After the success of the Opel Corsa YES, customers who want to stand out from the crowd even more can now also do so with their very special Opel Mokka. With this, Opel is adding further flavour to the Mokka range after already introducing the highly dynamic top-of-the-line Mokka GSE.

Like its Corsa counterpart, the new Opel Mokka YES also relies on strong colours and attractive series extras. The special edition is recognisable at first glance thanks to the unusual Koral Orange paint finish. The interior design is specially matched to the unmistakable colour. The decors around the instrument panel, the seat inserts as well as the stitching in seats and doors also shine in radiant orange. On the outside, the standard black 17-inch alloy wheels, the black roof and the matching lower front, side and rear areas, as well as the optional black bonnet, provide a characteristic contrast and an independent appearance. Those who prefer to set accents with a different paint finish, can alternatively choose from the colour palette of the GS line with a matching interior.

Comfort in the Opel Mokka YES is increased by standard additional features such as the six-way adjustable front seats and the armrest between driver and front passenger. All the necessary information is provided by the 10-inch driver information display and the 10-inch multimedia infotainment system’s colour touchscreen. Smartphones can be connected wirelessly via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Parking and manoeuvring in the city is made easier by the reversing camera, which is also standard. Privacy and protection from sunlight in the rear are provided by the dark-tinted rear windows.

In addition, various packages are on offer that further enhance the new Opel Mokka YES. While the tech packages include features such as front parking assist or adaptive cruise control, the infotainment package has integrated navigation with over-the-air updates, natural voice recognition and wireless charger. The comfort package offers, among other things, a double load floor and the winter package features heated front seats and steering wheel.

Opel Mokka YES customers can choose from three drivetrains. The locally emissions-free Opel Mokka Electric YES offers 115 kW (156 hp) and the hybrid version comes with 107 kW (145 hp) and electrified six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Alternatively, a classic 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 100 kW (136 hp) is also available.

Opel Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid: Efficient Allrounder for Job and Family

The compact class bestseller recently demonstrated its outstanding efficiency by covering more than 1,200 kilometres under real traffic conditions – without refuelling! Now, the long-distance hero ‘made in Germany’ can be seen at the IAA Mobility in Munich. From today, trade visitors can take a closer look at it at the Opel Booth B20 in Hall B3 of the IAA Summit.

Efficiency and long-distance wonder: 1,200 kilometres at 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres

A system output of 107 kW (145 hp) and a fuel tank volume of 52 litres – these were the prerequisites that the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid had for its long-distance test. Then the Opel test drivers set off on a route of about 106 kilometres in the Rhine-Main area, starting and ending in Rüsselsheim. The result after more than 11 laps, which the compact estate completed over two days on motorways as well as on country roads and small village streets, heading through the rush hours and stop-and-go traffic, was astonishing: Opel Astra Sports Tourer had driven more than 1,200 kilometres without refuelling, with an average fuel consumption of just 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres and around 345 kilometres covered purely electrically thanks to its 48-volt hybrid technology, all at an average speed of 61 km/h, typical for everyday driving.

However, it did not stop at internal testing, and so the editorial team of the TV magazine VOX auto mobil independently checked whether the Opel Astra Sports Tourer could repeat such an extraordinary performance. And yes – it could! The TV testers drove the estate from Munich to Sylt, averaging around 17 km/h faster than Opel’s internal tests and covering a total of 1,154 kilometres – also on just one tank of fuel! This makes the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid a real long-distance hero.

For everyone’s needs: Full choice of powertrains

But it is not just as a hybrid with 48-volt technology that the Opel Astra Sports Tourer really comes into its own. Customers have the full choice, because the current Astra generation offers a variety of powertrains like no other model in the Opel portfolio. Battery-electric, as a new plug-in hybrid, as a hybrid with 48-volt technology or with a highly efficient combustion engine – Astra Sports Tourer drivers can choose the efficient alternative that best suits their requirements and lifestyle without having to compromise.

Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric is the perfect example for this. The battery-electric compact class bestseller accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds, and it can reach a top speed of 170 km/h. Driver and passengers in the Astra Sports Tourer Electric can travel up to 413 kilometres (according to WLTP2) locally emissions-free without stopping, and choose from the three drive modes Eco, Normal and Sport. Even when the battery-electric Astra needs to be recharged, this only means a short ‘pit stop’ at a charging point. The all-electric car can be charged to 80 per cent of the battery capacity in around 30 minutes at a 100 kW direct current fast charging station.

Comfortable all-rounder with extra space: Up to 1,634 litres of loading capacity

Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric also shows that it is a real all-rounder that combines sporty styling with locally emissions-free driving with its load volume: Even with the rear seats up, the luggage compartment of the compact class estate offers 516 litres of cargo volume – with the seats folded down, the capacity of the all-electric car increases to up to 1,553 litres. And as a hybrid or with a combustion engine, the variable rear compartment of the Opel Astra Sports Tourer offers even up to 1,634 litres of storage space. Thus, not only numerous suitcases and work utensils, but also more voluminous items such as transport boxes can be comfortably accommodated, pleasantly easy to load via the 60-centimetre-low loading sill.

