Vauxhall scores a 1-2 finish with Corsa and Mokka as UK's two best-sellers in February

Vauxhall Corsa continued success comes on back of being UK’s best-selling supermini in 2022 and best-selling car overall in 2021

Vauxhall has the two best-selling cars in the UK in February, with the award-winning Vauxhall Corsa reclaiming its place as the UK’s best-selling car, and the Vauxhall Mokka as the second-most registered car in the month, according to the latest vehicle registration figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

With 2,818 new Corsas registered in February, it has reclaimed its crown as not just UK’s best-selling supermini, but the best-selling new car in the country, with a total of 5,243 units registered so far in 2023.   

Car’s continued strong popularity with both private and fleet buyers comes on the back of three consecutive years of strong showings for the Corsa. With 35,910 units sold in 2022, it finished last year as the UK’s favourite supermini, while it was the country’s best-selling car overall in 2021.

With 1,805 sold in February, Vauxhall Mokka joins Corsa at the top of the sales charts, being the second-best selling car in the country for February and the best-selling compact crossover (B-SUV). Both the Mokka and Corsa are available to buyers as fully electric variants – Corsa Electric and Mokka Electric.

Vauxhall’s electrification strategy includes a commitment to be a fully-electric brand by 2028. It is also one of the few manufacturers in the country able to offer fleets and private buyers an electric van across its entire model range.

Both the Vauxhall Corsa and Mokka are available with efficient petrol engines as well as with a fully electric powertrain. Using the multi-powertrain CMP platform, the electric variants of these cars are powered by a 50 kWh battery and a 136 PS (100 kW) electric motor. Capable of supporting up to 100 kW rapid charging, an 80% charge for both takes just 30 minutes to complete. Corsa Electric has a range of 222 miles (WLTP) while Mokka Electric can reach up to 209 miles (WTLP) on a full charge.

Opel Corsa 

Opel quality for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) is at an all-time high. Within the past twelve months, for example, launch quality of new cars has been increased by 25 per cent. This value results from the manufacturer's internally defined production standards as well as from customer feedback within the first year after purchase. Most recently launched Opel Corsa and Opel Mokka models demonstrate first-class production quality right from the start – regardless of whether they are efficient combustion engines or battery-electric vehicles.

There are good reasons for this quality improvement: Opel has set itself the goal of zero faults. To achieve this, the Rüsselsheim automaker has also introduced new analysis methods that have a predictive effect in production. Such forecasting systems recognise when parameters change in such a way that they could lead to possible errors in production and intervene preventively. Result: no faulty parts are produced in the first place, production continues undisturbed, and quality is consistently high.

Here, the five-door Opel Astra and soon also Opel Astra Sports Tourer estate will roll off the production line with German precision. 

All-New Opel Astra: Assembly in Rüsselsheim 

All versions of the Opel Grandland are manufactured in Eisenach to the highest quality standards. This is also confirmed by the latest TÜV report, in which Opel's SUV flagship was ranked an excellent 11th overall out of all 128 models inspected. In addition, according to the 2022 ADAC breakdown statistics, Opel models in various market segments, from Grandland and Crossland to ADAM, stand out as reliable used cars.

Opel engineers are also focused on further improving long-term quality. To this end, cooperation with suppliers has been intensified. Engineers speak of “robustness” here when defining running times and standards for parts and components. In addition to the well-known customer satisfaction studies, the quality guardians from Rüsselsheim also evaluate reviews and suggestions in forums and other social media channels. Furthermore, Opel dealers are involved as early as possible to learn from them, from the customer's point of view, where further improvements are possible. All feedback is taken seriously and seen as an opportunity to improve quality.

New Opel Corsa continues its winning ways and has now claimed one of the most important awards in the German automobile industry – the “Golden Steering Wheel 2020”. All-electric Corsa-e received the award today. Opel Corsa-e clearly defeated tough rivals to take the first prize in the small car category. Germany’s best-selling small car is as electrifying for the experts and readers of Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag as for customers.

“Opel is electric”, says Opel CEO, Michael Lohscheller, “and our new Opel Corsa-e is the best proof. It shows that an electric car today can be not only dynamic and practical, but also affordable for all. We are proud of the way the Opel Corsa-e convinces everyone: our customers, the readers of Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag, as well as the expert jury and celebrities.”

