Vauxhall Mokka: IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights

Following in the footsteps of the new Vauxhall Corsa, Astra and Insignia, all-new Vauxhall Mokka and the zero emissions Mokka-e are available with Vauxhall’s leading IntelliLux LED Matrix headlight technology.

For those after the very best in lighting technology, Ultimate Nav and Launch Edition models for the Mokka and Mokka-e come standard with IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights. These feature 14 individual LEDs and offer more powerful and more precise lighting than conventional headlights or Xenon bulbs.

Housed in the new Vauxhall Vizor front end, the glare-free headlights automatically switch to main-beam outside urban areas, and continuously adapt the range and distribution of the light beam pattern to suit the road conditions and avoid dazzling oncoming traffic. Main beams are also automatically switched on at speed above 30 mph.


Another benefit of LED light technology is they are more efficient than conventional bulbs, resulting in lower energy consumption from the battery – helping improve the range in the fully electric Mokka-e.

Every new Vauxhall Mokka comes standard with Vauxhall’s latest-generation LED headlights and taillights, not only giving the vehicles a sleek and stylish look, but also improving visibility on the road.

Happy Tenth Birthday Opel Ampera – Opel’s Pioneering Electric Car

If we want to reach the future climate goals, the share of electric vehicles must increase considerably”, says Opel CEO, Michael Lohscheller. Accordingly, Opel will have nine electrified vehicles (EV) on the market by the end of this year – from Corsa-e, Mokka-e, Zafira-e Life, Grandland X plug-in hybrid and the next generation Astra, to the Combo-e, Vivaro-e and Movano-e light commercial vehicles. By 2024, the brand will offer an electrified variant of every model in its portfolio.

However, Opel already made its first contribution to raising EV sales ten years ago, in 2011. With the launch of the Ampera – the first electric car with extended range from a European brand – Opel established itself as a pioneer on the road to electric mobility. The revolutionary, sleek and practical Ampera was Europe’s first electric vehicle to enable “go anywhere at any time” mobility. When it went on sale at the end of 2011, the Ampera founded a completely new vehicle segment in the European automobile market.

Opel Ampera received enthusiastic receptions across the board. More than 5,000 “e-pioneers” declared themselves as potential customers even before the car went on sale.



Media were equally impressed, the jury of leading international journalists electing the Opel Ampera and its Chevrolet Volt sister model as winners of the “2012 European Car of The Year” award. In a long term test started that same year by the ADAC German automobile club, the Ampera demonstrated its durability by covering more than 200,000 km in eight years.



Not content with popularity and awards alone, the Ampera proved its mettle in competition too. In 2012, Opel’s extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) won the 13th International Monte Carlo Rally for electric cars and alternative propulsion systems. Winning Opel Ampera was driven by French rally legend, Bernard Darniche and Joseph Lambert, three more finished among the top ten.



Ampera confirmed Opel as an innovation-leader and immediately became Europe's best selling electric car in 2012, with 6,631 units and circa 21.0 per cent share of the European electric passenger car segment. The leading market for the EREV was the Netherlands, followed by Germany and the United Kingdom. Following the end of production in 2015, registrations of the Ampera totalled more than 10,000 units.

Voltec electric propulsion with range extender

The front wheels of the Ampera are electrically driven at all times. A 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack feeds an advanced, 111 kW/150 hp electric drive unit to deliver between 40 and 80  km of pure electric operation with zero emissions – depending on terrain, driving technique and temperature – when fully charged. According to the regulations for measuring fuel consumption and CO2 emissions at the time, the Ampera consumed 1.2 l/100 km and emitted 27 g/km CO2 combined in the NEDC cycle.


On the road, the Ampera’s Voltec electric propulsion system ensures lively performance. Instant torque of 370 Nm enables zero to 100 km/h acceleration in around nine seconds and a top speed of 161 km/h. The Ampera delivers nearly silent electric drive under battery power and a refined performance even in extend-range drive mode.



Thanks to the Ampera’s intelligent and practical extended-range capability, drivers enjoy peace of mind because they will never be left stranded with a depleted battery.

