All-aluminum: Opel 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo with central direct fuel injection will be available in the new Opel Astra in two outputs, 92 kW/125 hp and 110 kW/150 hp.
The full name of the new Opel engine is 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo and it will celebrate its world premiere in the new Opel Astra at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (IAA) in September. The four-cylinder turbocharged unit with central direct fuel injection will be available in two outputs, 92 kW/125 hp and 110 kW/150 hp. This combination links the new all-aluminum engine to the recently introduced 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo known from Opel ADAM and Corsa. In fact, the new 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine is the big brother of the one-liter, three-cylinder unit that has been praised by the trade press since its introduction in the Opel ADAM ROCKS and the new Corsa generation. Both engines are members of the so-called small gasoline engine family – a group of high-tech engines with three or four cylinders and a displacement below 1.6 liters. They are key players in the biggest engine offensive in Opel’s history which will see 17 new engines brought to market from 2014 to 2018.

A lot of attention was paid to dynamic responsiveness and high performance while curbing fuel consumption during the development phase of the 1.4-liter turbo. The engine delivers maximum torque of up to 245 Nm very early. The maximum power is available between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm – an outstanding torque plateau. Perfect conditions for driving pleasure in combination with efficiency. According to preliminary data, the powerful turbo with Start/Stop will consume a mere 4.9 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle (114 g/km CO2). The 1.4-liter turbo will therefore be able to outperform even two-liter gasoline engines in all performance characteristics and replace them. The engineers once again paid close attention to low noise levels and vibration behavior during the development of the 1.4 liter turbo – just like they did for the one-liter, three-cylinder unit. The engine block was constructed with resonance reduction in mind, the oil pan split into two, the integration of the cylinder head into the exhaust manifold is noise protected, a sound absorbing cam cover has been designed, the high-pressure injection valves decoupled and the timing chain trimmed for quiet concentricity.

The lightness of being: The new degree of efficiency
Based on its construction, the new 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo adds less weight to the car. The aluminum engine block alone weighs ten kilograms less than the cast-iron block of the current 1.4 liter turbo, making it the perfect match for the new, highly efficient Opel Astra. Apropos efficiency, this is where the 1.4 turbo can really show its technical advantages: to make the engine as light as possible, the crankshaft is hollow cast, the oil pump drive is especially low friction and the oil pump works in two pressure levels accordingly. The entire engine is designed for low friction oils with a viscosity grade of 5W-30. All of these measures ensure fuel efficiency of the highest standard.
While the three-cylinder Opel units are typical representatives of engine downsizing (smaller, lighter, more efficient), the Opel engineers speak of “rightsizing“, i.e. the perfect balance between low load and high load efficiency, when talking about the new 1.4 liter four-cylinder engine.
Milestone engine from Szentgotthárd
The 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo is manufactured in the Opel Flex Plant in Szentgotthárd. And it is already responsible for setting a new milestone for the Hungarian plant. The eight millionth engine from Szentgotthárd left the production line today and it was, of course, an all-aluminum, four-cylinder unit that will make its debut in the new Opel Astra from September.

Saving where it counts: The new vehicle architecture
Lighter, more frugal and agile and at the same time even more comfortable – the new Opel Astra meets all of these demands thanks to its successful fitness program. The visionary Monza Concept, unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, was the role model for the eleventh generation Opel compact class car. According to Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, every element and every design feature of the Opel Monza Concept reflects efficiency. The new Opel Astra follows this vision rigorously. Depending on the model and trim level it will be up to 200 kilograms – at the very least 120 kilograms – lighter than its predecessor. The completely new vehicle architecture plays a major role in the weight reduction. Every component was checked for compact design and lightweight materials. The bodyshell weight alone was reduced by 20 percent from 357 to 280 kilograms. Additional, chassis-related measures resulted in another 50 kilograms of weight reduction; these include high-strength and ultra-high-strength low-weight steels, compact subframes as well as weight reductions to the front and rear axle.

