ALL-NEW Opel 2.0 CDTI: New Generation Large Diesel Debuts in Paris

Opel power: New generation, 125 kW/170 hp 2.0 CDTI for Insignia and Zafira Tourer 
High power, high torque, low fuel economy and emissions, all delivered with class-leading refinement: Opel’s new-generation, 2.0 liter Turbo diesel ticks every important box. Making its debut in the Insignia and Zafira Tourer MPV at “Mondial de l’Automobile 2014” in Paris (October 4 - 19), this state-of-the-art engine is another major step in the roll-out of Opel’s new powertrain portfolio.

Packing 125 kW/170 hp and substantial torque of 400 Nm, it will replace the current 120 kW/ 163 hp 2.0 CDTI engine at the top of Opel’s diesel range. This highly efficient, Euro 6 compliant engine delivers almost five percent more horsepower and 14 percent more torque while reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Just as important, the engine is also impressively quiet and smooth as a result of Opel’s unwavering focus on ‘sound engineering’ measures to minimize NVH (noise, vibration, harshness).

Available next year, the new 2.0 CDTI is the first in a new family of large diesel engines developed in-house by a global team of engineers in Turin and Rüsselsheim supported by engineers in North America. It will be manufactured at Opel’s Kaiserslautern engine plant in Germany.

Power density up: Fuel costs and emissions down

Extracting as much energy from as little fuel as possible is key to both power and frugality, and with an exceptional specific output of 85 hp per liter – the same power density as Opel’s new-generation 1.6 CDTI – this engine is big on fun-to-drive but small in its impact on customers’ wallets. Impressive torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, and maximum power of 125 kW/170 hp is accessed at just 3,750 rpm.

Key elements in the performance of the engine are the newly-designed combustion chamber, the re-profiled intake ports and the new fuel injection system with 2,000 bar and up to 10 injections per cylinder cycle. This ensures high power, improved fuel atomization and also contributes to quieter running. The definition of the combustion chamber alone was the subject of more than 80 computer design simulations, before the best five were finally selected for hardware development.

The VGT (variable geometry turbocharger) features an electrical actuator for the variable aspect turbine, giving a 20 percent faster boost response than a vacuum actuator. Exceptionally compact packaging of the VGT and intercooler also minimizes the air volume between the turbocharger and engine, further contributing to a fast boost pressure build up. For durability, the turbocharger is water-cooled and has an oil filter fitted at the oil inlet point to help further reduce wear in the bearing system.

The VGT and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) module have been designed as a single system for optimal efficiency. The EGR module is based around a new stainless steel radiator concept which provides a near 90 percent cooling efficiency. An integrated, water-cooled EGR bypass valve minimizes pressure drop and its closed loop control offers a significant improvement in NOx/PM trade-off under transient driving conditions, while improving the management of HC and CO emissions.

Smooth running: Diesel power with turbine-like refinement

A consistent improvement in NVH characteristics under all operating conditions was a key requirement for the new engine right from the outset of its design. Several CAE acoustic optimization loops were executed on each component and sub-system even before the first prototype engines were built.

Architectural improvements focused on two high noise emitting areas: the top and bottom of the engine. A new aluminum cylinder head design, including the addition of a decoupled, plastic cam cover with isolated fixings and a sealing gasket, improves noise attenuation. And the intake manifold is also wrapped in a single shell cover made of sound-absorbing material.

At the bottom of the engine, a new balancer shaft module is fitted, made of high pressure die-cast aluminum. It houses two counter-rotating shafts which offset up to 83 percent of secondary order engine vibrations. A helical gear on the crankshaft drives one of the balancer shafts, which is geared to drive the other shaft. Scissor gear control ensures smooth gear teeth meshing, and the elimination of a drive chain removes the risk of rattle noise. After detailed analysis, plain instead of roller bearings were preferred for the balancer shafts to further reduce NVH, as well as weight.