As usual, the winners had to clear two hurdles on the way victory. First, the readers of Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag elected their three favourites in each category for the final. A jury of journalists, racing drivers and car experts then tested each finalist on the DEKRA-Lausitzring racetrack, using criteria based on the Auto Bild test method. With a total of 3,218 points, the new Opel Corsa-e ultimately overcame strong “small car” competition from the Hyundai i20 in second and the VW e-Up in third, with an advantage of 141 and 431 points respectively.

With 100 kW (136 hp) and 260 Newton metres of torque from the first squeeze of the accelerator,  Opel Corsa-e offers state-of-the-art electric mobility. With a range of up to 337 km according to the WLTP 1 cycle, the agile five-seater is suitable for every-day use. Using 100 kW DC, the 50 kWh battery can be fast-charged to up to 80 per cent state-of-charge in 30 minutes. Opel Corsa-e is ready for all charging options – via wall box, high-speed charging or cable for household sockets.

New engines: Ideal balance between efficiency and performance

Lively yet economical petrol and diesel engines offer power outputs ranging from 74 W (100 hp) to 96 kW (130 hp). Moderate fuel consumption and superior performance are characteristic of all powertrain options (preliminary fuel consumption NEDC 1: combined 3.8-4.8 l/100km, 100-111 g/km CO2).

• Fun starts with the entry-level 74 kW (100 hp) 1.2 Turbo combined with a six-speed manual gearbox (preliminary fuel consumption NEDC 1: combined 4.6 l/100km, 104 g/km CO2).
• Higher performance is supplied by the 96 kW (130 hp) 1.2 Turbo. Despite the strong power output, fuel consumption of the all-aluminium engine remains moderate with either of the six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions (preliminary fuel consumption NEDC1: combined 4.5-4.8 l/100km, 103-111 g/km CO2).

Wide torque plateau for petrol engines: Top driveability

High efficiency and lively performance are characteristic of the new petrol engines. Internal friction and friction losses are minimised. Turbocharger also reacts immediately, with strong torque development already at low rpm. Maximum torque of the 74 kW (100 hp) 1.2 is 205 Nm; the top 96 kW (130 hp) unit even develops 230 Nm. With the majority of maximum torque available in a wide band, both engines are notable for their high driveability. At least 95 per cent of maximum torque is available between 1,500 and 3,750 rpm – in combination with the low vehicle weight, this enables very good driveability.

Driving performance matches the high efficiency of the engines. All-new Opel Mokka with 96 kW (130 hp) and manual transmission reaches a maximum speed of 202 km/h 2, with zero to 100 km/h acceleration in 9.2 seconds. Equally impressive is the 1.2 Turbo with 74 kW (100 hp). With a top speed of 182 km/h, it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in around eleven seconds.

74 kW (100 hp) entry-level engine is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. With the 100 kW (130 hp) 1.2, customers can choose from a six-speed manual or a smooth eight-speed automatic. Adaptive shift programmes and Quickshift-technology represent the state-of-the-art in the Mokka’s market segment. Drivers can shift gears themselves via the standard paddles at the steering wheel.

High-tech and high efficiency: 1.5 diesel

Two petrol engines are joined by a lively 1.5-litre diesel with six-speed manual transmission, producing 81 kW (110 hp) and maximum torque of 250 Nm (preliminary fuel consumption NEDC 1: combined 3.8 l/100km, 100 g/km CO2).

For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the diesel engine’s emissions reduction system – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. The NOx adsorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off.

Fans of electric-mobility can order the Opel Mokka-e. Ccommon Modular Platform (CMP) accommodates a variety of powertrains.

Leader in the segment: High-tech assistance systems and lighting technology

All-new Opel Mokka arrives in the B-segment with top innovations that until recently have only been available in the luxury class. Forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection operates at speeds above 5 km/h. If a vehicle or pedestrian ahead is approached too fast, the system sounds a warning chime and displays a message in the Driver Information Centre. If a collision is imminent, the braking system is prepared and, if necessary, emergency braking is deployed to minimise the effects of a potential collision. Below 30 km/h, system can bring the vehicle to a complete stop. If the speed exceeds 30 km/h, speed is reduced and the driver must actively brake.

