High-Tech All-Wheel Drive with Opel Grandland Hybrid4, Opel Insignia and Opel Insignia GSi

  • Fun and safety in winter: Opel flagships with advanced four-wheel drive systems
  • Extra efficient: Opel Grandland Hybrid4 1 with up to 300 hp system power
  • Optimum AWD: Opel Insignia and Opel Insignia GSi 1 with torque vectoring

New Opel Grandland Hybrid4

Opel has the ideal all-wheel drive cars for this year’s winter sports season: new Opel Grandland Hybrid4 – the top-of-the-range SUV (WLTP fuel consumption1 1.3-1.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 31-29 g/km; weighted, combined) – Opel Insignia (WLTP fuel consumption1 6.7-5.7 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 175-149 g/km; weighted, combined) and the thoroughbred Opel Insignia GSi (WLTP fuel consumption1 8.8-7.9 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 200-179 g/km; weighted, combined) not only make driving on ice and snow great fun; the state-of-the-art all-wheel drive systems of the Opel flagships also offer high safety. Opel customers can choose from an innovative electric AWD SUV or a limousine or Sports Tourer estate with torque vectoring AWD.

New Opel Grandland Hybrid4: Best of both worlds

Opel Grandland Hybrid4: Combines the power of a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors for a system power output of up to 221 kW (300 hp)

New Opel Grandland Hybrid4 combines the power of a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors for a system power output of up to 221 kW (300 hp). Electric unit consists of two electric motors at the front and rear axles. Power of the front electric drive corresponds to 81 kW (110 hp) and that of the rear 83 kW (113 hp). Front electric motor transfers its power to the front wheels via an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission. Second electric motor and the differential are integrated in the rear axle, which turns Opel Grandland Hybrid4 into a permanent all-wheel drive vehicle with optimum traction. Also, the high torque of the electric motors is available right from the first squeeze of the accelerator, delivering optimum traction on slippery surfaces. Maximum speed of the electric plug-in hybrid is 235 km/h.

Four Opel Grandland drive modes: Traction for hills, efficiency for downtown

With the Opel Grandland Hybrid4, drivers can choose between four different driving modes depending on their preferences and requirements:

In “All-Wheel Drive” mode, Opel Grandland Hybrid4 is driven by the front and rear wheels.

  • “Sport” mode combines the power of the combustion engine and the electric motor for an especially dynamic driving style.
  • In “Electric” mode, the Grandland Hybrid4 is driven purely by electricity. In most cases drive is delivered by the rear electric motor, plus the front motor when the driver demands more power by pressing the accelerator. On kick-down, the combustion engine is temporarily additionally engaged for maximum power. Maximum speed when driven purely electrically is 135 km/h.
  • “Hybrid” mode focuses on optimising the vehicle's fuel consumption. Combustion engine and electric motor(s) operate together or alternately, depending on driving conditions and driving style.

Regenerative braking captures kinetic energy during deceleration that would otherwise be dissipated as heat. The customer can choose from two recuperation modes that turn the electric motors into generators, so that electrical energy can be returned to the 13.2 kWh battery and stored.

Opel Insignia GSi: Twinster AWD and FlexRide suspension

Opel Insignia GSi

Opel Insignia with 128 kW (174 hp) turbo-diesel and the ultra-dynamic Opel Insignia GSi with 169 kW (230 hp) direct-injection petrol turbo feature state-of-the-art Twinster all-wheel drive with a rear drive module that uses a twin clutch system without differential. Torque goes to one or both of the rear wheels independently, enabling torque-vectoring capability across the car’s full performance range. When cornering, higher torque goes to the outside rear wheel. Opel Insignia as Grand Sport limousine and Sports Tourer estate therefore turn in with even more precision, reacting even more spontaneously to inputs from the driver.

Opel Insignia GSi: Twinster All-Wheel Drive with a rear drive module that uses a twin clutch system without differential

Opel Insignia with AWD comes as standard with mechatronic FlexRide adaptive suspension, which adapts shock absorbers and steering in fractions of a second. In addition, FlexRide changes the characteristic of the accelerator as well as the shift-points of the eight-speed (Insignia) or nine-speed (GSi) automatic transmission. Driver can choose between the driving modes “Standard”, “Tour”, “Sport” and – exclusively for the GSi – “Competition”. A double-press of the “ESP off” switch enables particularly skilled drivers to explore the outer limits of the Insignia GSi’s driving dynamics, unassisted by ESP. For an even more active driving experience, the nine-speed automatic transmission is operable via paddles on the steering wheel.