The design of the oil pan is also new. The previous single piece solution is now replaced by a two piece design, with a lower sheet metal pan fixed to an upper section in high pressure, die-cast aluminum. NVH performance was further improved by several analysis loops to acoustically optimize the internal and external ribs of both sections.

Other detailed sound engineering measures to reduce operating noise include:

optimized fuel injection patterns for reduced combustion noise without compromising fuel economy; acoustically-designed ribs in the cast iron cylinder block; individual balancing of the VGT compressor and turbine wheels; improved teeth-meshing on the timing belt and decoupled mounting points for its cover.

As a result of all these design features, the new engine emits less noise than its predecessor throughout its operating range, and is five decibels quieter at idle.

Clean running with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

The new 2.0 CDTI runs as clean as a gasoline engine with Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which assures compliance with Euro 6 emissions standards. 

BlueInjection is an after-treatment which removes nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the engine’s exhaust gases. Tiny quantities of AdBlue®, a harmless fluid consisting of urea and water, are injected into the exhaust gas flow ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH3), which is absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the passing exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to harmless nitrogen and water vapor in a chemical reaction with the ammonia.

The AdBlue solution, available at filling stations and Opel dealerships, is stored in a tank, which can be topped up as required via a nozzle adjacent to the vehicle’s fuel filler cap.

Another economical choice for the Zafira Tourer: the versatile Opel seven-seater is now available in a second 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX version with a power output of 88 kW/120 hp. This joins the 100 kW/136 hp turbo diesel which made its debut in the compact van last year. Both are members of Opel’s new diesel generation and distinguished by exceptionally economical fuel consumption with first-class running smoothness as well as minimal noise generation, which has prompted the motoring press to hail Opel’s 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX engine as the “whisper diesel”. It is part of Opel’s large model and engine offensive, which will see 27 new models and 17 new engines introduced between 2014 and 2018. The new base version of the Zafira Tourer diesel is now on sale for a very attractive 26,850 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

A clear focus on minimizing engine noise, vibration and harshness characterized the engine’s entire concept, design and development process. This resulted in a very quiet and silky smooth engine operation. Advanced CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) simulation tools and several optimization loops were used to assess the noise character of each component and sub-system before the first prototype engine was even built. The success of this work is proven by the engine’s best-in-class performance for low noise and vibration.

The new engine generation is also first class in other areas: it has been further optimized in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Zafira Tourer with the 88 kW/120 hp 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX comes with Start/Stop fitted as standard, and is also available with a low-friction six-speed manual transmission and a braking energy recuperation system. To ensure optimum electrical energy management, this system recovers a part of the kinetic energy via the generator in engine overrun mode, converting this to electrical energy and feeding it into the battery. This happens automatically whenever the driver takes his/her foot off the accelerator pedal or presses the brake pedal. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the generator output is greatly reduced and electrical components are powered in a fuel-saving manner by the buffered electrical energy. This means the engine is not required to drive the generator when accelerating, which helps reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This cyclical process would overload a conventional battery when repeated over time, so a high-performance, Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery is fitted in the Zafira Tourer. It provides maximum reliability in the electrical system and ensures the engine will always start without delay at any time. The AGM battery’s glass mat fleece absorbs electrolyte liquid, giving a high density which reduces internal resistance, improves cold-start characteristics and increases the battery’s service life.

Thanks to these ultra-modern technologies, the new Zafira Tourer whisper diesel is not only extremely quiet and comfortable to drive. It also offers significantly reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, consuming just 4.5 l/100 km in the combined cycle with emissions of only 119 g/km CO2. This frugality has earned the seven-seat Zafira Tourer an ‘A’ energy efficiency label in Germany.

