Joins rest of Opel’s domestic lineup at premier auto show in western China
Opel Meriva MPV at Chengdu Motor Show
Opel today introduced the Meriva MPV, the newest member of its China lineup, at the Chengdu Motor Show 2013 – this year’s premier auto show in western China. The innovative, flexible and stylish multi-purpose vehicle will go on sale in Q4 2013.
Opel Products Fleet in China
“Opel has brought several important members from its global product portfolio to China this year,” said Luo Yong, Director of GM China Opel Operations. “This represents our commitment to meet the strong demand for high-quality German-engineered vehicles in a key market for Opel.”
Dynamic Exterior and Easy Rear Access
Opel Meriva MPV
The Meriva’s distinct exterior is characterized by a low, sweeping roofline and Opel’s signature blade side-body motif. Multiple U-shaped curved surfaces add to its dynamic stance. The Meriva also incorporates many of Opel’s signature design elements, such as a front feature line, an outward horizontal grille, and a combination of boomerang-like curved daytime running lights and “eagle-eye” headlamps.
The Meriva offers enhanced back-seat access with its innovative rear-hinged FlexDoors. The full-size doors can open up to 84 degrees, which is much wider than the usual 67 degrees of conventional doors. A high upper doorframe and low doorsill add to the ease of entry to the Meriva.
The MPV has a panoramic glass roof that extends two meters, which makes the whole interior light and airy. It also has a rear window line that is five centimeters lower than the front window line, improving visibility for passengers in back.
Spacious and Reconfigurable Interior
Opel Meriva MPV - AGR seats
Inside, Opel Meriva has a wraparound wing-shaped instrument panel with matte metallic and chrome accents as well as leather amenities with exquisite European-style stitching. Its eight-way adjustable seats, which offer class-leading comfort, received the seal of approval from the Aktion Gesunder Rücken (AGR, Action for Healthy Backs).
Opel Meriva MPV - FlexSpace rear seating system
The interior is spacious. With the Opel Meriva’s innovative FlexSpace rear seating system, the central rear seat can be folded down to serve as a comfortable armrest. The flexible 4:2:4 split-folding rear seats provide a cargo compartment of 400 liters up to 920 liters. Using a simple strap system, the seats can be reconfigured with one hand.
Advanced Powertrain and Safety Features
Opel Meriva is powered by an advanced fuel-efficient 1.4 liter turbocharged engine that delivers maximum power of 88 kW at 4,800-6,000 rpm. The engine is matched with an ActiveSelect® six-speed automatic transmission.
Opel Meriva is also equipped with a series of intelligent safety systems, including the electronic stability program, Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL), and front and rear parking sensors. The ISOFIX system provides a strong link between a child safety seat and the vehicle.
In addition, Opel Meriva has a rigid passenger cell with a state-of-the-art energy-absorbing structure, providing maximum protection to all occupants. Opel Meriva was awarded a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Joining the Meriva at the Chengdu Motor Show 2013 are the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer, Zafira Tourer and Astra GTC – which were launched in China earlier this year – and the Opel Antara. All of the award-winning models are available at Opel dealers nationwide.
Vauxhall’s Hillclimb Team leads class as season reaches final stages
Vauxhall Astra VXR debuts at Prescott Hill Climb
Vauxhall’s assault on the 2013 British Leaders Hillclimb Championship in a completely standard Astra VXR road car is reaping huge rewards for the company, with its drivers running first and second in their class with just three rounds to go.
David Finlay and Alisdair Suttie with Vauxhall Astra VXR
David Finlay and Alisdair Suttie, both motoring journalists from southern Scotland, have campaigned the stock 280PS Astra at hillclimb venues throughout England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, fighting off more powerful – and often highly modified – competition.
Vauxhall Astra VXR at the start line of Prescott Hill Climb
The object of their extended press loan was to prove that grass-roots motorsport was accessible to drivers on very tight budgets, and how well a standard car could perform in competition, yet still be durable and comfortable enough for the daily commute.