With its advanced Twinster all-wheel drive and FlexRide adaptive suspension, Opel Insignia is at home on snow-covered mountain passes as well as on wintry country roads.

[1] Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures mentioned comply with the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). WLTP replaces the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), which was the test procedure used previously.

New Opel Insignia GSi

New Opel Insignia celebrates its world premiere at the Brussels Motor Show (January 9-19). For the first time, in addition to the Grand Sport limousine and the Sports Tourer estate, the new sharp design of the sporty GSi can be seen at the Brussels show: the vertical front openings in sabre-tooth look and the dynamic front apron are unmistakable. GSi sprints into the New Year with a new 169 kW (230 hp) 2.0 liter turbo petrol engine and new nine-speed automatic transmission, as well as an electro-hydraulic brake booster, FlexRide mechatronic suspension and Twinster four-wheel drive with torque vectoring (fuel consumption limousine according to NEDC 1: urban 8.9 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.8 l/100 km, combined 6.9 l/100 km, 161 g/km CO2, fuel consumption according to WLTP 2: combined 8.5-8.3 l/100 km, 198-193 g / km CO2).

Up to 18 per cent lower fuel consumption: New Opel Insignia in top form

New Opel Insignia range
Flagship of the tradition-rich German brand debuts as GSi, Grand Sport and Sports Tourer with newly developed, extra-efficient petrol and diesel engines. In addition, new low-friction gearboxes further reduce fuel consumption and at the same time increase comfort. Insignia customers get either a six-speed manual gearbox, a particularly economical, stepless transmission or an eight or nine-speed automatic. New Opel Insignia’s aerodynamics are further improved by an active full-face shutter. Compared to its predecessor, NEDC fuel consumption is lowered by up to 18 percent, while CO2 emissions are as low as around 100g/km. New Opel Insignia is therefore one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its segment.

Opel designers have further improved the Insignia’s high-quality interior. Ergonomically certified AGR seats with many comfort functions are now available in various fabric and leather upholsteries, as well as in Alcantara. For those who value comfort and a classic appearance, the Elegance and Ultimate equipment ranges are the perfect choice. Enthusiastic drivers will be thrilled by the new Insignia GS Line and GSi.

In addition, there are state-of-the-art safety and assistance systems, most notably the new adaptive IntelliLux LED Pixel Light. It now has a total of 168 LED elements – 84 per headlamp! They provide the Insignia driver with ultra-slim headlamps as well as the best vision and react even faster and more precisely than before, without dazzling anyone in front or oncoming traffic.

“We are proud of our new flagship. Opel Insignia looks fantastic, featuring class-leading technologies such as the IntelliLux LED Pixel Light, fuel-efficient petrol and diesel engines, adaptive FlexRide suspension and outstanding wellness seats. GSi is again the top model in the series and as engaging to drive as a real sports car”, said Opel CEO, Michael Lohscheller.

High grip and agility for maximum fun-to-drive

New Opel Insignia GSi is for those who appreciate the really special. The sporty four-wheel drive with torque vectoring is unique in this segment. In the AWD mode, two clutches replace a conventional rear differential and deliver the perfect power transfer per wheel in every driving situation. With this technology, the new Opel Insignia GSi is more agile in curves, offers the best cornering and stands out with excellent traction. For an even more active driving experience, the new nine-speed automatic transmission can be operated by the paddles on the steering wheel.

Opel Insignia GSi got its finishing touches on the legendary Nürburgring “Nordschleife”. The dynamically tuned chassis offers extremely high grip. Powerful Brembo four-piston brakes (with red calipers) and the direct steering have been further improved.

With its electro-hydraulic brake booster, the Insignia is already today a platform for technology that will be required for automated driving in the future. Integrated “eBoost” system is a component for “braking by wire”, which dispenses with the need for separate ABS/ESP modules, vacuum lines and vacuum pumps etc. As vacuum is generated by an electric motor instead of the engine, fuel consumption is further reduced. Pressure is built up quicker and brake feel is improved. Also, when ABS is activated, “eBoost” operates more quietly than on conventional braking systems.

