This dream car impresses with both its exterior and its interior values: The Opel GT Concept shows what a popular sportscar of the future will look like – puristic and breathtaking alike. The coupé will celebrate its world premiere at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show (March 3 to 13). Visitors will initially be able to admire its sculptural shape. Then they can imagine taking the well-trained athlete out of the city on to the next alpine pass and enjoying its dynamism in every hairpin. Beyond its stunning exterior, the Opel designers have also created an interior that perfectly blends typical cues from a sports coupé and futuristic solutions for the human/machine interface. Everything in the Opel GT Concept is ready for the pure pleasure of an exciting drive. The two sports seats fit like a tailor-made suit, the steering wheel and the pedals can be adjusted electrically down to the last millimeter, the low beltline of the doors enables a casual arm position, colors and shapes create a perfect spatial feeling and the sky above the panorama roof races by. Human and machine become one.

However, nothing distracts the driver and the front passenger from the essential. The interior is just as puristic as the exterior. The instrument panel of the Opel GT Concept made from brushed aluminum visually enhances the lightweight construction (the overall weight remains below 1,000 kg) and seems to float in front of the occupants. It is, however, a structural member between the slim A pillars of the windshield – here structure becomes sculpture. Opel’s design philosophy “Sculptural artistry meets German precision” continues throughout the interior. Just like the attention to detail: Round monitors are embedded in the outer aluminum air jets with the polished GT emblem. The monitors capture the vehicle’s environment and replace side door mirrors.

True mate: Opel GT Concept anticipates the driver’s every wish
Elsewhere, buttons cannot be found anywhere. The sportscar is operated purely by voice control and a central touchpad. Experts refer to the control concept of the car as Human Machine Interface (HMI). The Opel concept car comes with a revolutionary HMI. In the GT Concept the adaptive system is waiting to get to know the driver and adapt to his or her needs. The car thus adjusts itself to the driver and not the other way round. This results in a dialogue during which the car answers in a charming voice and can for example chose the right music, route or temperature according to the situation. The Opel HMI is like a friend on the passenger seat – it recognizes whether hip-hop or chill-out is wanted. In order to always spontaneously offer the most appropriate support, the software learns from every command, every touch of the steering wheel and every setting over days, months and years. A similar approach is already known from self-learning adaptive automatic transmissions. They adapt to the style of the respective driver with either sporty or economic gearshifts. The adaptive HMI is a holistic approach and shows that vehicle operation seen in science-fiction movies is slowly becoming reality.

The instruments also reflect the atmosphere in the Opel GT Concept. If the driver has had a stressful day and wants to surf through the menus without saying a word, he just needs to reach for the round touchpad on the center stack, from where he can easily operate all functions. The two classically inspired round instruments are actually projection surfaces that can be backlit in different colors and display a variety of information three-dimensionally – a further development of the system shown in the 2013 Opel Monza Concept. Rpms and speed are always clearly visible on the left whereas the information shown on the right instrument can be configured individually.

If the Opel GT Concept is cruising along on a business trip, while permanently connected to the office or the client, the right instrument facilitates navigation with an intuitive graphic without any numerical values; when under time pressure, it displays consumption. When the mood changes because the end of the working day is nearing and the driver fancies cornering at speed, the accelerator, transmission and engine control are optimized accordingly and the right-hand instrument even displays the g-force values of the longitudinal acceleration.
Buttonless: Operation only via touchpad and voice control.
The car may then even speak out and issue a warning such as: “Be careful. Don’t overlook the motorcycle behind us!” After all, the Opel GT Concept keeps a close eye on the traffic situation - and does not just adapt to the driver’s tastes and moods, but also to the exterior conditions to also enhance safety. Instead of side door mirrors, Opel GT Concept relies on cameras mounted behind the front wheel arches to show what is happening behind and next to the car. The images are transmitted to round monitors to the left and right of the driver. In addition, the large central screen displays all desired information. The adaptive Opel HMI is more than just a good friend – it is an additional on-board guardian angel.

The new Opel Insignia and the Insignia Country Tourer – with their
all-new cockpit and the latest infotainment generation – make their
world premiere at the 65th Frankfurt Motor Show (September 12
- 22, 2013). The spotlight was on three criteria during the enhancement
of the cockpit and infotainment system: clear, simple and thus
intuitive operation, individualization of the infotainment offer, and of
course a maximum of comfort and safety for driver and passengers, which
is increased even more thanks to lowest-possible distraction from road
traffic.

touchpad operation, we offer onboard entertainment possibilities
unrivalled in this class,” says Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “A
large display, few buttons and innovative connectivity solutions for
real individual mobility all add up to pure driving pleasure in the new
Insignia.”
Clear center console design for easy operation
The center console has a completely new look and feel. It harbors a
host of state-of-the-art technologies and functions. The control panel
was drastically simplified. Operation of the infotainment system and air
conditioning is fast and intuitive.

