Introducing the Mr. Clean of the Corsa family – green, powerful and economical, the new Opel Corsa 1.4 LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) ecoFLEX develops 66 kW/90 hp and comes straight from the factory with a bi-fuel capability. Specifically aimed at cost-conscious customers, this latest member of the new Corsa family is an ideal choice in the small car segment because LPG drivers’ wallets benefit two-fold. On the one hand, fuel costs plummet by almost 50 percent compared to gasoline due to the low price of LPG, while on the other hand, the Corsa 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX boasts a particularly attractive entry-level price. The three-door model is now available from just 14,745 euros, and the five-door model from 15,495 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

Clean and economical: New Opel Corsa 1.4 LPG cuts CO2 emissions down to 113 g/km.
The Corsa LPG is not only extremely cost-efficient, but also kinder to the environment. That’s because LPG, a mixture of butane and propane gas which the four-cylinder engine burns under the Corsa’s shapely hood, is known for its super-clean combustion characteristics. Using this fuel, the new Corsa consumes just 6.9 liters per 100 km over the combined cycle and emits only 113 g/km CO2 – around 13 percent less CO2 than in gasoline operation. The nitrogen oxide emissions are even up to 80 percent lower.

“With the 1.3 CDTI, which consumes just 3.1 liters diesel, and our brand-new 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX, we have two real ‘eco-champions’ in the Corsa line-up. Once again, they both show how important energy efficiency and CO2 emissions reductions are for us in all model ranges,” says Peter Christian Küspert, Opel Group Vice President Sales and Aftersales. “But these models aren’t only attractive for especially cost-conscious drivers. They also offer many features that go far beyond what’s normally found in the small car class, such as ample space, superb comfort, state-of-the-art connectivity and driver assistance systems.”

Bi-Fuel driving: Long range with low fuel costs and emissions

The Opel Corsa 1.4 LPG offers 66 kW/90 hp in both LPG and gasoline operation and is available with a five-speed manual transmission. It needs just 6.9 liters per 100 km in alternative fuel mode, while CO2 emissions of 113 g/km are around 13 percent lower than in conventional gasoline operation. Fuel costs are reduced by almost 50 percent compared to gasoline. This huge saving is the result of tax benefits stipulated for LPG until 2018. And, looking further ahead, the prospects look promising because tax advantages for alternative fuels are expected to be extended on both the national and European levels.

Space saving and safe: The LPG tank’s installation in the spare-wheel housing of the trunk is both space-efficient and collision-protected.
Another benefit of the new-generation LPG Corsa is that, like all Opel LPG models, it comes ready for bi-fuel operation ex-works. The driver can switch between LPG and gasoline by pushing a button. A newly developed control module now enables an even more efficiently synchronized transition between the two operating modes. This means a driving range of up to 1,200 km is possible without having to stop to refuel. Range and consumption can be viewed separately for LPG and gasoline, as well as combined via an on-board computer. Today there are around 7,000 LPG filling stations in Germany and more than 35,000 across Europe.

Bi-Fuel driving: The new Corsa runs with either LPG or gasoline. In combination, this means a driving range of up to 1,200 km.

Space-saving and safe: Complete everyday use with LPG

The LPG tank’s installation in the spare-wheel housing of the trunk is both space-efficient and collision-protected. As a result, the Opel Corsa LPG still offers accommodation for five people or up to 1,120 liters of luggage space, just like its Corsa siblings. It also features the same ultra-modern driver assistance systems and equipment features – from standard City mode, optional steering wheel heating and automatic Park Assist all the way to Opel’s award-winning IntelliLink infotainment system complete with 7-inch color touchscreen.

Powerful, refined and economical: New-generation SIDI Turbo gasoline engine
On the gasoline front, the headline news is the introduction of two new direct injection engines: a 2.0 liter SIDI Turbo (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) with 184 kW/250 hp and 400 Nm maximum torque, and the all-new generation 1.6 SIDI turbo with 125 kW/170 hp and 260 Nm (up to 280 Nm with overboost) available from 1,650 rpm.

