The enhancement of individual mobility towards even more safety, efficiency and environmental compatibility is one of the major challenges facing society. In the process, connecting automotive road users with each other (Car-to-Car) and with their environment (Car-to-X) is becoming increasingly important. The start of the test phase of the SimTD project (“Safe Intelligent Mobility – Test Field Germany”) in Hesse is a milestone towards the implementation of this type of vehicle communication.
“The results of the joint SimTD project will set the trend for all of Europe. With the launch of the SimTD pilot project, one of the largest global field tests in Car-to-X communication is now beginning,” says Dr. Burkhard Milke, Opel Director Electric/Electronic Engineering adding, “Cars learn to exchange data according to standardized rules. They also learn to process the transmitted data in such a way that they can quickly and reliably filter and display information important to the driver. In the past Opel was able to lay the foundations for Car-to-X technologies in projects such as DIAMANT. These findings will be taken into account when we now take on the baton from Continental after successful test preparations and assume leadership of the fleet testing within SimTD.
After several years of intensive preparation, the test phase will begin in the greater Frankfurt am Main area with a fleet of 120 vehicles from German car makers. The field test will last until the end of the year and include various studies on Car-to-Car technology and its impact on increasing traffic safety and efficiency. Around 450 test drivers will take part. During the test drives, millions of communication events will be generated in order to exchange data. Within the test fleet, 20 Insignia Sports Tourers equipped with state-of-the art equipment for vehicle communication are participating.The data compiled from the tests will be analyzed in close consultation with the University of Würzburg and the Technical University of Munich, whereby the universities will also ensure a good statistical cross section of drivers and test routes. The latter were chosen in close cooperation with the city of Frankfurt am Main and Hessen Mobil. The home base for all field test vehicles is a test fleet base on an industrial compound in Frankfurt Höchst. The fleet is controlled by the Drive Center near the Hessian Traffic Control Center.At the top of the wish list: Road weather warningAmong the many aspects tested in the context of SimTD, the development of the road weather warning function, for which Opel is responsible, plays a central role. According to studies, this information is at the top of drivers’ wish list. Road weather warnings combine real time data on road conditions and the weather report with warnings about hazardous weather conditions such as heavy rain, fog or cross wind. This data is of great added value to drivers and lead to a significant increase in traffic safety.Four road weather information stations located in the field test vicinity, which are already providing detailed information, for example for road gritting trucks, lay the foundations for the test. The critical parameters being monitored are the dew point and road surface temperature. Based on this data, site-specific warnings are generated and displayed in the vehicles. The HMI (Human-Machine-Interface) used by all partners for the field test was developed by DFKI, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence.
The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) provide funding for simTD, because this consortium has the potential to promote a new dimension of foresighted driving, traffic control, and accident avoidance. The ministries are convinced that a commonly agreed standard is essential for the commercial deployment of this pace-making technology. simTD is a joint project initiated by leading German automakers, automotive suppliers, communication companies and research institutes, together with assistance from the public sector.

New Opel Zafira Tourer - LPG technology powers 1.4 Turbo, 140 hp engine
- Opel extends its offer of cost efficient LPG versions to nine models

Opel is extending its Zafira Tourer model portfolio with a new liquefied petroleum gas powered version, a 103 kW/140 hp, 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX turbo engine. The powerhouse provides the same output and torque of 200 Nm (1,850 – 4,900 rpm) in both the cost efficient LPG and gasoline operation modes. With its new LPG offer, the Zafira Tourer thus shows that it is just as versatile in its powertrain variants as it is inside its cabin: the master of versatility offers all conventional propulsion types in its portfolio. Opel is one of the very few car makers in the segment of the seven seater compact vans that offers gasoline, diesel, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) ex works. In the LPG mode the Zafira Tourer 1.4 LPG Turbo ecoFLEX engine only consumes 8.6 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, equivalent to 139g/CO2 (gasoline mode: 6.7 l/100 km, 156 g/km CO2). Compared to gasoline propulsion, the LPG mode is around 40 percent cheaper (based on an average price per liter of high octane fuel of 1.60 euro compared to 0.76 euro for LPG). In this manner, not only the costs at the gas station but the CO2 emissions can be significantly decreased. The entry level price for the Zafira Tourer 1.4 turbo LPG ecoFLEX starts at 27,050 euro (rrp. for Germany including VAT).
