Opel Corsa Best-selling Small Car in Germany in 2023

  • Every fourth newly registered Opel Corsa already battery-electric
  • Highest Opel Corsa registrations since 2016
  • Vauxhall Corsa also most popular small car in the UK

Opel Corsa has successfully defended its title as the most popular small car in Germany. According to official data published by the Federal Office for Motor Traffic (KBA), the Corsa was the best-selling vehicle in the B segment for the third time in a row in 2023. Total new registrations of almost 54,000 ensured that the small car from Rüsselsheim took first place in its segment. This represents an increase of around 7 per cent compared to 2022 and also means that Corsa registrations reached their highest level since 2016. According to preliminary internal results every fourth newly registered Corsa was a battery-electric Opel Corsa Electric.

Elsewhere, Vauxhall Corsa remains equally popular in the UK where it was the best-selling supermini for the third year in a row, according to the 2023 new car registration figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). With 40,816 units sold, Corsa not only proved to be the most popular supermini on the market in 2023 but was also the country’s third best-selling car overall. It outsold the second best-selling model in the supermini segment by 55.5% (14,568 cars).

Since its premiere in 1982, well over 14.5 million units of the Corsa have been sold worldwide. Last year, Opel launched the new edition of the bestseller – with the characteristic Opel Vizor brand face, intuitive cockpit design, new IntelliLux LED Matrix Light and numerous other top technologies. In the auto motor und sport readers’ choice award “autonis”, Opel Corsa was named “Best New Design of 2023” in the “Small Car” category.

Patrick Dinger, the head of Opel in Germany said: “Our Corsa continues to lead the B segment and represents an important pillar of our car registrations in Germany. This shows, in these times of transformation, that we have the right offer for our customers in our Opel Corsa and Corsa Electric. This year we will continue our transition to becoming a purely electric brand. We will offer at least one battery-electric model in each carline over the course of the year. Opel Crossland successor and all-new Opel Grandland will also be available with pure electric drive.”

Best-Looking Small Car: New Opel Corsa Wins “autonis”

  • “Best New Design 2023”: Small car bestseller Corsa clearly ahead of rivals
  • Trophy lift: Opel head of communications, Harald Hamprecht, accepts award
  • Exciting design: New Opel Corsa with Opel Vizor front and fully digital cockpit
  • Independent jury: More than 14,500 readers of auto motor und sport cast their votes

Opel Corsa is not only best-selling small car of 2021 and 2022 in Germany and the United Kingdom. With its new appearance, including the characteristic Opel Vizor brand fascia and fully digital cockpit, it is now officially best-looking in its market segment. This has been confirmed by more than 14,500 readers of auto motor und sport, German car magazine, who voted new Opel Corsa the “Best New Design of 2023”. An overwhelming majority of 53.7 per cent of the votes in Small Car category went to bestseller from brand with Blitz. Autonis design award therefore goes to Opel for second time in succession. Last year, Opel Rocks Electric won prize in Mini Cars category with a similarly convincing result.

“New Opel Corsa is bold and pure inside and out; it combines practicality with driving pleasure and arouses emotions. Also, it already drives purely electrically and gives our electrification offensive major impetus. At Opel we are very pleased about clear vote,” said Opel Vice President of Communications, Harald Hamprecht, who accepted award during awards ceremony in Stuttgart.

Bold, pure, full of emotions: New Opel Corsa excites with performance and design

New Opel Corsa recently celebrated its world premiere at IAA Mobility in Munich and thrilled public there. As Opel Corsa Electric, it comes in two performance levels: with 100 kW/136 hp and a range of up to 354 kilometres and now with 115 kW/156 hp and up to 402 kilometres of locally emissions-free driving fun (according to WLTP 1).

Designers have made small car bestseller look even sharper and more modern. Most striking feature in front view is unmistakable Opel Vizor, characteristic brand fascia of all new Opel models. Black Vizor stretches across Opel Corsa front and seamlessly integrates grille, full LED headlights at sides and Opel Blitz logo in centre in one visual element. In side view, “cut” C-pillar appears to make roof literally float over vehicle. And at rear, Corsa's name now appears confidently in centre of tailgate. Opel Corsa also creates a modern, feel-good atmosphere in interior. Highlight here – both visually and technically – is optional fully digital cockpit with new infotainment.

New Opel Corsa’s combination of state-of-art technologies and pure, uncompromising design also convinced readers of auto motor und sport. For 18th time, they chose their design favourites online. A total of 14,507 participants cast their votes this year. There were 105 new models in 11 classes to choose from.