In addition to a pure battery, zero-emissions driving range sufficient to meet the daily needs of most European drivers, the Ampera also provided a total driving range of more than 500 kilometres thanks to its range-extending petrol engine. This is seamlessly engaged to generate electricity when the battery has reached its minimum state of charge.


Electric drive unit, located under the hood alongside the gasoline engine, consists of an electric traction motor, an electric generator/motor, and a planetary gear set that improves overall efficiency by reducing the combined rotational speed of the electric motors. Unlike a conventional powertrain, there are no step gears.

In extended-range mode, which activates whenever the battery has reached its minimum state of charge, motive power from a generator is seamlessly delivered to the electric drive unit. The generator is driven by a highly efficient 1.4-liter, 63 kW/86 hp gasoline engine.

Most of the time, drivers selected one of the two main driving modes: Normal and Sport. ‘Sport’ mode increases the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal. There are two additional modes for special driving situations: ‘Mountain’ mode ensures sufficient battery energy is available for sustained driving on alpine roads. ‘Hold-charge’ mode preserves the remaining energy capacity of the battery pack by activating the gasoline engine.

T-shaped, 198 kg, 16 kWh (installed capacity) battery pack is positioned in the centre tunnel of the vehicle. It comprises 288 lithium-ion battery cells, configured for optimum performance and durability. It uses a liquid thermal management system and at the time was the only mass-produced battery pack that could be warmed or cooled – an industry first.




Opel Ampera was delivered with a six-meter long charging cable conveniently stowed in the trunk. Using a 230V/6 or 10A power outlet, owners could fully recharge the battery in around nine or five hours respectively and programme the charging time.

Exterior and interior design: Electrifying good looks

Equally as revolutionary as its unique Voltec electric propulsion system was the Ampera’s eye-catching design. Sleek, aerodynamically efficient styling encapsulates a cabin that replaces conventional dials and gauges with high-definition colour displays and touch-screen functionality.



Cabin reflects the ground-breaking nature of the Ampera’s propulsion system. Two interactive, high-definition colour screens denoted the car’s unique character. Replacing conventional instruments in front of the driver is the driver information centre, a reconfigurable graphic display.

Cabin offers all the space, comfort, and convenience features you would expect from a modern compact car: five-door flexibility, comfortable accommodation for four adults, and a seat up/seat down load carrying capacity of 310/1,005 litres.

Fun-to-drive chassis developed for European demands

Ampera handles like a typical Opel. Developed by Opel engineers in Rüsselsheim, its chassis characteristics were honed to satisfy the expectations of discerning customers.

Front suspension is by McPherson struts with aluminium lower control arms and hydraulic ride bushings. Semi-independent rear suspension features a compound crank (torsion beam) which combines the packaging advantages of a conventional torsion beam axle with low weight and consistent wheel camber control.



Advanced friction brake blending system maximizes the energy generated during braking. It allows for maximum regenerative braking through the electric motor, recharges the battery when braking, and seamlessly engages the friction brakes when the pedal is stepped on harder for a fast stop.

New Opel Combo-e Life: Everyday Hero Goes Electric

New Opel Combo-e Life

All charged up and heading for a driveway near you soon – Opel announces the new Combo-e Life battery electric vehicle! Highly versatile and practical, with a huge amount of interior space, the all-electric leisure activity vehicle (LAV) from the German carmaker comes with either one or two sliding side doors and is available as a 4.4-metre-long standard or 4.75 m XL version, both with either five or seven seats. Depending on the driving profile and the prevailing conditions, the new Combo-e Life can drive up to 280 kilometres on a single charge of its 50 kWh lithium-ion battery (WLTP) 1. Owners can “refill” the battery to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes at public charging stations.


Young families with multi-faceted lifestyles, who live in or near towns or cities, must transport several children and also want “green mobility”, will especially appreciate the Opel Combo-e Life. The new electric car from the brand with the Blitz even features a towing capacity of 750 kg 2 – class-leading in this market segment – with the option of trailer stability control.

Electric drive: Clean mobility for cross-country as well as downtown

Thanks to 100 kW (136 hp) and 260 Nm of torque from the electric propulsion system, the Combo-e Life is perfect also for the open road. Depending on the model variant, the leisure activity vehicle accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in only 11.2 seconds 3, while the 130-km/h maximum speed (electronically limited) makes the LAV “autobahn-proof”. A sophisticated regenerative braking system with two user-selectable settings further increases efficiency.


