All-Wheel Drive Towing Power with the Opel Grandland Electric AWD

  • For caravans, sports and leisure equipment: Up to 1,350 kilogrammes towing capacity
  • For a gripping driving experience: 509 Nm torque, 239 kW (325 hp) system output, 0-100 km/h in 6.1 s, four drive modes
  • For a flexible and comfortable journey: Space for up to five people, up to 1,580 litres load volume, up to 502 km locally emissions-free range (WLTP 2)
  • Electric All In: Opel makes the switch to electric mobility easy

For all those who want to go on holiday in their own mobile home and to travel fully electric, the Opel Grandland Electric AWD (All-Wheel Drive) is the ideal companion. The first battery-electric Opel with all-wheel drive not only offers locally emissions-free driving pleasure – it also ensures that the whole family, along with their luggage and a caravan, can enjoy the best weeks of the year whenever and wherever they like. This is because the well-equipped Opel Grandland Electric AWD is powerful in every respect – its torque of up to 509 Newton metres is just as impressive as its towing capacity of up to 1,350 kilogrammes 1.

Caravans specifically designed for electric vehicles are particularly well-suited to this purpose. Manufacturers such as Fendt are currently developing new models whose lightweight, compact and aerodynamically optimised design is tailored to the requirements of electric towing vehicles. The Opel Grandland Electric AWD and a modern caravan therefore make an ideal combination for a resource-saving holiday trip to and from the campsite of choice.

Towing machine: Electric all-wheel drive SUV takes up to 1,350 kg on the hook

The always electrified Opel Grandland promises maximum travelling comfort for up to five people in every variant. The Intelli-Seats for driver and front passenger, certified by Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V., top infotainment with up to 16-inch colour touchscreen and the transparent Pixel Box in the centre console for wireless smartphone charging are just a few examples of the clever solutions that make every journey in Opel's top-of-the-line SUV more pleasant and relaxed. The  Grandland Electric AWD also has at least 485 litres of cargo space in the rear for transporting four-legged family members and luggage. If the 40:20:40 split rear seat bench is folded down, the capacity increases to up to 1,580 litres. Additionally, Opel offers plenty of practical accessories for bicycles and the like.

If holidaymakers do not want to be tied to one place but prefer to spend the night in their own caravan, the Opel Grandland Electric AWD makes this very easy: The trailer coupling is fit in just a few seconds – even without any additional tools. All this leaves it to attach the caravan and set off. This is possible because the new Opel Grandland Electric AWD can tow additional loads weighing up to 1,350 kilogrammes 1. The same applies, of course, to sports and leisure equipment such as boats or jet skis, which can easily be taken to the seaside or a lake using a trailer.

Stable, safe, comfortable: Four drive modes, frequency selective damping chassis

Maximum driving comfort and safety are the top priorities for the Opel Grandland Electric AWD, even when fully loaded and towing a trailer. On the one hand, this is ensured by ESP with TSM function (trailer anti-oscillation system), which actively prevents the trailer from swaying during the journey. On the other hand, two further components promise safe driving pleasure that is always tailored to the situation in the electric all-wheel drive vehicle, which boasts a total system output of 239 kW (325 hp).

Opel Grandland Electric AWD drivers have the choice of four driving modes: ‘Normal’, ‘Eco’, ‘Sport’ and ‘4WD’. While in ‘4WD’ both electric motors of the all-wheel drive vehicle run continuously and distribute the power evenly to all four wheels to ensure optimum grip – especially on slippery surfaces – in ‘Sport’, the steering and accelerator pedal respond even more directly thanks to a special setting. Peak power and torque are available in both modes. With up to 509 Newton metres, the latter ensures that the Opel Grandland Electric AWD always gets off to a powerful and brisk start.

But that is not all: the chassis of the battery-electric top model also features Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology as standard. Depending on the situation, road surface conditions and driving style, the unique chassis technology enables different damping characteristics for comfortable gliding at high frequencies – i.e. with short impacts such as on cobblestones – as well as for a sporty, ambitious driving style with more direct contact with the road at low frequencies. The Opel Grandland Electric AWD thus reacts even more immediately and directly to any command from the driver and, as is typical for Opel, remains stable when braking, cornering and at high speeds on the Autobahn. This is another plus point that makes driving with a caravan even more relaxed and safe.

And the all-electric all-wheel SUV is also durable for locally emissions-free holiday trips: The Opel Grandland Electric AWD can travel up to 502 kilometres (WLTP 2) without charging stop. Its 73 kWh lithium-ion NMC battery (usable capacity) needs around 30 minutes5 to recharge from 20% to 80% at a public fast-charger. And when the trailer is uncoupled at the destination, the all-wheel drive vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds.

Electric All In: E-services included for affordable electromobility

And to give electric mobility a further boost, Opel is making it even easier and more attractive for customers – starting with the purchase of a vehicle. After all, anyone who buys a battery-electric car model such as the Opel Grandland AWD Ultimate will receive numerous services at the same time with ‘Electric All In’3. For example, services such as an eProWallbox Move for fast charging at home, e-routes functions and eight years of mobile charging and breakdown assistance6 as well as a battery warranty are already included.