Opel Insignia GSi comes as standard with mechatronic FlexRide suspension, which adapts shock absorbers and steering in fractions of a second. In addition, FlexRide changes the characteristic of the accelerator as well as the shift-points of the nine-speed automatic transmission. Driver can choose between the driving modes Standard, Tour, Sport and – exclusively for the GSi – Competition.

New engines and transmissions: Frugal yet lively

With the new Insignia, Opel has reduced the complexity and at the same time improved the offer for the customer. While the predecessor had petrol and diesel engines from three different engine families, all three and four-cylinder engines of the now belong to a single new generation. The 1.4-liter petrol engine with 107 kW (145 hp) and the 1.5 liter diesel with 90 kW (122 hp) form the basis (see table for all consumption figures).

Three-cylinder units are up to 50 kilograms lighter than their predecessors in the previous model and are also used in the new Opel Astra. Above them in the Insignia range come a 2.0 liter four-cylinder diesel (introduction later this year) and a 2.0 petrol engine with 147 kW (200 hp) – 169 kW (230 hp) in the case of the GSi. 2.0 liter petrol units are also the first Opel engines with cylinder deactivation. Unless the driver needs high power, variable camshaft control deactivates two cylinders and thus significantly reduces fuel consumption.

New Opel Insignia’s full-face active shutter further improves fuel efficiency by closing the top as well as the bottom of the grille. By combining thermal, electrical and aerodynamic considerations, intelligent control strategies for opening and closing the upper and lower portions of the grille can enable highly efficient driving under a variety of real-life conditions. The full-face shutter also delivers thermal advantages by delaying cooling down after switching off the engine, or by accelerating the engine warm-up after a cold start, which especially in winter provides significant benefits in fuel consumption and cabin heating comfort.

IntelliLux LED Pixel Light: precision with 168 LEDs

New Opel Insignia is equipped exclusively with full LED light systems, from highly energy-efficient LED headlamps to the new adaptive IntelliLux LED Pixel Light, which features a class-leading total of 168 LED elements, instead of the previous 32. The main beam is adjusted seamlessly in milliseconds by two control units – one connected to the front camera and the other in the headlamp. The high number of continuously reacting LED elements results in a seamless adaptation of the light beam. Illuminated area is larger than before, approaching or preceding traffic is “cut out” more precisely. Result is optimum vision in every situation, without glare for other road users.

New Opel Insignia GSi - IntelliLux LED Pixel Light
Opel has further improved the autobahn light of the newest IntelliLux LED. In left turns, the light beam reaches further to the left, so that the driver can more easily see roadside signs. When turning right in autobahn mode, the light beam shines further to the right, in order to avoid glare for oncoming traffic. The other light functions range from curve and bad weather, to town, country roads and autobahn, as well as optimised light for parking.

State-of-the-art connectivity and assistance systems

Typically for a flagship, Opel Insignia features a full range of assistance and infotainment systems. A new digital rear view camera improves rearward vision. Safety when reversing out of parking spaces can be further increased by the optional rear cross traffic alert. Additional assistance systems include forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian protection, lane keep assist, side blind zone alert, adaptive cruise control with emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, advanced park assist and head-up display. Adaptive cruise control maintains the gap to the vehicle ahead through automatic braking and acceleration. With automatic transmission. the radar-based system can brake the Insignia to a standstill and follow the vehicle ahead in traffic jams.

Portfolio of infotainment systems compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto extend from Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi to Multimedia Navi Pro. The top-of-the-line unit features numerous Connected Navigation services such as “Trip & Drive Management” and “Live navigation”, which provides online traffic information in real time. allowing delays to be detected quickly and avoided. Compatible smartphones can be charged wirelessly.  When e-Call is installed, an emergency call is automatically sent if the seatbelt tensioners or airbags are deployed. Alternatively, help can be actively summoned in seconds by simply pressing the red button.

Premiere of O-Team Zafira Life in Oschersleben

  • Spectacular appearance: cool looks, finely honed technology, high-class interior
  • Opel becomes O-Team: 1980s US TV series is source of inspiration
  • Imitating allowed: all modifications approved by TÜV

O-Team Zafira Life

Tens of thousands of Opel fans will once again descend on Oschersleben this weekend to celebrate the iconic Rüsselsheim brand. In addition to beautiful vintage cars and the 120 Years special models, Opel will also present a very special vehicle: the Opel Zafira Life, the fourth generation of the flexible multi-purpose van, will make its German premiere in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben. But that’s not all. Opel will also bring another version to the racetrack, which has even more to offer: the “O-Team Zafira Life” concept car. As the name suggests, the car is inspired by the van that transported the crew in the cult US TV action and adventure series of the 1980s.

