduled service is approaching. In addition to the owner, the selected Opel dealer is also informed about service intervals and vehicle warnings, so that an appointment can be arranged.
  • For electrified Opel models, the “OpelConnect” range also includes e-remote control functions. Customers can use their smartphones to check the battery’s state-of-charge or programme air conditioning and charging times by remote control.
  • Drivers of vehicles with navigation system, who want to know more about their own driver profile from “OpelConnect”, can consult Trip & Drive Management. Trip duration, distance and average speed of the last trip are visible here. “Last-mile” guidance via Bluetooth offers car-to-door navigation to the destination (subject to the model).
  • LIVE Navigation (3) provides (for three years following activation) online traffic information in real time, which allows delays to be detected quickly and avoided. The system suggests alternative routes and calculates the arrival time. It also gives information about roads with heavy traffic, so that drivers can choose a less busy route. Additional services provide information about fuel prices along the route, available parking spaces and costs, the weather and points of interest such as restaurants and hotels (or in the case of electrified models, the availability of charging stations).

Optional “OpelConnect” services: e-mobility made easy, advantages for fleets

“OpelConnect” and “Free2Move” offer additional, optional, country-specific paid services. These range from Charge my Car with trip planner and charging pass for e-vehicles, to special services for business customers. “Charge My Car” enables access to thousands of charging points throughout Europe via the “Free2Move” app. To make it even easier for customers to choose the right charging point, “Free2Move” makes a preselection based on the distance to the charging point, the charging speed and the charging price of the possible public charging options.

Business customers and fleet managers can benefit from special fleet service options. The scope includes various paid service packages that provide analyses of fuel consumption and driving style or transmit vehicle warnings in real-time as well as maintenance intervals. This makes planning easier and the fleet more efficient.

Coming soon: comfort functions via “myOpel” app

The offer from “OpelConnect” will be continuously expanded in the coming months. Many vehicle functions will be controllable remotely (4) using the “myOpel” app for smartphones. Opel owners can, for example, lock or unlock their car via the app and if they forget where they left the vehicle in a large parking lot, the horn and lights can be activated via the “myOpel” app – voilà, the vehicle is found.

Also coming soon: if the car is equipped with Keyless Open & Start including digital key, the vehicle can be shared with the family. Via smartphone, the owner can allow up to five people to access the car (5).

[1] Requires free contract and agreement to vehicle location at time of order. Dependent on market-availability of “OpelConnect” services.

[2] Available in EU and EFTA countries.

[3] LIVE navigation services available free-of-charge for 36 months after activation. Payment for Live navigation services required thereafter.

[4] Remote control availability expected 2020.

[5] Availability for Opel Corsa expected 2020.

Opel is back in Russia: Opel Zafira Life and Opel Grandland X SUV at dealers as of today

  • Opel Zafira Life and Opel Grandland X SUV can be ordered in Russia as of now
  • People carrier Opel Zafira Life rolls off the production line in Kaluga
  • Opel Vivaro also to be produced in Russia soon
  • In the coming years at least one major launch every year
  • Growth based on new export markets is at the core of the strategic PACE! plan

Opel Grandland X SUV
Opel is back in Russia: First models of the Rüsselsheim-based German carmaker have arrived in the showrooms of selected dealers in major Russian cities. As of today, customers in Russia can order the successful Opel Grandland X SUV from Eisenach and the Opel Zafira Life.

Opel Zafira Life

Groupe PSA started the regular production of the family van Opel Zafira Life in its plant in Kaluga, some 200 kilometers southwest of Moscow. Opel Vivaro transporter units for the local market will also roll off the production line in Kaluga as of early 2020.

Opel Zafira Life: Production at Groupe PSA plant in Kaluga

“A significant increase of our profitable exports is one of the key pillars of our PACE! company plan. We are making further progress in this area now with our comeback in Russia,” said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller. “We will gradually increase our commitment in the country in the coming years. This includes offering a wider range of products. In the coming years, there will be at least one major Opel launch every year. Like in every market, our top priority is to grow profitably with a high level of customer satisfaction.”