[1] Range values determined according to WLTP test procedure methodology (R (EC) No. 715/2007, R (EU) No. 2017/1151). Actual range can vary under everyday conditions and depends on various factors, in particular on personal driving style, route characteristics, outside temperature, use of heating and air conditioning and thermal preconditioning.

Vauxhall Corsa continued success comes on back of being UK’s best-selling supermini in 2022 and best-selling car overall in 2021

With 2,818 new Corsas registered in February, it has reclaimed its crown as not just UK’s best-selling supermini, but the best-selling new car in the country, with a total of 5,243 units registered so far in 2023.

Car’s continued strong popularity with both private and fleet buyers comes on the back of three consecutive years of strong showings for the Corsa. With 35,910 units sold in 2022, it finished last year as the UK’s favourite supermini, while it was the country’s best-selling car overall in 2021.

  • Corsa was UK’s best-selling car in 2021 and February 2022 YTD
  • Customer ordering opens from 6 April with deliveries from Summer

Vauxhall Corsa-e Ultimate

Vauxhall has updated both the Corsa and Mokka model ranges by introducing its new simplified version line-up as well as enhanced pricing making two of its most popular models more appealing than ever.  With orders open from early April, the revised Corsa model range will start from £17,340 OTR and the Mokka from £22,265 OTR, with first customer deliveries expected from August.

The new range comprises of three versions: Design, GS Line and Ultimate:

Design – features Vauxhall’s ‘Bold and Pure’ styling and driver assistance tech

GS Line – combines striking sports styling, inside and out, with advanced comfort and convenience technology

Ultimate – combines an evolution of the GS Line styling with even more premium technologies

New three version line-up is designed to make it easier than ever for customers to choose the right version for them.

Easy to shop – simplified range structure comes with simplified price walks between versions making it easier to understand the value of each version

Strong specification - from entry level, including visual elements of Vauxhall’s new ‘Bold and Pure’ design language, including alloy wheels, classing-leading driver assistance technology and the new ‘Vauxhall Vizor’ brand face on the Mokka and Mokka-e.

Innovative technology at an affordable price – a number of versions have been substantially reduced in price (by up to £3,290) meaning that premium technology is even more accessible than before.

Both the Corsa and Mokka will now be available in Design, GS Line, and Ultimate trim specification, while the 100% electric Corsa-e and Mokka-e will be available in sporty GS Line and Ultimate variants.

New trim line-up has also enabled Vauxhall to streamline the overall number of Corsa and Mokka variants available to customers, making it more transparent to understand the differences between vehicles. The Corsa model range has been streamlined from 15 models to eight, while the Corsa-e has been reduced from three models to two. Mokka sees the version line-up reduced from 16 to 11, while Mokka-e will go from four to two.

Adam Wood, Marketing Director, Vauxhall, said: “We’ve introduced our new simplified trim structure to the Corsa and Mokka vehicle ranges. In doing so, we’ve not only made it easier for buyers to understand the key differences between various trims, but the models are now even better value thanks to a number of pricing enhancements.  The top-spec Corsa Ultimate has been reduced by more than £3,000 meaning that premium innovative technology is now even more accessible on one of Britain’s most popular cars.”

Vauxhall Corsa & Corsa-e

All-electric Vauxhall Corsa-e made up nearly one-in-seven of all Corsas sold last year and is now available in sporty GS Line and Ultimate variants. GS Line replaces previous SRi Premium variants, while Ultimate replaces previous Elite Premium models. Streamlining from previously three variants to two reflects the market demand for the Corsa-e, with customers preferring higher specification trim models.

Vauxhall Corsa GS Line

Corsa-e models will now come standard with Vauxhall’s e-toggle shifter already available on the Mokka-e, replacing the previous ‘cobra’ shifter. The new control allows drivers to select between reverse, neutral and drive, while a Brake (B) button allows drivers to increase energy recovery via the regenerative braking technology.

Vauxhall Corsa-e Ultimate: Interior with e-toggle shifter

Both GS Line and Ultimate Corsa-e models retain identical equipment and technology levels to their outgoing trims, with prices remaining the same. Corsa-e GS Line prices start £27,055 OTR after the current Government Plug-in Car Grant, while Ultimate models start from £29,660.

Importantly, all Corsa-e and Mokka-e models remain eligible for the £1,500 Government Plug-in Car Grant.

Vauxhall Corsa-e features a 50 kWh battery connected to a 136 PS (100 kW) electric motor and is capable of up to up to 222 miles on a single charge under WLTP testing. Supporting up to 100 kW rapid charging, an 80% charge takes just 30 minutes.

As part of its electric vehicle strategy, Vauxhall has worked to ensure Corsa-e variants are more cost efficient to own in the long run over petrol and diesel variants of the Corsa – helping owners offset the higher initial purchase price.