“O-Team Zafira Life” – the “O”, of course, stands for Opel – rivals the TV-original in every way: it features big wheels, the front bars and the big aerofoil, while the special colour scheme is bright neon-yellow instead of red. “O-Team Zafira Life” also makes an acoustic statement: the roaring V8 sound leaves no doubt about this car’s confident attitude. The fans of the iconic brand are likely to be just as enthusiastic as the fans of the TV series.

Spectacular “action” in design, interior layout and technology

Team from Opel Special Vehicles, that usually builds promotional vehicles and show cars, selected the six-seat Zafira Life “medium” with long wheelbase and full equipment as the basis for the “O” version. Its powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine delivers 130 kW (177hp) and 400 Nm maximum torque (NEDC fuel consumption1: urban 6.5-6.2 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.4-5.0 l/100 km, combined 5.8-5.4 l/100 km, 151-143 g/km CO2; WLTP fuel consumption2: combined 8.1-7.0 l/100 km, 213-183 g/km CO2). The power is transmitted to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, guaranteeing lots of driving fun! Exterior colour scheme of dark blue, white and neon-yellow (which also sets the tone for the interior) is derived from the much-acclaimed Opel GT X Experimental. Spectacular appearance is rounded off by the matching window decals, the unique, specially made roof spoiler, the front bars and the side-sill extensions.

Sound of the “O Team Zafira Life” is really spine-tingling, as the technical team has built in a sound module with the vocal chords of a V8 petrol engine. A tailpipe in OPC-design was also added underneath the vehicle. An additional amplifier and high-performance loudspeakers transform the interior into a concert hall with 800 watts of system power.

In the action sequences of the TV series, the tough team mastered even the most spectacular stunts and jumps with their vehicle. Of course, the chassis of the “O-Team Zafira Life” concept vehicle is also designed to handle difficult jobs with maximum precision and at top speed: lowered bodywork, air suspension (can be lowered to parking position via remote control), four-piston brakes with 380-millimetre discs in front and 20-inch light-alloy wheels from BBS plus Michelin Cup 2 tyres ensure that the crew has perfect control and optimum traction when on the road.

Thanks to the high-quality interior of Rüsselsheim’s “O-Team Zafira Life”, passengers are relaxed when they arrive at the scene of action: driver and co-driver enjoy the unmistakable performance sports seats from the Insignia GSi (NEDC fuel consumption Opel Insignia GSi 2.0 BiTurbo Diesel with 154 kW/210 hp and eight-speed automatic transmission1: urban 9.6 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.6 l/100 km, combined 7.1 l/100 km, 187-186 g/km CO2; WLTP fuel consumption2: combined 7.8-7.4 l/100 km, 204-193 g/km CO2), in both the second and third rows the crew members will find two rotating “Captain's Chairs”, all upholstered in fine leather and Alcantara.

As spectacular as the show talent of the “O-Team Zafira Life” is – it is not just a show car. All technical changes have been approved by TÜV – so it's quite possible that more “O-Team“ versions will soon be on Germany’s roads. What is certain is that at the sight of this modern version, the boss of the TV series team would light up a big cigar and say: “I love it when a plan comes together“.

Opel Grandland X “120 Years”: Seating Comfort has Long Tradition

120 Years of Opel Automobile Production

  • Anniversary model: Bestselling Opel Grandland X special model with leading technologies and comfort
  • Learning curve: From box seat to ergonomic seat with massage function in 120 years
  • Experts’ approval: Seats in Opel models certified by Campaign for Healthier Backs
  • Second-row comfort: Heated rear seats in Opel Insignia, Astra and Grandland X SUV

Opel Grandland X “120 Years”

Opel has been developing and producing automobiles since 1899. “Democratise top technologies and make them accessible to everyone” has been the motto since day one. Driven by this commitment, the automaker is celebrating “120 Years of Opel Automobile Production” this year. Through the decades, Opel has introduced numerous technical advancements and made them accessible to the general public. These include efficient engines and superior chassis, as well as state-of-the-art assistance systems. At the same time, Opel has always made the comfort of drivers and passengers a top priority. After all, motorists want one thing above all else: a comfortable and relaxed journey. Seats play a key role; they are the interface between man and machine. Accordingly, Opel also focused on seat development at an early stage, as seats with a perfect ergonomic shape increase not only comfort, but also safety. Both aspects have been at the top of the German carmaker’s agenda since the introduction of the first automobiles – after all, the 1899 Opel “Patentmotorwagen” already had leather seats.

