Opel Extends Protection of its Performance and Employment

  • In the context of energy transition, led by European CO2 regulations, Management and general works council agreed on extensive measures to safeguard the future
  • Exclusion of forced redundancies extended by two years to July 2025
  • As part of the allocation of the next generation of Opel Astra, new model will be produced in Rüsselsheim, both as hatchback and station wagon
  • EMP2 platform will be localized in Rüsselsheim, allowing to build plug-in hybrid
  • Decision to invest is linked to Rüsselsheim performance improvements and secures operation in at least two shift.

In the context of far-reaching changes with regard to the ever-stricter CO2 regulations that the entire automotive industry is facing, Opel’s management and the Opel general works council have agreed extensive measures to secure employment and further increase Opel’s competitiveness. Exclusion of forced redundancies has been extended by two further years to 2025 for the employees in Germany. Trainees who are currently serving their apprenticeships will be given permanent contracts.

As a result of performance improvement, the company has decided to make further investments in the plant in Rüsselsheim, thus providing the perspective for many years of manufacturing. Rüsselsheim will produce the next generation of the Opel Astra as a five-door as of 2021 and as a station wagon in Rüsselsheim as of 2022, considering that around 95 percent of station wagon are sold in continental Europe. Allocation includes the internal combustion engine and the plug-in hybrid variants. Second plant is still to be confirmed.

This extensive investment decision will secure at least the two-shift operation of the Rüsselsheim plant.

Management and the general works council also agreed that the voluntary leave programme will be reopened for employees in Rüsselsheim, Eisenach and Kaiserslautern. This is limited to a maximum of 2,100 positions. Employees born up to and before 1963 will have the opportunity to participate in partial retirement or senior leave programmes. The voluntary leave programme is based on the principle of double voluntary action. This means employee and the employer must come to a mutual agreement.

“This agreement creates a further considerable improvement of our competitiveness. With the allocation of the next generation of Astra, we aim at safeguarding the future in times of massive transformation. At the same time, this agreement gives our employees long-term security. Protection of employment until 2025 is a strong signal,” said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller.

Kings of Aerodynamics: New Opel Astra Shares Calibra’s Crown

New Opel Astra, which will make its world premiere at the IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show (public days September 12-22), has joined the legendary Opel Calibra and the Opel Insignia as the most aerodynamic automobiles the German carmaker has ever produced. With a drag coefficient of 0.26 for the Opel Astra hatchback as well as the Sports Tourer estate, the new compact Opel belongs to the most aerodynamic cars in its class. Drag has a major influence on fuel consumption. Aerodynamic efficiency is therefore key to reducing CO2 emissions.

Opel Calibra


As the king of aerodynamics, Opel Calibra has worn the crown for almost 30 years. With a drag factor of 0.26 Cd, the sleek coupé makes no secret of its wind-cheating talents; but the new Astra’s equally low drag has been reached by the optimization of details that are less obvious to the naked eye. Current model, which made its world premiere at the IAA in 2015 and was elected European Car Of The Year the following year, already has a low drag coefficient of 0.29. When it came to the development of the new Astra, the engineers in Rüsselsheim refused to rest on their laurels. Instead they gave themselves an ambitious new goal – class-leading aerodynamics for both the hatchback and the Sports Tourer estate versions of the compact bestseller.

Using the Stuttgart University wind tunnel operated by the Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines, the development team concentrated on optimising the current Astra’s already excellent aerodynamics for the new model.

An automobile produces 40 to 50 per cent of its total aerodynamic drag in and around the underbody, the wheels and the wheel arches. Opel engineers therefore focussed much of their attention on these areas. They also formed a special cross-functional task force to develop a new full-face active shutter.

New Astra’s full-face active shutter further improves fuel efficiency by closing the top as well as the bottom of the grille. By combining thermal, electrical and aerodynamic considerations, intelligent control strategies for opening and closing the upper and lower portions of the grille – even independently from each other – can enable highly efficient driving under a variety of real-life conditions. For example, a ten per cent cut in drag results in a fuel consumption reduction of around two per cent in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), or up to five per cent when driving at 130 km/h.

Reduction in drag achieved by the full-face active shutter alone lowers CO2 emissions of the new Astra by up to 2.0 g/km.

Full-face active shutter: Thermal as well as aerodynamic benefits

The full-face shutter also delivers thermal advantages by delaying cooling down after switching off the engine, or by accelerating the engine warm-up after a cold start, which especially in winter provides significant benefits in fuel consumption and cabin heating comfort.

Despite the apparent simplicity and logic of the solution, the full-face active shutter represents a significant challenge for designers and engineers: they need to consider numerous factors, including not only styling, packaging, and pedestrian protection, but also insurance ratings, engine and transmission types, their corresponding thermal management and, of course, cooling requirements.

