The engine and component production plant in Kaiserslautern plays a seminal role in the implementation of Opel’s product offensive. This was a key message during Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann’s visit to the plant in Germany’s West Palatinate region. He was joined by Malu Dreyer, Prime Minister of the Rhineland-Palatinate and Eveline Lemke, Minister of Economy. Neumann announced an investment for the Kaiserslautern plant to the order of 130 million euros.

From left: Chairman of the Works Council of Kaiserslautern Lothar Sorger, Site Director Elvira Tölkes and Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann
The sum will go into the construction of bodywork components and front seat structures for the next generation Opel Astra, as well as axles and bodywork components for the next generation Opel Insignia. It will also be spent on engine manufacturing. As of October next year, Euro 6 generation of the 2.0 liter family of CDTI turbo-diesel engines will be coming off the production line. The engine will stand out through its high performance, low consumption and noise attenuation as well as reduced exhaust emissions.

All four of the competence centers that make up the Opel plant in Kaiserslautern will benefit from the investment: engine manufacturing, bodywork components and seat manufacture, the building of chassis components and the press shop.

Karl-Thomas Neumann stated: „Kaiserslautern delivers high tech products to our automobile production plants which are of the highest quality. In this way, the plant makes a significant contribution to the success of our automobiles and to our product offensive which will secure the launch of 23 new models and 13 new power units over the course of the coming years.”

“I am delighted that a major employer of the region is investing in the future for the long-term and in doing so, securing employment. This is evidence of the attractiveness of Kaiserslautern and speaks for the strong skills base of our employees” said State Prime Minister Malu Dreyer.

„The investments in the Kaiserslautern plant are proof of the high quality of our manufacturing and our competitiveness” explains Site Director Elvira Tölkes. “We manufacture top-end products with a motivated team and are very well positioned as a center for component production in the Opel/Vauxhall manufacturing network.”

The West Palatinate plant with its 2,200 employees currently produces components and engines for the Opel models ADAM, Astra, Corsa, Meriva, Zafira and Insignia. More than nine million engines have been produced to-date.

!NEW! Opel Monza GSE Shines at IAA Special Exhibit The Stars from 1983

  • Association of German Automotive Industry’s special classic cars exhibition in Hall 3.1
  • 1983 Opel Monza GSE now eligible for coveted German classic car H-plate
  • Three Opel legends spanning three decades on display

Star from 1983: The Opel Monza GSE is an exclusive automobile, with sporty equipment and trim, powered by a 180 hp, 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine.
The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) will hold a special exhibition of classic cars at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA: www.iaa.de) from September 12 – 22. The theme is ‘The Stars from 1983’ and the VDA invites all IAA visitors to its stand in Hall 3.1 to enjoy the legendary vehicles on display.

Star from 1983: Opel Monza GSE 3.0 V6
As the Opel Monza GSE turned 30 years old this year, it is now officially a member of the classic car club. This coupé ancestor of the Opel Monza Concept Car, also being presented at the IAA (Hall 8, Stand D09), is an exclusive automobile, with sporty equipment and trim, powered by a 180 hp, 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. One of its neat, functional highlights is an LCD display for data such as speed, rpm, fuel level and engine temperature. During the four years the Monza GSE was in production, 43,812 customers bought this Opel dream car.

Star from 1993: The Opel Calibra was the most successful sports coupé of the 1990s.
The special exhibition also features other iconic cars from Opel. The youngest is the 170 hp Calibra V6, introduced 20 years ago and built from 1993 to 1997. The Opel Calibra was the most successful sports coupé of the 1990s and 238,647 units were built during its seven-year production run. This popular model was widely praised for its progressive design and recycling-friendly construction. It also set standards in terms of aerodynamics, boasting a cd value of 0.26, which is one of the lowest ever registered for a series production vehicle. The Calibra is extremely popular as a modern-day classic and will surely become a genuine classic car of the future.

Star from 1963: Opel Kapitän L – L stands for luxury. The 90 hp, six-cylinder in-line engine gave the elegant car a top speed of 150 km/h.
Already established as a true classic is the 1963 Opel Kapitän L (L stands for luxury), which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and is the third, and oldest, Opel highlight on the VDA stand. Straight lines and a stretched form are the Kapitän’s main bodystyling themes, while the slightly arched roof appears to hover over its large glass surfaces. Thanks to a full-view panorama windshield and the sloping panorama rear window, all-round visibility is superb. The 90 hp, six-cylinder in-line engine gave the Kapitän a top speed of 150 km/h. The 145,616 satisfied customers who bought this variant made it not only the most successful Kapitän ever, but also the best-selling six-cylinder sedan in Germany.

!NEW! Opel Ampera Wins "eCar Award 2013" As Best Overall Concept

  • Opel Ampera wins award in the new category "First Evergreens"
  • Opel CEO Dr. Neumann accepts prize at the IAA in Frankfurt

The price has been handed over to Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann by the editors-in-chief Bernd Wieland (on left) and Olaf Schilling.
In 2010, the revolutionary Opel Ampera won the newly introduced "eCar Award” as the "Innovation of the Year"; in 2011 the series production vehicle was voted "eCar of the Year". And not even two years after its launch, the electric car with the clever range extender concept is already one of the first evergreens in the electric car segment: more than 13,000 readers of Auto Bild and Auto Test chose the Ampera over 15 competitors as the "best overall concept" among the "first evergreens" of electric mobility. At the IAA in Frankfurt the initiators of the "eCar Award", editors-in-chief Bernd Wieland (Auto Bild) and Olaf Schilling (Auto Test), congratulated Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann on this success.

