Opel Insignia flagship takes strong second place overall
Opel claims two of six possible class victories for cars between two and three years old
Results from 8.8 million major inspections
Opel Insignia
Opel ADAM and the flagship Insignia have fewer errors than other cars in their classes. As last year, in the new TÜV Report the Opel ADAM continues to dominate the segment for mini cars aged two to three years, with an average significant error rating of only 3.7 per cent. TÜV has even fewer concerns with Opel’s flagship. Opel Insignia is not only at the top of its class, it also takes the silver medal in the overall classification. With a rating of 2.2 percent, Opel Insignia is only just behind the Mercedes GLC (1.7 percent).
Opel ADAM
“With the Opel Insignia, we are pleased to see that a midsize model from a volume manufacturer has made it to the podium”, said Joachim Bühler, Managing Director of the TÜV Association.
Opel Insignia ST
“The new TÜV Report is confirmation of our high level of quality, from flagship to small cars”, said Andreas Marx, the head of Opel in Germany. “Of course, we always aim to increase customer satisfaction in all areas. Our decades-old advertising claim – Opel the reliable – applies to our cars more than ever.”
Opel Insignia GSi
When it comes to the technical condition of vehicles in Germany, the TÜV Report has been a reliable source since 1972. The strengths and weaknesses of individual cars are listed in classes according to their age. Around 8.8 million major inspections were analysed for the TÜV Report 2021. Two hundred and twenty-eight different models were inspected between July 2019 and June 2020.

And that is why we are offering the special edition ‘120 years’ trim level for so many of our models to mark the start of our anniversary,” said Xavier Duchemin, Managing Director Sales, Aftersales & Marketing.
The special edition trim sits directly above the “Edition” trim and, depending on the model, includes assistance systems such as Park Assist or Cruise Control as standard. Features such as heated seats, heated steering wheel and velour floor mats increase the level of comfort. The “120 years” models become true eye catchers with stylish alloy wheels, chrome elements, door sills with Opel lettering and of course the “120 years” badge. And all this is available at attractive prices. For example, the special edition Corsa is already available from €15,440, prices for the anniversary Astra start at €21,725 and for the Grandland X at €29,200 (all prices RRP including VAT in Germany).
Opel Astra “120 years” edition

In addition, Astra 5-door and Sports Tourer drivers and occupants can rely on outstanding connectivity and entertainment thanks to the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible R 4.0 IntelliLink infotainment system with seven-inch colour display. Opel Crossland X “120 years” edition
The “120 years” Opel Crossland X comes with the same inner values as the Astra. Furthermore, the SUV, which was successfully launched last year, features a heated ThermaTec windscreen for a clear view on frosty days. The LED ambient lighting in the centre console and the doors increases the feel-good atmosphere in the dark. On the outside, the “120 year” Crossland X shines with high-gloss black B pillars, a chrome roofline, front and rear silver underride guard look and anthracite-coloured alloys in 4-twin-spoke design. Prices for the “120 years” Crossland X start at €21,650.
Opel benefitted from the timely and consistent
preparation of the transition to the new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized
Light Vehicles Test Procedure) test cycle in September: The brand with
the Blitz achieved a passenger car market share of 10.2 percent (+ 2.6
percentage points) in Germany in September. This is the highest market
share in an individual month since December 2010 and the highest
September value since 2006.
New vehicles registered as of September 1, 2018, need to be certified
according to the WLTP driving cycle. The procedure delivers fuel
consumption data much closer to reality than this was the case for its
predecessor, the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle). Unlike some
competitors, Opel implemented these regulations at an early stage and
can offer the entire passenger car portfolio without restrictions or
delays.
Furthermore, Opel is already equipped for the new Euro 6d-Temp
emissions standard: Currently, the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker offers 127
passenger models that already meet the strict limits of the new
standard. It comes into force for all new registrations on September 1,
2019, at the latest.
“We have been preparing for these changes for years and certified our
portfolio according to WLTP and Euro 6d-TEMP in good time. We can be
proud of that. And now we are benefitting from it. With a view to the
discussions on diesel driving bans in Germany, we can clearly say:
Whoever buys an Opel now, does not need to fear driving bans,” said
Jürgen Keller, Executive Director Sales, Marketing & Aftersales Opel
Germany.
Modern Euro 6d TEMP vehicles, regardless of whether they have a
petrol or a diesel engine, are not affected by the current discussions
on inner-city driving bans.