Highlights of the championship so far have included not only a class win, but taking the overall class record at the challenging Harewood course in appalling weather conditions. There have also been notable successes at Gurston Down, Burbon and David and Alisdair’s local track at Doune.
The Vauxhall Astra has never had it easy, either. The only cars that have beaten it have been modified, such as an Audi Quattro with 400bhp and a Sierra Cosworth with over 500bhp – but the differences in times have often been into the fractions of a second.
And the cars that the Scottish duo has beaten have included a variety of Porsche 911s, a race-prepared Porsche Boxster, a Nissan 350Z and a TVR Griffith. Not bad for a factory-standard hot-hatch.
‘The Astra has performed brilliantly,’ said David. ‘For a completely standard car it’s punched well above its weight, often to the great surprise of both spectators and rivals.’
And the VXR has also racked over 10,000 miles since David and Alisdair took on the car in April, with the far-from gentle running-in miles not affecting its performance at all. ‘The Astra has been a superbly comfortable and easy-going long distance cruiser for getting to hillclimbs,’ said Alisdair. ‘It hasn’t used a drop of oil, despite the hard racing, and makes the ideal everyday hot hatch to live with. I’m always amazed at the attention the car gets at events, and on the road it’s definitely one the enthusiasts seem to take to heart.’
Vauxhall Astra VXR was launched last year, its 2.0 litre turbocharged engine producing 280PS and 400Nm of torque. Unlike many of its rivals, the VXR uses a sophisticated mechanical limited-slip differential, which provides class-leading traction for a front-wheel drive car, and also offers significant benefits for drivers competing in hillclimbs. Vauxhall Astra VXR costs £27,010.
Opel CEO on traditional tour with Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat
Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann with Opel's legendary "KAD" models: Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat
Opel's "KAD" models are legendary. With the Opel Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat, the German automaker defined the automotive premium class from 1964 to 1977. The three flagships were distinguished by luxurious equipment, sedan-like handling and powerful, majestically gurgling six and eight-cylinder engines. The large Opel models still exude dignity and elegance today.
Especially when the CEO of Adam Opel AG, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, takes them out for a spin through the scenic Rheingau and Taunus regions. The car enthusiast already demonstrated his driving finesse at the Old-timer Grand Prix on the Nürburgring with the Rekord C "Black Widow", a special touring car from the 1960s. On a summer excursion with the "KAD" models, Neumann steered the Opel fleet through villages with enchanting timber-framed houses, picturesque vineyard valley roads and onto romantic Rhine ferries.

Optimal connectivity and stylish travel with innovative Opel ADAM special models
IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control as standard
Individual smartphone looks with black-white contrast
Union of ultra-modern technology and clear, technical design
New Opel ADAM Black Link
The Opel ADAM is not only the individualization champion, it is also the best connected small car on the market. This is again demonstrated by the new Opel ADAM Black Link and Opel ADAM White Link special models, which come with the IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control fitted as standard. Both new models make their debut at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt on the Opel stand D09 in Hall 8 from September 12 – 22. They follow the hugely successful Opel ADAM study with Siri Eyes Free, presented at the Geneva Motor show in the spring. Produced in a limited edition of 2,000 units, Opel ADAM Black Link and White Link variants reflect typical smartphone looks in black or white, with accents in brushed aluminum. They thus embody a perfect blend of ultra-modern infotainment and connectivity technology with clear, technically-inspired design.
New Opel ADAM White Link
“The Opel ADAM Black Link and Opel ADAM White Link models are like a sophisticated smartphone on wheels,” says Tina Müller, Opel Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “From the late fall, we will be offering them with our clever IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control fitted as standard, in combination with a very special smartphone design. In an unconventional way, Opel ADAM combines innovative technologies with countless personalization possibilities which are not available anywhere else to this extent. With these new models, our stylish city car once again shows that it is the best connected small car and a true individualization champion all wrapped up in one.”
New Opel ADAM White Link - Interior with IntelliLink infotainment
Opel ADAM drivers who have an iOS 6 – or later – compatible iPhone can comfortably and safely activate the Siri Eyes Free function via steering wheel controls and operate it with voice commands while keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.
