Opel Continues Growth Momentum: New Registrations, Market Share and Electric Vehicle Sales Increase in the First Half-Year

  • On track for global growth: Opel and Vauxhall sell around 313,000 vehicles in the first half of 2026
  • Europe gains momentum: Passenger car sales rise by 11.8 percent
  • Strong performance in Germany: Passenger car registrations are up by 15 percent
  • Successful models driving demand: Corsa remains number one, SUV family grows by more than 37 percent

Opel continued its positive growth momentum in the first half of 2026. From January to June, Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall sold around 313,000 vehicles worldwide. The passenger car business in particular showed strong growth, with sales rising by more than 7 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Business also developed positively across Europe. In the Enlarged Europe region, Opel and Vauxhall sold around 231,000 passenger cars in the first half of the year, increasing sales by 11.8 percent compared with the same period last year. The market share rose to over 3 percent.

In particular, Opel’s latest generation of models is proving highly popular with customers. Demand for the SUV family comprising Grandland, Frontera and Mokka remains strong, with sales increasing by over 37 percent compared to the previous year globally. The new Vauxhall Frontera is also confirming its successful market launch: In the British B-SUV segment, the model has already reached second place. The all-electric variant is setting the benchmark in its class and has conquered the leading position among electric B-SUVs with a market share of around 16 percent.

Alongside the SUV range, the Opel Corsa remains one of the key success drivers for the German manufacturer. In the United Kingdom, the Vauxhall Corsa continues to lead in the B-hatch segment with a market share of more than 13 percent. In Germany, the Opel Corsa stays the clear number one among small cars. With a segment share of 17.2 percent, it further strengthened its leading position and gained an additional 1.1 percentage points compared with the previous year.

"In the first half of the year, we managed to continue growing despite a challenging market environment. With attractive vehicles, a consistent electrification approach and a strong presence in our core markets, we are continuing to gain market share. The development of our new SUV models and the ongoing success story of the Corsa are particularly pleasing. This gives us strong momentum as we enter the second half of the year," said Florian Huettl, CEO Opel and Vauxhall.

Opel delivered a particularly strong performance in its home market of Germany. With an increase of 15 percent in new passenger car registrations compared with the previous year, the German manufacturer continued its growth momentum in the first half of the year and achieved a market share of 5 percent among passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. At the same time, the success of the Astra Sports Tourer Electric underlines the strength of the current product portfolio: the model continues to hold the leading position in its segment among mainstream manufacturers.

Opel Increases Global Sales in the First Quarter of 2026 – Double-Digit Growth in Europe

  • Worldwide growth: New registrations increase by almost 8% in the first quarter
  • Strong in Europe: Passenger car sales in Europe up almost 18% year-on-year
  • Continued strength: Corsa remains best-selling small car in Germany and the UK
  • Convincing SUVs: Opel Grandland, Frontera and Mokka with double-digit increase

Opel grew worldwide significantly in the first quarter of 2026. From January to March, Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall sold more than 157,000 cars and light commercial vehicles. That is almost 8%  more than in the previous year.

Growth drivers included the SUV models Mokka, Frontera and Grandland newly launched in 2025. The trio recorded double-digit growth compared to the first quarter of 2025. The new Frontera, for example, is also very successful as an electric vehicle. In the United Kingdom (UK) it is the best-selling all-electric B-SUV in the first quarter of the year, in Spain it ranks fourth and, in the Netherlands, it ranks fifth.

Meanwhile, demand for the Opel Corsa, Germany's best-selling small car for over five years, remains high and is even increasing. Sales of the bestseller were up by 25% in Germany in March. It thus remains the undisputed number one among small cars in Opel’s home market in the first quarter. The same is true in the United Kingdom, while the Corsa is number two in the Netherlands and number three in Portugal, Belgium and Turkey.

"All these figures clearly show that Opel is on a clear road to success. Furthermore, the new Astra has recently started rolling off the production line at our main plant in Rüsselsheim. Our designers and engineers have done an excellent job. The car will convince customers and give us additional drive. I am convinced: 2026 will be a good year for Opel," said Florian Huettl, CEO Opel and Vauxhall.

Passenger car sales in Europe developed particularly positively. From January to March, Opel and Vauxhall sold more than 115,000 passenger cars in the EU29 region. That is 18% more than a year ago. The market share rose by 0.4 percentage points to 3.3%. Also remarkable: In almost all markets, new registrations were higher than in the first quarter of 2025.

Things went particularly well in Opel's home market of Germany. Almost 33,600 new passenger car registrations in the first quarter represent an increase of 39% compared to the same period last year. The market share was up by 1.2 percentage points to 4.8%. In March alone, 13,700 Opel passenger cars were newly registered – that was an impressive 43% more than in the same month of 2025.