Adaptive cruise control maintains a certain distance between the new Mokka and the vehicle ahead, using radar and camera sensors. Operative between 30 and 180 km/h. Vehicle speed increases or decreases to follow the vehicle ahead, but will not exceed the set speed. With automatic transmission, the system offers additional stop and go functionality. It can brake the car to a standstill and follow the vehicle ahead in traffic jams.

All-new Mokka underlines again that Opel is a leader in lighting technology. All variants are equipped with latest generation LED lamps – from daytime running lights in typical Opel graphics to headlamps and front fog lights. An absolute highlight in this segment is the adaptive IntelliLux LED Matrix light with a total of 14 elements. As with the Opel Insignia, Opel Astra and the new Opel Corsa, the lighting system enables driving on permanent high beam. In order to prevent glare for drivers of oncoming or preceding vehicles, the individual LED elements can switch off in milliseconds to cut vehicles out of the light cone – nobody is dazzled, yet Mokka passengers experience stadium-like illumination. In the rear, the choice for LED-only technology has allowed designers to go for very thin, stretched lights enhancing the feeling of precision and quality.

Excellent seating engineering is par excellence typical of Opel. Various six-way ergonomic seats are available, which are individually adjustable. Driver and front-seat passenger can place their smartphones in the storage tray provided in the centre console. Compatible telephones recharge here inductively (wireless). A formed rubber mat prevents the devices from sliding around.

New infotainment range perfectly networks and entertains Opel Mokka drivers and passengers. Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi systems with a 7-inch colour touchscreen and the top-of-the-line system Multimedia Navi Pro with a high-resolution 10-inch colour touchscreen are available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible multimedia systems feature integrated voice control. All-new Mokka also offers the OpelConnect service. Fast reactions, agility and dynamics are among the outstanding characteristics. Drivers can choose between three drive modes – Normal, Eco and Sport – for a good balance or the most fun, depending on their preferences. Electronically limited top speed is 150 km/h for preserving the energy stored in the 50 kWh battery and the range. A 100 kW DC fast-charging system allowing to charge 80% of the battery in just 30 minutes is standard equipment. Opel Mokka-e has a purely battery-electric range of up to 322 kilometres according to WLTP (1) in Normal mode, while the Eco mode supports the driver in achieving the maximum possible range. Whether wall box, high-speed charging or cable solution for the household socket: New Opel Mokka-e is ready for all charging options, from single-phase to three-phase at 11 kW. It also convinces with an eight-year warranty for the battery.

Customers can look forward to a very energetic, fun and agile new generation Opel Mokka. It will be on sale from late summer 2020 and available in dealerships from early 2021. Newcomer will also be offered with particularly efficient diesel and petrol engines.

Clear structure: New Opel brand face and cockpit design

In the second generation, Mokka’s name is again simply Mokka, just like at its debut in 2012. “Bold and pure is our consistent mantra”, says Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller. For the first time at Opel, the model name proudly spreads out in the centre of the rear panel, using a new, precisely chiselled techy font. When the first Opel Mokka was launched, it surprised with its compact dimensions and tough appearance. New Mokka is even more dense and robust, in a highly progressive way: extra efficient, pure and bold, with dramatically shorter overhangs (minus 61 mm in the front, minus 66 mm in the rear), 10 additional millimetres in width and a visually stretched silhouette for perfect proportions. Its compact size and general appearance make the 18-inch wheels look more impressively powerful than ever.

All-Mokka is also the first model to show Opel’s new, unmistakable brand front fascia: the Opel Vizor. Extending across the entire front of the vehicle below the bonnet, the Opel Vizor is an elegant module that horizontally frames brand features such as the latest-generation IntelliLux LED matrix headlights and the typical wing signature of the LED daytime running lights, proudly punctuated in its centre by the legendary Opel Blitz. Opel Vizor invented by the team around design chief Mark Adams will featured on all of the brand's models throughout the 2020s.

“Bold and pure, this is what the Opel design of the future will look like. All-new Opel Mokka shows athletic proportions combined with precisely structured, flowing surfaces. We have developed this philosophy aligned to characteristic German design, combining progressive bold design with purity”, explained Opel Design Vice President, Mark Adams.