Only the best: The latest powertrain portfolio
The engine in the new Opel Astra supports this claim. Under the hood of every new Astra a member of the completely new engine portfolio can be found. Outputs range from 70 kW/95 hp to 147 kW/200 hp. The diesel and gasoline engines with a displacement of up to 1.6 liters all have three things in common: they combine highest efficiency with excellent responsiveness and running smoothness.
The 1.6 CDTI with a wide range of outputs starting at 70 kW/95 hp covers the diesel offer whereas the 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo (77 kW/105 hp) is the base level gasoline engines. The highlight in the new Opel Astra engine portfolio is the all-new 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo, a four-cylinder unit from the same family as the smaller but nonetheless powerful one-liter, three-cylinder engine. The all-aluminum engine will make its debut with 107 kW/145 hp. It impresses with dynamic responsiveness and high performance while curbing fuel consumption. The engine delivers maximum torque of up to 250 Nm very early. Maximum power is available between 1,800 and 4,000 rpm – perfect conditions for driving pleasure in combination with efficiency. Based on its construction, the new 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo also adds less weight to the car. The design of the new Opel Astra also depicts efficiency and once again the Opel Monza Concept was the role model. The evolution of the Opel design philosophy ‘Sculptural Artistry meets German Precision’ ensures that the new Astra catches the eye with a lighter, more athletic appearance instead of a muscular look. The Opel Blitz in the center of the chrome bar on the grill and the characteristic ‘blade’ raising towards the rear make the new Astra immediately recognizable as a member of the Opel Family. The front headlamps melt into the radiator grille to form a graphic unity. The most significant design cue is the divided C-pillar, creating the impression of a floating roof. The interplay of light and shadow is emphasized by the horizontal crossbar above the brand logo linking the rear lights. The new Opel Astra does not just look smaller – it is smaller. With a total length of 4.37 meters it is almost five centimeters shorter than its predecessor. With a height of 1.46 meters it is also 2.6 centimeters smaller. The dimensions obviously have an impact on aerodynamics and efficiency with the new Astra boasting a drag coefficient below 0.30.

Smaller on the outside but bigger on the inside – Opel engineers are responsible for successfully squaring this circle. The wheelbase may have been reduced by two centimeters but the amount of space inside increased. In combination with newly designed seats, the passengers in the rear can enjoy an additional 35 millimeters legroom. Furthermore, the distance between the front and rear seats was increased – this improves travel comfort and sense of space. The next generation Astra is the first new Opel model that will be available with the personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar from its launch. Opel OnStar offers customers a broad range of safety and comfort services. If an airbag deploys, Opel OnStar will be alerted automatically. An advisor will then contact the vehicle to determine whether help is required. If there is no response, emergency responders are immediately sent to the exact location of the vehicle. This is only one example of the advantages of the new personal connectivity and service assistant. Drivers and passengers can reach OnStar 24/7 and 365 days a year. Consisting of 16 LED segments – eight on each side of the vehicle – the new LED Matrix system automatically and constantly adapts the length and distribution of the light beam to every traffic situation. In the process, it works with the Opel Eye front camera. As soon as the vehicle exits urban areas, the high-beam lighting is automatically switched on – and it always remains on. At driving speeds of 80 km/h, drivers detect objects at the side of the road around 30 to 40 meters sooner than with conventional halogen or xenon low beam lighting. This gives them around 1.5 seconds more time to react. Dazzling other road users is also not a problem. When the camera detects light sources from oncoming or preceding traffic, individual LEDs in the relevant zone are deactivated, simply “cutting out” the area around the vehicles. The rest of the road and its surroundings remain brightly illuminated. With this degree of precision and adaptation, LED Matrix light elevates lighting technology to the next level.

Not only does the system illuminate the surroundings brighter than conventional lighting systems, it also has a considerably longer running life than headlamps with Halogen or Xenon lamps. Another advantage is that mechanical movements are no longer necessary in the headlamp – the individual LED segments turn on or off according to the situation, which also contributes to durability.

Exciting combination: The new Opel Corsavan combines the comfort, safety features and performance of a passenger car with the transport capacity of a small van.
Following the successful launch of the new Opel Corsa at the Paris Motor Show in October of last year, the new Corsavan will make its debut at the Brussels Motor Show (January 16 to 25, 2015). The small but capable van will be on show at the Opel stand in Hall 9 of the Brussels Expo and is part of Opel’s new light commercial vehicle strategy. Based on the new three-door Corsa, the nippy city delivery van, which combines the comfort, safety features and performance of a passenger car with the transport capacity of a small van can be ordered now and will be at dealerships in the first quarter of this year.
The new Corsavan is even more practical than its predecessor, offering 21 kilograms more maximum payload. Furthermore, it also comes with numerous safety features such as the award-winning Side Blind Spot Alert or the second-generation Opel Eye front camera, with Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist, Following Distance Indication and Forward Collision Warning. To top things off, the optional IntelliLink Infotainment System guarantees excellent connectivity. Compatible with Android and Apple devices it makes the Corsavan the best-connected city delivery van on the market.