Underbody airflow-improvements include a cover under the engine and transmission, panels at the front of the floor, an enlarged fuel tank heat-shield that doubles as an air deflector, ride-height lowered by up to 10mm, depending on the model variant, and aerodynamically shaped control arms at the rear axle.

In total, the aerodynamic optimization of the new Opel Astra saves 4.5g of CO2 per kilometre in the WLTP cycle. In the context of increasingly strict CO2 standards, this is a hugely important saving: as of 2021, an average CO2 emissions target of 95 grams CO2 per kilometre for the new car fleet will apply in the European Union.

IAA star 1989: World premiere for aerodynamics champion Opel Calibra

New Opel Astra makes its world premiere at the IAA exactly thirty years after the Opel Calibra. Following the start of production in 1990, the two-door coupé from Rüsselsheim ruled for ten years as the most aerodynamic production car in the world, with a drag coefficient of only 0.26. Opel Calibra owed its reign to its long, low profile and a host of aerodynamic tweaks, such as optimum height of the front spoiler and the inward tapering of the rear end. Rocker mouldings between the front and rear wheels further reduced drag by preventing the air flowing underneath the car from spilling outward.

Opel Calibra was the most successful sports coupé of the 1990s, more than 238,600 units were produced between 1989 and 1997. The Calibra was available with a total of five power outputs, ranging from the 85 kW (115 hp) 2.0 litre to the 150 kW (204 hp) turbo. Highlight of the Calibra’s career in motor sport was victory in the 1996 International Touring Car championship.

Two new Buick hatchbacks, the Verano Hatchback and Verano GS, are coming this year. The additions to the Verano family are built on the same mid-range global passenger car platform as the new Opel Astra.

The new Buick Verano models have trendy, sporty styling along with European car-like handling, premium interiors and advanced technology. They are targeted at trend-setting consumers who are looking for a driving experience that is “born with sportiness.”

The hatchbacks feature Buick's innovative low-slung, wide stance along with a double-sweep beltline, flowing bodylines, a floating roofline and a front grille that is seamlessly connected to wing-shaped headlights.

Buick Verano GS has additional stylish yet sporty elements and a wide range of colors. Its optional interior and exterior packages include a black waterfall grille, aerodynamic spoilers, bright red strips for the front and rear bumpers, bright red brake calipers and dark-painted five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels – all of which ignite a passion for driving.

Both models incorporate GM's new Ecotec small engines, which combine powerful performance with exceptional fuel economy. The Verano Hatchback pairs a 1.5L SIDI naturally aspirated engine with a six-speed intelligent manual transmission or six-speed DSS intelligent automatic transmission. The Verano GS has a 1.5T SIDI turbocharged engine, which is accompanied by a seven-speed DCG intelligent transmission. The powertrain combination produces maximum output of 124 kW/5,600 rpm, with fuel consumption of only 5.9 L/100 km.

The new Verano family members are built on a firm chassis. They offer European car-like handling thanks to testing and tuning at Germany's famed Nürburgring circuit.

SAIC-GM launched the Buick Verano new-generation sports sedan on June 27. The Verano Hatchback and Verano GS will strengthen Buick’s presence in China’s premium mid-range passenger car segment, offering consumers a greater range of products to choose from to meet their needs.

1,032,056 deliveries is best in brand’s 110 year history

Buick delivered 1,032,056 vehicles in China, the United States, Canada and Mexico in 2013, the most Buicks sold in a single year in the brand’s 110-year history. The previous record was 1,003,345 sold in 1984.

Strong growth in both China and North America accounted for the record-breaking year, with global sales up 15.4 percent over 2012. China posted a 15.7 percent sales gain, while the U.S. delivered a 13.9 percent sales increase. Canada also saw strong sales growth, with a 9.5 increase over 2012. In the U.S., 42 percent of Buick buyers were new to the brand and to General Motors.

Buick experienced strong global growth in both crossovers and sedans from a product lineup that is among the freshest in the industry and the strongest the brand has ever featured.

Buick Verano 
The new Encore small crossover ended 2013 with 97,311 sales globally, while the eight-passenger Enclave saw sales grow 6.5 percent in North America. Enclave recorded its best year of U.S. sales in 2013.  Exclusive to China, the GL8 posted an annual sales gain of 9.7 percent.


Buick Excelle GT
In the sedan segment, the China-exclusive compact Excelle again dominated in the compact sedan segment, delivering 6.9 percent sales growth. The Excelle GT and Verano compact sedans combined globally to deliver a 16.3 percent gain, while sales of the Excelle XT hatchback, sold only in China, were up 17.5 percent.