“Opel is returning to Russia and this is a fantastic comeback. It is a benefit that we are able to use the plant in Kaluga and to produce locally from the start. We are happy to offer Russian clients a competitive and high-quality product which is based on the best developments of German engineering“, said Paul Willcox, CEO Eurasia region.

German brand has a long-standing tradition and an excellent reputation in Russia. With its comeback on the Russian market, Opel will strengthen the presence of Groupe PSA in the Eurasia region. Russia is a large, strategically important and attractive market with a lot of potential.

Initially, 11 dealers in major Russian cities such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Stavropol, Rostov, Ryazan, Tyumen or Nizhiny Novgorod will be Opel partners. This number will double as soon as next year and grow further going forward.

An extensive export offensive is one pillar of the Opel/Vauxhall strategic plan PACE!, which will help the company become sustainably profitable. Decision to re-enter the Russian market – after having left during the severe economic crisis in 2015 – is part of this plan aiming at the development of the brand in both Europe and global markets. Goal is to generate 10 percent of the overall Opel sales volume outside of the European core market by the mid-2020s.

To achieve this, the brand is further strengthening its presence in the export markets in Asia, Africa and South America where it is already present today and will enter more than 20 new export markets by 2022. For example, Opel will be exporting vehicles to Colombia and Ecuador already as of next year.

  • Way ahead: Opel continues fuel cell development with Zafira Life

Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller with Jürgen Klopp and New Opel Corsa-e

Opel boss Michael Lohscheller – together with special guest and Opel brand ambassador Jürgen Klopp – today opened the “OPELHAUS 120” at the 2019 IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show (public days September 12-22). Opel is going electric and the same goes for the show stand D31 in hall 11.0. In a talk with Champions League winner Klopp, Lohscheller presented breaking news about the E-offensive around LCV and eye-catching world premieres.

Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller with Jürgen Klopp and New Opel Grandland X Hybrid4

The highly efficient new Opel Corsa, the battery electric Corsa-e and Corsa-e Rally make their debut in Frankfurt, along with the first Opel plug-in hybrid, the all-wheel drive Grandland X Hybrid4 with up to 221kW (300hp) system power output (fuel consumption: WLTP 1.4-1.3 l/100km, 32-29 g/km CO2; NEDC 1.5 l/100km 35-34 g/km CO2; all figures weighted, combined and preliminary). Also making their first appearance in Frankfurt are the new Opel Astra five-door and Sports Tourer – the most efficient Astra of all time, with five engines emitting less than 100 g/km CO2and an exceptionally low drag coefficient of 0.26. Also making its premiere at a German motor show is the Opel Zafira Life that offers seating for up to nine and is packed with innovative technologies.

Opel Press conference at IAA 2019
Michael Lohscheller emphasised the importance of Opel’s electric offensive: “In 120 years of automobile production, Opel has always combined German engineering with passionate design, making pioneering technology and innovations accessible for everyone. The same goes today for electric mobility, which is why Opel has selected its most popular model, the Corsa, to finally free e-mobility from its niche existence.” That this not only applies to everyday life, but also to motor sport, is demonstrated by the premiere of the brand new Corsa-e Rally. Opel is the first carmaker to offer a battery electric car for customer rally sport, starting from next year with the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup.

Opel Press conference at IAA 2019

Not only the passenger cars, but also the LCV will be electrically driven in future. Lohscheller added: “Opel will be sustainably profitable, global and electric. By 2024, all Opel models will be electrified. Electrically driven vehicles will be especially important for the ‘last mile’ in urban areas, for example, for transportation services or businesses. This is why I am delighted to announce today that the Opel Combo Life, Combo Cargo and Zafira Life will already be electric in 2021. And the Vivaro van will be available as an electric version in the course of next year.”