The engine lineup consists of 1.4 liter gasoline engines and 1.3 liter diesel aggregates with outputs ranging from 70 to 95 hp. The 1.3 CDTI ecoFlex engine with 95 hp is the pick of the diesel aggregates and has undergone comprehensive redevelopment for use in the new Corsavan. It delivers 190 Nm torque, comes with Start/Stop as standard and is Euro-6 compliant. Comprehensive Safety & Comfort Package
When it comes to safety, the Corsavan benefits greatly from its close relationship with its passenger car sibling and comes with a generous package of safety features. The highlight is Opel’s award-winning Side Blind Spot Alert, which uses ultrasonic sensors to warn the driver of an imminent collision when changing lanes, overtaking or turning a corner. The sensors have a range of three meters to the left and right of the vehicle, and detect objects or other vehicles in the driver’s blind spots. Whenever another vehicle comes within range of the sensors, a warning LED illuminates in the relevant exterior door mirror. Side Blind Spot Alert works in speeds ranging from 10 km/h to 140 km/h.
The second-generation Opel Eye front camera, with Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist, Following Distance Indication and Forward Collision Warning, also further increases driving safety. Traffic Sign Recognition reads speed limit- and no-passing signs and displays them on the instrument panel. Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they unintentionally stray out of their lane. High Beam Assist offers a considerable safety advantage when driving in the dark automatically activating the high beam light for better road illumination and improved visibility. Following Distance Indication, which is activated automatically at speeds from 40 km/h, not only helps to prevent collisions, but also helps to avoid possible fines for not maintaining sufficient safety distance to the vehicle in front. If the vehicle gets into a critical situation where a collision with the preceding vehicle is imminent, Forward Collision Warning alerts the driver with a loud alarm as well as a visual warning on the instrument cluster.
At the touch of a button, the City mode of the steering system, fitted as standard except when the Opel Eye front camera is chosen, increases power assistance at lower speeds, which is particularly useful when maneuvering in congested urban areas. Hill Start Assist also comes as standard. It maintains the brake function for about two seconds. This prevents the Corsavan from rolling back when starting on a slope. On cold days, owners benefit from the heated ThermaTec windscreen that ensures perfect visibility and the heated steering wheel.

Furthermore, the immediate introduction of the newly developed Easytronic 3.0 will complete the Opel ADAM transmission portfolio. The automated gearbox combines the advantages of a comfortable automatic transmission with the increased efficiency of a manual gearbox. The third generation of Easytronic promises shortened response times, resulting in gear changes that are unrivalled by any other automated transmission in terms of smoothness and speed.
Reduces fuel consumption: The Easytronic 3.0 automated gearbox
Apart from increasing driving comfort, improving efficiency was key during the development of Easytronic. In combination with the 64 KW/87 hp 1.4-liter naturally aspirated engine, Easytronic 3.0 cuts fuel consumption by up to 0.4 liters per 100 kilometers for the combined cycle compared to a five-speed manual transmission. This is equivalent to a reduction of CO2 emissions by 10 grams per kilometer. In this arrangement, Opel ADAM 1.4 ecoFLEX with Start/Stop consumes 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers and emits 109 grams of CO2 per kilometer, meaning that it makes the leap from efficiency class C to B. However, the key factor is affordability. Therefore, Easytronic is available for a very reasonable euro 600 (RRP including VAT in Germany).

The Rüsselheim-based automobile manufacturer has decided to sell seven vehicles of this exclusive series at auction with all proceeds going to charity. The auction on Germany’s largest charity auction portal, United Charity, is now open and bids for the camouflage look ADAMs can be placed via the following link www.unitedcharity.de/OpelAdam until November 21, 2014. The proceeds will go to the “Bryan Adams Foundation”. The charity looks after people in need around the world.

Pocket powerhouse: New 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo now available for Opel ADAM
Opel is in the middle of the largest engine offensive in its history: between 2014 and 2018, 17 new engines will be introduced. A top highlight is the ultra-modern, 1.0‑liter three-cylinder gasoline unit complete with turbocharging and the very finest manners – giving a clean, smooth and quiet operation. This direct-injection engine makes its debut in the Opel ADAM and ADAM ROCKS with a newly developed, six-speed manual transmission and sets new standards for three-cylinder engine refinement. It is not only economical and climate-friendly, but also silky smooth to drive, with noise and vibration characteristics superior to many four-cylinder engines.

This pocket powerhouse comes in two configurations, giving 66 kW/90 hp or 85 kW/115 hp. Both deliver strong, low-end torque of 170 Nm from just 1,800 rpm across a wide engine speed plateau. As a result, it enables better acceleration at low rpm than larger engines with similar horsepower, together with much lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Compared to Opel’s current 1.4 liter naturally-aspirated unit (74 kW/100 hp), the ADAM’s new 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo offers substantially improved driving performance. Particularly during acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h, an exceptionally important speed range for overtaking, the turbo delivers strong power at low rpm. With 90 hp the 1.0 turbo covers this sprint in 13.2 seconds, while the 115 hp version requires just 10.9 seconds.
Despite its fiery performance, the 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo consumes just 4.2 (90 hp) and 4.9 liters (115 hp) of fuel per 100 km in the combined cycle. Braking-energy recuperation and low-rolling-resistance tires (15 and 16-inch on the Opel ADAM) further contribute to saving fuel. This new three-cylinder unit already complies with the future Euro 6 emission standards.
Driving performance in the new Opel ADAM ROCKS with the 1.0 turbo unit is on a par with the regular ADAM: maximum speed is 180 (90 hp) and 196 (115 hp) km/h, while acceleration from zero to 100 km/h takes just 11.9 and 9.9 seconds respectively.