Opel also benefitted from the extensive availability of
WLTP-certified vehicles in other European countries. The brand with the
Blitz achieved a market share of almost six percent in Spain while in
France the company delivered its best passenger car market share since
May 2015 with 4.3 percent. And Opel’s British sister brand Vauxhall also
posted strong sales results in September. The combined passenger car
and light commercial vehicles market share reached an 18-month high of
8.6 percent (compared to 7.3 percent in September 2017).
After reunification: Opel one of the first manufacturers in the new federal states
Large anniversary celebration: Open day on September 30 from 10:00 CET
Behind the scenes: How Opel ADAM and Opel Corsa are built
September 23, 1992 was a special day in Opel’s history because on
this day the company opened its plant in Eisenach. With former German
Chancellor Helmut Kohl in and the employees in attendance, the first
ever Opel Astra “made in Eisenach” drove off the production line. Today,
the plant located in the direct vicinity of the famous Wartburg is one
of the most modern in the world in terms of environmental
sustainability, manufacturing technology and production systems. And it
is also an integral part of the city and the region. Around 1,800
employees produce the Opel Corsa, the Opel ADAM along with its ADAM
ROCKS and ADAM S sibling here. The carmaker will celebrate the
anniversary with an open day on September 30. Employees with their
families, Opel aficionados and all interested parties from the Eisenach
region are invited to attend.
“The Opel plant in Eisenach has been setting standards ever since its
opening 25 years ago,” said plant manager Pieter Ruts. “We have
developed a new production system and established a sophisticated
logistics system. Then as now, the Eisenach plant stands for team spirit
and top production quality.”
New beginning with Opel
Two years before the first Astra from Eisenach left the plant, Opel
started manufacturing the Vectra in Thuringia, thus becoming the first
West German carmaker to commit itself to the new federal states.
Simultaneously the company laid the foundations for the revitalization
of automotive production in the region by opening the new plant and
investing more than one billion Deutsch Mark. Furthermore, Opel also
created numerous new jobs, also within the supplier industry.
Only eight months after start of production of the Opel Astra, the first
Opel Corsa drove off the production line in 1993. The first Opel Corsa “made in
Eisenach” is also the first ever Opel Corsa “made in Germany”. Previously, it
had only been built in the Spanish plant in Zaragoza. In 2012, the
small car welcomed a brother to its home – the stylish Opel ADAM.
Democratic decision
The two founding fathers behind Opel’s Eisenach plant are Dr. Wolfram
Liedtke and Louis Hughes. Liedtke, managing director of the
Automobilwerk Eisenach (AWE) and former Opel Chairman Hughes battled
significant opposition to make a case for the location. Originally, the
Automotive Combine of the German Democratic Republic had other plans for
the AWE. However, as these plans remain vague for a long time and the
future of the people in Eisenach is thus uncertain, Opel decided to
present a convincing concept. Liedtke then managed to take AWE out of
the combine and Eisenach could forge its own destiny.
The workforce gets behind Liedtke, determined to safeguard the plant
and their own future. A democratic decision follows during a staff
meeting in 1990. Opel Chairman Hughes travels to Eisenach especially and
answers the employee’s questions. In the end, a vast majority votes for
a future with Opel.
Then things happen really fast, always under the motto “Opel banks on
Eisenach”. The company is the first European manufacturer to introduce
completely new manufacturing methods when the new Opel production system
was implemented. It is based on five guided principles: employee
involvement, continuous improvement, quality control from the start,
standardization and short throughput times thanks to smooth logistics.
The Opel plant in Eisenach has also been setting standard in
environmental management for its opening. The consistent use of
water-soluble paints in the modern paint shop along with recycling loops
to re-use production residues in all areas are just two examples of the
sustainable system.
But automotive production is not the only thing Opel is concentrating
on in Thuringia. A training facility for dealership employees was
opened in Eisenach in 2001, where experienced coaches deliver sessions
on technical and commercial topics.
Look behind the scenes
On September 30, visitors will be able get close to the eventful
history of the plant. For example, when founding fathers Liedtke and
Hughes along with Harald Lieske, who was chairman of the works council
for many years, receive a special distinction and will talk about their
experiences. Furthermore, Opel fans will get the chance to look behind
the scenes in production and find out how ADAM and Corsa are built and
test or even buy one of the bestsellers from the company’s current
product portfolio.
In addition to the central stage, numerous clubs, association and
institutions from the region will set up stands. And obviously, there
will be an entertaining program for visitors of all age groups. Doors
will open for the public at 10:00 CET.