This philosophy continues in the interior, where the anchor is the Pure Panel, which repeats the design intention of the Opel Vizor. Two wide screens of up to 10 and 12 inches in size welcome the occupants; the central display is deliberately tilted to the driver and the air vents are pushed to the background to enhance a focused experience. Pure Panel provides the latest technologies and most important information for the driver, while all irritating visual stimuli are absent. Design of the centre console too has been impressively cleaned up: thanks to the electric park brake as well as the new electric gear lever, no protruding element disturbs the purity of its design. All controls and modules are elegantly integrated.

Leader in the segment: Opel lighting technology and high-tech assistance systems

All-new Opel Mokka arrives in the B-segment with top innovations that until recently have only been available in the luxury class. Opel is a leader in lighting technology. All Mokka variants are equipped with latest generation LED lamps – from daytime running lights in typical Opel graphics to front fog lights. An absolute highlight in this segment is the adaptive IntelliLux LED Matrix light with a total of 14 elements. As with the Opel Insignia, Opel Astra and the new Opel Corsa, the lighting system enables driving on permanent high beam. In order to not glare their drivers, the individual LED elements can get off or deem down in milliseconds to “cut” oncoming vehicles or vehicles driving in front out of the light cone – nobody is dazzled yet Opel Mokka passengers experience stadium-like illumination.

Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi systems with a 7-inch colour touchscreen and the top-of-the-line system Multimedia Navi Pro with a high-resolution 10-inch colour touchscreen are available. If the airbags or seatbelt tensioners deploy in an accident, eCall contacts the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) automatically.

All-New Opel Mokka at the Test Center Rodgau-Dudenhofen in Germany

Dynamic, efficient and high quality: these are just a few of the development objectives of the all-new Opel Mokka. With typical precision, German engineers have been putting the finishing touches to the next-generation bestseller. At the Test Center Rodgau-Dudenhofen in Germany, they are currently setting up the new Mokka for optimum acoustic comfort in the interior, excellent driving safety at high speeds and Opel-typical steering and pedal feel. Since February, the Opel experts for chassis, powertrain, electronics and lighting have been using the Arctic winter for the tuning of chassis and assistance systems on frozen lakes and narrow country roads in Swedish Lapland.

Next Opel Mokka generation is a completely new design based on the company's highly efficient CMP multi-energy platform (Common Modular Platform). This modular kit offers maximum flexibility in vehicle development. CMP also allows the use of purely battery-electric drive as well as internal combustion engines. Customer has the choice. Thanks to the use of high-strength steels, the vehicle weight is low and the body stability is high. New Opel Mokka weighs up to 120 kilograms less than the previous model – with almost the same wheelbase and tyre sizes. With the electric Opel Mokka-e, batteries are installed deep in the vehicle floor, which lowers the centre of gravity and at the same time increases torsional rigidity by a further 30 % – excellent prerequisites for dynamic driving. Customers can look forward to a very agile second-generation Opel Mokka, which will be available in dealerships from early 2021. Until then, the testing continues at full speed.

Phase 1: Testing and fine-tuning at Arctic Circle

Opel engineer Gunnar Nees never tires of turning lap after lap on ice. He regularly stops for a few minutes. Reaches for the laptop, reads out measured values, logs every kilometre covered. In the vast Arctic wilderness, it is still freezing cold in March. Exactly the right conditions for orchestrating the harmony between ABS, ESP, assistance systems and the rest of the new Opel Mokka’s chassis.

Eevelopment cars are still hiding behind a green and black camouflage, with 3D-like graphics that blur the vehicle’s contours. Engineer behind the steering wheel has come to the far north to set up the chassis. Like every Opel, new Mokka must respond precisely to steering inputs and give good feedback, be comfortable and at the same time have a firm enough ride. An Opel must not display uncontrolled body movements, for example, when the vehicle is driving over a large bump at medium speed. Opel philosophy calls for safe and relaxing driving on the autobahn. An Opel must remain easily controllable in all situations and be fun to drive at the same time.