State-of-the-art technologies include high-pressure direct fuel injection, an ultra-compact turbocharging system, continuously variable valve timing and a lightweight aluminum construction with a cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold. Numerous ‘sound engineering’ measures which contribute to the engine’s benchmark refinement include an acoustically-developed cylinder block; a sump-mounted balancer shaft – universally unique for a three-cylinder engine; structural isolation of the fuel injection system and crankshaft; drive chains with inverted teeth and engine covers designed for acoustic attenuation.

Prices for the new 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo start at 16,150 euros for the 90 hp version in ADAM JAM. And with 115 hp, the ADAM costs a mere 300 euros more. The differential is exactly the same for the new adventure-loving ADAM ROCKS, which costs just 18,490 euros (90 hp) or 18,790 euros (115 hp) (all prices RRP incl. VAT in Germany). It offers higher ground clearance and loads of off-road appeal, in addition to a leather steering wheel, air conditioning, 17-inch alloy wheels, CD-radio with seven speakers, USB port and a hands-free kit, as well as an electric Swing Top canvas roof – all fitted as standard.

The trendy Opel ADAM now also comes as an LPG variant. With this, the small urban car that can be custom-designed also increases its powertrain options. The new Opel ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX is optimized for operation with LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), but can also run on gasoline – the driver can have the remaining driving range readout shown on the digital instrument display at any time.
In LPG operation, the 64 kW/87 hp ADAM consumes just 6.9 liters per 100 km (112 g/km CO2 emissions). Compared to a similarly powerful gasoline engine, fuel costs are around 50 percent lower !

In addition, the ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX is the first Opel ex works LPG model to roll off the assembly line in Eisenach. Prices start at 16,150 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).
With the ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX, Opel expands its LPG fleet to ten models: the Corsa (three and five-door), Astra (five-door and Sports Tourer), Meriva and Zafira Tourer as well as the new Insignia (four and five-door sedans, Sports Tourer) are already available as Bi-fuel LPG versions.
Extended range with Bi-fuel propulsion concept
The 1.4-liter ecoFlex engine was optimized for operation with liquefied gas. For the LPG variant, engineers reinforced the valves and valve seats and correspondingly adapted engine management. All LPG-specific components including the LPG gas tank designed exclusively for the ADAM were integrated particularly deeply in the vehicle. The goal was to achieve maximum LPG range without compromising on the variety of variants. Thanks to the space-saving installation of the LPG tank under the vehicle floor in the rear, full luggage compartment capacity is also preserved. The additional LPG tank holds up to 35 liters. With that alone, the Opel ADAM covers around 500 km in the combined cycle. In bi-fuel mode with activated gasoline tank, up to 1,200 km are possible.

The innovative driving range indicator is directly in the driver’s line of vision on the instrument panel and shows gasoline, LPG and total driving range. So the driver always knows what distance can be covered with which fuel. Moving between LPG and gasoline operation is seamless and takes place either automatically or by pressing a switch on the instrument panel. A control lamp then shows LPG operation; as soon as gasoline mode takes over, the lamp goes off. The filler neck for the liquefied gas is directly next to the gasoline filler neck and Opel includes the adapter to enable filling up across Europe.

For the first time, an LPG model is completely produced in the Opel plant in Eisenach. The gas system equipment ex-factory has important advantages over retrofit options. The topic of safety is a particularly high priority in plants developments. The Opel checklist, for example, includes special crash tests for the gas tank and other components located in the collision-protected areas that are also optimally integrated in the vehicle’s safety structure. The tank features a special protective cover that encloses the container on the ADAM’s underfloor. So customers get their LPG vehicle with modern technology and typical high Opel quality ex works – including reliability, manufacturer’s warranty and maximum safety.

More and more fuel stations offer LPG Europe-wide. Especially Turkey, Poland, Belgium, Ireland, Italy and the Netherland are very well equipped
Many customers in Germany and Europe value LPG propulsion as an attractive alternative – which is no wonder with a fuel price of around half of that of super unleaded. The government grants a tax bonus up to 2018 for LPG. But it’s not only customers’ wallets that benefit, so does the environment. LPG models emit up to 15 percent less carbon dioxide and up to 80 percent less nitrogen oxide than cars with comparable conventional propulsion. In Germany, the fuel is available at over 6,500 filling stations, which means at almost every second one. In Europe, around 12 million LPG vehicles fill up at over 35,000 filling stations equipped with LPG.