The list of seating-milestones in 120 years of Opel engineering ranges from the introduction of longitudinal adjustment in 1931 and the legendary reclining seats in the Opel Kapitän, to height adjustment in the Opel Monza and Senator in the late 1970s and the Flex7 seating system in the first Opel Zafira exactly 20 years ago. Then in 2003 the first ergonomic seat certified by Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. (Campaign for Healthier Backs) made its Opel premiere in the mid-size Signum. Today, models like the Opel Astra, Opel Insignia and Opel Grandland X can be ordered with the award-winning, continuously developed ergonomic active seats.

Opel Grandland X - Ergonomic active seats
A prime example of top technologies and first-class comfort for everyone is the Opel Grandland X “120 Years” (fuel consumption with 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo, 96kW/130hp, six-speed manual transmission and Start/Stop according to NEDC1: urban 6.1 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.9-4.8 l/100 km, combined 5.3-5.2 l/100 km, 121-120 g/km CO2; fuel consumption according to WLTP2: combined 7.1-6.5 l/100 km, 161-147 g/km CO2) available from €29,200 (RRP incl. VAT in Germany). The anniversary model variant not only has assistance systems such as Cruise Control with intelligent speed limiter, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Hill Start Assist, Rear View Camera and Park Pilot for front and rear as standard on board. Numerous comfort features also ensure a relaxed ride. These include the multi-adjustable comfort driver and passenger seats as well as multi-stage seat heating for the front seats, heatable leather steering wheel and Solar Protect heat protection glazing in the rear. With just a glance at the exterior, the door sills with OPEL lettering, 17-inch light-alloy wheels in 5 double-spoke design and the “120 Years” logo immediately identify the Grandland X anniversary model. Comfort can be increased even further with the optional ergonomic active front seats – also in leather and with seat ventilation – and seat heating for the two outer seats in the second row. Opel thus offers first-class seating comfort for all passengers.

Early comfort: “Lutzmann” with soft leather seat bench

At the end of the 19th century, people could not even dream of such technologically sophisticated seats – the focus then was on engine-power, comfort played a subordinate role. The cars still resembled carriages, as did the seats. For instance the Opel Patentmotorwagen “System Lutzmann” of 1899: not just the entire car, but also the seats with their bolt-upright position were reminiscent of a carriage. Of course, there were no possibilities to adjust the seats yet. So instead, Opel focused on another detail that was a big comfort plus at the time: the bench seat was already luxuriously upholstered with leather.

Thirty years later in 1929, the seat in the Opel 4/20 “Moonlight Roadster” was still a rigidly fixed bench. However, it was positioned considerably lower and allowed passengers to stretch their legs out in front of them, similar to today. In the four-door model and limousine the front seats could be folded down. The next development step quickly followed with the Opel 1.8 Litre: the front seats could now be adjusted longitudinally. Brochures at the time stated: “The adjustable front seats are like club chairs: deep and cosy, with comfortable backrests.” The 1.2 Litre Regent had another standout feature: “Wide, comfortable, inviting front and rear seats. The large boot is accessed by simply folding the rear backrest forward.” So comfort combined with practical benefits was already on the agenda in 1931.

“Car seats like this were already on quite a few wish lists”: Opel Kapitän, GT and Monza

From the early 1950s the seats of the Opel Olympia were fixed to a metal frame and also longitudinally adjustable. To facilitate entry for rear passengers, the front seat backrests could be folded forward. In 1956, the Opel Kapitän L took things a step further with extra seating comfort. “The occupant of each individually adjustable front seat can recline the backrest seamlessly all the way to a horizontal position, simply by pulling a lever and leaning back,” said the description. The so-called “relax” or “reclining” seat was born. “A slight pull is all it takes to ‘customise’ the seat position.” The rails the seats slid on were mounted on an incline. This meant that the height of the seat position changed according to the longitudinal adjustment. Already back then, the significance of seats for safety was highlighted: “Especially when cornering, you really feel how these seats have the right shape and how much support they provide. The result is a pleasant and secure driving feeling that you never want to miss again.”