Corsa was the UK’s best-selling new car in 2021 with more than 40,000 models sold. From April, Corsa Design models replace previous SE Edition variants and feature the same equipment and technology, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Speed Sign Recognition, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 7-inch infotainment screen. Prices for Corsa Design variants start from £17,340 OTR, resulting in a £500 price reduction over the outgoing model.

Sporty GS Line replaces previous SRi Edition models and come with new 17-inch black wheels that replace previous 17-inch bi-colour wheels. GS Line features include climate control, rear parking sensors and black exterior styling.  New for GS Line models will also be Vauxhall’s efficient 1.2-litre (75PS) three-cylinder petrol engine, previously unavailable on SRi Edition models. This entry level powertrain means that the GS Line Corsa starts from £19,490 OTR.  Other GS Line versions see a £1,000 price reduction compared to before.

Corsa Ultimate variants remain identical to the current Ultimate range, however, the pricing has been significantly enhanced so it now starts from £23,375 OTR – a £3,150 saving over the previous line-up.  The Ultimate comes with premium features such as adaptive cruise control, lane positioning assist, IntelliLux Adaptive LED Matrix lights, front parking sensors, panoramic rear-view camera, keyless entry, Alcantara trim and heated seats and steering wheel.

Vauxhall Mokka & Mokka-e

Vauxhall Mokka Ultimate

Vauxhall Mokka was the first model to feature Vauxhall’s new ‘Vizor’ front end and Pure Panel interior – features since seen on all new Vauxhall models, including the All-New Astra. The 100% electric Mokka-e is available in GS Line and in Ultimate models, with both models priced equally to their outgoing variants.

Vauxhall Mokka Ultimate

As with Corsa-e, Vauxhall has worked to ensure the Mokka-e range achieves total cost of ownership savings for owners over its petrol and diesel counterparts.

Petrol and diesel Mokka range starts from entry level Design which is identical to outgoing SE Edition variants, but now also available with a 1.2-litre 130PS 6-speed manual and a 1.2-litre 130PS 8-speed automatic. With more choice of engines, the Mokka Design range starts from £22,265 OTR – identical to the outgoing SE Edition.  Standard features on the entry level Mokka include lane departure warning, lane keep assist, speed sign recognition, auto emergency braking, cruise control, automatic lights & wipers, high beam assist, LED headlights & tail lights, Pure Panel twin 7-inch screens and Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity.

GS Line models replace outgoing SRi Premium variants, with the equipment level reflecting customer demand in the sector. GS Line features include the striking two-tone styling with 18-inch bi-colour alloy wheels, black roof and mirrors and sports bodykit.  Climate control, keyless start and power folding door mirrors, rear parking sensors and the upgraded Pure Panel with 10-inch driver and 12-inch infotainment screens.  Mokka GS Line versions now start from £24,640 OTR – £1,500 lower than before.

Ultimate models are now available with a 1.2-litre 130PS 6-speed manual option, previously unavailable on the trim, with the range starting from £28,825 OTR, with Mokka Ultimate range also upgraded with Alcantara seat trim.  Ultimate versions also include keyless entry and start, IntelliLux LED Matrix adaptive headlights, advanced park assist, blind spot alert, adaptive cruise control and lane positioning assist.

Updated Vauxhall Corsa and Mokka range will be available to purchase from April onwards. The entire Vauxhall passenger car range can be ordered entirely online via the Vauxhall Online Store.  The Vauxhall Online Store brings the brand’s showroom experience straight into the comfort of buyers’ homes. Customers can arrange a live video viewing of their vehicle via the Vauxhall Virtual Showroom and proceed to the Online Store to configure their vehicle, personalise finance payments, and place an order, all from the comfort of their home.

Vauxhall Corsa-e helps Formula Woman find future female racing stars

  • Formula Woman applicants complete their on-track assessments in all-electric Vauxhall Corsa-e
  • 740 drivers experienced Vauxhall Corsa-e at circuits across the UK
  • All-electric version of the UK’s best-selling car can cover up to 222 miles* on a single charge and accelerates from 0-60mph in 7.6 seconds
  • Vauxhall Corsa-e helped narrow a list of 50 finalists for the next stage of competition
  • Six eventual winners will compete in full season of GT Cup championship

All-electric Vauxhall Corsa-e has helped find the next female racing stars as part of the global Formula Woman competition. More than 700 women got behind the wheel of the Corsa-e at three different racetracks in the UK during the first round of the Formula Woman assessments.

