Dutch royal couple’s visit to Rüsselsheim carries on tradition
When the Dutch royal couple Willem-Alexander and Máxima visit Opel in Rüsselsheim on June 4th
as the head of a business delegation, the main topic of the day will be
the future of mobility. The royal couple will meet with Opel experts,
discuss electric mobility and visit the design center. Tradition also
plays a large role in the connection between Opel and the Netherlands;
the ties are many.
Opel is getting ready for the visit of the royal couple from the
Netherlands and is presenting the new Cascada convertible in orange. Next to
the Cascada a vintage Opel Diplomat in front of the Adam Opel Haus.
Did you know that:
The first Opel dealerships opened their doors in the Netherlands in
1924 and Opel has been one of the most popular brands in the country
ever since
The most popular Opel model in Holland at this moment is the Corsa, followed by Astra and Mokka
Opel sponsors the Dutch soccer club Feyenoord Rotterdam which has an
ex-national player, Ronald Koeman, as a trainer and last season
finished 3rd in the First Division
Today around 850,000 Opel vehicles are on Dutch roads – the second biggest total fleet in the Netherlands.
A member of the Dutch royal family already visited Opel in
Rüsselsheim. In October 2010 King Willem-Alexander’s cousin, Prinz
Maurits, came to learn more about the future of electric mobility and
test drove the Opel Ampera and the HydroGen 3.
The ADAM store in Amsterdam was completely decorated in orange during King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima’s enthronement?
The Netherlands is a trailblazer in electric mobility. The
government has introduced an incentive program that also includes tax
benefits.
Today almost 10,000 electric cars are on Holland’s roads – which
makes the Netherlands leading in Europe when it comes to introducing
electric mobility
In 2012, almost 4,000 new electric vehicles were registered in the
Netherlands, thereof around 2,700 Opel Ampera. That means around 67
percent market share in the last year.
Since its start of sales the Opel Ampera has been market leader in
the Netherlands. More Ampera were sold there than in any other European
country.
The several historic Opel clubs in the Netherlands have several
thousands of members. There are many clubs, for a lot of Opel models,
including the Kadett, Manta and GT.
There are currently 26 Dutch employees in Rüsselsheim. They are of
course especially looking forward to the royal couple’s visit.
104,800 test kilometers without the slightest technical problem
Best car ever tested in highly competitive compact class
Driving comfort and long-distance performance impress the editors
Opel Astra Sports Tourer 2.0 CDTI
The respected trade journal auto motor und sport will publish
the results of its endurance test with the Opel Astra Sports Tourer CDTI
in tomorrow’s issue (12/2013). In the test article the author writes,
“In terms of reliability, it completed the 100,000 km distance with
flying colors and confidently stormed its way to the top of the defects
index hit list for its class, easily claiming the number one position.
Touché!“
The compact station wagon went into service for the Stuttgart editors
on April 21, 2011 and covered exactly 104,800 test kilometers. During
this time, the 2.0-liter diesel Astra only went into the garage for
scheduled maintenance visits. In the summary, auto motor und sport thus
certified the Sports Tourer’s especially high level of quality: “After
almost two years and 100,000 demanding kilometers, the Astra Sports
Tourer had no defects and only slight signs of wear. Opel deserves a lot
of praise for that.”
The editorial office has a highest ranking list of all endurance
tests. In the compact class, the Opel Astra Sports Tourer is now at the
top, ahead of the VW Golf, the Mercedes A class and the Toyota Prius.
Opel was the only car that did not need to make a non-scheduled garage
visit during the long-term test. In contrast, the second-place car had
to be repaired three times. With a defects index 2, the Astra Sports
Tourer also achieves the second-best value ever of all cars tested by auto motor und sport. So fittingly the endurance test was headlined “Opel, the most reliable”.
Opel brand values precision, efficiency, reliability
With this headline, auto motor und sport alludes to the slogan
“Opel the reliable” used for the first time in 1936. The German
automaker advertised its products like this until the early 1980s. Now
this key phrase is again the focus of the QUALITY!2022 strategy, in
which Opel has set itself the goal of becoming better with each new
product in order to be an industry leader in quality by 2022. Not only
the Opel Astra Sports Tourer endurance test result impressively confirms
that Opel is on the right track. The number of warranty claims for new
passenger cars has also fallen by 50 percent since 2000.