The all-new generation 1.6 SIDI Turbo with 125 kW/170 hp and 260 Nm (up to 280 Nm with overboost).

Distinguishing traits are superb power delivery, excellent running refinement and high fuel economy. In four and five-door models, the 1.6 SIDI turbo requires only 5.9 liters of fuel per 100 km and emits just 139 g/km CO2 (according to Regulation [EC] No 715/2007), while the Sports Tourer consumes 6.2 l/100 km with 146 g/km CO2. This is an improvement of almost 16 percent compared to models powered by the previous 1.6 turbo engine. The engine runs on regular as well as super gasoline fuel.

New Opel ECOTEC 1.6 SIDI Turbo gasoline engine with 125 kW/170 hp and 260 Nm (up to 280 Nm with overboost)
To provide excellent fuel economy, performance and refinement for exceptional driving comfort, the key development objectives of engineers for the new 1.6 SIDI engine were low overall levels of radiated noise and vibration, with no unusual sounds. Optimization of the induction and exhaust systems included decoupling the cam cover from the cylinder head via specific fasteners and a sealing system. In this way, engineers were able to substantially reduce noise levels resulting from the gasoline direct injection’s pulsed combustion. As a result of such ‘sound-engineering’ measures, Insignia drivers and passengers will appreciate quiet and smooth idling, with a pleasant sound quality even at high road speeds, engine speeds and loads. Balancer shafts integrated in tunnels along the cylinder block also contribute to these enhancements. The 1.6-liter turbo direct injection engine is the only gasoline unit in its displacement class equipped with two such balancer shafts.

Both the 1.6 and 2.0 SIDI turbo can be ordered with a six-speed manual gearbox and Start/Stop, or a new, low-friction six-speed automatic transmission. In addition to front-wheel-drive, the 2.0 liter SIDI Turbo is in some markets also available with All-Wheel-Drive (AWD).

The entry-level gasoline engine at market launch is a frugal and extremely clean (Euro 6) 1.4 Turbo with a six-speed manual gearbox and Start/Stop. It delivers 103 kW/140 hp and 200 Nm of torque (220 Nm with overboost), but needs only 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 km and emits 123 g/km CO2 (Sports Tourer 5.6 l/100 km and 131 g/km CO2 according to Regulation [EC] No 715/2007) – that means Best-in-Class Economy.
New Opel ECOTEC (Euro 6) 1.4 Turbo gasoline engine with 103 kW/140 hp and 200 Nm of torque (220 Nm with overboost)

An alternative, extremely economical powertrain option is the 103 kW/140 hp Opel Insignia 1.4 LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), with maximum torque of 200 Nm. Like the gasoline version, it meets stringent future Euro 6 emissions standards. With fuel consumption of 7.6 l/100 km (Sports Tourer: 7.9 l/100 km) over the combined cycle and low CO2 emissions of 124 g/km (Sports Tourer: 129 g/km CO2), the Insignia LPG is unrivalled in efficiency class A. In addition to low emissions and fuel costs, a further benefit is its long driving range: in bi-fuel LPG/gasoline operation, up to 1,700 km can be covered without having to stop for refueling.

Streamlined: Opel Insignia leads in aerodynamic values
Exemplary fuel consumption is also a result of the new Opel Insignia’s aerodynamically optimized body design, incorporating many measures that lower its drag coefficient. These include new extended underbody covers, wider front spoiler lips, tail lamp housings designed to enhance airflow separation, and an integrated rear deck lid spoiler.

With exceptionally low Cd values of just below 0.25 for the Opel Insignia hatchback and 0.28 for the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer, both models are the most streamlined series production cars in their body variants worldwide.