These characteristics must be present under all weather conditions everywhere – at the icy Arctic Circle as well as in high summer at the Mediterranean. However, nothing should change in terms of precise handling and consistently good-natured driving behaviour. Parts, components and systems are continuously fine-tuned by the Opel engineers: dampers, springs, steering. In addition, the control software is adapted: for ideal pedal feel when accelerating and braking, for the right amount of steering power assistance and for the interaction between all assistance systems.

Phase 2: High-speed driving on German test tracks

Back in Germany: same test engineer pilots Opel Mokka prototype on home ground at the Rodgau-Dudenhofen Test Center. Karsten Bohle, project coordinator for the second-generation Opel Mokka, joins Gunnar Nees.

“We are all looking forward to seeing New Opel Mokka on the road in customer hands. Test drives are running like clockwork, also because our new baby, with its low weight and compact external dimensions, reacts well to adjustments. Handling and comfort are super. New Opel Mokka is a joy to drive,” said Bohle, “the development work has been great fun.”

New Opel Mokka is ready to take its final exams at the Test Center. While shaken, ride comfort and interior acoustics must remain unstirred – not even by the torture track. Here, not far from the Opel headquarters in Rüsselsheim, the tracks are replicas of the trickiest road surfaces in Europe. Opel engineers have tested here for decades and built up a huge wealth of experience. Engineers repeatedly adjust springs and dampers, the balance between responsiveness and sporty precision continuously improved. New Opel Mokka features particularly low road noise for optimum acoustic comfort, which the high-quality materials in the interior further increase. Squeaks and rattles are taboo.

Steering and suspension get their Opel “feel” on the Dudenhofen handling course. Two tie rods at the McPherson strut turrets are standard equipment; they provide further stiffness at the front end, adding a touch more precision and agility. New Opel Mokka turns into corners eagerly, is easy to handle at the limit and the assistance systems function perfectly. Then comes the ultimate discipline – the high-speed oval with its steep banking, followed by the long straight. This test demands rock-solid stability at all speeds. In real life, it also results in a huge safety benefit when taking avoidance manoeuvres at lower speeds. Opel engineers only award their seal of approval for the autobahn when they return satisfied from the high-speed oval. New Opel Mokka has already passed this test with flying colours. However, testing, testing and yet more testing will continue until the summer. When New Opel Mokka has achieved production readiness, cars will start rolling off the assembly line at the end of the year.

All-New Opel Corsa GS Line

Sixth generation of the Opel Corsa is in the fast lane. Just a few days after the presentation of the battery-electric version, Opel is now announcing the Corsa with classic combustion engines – more efficient, more advanced and more dynamic than ever. Sales of the 4.06-metre-long, five-door small car from the German carmaker start with particularly economical petrol and diesel engines featuring power outputs ranging from 55 kW (75 hp) to 96 kW (130 hp). Moderate fuel consumption and an engaging drive are characteristic of all powertrain options (fuel consumption NEDC: urban 5.4-3.7 l/100km; extra-urban 4.1-2.9 l/100km; combined 4.6-3.2 l/100km, 105-85 g/km CO2; WLTP: combined 6.4-4.0 l/100 km, 144-104 g/km CO2, all figures preliminary).

“Reaction to the presentation of the all-electric Opel Corsa-e – an electric car for everyone –is phenomenal”, said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller. “Corsa with classic combustion engines will follow in its wheel tracks. Combustion engine or electric drive? At Opel, thanks to the multi-energy platform, both are possible in one model. Customer decides.”

Gearbox range is topped by the eight-speed automatic transmission. Sporty overall impression is underlined by the lightweight design and the low seating position of the driver. In addition, passive safety is at a high level, while Opel’s engineers have also finely tuned the chassis and the steering. All these qualities are already offered by the base version. Equally convincing are the advanced assistance systems, innovative infotainment and an excellent price-performance ratio. Corsa also makes a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission available for the first time in this segment. For this price, there has never been a more high-tech, dynamic Opel Corsa.

New Opel Corsa can be ordered as of July 1 in Germany. Entry-level variant is priced at €13,990 (RRP including VAT in Germany). This already includes numerous assistance systems, such as front collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection as standard. In addition to the all-electric Corsa-e, diesel and petrol versions are available in three new equipment lines: as Edition for €15,850 in Germany (RRP including VAT), Elegance and especially sporty GS Line are also available.