Opel’s new diesel generation: Powerful, economical, environmentally-friendly

Both output versions (120 and 136 hp) of the Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI comply with future Euro 6 emission standards. Engineers have achieved this by incorporating Opel’s BlueInjection selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which makes these diesels as clean as a gasoline engine in terms of emissions. In this environmentally-friendly, exhaust after-treatment process, a harmless fluid called AdBlue®, consisting of urea and water, is injected into the exhaust gas. The solution decomposes into ammonia, which is stored in a catalyst substrate. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) entering the catalyst in the exhaust gas is then selectively reduced to nitrogen and water. In this way, nitrogen oxides can be reduced by 60 to 80 percent.

The 1.6 CDTI engine’s cylinder block, crankshaft bedplate and cylinder head are all made from aluminum, saving more than 20 kilograms in weight. Fuel injector nozzle pressures of 2,000 bar, a 25 percent increase over previous engine generations, enable up to 10 injection pulses per cylinder cycle. This ensures high power, improved fuel atomization and efficient mixing with the air intake charge.



The two new generation ultra-efficient whisper-quiet 1.6 CDTI engines now complete a wide portfolio of diesel units for the Zafira Tourer. The spectrum of choice includes Opel’s familiar 2.0-liter diesel, with 81 kW/110 hp, 96 kW/130 hp or 121 kW/165 hp, as well as the top-of-the-range version which delivers143 kW/195 hp and 400 Nm maximum torque. The gasoline portfolio comprises an 85 kW/115 hp 1.8-liter engine and variants of a 1.4-liter Turbo with 88 kW/120 hp or 103 kW/140 hp, as well as a 125 kW/170 hp version of the 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo. The most powerful gasoline engine in the Zafira Tourer range is the 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo with 147 kW/200 hp – both versions of the direct-injection gasoline turbo unit are part of Opel’s all-new engine generation.

Customers who seek even more economical and environmentally-friendly driving can choose a 103 kW/140 hp, 1.4 LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) ecoFLEX model or the 1.6 CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) ecoFLEX variant with 110 kW/150 hp.

Opel Astra family, Zafira Tourer MPV and Cascada convertible
The Opel Astra family, the Zafira Tourer MPV and the midsize class convertible Cascada are the first models, the first ancestor with the new engines and transmissions of the great offensive drive from Opel. By 2016, the automaker replaced 80 percent of its total power portfolio. With three all-new engine family - consisting of 13 different units - and keep gearboxes many new cutting-edge technology and class-leading performance levels in a wide range of Opel models collection.

We start with the new 1.6-liter turbo engines, the first copies of a completely new generation of medium-sized petrol and diesel engines. The downsizing engines exactly fit the requirements of the customers: they are characterized by high performance and strong traction at reduced fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions. How to reach a power density as well as a level of comfort and balance that catapult them to the top of their class.

The new 125 kW/170 hp 1.6 Turbo SIDI (SIDI = Spark Ignition Direct Injection) provides a torque of 280 Newton meters - twelve percent more than its nearest competitor. The turbo gasoline direct-injection engine is already available for Astra (GTC, five-door hatchback, saloon and Sports Tourer), Zafira Tourer and the new convertible Cascada. The new 1.6 CDTI, the first all-aluminum diesel engine from Opel, shines with unmatched in this displacement class output per liter of 85 hp. The 100 kW/136 hp engine starts in the current Zafira Tourer, successively followed by other Opel models. Both engines are combined with the next generation of manual gearbox that qualify in particular in terms of shift comfort ahead of the competition.

Top class: The all-new 1.6 SIDI Turbo petrol engine 
The all-new four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with direct injection starts first with an output of 125 kW/170 hp. It offers an exceptional torque of up to 280 Newton meters at low engine speed range from 1,650 min-1 and is designed to model elasticity and excellent driving comfort, particularly low fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions.

Compared to the same great predecessors fuel thirst and CO2 emissions in the combined cycle were reduced by up to 15 percent and torque are both increased by 22 percent. The Result: The engine puts power in the class of compact cars of 150 to 180 hp the bar higher: It provides twelve percent more torque than the nearest competitor - Models German premium manufacturer included.