Study on vehicle dependability: Opel top in city cars and mid-size segment
Auto Test Winner 2017: Opel Ampera-e biggest “Technical Innovation”
Joint awards ceremony: Auto Test winners and the results of the J.D.
Power customer satisfaction survey have been announced jointly since
2008.
Champion of personalization and dependability: Opel ADAM tops its class in the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study.
The J.D. Power market researchers are an institution when it comes to
quality and customer satisfaction. In the biggest automobile customer
satisfaction survey in Germany, the VDS (Vehicle Dependability Study),
car owners were asked about the quality and reliability of their one to
three-year-old vehicles. Drivers of the Opel ADAM and Opel Insignia gave their cars excellent ratings – the best in their segments. At the joint awards ceremony with the trade magazine Auto Test
yesterday evening in Cologne, Opel Vice President Quality Elvira Tölkes
accepted the trophies for the victorious duo.
Best in class: In the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study owners
gave the Opel Insignia the highest marks for cars in the midsize
segment.
In addition, Jürgen
Keller, Opel Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales Germany
also collected another prize: the Opel Ampera-e, with its electric range of 520 kilometers (according to the New European Driving Cycle) is Auto TestWinner 2017. The electric car received the award for best “Technical Innovation” of the year.
At the awards ceremony in Cologne, Elvira Tölkes said, “We place very
high value on the quality of our cars delivered to our customers. In
addition, the J.D. Power study shows that Opel also sets high standards
in terms of reliability and durability across the entire portfolio from
the chic urban car Opel ADAM to the Opel Insignia. So we are delighted
to have received both of these awards.”
“Beyond high quality, what also distinguishes Opel is that we make
future technologies accessible to so many people. Good examples of this
are the personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar as well
as the current market launch of the revolutionary electric vehicle Opel
Ampera-e. Our electric car is a true range champion, without a doubt a
major innovation and thus a worthy Auto Testwinner 2017,” added Jürgen Keller.
This year J.D. Power surveyed 14,000 people about their experiences
with their car in online interviews. The study’s questions are grouped
into the categories quality/dependability, appearance and running costs.
All responses result in a ranking in which the brand or model with the
lowest number of faults emerges as the winner. J.D. Power analyzed a
total of 71 car models.
Auto Test winners and the results of the J.D. Power customer satisfaction survey have been announced jointly since 2008.
Embedded satellite navigation and Opel OnStar with Destination Download
Best connections: compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Opel Corsa drivers can now enjoy integrated navigation with Navi 4.0 IntelliLink.
A new infotainment system named Navi 4.0 IntelliLink is immediately
available for Opel’s small car champions, KARL, ADAM and Corsa. Drivers
can now enjoy infotainment with integrated navigation and all the
benefits of OnStar, Opel’s personal connectivity and mobility assistant –
including Destination Download – to reach their destination with high
precision and convenient routing.
In addition to the advantages of the R 4.0 IntelliLink system –
seven-inch touch screen display, Bluetooth-connectivity as well as both
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility – Navi 4.0 IntelliLink
features European roadmaps displayed in 2D or 3D and dynamic route
guidance via TMC. With the Opel OnStar “guardian angel” at their side,
drivers can also have destinations sent straight to the navigation
system (Destination Download), either by the OnStar advisor or via the
MyOpel app.
With the lean, clear menu structures of Navi 4.0 IntelliLink and its
intuitive usability, the Opel KARL, ADAM and Corsa belong to the best
connected small cars on the market.
Make it yours: New Opel Exclusive program will allow customers to
choose from an unlimited amount of colors for their new Insignia.
New
level of personalization: New Opel Exclusive concept presented at Geneva Motor
Show
Unlimited
choice: Customers can now stand out with the color of their choice
Additional
options: Exclusive wheels, leather options and design details available
Style
and profile: 4K digital showroom to configure and share
When Opel launched the ADAM in 2013, it not only marked the introduction
of a new small car to the market – it also tapped in to the increasing demand
for more personalization and individualization.
Ever since then, the company
has been looking into extending this service and introducing a program that
allows a growing amount of customers to configure their car according to their
own personal taste. With the introduction of the new Opel Insignia, the
Rüsselsheim-based carmaker will offer a new level of individualization called Opel
Exclusive. In a first step, it will provide Opel Insignia buyers with an
unlimited choice of colors and a selection of alloy wheels. Later, customers
will also have access to an assortment of leather options and other design
details that will enable them to create a car that stands out from the crowd
and reflects their personal choice.