New engines: Ideal balance between efficiency and performance

Sixth-generation Corsa’s all-new engine portfolio aims to offer customers an ideal balance between efficiency and an engaging drive. Compared with the current power units, the new engines return significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions while retaining similar power outputs.

• Improvements begin straight away with the base 55 kW (75 hp) 1.2 – NEDC combined fuel consumption is 4.1 l/100km (preliminary fuel consumption NEDC1: urban 4.9-4.8 l/100km; extra-urban 3.7 l/100km; combined 4.1 l/100km, 94-93 g/km CO2; WLTP2: combined 6.1-5.3 l/100km, 136-119 g/km CO2). This is a substantial improvement in comparison to the current 1.2 model with 51kW/70hp and its NEDC combined consumption of 5.9-5.6 l/100km and 134-128g/km CO2.

• Higher performance is supplied by the award-winning, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbocharged engine family (Engine of the Year 2015-2018), also with 1.2-litres displacement. The all-aluminium engines produce 74kW (100hp) or 96kW (130hp). With the 74kW (100hp) engine, the new Corsa needs 4.4-4.2 l/100km NEDC combined (fuel consumption NEDC1: urban 5.3-5.1 l/100km, extra-urban 4.0-3.6 l/100km and combined 4.4-4.2 l/100km, 101-96 l/100km; and 6.4-5.3 l/100km, 137-121 g/km CO2 combined in the WLTP2 cycle, all figures preliminary). The 1.4-litre predecessor, also with 74kW (100hp) consumed 5.8-5.4 l/100km combined according to NEDC (WLTP: 6.7-6.5 l/100km, 151-146g/km CO2). Even with the most powerful 96kW (130hp) version, which has no equivalent in the current Corsa range, the preliminary fuel consumption and emissions figures remain moderate (NEDC1: urban 5-4 l/100km; extra-urban 4.1-4.0 l/100km; combined 4.6-4.5 l/100km, 105-103 g/km CO2; WLTP2: combined 6.4-5.6 l/100km, 144-127 g/km CO2).

Wide torque plateau for petrol engines: Top driveability

High efficiency and lively performance are characteristic of the new petrol engines. Internal friction and friction losses have been reduced to a minimum. The turbocharger also reacts immediately, with strong torque development already at low rpm. Maximum torque of the 74 kW (100 hp) 1.2 is 205 Nm; the top 96kW (130hp) unit even develops 230Nm. With the majority of maximum torque available in a wide band, both engines are notable for their high driveability. At least 95 per cent of maximum torque is developed between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm – in combination with the low vehicle weight, excellent aerodynamics and the optimised gear ratios, this enables very good driveability.

Improvement in efficiency through the engine range is reflected in the driving performance. While the new  Opel Corsa with 96 kW (130 hp) reaches a maximum speed of 208 km/h, its predecessor needed 15 per cent more power (110 kW / 150 hp) to get to 207 km/h. With zero to 100 km/h acceleration in 8.7 seconds, the new model is 0.2s quicker than its predecessor. Equally impressive is the 1.2 turbo with 74kW (100 hp). With a top speed of 188 km/h, it is 3.0 km/h faster than the similarly powered predecessor. Depending on the gearbox, it also accelerates from zero to 100km/h in around 10.0 seconds – 1.0s quicker (all figures preliminary).

In addition to the engines, the powertrain improvements also include the transmissions.

• 55 kW (75 hp) entry-level engine is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard.

• With the 74 kW (100 hp) unit, customers can choose from a six-speed manual or a smooth eight-speed automatic. Adaptive shift programmes and Quickshift-technology represent the state-of-the-art in the Corsa’s market segment. Drivers can shift gears themselves via the paddles at the steering wheel.

• Top-of-the-line, 96 kW (130 hp) 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo is always combined with the eight-speed automatic transmission.

High-tech and high efficiency:

Three petrol engines are joined by a lively 1.5-litre turbo diesel with 75 kW (102 hp) and maximum torque of 250 Nm (preliminary fuel consumption NEDC: urban 3.8-3.7 l/100km; extra-urban 3.0-2.9 l/100km; combined 3.3-3.2 l/100km, 87-85 g/km CO2; WLTP2: combined 4.6-4.0 l/100km, 122-104 g/km CO2, preliminary).