With the Zafira Tourer LPG, Opel is increasing its LPG fleet to nine models. It is complementing the already existing broad offer of the brand which covers several vehicles lines: the Corsa (three and five door), the Meriva and Astra (five door and Sports Tourer) plus the Insignia (four and five door sedan as well as Sports Tourer).
Extended range thanks to LPGThe 1.4 l turbocharged Zafira Tourer LPG engine has been optimized for the use of liquefied petroleum gas. For the LPG variant, Opel engineers strengthened the engine valves and valve seat inserts and optimized the engine control unit. The LPG tank which has a usable filling volume of around 60 liters is perfectly integrated under the car floor so that the full load capacity is maintained and the high flexibility of the optional Zafira Tourer “Lounge seating” system is available. With a single tank of fuel, the Zafira Tourer achieves a maximum range of around 650 kilometers; if the gasoline tank is used in addition a range of up to 1,500 kilometers can even be reached.The driver can easily alternate between the LPG and gasoline propulsion mode: either automatically when the LPG tank is empty or with a switch in the instrument panel. An LED display is illuminated when the car operates with LPG; as soon as the vehicle is in the gasoline mode the light is off. example, the Opel safety checklist includes specific crash tests for the gas
tank and other components which are housed in collision proof areas and are
perfectly integrated into the safety structure of the vehicle.Like in the Zafira CNG version, the gas tanks are perfectly integrated under the floor of the car, ensuring that the load compartment is always maintained spacious and not restricted. Customers can be sure that their LPG vehicle is equipped with state-of-the art technology ex works which lives up to the typical Opel values of durability, manufacturer warranty and maximum safety.Like all the other Opel LPG models, the Zafira Tourer LPG is assembled at the Opel Special Vehicles GmbH (OSV), an Opel subsidiary with expertise in special vehicle lines and modifications based in Rüsselsheim.
LPG: Environmentally Friendly, Cost Effective and Universally AvailableLPG propulsion is gaining in popularity in Germany and Europe. This is hardly surprising as the LPG price at the pumps is around half of the gasoline price. Early 2012, more than 450,000 vehicles of this type were registered in Germany. This is hardly surprising as the price of LPG is almost half of high octane gasoline. Until the year 2018, the German authorities are also granting a fixed tax break for LPG fuel. However, not only does the car owner see the financial rewards but there are also environmental benefits as LPG vehicles emit up to 15 percent less carbon-dioxide than cars with a conventional powertrain. In Germany, this fuel is available at around 6,500 or 45 percent of all gas stations. Europe wide there are more 35,000 in total.

New Opel Astra J BiTurbo – Most powerful Diesel Astra Ever
- Astra line-up now with new 195 hp 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI, 400 Nm torque

The Opel Astra line-up is being enhanced with a new diesel spearhead of power: the four cylinder 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI engine with 143 kW/195 hp and 400 Nm maximum torque. It is available in three body styles: the five door hatchback, the GTC coupé and the Sports Tourer station wagon. No other brand offers this broad choice of high performance diesel models in the compact segment. The five door Astra BiTurbo CDTI achieves a top speed of 226 km/h, making it the fastest Astra diesel ever (Sports Tourer 222 km/h, GTC 223 km/h). While providing powerful performance and driving fun, the BiTurbo engine is also highly efficient. In combination with fuel saving Start/Stop technology which is standard across all Astra BiTurbo models, the GTC only uses 4.9l/100 km (Sports Tourer and five door 5.1 l/100km) Emissions for the GTC are 129 g/km (134 g/m for the hatchback and station wagon).Launched early 2012 in the Opel flagship Insignia, the 195 hp powerhouse engine introduces sophisticated sequential BiTurbo technology to the Astra family which comes with a twin intercooler system. The new Astra high performance diesel variants can be ordered starting in the fall and are scheduled to be available at dealerships by the end of this year.Smooth acceleration without turbo lagDepending on the load range in the Astra BiTurbo four cylinder diesel engine, two turbochargers of different sizes work either separately or together. The smaller turbocharger accelerates especially quickly at low engine speeds. This means the accelerator pedal responds well and the undesired “turbo lag” effect is prevented. Starting at 1,250 rpm, the driver can already draw on 320 Nm – this is 80 percent of the maximum torque of 400 Nm which is available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm.In the mid range of rpm, both turbochargers operate together, with the larger turbocharger pre compressing the intake air, before it is fully compressed in the smaller one. A bypass valve is controlled continuously to pass on part of the exhaust gases to the larger turbo. As a result, the driver still enjoys smooth acceleration. At higher rpm (from around 3,000 rpm) all the gases flow directly to the larger turbocharger, maintaining the fluid power delivery at higher