Entertainment and navigation over Siri Eyes Free and Opel FlexDock
To activate Siri in Eyes Free mode, drivers connect their iPhone with IntelliLink via Bluetooth and then press the voice activation button on the steering wheel. Siri Eyes Free can be called up while other apps, such as BringGo Navigation, are running in the background. Music and navigation information is automatically muted during this time. The following functions are available with voice command over Siri Eyes Free:
Telephone calls to saved contacts
Play songs in the iTunes Library and switch between different music sources such as radio and iPod
Listen to, write and send an iMessage or text message to a telephone number or saved contact
Access calendar and add appointments
Siri Eyes Free also provides answers to questions about sports
results or the dates of national holidays, for example. To minimize
distraction from road traffic and increase safety, the iPhone screen
remains dark.
Thanks to Siri Eyes Free, even navigation with Apple Maps is child’s play. Places, addresses and destinations can be entered verbally, without the driver having to look at the IntelliLink screen. The map is shown on the iPhone display mounted in the Opel FlexDock. With the standard FlexDock smartphone set-up in the instrument panel in the ADAM Black Link and White Link, drivers have full access to Siri Eyes Free. In this way they can even ask how close they are to their destination. Another advantage of the Opel FlexDock is that it automatically re-charges the iPhone it’s holding so the battery doesn’t deplete.
The Opel IntelliLink infotainment system features a 7 inch color touchscreen and also includes the Tune-in app for global radio reception, the navigation app BringGo and Stitcher, an app for receiving internet radio podcasts from around the world. The infotainment system is also compatible with Android software-operated devices. This makes the Opel ADAM the most user-friendly and cleverly connected small car on the market. Its unique appeal is also confirmed by real-life use: the latest multi-media test conducted by the German trade magazine Auto Bild (August 2, 2013 issue) names the ADAM with its IntelliLink system as the clear winner ahead of 13 competitors.
Ultra modern technology in technically inspired black-white design Ultra modern iPhone technology and design is mirrored in the looks of the special Opel ADAM Black Link and White Link models. Opel ADAM comes in I’ll be Black or Saturday White Fever exterior colors.
Accentuated contrasts to the rest of the body are provided by brushed, aluminum-look colored side mirror housings and the grille bar carrying the Opel logo in the same look, as well as the tinted rear window and 18-inch wheels in a Twister design with matching wheel clips. An eye-catcher is also the black or white lacquered standard roof spoiler, as well as the characteristically shaped headlamps with LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights. The standard, crisp sport chassis provides lots of driving fun with its direct response.
Inside the cabin, the seats, instruments and applications continue the exterior color scheme. In the ADAM Black Link, all occupants enjoy the comfort of OCIO Black Morrocana seat cushions. While the center console and instrument panel are also black, the door trims, glove box, leather gear knob and handbrake handle are in contrasting bright white and technically inspired Sky Cool Grey. The counterpart to all this is the White Link version, with its own color scheme: the seats are radiant in OCIO White Morrocana, just like elements in the instrument panel and center console.
With innovative technologies, their own specific smartphone design and comprehensive standard equipment, the ADAM Black Link and ADAM White Link can both be ordered from the late fall.
Production of electronic modules for LED headlights fully up and running
New ZKW electronics plant in Wiener Neustadt
ZKW, an Austrian company specialising in automotive lighting systems, has ignited the next stage in its expansion by opening a new electronics competence centre in Wiener Neustadt. After just eight months of construction work, series production of electronic modules for LED headlights began back in May of this year. The first deliveries of now 75,000 controllers followed in June, while a three-shift operation has been in place since July. Some 240,000 modules and 60 skilled jobs are planned by the end of the year. "The new location has extended our product range to include electronic components that are also used in our LED headlights. The LED systems offer the benefits of intelligent light control and daylight-quality light colour", said Hubert Schuhleitner, CEO of the ZKW Group.