Battery with 216 cells and 18 modules is packaged under the floor between the front and rear axles, so that it does not compromise usage of the passenger compartment. In this location, the battery lowers the centre of gravity as well, which benefits wind stability and cornering, for additional driving fun.

Opel Combo-e Life is ready for a variety of energy infrastructures and charging options, ranging from wall box to fast charging or even a cable for charging from a domestic plug socket if necessary. Using a 100 kW DC public charging station, charging of the 50 kWh battery to 80 per cent takes only around 30 minutes. Depending on the market and infrastructure, the Combo-e Life features a powerful three-phase 11 kW on-board charger or a single-phase 7.4 kW on-board charger as standard.

Best in class: Extensive list of ultra-modern driver assistance systems

Along with its petrol and diesel engine siblings that were crowned “Best Buy Car Europe 2019” by AUTOBEST, the zero-emission Combo-e Life also makes no compromises on safety, comfort or convenience. The comprehensive portfolio of class-leading technologies and driver assistance systems extends from hill descent control, lane keep assist and driver drowsiness alert, to traffic sign recognition and forward collision alert with pedestrian protection and automatic emergency braking.

Particularly helpful for parking is the Panorama Rear View camera that increases vision to the rear and to the sides. Owners needing extra traction on mud, sand or snow can upgrade the Combo-e Life with the IntelliGrip electronic traction control system.


Opel offers the Combo-e Life in two lengths (4.40 m and 4.75 m as the XL model variant) with five or seven seats, which also makes it an attractive car for taxi firms. Shorter five-seater offers at least 597 litres of boot space (850 litres in the longer version). Multifunctional everyday hero almost displays “freighter” qualities with the rear seats folded down. Luggage volume of the short version then more than triples to 2,126 litres, while the longer one can carry up to 2,693 litres. In addition, the optional front passenger dump-latch seat folds flush with the rear seats, extending the length of the loading area so that even surfboards can be transported.

Heavens above: Panorama roof with electric sunblind plus overhead storage

With the luggage safely stowed away, the optional panorama roof allows passengers to star-gaze or lap up the sun’s rays. If the sun is too strong, an electric sunblind – activated via a switch in the overhead console – can be closed to provide protection. When open, the panorama roof also improves the feeling of space even further while simultaneously creating a pleasant and light ambience. When ordered with the panoramic roof, Opel Combo-e Life comes with overhead storage running down the centre of the vehicle with LED lighting as standard. In this configuration the newcomer is also fitted with a large 36‑litre storage box mounted above the hat tray in the boot.

Owners of both variants can choose between the standard second row bench with 60/40 split or three individual seats, which can be folded conveniently from the boot. In both cases, each seating position has its own Isofix child seat bracket as standard, allowing for three child seats to be fitted next to each other.

When everyone is sitting comfortably, they can enjoy the Combo-e Life’s infotainment. The Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi Pro systems come with a large 8.0-inch touchscreen and top connectivity. Both feature phone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

E-services: Charging the Opel Combo-e Life throughout Europe is as easy as pie

In order to make living with the Combo-e Life as comfortable as possible, “OpelConnect”, the “myOpel” app and “Free2Move” offer special solutions for electric vehicles. Services are accessible via apps.

The “Charge My Car” function from the “Free2Move” app enables access to more than 220,000 charging points throughout Europe, including payment. The “Free2Move” app makes a preselection based on the distance to the charging point, the charging speed and the current charging price of the possible public charging options.


The “OpelConnect” portfolio ranges from eCall and breakdown calls to numerous other services, such as vehicle status and information. LIVE Navigation 4 provides online traffic information in real time.

New Opel Combo-e Life will show up at dealerships this autumn, joining the Corsa-e, Mokka-e, Grandland X plug-in hybrid and Zafira-e Life as the newest member of Opel’s electrified passenger car range. Including the next-generation Astra as well as the Vivaro‑e, Combo-e and Movano-e light commercial vehicles (LCV), the brand will have nine electrified models in its portfolio by the end of this year. Opel will offer an electrified version of every passenger car and LCV model by 2024.