Long-Distance Champion: All-New Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid

  • Fully charged and refuelled: New top-of-line SUV covers 1,115 kilometres
  • ‘Electro’ SUV: In test, GS trim plug-in hybrid covers 380 kilometres locally emissions-free without recharging thanks to recuperation
  • Ideal for fleets and individuals: Drivetrain perfect for anyone who commutes fully electrically and wants to cover long distances in a particularly resource-efficient way

All-new Opel Grandland impresses with its attractive styling, groundbreaking technologies, clever solutions, lots of space and completely electrified range of drivetrains. ‘Golden Steering Wheel 2024’2 winner is available as fully electric Opel Grandland Electric, Opel Grandland Hybrid with 48-volt technology and powerful Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid. Team around Opel Grandland chief engineer Dirk Kaminski has now put the clever plug-in hybrid drive concept to test – with astonishing results that will impress company car and long-distance drivers.

“WLTP values 3 are clear: According to the official test cycle, our new Grandland Plug-in Hybrid offers a combined range of up to 897 kilometres, of which up to 87 kilometres are purely electric,” said Dirk Kaminski. “But we thought to ourselves: Let’s see what the car can really do. Our new top-of-the-range SUV will definitely break 1,000-kilometre mark with a full tank and a full charge. After all, Opel Grandland is 'made in Germany' through and through and rolls off assembly line in ultra-modern Eisenach factory. So we put it to test – under conditions that are worse than in official test cycle.”

From full to empty: 1,115 kilometres covered under adverse conditions

While WLTP values are determined at temperatures of around 23 degrees Celsius, all-new Grandland Plug-in Hybrid set off on a windy and rainy January morning at a fresh 11 degrees Celsius. And – appropriate for the season – on 19-inch winter tyres instead of summer tyres with lower rolling resistance and in the fully-equipped GS trim. Only requirement was: “SUV has a full tank and the 17.9 kWh battery is fully charged. Now we drive until the fuel tank and battery are empty.”

Plug-in hybrid completed typical commuter routes from Rhine-Main area around Rüsselsheim and Frankfurt to Rhine-Neckar area and back again. Routes included motorway stretches with free-flowing traffic, with stop-and-go traffic and rush-hour traffic, as well as country roads and city traffic including traffic light stops – a real-life test that reflects the true everyday requirements of many company car drivers.

Result or the distance that Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid, which delivers 143 kW (195 hp) system output and 350 Newton meters of maximum torque, achieved with just one tank filling and battery charge, exceeded the expectations of the Opel team: at an average speed of 80 km/h and a highly efficient overall average consumption of 4.6 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, SUV covered a total of 1,115 kilometres in four stages (interrupted by breaks to meet the legal requirements to adhere to driving times). Of this, the plug-in hybrid drove a little more than a third of the total distance, or more precisely 380 kilometres, purely battery-electric and therefore locally emissions-free.

Opel Grandland chief engineer - Dirk Kaminski

“Fact that Grandland achieves such outstanding values under these circumstances – at the end of the test temperatures had dropped to just 4 degrees Celsius – has once again confirmed that we have created a car that is groundbreaking in every respect with a drive concept that is completely suitable for everyday use. Highly efficient combustion engine and the electric motor work in perfect harmony,” said Kaminski. “More than that: every time you decelerate, powertrain switches to electric operation. This is possible because the recuperated energy is used to power the car electrically meaning that long distances can be covered at low and medium speeds with no local emissions.”

‘Greenovation’ à la Opel: Resource-saving SUV and drive concept

All-new Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid therefore shines as the ideal choice for fully electric commuter routes as well as for long-distance company car and leisure drivers who want to be particularly resource-efficient and leave range anxiety behind. Not only the use of recycled materials and the absence of chrome show what Opel means by ‘Greenovation’ and sustainability in new top-of-line SUV. This is also impressively demonstrated by results of  test.

Numerous other qualities of completely new Opel Grandland make daily business trips as well as long journeys even more pleasant: ergonomic seats certified by Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. (AGR) ensure relaxed driving pleasure. Patented Intelli-Seat ergonomic feature is standard on all front seats. And with technologies such as glare-free IntelliLux HD light, Intelli-HUD head-up display or illuminated, translucent Pixel Box, Opel Grandland drivers are perfectly equipped.

At the end of the test, one final question remains: What distance would all-new Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid be able to cover with a full tank and full battery under ideal test conditions – for example, in early summer? “Insights that we as a team have gained from the 1,115 kilometres we have now driven is: Under optimal conditions, even more would certainly be possible,” said Dirk Kaminski.

All-new Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid with 143 kW (195 hp) system output, 350 Nm of maximum torque and a top speed of 220 km/h can be ordered from prices starting at €40,150 (RRP including VAT in Germany).