With construction work having started in October 2012, the new state-of-the-art plant is now becoming fully operational. The lighting system specialist from Lower Austria is designing and producing electronic LED controllers on a total area of some 15,500 square metres. 3,494 square metres are devoted to production, the laboratory and logistics, while offices are accommodated on 1,042 square metres. In addition to the already fully automated assembly line, two further production systems are planned for the first quarter of 2014. These should allow for the series assembly of printed circuit boards, amongst other things, with sample production for this already in operation. In addition to this, ZKW is developing its own system for high-precision LED placement.
A focus on further growth
ZKW designs and produces high-quality lighting systems for automakers such as Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volvo. The Wieselburg-based company with six locations was able to increase overall sales to EUR 521 million in 2012. Its personnel numbers rose accordingly from 3,378 employees in 2011 to 3,887 by the end of 2012. The company is continuing to recruit skilled workers for its locations. "By opening the new electronics plant in Wiener Neustadt, we are focusing more intensively on pioneering LED technology and considerably expanding this business area. Our goal is to achieve further growth and sales of EUR 602 million in 2013", said. Hubert Schuhleitner, CEO of the ZKW Group.
"The decision to locate ZKW Elektronik GmbH in the ecoplus Business Park Wiener Neustadt is a vote of confidence in Lower Austria as a place of business and technology. Our regional economic policy sets the right priorities and offers a comprehensive service package to companies wishing to locate in Lower Austria or expand their operations there. This strategy is paying off and 52 location and expansion projects have already been agreed since the start of 2013 with the help of ecoplus. This has meant the creation and securing of 785 jobs", said State Minister for Economic Affairs Dr. Petra Bohuslav.
Bold appearance: New design combined with characteristic OPC elements

Detailed readouts: Instrument display with specific engine information
New Opel Insignia OPC Sports Tourer
With 239 kW/325 hp and 435 Nm maximum torque, the Insignia OPC is the ultimate top-of-the-line performer among Opel models. The all-wheel drive model makes its debut with a new, refreshed look and modified chassis at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt (September 12 – 22).
Opel ECOTEC 2.8 V6 Turbo engine with 239 kW/325 hp and 435 Nm max. torque
“The Insignia OPC dazzles with new radiance,” says Michael Ableson, Vice President GME Engineering. “With great attention to detail, our engineers have given it some decisive fine-tuning. This is evident in its design and in its even better driving performance. This puts the OPC squarely in the first league of mid-size series production sports cars.”
Attention to detail – inside and out The new Insignia OPC impresses at first glance. The re-styled front and rear, with signature OPC design elements such as distinctive saber-tooth detailing at the front and the tailpipe trim integrated in the rear, underline its power and evoke visions of high-speed laps around the Nürburgring.
The eye-catching bodywork encapsulates state-of-the-art technology. The OPC chassis is enhanced, with special focus on the re-worked rear axle – as in the other members of the new Opel Insignia family – where engineers have modified around 60 percent of the componentry. In addition, noise and vibration behavior is improved through numerous fine-tuning measures. New ESP software enables even more precise dynamics tuning, especially in reaction to understeer tendencies. Modified damper software for the FlexRide chassis with its adjustable shock absorbers ensures optimum roadholding. This OPC-specific programming improves driving dynamics, allowing a quicker and more precise response to different maneuvers and road conditions.
With six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive, the Opel Insignia OPC sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds (Sports Tourer: 6.3 seconds) and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). In unrestricted specification, the OPC with manual transmission goes on to a maximum speed of 270 km/h (Sports Tourer: 265 km/h). The high performance, Brembo braking system ensures rapid deceleration with maximum stability, even during high-intensity use.
New Opel Insignia OPC - Brembo brakes
In addition, the Insignia OPC benefits from its electronically controlled 4x4 system. The all-wheel drive system incorporates a high-quality clutch, operating on Haldex principles, and an electronic limited-slip differential to ensure superb traction. It constantly adapts to prevailing road conditions and varies torque distribution seamlessly from zero to 100 percent between the front and rear axles, as well as between the rear wheels. In combination with the electronically controlled FlexRide premium chassis, the all-wheel drive system sets standards in terms of reaction time and vehicle control.
