New Opel ADAM ROCKS live at Geneva Motor Show  2014

Turbocharged pocket rocket

With 110 kW/150 hp and 220 Nm of torque on tap, the special new version of the 1.4 liter Turbo ECOTEC unit in the Opel ADAM S boasts a specific power output exceeding 100 hp/liter. It is a turbocharged, high performance unit derived from the Opel ADAM’s existing four-cylinder, 1.4 liter engine, that has been exclusively developed for the Opel ADAM S. It delivers 50 percent more horsepower and 70 percent more torque than its naturally-aspirated 1.4 liter stable-mate. Combined to a six-speed manual gearbox, it propels the Opel ADAM S to a top speed of 220 km/h.

Opel ADAM S’s 1.4 Turbo engine includes dual cam phasing for continuously variable valve timing and a turbocharger integrated within the exhaust manifold for reduced weight and compact packaging. Numerous weight-saving features include a cast iron block with a hollow frame structure, hollow-cast camshafts and a plastic intake manifold. Start/Stop technology is naturally fitted, and the engine already meets the future Euro 6 emission standards.

More power is just part of this pocket rocket’s appeal – it also has a specially-tuned performance chassis developed exclusively for the ADAM S and direct, sharp performance steering to match. The car displayed on the Opel booth also reveals how stopping power is increased with the installation of larger OPC performance 'S' Red Brakes including 16-inch front and 15-inch rear discs featuring red-painted calipers. The 18-inch wheels are fitted with 225/35 R 18 tires.

Unique looks with Red ’n’ Roll design theme

Opel ADAM S at the Geneva Motor Show gives further impressions of features from the future production version. Its red body paint is mated with an anthracite grey roof enhanced by a special rear spoiler; the grille brand bar and door mirror caps both feature a sporty carbon-look. The front lip spoiler, side sill moldings and an extended rear bumper cut-out with a visible, bold exhaust tailpipe complete the ADAM S livery.

The cabin features front Recaro Performance seats in Morrocana and leather and adopts ADAM S’s unique Red ’n’ Roll design theme. It consists of a leather pack, including a red leather-trimmed steering wheel, gearshift and handbrake as well as distinctive red and white flashes on the instrument and door panels. Many further refined details allow for more individualization.

The close-to-production ADAM S version also has black rear privacy glass, LED daytime running and rear tail lights, electronic climate control and Opel’s award-winning, sophisticated IntelliLink system that offers state-of-the-art connectivity and apps. This infotainment system is fully compatible with latest smartphones using both ANDROID and Apple iOS. It provides USB and Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, seven speakers and a 7-inch high-definition color touch-screen. Opel’s smart IntelliLink system also provides navigation by the BringGo app, as well as the Stitcher and TuneIn apps. The integration of Apple iOS devices into the system enables use of the SIRI EYES FREE voice control function. It’s safe and easy-to-use technology which makes ADAM the best connected small car on the market.

!NEW! Dan Ammann to chair Adam Opel AG Supervisory Board

GM reinforces commitment to Opel with the appointment of further top executives

Dan Ammann is the new Chairman of the Opel Supervisory Board.

The Supervisory Board of Adam Opel AG has elected GM President Dan Ammann (41) to succeed Steve Girsky as its new chairman. Ammann is a member of the Supervisory Board since November 2011. This January, he had been officially nominated by GM for the senior position.

In addition, GM has reinforced its commitment to Opel with the appointments of further top executives to the Supervisory Board: Mark Reuss, Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain; Julia Steyn, Vice President of Global Mergers and Acquisitions; Chuck Stevens, Executive Vice President and CFO and Jim DeLuca, Executive Vice President Global Manufacturing.

In addition to Steve Girsky, Mary Barra has left the Supervisory Board in order to focus on her new leadership role as GM Chief Executive Officer. John Stapleton, who is now CFO of GM North America, has also left the Supervisory Board, while Tim Lee, Executive Vice President, Global Manufacturing, and Chairman, GM China, resigned because he is retiring from the company.

Mary Barra had already praised Steve Girsky in January for his dedication and exceptional performance: “Steve has led the turnaround of GM Europe and brought the region back to the path of profitability. Dan Ammann will maintain this course with the clear aim to reach breakeven by the middle of the decade.”

Dr. Wolfgang Schäfer-Klug, head of the Opel works council and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board: “In his role as GME President and head of the Supervisory Board Steve Girsky has brought GM and Opel together again. In dialogue with the employee representatives he made decisions of high importance for the future of Opel. Dan Ammann has been part of this policy as a Supervisory Board member and I am sure that he will continue this course.”