"The trendsetting propulsion concept of our Ampera was convincing from the very start," said Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann at the award ceremony. "The fact that the Ampera is now already regarded as an 'evergreen' and the readers have selected it as the best overall concept shows us that the technology combining electric drive and a range extender is not only well received, but also that it has proven itself in real-world mobility."

As an important boost for the further proliferation of electric mobility, Opel has just lowered the entry-level price for the Ampera to 38,300 Euro (RRP incl. VAT in Germany) – 7,600 Euro less than before. The automaker is thus again making innovative mobility solutions accessible to a broader customer base.

Opel Ampera: Electric mobility suitable for everyday use

The Opel Ampera is the first electric vehicle that does not require any changes in habit or attitude. A unique 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack feeds an advanced, 111 kW/150 hp electric drive unit to deliver between 40 and 80 km of pure electric operation with zero emissions – depending on terrain, driving technique and temperature – when fully charged. In extended-range mode, which activates whenever the battery has reached its minimum state of charge, power is seamlessly inverted to the electric drive unit from a generator driven by a gasoline engine. This enables a total driving range of more than 500 kilometers without refueling. The Ampera’s electric propulsion system delivers instant torque of 370 Nm that enables zero to 100 km/h acceleration in under ten seconds and a top speed of 161 km/h.

The Adam Opel AG Supervisory Board today named Peter Christian Küspert (52) new Board Member for Sales and GME Vice President Sales and Aftersales, effective November 1, 2013. Küspert will take over the reins from Duncan Aldred, who was Acting GME Vice President Sales and Aftersales and will now turn all of his attention back to his role as Chairman and Managing Director of Opel’s British sister brand Vauxhall. Aldred will also become a member of the Opel/Vauxhall Leadership Board, the company’s extended leadership team.

Peter Christian Küspert has gathered extensive experience in the automotive industry over the last two decades. He worked at Daimler AG from 1990 to 2009, including as Head of Sales and Marketing Germany for the Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart brands. And with the sales expert Peter Christian Küspert, we will bring additional momentum to this offensive. Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann adds: “As our new Board Member for Sales, Peter Christian Küspert has a good foundation to build on, as we were able to defend our position as the third-largest passenger car brand in Europe this year. We even grew our market share in many countries. Duncan Aldred played a major role in this success, and we would once again like to thank him for his outstanding work and commitment.”

!NEW! World Premiere for Everyone – Opel puts the IAA on the road

Opel parades exhibition highlights on a car transporter through the city of Frankfurt am Main

Opel parades exhibition highlights on a car transporter through the city of Frankfurt am Main

No time to visit the IAA? Then Opel can lend a helping hand. For those unable to attend this year’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt (September 12-22), Opel is putting the brand’s world premieres and most important innovations from the exhibition on the road. To mark the occasion of the “world’s most automobile show”, the new Insignia, Insignia Country Tourer, ADAM and Cascada – to name just a few – are being paraded from morning to night on two fully loaded car transporters through Frankfurt’s city center.

The only piece of bad news is that the Monza Concept is not on board. The only single model will remain on the IAA exhibition grounds the whole time. Anyone who wants to see the exciting specimen and get a taste of future Opel models should definitely plan a visit to the Opel booth D09 in hall 8, where visitors are of course able to experience the brand’s other new innovations live and up-close – including the opportunity to test the driver’s seat.

Visitors are greeted by Opel when they arrive at the multi-story car park and the free parking areas where our friendly helpers are handing out booth plans and raffle tickets: One of the tempting prizes is free tickets to the derby between Opel’s partner club Mainz 05 and Eintracht Frankfurt on the Bundesliga’s twelfth day of play.

!NEW! Opel Ampera Electric Vehicle Now At Low Price of 38,300 euros

  • Clear signal: Price reduction gives electric mobility new boost
  • Clear statement: Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann announces E-initiative
  • No compromises: Fully-fledged four-seater without range limitation
Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann at the ZEIT Conference with the Opel Ampera.
The Opel Ampera is unique. No other European electric car can transport four people up to 80 kilometers on pure electric power and more than 500 kilometers in bi-fuel operation without making a stop to re-charge. In the framework of the model offensive that is now in full swing, Opel is making another clear statement and investing in the future of electric mobility. The German automaker is significantly reducing the Ampera’s purchase price in selected markets – as a boost for this environmentally friendly type of mobility that is still not widespread enough. In Germany the innovation leader Opel Ampera is now available from just 38,300 euros, a substantial reduction of 7,600 euros.

Opel is one of the pioneers in trendsetting electric mobility. Since its market launch at the beginning of 2012, Opel has made significant progress with its first electric car. By streamlining series production processes, leveraging savings in components purchasing and maintaining an unwavering commitment to making electric mobility affordable for everyone, Opel is now able to considerably reduce the Ampera’s price. In doing so, the automaker strengthens a new, trendsetting technology – for the general benefit of the customers and much to the delight of the Opel CEO. Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann: “The Opel Ampera was the first electric car on the market from a European manufacturer. With our new pricing, we show our straightforwardness and continue to pursue our strategy for sustainable mobility. We at Opel remain committed to investing in electric propulsion and believe in an emission-free automotive future – not in the future, but today.” The Opel CEO announced this good news today at the ZEIT Congress in Frankfurt, a conference for experts on the subject of mobility of the future.

The Opel Ampera is a fully-fledged, four-seat sedan which can cover up to 80 kilometers on pure electric power, meaning completely emission-free in urban areas. When the 16-kWh lithium battery is charged with electricity from renewable sources, its environmental footprint is impeccable. And when the on-board range extender – a 1.4-liter gasoline engine – is used, the Opel Ampera can cover distances up to 500 kilometers without stopping for a battery re-charge.