Crucial for the impressive performance, the introduction of direct injection for improved combustion, spontaneously responding turbochargers for heavy pulling even at low engine speeds, as well as numerous sound-engineering measures that favor a particularly calm and balanced handling.

The best example of the enormous torque of the new 1.6 SIDI Turbo Astra five-door hatchback and sedan sprint in just 8.8 seconds in fifth gear from 80 to 120 km / h - a whopping almost two seconds faster than the 1.6-liter predecessors. Equipped with Start / Stop and six-speed manual require both Astra variants in the combined cycle (according to Regulation [EC] No. 715/2007) only 5.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to 139 grams of CO2 per kilometer - an improvement 14 percent. And the Astra GTC is rotating at a reduction of 15 per cent once more on the efficiency screw.

The first all-aluminum diesel engine of Opel Zafira Tourer celebrates premiere. By and by the new 1.6 CDTI engines then replaced with the current 1.7 liter engine capacity and weaker two-liter turbo diesel in most model ranges, as follows additional power levels. Opel engineers assume that consumption levels of less than 4.0 l/100 km and CO2 emissions / km, and below are possible with this engine in smaller vehicles to 100 g. In terms of pollutant emissions, the new 1.6 CDTI (selective catalytic reduction) is as clean as a gasoline thanks to Blue Injection SCR system - it already meets the future Euro 6 emission standard, which comes into force in September 2015.

Opel presents four world premieres at this year’s Geneva Motor Show (public visitor days March 7 – 17, 2013). The new mid-size class Cascada convertible, the urban crossover concept ADAM ROCKS, the rallye concept ADAM R2 and the Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI will all be revealed at the Opel press conference on March 5 at 9:00 a.m. in Geneva Palexpo, Hall 2, Stand 2231.

With the elegant four seat Cascada convertible, Opel now offers an attractive and affordable alternative in a segment dominated by higher priced midsize cabrios. With muscular proportions and an open-air feeling, the crossover concept ADAM ROCKS previews possible design routes to an absolutely unique and even more individual car, while the ADAM R2 variant, bound for international customer rallyeing this year, also joins the small car’s star cast. A key part of the comprehensive update to Opel’s engine portfolio is the launch of a new family of mid-size diesel engines. The new generation 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC makes its debut in Geneva in the compact Zafira Tourer van. The urban lifestyle ADAM, Opel’s individualization champion and best connected small car, made waves before and during its market launch. Now it is sure to turn more heads at Geneva as the ADAM continues to increase its technological advantage with new IntelliLink functions, such as Siri Eyes Free voice recognition and apps like TuneIn for global radio streaming.

World premiere: New Opel Cascada – Glamorous all season midsize convertible
The new Opel Cascada is a classy four seater with an elongated silhouette and a sophisticated, high quality soft-top. Positioned at the top of Opel’s product line-up, the Cascada is a mid-size convertible that’s distinguished not only by its size (length: almost 4.70 meters), but also by its allure and the many premium technologies and features it offers.


It delivers a sharp driving experience with a super rigid body, advanced HiPerStrut front suspension and adaptive mechatronic FlexRide chassis system. All occupants can enjoy the pleasures of open-air driving thanks to the premium quality soft-top which opens at the touch of a button in 17 seconds while driving at speeds of up to 50 km/h. It can also be activated by remote control when the car is stationary.


With its outstanding load capacity of up to 380 liters (top closed), the all-season convertible shows that glamour and everyday practicality are perfectly compatible. To increase load volume, the Opel Cascada benefits from the FlexFold system which electrically releases and folds down the 50:50 split rear seat-back rests – a feature that cannot be offered in hard-top convertibles.