!NEW! Opel Astra OPC EXTREME: Uncompromisingly Sporty

  • Study for low-volume production run: World premiere at Geneva Motor Show
  • From the racetrack to public roads: Fastest-ever Astra on its way
  • Turbo power and carbon fiber: Over 221 kW / 300 hp, 100 kilograms lighter than OPC
  • Breathtaking looks: High-tech lacquer highlights sculptural Opel design

The new Opel Astra OPC EXTREME  - The fastest-ever Astra boasts more than 2.0 liter turbo engine with over 221 kW / 300 hp and is 100 kilograms lighter than conventional OPC.

The Opel Astra OPC EXTREME that makes its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in six days is a real race-bred performance car. Developed on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the most challenging race track in the world, it is powered by a 2.0 liter turbo engine with over 221 kW / 300 hp and equipped with all the key high-tech components from its racing peer, the Opel Astra OPC Cup. The Astra OPC EXTREME was developed directly from the Cup version and brings pure racing technology to the road. If public reaction is as positive as expected, Opel plans a low-volume production run for the super sporty, street-legal EXTREME.

2.0 liter Turbo Direct Injection engine with over 221 kW / 300 hp

Over 300 hp will be unleashed from under the EXTREME’s carbon fiber hood. Its 2.0 liter turbo gasoline engine, with Direct Injection and variable camshaft phasing, is quite simply the most powerful four-cylinder unit Opel has ever produced. The all-aluminum engine is mated to a slick, six-speed manual gearbox transmitting power through a limited-slip differential. This race-proven powerplant will have an easy time of it with the OPC EXTREME, because the super sporty car is 100 kilograms lighter than a conventional Astra OPC thanks to its high-quality, carbon fiber components.

Widely used in Formula 1 racing to reduce weight, carbon composite is incorporated throughout the EXTREME. This high-strength, ultra-light material is used for the aerodynamically-optimized rear wing, the diffuser, front spoiler, hood, suspension cross-bracing, the engine cover, complete wheels, rear wheelhouse ventilation and roof. The carbon wheels are 20 kilograms lighter than their aluminum counterparts. This is weight saving in a decisive area because unsprung mass is substantially reduced – much to the joy of engineers and driving fun of drivers. The inhouse manufactured carbon fiber roof is almost as light as a feather. It weighs just 2.6 kilograms, compared to a steel roof’s 9.3 kilograms, and noticeably lowers the Astra EXTREME’s center of gravity. The fenders are made of aluminum and weigh only 800 grams a piece instead of 2.2 kilograms in steel.

Weight reduction in key areas greatly improves agility, overall handling and, of course, the car’s power-to-weight ratio. As a result, the street-legal EXTREME sweeps through fast curves as playfully and quickly as its racing brother in the Nürburgring Endurance Championship (VLN). Opel has also given the EXTREME breathtaking stopping power to match, with a Brembo six-piston brake system including 370 mm diameter discs up front race car. Ultra high-performance, 245/35, 19-inch tires, specially developed for the EXTREME, also play a key role and give almost as much grip as those on the race car. In addition, the chassis (spring/damper) is adjustable, just like in a real touring car racer.

The pursuit of uncompromised performance continues in the design of the EXTREME’S cabin: the back seats are out and a safety roll bar is in. The driver and co-driver are perfectly positioned in specially-designed Recaro bucket seats, complete with six-point safety belts from Schroth. In the Astra OPC EXTREME, the crew doesn’t just sit in the car, they are fully integrated as part of the vehicle itself. The driver also has the tactile pleasure of gripping a superb, carbon-fiber-reinforced, suede-covered steering wheel with fine yellow decorative stitching.

Opel Motorsport’s core color also dresses up the Astra OPC EXTREME elsewhere, for instance in the exclusively designed logo and as lacquer on the side sills and front spoiler lip.

Apropos lacquer, the Astra GTC body format – the base model for the OPC EXTREME – ideally embodies Opel’s sculptural design philosophy. Its flowing, sculpted shapes and precise accents blend into dramatic proportions. The Astra OPC EXTREME’s multi-layer paint lacquer is combined with high-quality decal details to give a three-dimensional effect, further emphasizing the car’s clean edges, bold lines and athletic proportions.

“With the new Astra OPC EXTREME we show the pure joy of driving! This study is quite simply spectacular and driving enthusiasts will appreciate its looks, which are head-turning without grandstanding. Its interior is superb and typically Opel – exciting, precise and quality-made in Germany. The EXTREME is the new top-of-the-line model in our Astra family with all the attributes of a super sporty car,” says Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.
