Opel Grandland X: New Top-of-the-Line Petrol Powertrain Arrives

Deliveries of the cool Opel Grandland X with the most potent petrol powertrain in the line-up are now underway. The first example of the compact SUV with the state-of-the-art direct injection power unit is now in the hands of its happy owner. An excited Manuel Friedrich (36) of Ludwigshöhe picked up his brand new Grandland X at the Auto Jacob Opel dealership in Rüsselsheim. Patricia Princess of Erbach-Schönberg, Managing Director, Auto Jacob GmbH, and Sales Consultant, Georg Pelz presented Friedrich with the keys to his new car.

“I am thrilled with my new Opel Grandland X”, said Manuel Friedrich. “I have always wanted an SUV. It was love at first sight when I saw the Grandland X’s cool design and I placed my order as soon as the top-of-the-line engine became available.”


More than 140,000 customers have chosen the Opel Grandland X since sales began in summer 2017.



Manuel Friedrich’s Opel Grandland X is powered by the new 133 kW/180 hp 1.6-litre Direct Injection Turbo petrol engine with eight-speed automatic transmission (fuel consumption1, 2: 7.2-7.1 l/100 km urban, 5.0-4.9 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.8-5.7 l/100 km and 132-130 g/km CO2 combined).

The all-aluminium four-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder develops maximum torque of 250 Nm at only 1,750 rpm. The lively power unit, which is notable for its particularly direct throttle response, accelerates the Opel Grandland X from zero to 100 km/h in only 8.0 seconds and up to a maximum speed of 222 km/h.

The PureTech power unit not only delivers strong performance. Thanks to a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system that includes a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF), it also produces low emissions. Fuel economy and efficiency is further improved by the variable valve timing system, which enables infinite adjustment of valve timing and duration.



The Grandland X heads the “X-family” of Opel SUV models – which includes the Crossland X and the Mokka X – and is also leading the electrification of the brand’s model range. The order books for the Grandland X PHEV, Opel’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, will open in the first half of this year. Opel will launch a total of eight all-new or refreshed models between now and the end of 2020.

Groupe PSA’s passenger cars are all certified under the new EURO 6 requirements and are immediately available for customers.

  • All Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel and Vauxhall passenger cars are approved under the new EURO 6 emission standard effective on 1 September 2019: “EURO 6d-TEMP-EVAP-ISC”.
  • Thanks to sound technological choices made in anticipation of the regulations – SCR “Selective Catalytic Reduction” and GPF “Gasoline Particulate Filter” –, Groupe PSA is once again at the forefront for implementing the more stringent standards.




Nicolas Morel, Executive Vice President for Quality and Engineering at Groupe PSA, confirms: “Groupe PSA was one of the few carmakers ready last year for the first step of WLTP [1] and able to deliver all its range to its customers after 1 September 2018. One year on, Groupe PSA is on schedule again and has punctually type-approved all passenger car models in due time. Our technological choices to treat pollutant emissions allow us to offer our customers compliant and environmentally friendly vehicles.”


The targets for the measurement of passenger car emissions become tougher again on 1 September 2019, with the following additions:

  • Test for RDE (Real Driving Emissions): this test defines the admissible deviation between the polluting emissions (NOx, PN) measured on vehicles in real-world driving conditions and the emissions measured in the new certification procedure. The requirement is a coefficient of 2.1 for NOx emissions. Groupe PSA models are approved. Moreover, 80% of Groupe PSA passenger cars are already compliant with the next regulation step “EURO 6d-ISC” to be implemented in January 2020 with a required coefficient of 1+0.43 of measurement dispersion.

  • Test for EVAP (EVAPorative emissions): EVAP is the measurement of the amount of hydrocarbons that evaporates from a car’s fuel system over a period of 48 hours. This primarily concerns the fuel tank ventilation of petrol cars.

Test for ISC (In Service Conformity): ISC means that automobiles up to five years old and already on the road must continue to comply with all emissions standards.

These tests have already been completed for all passenger car models and the vehicles are certified accordingly. Customers can order all models from Groupe PSA’s brands (Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel and Vauxhall) today and can be sure that their new car already meets all current standards and can be delivered without delay.