The new infotainment generation is part of the IntelliLink family
introduced in the Opel ADAM at the beginning of the year. Thanks to
user-friendly IntelliLink technology, smartphone functions can be
optimally integrated into the car. In the Insignia, the driver can
choose between four different operating possibilities.
The new system
Navi 900 Europa Touch can be controlled over an 8-inch color hi-res display
with touch operation. From the starting screen the driver can access all
core functions and sub-menus such as radio stations, song titles,
smartphone connection or 3D navigation map via the touchscreen as well
as a button on the steering wheel, voice control or the brand new
touchpad.
The degree to which the system can be individualized is unique – up
to 60 personal favorites can be stored. While earlier infotainment
systems only enabled the selection of radio stations, driver and front
passenger in the Insignia can now also choose their personal favorites
in navigation, telephone and entertainment. So, for example, the most
popular radio station is directly next to the most important telephone
numbers on the display, which are just one fingertip touch away from the
stored business address in the navigation directory.
Infotainment with touchpad: A fingertip leads the way
The touchpad is ergonomically integrated in the center console and
offers a completely new way of quickly and intuitively accessing the
infotainment system. Its touch-sensitive surface recognizes handwriting
and reacts immediately to finger movements, vibrating lightly to give
noticeable haptic feedback and making operation of the new infotainment
generation child’s play without distracting the driver from the traffic
situation.
To move the cursor, just one finger is needed, followed by slight
pressure on the touchpad to open the selected menu option. With a
two-finger swiping motion, the driver can for example change the audio
source and a three-finger swipe over the touchpad surface opens the
favorites list. The navigation system map has zoom functionality which
can be controlled with a pinching motion just like on a smartphone. Even
individual letters – for instance when searching for a song title in
the database or a city in the navigation system – can be entered by
fingertip on the touchpad. When just the first letter is entered, a list
of stored addresses appears in the navigation system. This makes the
touchpad that reacts to different, smartphone-typical gestures and
finger movements unique and exclusive, as it is only available in the
Opel Insignia in this form.
But the infotainment and navigation system’s cleverness doesn’t stop
there. When searching for a street in the city they are currently in,
drivers must just simply enter the street name. If the street is in
another city, then the city should be entered right after the street.
Entering a country is only necessary when the destination actually is in
a country other than where the driver is currently located. Entry of
the names is without periods or commas, only spaces should separate the
data – it doesn’t get any easier or faster than this. The street map for
over 30 European countries can then be displayed in 2D or 3D graphics.

Synchronization of the infotainment system and a smartphone is just
as easy. Drivers only have to connect their cell phone to the
infotainment system and many smartphone contents are displayed on the
color touchscreen in the center console. These include not only
telephone and song lists; films saved on the smartphone can also be
viewed on the 8‑inch monitor in the Insignia – of course only when the
car is stationary.
Insignia drivers can control the newest generation infotainment
system over newly designed, clearly laid-out steering wheel controls as
well as voice commands in addition to via buttons, touchscreen and
touchpad operation in the center console. The advanced voice recognition
function can be activated by the simple push of a button on the
steering wheel controls. Then using voice control, addresses can be
entered into the navigation system, saved songs played or friends called
via smartphone. All while the drivers’ hands stay safely on the
steering wheel and their eyes on the road. In the Insignia Sport and
Innovation equipment lines, the top infotainment system Navi 900 Europa
Touch is standard, while in the Insignia Selection and Edition it can be
ordered for 1,200 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

information overview. In addition to the classic readouts like speed,
rpm and fuel tank level, further driver-defined details on navigation,
smartphone use and audio options are directly in the driver’s line of

Similar to the infotainment system display in the center console, the
most important functions can be called up here on the starting screen
and then the sub-menus selected. To do this, the driver uses the buttons
on the right side of the steering wheel. The steering wheel buttons on
the left are to control safety functions such as cruise control or the
speed limiter. So Insignia drivers not only benefit from a
multi-functional, customizable infotainment system, but also from an
instrument panel with a centrally located, color display that can be
tailored to individual needs and preferences.
The corresponding sound experience is provided by the
state-of-the-art Bose Sound System. Up to nine loudspeakers, two
subwoofers, four broadband loudspeakers, tweeters and a digital sound
processor ensure Insignia passengers enjoy ultimate musical
entertainment for just 580 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).

precision” to the next level. New powerful and ultra-efficient direct
injection engines like the two new-generation Turbo gasoline units and
the 99 g Turbo diesel expand the wide portfolio. This minor emission
puts the new 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine in the A+ efficiency class.
Both variants (the 88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp according to EG Nr.
715/2007) consume either as the four or five-door model with six-speed
manual transmission and Start/Stop system just 3.7 liters of fuel per
100 km in the combined cycle (Sports Tourer: 3.9 l/100 km). Therefore