Opel Zafira Life in particular will play a key role in the further development of electric mobility. In addition to bringing hybrid and battery electric vehicles onto the market, Opel also aims to take the lead in the research and development of other pioneering propulsion systems. Lohscheller therefore announced “Opel has many years of experience in fuel cell development, which is why the team in Rüsselsheim has been named as the Groupe PSA global competence centre for hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles. The first-generation Zafira already served as technology platform for HydroGen 1 to 3. We are continuing this tradition: the new Zafira Life will be the brand’s first model to feature the new generation of fuel cell powertrain.”

Next generation small car: Opel Corsa, Corsa-e and Corsa-e Rally

Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller with New Opel Corsa-e

One of this year’s IAA stars is the new 4.06-metre long Opel Corsa. The sixth generation of Opel’s bestselling small car is more modern, dynamic and efficient than ever – in every version. It offers customers the entire drive portfolio – with its particularly economical petrol and diesel engines as well as for the first time the purely battery-electric Corsa-e with a 50kWh battery pack, 100kW (136hp) output and a range of up to 330 kilometres (WLTP3). Moderate fuel consumption and an engaging drive are characteristic of all powertrain options and the exemplary emission values reach all the way to zero when driving the Corsa-e. The sporty overall impression is matched by the reduced weight – the lightest Corsa even undercuts the thousand kilo mark – the low seating position of the driver and the finely tuned chassis. All this comes with everyday suitability and combined with technologies otherwise only known from higher vehicle classes, in particular the adaptive, glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix light.

Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller with All-New Opel Corsa
Opel also makes a clear statement with the premiere of the Corsa-e Rally based on the production Corsa-e: the company is the first automobile manufacturer in the world to develop a battery-electric vehicle for customer rally sport. From mid-2020, Opel will start the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup, the first rally brand cup for electric cars in the world. Sporty, emotional and accessible to customers – a project that will point the way ahead for motor sport far beyond the borders of Germany.

Opel Grandland X Hybrid4: introducing the first plug-in hybrid from Opel

Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller with New Opel Grandland X Hybrid4
With its state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology, up to 221 kW (300 hp) system power output and all-wheel drive, the Opel Grandland X is the second example of modern, efficient electro-mobility on Opel’s IAA stand. The propulsion system of the Grandland X Hybrid4 includes a WLTP-certified 147 kW (200 hp) 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, an electric drive system with two 80 kW (109 hp) electric motors and a 13.2 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 will offer four driving modes – electric, hybrid, AWD and Sport. For example, the hybrid mode allows the car to automatically select its most efficient method of propulsion, with the possibility of switching to electric mode for zero-emission driving when reaching a city centre – enabling the car to cover up to 59km in pure electric mode with zero emissions in the WLTP3 driving cycle. Sport mode uses the combined power of the petrol engine and electric motor for higher driving dynamics. Selecting AWD mode activates the electrified rear axle for maximum traction on all kinds of roads. In order to further improve efficiency, the Grandland X Hybrid4 features a regenerative braking system to recover the energy produced under braking or deceleration.

Economical petrol powertrains: Most efficient Opel Astra ever

With the new Astra, Opel keeps its promise to focus on customers and their needs. Instead of prescribing the way forward, the automaker offers the entire drive portfolio – perfectly tailored to individual driving needs. New Opel Astra demonstrates how efficient and economical modern petrol engines can be: with a completely new generation of engines and transmissions and up to 21 per cent lower CO2 emissions, the new Astra is the most efficient ever. Opel Astra also leads the way in terms of aerodynamics. With a drag coefficient of 0.26 for the Astra hatchback as well as the Sports Tourer estate, the new compact Opel is one of the most aerodynamic cars in its class. New Opel Astra is equally exemplary in terms of comfort, assistance and infotainment systems. The portfolio ranges from an even more powerful front camera and digital rear view camera, to wireless charging for compatible smartphones and a heated windscreen.