Selecting the perfect color for a new car can
sometimes prove to be more difficult than first meets the eye. The red offered
by the carmaker might be too dark, the blue too light or the green tone too
close to mint according to personal taste. Therefore, customers sometimes have
to accept a compromise when purchasing the car they really want. Opel will be the
first volume manufacturer to introduce a solution for this conundrum with the launch
of the Opel Exclusive program during the Geneva Motor Show. However, despite
the name maybe suggesting otherwise – Exclusive does not mean elitist or only
accessible to a select few. Instead, the name reflects Opel’s desire to give
customers the chance to create something that is exclusive to their own
personal taste, enabling them to reward themselves via personal expression in a
way that adds value for them.
“Opel Exclusive almost knows no limits. Individualized
colors, customizable design details and inimitable comfort features help you
create the Insignia of your choice and exactly how you want it. Literally
unique to you,” said Opel CMO Tina Müller.
Stand out from the crowd
with your exclusive color
When customizing their new Opel Insignia, Opel
Exclusive customers can choose from up to 15 pre-defined colors ranging from Electric
Yellow to Pure Black or from Scorpio Grey to Power Blue. These are available in
addition to the regular colors and solely available to Opel Exclusive clients. However,
this is by no means all. Customers looking for even more individualization can create
their own color no matter whether it is the shade of their favorite silk tie or
the color of the eyes of a loved one.
The Opel experts will match the color
when a sample is provided so that everybody can have a car in their preferred
color.
With the choice of color made, Opel Exclusive
customers can add a further level of customization by selecting what they want
the paintwork to say about them. Opel will offer three distinctive finishes.
The tri-coat paint finish is an innovative mixing ratio. It owes its intensive
and smooth appearance to the three-layer coating. The metallic paint finish reflects
more incident light, which gives the paint its sparkling shine. And the pearl
paint finish dazzles with fine layers of crystals embedded in the paint finish
that help bring out an exceptionally natural pearly shine.
In addition to the choice of color and paint finish,
Opel Exclusive will also offer a selection of four new and exclusive alloy
wheels to help customers create their own unique car. Ranging from 18 to
20 inches, the wheels bring a new level of pure dynamism to the Insignia with
their breathtaking design. Additionally, going forward Opel will offer a range
of exclusive leather options and decorative design elements so that customers
can customize the car even further.
New
digital showroom to configure and share
As part of the Exclusive program, Opel will also
be exploring new digital solutions such as showroom images in 4K, an ultra-high
definition resolution, and augmented reality to allow customers to easily
experience their new vehicle in amazing definition while enjoying an immersive
experience. The focus is on creating state-of-the-art digital experiences
following the mobile first principle and allowing customers wherever they are
to experiment when configuring their own personal car. Once they have
configured the car of their dreams, potential buyers can then share their ideas
with their social media network.
Opel Insignia buyers will be able to use the Exclusive
program to personalize their car as of this summer. Prices will be communicated
closer to the official market launch.
Opel Astra, the reigning European Car of the Year, has been selected
as a finalist for the 2017 Wesbank South African Car of the Year (COTY)
competition. This is the second successive year in which an Opel has
been named COTY finalist in South Africa after Opel ADAM and Opel Corsa were voted
as finalists last year.
Opel Astra which was launched in South Africa in April this year has
received great accolades from local as well as international media.
Packed with segment leading safety, infotainment and driver aid
technology, the Opel Astra is a game changer in the mid-size hatchback
segment giving buyers access to technology usually reserved for luxury
vehicles.
“We’ve won the big European prize and it would be a real honour to
add the local trophy to our cabinet,” commented Brian Olson, vice
president vehicle sales, service, and marketing GM Sub-Saharan Africa.
“There’s no doubt that Europe’s top automotive communicators found the
Astra to be the best of the best and we hope that evaluators from the
South African Guild of Motoring Journalists reach the same conclusion.
Local customers have certainly recognized the Astra as the best in its
class, so far demand has far outstripped supply with the new Astra
achieving its best market share in 20 years”
Of course, COTY success is not new to the Opel brand, both here and
abroad. In 1985 a previous Astra generation was the European COTY, while
on the local front Opel products were chosen by the SAGMJ evaluators as
their benchmark car in 1991, 1994 and 1995.
Past and present Opel Astra models clearly have got what it takes to win.
The current Opel Astra has averaged close to 100 units a month since launch,
and holds about 10 percent of the C-segment hatchback market share,
April to August.
The SAGMJ COTY jury will evaluate the Opel Astra and the other finalists
in early February 2017, with the winner announced on 15 March 2017.