New Opel Insignia OPC - FlexRide (active chassis) OPC mode button
Motorsports feeling flows into interior The cabin welcomes OPC drivers with pure motorsport ambience. Recaro performance seats, also optionally available in leather with a memory function, the OPC gearshift knob and a completely new main instrument panel and center console exude premium flair. Beyond basic information, drivers can see specific details like oil pressure and temperature, battery voltage, throttle position, brake power and the g-force resulting from lateral acceleration on the optional, 8-inch instrument readout display.
The new performance steering wheel (optionally heated) features shift levers when it is combined with automatic transmission. This enables the OPC driver to execute extremely quick manual shifts, even when in automatic mode. If the shift levers are then idle for at least 12 seconds, the vehicle continues to drive normally in automatic mode. In this way the new Insignia OPC comfortably combines the advantages of a manual and automatic operation.
Emerald Opel Insignia Sports Tourer BiTurbo first series production car to leave the plant
Opel Insignia Country Tourer as additional model exclusive from Rüsselsheim
Start of series production for the new Opel Insignia: today, the
first model for sale rolled off the assembly line in the Rüsselsheim
plant. The spotlight was on an emerald Insignia Sports Tourer with the
new 2.0 liter BiTurbo CDTI engine with 195 hp.
“This is a moment that we have all been looking forward to, as the
new edition of our flagship that we are officially presenting at the IAA
in September is the next important milestone in our model offensive,”
says Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. The CEO praised the whole team’s
outstanding work. “They put everything they have into this – all their
know-how, all their experience and all their passion.”
With the new Opel Insignia, the 3,300 employees at the Rüsselsheim plant
continue writing a success story that began in October 2008 with the
start of production of the first Insignia generation. Just one year
later European automotive journalists named the Insignia “Car of the
Year”, and many other accolades followed. The Rüsselsheim carmaker is
particularly proud of the flagship’s top ratings for quality. In the
DEKRA Used Car Report 2012, the Insignia came out number one for the
second consecutive time with the fewest errors, again achieving the best
results in the mid-size class. In the GTÜ Used Car Report 2013, it
showed its top class in two categories. It was named the best-quality
car in the mid-size class, not only among one-to-three-year-old cars,
but also in the four-to-five-year-old model category. To date around
600,000 units of the Opel flagship have been built, with the most
important markets being Germany and the United Kingdom.
The new model generation brings more drive to the successful model
line. The entire Insignia portfolio (four-door, five-door, Sports Tourer
and OPC version) has been renewed. The new generation features even
more distinctive design, a new high-quality cockpit and newest
generation infotainment system with intuitive operation. “The
electronics in our flagship’s interior are really impressive. Even very
expensive cars can’t compete here!” says Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.
In addition, the new highly efficient engines set standards in the
mid-size segment – including gasoline and diesel engines with best in
class economy. A new 2.0-liter CDTI engine with six-speed manual
transmission and Start/Stop consumes just 3.7 liters diesel per 100 km
and emits only 99 g/km CO2 (NEDC). And the new 1.4 Turbo gasoline engine needs just 5.2 liters fuel per 100 km with CO2 emissions of 123 g/km.
And a new family member is also in the starting blocks: the Insignia
Country Tourer with all-wheel drive, higher ground clearance and SUV
character. The Country Tourer is exclusively built in the Rüsselsheim
plant like all other Insignia variants.
Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann: “Today Opel has the strongest model
portfolio ever, and the Insignia is a very important part of that. High
quality-standards, attention to detail, and the power to innovate have
resulted in this car.”
Opel ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX is frugal thanks to Bi-fuel LPG powertrain
Innovative digital driving range indicator directly in driver’s line of vision
New Opel ADAM LPG version available ex works from Eisenach plant for first time
With ADAM LPG Opel now has ten LPG models in portfolio
New Opel ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX
The trendy Opel ADAM now also comes as an LPG variant. With this, the small urban car that can be custom-designed also increases its powertrain options. The new Opel ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX is optimized for operation with LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), but can also run on gasoline – the driver can have the remaining driving range readout shown on the digital instrument display at any time.