Five Power Units Under 100g CO2: New Opel Astra Available to Order

New Opel Astra

New Opel Astra celebrates its public premiere at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (public days September 12-22). The five-door limousine (from €19,990, all prices RRP incl. VAT in Germany) and the Sports Tourer (from €20,990) are now available to order and come in the trim lines Edition, GS Line, Elegance, Ultimate and as the “120 Years” special model. This new Opel Astra is the most efficient ever with up to 21 per cent lower CO2 emissions than the predecessor. Five of the seven powertrain combinations on offer even undercut the magical 100 gram mark for CO2 emissions per kilometre driven (according to NEDC). With a completely new generation of engines and transmissions, the Opel Astra sets standards for low emissions, putting it at the top of the compact class.

Opel Astra’s ultra-modern three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines ensure lively driving performance and guarantee top driving comfort with minimum noise generation. A counter-rotating balance shaft in the block of the three-cylinder engines offsets vibrations. Base power units have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. A new stepless automatic (continuously variable) transmission and a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic also contribute to lower fuel consumption and higher comfort.

Meticulous development in the wind tunnel also made a significant contribution to the reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. At 0.26 Cd,  Sports Tourer belongs to the estate cars with the lowest drag coefficient in the world, while the five-door leads the hatchback class at 0.26 Cd. As a result, the new Opel Astra is one of the most aerodynamic compact cars on the market.

Opel Astra’s agile chassis has been further developed. New shock absorbers increase comfort. Optional dynamic chassis features stiffer dampers, a more direct steering and a Watts link at the rear axle.

Thanks to state-of-the-art emissions reduction technologies such as Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) and diesel Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), all the Astra’s new powertrains already meet the future Euro 6d emission standard. New all-aluminium engines are equipped as standard with fuel-saving stop/start technology. New Opel Astra also comes with many other top technologies, from the new front and rear view camera to the digital speedometer and the next generation of infotainment. e-Call emergency call system is also on board. A wireless charger in the centre console for smartphones is optionally available.

Efficiency champions: up to 21 percent lower CO2 emissions

New turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, which are as economical as they are lively, are primarily responsible for the exemplary efficiency.


Compact, three-cylinder, turbo petrol units are available with 1.2 and 1.4-litre displacements. With power outputs extending from 81 kW (110 hp) to 107 kW (145 hp) and maximum torque from 195 to 236 Newton metres, they achieve an excellent balance between performance and efficiency (NEDC1 fuel consumption: urban 6.4-5.2 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.2-3.8 l/100 km, combined 5.0-4.3 l/100 km, 116-99 g/km CO2; WLTP combined: 6.2-5.2, 142-119 g/km CO2; preliminary figures). New Opel Astra 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo is combined with a six-speed manual gearbox while Opel Astra 1.4 Direct Injection Turbo is available with stepless automatic transmission. Integration of the water-cooled exhaust manifold in the cylinder head contributes to quick engine warm-up, which lowers emissions after a cold start. All petrol engines feature variable valve timing and are up to six kilogrammes lighter than the previous three-cylinder units. 1.2 Turbo petrol engine with 96 kW (130 hp) emits around 21 percent less CO2 than the comparable predecessor model. Typical for Opel is the excellent transient throttle response of the petrol engines – at 1,500 rpm, 90 per cent of the maximum torque is already available within 1.5 seconds of flooring the accelerator.

New Opel Astra’s 1.5-litre diesel engines have the same positive characteristics. Reduced-friction, light-alloy engines feature a balance shaft and variable-geometry turbochargers. Common rail fuel injection system operates at up to 2,000 bar. High-tech three-cylinder units offer 77 kW (105 hp) to 90 kW (122 hp) and depending on power output 260 to 300 Nm of maximum torque (NEDC fuel consumption: urban 6.0-4.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.0-3.2 l/100 km, combined 4.7-3.6 l/100 km, 125-94 g/km CO2; WLTP2 combined: 5.6-4-4, 147-117 g/km CO2; preliminary figures).

Optimum exhaust after-treatment of the Opel Astra 1.5 diesel is delivered by the state-of-the-art emissions reduction system consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Opel Astra already offers a portfolio of state-of-the-art technologies and assistance systems that is unrivalled in this vehicle class – first and foremost the adaptive, glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix light. New Opel Astra is also available with optional extra energy-efficient LED headlamps that each consume only 13 watts in normal use. Extensive offer also includes systems such as adaptive cruise control, following distance indication, forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and lane keep assist, to name but a few. Also available are AGR-certified (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.) ergonomic seats – in fabric, Alcantara or premium leather trim – with ventilation and massage function. New Opel Astra is also highly digitalised with a new optional high-tech front camera as well as rear view camera.