15 vehicles recovered with help of Opel OnStar Stolen Vehicle Assistance
Every second new Opel equipped with OnStar
Opel OnStar has already recorded around 1.5 million interactions with customers who make contact by phone, mobile app or the blue OnStar service button.
“Having that guardian angel there is just fantastic!” says Charlotte Tyson about OnStar, the personal connectivity and service assistant introduced by Opel in August 2015. Charlotte from England was one of the first drivers in Europe to experience how OnStar automatically reacts in an emergency. Last October she was on the way to one of her friends when she was involved in a head-on collision with another car. As the airbags in her Corsa deployed, vehicle sensors automatically alerted an OnStar advisor – Charlotte’s guardian angel – who notified the emergency services and stayed with her on the phone until they arrived at the scene of the accident.
Automatic crash response is just one of the many innovative features of Opel OnStar, which makes driving more convenient and ensures best connectivity. The unique service with friendly advisors instead of machines also remotely unlocks doors, downloads destinations directly to the vehicle, sends emails on vehicle health and offers a 4G/LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Less than nine months after its launch, Opel OnStar has already recorded around 1.5 million interactions with customers who make contact by phone, mobile app or the blue OnStar service button. Currently every second new Opel delivered features OnStar.
Opel OnStar is available on all Opel passenger cars, from ADAM, KARL, Corsa and Astra, to Meriva, Mokka, Cascada, Zafira Tourer and Insignia. Less than nine months after launch, Opel OnStar has already recorded around 1.5 million customer interactions.
“These unbelievable numbers prove that Opel OnStar is a resounding success! Less than a year after launch, our personal connectivity and service assistant is clearly on its way to becoming the helpful companion every driver of an Opel passenger car wants to have at their side”, exclaims Tina Müller, Chief Marketing Officer Opel Group. “The smartphone generation are ecstatic about the 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, while services such as automatic Emergency Call Service provide the older generation with the safety and security they long to have when driving.”
Opel OnStar - Emergency Call Service
The most popular service is the myOpel mobile app, which to date customers with smartphones have launched around 700,000 times by. The app’s most popular features so far are remote locking/unlocking of doors, online vehicle location and honking the vehicle’s horn and flashing its lights. Customers can also call up important data such as oil condition or tire pressures, send destinations to the in-car navigation system and manage the car’s embedded Wi-Fi hotspot, which allows up to seven devices to connect in and around the vehicle.
The favorite Opel OnStar service is the myOpel app. To date, customers with smartphones have launched the app 700,000 times. The most popular features: locking/unlocking of doors, vehicle location, honking the horn and flashing the lights.

Campaign has become internet event: More than 3.3 million visitors to website
Exactly my style: Users create over 100,000 unique Opel ADAM variants
An Opel ADAM model for every country: Twelve winners of online competition named
Under the motto “Endless possibilities – exactly my style“, Opel has invited the internet and social media community to create its very own unique Opel ADAM on www.adamyourself.com since December. The goal is to turn the best Opel ADAM design into reality. The response to the campaign with ten creative lifestyle bloggers from different countries in Europe has been huge: to date, more than 3.3 million users from all over Europe have visited the website and spent an average of more than four minutes clicking through the various menus and stories. In the process, they have created more than 100,000 individual Opel ADAM styles, each exactly the way its creator wanted it. And now the twelve country winners have been named (two of the ten bloggers have each created styles for two countries). Opel ADAM designs will already begin rolling off the assembly line in their respective country from this fall.
“With #ADAMyourself we went straight to where the Opel ADAM clientele is – the internet. The young bloggers were always part of the action and posted a lot of fun and interesting stories about our bold city car on social media channels. And the community submitted a total of over 2.6 million votes for the different ADAM designs. The campaign is the best example of how much enthusiasm the car and lifestyle combination can create – and how individuals can make their dream car become reality,” says Elsa Touchard, brand manager strategy and sponsoring, about the online campaign’s success to date.
So much creativity made it a real challenge for Opel representatives and the ten European bloggers to choose the winner from each country’s ten most popular ADAM variants. In Germany, Vanessa S. won with her stylish “Red Velvet Cake” ADAM. The new design variant will be exclusively produced for the German market – and as winner of the competition, Vanessa S. will be the official “advertising face” for “her” Opel ADAM.
Germany: And the winner is “Red Velvet Cake”.
But before that, the national winners will head to Berlin in mid-April for the winners’ event.
There the group of twelve will stay in an exclusive ADAM loft and take part in video and photo shoots. Of course Opel ADAM fans will be kept updated on all news on social media channels and on www.adamyourself.com.