Easter Egg Hunt - Opel Way: Find Sharks in All-New Opel Grandland

  • Dive into depths of New Opel Grandland: Several sharks hide in new top SUV
  • Iconic idea: Shark tradition at Opel began around 20 years ago with a boy's brainwave
  • Attention to detail: Designers fill Opel's pure and bold design philosophy with life
  • To be continued: Small sharks also in new Opel Frontera and further models

Many families are already to go on an Easter egg hunt together. But why should it always be the classic Easter nests in the garden or chocolate bunnies that provide surprises? Opel has a completely different, even more exciting and above all ‘weatherproof’ suggestion – and those familiar with the brand will guess what it is: Why not dive into the depths of an Opel model and keep an eye out for well-hidden little sharks? Miniature predators have been delighting drivers and passengers alike for almost 20 years now – and continue to do so in all-new Opel Grandland.

New top SUV from Opel offers plenty of everything: innovative technologies such as the adaptive, glare-free IntelliLux HD light, maximum comfort with Intelli-Seats as standard, clever solutions such as the translucent Pixel Box in the centre console and many other surprises such as the cute sharks – which appear in whole swarms in some places on the latest ‘Golden Steering Wheel’ winner 1. But you will need to do a bit of detective work to find out exactly where, as the sea dwellers are shy by nature.

They can hardly be seen at first glance; instead, one lid has to be opened, another tray turned or the surroundings of the wirelessly charging smartphone viewed from a completely new perspective. Electrified in every variant and produced with many recycled materials, the Grandland also conserves resources in line with Opel's ‘Greenovation’ approach and thus ensures that the iconic sharks feel even more at home in the vehicle.

“The sharks have become iconic among the community. And they show the attention our designers pay to even the smallest detail,” said Design Director Karim Giordimaina. “Many customers are already looking forward to searching for the sharks when they buy their next Opel model. So, the playful sharks are also proof of how we inspire enthusiasm and emotions with our vehicles, on a large as well as on a small scale.”

Iconic brainwave: Opel sharks story began in 2004

Thus, it is no wonder that the miniature sharks have been making their way into every new model for many years. But how come that they were allowed to become a regular feature in Opel cars at all? A brief look back: One Sunday afternoon in 2004, designer Dietmar Finger was at home working on a sketch for the Corsa D which was to be launched two years later. He was designing the ordinary outer panel of the glove box, which is mostly invisible because it is hidden by the closed passenger door. However, when the glove box is opened, this panel must ensure stability – which it does with ribs integrated in the plastic surface. Finger was designing the ribs when his son looked at the sketch and said, “Why don’t you just draw a shark?” “Why not!” thought the designer and gave the ribs their characteristic shape! The next day, he showed the shark profile to Niels Loeb and the then Corsa Chief Designer was immediately sold on the idea. The shark in the glove box went into series production and the ‘Opel sharks story’ began.

Next came Opel Zafira, where Karim Giordimaina, then in charge of the interior design, hid three sharks in the compact van’s cockpit. Further permanent ‘shark appearances’ followed, first in the Opel ADAM and subsequently in all other car models up to the current generation Astra and Astra Sports Tourer as well as the new Grandland, where several tiny sea creatures are hidden in various places.

This has created an iconic ritual. Since the mid-2000s, every interior chief designer has made sure that at the end of the development process of a new model they have at least one shark somewhere in the interior. The exact locations always remain secret, even from top management. The fish therefore often stay hidden until the launch, which makes for an interesting search for shark lovers both inside and outside the company.

Consequently, the ‘Opel sharks story’ continues. Customers will soon be able to go on a shark hunt with the whole family in the new Opel Frontera. And in future Opel vehicles, too, the mini predators will be making their rounds, sometimes more, sometimes less hidden. Depending on the model, they may well change their territory in the depths of the interior and bodywork. So it remains exciting for customers to see where and how many sharks they will discover in their new Opel model.

Opel Continues Growth on German Home Market in 2024

  • Almost 175,000 new registrations in Germany – market share of 5.6%
  • Light commercial vehicle sales up by 40%

Opel achieved strong results in Germany last year in a challenging economic environment: According to preliminary internal figures, almost 175,000 cars and light commercial vehicles of the brand with the Blitz were registered over the course of the last 12 months. This represents an increase of 6.4% compared to 2023. The market share increased to 5.6% (2023: 5.3% ).

Opel light commercial vehicles were an important driver of growth. With more than 26,000 units of the Combo, Vivaro and Movano sold, the 2023 results were exceeded by an impressive 40%. The market share in the light commercial vehicle segment was up significantly by more than two percentage points to 9.1%. In addition, Opel also increased its passenger car sales last year. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 147,833 new registrations ensured a passenger car market share of 5.2 % (2023: 5.1%).