New front camera is smaller and more powerful than before, thanks to a faster processor. It now not only detects vehicles, but also pedestrians – an important safety bonus. Digital rear view camera available in conjunction with the new Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment system is also more powerful. View of the traffic behind the vehicle on the monitor is more distinct and precise; the contrasts are more visible in the dark.

Opel Astra customers enjoy top connectivity with the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible systems Multimedia Radio, Multimedia Navi and Multimedia Navi Pro. They belong to the newest infotainment generation – smarter, faster and more intuitive. The top-of-the-line Multimedia Navi Pro – as in the Opel Insignia flagship – has an eight-inch colour touchscreen with a display choice in “Tour” or “Sport” mode. Multimedia Navi Pro can be individualised and also be operated by voice control. Connected Navigation services with real-time traffic information and online map updates make the journey more relaxed. Navigation display itself appears with redesigned symbols in a fresher, more modern look. Same applies to the instrument cluster: drivers in the new Opel Astra are the first to have a digital speedometer.

Driving pleasure: Wireless charging and Bose Sound System

Comfort is a top priority in the new Opel Astra. A practical feature when travelling: compatible smartphones can now also be charged inductively via wireless charging. All you have to do is insert your smartphone into the opening provided in the centre console.

New Opel Astra transforms into a concert hall with the optional Bose high-end sound system. A total of seven loudspeakers including a RichBass subwoofer under the boot ensure optimum listening pleasure. The driver and passengers are surrounded by a rich sound – regardless of where they are in the vehicle. In addition, up to eight different sound profiles can be stored via the digital amplifier – depending on the taste and preference of the music lover.

Last but not least, new Opel Astra introduces another comfort feature that makes driving in the cold season more pleasant and safer: heated windscreen. Fine, almost invisible wires in the windscreen ensure that Opel Astra drivers quickly have a clear view of the road on frosty days and that the windscreen no longer fogs up.

In great demand with the new Opel Asta Sports Tourer and still on offer: sensor-controlled tailgate that automatically opens and closes as soon as the driver moves his foot under the rear bumper with the key in his pocket.

New Opel Astra again sets standards in its class with these top technologies as well as with exemplary fuel consumption and CO2 values for both diesel and petrol engines.

All-purpose leisure activity vehicle is now available with a new top-of-the-line petrol engine combined with eight-speed automatic transmission and Start/Stop. The 96 kW (130 hp) 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo (NEDC [1] fuel consumption: urban 6.3-6.1 l/100km, extra-urban 5.1-4.9 l/100km, combined 5.6-5.3 l/100km, 127-121 g/km CO2) already meets the Euro 6d emission standard and joins the existing powertrain portfolio of petrol and diesel engines (NEDC [1] fuel consumption: urban 6.6-4.5 l/100km, extra-urban 5.1-4.0 l/100km, combined 5.7-4.2 l/100km, 130-110 g/km CO2). In addition to the top-of-the-line petrol engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission, standard features such as the six-stage adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support and armrest, heated leather steering wheel with steering wheel remote control, power windows in front and air conditioning increase comfort. With 96 kW (130 hp), the new 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo is the top-of-the-line power unit in the Opel Combo Life petrol engine portfolio. Lively three-cylinder engine already complies with the Euro 6d emission standard. It delivers 230 Nm of maximum torque at only 1,750 rpm and comes combined exclusively with the ultra-modern eight-speed automatic transmission. Together with the direct injection turbo engine, this not only enables particularly smooth gear changes, but also helps to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions. In order to reduce particulate emissions as much as possible, the engine features a close-coupled Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) for optimum regeneration (i.e. oxidisation of the particles that accumulate in the filter). In this engine-transmission combination, the Opel Combo Life reaches a maximum speed of 186 km/h and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 12.3 seconds.