After receiving thousands of applications, nearly 740 drivers took part in dedicated Formula Woman track days at Bedford Autodrome, Knockhill Racing Circuit and Anglesey Circuit, during which they received tuition behind the wheel of the Vauxhall Corsa-e, the all-electric version of the UK’s best-selling car in 2021. The competition, which aims to find the next top female racing driver, was open to women over 17 with a full driving licence and little or no previous racing experience.

During the day, the participants learned the fundamentals of driving on track, including racing lines and racecraft. As well as the on-track driving, each day consisted of a briefing, written and fitness tests as well as media training. Through analysing their performance in the Corsa-e as well as on the other tests, Formula Woman judges were able to pick 50 finalists from the 740 entries who will progress to the next round of assessments.

Graeme Glew, Formula Woman Founder, commented: “Vauxhall Corsa-e really did prove to be a fabulous choice for the assessments. We were delighted with how it performed throughout, not missing a beat. It was a very easy car to drive and handled very well, it just couldn’t be faulted.”

Jeremy Townsend, Communications Director, Vauxhall, said: “We were delighted to be able to support the Formula Woman competition. It was a great opportunity for the applicants to put the all-electric Corsa-e through its paces and experience its impressive acceleration and agile handling. We’re wishing the finalists all the best for the future.”

Zero-emissions-in-use Corsa-e features a 50kWh battery, allowing it to travel up to 222 miles* on a single charge under WLTP testing. Supporting up to 100kW rapid charging, an 80% charge takes just 30 minutes, while a 100kW (136PS) electric motor enables Vauxhall Corsa-e to accelerate from 0-60mph in 7.6 seconds.

As well as the assessments in the Vauxhall Corsa-e, Formula Woman participants were invited to take part in further track days, simulator sessions and 1:1 driver training to help them prepare for the competition.

Formula Woman is currently preparing the 50 finalists for the next round of assessments on 2nd and 3rd March. From there, 15 drivers will progress to the penultimate stage of the competition on 4th March. The six winners will then be selected on 10th-11th March, when Vauxhall will also be providing two Corsa-e models for the finalists to use for track familiarisation. From the six winners, four drivers will claim the prize of a full season competing in the GT Cup championship, with two reserves.

Overall, the brand recorded a total of 15,868 new passenger car registrations in March and 24,826 year-to-date.

Commenting on the results, Paul Willcox, Managing Director, Vauxhall, said: “We’re delighted the new Vauxhall Corsa is the UK’s best-selling car in the first quarter of 2021. As well as passenger cars, we’ve seen strong LCV sales with the Combo number one in its segment and also high demand for our game-changing, all-electric Vivaro-e.

“Interest in Vauxhall electric vehicles, both cars and vans, is strong and growing. Vauxhall has a wide range of EVs on sale at affordable prices, including the all-new Mokka-e SUV that has just launched. We are very much looking forward to welcoming customers back safely into our network this month.”

All-new fifth generation Corsa is available with a fully-electric powertrain or a choice of efficient petrol or diesel engines. Zero-emissions Corsa-e was voted The Sun Car of the Year, thanks to its 209-mile WLTP range, affordable price and fun driving dynamics.

  • A fifth generation Opel Corsa is the milestone car
  • Figueruelas, cornerstone of the Aragón economy
  • Milestone coincides with GM’s celebrations of 500 million manufactured cars

Proud employees: Red Opel Corsa is the 12 millionth car produced in Zaragoza.
A new milestone has been set in the General Motors España plant in Figueruelas: The 12 millionth unit rolled of the production line, a fifth generation Opel Corsa Color Edition. The Corsa, Opel’s perennial bestseller, mainly targets a young audience and to date 10 million units have been manufactured in the Zaragoza plant in its almost 33 years of age making it a key player in reaching this production milestone.

Celebrating 12 million cars from Zaragoza: Antonio Cobo, Managing Director of GM Spain, and Francisco Esteban Gil, production employee from the press shop.
“Today is a day for celebrations, but also of gratitude. I would like to say 12 million thanks here today. One for each of the Corsa, Kadett, Astra, Tigra, Combo, Meriva and Mokka, that, during the last three decades, have promoted quality made in Spain not only throughout Europe but also beyond. I would also like to say thank you to each of the customers that put their trust in us,” said Antonio Cobo, Managing Director of GM España.

Antonio Cobo, Managing Director of GM Spain, gave a speech at the event in Zaragoza.
The attractive fifth generation Opel Corsa offers a modern appearance and a refined driving experience, with a new chassis and an optimized steering, combining German engineering with emotional design, superior connectivity and an unrivalled price/performance ratio. The new generation of gasoline engines and the thoroughly improved turbo diesel engines, ensure a new level of comfort along with lively performance combined with minimum consumption and reduced emissions.