In LPG operation, the 64 kW/87 hp ADAM consumes just 6.9 liters per 100 km (112 g/km CO2 emissions). Compared to a similarly powerful gasoline engine, fuel costs are around 50 percent lower !
New Opel ECOTEC 1.4 LPG Engine
In addition, the ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX is the first Opel ex works LPG model to roll off the assembly line in Eisenach. Prices start at 16,150 euros (RRP incl. VAT in Germany).
With the ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX, Opel expands its LPG fleet to ten models: the Corsa (three and five-door), Astra (five-door and Sports Tourer), Meriva and Zafira Tourer as well as the new Insignia (four and five-door sedans, Sports Tourer) are already available as Bi-fuel LPG versions.
Extended range with Bi-fuel propulsion concept
The 1.4-liter ecoFlex engine was optimized for operation with liquefied gas. For the LPG variant, engineers reinforced the valves and valve seats and correspondingly adapted engine management. All LPG-specific components including the LPG gas tank designed exclusively for the ADAM were integrated particularly deeply in the vehicle. The goal was to achieve maximum LPG range without compromising on the variety of variants. Thanks to the space-saving installation of the LPG tank under the vehicle floor in the rear, full luggage compartment capacity is also preserved. The additional LPG tank holds up to 35 liters. With that alone, the Opel ADAM covers around 500 km in the combined cycle. In bi-fuel mode with activated gasoline tank, up to 1,200 km are possible.
New Opel ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX - Innovative driving range indicator
The innovative driving range indicator is directly in the driver’s line of vision on the instrument panel and shows gasoline, LPG and total driving range. So the driver always knows what distance can be covered with which fuel. Moving between LPG and gasoline operation is seamless and takes place either automatically or by pressing a switch on the instrument panel. A control lamp then shows LPG operation; as soon as gasoline mode takes over, the lamp goes off. The filler neck for the liquefied gas is directly next to the gasoline filler neck and Opel includes the adapter to enable filling up across Europe.

New Opel ADAM 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX - assembly line in Eisenach
For the first time, an LPG model is completely produced in the Opel plant in Eisenach. The gas system equipment ex-factory has important advantages over retrofit options. The topic of safety is a particularly high priority in plants developments. The Opel checklist, for example, includes special crash tests for the gas tank and other components located in the collision-protected areas that are also optimally integrated in the vehicle’s safety structure. The tank features a special protective cover that encloses the container on the ADAM’s underfloor. So customers get their LPG vehicle with modern technology and typical high Opel quality ex works – including reliability, manufacturer’s warranty and maximum safety.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is attractive alternative for environment and budget
More and more fuel stations offer LPG Europe-wide. Especially Turkey, Poland, Belgium, Ireland, Italy and the Netherland are very well equipped
Many customers in Germany and Europe value LPG propulsion as an attractive alternative – which is no wonder with a fuel price of around half of that of super unleaded. The government grants a tax bonus up to 2018 for LPG. But it’s not only customers’ wallets that benefit, so does the environment. LPG models emit up to 15 percent less carbon dioxide and up to 80 percent less nitrogen oxide than cars with comparable conventional propulsion. In Germany, the fuel is available at over 6,500 filling stations, which means at almost every second one. In Europe, around 12 million LPG vehicles fill up at over 35,000 filling stations equipped with LPG.
LPG adds one more to countless ADAM variants
With the option to now also fill up with LPG instead of gasoline, the ADAM more than measures up to its reputation as the individualization champion. The urban lifestyle car offers more than 61,000 equipment options for the exterior and nearly 82,000 for the interior – more personalization possibilities than any other car in this class – from numerous color combinations and wheel variants with unique wheel clips to a roof liner with LED stars. In the interior, the ADAM features high-tech innovations like the IntelliLink system that is compatible with both iPhones and Android smartphones. It makes the Opel ADAM the best-connected small car and supports SIRI Eyes Free voice control for the iPhone.