The entire journey in the Opel Astra Sports Tourer is just as pleasant as accessing the boot – according to the motto: Take a seat, enjoy the drive and get out again after hours in a relaxed manner. This is ensured by ten-way adjustable ergonomic active sports seats with electro-pneumatic lumbar support, massage function, seat ventilation and heating for the driver and front passenger. Elsewhere, the optional electric glass sunroof creates a light and airy atmosphere with the best views of the sky, even from the second row. And in darkness or adverse weather conditions, Astra Sports Tourer drivers can have a relaxed journey thanks to the glare-free IntelliLux Pixel light. Finally, the ten-inch colour touchscreen or voice-activated multimedia navigation system ensures drivers to arrive at their destination without detours, while their own compatible smartphone can be charged wirelessly in the centre console.

Smooth Operator: Opel Astra with Efficient Stepless Transmission

With the launch of the new Astra, Opel took the car industry by surprise by introducing a state-of-the-art stepless transmission on the Astra hatchback and estate. The typical smooth power delivery and high efficiency of the stepless transmission is a perfect match for the new generation of the award-winning Opel Astra (European Car Of The Year 2016). In combination with the 107 kW (145 hp) 1.4-litre, Direct Injection Turbo petrol engine (NEDC fuel consumption1: 6.3 l/100km urban, 4.3-4.2 l/100km extra-urban, 5.1-5.0 l/100km and 116-114 g/km CO2 combined), the stepless transmission (aka Continuously Variable Transmission or CVT) brings a refined, frugal and lively power unit to the brand’s powertrain portfolio. With a completely new generation of engines and transmissions, the Opel Astra sets standards for low emissions, putting it at the top of the compact class. This new Astra is the most efficient ever with up to 21 per cent lower CO2 emissions than the predecessor. Five of the seven powertrain combinations on offer even undercut the magical 100 gram mark for CO2 emissions per kilometre driven (NEDC 1).


Smart operating principle: Two pulleys and chain belt instead of gears and clutches

Peter Naumann, Global Program Manager and acting Chief Engineer Automatic Transmissions in Rüsselsheim, explains how stepless transmissions work: “Operating principle is smart and simple. In contrast to a traditional torque converter automatic transmission that has planetary gears, clutches and fixed gear ratios, a stepless transmission has two pulleys connected by a chain belt under tension. Between the outsides of the pulleys, there is a conical shaft, which the chain belt sits on. By continuously adapting the space between the pulleys, you get a variable gear ratio, because the change of the contact surface alters the diameter. This is comparable to transmitting torque from small to big gears and vice versa. Finally, one planetary gear set on the input shaft is still required in order to select forward or reverse driving.”




Due to the almost infinite availability of gear ratios, powertrains with a stepless transmission operate at the most efficient point across all engine speed bandwidths. Peter Naumann: “For each operation point, the transmission enables the powertrain to find the optimum balance of fuel efficiency, attenuation of noise and vibrations, and accelerator pedal responsiveness.”



“Cars with low weight and powertrains producing maximum torque of 230-300 Nm are most suitable for stepless transmissions”, says Naumann. “With 236 Nm of torque and a kerb weight of 1,350kg, the new Astra 1.4 is therefore ideal.”




Great idea: Stepless transmissions in automotive development

Idea of a stepless or shiftless transmission is not new. American engineer Milton Reeves invented a variable speed transmission for saw milling way back in 1879, which he then applied to his first automobile in 1896.

Numerous variations on the stepless-theme followed in the 1920s, on motorcycles as well as automobiles. George Constantinesco, an engineer and inventor from Romania, created one of the most interesting in 1926. The “Constantinesco Car” featured a 5hp engine with an integrated torque converter. According to advertisements, it was the car with “No clutch, no gears, only one control – the accelerator”!

It took until 1958 for the stepless concept to become more widely known. At the Amsterdam Motor Show, DAF presented the 600 small family car with its innovative Variomatic transmission. Designed by Dutchman Hub van Doorne, the Variomatic made the little DAF sedan famous, among other things, for driving backwards as fast as forwards! Thereafter, stepless transmissions appeared on all sorts of machines, from tractors and snowmobiles to motorbikes and all-terrain vehicles, as well as automobiles.

Opel offered its first example in the Vectra C, which made its debut in 2002. However, the career of the “CVTronic” was short-lived, with production at the Szentgotthard factory in Hungary ending in 2005.

Suitable for a variety of vehicles: From small cars and SUVs to vans and hybrids

Today, “stepless” is making a comeback, aided by the increasingly strict global targets for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Because stepless transmissions adjust gear ratios continuously, the engine can always run at its most efficient speed, which saves fuel, especially in city driving.

As a result, they are available on a variety of automobiles, such as small cars and limousines, SUVs, minivans and hybrids. However, modern stepless transmissions are notable for more than just their high efficiency. They are also popular with drivers and passengers who appreciate the imperceptible shifting of gears.