speeds.The main focus in the development of the 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI engine was to ensure a rapid build up of charge air pressure in the low rpm range, while giving the accelerator responsiveness in the mid rpm range. The engine air is ideally adjusted according to the rpm range and the needs of the two turbochargers of different size. At low rpms an additional cooler that is exclusively linked to the small turbocharger ensures that the small volume of air passes in a direct path to the combustion chamber. In the mid rpm range, the bigger and more powerful turbocharger becomes increasingly involved. Its larger stream of air is cooled by a bigger cooler.As the layout of the Astra engine compartment is different to the Insignia, engineers went for a clever packaging solution by splitting the intercooler module internally into the smaller and larger cooler. This differs from the Insignia BiTurbo engine where the coolers are in separate locations. Both coolers in Astra BiTurbo engine are air cooled.Sporty and sharp design inside and out underscores high performanceThe new BiTurbo high performance diesel variants of the five door, Sports Tourer and GTC have been given an even a sharper and more aggressive exterior appearance varying from body style to body style and adapted to each specific model. The front fascias of the BiTurbo Astra body versions (GTC, Sports Tourer and five-door) underscore the cars’ high performance and more aggressive nature. The upper grille has a similar shape as the one used on the Astra GTC, however the front bar is always in body color and the five door hatchback and Sports Tourer BiTurbo models feature the new wing shaped bar across the grille. The lower air intake area has also been given a sporty design treatment: the area where the central grille merges into the outer grille has been sculpted in a shark fin like shape, making the car appear more aggressive. The entire side window surround of the five door and Sports Tourer models is in chrome, while in the case of the GTC Biturbo the lower window insert is black. In all variants, there are two exhaust tail pipes at the rear as well as a pronounced rear bumper shape that is specifically adapted to the model. These features give the car an added muscular stance.Inside the cabin of the Astra BiTurbo variants, JetBlack colored fabrics or leather are combined with Magic Red in the edge of the seats. Magic red stitching and seams in the seats, door inserts and the gear shifter boot add to the sporty atmosphere of the interior. A new flat bottom leather steering wheel and special floor mats with red surrounds are other sporty components of the Astra BiTurbo cabin.BiTurbo versions benefit from broad Astra technology offerThe now most powerful diesel, the Opel Astra BiTurbo, also benefits from many of the safety and comfort increasing premium features available in the new Astra line-up. They include the second generation Opel Eye front camera with the enhanced Traffic Dign Assistant (TSA II), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Following Distance Indication (FDI) and Forward Collision Alert (FCA). A rear view camera is available in the Sports Tourer and five door BiTurbo models.The new systems complement the already existing broad Astra offer of innovative technologies, some of which are unique in the compact segment, while others are rarely found among competitors. One of these is the latest generation intelligent Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL+) with Bi-Xenon headlamps and a host of sophisticated lighting functions, including high beam assist, dynamic curve light, cornering light, and variable light distribution that automatically adjusts according to prevailing conditions, including even the weather.
FlexRide for top driving dynamics – GTC with HiPerStrutsThe drive dynamics of the BiTurbo variant of the Astra were further improved by modifying bushings, reducing trim height with stiffer springs and including a new rear axle with higher roll rate.On top of the already dynamic driving characteristics of the Astra, customers can opt for Opel’s intelligent mechatronic FlexRide system which adjusts automatically to the prevailing driving conditions and offers three modes: Standard, the comfort oriented “Tour” mode and the more active “Sport” mode. The FlexRide system was especially adapted for the BiTurbo to guarantee good ride performance together with the higher level of vehicle responsiveness.Like all Astra GTC and OPC models, the Astra GTC BiTurbo variant features HiPerStruts (High Performance Struts) as standard on the front wheel suspensions for an even sportier ride and handling. The HiPerStruts improve grip, increase cornering power and significantly reduce torque steer allowing drivers to get the most out of the performance capabilities.For extra comfort, ergonomic front seats are offered across all Astra models including the BiTurbo versions. The AGR certified seats (Aktion Gesunder Rücken) are easy on the backs of the driver and front passenger.
Another optional feature that adds an extra premium note to the cabin of the GTC models including the BiTurbo and OPC variants is the Panoramic windscreen. The exclusive windscreen patented by Opel reaches all the way to the middle of the car roof, giving the driver and all passengers an extraordinary visual, space and driving experience.