IAA starts with the press days (September 10 - 11). The show is officially open from September 12-22 (September 12-13 are trade days). From September 14, the general public can take a close look at the new automobiles and developments every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Opel Grandland X rolls off the line in Eisenach

• Investments in Eisenach: Modernization of the location and localization of the Groupe PSA EMP2 platform
• Clear future prospects: Long-standing Opel Grandland X production
• Further step in the electrification of the Opel brand: From the beginning of 2020, Opel Grandland X will also be produced as a hybrid

Today marks the beginning of a new era for the Groupe PSA plant in Eisenach: Production of the compact SUV Opel Grandland X in Thuringia has officially started. Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller and Yann Vincent, Groupe PSA Vice President Manufacturing & Supply Chain, opened the extensively rebuilt assembly line at the site on Wednesday in the presence of Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow.

"Today is a great day for all our employees here in Eisenach, for the entire region and for Opel customers. With the production of the Opel Grandland X we open a new chapter for the location. Because the car is not only in a growing vehicle segment at the start, but will be produced as a hybrid version here from next year and thus contributes to the electrification of Opel. Popularity of the Opel Grandland X has increased steadily in recent years and we are sure that this model will create a sustainable future for the plant, "said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller.

Thuringia's Prime Minister Ramelow welcomed the clear future prospects for the employees: "We are pleased that the company has invested in the location. Factory belongs to Eisenach like the Wartburg and is an important economic factor - far beyond the region. "

Opel Grandland X: Assembly in Eisenach plant
Conversion work at the Eisenach plant, which localized the Groupe PSA EMP2 platform, started in May of this year. In the past few months, almost no stone was left on the other. Among other things, the "wedding" - the connection of chassis and body to a single unit - has been completely modernized, and a more efficient and environmentally friendly painting process has been introduced.

Opel Grandland X: Assembly in Eisenach plant

Yann Vincent thanked the staff in Eisenach for their efforts in the extensive conversion and training phase: "Team has shown a high level of commitment and prepared Eisenach for the future. • Strengthened position in Europe with an increased market share of +0.3pt
  • Start of production at the Kenitra [1] plant to support commercial offensive in Middle East & Africa
  • Ongoing electrification on the launch pad with 9 [2] electrified models

Despite the decline of the global automotive markets for this first half, our commercial teams have managed to increase market shares in several countries, especially in Europe and Africa. Rigorous deployment of our Core Model and Core Techno strategies is decisive asset to manage profitable sales and enhance customer satisfaction.» says Carlos Tavares, Chairman of the Groupe PSA Managing Board.

Electrification offensive is mastered with the aim to have a 100% electrified [3] range from 2025

All-electric: New Opel Corsa-e

Groupe PSA aims to be a major player in electrified mobility with all new models coming in a hybrid plug-in or an all-electric version : DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE, Peugeot e-208 and e-2008 and Opel Corsa-e in 100% electric version, and DS 7 CROSSBACK E-TENSE 4X4, Peugeot 3008 HYbrid & HYbrid4, Peugeot 508 & 508 SW HYbrid, Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 and Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid in hybrid plug-in version.

New Opel Grandland X Hybrid4

Groupe PSA is also preparing a full electrified LCV range by 2025, starting with Citroën Berlingo and Peugeot Partner, already available in an electric version. New electrified generation of these vehicles for Peugeot, Citroën and Opel/Vauxhall will be available by 2021. Group presented last April a preview of the electrified versions of Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper at the Birmingham Commercial Vehicle Show. It also announced an electrified version for 2020 in the medium van segment.

Fourteen new electrified vehicles will be launched in just two years.

Europe: profitable growth

In a declining market over the first half year (-2.4%), the Group strengthened its position by achieving a 17.4% market share, growing in all main markets, particularly in Italy (+1.1pts), France (+0.7pt), the United Kingdom (+0.2pt), Germany (+0.1pt), and Spain (+0.1pt).