The car that represents the 12 millionth unit is a five-door Opel Corsa Color Edition, equipped with an efficient new three cylinder 1.0 Turbo engine with 115 Hp. The magma red Corsa with a black roof is intended for the German market and comes with extensive connectivity features. The IntelliLink infotainment system brings the world smartphones to the car. Furthermore, the Corsa can look to the latest advances in active safety and driver assistance systems.

The anniversary car rolled off the production line this morning, driven by employee number 12,000: Francisco Esteban Gil Cañete. Cañete, an hourly production employee from the press shop has been with the company since 1989.

Since its inauguration in 1982, the GM España factory in Figueruelas has been a cornerstone of the economy in Aragón. Its economic value – the number of employees and automotive supply industry park that has been created in the direct vicinity – are vital for the region. Both General Motors and Opel have placed a lot of faith in the Spanish plant in terms of continuous investments that currently exceed euro 4.5 billion, nearly half of the total investment coming in the last ten years.

Its impact on the creation of direct and indirect employment is immense. In addition to the more than 5,000 employees of GM España, a further 28,000 people are employed by the almost 300 suppliers located in Aragón.

The Figueruelas plant is an essential part of the Opel strategy to return to profitability and of the new product offensive that will see the introduction of 27 new models and 17 new engines by 2018.

This new milestone reached by the Aragón plant coincides with the celebration of the 500 million cars produced by the Opel parent company, General Motors, of which more than 68 million have been Opels and 3.7 million of these having been sold in Spain. In total, General Motors has sold nearly 4 million automobiles of many of its brands in Spain.

!NEW! Vauxhall's New Corsa Boosts Image with Guinness World Records' Attempt

  • New car to create 7,000-mile-long GPS picture all over UK
  • Final image will have particular relevance to public on day of release

GPS artist Jeremy Wood, outside Celtic Football Club with New Corsa
Few cars are as widely known in Britain as Vauxhall’s Corsa, and to celebrate the launch of the Fourth Generation model an early prototype car is being used to achieve the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS’ title for the Largest GPS Drawing.

The image is being generated by Jeremy Wood, one of the pioneers of GPS-art, but will have the final flourishes applied by motoring journalists as they test New Corsa for the first time during a UK wide launch organised by Vauxhall this month.

On completion, Vauxhall aims to have achieved the world record for the Largest GPS Drawing (minimum distance to beat is 4,451 miles) while at the same time visiting most of Britain’s towns and cities as part of an epic, month-long endurance drive that will cover over 7,000 miles of the UK’s mainland.

When the final image is revealed at the end of October, it will stretch from Scotland to the South Coast of England and will be recognised as one of the most spectacular virtual drawings the world has ever seen. It will also have particular relevance to the day on which it goes live.

GPS-art combines drawing, travelling (in many different forms) and technology to create art-work on a very large scale. GPS receivers determine the artist’s position by trilateration of microwave signals from satellites orbiting at 12,500 miles altitude. Tracks of a journey are recorded in the GPS receiver’s memory via a transponder (which in this case is fitted to the Corsa’s roof) and can then be downloaded.

‘Corsas can be found in every village, town and city around the UK, so we wanted to visit as many locations as possible during the record attempt to raise awareness of the new car,’ said Simon Hucknall, PR Manager for Vauxhall Product & Heritage. ‘We also wanted to create a truly unifying image using modern technology, which squared well with the level of innovation in the new car.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS is excited that we’re already close to breaking the record, and if we do, our car and GPS artist will have covered in a month what many motorists drive in a year.’

GPS artist, Jeremy Wood, has been creating ‘digital marks’ on water, over-land and in the air for more than a decade. His work is exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collection of London Transport Museum, the V&A and University of Arts in London.

‘This is by far the most challenging commission that I’ve taken on,’ said Jeremy. ‘In order to make the image instantly recognisable, I’ve driven New Corsa on a huge mix of roads and travelled some of the most convoluted routes to ensure that the outlines are clear and memorable.’

But despite the daunting task and epic mileage, Jeremy has nothing but praise for his early, pre-production Corsa 1.0-litre ECOTEC: ‘It’s wonderfully comfortable and quiet for covering a high mileage every day – not what I expected from a small car. It’s also averaged 50mpg, which given my stop-start work has been a pleasant surprise.’

Jeremy’s final image will be revealed at the end of October, through multiple media and social network channels. Not only is it set to become a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title, but the subject of the picture will have a particular resonance with the British public on the day of its release.

New Corsa is now on sale through Vauxhall dealers at a starting price of £8,995.