But it is not only exemplary driving performance that makes the current Opel Combo generation so attractive. It was developed according to passenger car standards from the start – and not as a commercial vehicle to which features were added retrospectively to also appeal to families. Professionals and workers using the Combo Cargo panel van therefore benefit from the same safety, technology and comfort features as families and recreational athletes riding in the passenger car version. It is no surprise that the passenger car Opel Combo Life was voted "AUTOBEST Best Buy Car of Europe 2019" and the commercial vehicle variant Opel Combo Cargo "International Van of the Year 2019". They offer more car for the money, plus the highest level of safety and comfort in their respective segments. In addition, the Opel Combo offers drivers and passengers plenty of space and high flexibility – all with top comfort. Opel is offering a new top-of-the-line powertrain in the stylish Grandland X. The cool-looking sports utility vehicle (SUV) will receive a new turbocharged direct injection petrol engine, which is available with a seamless-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. The all-aluminium, PureTech power unit not only delivers strong performance, it also produces low emissions, thanks to a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system that includes a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF). Furthermore, premium ergonomic seats, leather trim, the Denon premium sound system and numerous ultra-modern assistance and infotainment systems promise a feel-good factor.

Opel Extends Petrol Engine Portfolio for Opel Insignia Flagship

Opel has already taken more than 155,000 orders for the Insignia and the brand is now adding the newest version of its 1.6-litre petrol direct injection turbo to the engine range of its flagship model – in combination with six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission. From now on, the 1.6 Direct Injection Turbo can be ordered on Insignia Grand Sport, Insignia Sports Tourer and Insignia Country Tourer (fuel consumption1 Grand Sport: 8.4-8.0 l/100 km urban, 5.6-5.3 l/100 km extra-urban, 6.6-6.3 l/100 km and 153-145 g/km CO2 combined; fuel consumption1 Sports Tourer: 8.6-8.3 l/100 km urban, 5.6-5.3 l/100 km extra-urban, 6.7-6.6 l/100 km and 154-151 g/km CO2 combined). Model variants with the automatic gearbox come with the extra comfort and adaptability of FlexRide as standard. The fuel consumption1 of the Insignia Country Tourer 1.6 Direct Injection Turbo is 8.6 l/100 km urban, 5.6 l/100 km extra-urban, 6.7 l/100 km and 156 g/km CO2 combined.



The lively four-cylinder engine produces peak power of 147 kW/200 hp at 5,500 rpm and develops 280 Nm of torque from 1,650-4,500 rpm. With six-speed manual or automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, the 1.6 Direct Injection Turbo can power the Insignia up to a maximum speed of 235 km/h and enable zero to 100 km/h acceleration in 7.7 seconds.

In order to reduce particulate emissions as much as possible, the 1.6 direct injection petrol engine features a close-coupled Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) for optimum regeneration (i.e. oxidisation of the particles that accumulate in the filter). Opel Insignia 1.6 Direct Injection Turbo thus meets the strict Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard, which includes Real Driving Emissions (RDE) measured on public roads and comes into force for all new registrations in September 2019.

Opel Insignia is extremely attractive for both private as well as fleet customers. Opel’s X-Family of Sport Utility Vehicles Heads Euro 6d-TEMP Initiative

Opel is leading the automotive industry in the implementation of Euro 6d-TEMP, which includes Real Driving Emissions (RDE) measured on public roads. The brand has already introduced 85 newly developed engines that meet the future European emissions standard. At the forefront of this initiative is the Opel X-family of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) comprising Crossland X, Grandland X and Mokka X.


With the transition to Euro 6d-TEMP, Opel Crossland X and the larger Opel Grandland X compact SUV bring a new generation of 1.5 Diesel engines to the Opel powertrain portfolio. Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of lightweight aluminium, while the four valves per cylinder are activated by dual overhead camshafts.

Opel Crossland X offers the 75 kW/102 hp version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engines with Start/Stop. With the manual six-speed transmission, fuel consumption[1] is 4.7 l/100 km urban, 3.5 l/100 km extra-urban, 4.0 l/100 km and 105 g/km CO2 combined. Maximum torque of 250 Nm is developed at only 1,750 rpm.

Opel Grandland X compact SUV features the 96 kW/130 hp variant of the 1.5 Diesel, with start/stop and a VGT turbocharger (Variable Geometry Turbine vanes). With a six-speed manual transmission, fuel consumption[1] is 4.7-4.7 urban l/100 km, 3.9-3.8 extra-urban l/100 km, 4.2-4.1 l/100 km and 110-108 g/km CO2 combined. Maximum torque of 300 Nm at developed at only 1,750 rpm.

