So we are especially pleased to be able to be there with the most attractive and sporty model portfolio we have ever had in our over 150-year history. Together with our return to motorsports and the German National Soccer League, this gives us more than enough reason to say: Opel is back!”

Opel is back in sports: Rallying, circuit racing, OPC and German Soccer League
The spotlight is on Opel sports activities at the 18th annual fan festival at Germany’s northern-most race track. For the first time, visitors can get a glimpse of the ADAM in its rallye outfit off of ADAC Opel Rallye Cup racetrack. The 800 square-meter exhibition space will showcase eye-catching high-performance models from Opel Performance Center – Insignia OPC, Astra OPC and Corsa OPC, and the youngest Opel family members Cascada and Mokka are also sure to turn heads.

But experiencing pure, intense emotions is not limited to the motorsports arena. This season Opel revived its soccer activities, becoming an official premium partner in the German National Soccer League and supporting the teams of Champion League finalist Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Mainz 05, SC Freiburg and Fortuna Düsseldorf. Internationally, Opel also supports the top Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul and the Dutch team Feyenoord Rotterdam; our British sister brand has partnered with the national teams of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Oschersleben, visitors can take part in goal-scoring contests and demonstrate their accuracy against the “robo-goalie”.

Perfect union: Motorsports meet tradition and show
The “Old Opel Get-together” revives the automotive glamor of times past – for the last 12 years, Opel classic car enthusiasts have gathered in Oschersleben with their historic models to celebrate the brand’s extraordinary automobile history. Opel Classic provides extra thrills with two special highlights: a 1983 Commodore C ambulance and an Opel Blitz fire truck from the 1960s. Both models are in active use in Oschersleben, with the Blitz offering a “cool down” with the fire hose in case some visitors need a respite from summer temperatures.

In line: The classic cars parade is real highlight at Oschersleben

Shining: A real fan has been working hard on his car – preparing, painting, polishing the beloved Opel

In addition to a host of contests and automotive showpieces, there is lots of entertainment off the track – after all, sharing this experience is what the world’s largest Opel gathering is about for most visitors. A special fan corner is available in the exhibition hall for those who want to share ideas and car talk undisturbed. In the evenings party fun is guaranteed by DJs and entertainers like Olaf Henning with “Hüttengaudi”, the “Deutschrock Party”, “House Night” and the “89.0 RTL Adam Opel Party Night”; and of course the “Miss Opel 2013” beauty pageant will take place on Friday night. Featuring closed loop combustion control and an aluminum block, the new 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC is the first diesel from Opel to comply with future Euro 6 emissions requirements. The engine will be available in a variety of power outputs across several carlines.

Class leading attenuation of noise, vibration and harshness, high power/torque density and low fuel consumption were the main development objectives. Initially maximum power and torque have been increased versus the 1.7 liter engine to 100 kW/136 hp and 320 Nm respectively, while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 10 % compared with similarly powerful 2.0 liter diesels.

“The comprehensive renewal of our powertrain portfolio continues at wide-open throttle,” said Dr. Thomas Sedran, Deputy Chairman of the Opel Management Board. “Our new 1.6 liter diesel will set benchmarks for refinement, performance and environmental compatibility. By the end of this year we will have launched three all-new generations of gasoline and diesel engines, as part of our roll-out of 23 new models and 13 new powertrains by 2016.”

The new 1.6 liter diesel and its innovative engine control unit have been entirely developed in-house by a global team of engineers in Turin, Ruesselsheim and the USA. This approach has enabled a comprehensive system optimization from the very beginning of the design process. Beginning in spring, the 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC will be manufactured at the same “flex plant” as the new 1.6 liter gasoline engine, in Szentgotthard in Hungary.

!NEW! Official Start of Production for Opel ADAM: Lifestyle and Innovations “Made in Eisenach”

    • Only car in its segment produced in Germany
    • Thuringia plant boasts flexible production and highest quality
    • Investments total 190 million euros
    • Over 16,000 orders received before official market premiere on January 19
    • Individualization champion with over 61,000 combination possibilities for exterior and almost 82,000 for interior
    • Opel ADAM will soon be supported by Siri Eyes Free Mode on iPhone

Big venue for a small car: today Opel celebrated the official start of production of its new lifestyle small car ADAM in the Eisenach plant. Many special guests came in honor of the ADAM. “This is a special moment for Eisenach and for the entire company. The ADAM is bold, innovative and versatile, and thus embodies the pioneering spirit that is moving Opel into a new era,” says Steve Girsky, Opel Supervisory Board Chairman, GM Vice Chairman and President GM Europe.

Both Thuringia’s Minister of Economics Matthias Machnig and Deputy Chairman of the Opel Management Board Dr. Thomas Sedran underlined the fact that Opel is the only automaker that not only develops but also builds a small car in Germany. Sedran: “The ADAM is a clear commitment to our plant in Eisenach and to Germany as a whole.” With its vast possibilities for individualization, the ADAM poses challenges for planning, logistics and manufacturing. “The highly qualified Eisenach team as well as everyone in the company who has worked on this project can be proud of this day,” added Sedran.

High jumper Ariane Friedrich was also proud: The European Athletics Indoor Champion 2009 and multiple German champion had the honor of driving the ADAM off the assembly line next to Opel Supervisory Board Chairman Steve Girsky – on a day no less special than her birthday.

Investments of 190 million euros in flexible and modern manufacturing facilities

The key prerequisite to build the ADAM is the ability to be flexible. After all, there is no other car in this class in the world that can offer more than 61,000 variants for the exterior and nearly 82,000 for the interior – ranging from a vast selection of colors and rims to special details like different headliners. Dr. Sedran says, “Whoever orders an ADAM today can be quite certain that he/she won’t see an identical car. Almost every ADAM will be unique – that’s how extensive the diverse range is that we are building here.” Opel invested around 190 million euros to be able to produce this second car line in Eisenach in addition to the Corsa.

The car “Made in Eisenach” already made a huge impression on the public after it was presented at the Paris Motor Show last fall. Now the official premiere at Opel dealerships in Germany is right around the corner on January 19. “Already today we have more than 16,000 orders from all across Europe,” says Dr. Thomas Sedran.

    Extravaganza of affordable innovations

“The ADAM is not only a symbol of Eisenach and Thuringia. It is a symbol of the entire company. Today Opel has the most attractive model portfolio in its 150-year history and the ADAM is a vital part of that,” emphasizes Plant Manager Stefan Fesser. In particular he pointed out the new clever and affordable technologies in the car. The IntelliLink infotainment system makes the ADAM the best connected small car, as it integrates the owner’s iPhone or Android device in the vehicle. ADAM will soon be supported by Siri Eyes Free mode. The lifestyle car also offers a spectacular selection of innovations that to date were only familiar from higher classes, if at all. Unique in the segment are for example a newest-generation Automatic Park Assist (APA II), heated steering wheel, Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA) and the Opel-exclusive, fully integrated rear bicycle carrier FlexFix.