True premium equipment such as automatic seatbelt presenters, exclusive Nappa leather upholstery and ventilated ergonomic seats, as well as a host of safety systems, enhance interior comfort and provide greater safety for relaxed driving pleasure. Even with a very rich standard equipment, Cascada prices are highly attractive and start at 25,945 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany). The new Opel Cascada will arrive at dealerships in April.

World premiere: Opel ADAM ROCKS Concept – Freedom in its most individual form
The lifestyle Opel ADAM is the true champion of individualization – and the best connected small car around. But that is not enough for Opel. At the Geneva Motor Show, the automaker reveals it is exploring new ways of further enhancing ADAM’s individualization with a three door, urban mini-crossover study called ADAM ROCKS. With its muscular proportions, fierce design and an open-air capability, the 3.7 meter long ADAM ROCKS opens the door to a new market segment.

The ADAM ROCKS concept has been created for those seeking personal freedom “off the beaten track”. Inspired by parkour athletes, it features a higher and wider stance as well as an especially powerful, compact appearance. Its assertive looks, with a prominent grille structure and LED headlamps, show this car means business. Boomerang shaped turn indicators make the ADAM ROCKS’ styling even more individual, and the clips on the concept’s large, 18 inch wheels get a particularly expressive design.

The ADAM ROCKS’ special feeling of personal freedom is further emphasized by its cabrio looks and a fabric roof that offers a clear view of the sky above. The fabric extends across the entire width of the roof right back to the C pillars. The ‘networked’ roof’s special appeal is its intelligence: a special weather app, displayed on the color touch screen of the IntelliLink driver-information-center, knows when a weather front is imminent and automatically initiates closing of the roof. This ADAM rocks!

World premiere: Opel ADAM Rallye R2 – ADAM UNCHAINED
Opel officially returned to motorsport with the ADAM “Cup” in November 2012. At this year’s Geneva Motor Show the brand now presents a new Rallye Cup variant of its small lifestyle car, built based on FIA R2 regulations. Special body components from the sporty Opel OPC product line and quick release catches on the hood and tailgate, as well as under ride guards front and rear, emphasize the sporty format of this rallye specialist.

Its unique shell also harbors pure high-tech. The ADAM R2 is powered by a 1.6 liter ECOTEC 16V engine with variable camshaft phasing that develops around 136 kW/185 hp and maximum torque of about 190 Nm in its competitive configuration. The adjustable chassis set-up with asphalt and gravel settings guarantees maximum traction and dynamic handling. And excellent stopping power is provided by a braking system with a hydraulic ‘fly-off’ handbrake, Brembo 4 piston front brake calipers and braking pressure regulation for the rear axle.

The R2’s cabin features all the attributes of a professional competition vehicle. Equipment includes an integrated safety structure, HANS-compatible SPARCO Competition racing seats, a cockpit with an LCD gear indicator, control light and MONIT trip computer, a central control panel, a map reading light and an electric fire extinguisher. After its homologation, the ADAM R2 will be a top-class vehicle for international customer rallyeing, eligible for every national championship in Europe.

World premiere: New Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI – Highest turbo diesel efficiency


Opel introduces the 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC, the cleanest diesel engine in the company’s history, in the Zafira Tourer at the Geneva Motor Show. Equipped with Opel BlueInjection SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology, this new generation four cylinder turbo diesel already meets future stringent Euro 6 emissions limits.


In the Opel Zafira Tourer, the new generation 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC unit delivers 100 kW/136 hp and 320 Nm of torque, together with outstanding combined cycle fuel efficiency of just 4.1 l/100 km and very low emission levels of only 109 g/km CO2. No other compact monocab on the market place offers such a great combination of high torque and performance (with a maximum speed of 193 km/h) and fuel economy. 

The new 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC does not only set benchmarks for performance with its high power and torque density but also for refinement with an outstandingly low level of noise, vibration and harshness. This new generation engine and its innovative engine control unit have been entirely developed in-house by a global team of engineers in Turin, Rüsselsheim and the USA.