For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the emissions reduction system – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. NOx adsorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off.

Fans of electric-mobility, of course, can order the Corsa-e. Thanks to the common modular platform (CMP), various powertrains can be offered on one platform.

Lean: lightest variant weighs less than 1,000kg

In addition to the new Corsa’s lively engines, the lightweight design also contributes to the top driving dynamics. The lightest version of the next generation model even undercuts the magical 1,000-kilogramme mark. Excluding driver, the five-door weighs only 980kg. Compared with its predecessor, this model variant is a useful 108kg lighter. This is a weight-saving of around 10 per cent, although the new model has a similar length of 4.06 metres. The body-in-white is around 40kg lighter, the very compact three-cylinder engines weigh around 15kg less than the four-cylinder units of the previous generation. The aluminium bonnet also saves 2.4kg in comparison to the previous model’s smaller bonnet made of steel. The seats also have been put on a diet. The optimized seat structure saves another 10kg.

New Opel Corsa conveys dynamics through its sporty design – especially in combination with the two-tone paintwork. The roof line is coupé-like, 48 mm lower than the predecessor’s, without detriment to headroom for the driver and front passenger. The driver sits 28 mm lower. Handling and driving dynamics benefit from the lower centre of gravity. The handling is responsive and dynamic, for more fun behind the steering wheel.

Democratisation of technology: Advanced assistance systems and Matrix light

In the new Corsa, Opel offers technologies and assistance systems that customers otherwise only know from higher vehicle classes. A real highlight is the adaptive glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix light, which Opel is making widely available for the first time in the small car segment. Eight LED elements are controlled by a high-resolution front camera of the latest generation and automatically and continuously adapt the light beam to the respective traffic situation and surroundings.

State-of-the-art assistance systems such as traffic sign recognition or the radar-based automatic cruise control, as well as the sensor-controlled flank protection, offer a noticeable safety bonus. The latter warns if the sides of the car risk making contact with obstacles (e.g. posts, walls) during manoeuvres at less than 10km/h. There are also systems such as side blind-spot assist and various parking aids, from park pilot to 180-degree panorama rear view camera. Lane keep assist is also making its Corsa-debut. If the system detects an unintended lane-change it alerts the driver with a flashing signal and a nudge of corrective steering (more about the wide range of driver assistance systems of the new Corsa generation here).

Corsa drivers and passengers are well connected and entertained with the new range of infotainment systems comprising Multimedia Radio, Multimedia Navi with 7.0-inch colour touchscreen and the top-of-the-line Multimedia Navi Pro with 10.0-inch colour touch screen. In addition, the Corsa also offers the new telematics service "Opel Connect" as option. Live navigation with real-time traffic information and current fuel prices, plus a direct link to breakdown assistance and emergency calls make journeys even more relaxing for drivers and passengers.

Take your pick: Sporty Opel Corsa GS Line, comfortable Opel Corsa Elegance

New Opel Corsa is offered in four trim levels. Even the entry-level version has many technologies and comfort-enhancing extras, such as typical Opel features like steering wheel heating and heated leather seats with massage function for the driver. Assistance systems include, for example, front collision warning, intelligent cruise control, lane keep assist and speed sign recognition. Above the base version, three equipment lines with different emphases address different customer groups. Corsa Edition adds the most popular extras, the Corsa Elegance is trimmed for maximum comfort and the Corsa GS Line combines additional sporty features. Equipment philosophy, which Opel is presenting for the first time with the Corsa, will soon also be available for other Opel models.

In the Opel Corsa Elegance (from €17,850 in Germany, RRP including VAT), a six-way adjustable front passenger seat, armrest with storage compartment as well as LED headlights in typical Opel-look and LED fog lights make journeys even more relaxed. Chrome decor, attractive stitching and other details make the Elegance especially attractive.

Sporty ambitions of the GS Line as dynamic model variant are obvious – inside as well as out. Sport seats for driver and front passenger, as well as aluminium sport pedals, a black headliner and red décor on the instrument panel, underline the sporty feeling. GS Line can be recognized immediately by a chrome tailpipe and sporty looking bumpers at the front and rear. A Sport mode delivers even more dynamic steering and throttle response.