Performance is driven by the excellent results of Citroën, which has achieved an eight-year sales record with the strongest growth within the Top 12 brands. As a result, the brand has gained 0.3 point in market share in Europe, thanks in particular to the success of its SUV range (C5 Aircross and C3 Aircross).

Opel / Vauxhall has continued its development since last autumn and grew slightly its market share. This market share grew among other markets in France (0.2 pt), UK (+0.2 pt) and Italy (+0.7 pt), while the brand at the same time kept its focus on the deployment of profitable sales. Combo, Crossland X, Grandland X carry most of this performance and Opel / Vauxhall will benefit from the launch of the new Corsa in the second half of the year.

Peugeot market share is stable in Europe. Beyond the continuous success of its SUVs 3008/5008, Peugeot is also progressing well thanks to the award-winning 508 family with the launch of the new 508 SW: 508 sedan is 1st in France since its launch. Peugeot also beats its previous LCV sales record in the 1st semester.

DS Automobiles confirms the brand's sustainable growth (+1.7% vs 2018 H1, and +16% in Q2 vs 2018 Q2) with DS 7 CROSSBACK - leader in SUV Premium in France during the first half - and DS 3 CROSSBACK, launched in May in France and number 1 in terms of registrations of premium SUVs in June in France.

Groupe PSA is also maintaining its leadership in LCVs with a 24.7% market share.

Middle East – Africa: operational industrial footprint

Groupe PSA market share increased in its main markets: Morocco (+4.7pts), Egypt (+3.5pts), Algeria (+2.7pts) and Turkey (+0.5pt). The evolution of sales is impacted by the wind down from Iran [4] and the Turkish market (-44.8%) downturn.

With the start of production at the Kenitra plant in Morocco, the Group will be able to produce models that meet customers’ expectations and achieve its commercial ambitions in the region.

China & South East Asia: improving business model in China

In a declining Chinese market, sales are down 62.1%. DS maintained its market shares. The Group is working on action plans with its partners to tackle current issues and lower the breakeven point of the JVs.

Electric offensive is underway with the launch of Peugeot 508L PHEV, as well as BEV Peugeot 2008 and DS 3 CROSSBACK in 2020.

Exports from the Malaysian hub NAM [5] are now starting for Peugeot 3008 and 5008

Latin America: headwinds in Argentina

Group sales have decreased by 29.3% in Latin America with a strong hit of Argentinean market downturn (-50.3%). However, the group stabilized its market share in Brazil driven by the success of the SUV C4 Cactus and the LCV offensive. It has maintained its position in Chile and improved in Mexico in decreasing markets. Opel made a strong progress in the region increasing its market share.

Some encouraging trend results from the success of SUV models and recent launches: Citroën C5 Aircross and Peugeot 2008 and completed by Citroën C4, Peugeot Rifter and soon DS 3 CROSSBACK. LCV offensive is also ongoing with the recent launches of the new Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo and Opel Combo.

India-Pacific: sales growth (+2.3%)

Recurring success of the Group in Japan continues with sales up 16%. Groupe PSA achieved another milestone by announcing in April the launch of the Citroën brand in India and starting the production of gearboxes (Hosur plant) with its partner AVTEC Ltd (a CK Birla Group Co.).

Eurasia: prepare the relaunch of the Opel brand

New Opel Zafira Life
Facing a downward trend of the Russian market (-2.4%), Groupe PSA market share is slightly declining (-0.2pt). Group is launching DS Automobiles in Ukraine with the first DS Store to open in July. Group is also preparing the relaunch of the Opel brand in Russia starting with the Zafira Life and the Grandland X, first models to be available in few months.