“We achieved very good results on our important German home market in 2024. This was primarily due to our attractive portfolio of light commercial vehicles and our bestselling Astra. This confirms our course and gives us further tailwind for a confident start to 2025 – with the new Mokka, the new family-friendly Frontera and the Grandland, our new top-of-the-line SUV,” said Patrick Dinger, head of Opel Germany.

  • Eyecatcher: Rugged interpretation of Opel design philosophy
  • Space aplenty: Up to 1,594 litres of luggage space, seven-seater option also available
  • Simplified offer: Two drivetrain concepts, two trims, two optional packages

After recently celebrating the world premiere of the new Frontera Electric and the new Frontera Hybrid in Istanbul (Türkiye), Opel has today opened the order books and revealed the prices for the family-friendly newcomer. Customers can call the new five-seater Frontera Electric their own from prices starting at €28,990 (all prices RRP in Germany) while the new Frontera Hybrid is available from €23,900. But that is not all. New Opel Frontera also offers the choice between five and seven seats. The two additional seats for the Hybrid only cost an additional €800 making the newcomer a perfect shuttle for family and friends.

“Our new Opel Frontera offers great packaging and value for money. The rugged interpretation of our bold and pure design philosophy combined with the highly competitive prices for the all-electric or electrified version will delight customers. This newcomer shows our ambition to further democratise electromobility,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.

Robust appearance and numerous practical features as standard

Striking design of the new Opel Frontera makes it stand out immediately. Opel Frontera is the first production model to proudly bear the new Opel Blitz emblem in the centre of Opel Vizor brand fascia. Prominent wheel arches and sills as well as the eye-catching C-pillar design underline the robust character.

Modern looks with a focus on the essentials continue seamlessly in the interior. The driver and passengers look at a cockpit with a newly designed steering wheel and two optional 10-inch widescreens.

Alternatively, Opel Frontera also offers the innovative Smartphone Station, which enables customers to utilise the power of their own smartphone as the infotainment system.

Suitability for both short journeys as well as long trips is a top priority for new Opel Frontera. At the front, the driver and front passenger can, if desired, sit on the new patented IntelliSeat with a slot in the middle that relieves pressure on the tailbone. 460 litres of luggage can be stored in the boot; with the seats folded down even up to 1,594 litres. Additional versatility is provided by the 60:40 split of the rear bench while a second load floor comes as standard. Furthermore, customers who need to take even more luggage can choose the optional functional roof rails.

Simplicity is key: Two drivetrain concepts, two trims, two optional packages

Intuitive, accessible and focused on the essentials: Opel meets these requirements in every respect with the new Frontera – from the choice of drivetrain to the equipment options and the ordering process.

New Opel Frontera is available either as a hybrid with 48-volt technology or fully electric. At a starting price of €23,900, the Frontera Hybrid has a 74 kW (100 hp) 1.2-litre petrol turbo engine developed specifically for hybrid use. This operates in combination with a 21 kW (28 hp) electric motor and an electrified six-speed dual clutch transmission, so that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are significantly lower compared to a conventionally powered model. In addition, Opel Frontera Hybrid is also available with a 100 kW (136 hp) 1.2 turbo engine for prices starting at €25,700.

Customers in Germany who want to travel locally emissions-free can order the battery-electric Frontera Electric with a range of up to 305 kilometres (according to WLTP 2) for €28,990. As a “Long Range” version, the new Opel Frontera Electric will be able to travel up to around 400 kilometres (WLTP 2) without stopping to charge.

Regardless of which drivetrain the customer chooses, they can look forward to a high level of driving pleasure thanks to the specific chassis set-up. The engineers in Rüsselsheim paid close attention to optimising body control and delivering Opel typical driving characteristics – even when travelling at higher speeds on the German Autobahn.

Frontera's equipment trims are equally clearly laid out for customers. The newcomer is available either as the Frontera Edition or as the Frontera GS. Even the entry-level version is extensively equipped. The GS variant will also have standard features such as multimedia infotainment with a 10-inch colour touchscreen and integrated navigation as well as a rear-view camera. Frontera customers can further customise their vehicle with two optional packages (“Comfort” and “Tech”) to ensure that the newcomer meets their personal preferences.

[2] Range values determined according to WLTP test procedure methodology (R (EC) No. 715/2007, R (EU) No. 2017/1151). Actual range can vary under everyday conditions and depends on various factors, in particular on personal driving style, route characteristics, outside temperature, use of heating and air conditioning and thermal preconditioning.