The new Opel Insignia also makes a statement in terms of powertrain
and chassis. While the mid-size model already received many accolades
for driving comfort, handling and roadholding, the new edition plays in a
higher league. Opel engineers made a host of improvements to the
chassis including to the dampers, stabilizers and steering, resulting in
decreased noise and vibrational behavior and even higher comfort.
The broad, newly expanded engine portfolio is tuned to performance
and comfort without any compromises. The new Opel Insignia offers the
choice between the three propulsion alternatives gasoline, diesel and
LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas); power output ranges from 81 kW/110 hp to
239 kW/325 hp.
The new Opel Insignia 2.0 CDTI is the eco and fuel-saving champion. Thanks
to its new 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine, the 88 kW/120 hp and 103
kW/140 hp variants emit just 99 g/km CO2 (Sports Tourer: 104 g/km CO2)
according to EG Nr. 715/2007. This puts it in the A+ efficiency class,
as the four and five-door models with six-speed manual transmission and
Start/Stop system consume just 3.7 liters of fuel per 100 km in the
combined cycle (Sports Tourer: 3.9 l/100 km) – optimum values in this
vehicle class. Both variants also boast superb torque, with the 88
kW/120 hp Turbo diesel providing up to 320 Nm and the 103 kW/140 hp
model even up to 370 Nm – thanks to an automatic overboost function.

The top-of-the-line diesel is the 143 kW/195 hp 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI. The
high-performance diesel with sequential, two stage turbo chargers
reaches impressive torque of 400 Nm and is distinguished by its direct
responsiveness as well as exemplary propulsion power across a broad rpm
range.
The most prominent gasoline engines are the two turbo direct
injection units: the 2.0 SIDI Turbo with 184 kW/250 hp and 400 Nm
maximum torque as well as the 1.6 SIDI Turbo from the newest engine
generation with 125 kW/170 hp and 260 Nm, and even up to 280 Nm with
overboost (SIDI = Spark Ignition Direct Injection).
Both boast superb power development and excellent running smoothness
with high fuel economy. They can be coupled with a six-speed manual
transmission and Start/Stop functionality or with a new, low-friction
six-speed automatic gearbox. In addition to front-wheel-drive, the
2.0-liter SIDI Turbo is also available with all-wheel-drive.

An alternative and extremely economic powertrain option is the
103 kW/140 hp Opel Insignia 1.4 LPG with maximum torque of 200 Nm. It
meets – like its petrol version - the stringent guidelines of the future
Euro 6 emissions standard. With fuel consumption of 7.6 l/100 km
(Sports Tourer: 7.9 l/100 km) in the MVEG combined cycle and low CO2 emissions of 124 g/km (Sports Tourer: 129 g/km CO2), the Insignia LPG model is unrivalled in efficiency class A.

The new Insignia evolves the multi-award-winning Opel design
philosophy “sculptural artistry meets German precision” in the mid-size
segment. The design theme articulates premium aspiration and dynamics
with an unmistakable low-and-wide front graphic to visually pronounce
its wide stance. The high-gloss chrome grille is wider and lower than
before. The brand bar that cradles the Opel logo is leaner and includes
winglets that link the eye to the re-designed headlamps. Depending on
trim version, these come with bi-xenon lamps including the safety
lighting system AFL+. All headlamps are executed in high gloss black
with embedded chrome accents that enhance the technology within. The
up-level headlamps include a wing signature daytime running light
featuring energy-saving LEDs.

The lower front fascia inserts are
designed to appear slim and wide, in order to emphasize the upper grille
size. Fog lamps are combined with wide black inserts and chrome
accents. These grow from thin to thick as they near the wheelhouse to
pronounce the width of the front design and the Opel Insignia’s
top-class design.

The side view of the new Insignia sedan and hatchback are clearly
more differentiated than before through their unique tailgates and
integrated spoiler design. The roofline of the five-door model fades out
not until it reaches the spoiler trailing edge to emphasize a classic
coupé silhouette. On the four-door variant, the crease line continues
along the edge of the spoiler to emphasize length on the elegant sedan.

This is also echoed in the rear, where the new Insignia features a
wider and lower proportioned rear end design. The high-gloss chrome
brand bar has been positioned lower on the tailgate and includes the
brand logo. It extends into the tail lamps to include the slim-look
reverse functions. The tail / stop functions of the split 2-piece tail
lamps are executed as LEDs on all levels for sedan and hatchback.
Characteristic for all body versions is the light design as a sharp
“wing” signature.

The new Opel Insignia also offers a host of technology, safety and
comfort highlights. These include state-of-the-art radar and
camera-based assistance systems ranging from adaptive cruise control to
side blind zone alert, forward collision alert and premium seats with
the AGR seal of approval and the keyless entry and start system “Open
& Start”, to name just a few.

Prices for the new Insignia start at 24,325 euros for the four-door
model (RRP incl. VAT in Germany). With the 103 kW/140 hp 1.4-liter turbo
gasoline engine and Start/Stop, it already comes with extensive
standard equipment. This includes leather steering wheel, comfort seats,
air conditioning and stereo radio 400 B.T. with 4.2 inch colour
display, MP3 compatibility, audio streaming, USB- and Bluetooth
connection.