Premiere of O-Team Zafira Life in Oschersleben

  • Spectacular appearance: cool looks, finely honed technology, high-class interior
  • Opel becomes O-Team: 1980s US TV series is source of inspiration
  • Imitating allowed: all modifications approved by TÜV

O-Team Zafira Life

Tens of thousands of Opel fans will once again descend on Oschersleben this weekend to celebrate the iconic Rüsselsheim brand. In addition to beautiful vintage cars and the 120 Years special models, Opel will also present a very special vehicle: the Opel Zafira Life, the fourth generation of the flexible multi-purpose van, will make its German premiere in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben. But that’s not all. Opel will also bring another version to the racetrack, which has even more to offer: the “O-Team Zafira Life” concept car. As the name suggests, the car is inspired by the van that transported the crew in the cult US TV action and adventure series of the 1980s.

“O-Team Zafira Life” – the “O”, of course, stands for Opel – rivals the TV-original in every way: it features big wheels, the front bars and the big aerofoil, while the special colour scheme is bright neon-yellow instead of red. “O-Team Zafira Life” also makes an acoustic statement: the roaring V8 sound leaves no doubt about this car’s confident attitude. The fans of the iconic brand are likely to be just as enthusiastic as the fans of the TV series.

Spectacular “action” in design, interior layout and technology

Team from Opel Special Vehicles, that usually builds promotional vehicles and show cars, selected the six-seat Zafira Life “medium” with long wheelbase and full equipment as the basis for the “O” version. Its powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine delivers 130 kW (177hp) and 400 Nm maximum torque (NEDC fuel consumption1: urban 6.5-6.2 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.4-5.0 l/100 km, combined 5.8-5.4 l/100 km, 151-143 g/km CO2; WLTP fuel consumption2: combined 8.1-7.0 l/100 km, 213-183 g/km CO2). The power is transmitted to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, guaranteeing lots of driving fun! Exterior colour scheme of dark blue, white and neon-yellow (which also sets the tone for the interior) is derived from the much-acclaimed Opel GT X Experimental. Spectacular appearance is rounded off by the matching window decals, the unique, specially made roof spoiler, the front bars and the side-sill extensions.

Sound of the “O Team Zafira Life” is really spine-tingling, as the technical team has built in a sound module with the vocal chords of a V8 petrol engine. A tailpipe in OPC-design was also added underneath the vehicle. An additional amplifier and high-performance loudspeakers transform the interior into a concert hall with 800 watts of system power.

In the action sequences of the TV series, the tough team mastered even the most spectacular stunts and jumps with their vehicle. Of course, the chassis of the “O-Team Zafira Life” concept vehicle is also designed to handle difficult jobs with maximum precision and at top speed: lowered bodywork, air suspension (can be lowered to parking position via remote control), four-piston brakes with 380-millimetre discs in front and 20-inch light-alloy wheels from BBS plus Michelin Cup 2 tyres ensure that the crew has perfect control and optimum traction when on the road.

Thanks to the high-quality interior of Rüsselsheim’s “O-Team Zafira Life”, passengers are relaxed when they arrive at the scene of action: driver and co-driver enjoy the unmistakable performance sports seats from the Insignia GSi (NEDC fuel consumption Opel Insignia GSi 2.0 BiTurbo Diesel with 154 kW/210 hp and eight-speed automatic transmission1: urban 9.6 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.6 l/100 km, combined 7.1 l/100 km, 187-186 g/km CO2; WLTP fuel consumption2: combined 7.8-7.4 l/100 km, 204-193 g/km CO2), in both the second and third rows the crew members will find two rotating “Captain's Chairs”, all upholstered in fine leather and Alcantara.

As spectacular as the show talent of the “O-Team Zafira Life” is – it is not just a show car. All technical changes have been approved by TÜV – so it's quite possible that more “O-Team“ versions will soon be on Germany’s roads. What is certain is that at the sight of this modern version, the boss of the TV series team would light up a big cigar and say: “I love it when a plan comes together“.