In 1968 the Opel GT went into series production. This legendary model sparkled with its bold sporty styling – both exterior and interior. Passengers made themselves comfortable in seats with a sporty shape. Extended seat cushions and a significantly improved shoulder section showed the direction of development. From the late 1960s, Opel gradually equipped various models with optional headrests – such as the Kadett B, Rekord C, Commodore A and Olympia A. The next important development step came in 1978: in line with the credo “Comfort is a function of technology”“, Opel introduced the height-adjustable seat in various trim variants of the Monza A and Senator A. “To guarantee every driver – regardless of height or size – their optimum personal seat position and visibility, the driver’s seat can be seamlessly adjusted in terms of longitudinal position, backrest tilt (…) and in the Senator CD even seat height”, was the description of adjustment possibilities in the Opel brochure.

Flexibility redefined: Flex7 seating system in the Opel Zafira

In the 1990s, the seats in the Opel Omega B were electrically adjustable as an option. The reinforced rear seat backrests and side airbags made an important contribution to passive safety; elaborate crash tests with a payload were conducted for the first time. Depending on the trim version, all three rear seats came with three-point seatbelts and headrests.

Opel presented a global innovation in 1999 with the introduction of the Zafira compact van featuring its on-board Flex7 seating system. For the first time, a compact seven-seat people-carrier could be transformed, in no time at all, into a two-seat transporter with a large loading area – without having to remove the seats and cumbersomely store them outside the vehicle.

Thanks to a clever mechanism, both the individual seats in the third row could be folded down flush with the floor of the boot. Then the seat cushions and backrests of the second row could be folded down, pushed up against the first row seats and secured there. This transformed the family van for seven into a load-carrier with up to 1,700 litres of transport volume (VDA – German Automotive Industry Association – standard).

With this concept, Opel raised flexibility to the next level and continued further developing it up to the lounge seating system with transversally adjustable outer seats in the middle row in the Zafira Tourer.

Good for the back: AGR-certified ergonomic seats from 2003

Relaxed travelling not only increases the well-being and safety of passengers, it is also an important health factor. The “right” seat is not only comfortable, it also supports the occupant’s back. Opel has a pioneering role amongst volume manufacturers in this area.

The company was the first automaker to offer back-friendly seats in the mid-size class in 2003, with the first AGR seal of approval for the Opel Signum. The experts for healthy seating awarded the 18-way electrically adjustable, multi-contour driver‘s seat in the Opel Vectra/Opel Signum their seal of approval.

From this moment on, the ergonomically superior seats set off on their road to success.

In 2008, the standard comfort seats in the Opel Insignia offered generous adjustment setting ranges – 65 mm (electric) for height and 270 mm longitudinally – achieving absolute best marks here. The premium driver’s seat was AGR certified.

And in 2012 the Opel Meriva was the first series production car to receive the coveted AGR seal of approval for its overall ergonomic concept: FlexDoors with an opening angle of 84 degrees, FlexSpace system, AGR certified ergonomic seats and the FlexFix bicycle carrier.

Opel also made the especially back-friendly seats available in the compact class. For the first time, the AGR-certified premium ergonomic seats in the Astra generation introduced in 2015 were not just multi-adjustable in height, longitude and tilt (including side bolster adjustment) they were also optionally available with further comfort features such as massage, ventilation and memory function.

In addition to the current Astra and Insignia variants, drivers and front-seat passengers in the top Opel Grandland X SUV can also look forward to exemplary seating comfort.

But they are not alone. All three models also feature second-row seating comfort, as optional seat heating is available for both front and outer rear seats.

Performance sports seats developed by Opel for the Insignia GSi driving machine (fuel consumption Opel Insignia GSi with 2.0 BiTurbo Diesel and 154kW/210hp according to NEDC1: urban 9.6 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.6 l/100 km, combined 7.1 l/100 km, 187-186 g/km CO2; fuel consumption according to WLTP2: combined 7.8-7.4 l/100 km, 204-193 g/km CO2) currently represents the ultimate in sportiness and ergonomics. AGR-certified Opel performance sport seat combines outstanding lateral support with top long-distance comfort and offers all the comfort features from the Insignia model line. The integral seat in the GSi also comes with ventilation, heating, a massage function (driver’s seat) and adjustable side bolsters. These features are complemented by the high backrest with integrated headrest. The air cushions of the four-way lumbar support along with the variable side bolsters are also activated electrically. Developed by Opel experts for healthy seating, the performance seat is unique in its combination of sporty lateral support and comfort features.