Visionary: Monza Concept gives outlook for Opel brand strategy at IAA
Efficient: Perfect use of space, lightweight design, innovative powertrains
Connected: Revolutionary infotainment with LED projection technology
Inspiring: Monza Concept shows new interpretation of sculptural Opel design
A light, athletic look outside, unique projection technology inside
combined with custom connectivity and modular design that enables
sustainable propulsion systems par excellence – the Opel Monza Concept
is stylish, ultra-modern efficiency on four wheels. It is the role-model
for the next generation of Opel cars. The groundbreaking concept car
makes its world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in
Frankfurt from September 12 - 22 (press days: September 10 - 11) and
shows what people can expect from Opel in the future.
“The Monza Concept represents the Opel car of tomorrow”, says Opel
CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “On one hand, it embodies everything that
already characterizes Opel – German precision combined with innovative
technologies wrapped in captivating design. In addition, it addresses
the themes that will be the development-focus of the next generation of
Opel cars: maximum connectivity and optimum efficiency.”
“Connectivity is demonstrated by a trailblazing LED projection
technology for instrument and infotainment displays. Efficiency comes in
many ways, with lightweight design, optimal use of interior space, and
advanced powertrain technology. The Monza Concept is based on increasing
electrification of the automobile in everyday driving, from
range-extender to fuel cell. And as far as styling is concerned, we are
expressing pure efficiency in a new, lean and athletic interpretation of
our typical sculptural shapes. The Opel Monza Concept is nothing less
than our vision of the automotive future.”
Lightness: Styling conveys athletic efficiency rather than pure muscle power
An Opel Monza already made its world premiere at the IAA back in
1977: it was a large coupé with a silky smooth-running six-cylinder
engine. The Monza was in production until 1986 and has long since
belonged to the elite circle of iconic cars. The new Monza Concept now
follows in its wheel-tracks: The beautifully shaped hood with the
distinctive center fold continues the tradition of the Monza front with
the typical Opel crease. The large boomerang shaped air intakes in front
of the wheel arches complement the elegant chrome bar that proudly
holds the brand logo.
With the Opel Monza Concept, the designers in Mark Adams’ team introduce a
new interpretation of the sculptural design that first went into
production with the Opel Insignia. Selected distinctive lines, high-precision
design and perfect sweeping contours remain the core of the evolving
design philosophy called “Sculptural artistry meets German precision.”
But a new, athletic allure demonstrates the car’s overall efficiency.
“This is the next bold step along our journey into the future, but at
the same time we show that we have established a consistent design in
which people can build trust”, says Mark Adams, Head of Opel Design.
The sculptural surfaces of the 4.69 meter-long, four seat Opel Monza
Concept are modeled after ocean waves lapping on the shore. These
flowing surfaces give a look of lightness, dramatically underlined by
the side-sills that taper off in front of the rear wheel arches. This
unique styling element is inspired by the lean physique and slim waist
of a greyhound dog, running as if on tip-toes with powerful elegance.
The design of the Opel Monza Concept’s body sides enables easy entry and
egress for front and rear-seat passengers, while underscoring the
prominent, sporty rear wheel arches, which share the same width as the
front.
The Opel Monza Concept’s roof line is particularly sophisticated – at
first it runs in a semicircular form like a classic coupé’s, but then
just before reaching the tailgate it sweeps slightly upwards. In spite
of its sporty look and flat silhouette with a height of just 1.31
meters, there is neither loss of space in the luggage compartment – 500
liters in volume – nor constrained headroom for the passengers. This is
due to the fact that the whole cockpit structure is around 15
centimeters lower than in conventional models. Actually, the
Opel Monza
Concept offers the same airy passenger compartment as a mid-size car.
The expansive doors provide maximum functionality with spectacular
views when opening. They swing up like the outstretched wings of a

Connectivity: Efficient and well-connected into the automotive future
Efficiency and connectivity are the main focus of development in
focus for next generation of Opel models. The Opel Monza Concept offers a
fascinating preview of these developments. Once behind the wheel, the Opel Monza Concept whisks you away into a completely new and unique world of
instruments and infotainment. The original Opel Monza was also way ahead of
its time 35 years ago with a digital display in the cockpit.