LED Tail lamp housings and integrated rear deck lid spoiler designed to enhance airflow separation

Opel Insignia 2.0 CDTI models with Start/Stop and 88 kW/120 hp or 103 kW/140 hp also feature an additional, ultra-modern aerodynamic element: an active front air shutter. Air flowing through the front grille to cool the engine usually accounts for up to eight percent of total vehicle air drag. To reduce this effect, a shutter in the lower front grille automatically closes to prevent air entering and causing turbulence. For cold starts, an additional advantage is a faster engine warm up, which also provides fuel consumption and CO2 emissions benefits. Whenever the engine needs air for cooling, the shutter opens automatically. Taking all improvements into account, Opel engineers have succeeded in giving the new Insignia benchmark levels of aerodynamic performance. With exceptionally low Cd values of just below 0.25 for the Insignia hatchback and 0.28 for the Sports Tourer, both models are the most streamlined series production cars in their body variants worldwide.

Driver’s choice: Chassis tuning Comfortable or Sporty
Despite its tight focus on fuel efficiency, the new Insignia makes no compromises in terms of comfort. Furthermore, Opel’s flagship also makes a new statement in terms of the chassis. While the Insignia has already received many accolades for driving comfort, handling and roadholding, the new edition raises its game even higher. Opel engineers have made a host of chassis improvements, including dampers, roll-bars and steering, which result in improved noise and vibration behavior and even higher levels of comfort. The Insignia now features new dampers and so called rebound springs, while completely new suspension control arms and carrier housings were built into the axle architecture to improve driving comfort. In addition, the diameters of the front and rear anti-roll bars have also been altered.

Opel’s outstanding FlexRide premium chassis system, with its real-time adaptive driving style recognition, is of course also used in the new Opel Insignia. This innovative chassis networks all driving dynamics systems and features electronic damper adjustment, as well as speed-dependent power steering. The driver can choose between three driving modes: Standard for driving comfort, Tour for an even softer, more comfortable drive, and Sport for a more direct, sporty driving experience.

The LPG tank which has a usable filling volume of around 60 liters is perfectly integrated under the car floor so that the full load capacity is maintained and the high flexibility of the optional Zafira Tourer “Lounge seating” system is available. With a single tank of fuel, the Zafira Tourer achieves a maximum range of around 650 kilometers; if the gasoline tank is used in addition a range of up to 1,500 kilometers can even be reached.
The driver can easily alternate between the LPG and gasoline propulsion mode: either automatically when the LPG tank is empty or with a switch in the instrument panel. An LED display is illuminated when the car operates with LPG; as soon as the vehicle is in the gasoline mode the light is off. The fuel tank gauge is particularly user friendly: both LPG and gasoline reserves are displayed in the same gauge.

LPG system Ex Works: Saves space, Safe and comes with Warranty
The LPG system installation ex works has major advantages compared to other retrofit solutions. For example, the Opel safety checklist includes specific crash tests for the gas tank and other components which are housed in collision proof areas and are perfectly integrated into the safety structure of the vehicle.
Like in the Zafira CNG version, the gas tanks are perfectly integrated under the floor of the car, ensuring that the load compartment is always maintained spacious and not restricted. Customers can be sure that their LPG vehicle is equipped with state-of-the art technology ex works which lives up to the typical Opel values of durability, manufacturer warranty and maximum safety.

LPG: Environmentally Friendly, Cost Effective and Universally Available
LPG propulsion is gaining in popularity in Germany and Europe. This is hardly surprising as the LPG price at the pumps is around half of the gasoline price. Early 2012, more than 450,000 vehicles of this type were registered in Germany. This is hardly surprising as the price of LPG is almost half of high octane gasoline. Until the year 2018, the German authorities are also granting a fixed tax break for LPG fuel. However, not only does the car owner see the financial rewards but there are also environmental benefits as LPG vehicles emit up to 15 percent less carbon-dioxide than cars with a conventional powertrain. In Germany, this fuel is available at around 6,500 or 45 percent of all gas stations. Europe wide there are more 35,000 in total.