Future of Opel infotainment: New generation Multimedia and Multimedia Navi Pro systems make their debut in the Insignia flagship.

Seamless connectivity has become a “must-have” for modern automobiles. Customers nowadays expect to be able to use online services while driving. Opel has received many prizes, such as the “Connected Car Award”, for its major contributions to these developments. Their rapid growth is predicted to accelerate well into the next decade. The Rüsselsheim brand has prepared itself for this next phase of connectivity and in-car entertainment with a new generation of infotainment systems. They will make their debut later this year in the Insignia flagship model range.

The new Multimedia and Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment systems of the Insignia will consolidate Opel’s position as a leading player in infotainment and connectivity. The systems are not only state-of-the-art in terms of functionality, they are also stylish and intuitive to use. Customers enjoy a large colour touchscreen, up to eight inches in size. Additionally, drivers benefit from a high-resolution, clearly arranged Driver Information Cluster that with the Multimedia Navi Pro can be enhanced by an optional head-up display.

Whether connecting by conventional technology such as Bluetooth or USB, or by state-of-the-art phone integration via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (which Opel was one of the first carmakers to introduce) the Insignia’s new infotainment systems extend Opel’s leadership in in-car entertainment and connectivity. In addition to AM/FM radio as standard, the top sound quality of DAB+ is available as an option. Up to two smartphones can be paired simultaneously.

The top-level Multimedia Navi Pro represents a new generation of Opel on-board navigation systems for the future. New features include connected navigation services for optimum points of interest and destination searches, as well as Live Traffic, real-time fuel prices, parking information according to the destination and online map updates. The additional comfort offered by 3D-map navigation, continuous zoom and smooth scrolling make each journey relaxing and enjoyable.

New Opel AGR Performance Sport seats: Tailored for the Opel Insignia GSi

  • Developed in-house: Combines lateral support and long-distance comfort
  • Built in-house: Key components from the Opel plant in Kaiserslautern
  • AGR certified: Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. confirms exemplary ergonomics
  • Fully equipped: Ventilation, heating, massage function, adjustable side bolster

Strong support in corners and high comfort over long distances: New performance sport seat of the Opel Insignia GSi.

Excellent seats are just as much part of Opel as the iconic Blitz on the grille. The Rüsselsheim-based carmaker offers AGR certified (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.) ergonomic seats for a wide range of models starting with the sub-compact Opel Crossland X. The latest development in seating technology with outstanding lateral support and best long-distance comfort is now celebrating its debut in the new sporty flagship, the Opel Insignia GSi and the GSi Sports Tourer. The AGR-certified Opel performance sport seat comes with all advanced features already known from the top-of-the-range seats available for the Insignia. The integral seat in the GSi also comes with ventilation, heating, a message function and adjustable side bolsters. These features are complimented by the high backrest with integrated headrest in the sportiest member of the Insignia line-up. In addition, the belt route at shoulder height is exemplary – not a given for integral sports seats. Customers can also choose between two premium leather combinations, while a discreet GSi logo adorns the back rest.

The length, depth, cushion and back angle of the seats that looks like a king cobra ready to strike can all be adjusted electrically. The air cushions of the four-way lumbar support along with the variable side bolsters are also activated electrically. All of these settings can be saved via the memory button – only the seat depth adjustment needs to be done manually. The ventilation and the heating are integrated in the cushion and backrest. In addition, the driver can enjoy a back massage. Overall the sum of sporty side support and comfort features makes the new performance seat a unique offer – developed in the competency centre for healthy seating in Rüsselsheim.

First ultra-sporty looking performance seat entirely from a manufacturer

Normally, carmakers buy the extra-sporty integral seats from a specialised supplier. However, this is very different in the case of the Opel Insignia GSi. The Technical Development Centre can draw on a vast amount of competence when it comes to seat structures. The concept for the second generation of the Insignia always foresaw a modular system with the integral performance seat forming the pinnacle. This enabled all of the comfort features to be maintained in a thoroughbred sport seat. Furthermore, the Opel in-house development also delivers on stylish highlights: the hinted guides for shoulder belts in the back rest look exactly like the air intakes at the front of the Opel Insignia GSi and demonstrate the outstanding attention to detail.

