This year's Paul Pietsch Classic , which came to a close on Saturday afternoon on the market square in Offenburg, Baden, was varied in every respect. Beforehand, the participants had covered many kilometers in their shiny vintage cars in changeable weather through picturesque villages, along scenic valleys, and over the heights of the Black Forest. Always in the thick of it: Opel Classic with real icons of the past decades. To mark the anniversary of "125 years of automobile manufacturing at Opel," the brand drove up with classics from the 1960s to 1990s, including the Admiral V8, Kadett GT/E, Monza, and the "aerodynamics world champion" Calibra. True to the anniversary motto "Forever forward since 1899," a current model was also present - in a prominent position. The highly efficient, electrified Opel Astra Sports Tourer plug-in hybrid was used as the lead vehicle on both days of the rally.

"Paul Pietsch Classic is an unforgettable experience every year. Even the odd rain shower cannot harm the beauty of this region and the classic cars that are on the road here," says Opel Classic manager Leif Rohwedder, who conquered the stages together with Motor Klassik editor Peter Michaely in a bright yellow Opel Calibra 4x4 2.0i 16V, built in 1990, looking back on the past two days.

From Offenburg through Black Forest: Sporty Opel classics inspire

111 teams started on Friday to complete the scenic circuit through the Black Forest. From Offenburg, the route first led towards Kaiserstuhl, then turned through the Elztal and went via Schramberg and Schiltach back to Offenburg. On day 2, the regularity rally also lived up to the motto of its namesake Paul Pietsch - "For the love of motorsport" - and his connection to his homeland. Here, the participants passed landmarks such as Appenweiher, Sasbach, Gaggenau and the Bühler Höhe - exactly the right terrain for the streamlined, 110 kW (150 hp) Calibra sports coupe.

But the crews of the other Opel Classic vehicles also showed what their style icons can do. For example, auto motor und sport editor-in-chief Birgit Priemer and former editor-in-chief Bernd Ostmann mixed up the field in a 1977 Opel Kadett GT/E specially designed for sporting use. In addition to the sporting ambitions, the enjoyment factor was not neglected. "It is always impressive how much positive attention the Opel brand attracts from visitors to the Paul Pietsch Classic. Many people still have fond memories of Opel Kadett GT/E. It sparks a lot of passion, even at the side of the track," says Birgit Priemer, looking back on the experience.

Current compact class bestseller from Rüsselsheim also impressed with its dynamism and efficiency: the organizers of Paul Pietsch Classic were able to make themselves comfortable in an Opel Astra Sports Tourer plug-in hybrid with 133 kW (180 hp) system output and a powerful 250 Newton meters of torque. Electrified station wagon led the field - responsibly and resource-efficiently with a purely electric and thus locally emission-free range of up to 65 kilometers according to WLTP 2 (EAER City according to WLTP 2 : 65-66 km).

Picturesque Black Forest villages, scenic landscapes and in the midst of them classic cars that are second to none: Last week the 10th Paul Pietsch Classic came to an end in the most beautiful spring weather. Participants drove into the market square in Offenburg in Baden with their shiny vintage cars to great applause. In line with the anniversary rally, Opel was there with “sporting icons from three decades”. Opel GT, Commodore GS/E, Kadett GT/E and Corsa GSi had already attracted the attention of fans on the winding routes through the Black Forest - just like the Opel Astra GSe (fuel consumption according to WLTP 1 :1.2-1, 1l/100km, CO2-Emission 26-25 g/km; each combined). The new top model of the Astra series led the field on both days and showed how tradition and modern, locally emission-free driving fun can be optimally combined.

Dream vehicles on dream routes: Around 120 teams in Offenburg at the start

With varied routes to the Kaiserstuhl and – on day 2 – past Freudenstadt and through the Kinzig Valley, the regularity rally was once again in the tradition of its namesake. Born in Freiburg, Paul Pietsch was not only one of the founders of Motor Presse Stuttgart, but also a Grand Prix driver. As befitting, the Hamprecht/Thomas team circled an Opel GT over the winding climbs and descents. The yellow and black GT from 1969, which can reach speeds of up to 185 km/h, with its unusual "Coke Bottle" design, still lives up to the slogan "Only flying is nicer" even today.

Jörg Mannsperger, Managing Director of Motor Presse Stuttgart, and Opel Classic Manager Leif Rohwedder were in no way inferior. The duo covered the stages through the high and northern Black Forest in style in an Opel Commodore GS/E Coupé "Rallye Monte Carlo 1973". The specimen is a homage to rally ace Walter Röhrl, who made his debut 50 years ago with his co-driver Jochen Berger with such a sports coupé in the Irmscher team at the Monte Carlo Rally. The field of "sporty Opel icons" was completed this weekend by an 85 kW/115 hp Opel Kadett GT/E of the 1000 series and a top speed of up to 190 km/h, as well as a Corsa GSi from 1989. The sporty top model of the first Corsa generation was made as a manoeuvrable, lively small car to drift through the tight corners.

New Opel Astra GSe also showed its potential. With a system output of 165 kW/225 hp and a maximum torque of a powerful 360 Newton meters, the "Grand Sport electric" sets standards. With sharp, GSe-typical design highlights and innovative technology such as a special chassis lowered by 10 millimeters including KONI-FSD suspension technology (Frequency Selective Damping), it conveys precise, pure driving pleasure - and in a responsible manner. Thanks to the plug-in hybrid drive with a 12.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, Astra GSe drivers can cover up to 64 kilometers with zero local emissions according to WLTP 2 (EAER City according to WLTP 2 : 69‑73 km).

A dream tour of a special kind came to an end in saturday on the market square in Offenburg. In the most beautiful early summer weather and pleasant temperatures, 128 classic cars started the 9th Paul Pietsch Classic over the past two days . In the anniversary year of "160 years of Opel" , field was led by all-new Opel Astra.

Behind them in the field of participants were legendary Opel models such as Kadett GT/E, Commodore A Coupé and Kadett GSi – with prominent drivers on board. British touring car champion and Le Mans winner Joachim Jockel” Winkelhock the scenic route. On day 1, it led through the Kinzig and Elz valleys in the High Black Forest and on the second day over the Bühlerhöhe in the direction of Baden-Baden in the northern Black Forest.

We are honoring Paul Pietsch, the racing driver and one of the founding publishers of Motor Presse Stuttgart. And we are also celebrating 160 years of Opel in the year of the new Astra. Our tradition is very important to us. It is our duty and a matter close to our hearts to look after them.”

Blessed with fantastic routes and wonderful views, the regularity rally was entirely in the tradition of Paul Pietsch, who gave its name and was born in Freiburg. At the same time, the former Grand Prix driver was one of the founders of Motor Presse Stuttgart and regularly made the route from his native Black Forest to the publishing house into old age. Managing director of Motor Presse Stuttgart, Jörg Mannsperger, took the opportunity to drive in a famous Blitz model together with Opel Classic manager Leif Rohwedder. Duo completed the 15 special stages in an Opel Commodore A Coupé known for its particularly smooth-running 2.5-litre straight-six.