The entry price for the Astra 5 door 1.4 Turbo LPG ecoFLEX is 22.670 Euro, for the Astra Sports Tourer LPG 23.770 and for the Meriva LPG version prices start at 22.240 Euro (all recommended retail prices in Germany, including VAT).
Their debut comes after the Corsa LPG 1.2 ecoFLEX 3 and 5 door models had their launch in June 2011, marking the start of the new generation of Opel LPG vehicles. The Corsa 1.2 LPG three door version delivers 61kW/83 hp in LPG mode yet only emits 110 g/km CO2.
In the autumn of 2012, Opel’s ecoFLEX spectrum will be further expanded when the 1.4 Turbo LPG ecoFLEX versions of the Zafira Tourer and the Insignia are released.

LPG is part of Opel’s portfolio of alternative propulsion systems that also includes CNG models (Compressed Natural Gas: Zafira 1.6 Turbo, Zafira Tourer 1.6 CNG Turbo and Combo 1.4 CNG Turbo) as well as electric vehicles such as the revolutionary Opel Ampera with range extender. The Ampera is the first electric vehicle that can go anywhere anytime and was just nominated as a finalist for the “Car of the Year 2012” award.
LPG owners can make fuel cost savings of up to 40%. In certain countries, such as Germany, there are significant tax incentives for LPG vehicle owners. LPG customers can expect up to 15% lower CO2 emissions in LPG mode than their gasoline counterparts. In addition, the new Euro 5 standard models, Opel offers a complete LPG solution ex works, ensuring that the LPG ecoFLEX models are delivered in high Opel quality and with the full manufacturer warranty. Since 2009, Opel has been producing LPG vehicles. Around 61,000 vehicles have been sold across Europe with around 80% in Italy alone.
Opel Corsa 1.2 LPG gas fueling
All Opel LPG models offer the full functionality of a gasoline engine combined with the specific advantages of LPG. That is because an LPG tank is installed in addition to a gasoline tank. This means LPG vehicles have considerably lower fuel bills and increased operating range: without range anxiety. For example, the total operating range of the Astra 5-door 1.4 Turbo LPG ecoFLEX featuring a 56 liter gasoline tank and a 49 liter LPG tank is more than 1,400 kilometers.

Environmentally friendly innovations
For its latest generation of LPG engines, Opel has carried out a significant optimization of the engine and LPG unit software so that both elements communicate better with one another. The engine can alternate easily between the LPG and the gasoline modes and adjust according to which type of fuel is being used. This means that the engine runs more efficiently and CO2 emissions are kept to a minimum.

Easy to use LPG switch
The Corsa, Astra and Meriva LPG models all feature a new, easy to reach Gasoline/LPG switch centrally located in the instrument panel, making the switch over between the LPG and gasoline mode easier than ever. Operation modes (LPG to gasoline and vice versa) are switched automatically or can be chosen manually. A light is illuminated inside the switch when the vehicle is in LPG mode. As soon as the car switches into gasoline usage the light is switched off. This innovation will also be offered in the Zafira Tourer and Insignia LPG variants for 2012.

LPG tank storage solution
Opel’s customized LPG system has a practical storage solution for the LPG gas. It has been optimally integrated in the spare-wheel housing. This ensures that the passenger and load compartments are spacious and are not restricted. Tire repair kits are offered as standard on board all LPG vehicles.

New Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CNG Turbo

  • 1.6 liter CNG Turbo ecoFLEX with 110 kW/150 hp, only 129g/km CO2
  • 530 kilometers CNG range with full 7 seat configuration
  • Innovative light weight gas tank system now enables 25 kg CNG capacity

Shortly after the Zafira Tourer’s world premiere at the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show, Opel is broadening the spectrum of its new compact monocab with highly efficient and environmentally friendly alternative propulsion. In January 2012, the new natural gas ecoFLEX version with a best-in-class CNG range of up to 530 km – well beyond the 500 km mark - will be added to the powertrain portfolio of Opel’s flexibility master. Like the previous model, the Zafira Tourer features Opel’s MonovalentPlus system and has a 14 liter gasoline reserve, giving it an extra 150 km range.

Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Turbo ecoFLEX has 110 kW/150 hp, 210 Nm of torque and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h. The vehicle only uses 4.7 kilograms (7.2 m3) of natural gas per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle which is at least 6% better than the predecessor Zafira CNG model. CO2 emissions were reduced to 129 g/km (predecessor: 139 g/km), thereby fulfilling the Euro 5 norm. However, the 1.6 liter engine can also run on biogas or a mixture of natural gas and biogas. In the case of 100% biogas propulsion, the carbon foot print is almost zero.

The extended CNG range of the seven-seat vehicle represents an improvement of around 25% on its predecessor. These enhancements have been mainly achieved with a new light weight gas tank system providing an increased CNG capacity of now 25 kg (predecessor: 21 kg) and an optimization of the drivetrain.

Prices for the Zafira Tourer CNG version, which can already be ordered, start at 27,950 Euro (recommended retail price in Germany, including VAT). CNG vehicles like the new Zafira Tourer offer significantly lower running costs than their gasoline counterparts. For example, in Germany CNG is 50% cheaper than gasoline.

Cutting edge gas storage solution

Opel engineers increased the volume of the gas tanks to 25 kilograms from previously 21 kilograms. This has helped to boost the operative range in the CNG mode by around 25% to 530 km. Rather than using conventional steel gas cylinders, the engineers opted for state-of-the art composite material including carbon fiber. The use of this lightweight material resulted in a weight saving of 85 kilograms.

Another important innovation that has further increased the range is the use of electronic pressure regulators rather than mechanical ones, as it was the case in the Zafira CNG predecessor model. The electronic regulators ensure that when the gas cylinders are almost empty, even small remaining reserves can be efficiently exploited. In the seven seat configuration, the Zafira Tourer CNG has a clear advantage over its competitors in terms of operating range.

MonovalentPlus concept for maximum efficiency and everyday suitability

Opel was the first manufacturer to optimize engines for the use of natural gas by employing the clever MonovalentPlus system. Under the tried and tested concept the engine has been optimized to use CNG but the vehicle also holds a 14 liter auxiliary gasoline tank. When the CNG tanks are empty, the vehicle automatically starts utilizing the gasoline reserves.
On the engine side, the optimization includes several measures: as natural gas has an anti-knock resistance of up to 130 octane, compression can be increased, yielding greater efficiency. The increase in the compression ratio is also supported by a piston specially designed for use with natural gas. The cylinder selective sequential injection, with an injection block and four injectors for natural gas and gasoline, also permits precision control of the injection timing and quantity. This reduces harmful emissions, leading in turn to especially clean exhaust gases.

Opel Zafira: The flagship CNG vehicle

Since launching its first CNG vehicle in 2001, Opel has sold more than 70,000 CNG powered vehicles throughout Europe, including the Zafira, the Astra Caravan and the Combo. More than two-thirds of total CNG sales are for the Zafira. This makes the Zafira the undisputed bestseller and flagship of Opel’s CNG offering. Opel has consistently been in the top three manufacturers in terms of total European sales in the CNG segment.

While the Opel Zafira 1.6 Turbo CNG version is still available, the new Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CNG Turbo ecoFLEX takes the Opel CNG offer up-market. The new Opel Zafira Tourer offers a perfect blend of functionality and comfort. It brings the Insignia values to the monocab segment – premium qualities, innovative technologies, sculptural and dynamic design. With an extensively redesigned Flex7 seating system, the new Zafira Tourer now sets novel standards in interior flexibility and atmosphere.