The base structure of the performance seat also stems from Opel. The key steel elements are from the plant in Kaiserslautern. The unified development and production of the new bucket seat also results in significant weight savings. While the sport seat – without any of the comfort features available in the GSi – weighs 28 kilogrammes in the Opel Corsa OPC which has been on the market for some years, the new integral seat with all its functionalities only adds 26 kilogrammes to the Opel Insignia GSi.

The Opel Insignia GSi celebrated its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. And now everybody who wants to experience the car for themselves can do so with the opening of the order books for Opel’s dynamic flagship. Prices for the GSi start at €45,595 (all prices RRP including VAT in Germany) for the Grand Sport variant. The car promises maximum driving pleasure on all roads. Families eager to experience the sporty feeling together can look to the spacious GSi Sports Tourer variant for prices starting at €46,595. It offers an equally rewarding driving experience plus additional space and practicality.

“The Insignia GSi already impressed with its uncompromising styling at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Our customers can feel that certain something as soon as they get behind the sport steering wheel,” said Peter Küspert, Managing Director Sales and Marketing, Opel Automobile GmbH. “This is the time to change. Because as of now, all sport drivers can now order their Insignia GSi. They will receive a sports machine for connoisseurs – sharp, precise and efficient.”

The entry-level Opel Insignia GSi Grand Sport is already equipped with the 154 kW/210 hp 2.0 litre BiTurbo diesel that delivers a hearty 480 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm (Official fuel consumption GSi 2.0 BiTurbo in accordance with the New European Driving Cycle: urban 8.9 l/100 km, extra-urban 6.1 l/100 km, combined 7.3 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 192 g/km).

People who prefer a powerful turbocharged petrol unit for the Opel  Insignia GSi can choose the 191 kW/260 hp 2.0 litre engine (Official fuel consumption in accordance with the New European Driving Cycle: urban 11.2 l/100 km, extra-urban 7.1 l/100 km, combined 8.6 l/100 km, official specific combined CO2 emissions 197 g/km) for prices starting at €47,800. The 2.0 turbo delivers maximum torque of 400 Nm from 2,500 to 4,000 rpm. It propels the Insignia GSi Grand Sport from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and gives it a top speed of 250 km/h.

In addition, both powertrain versions come with an especially dynamic set-up of the FlexRide chassis, adaptive all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, especially grippy Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres along with a new eight-speed automatic transmission which also enables manual shifting via the paddles on the steering wheel.

It really gets stuck in …

The all-new GSi chassis is the base for maximum driving pleasure and effective power output: Shorter springs lower the GSi by 10 millimetres and special sports shock absorbers reduce body movements to a minimum. You can feel exactly where the Opel Insignia GSi received its fine-tuning in every corner and in every movement – on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, the toughest racetrack in the world.

The mechatronic FlexRide chassis adapts shock absorbers and steering in fractions of a second; the control unit also changes the calibration of the accelerator pedal and the shift points of the eight-speed automatic. The driver can choose between Standard, Tour and Sport modes. Subject to the chosen mode, steering and throttle-response is then even more direct. Exclusive to the GSi is the Competition mode, which is activated via the ESP button. A double-press allows skilful drivers more yaw and switches off traction control. Insignia GSi pilots who truly want to control everything themselves can also change gears via the steering wheel paddles.

Elsewhere, the Twinster all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring – unique in the segment – is the ideal match for the sports chassis. The conventional differential on the rear axle is replaced by two clutches, which can accelerate each rear wheel individually in fractions of a second. Depending on the driving situation, this results in the Insignia GSi following the line its driver wants to take. Furthermore, Brembo brakes ensure outstanding braking performance even at high speeds.

… and immediately gives a race-driver feeling

These ingredients create a highly active driving experience which is matched by the Insignia GSi’s sporty looks. Large chrome air intakes at the front, GSi bumpers and side sills along with the optional prominent rear spoiler for the Grand Sport clearly show: here comes a real sports machine. Furthermore, drivers can enjoy the standard AGR-certified ergonomic seats or alternatively choose the optional integral leather performance seat developed especially for the GSi. It comes with the customary comfort features such as ventilation, heating, massage function and adjustable side support along with a high back rest with integrated head rest. The standard aluminium sport pedals provide additional sporty flair. With these features the Opel Insignia GSi delivers unparalleled driving pleasure both as a Grand Sport and as a Sports Tourer.