At the Geneva Motorshow (March 7-17, 2013) Opel will introduce its all-new generation diesel engine, the 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC, in the Zafira Tourer. This new powertrain is the cleanest diesel engine in Opel’s history. Equipped with Opel’s “BlueInjectionSCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction), it already meets the strict Euro 6 emissions limits. The new generation 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC unit delivers 100 kW/136 hp and 320 Nm of torque for outstanding fuel efficiency in the Zafira Tourer of just 4.1 l/100 km consumption and 109 g/km CO2. No other compact monocab on the market place offers such a great combination of high torque, performance (with a maximum speed of 193 km/h) and fuel economy. The new Opel four cylinder 1.6 liter diesel engine does not only set benchmarks for performance with its high power and torque density but also for refinement with an outstandingly low level of noise, vibration and harshness.

The new 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC diesel and its innovative engine control unit have been entirely developed in-house by a global team of engineers in Turin, Rüsselsheim and the USA. It further expands the Zafira Tourer’s broad powertrain offer. This comprises five diesel – including a new high performance 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI engine with 143 kW/195 hp - and four gasoline engines, as well as an LPG and a CNG Turbo variant. The extensive choice ensures that a wide range of customer needs and tastes are met. “Opel continues to spice up its already successful Zafira Tourer with new and exciting German-engineered technology,” says Mike Ableson, Opel Board Member and GM Europe Vice President, Engineering. “Our new generation 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC unit is not only the cleanest diesel engine in Opel’s history. It just makes our Zafira Tourer stand out once again: There simply is no other car that offers such a perfect blend of high performance, impressive fuel economy, excellent refinement and top class quality in a seven seat layout.”

The award-winning Opel Zafira Tourer – most recently a recipient of the 2012 ‘Golden Steering Wheel’ from readers of European car magazines – combines premium class ambience and leading flexibility inside the cabin with cutting-edge technologies, some of which are unique in the segment and enhance safety and comfort. Technical highlights include the mechatronic FlexRide chassis system, the second generation Opel Eye front camera, the AFL+ adaptive forward lighting system and a panoramic windshield which floods the cabin with natural light. Extra flexibility inside the Zafira Tourer is provided by the new generation Flex7 system, including the unique lounge seating function which gives passengers an unprecedented amount of space in the second row.

1.6 CDTI ECOTEC has class leading refinement, performance and environmental compatibility  
Featuring closed loop combustion control and an aluminum block, the all-new 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC diesel engine starting in the Zafira Tourer at the Geneva Motor Show will replace existing 1.7 liter engines and certain lower powered versions of the 2.0 liter range. Class leading attenuation of noise, vibration and harshness, high power/torque density and low fuel consumption were the main development objectives. Initially maximum power and torque have been set at 100 kW/136 hp and 320 Newton meters respectively; compared to the 1.7 liter engine of the older generation, these are increases of respectively 4.6 and 6.6 per cent. Compared to similarly powerful 2.0 liter diesels in the Zafira Tourer, the fuel consumption of new generation 1.6 CDTI has been reduced by up to 10 percent.

The Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI’s moderate fuel consumption and extremely low emissions – comparable to those of the gasoline engine version – are made possible by the use of Opel’s “BlueInjectionSelective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.


In this environmentally friendly exhaust after treatment process a harmless diesel exhaust fluid named AdBlue®, consisting of urea and water, is injected into the exhaust gas. The solution decomposes into ammonia, which is then stored on a catalyst substrate. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) enters the catalyst in the exhaust gas, and is then selectively reduced to nitrogen and water.

Outstanding balance between performance and fuel economy
The new Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI which will be launched in 2013 is expected to be particularly popular in many markets where its super-low CO2 emission level of only 109 g/km will make it benefit from a favorable taxation system, e.g. in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Its outstanding balance of fuel economy and performance should also make it very successful in further major diesel markets like Portugal, Spain.