All-New Opel Frontera: Spacious and Fun SUV Also Available Fully Electric

  • Customers’ choice: Battery-electric version or efficient 48-volt hybrid drives
  • Rugged interpretation: Expressive silhouette, Opel Vizor with new Blitz, pronounced wheel arches
  • Interior delights: Dual widescreen displays, special ergonomic feature for front seats, clever storage solutions
  • Space aplenty: Up to 1,600 litres of luggage space, optional functional roof rails
  • Clever solutions: Wireless charging and phone projection, additional USB ports and more

Opel is sounding in the start of a new chapter in the company’s long and successful history: today the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker revealed the first images of the new Opel Frontera. The fun and spacious new SUV with the Blitz will be available as a battery-electric variant from the very start with customers also being able to opt for variants with 48-volt hybrid technology.

“With its combination of rugged design, spaciousness, clever solutions and efficient drivetrains, our new Opel Frontera will appeal to a wide range of customers who want to stand out from the crowd. It is ideally suited to the urban and sub-urban environment while simultaneously offering a recharging experience to our customers,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.

New Opel Frontera already delights at first sight with its rugged interpretation of Opel’s bold and pure design philosophy. Upright front silhouette and unique front proportions of the new Frontera combine a functional and spacious cabin volume with a very bold and tough, but modern expressive look. New Opel “Blitz” emblem celebrates its premiere on a series model and sits proudly at the centre of Opel Vizor. Bblack “Vizor” gives the front of Opel Frontera a unique identity and seamlessly integrates Eco LED headlamps with automatic high beam, and central Opel Blitz. Vizor is supported by a trapezoidal cooling opening in lower third and emphasises solid and robust stance of the car. Well-known Opel “wing signature” shines in a modern interpretation with three lighting blocks being separated by body-coloured insets. Side view reveals a distinctive C-pillar, which visually splits the spacious cabin. Elsewhere, the pronounced wheel arches and fenders plant the car firmly on the road while also giving the newcomer a solid and modern look.

Smartphone station, Intelli-Seat: Smart solutions for connectivity and comfort

Modern look and feel continues in the interior where clever design meets practicality. Wide horizontal decors on the instrument panel and doors visually widen the already airy cabin. Furthermore, the Opel typical fully digital Pure Panel cockpit with two 10-inch displays and Multimedia infotainment system awaits occupants and is just as eye-catching as the bold and elegant new steering wheel. Opel consistently follows philosophy of maximum comfort with minimum distraction, with a clean, detoxed user experience to avoid any form of digital stress.

Newcomer also caters for those who prefer to rely on their own mobile device by offering an optional innovative smartphone station. After connecting to the station via a dedicated app, the user’s smartphone becomes the vehicle’s infotainment control panel, also interacting with the steering wheel buttons. And Opel is once again bringing seating innovations to a wide range of customers in the new Frontera. Patented Intelli-Seat feature in front seats – a slot that relieves the pressure on the tailbone – ensures outstanding comfort even during long journeys on the Autobahn. In addition, seats are not only richly crafted and sculpted but are also eye-catching thanks to contrast stitching. Seat fabrics are also available in a fully sustainable recycled material.

Fun factor of newcomer is further increased by a string of smart solutions. For example, charging mobile devices is easier than ever before with a cooled wireless charger and two USB ports available in front and a further two USB ports available in the second row. Larger devices that would normally not fit into the cabin properly, such as tablets, can be safely stored in the centre console thanks to a flexible strap that holds them in place. Further open storage areas in the cabin can take daily carry-ons with rubber lining preventing rattling and sliding. Second row passengers can take advantage of integrated smartphone pockets in back rests of the front seats.

Spacious, efficient and clever: Ideal companion for a sustainable active lifestyle

In addition, new Opel Frontera impresses with its loading capacity. With back seats up, it already offers over 460 litres of luggage space in boot – with the seats folded down, the capacity increases to up to 1,600 litres. Additional versatility is provided by the 60:40 split of rear bench while a second load floor comes as standard. Furthermore, customers who need to take even more luggage on their journeys or want to take full advantage of the roof load of more than 200 kilogrammes can choose the optional functional roof rails.

Like all new Opel models, new Frontera not only impresses with its bold and pure design, but also with its responsible performance. Customers will be able to choose between a purely battery electric variant and highly efficient drives with 48-volt hybrid technology. Regardless of which drivetrain the customer chooses, they can look forward to a high level of driving pleasure thanks to the specific chassis set-up. Engineers in Rüsselsheim paid close attention to optimising body control and delivering Opel typical driving characteristics – even when travelling at high speeds on German Autobahn.

With its expressive new look, its clever and fun solutions along with an easy choice of fully electric or hybrid drives, new Opel Frontera once again shows that German brand takes its electrification pledge seriously while simultaneously catering to a wide range of customers.