Stepless transmissions are already common in Asian markets, where their smooth and quiet performance makes them very popular. The Opel GT Concept will celebrate its world premiere at the 86th Geneva International Motor Show (March 3 to 13, 2016). This trendsetting sportscar expresses the continuous innovative strength of Opel – breathtaking in its shape, reduced to the bare essentials, pure passion. The thoroughbred athlete with a front mid-engine and rear-wheel drive is a direct descendant of the Opel GT and the Monza Concept and takes Opel’s sculptural design philosophy to the next level. The sportscar is avant-garde yet puristic, renounces everything that disturbs the pure form. The GT Concept has no door handles or exterior door mirrors.

In the best tradition: GT Concept continues philosophy of Opel Experimental GT

The Opel GT Concept will follow in the footsteps of the famous Opel Experimental GT at the Geneva Motor Show. In 1965, only one year after the foundation of the first design studio run by a European car manufacturer, Opel presented this sleek and expressive coupé with the reliable technology of the Kadett B at the Frankfurt Motor Show. However, it was not just innovative because it was the first concept car ever presented by a European manufacturer. The GT already shone with innovations such as retracting headlamps and displayed a slim form along with perfect proportions without unnecessary decoration. The uncompromising concept by Erhard Schnell mainly wanted to be one thing – a design statement. The reactions from the public were so overwhelming that the series production Opel GT was at dealerships only three years later. The rest is history – a success story, an automotive icon.

Aware of tradition: The distinctive red front tires – mounted on rims with a cheeky skateboard design – are reminiscent of the Opel Motoclub 500 motorbike from 1928.
The GT Concept once again showcases Opel’s pioneering spirit. A dynamic driving machine something that is already symbolized by the red signature line that splits the vehicle body horizontally and proportions it. The distinctive red front tires – mounted on rims with a cheeky roller skates design – are reminiscent of the Opel motorbike Motoclub 500 that was also avant-garde at its time and was the proud owner of two red tires in 1928.

Apart from that, the GT Concept does not have many links to the past. The long bonnet, the absence of a trunk lid, the central dual exhaust and of course, the name all refer to the original GT. Apart from that the Opel GT Concept is independent with no sign of retro-design.

It’s certainly difficult to reinvent an icon but just as the Experimental GT was avant-garde back then, so too is this GT Concept today – absolutely pure, minimalistic, yet bold and uncompromising. This coupé impressively demonstrates the continuous development of our Design philosophy – ‘Sculptural Artistry meets German precision’,” said Mark Adams, Vice President, Design Europe.

A key innovation of the Opel GT Concept are the large doors with the integrated side windows that show a seamless transition from glass to painted surfaces. Both the driver and the front passenger gain access to the unexpectedly spacious interior after pressing the touchpad for the electric doors that is integrated in the red signature line of the roof. Even tall drivers have enough room inside. The doors immerse considerably into the front wheel arches when opened. This space-saving and patented mounting allows a large opening angle – particularly in relatively tight parking spaces. The compact athlete is therefore optimized especially for urban areas. Two cameras mounted behind the wheel arches ensure a safe overview while driving in the city. They transmit their images to two monitors on the left and right-hand side of the cockpit – the days of exterior door mirrors and blind spots are therefore over. The windshield flows into a glass panorama roof enabling the occupants to enjoy a driving experience similar to that offered by a targa with a removable roof.

Real sportscar: Front mid-engine, turbocharged and rear-wheel drive

Stretched hood: Just like the first Opel GT and US sportscar icon Corvette the GT Concept has a front mid-engine.
The stretched hood reveals the powertrain concept of the GT Concept: Just like the first Opel GT and US sportscar icon Corvette also made by GM it has a front mid-engine. The vehicle’s center of gravity is therefore low and central – ideal for sporty handling and excellent cornering dynamics. The Opel GT Concept has a powerful 1.0 liter, three-cylinder turbocharged engine based on the ultra-modern all-aluminum engine used in Opel ADAM, Corsa and Astra. The extremely efficient direct injection gasoline unit develops 107 kW/145 hp and maximum torque of 205 Nm in its sporty trim (consumption values for the Opel GT Concept are not available yet). The turbo power is sent towards the rear axle with mechanical differential lock via a sequential six-speed transmission that is operated by shift paddles on the steering wheel. Thus, the Opel GT Concept possess traditional rear-wheel drive especially appreciated by sportscar purists. The performance of the two-seater with a total weight below 1,000 kilograms also matches this. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds and has a top speed of 215 km/h.

A further highlight of the Opel GT Concept are the main headlamps with integrated indicators. Thanks to ultra-modern projection technology, these shine very three-dimensionally. The next generation adaptive full LED light is obviously the perfect match for this technology. The Opel IntelliLux LED Matrix light, which allows glare-free high beam driving, already made its debut in the new Astra in 2015 and won the SAFETYBEST Award. The Opel GT Concept sees the introduction of the next stage of development of the intelligent light system. The design of the lights is rounded off by the three dimensional design of the tail lamps that make the new Opel GT distinctive at night.