Opel Grandland X 1.5 Turbo D is also available with an advanced eight-speed automatic transmission that not only offers seamless shifting, but also moderate fuel consumption and emissions[1] (4.5-4.4 urban l/100 km, 4.0-3.9 extra-urban l/100 km, 4.2-4.1 l/100 km and 109-108 g/km CO2 combined).



For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the emissions reduction system of the 1.5 Turbo Diesel – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx adsorber, AdBlue injector, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. The NOx adsorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off.



Thanks to the new 1.5-litre power unit and the existing 130 kW/177 hp 2.0 Diesel (fuel consumption urban 5.3-5.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.6-4.5 l/100 km, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km and 128-126 g/km CO2 combined), which shares the emissions reduction system of the 1.5 engine, Grandland X customers can choose from two powerful, yet very fuel efficient diesels.

The entry level version of the Opel Grandland X comes with the 96 kW/130 hp 1.2-litre Direct Injection Turbo PureTech petrol unit. The three-cylinder engine, which has won the International Engine of the Year award four times in a row, features a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) and is available with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. The SUV challenger can achieve a top speed of 188 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.1 seconds (fuel consumption manual[1]: 6.1 l/100 km urban, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.3-5.2 l/100 km and 121-120 g/km CO2 combined; fuel consumption automatic[1]: 6.1-6.0 l/100 km urban, 4.9-4.8 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.3-5.2 l/100 km and 121-119 g/km CO2 combined).

Opel Mokka X: All-turbo engine range starts with 120 hp 1.4 Turbo

For the Opel Mokka X, the transition to Euro 6d-TEMP brings a new, stronger, entry-level petrol power unit, meaning that the bestselling B-segment SUV is now powered exclusively by turbocharged engines. The 88 kW/120 hp 1.4 Turbo with start/stop (fuel consumption[1] urban 8.1-8.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.7-5.5 l/100 km, combined 6.6-6.4 l/100 km, 151-148 g/km CO2) drives the front wheels via a manual six-speed transmission and replaces the 85 kW/115 hp 1.6-litre, naturally aspirated predecessor.



Opel’s Euro 6d-TEMP rollout is part of the brand’s commitment to becoming a leader in the reduction of vehicle emissions. The next steps in the journey are the introduction of four electrified models by 2020, including the next generation Corsa, which will also be available as a fully electric vehicle, and the Opel Grandland X plug-in hybrid. By 2024 Opel will become a fully electrified passenger car brand, offering an electric version of every model – as a hybrid or a battery electric vehicle – alongside those powered by internal combustion engines.

WLTP driving cycle: More realistic fuel consumption data

The Euro 6d-TEMP initiative from Opel coincides with the introduction of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) for measuring fuel consumption and emissions, which applies to all new car registrations as of this September.

Like the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the WLTP is a laboratory test, but while the NEDC determines “urban, extra-urban and combined” values based on a theoretical driving profile, the WLTP uses “real” driving profiles drawn from a global statistical survey. The WLTP driving cycle is divided into four parts with different average speeds: low, medium, high and extra high. Each part contains a variety of driving phases, stops, acceleration and braking that represent everyday driving profiles.

Each engine/transmission combination of a certain vehicle type is tested with the most economical as well as the most fuel-intensive vehicle equipment. The data obtained is comparable worldwide, while NEDC values are only valid for Europe.

Real Driving Emissions: Measurements on the road as well as in the laboratory

When the transition to WLTP began in September 2017, the Euro 6c emissions standard also became a legal requirement for the type-approval of new vehicle types. Types that meet the standard by passing the Real Driving Emissions test (RDE) are type approved according to Euro 6d-TEMP. RDE complements the WLTP and measures the pollutants from cars while driven on public roads, Euro 6c becomes a legal requirement for all newly registered vehicles this September, while Euro 6d-TEMP will apply to all new registrations as of September 2019.

Euro 6d-TEMP has a NOx conformity factor of 2.1, which is the maximum margin of error by which cars are allowed to exceed the NOx limit in real world driving – measured in the RDE test. Euro 6d-TEMP will be superseded by Euro 6d with a NOx conformity factor of 1 (plus an error-margin of 0.5) in January 2020 for new types and from January 2021 for new registrations.