The Opel Monza Concept continues innovating with state-of-the-art LED
projection technology. Drivers no longer find the conventional
individual, separate monitors that display different information;
instead, they face a wide, sculpted dashboard that sweeps from door to
door, and is used as a single projection surface. Information and
decorative elements are displayed on the surface, which the driver can
customize according to his needs, taste or mood. A total of 18 LED
projectors create a continuous, adaptable multi-functional display. This
is a world premiere in an automobile. Already established in the events
arena, this technology has caused a sensation at major occasions such
as Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee, and Opel designers were first to think of
implementing it in a passenger car. The 3D graphics are impressive, and
reflect all important functions from precise vehicle and driver
information to internet and communication options as well as decorative
elements. Both the area displaying information and the background can be
individually configured, and operation is via voice control and
steering wheel controls.
Efficiency and clarity are also priorities here: when it came to how
the displays present information, Opel engineers focused on the best and
most personal way to make relevant data available to the driver. The
approach was “simplifying the multitude” and so details on the car, the
navigation and the smartphone settings and connection only appear when
necessary or desired. So drivers can use a wide range of information
without being overwhelmed by text or images. This also makes the Monza
Concept a model of future HMI (Human-Machine-Interface) systems, as its
interior design is based on latest research findings in this field.
This also applies to the comprehensive smartphone connectivity in the Opel Monza Concept. With three worlds of connectivity – called ME, US and ALL
– drivers can focus solely on their driving experience, or get in touch
with friends and family or even connect to the whole internet
community. With ME the infotainment system virtually
disconnects the drivers’ smartphone and prioritizes the information
relevant for the driving experience. US enables the
passengers of the Opel Monza Concept to connect with a group of selected
people such as friends and family members: these can log-in to the car’s
infotainment system with their own communication device and exchange
information, music and images, chat and make appointments, etc. ALL goes beyond US.
It allows the driver and virtually the whole outside world to connect.
Drivers can for example spontaneously share their planned route online
over a tablet or smartphone so that people can catch a ride with them
along the way – enabling a new kind of instant car-sharing. With this
trailblazing infotainment and connectivity technology, the Monza Concept
shows how far ahead Opel designers and engineers are thinking, so that
the next generation of cars make their contribution to a harmonious,
connected society
The trendsetting sensor and connectivity technology in the Monza
Concept has even more to offer: it gives a preview of the advancements
in “Car-to-Car” and “Car-to-X” systems – prerequisites for future
autonomous driving and areas in which the research department at Opel is
already intensively working. By comprehensively connecting road users,
intercommunication can be enhanced, as can safety, because dangerous
traffic situations are registered earlier and more accurately than
before.
Flexibility: Modular design for powertrain-diversity
The Monza Concept is based on a modular design to allow
highest-possible flexibility when selecting a propulsion system. A
variety of sustainable powertrains based on increasing electrification
of the automobile are conceivable. For the Monza Concept to be displayed
at the Frankfurt show, engineers conceived an electric drive with a CNG
(Compressed Natural Gas) range extender – a further development of the
Ampera’s pioneering technology. The new-generation three-cylinder 1.0
SIDI turbo – which also makes its premiere at the IAA – takes over the
task as range extender. But it does so with natural gas instead of
gasoline, further improving the car’s CO2 footprint. With its
visionary approach, Opel continues to combine the potential of electric
propulsion with the benefits of the internal combustion engine.
“We have a clear vision of how Opel cars will be in the future, and
we have a clear strategy of how we will achieve this goal. The Opel Monza
Concept gives this strategy an unmistakable identity,” says Dr.
Karl-Thomas Neumann. “It embodies what our customers can expect from us
within the next years; not only in terms of design, but also in terms of
efficiency and connectivity between drivers and the internet community.
So it already anticipates future everyday automotive life, and serves
as an important source of inspiration on the road to that destination –
and not just for Opel.”