Vice President GM Europe for Quality Thomas Simon is very pleased
with the Opel Astra’s spotless endurance test result. “Our quality
offensive is in full swing – and it’s obviously a real success. Now we
want to go a step further. Typical Opel values are precision, efficiency
and reliability. These obligate us to develop and build all new vehicle
generations, bodies and powertrains in the best-possible quality.”
First-class driving comfort ensures best long-distance performance Quality is not only apparent in technical reliability, but also in everyday suitability. auto motor und sport describes
this in the Astra endurance test as follows: “You get into the car and
immediately feel perfectly at home in it.” The reasons listed for this
include the excellent seats, great suspension comfort, large luggage
compartment capacity and the powerful yet economical diesel engine with
350 Nm torque. So all told, the editors see a “convincing touring car”
in the Sports Tourer that also gets plus points for good traction and
effective heating in the winter. The author summarizes, “The Astra shows
its best side on long journeys.”
Unlimited variants: Individualization champion also suitable as First Responder car
Long tradition: Opel models saving lives since early 20th century
Right-of-way for safety: Opel has had own professional plant fire brigade since 1911
New Opel ADAM Fire First Responder Concept and Opel Blitz Fire truck
The Opel ADAM is the absolute individualization champion – privately
and in future, maybe also for the fire department. The bold urban car
now also shows its suitability for rescue services as a speedy fire
brigade vehicle. The series production Opel ADAM offer encompasses 12
body colors and three additional combinable roof colors – as a fire
brigade study it comes exclusively in red-white signal colors. The small
lifestyle car continues the tradition of Opel lifesavers – which
started over 100 years ago in the form of the “Doctor’s Car” – in an
unconventional way.
New Opel ADAM Fire First Responder Concept
Fire brigade first responder Opel ADAM: Safety down to the smallest detail
Opel Special Vehicles GmbH transformed the stylish urban Opel ADAM
into a spectacular fire brigade first responder vehicle. The study
sporting red-white applications of the emergency number 112 clearly
visible on the hood, side doors and trunk lid as well as special alarm
signals on the roof and two LED front flashing lights is a real
attention-getter. In addition, the fire brigade ADAM features an
interior push-pull-rotary alarm switch as well as a portable Tetra
two-way radio in a holder on the center console. The special-use
equipment joins high-tech innovations like the IntelliLink infotainment
system that is compatible with iPhones and Android smartphones, and that
makes the ADAM the best connected small car. The multi-award winning
newcomer also features equipment and technology options including fully
automatic park assist, heated steering wheel in combination with heated
front seats, blind spot alert, hands-free docking station for
smartphones called FlexDock, 18” wheels featuring red-white color clips
and LED daytime running lights.
An especially practical detail of the fire brigade ADAM is in the
rear: a special design by the company Bösenberg ensures that emergency
backpack, defibrillator, fire extinguisher and fire helmet stay securely
in place even during high-speed travel on rescue calls.
Life saver with the blitz: Rescue services vehicles have long tradition at Opel
At just under 3.7 meters in length and with a host of innovative
technologies, the agile urban car ADAM is ideal as a first responder
vehicle in heavy city traffic. It leads Opel rescue services vehicles
into the future while continuing an over 100 year-long tradition of Opel
cars for emergency services.
The first example of this was the “Opel 4/8 hp” from 1909. There was
good reason the two-seater was soon known under the name “Doctor’s Car”.
Smaller and more agile than conventional cars, it could maneuver much
more easily in narrow streets – very useful for doctors, who could thus
get to their patients easier and faster.
The importance of professional rescue personnel and the corresponding
equipment was something the automaker found out for itself just two
years later. In 1911 a big fire destroyed large parts of the Rüsselsheim
plant. As a direct result, a professional Opel fire brigade which
supported the existing volunteer fire department was established and the
“motorized fire pump” was developed for the plant fire brigade. Opel
set new technical standards with its first models. The fire brigade
vehicles quickly gained both national and international customers’
attention. A famous example of the brand’s rescue vehicles is the Opel
Blitz. Various chassis layouts built the basis for personnel transport
vehicles carrying up to nine occupants as well as for fire-extinguishing
tank trucks.
In 1952 a new Blitz was developed, and due to its popularity with
fire fighters it quickly became market leader. Its lively and, if
necessary, overloadable carburetor engine was extremely robust. For some
smaller fire departments the fire truck 8 based on the Opel Blitz 1.75 t
was their first motor vehicle – many of these models stayed in service
until well into the 1980s.
Today Opel subsidiary Opel Special Vehicles GmbH (OSV) builds special
vehicles for police, ambulance and fire brigades from series production
cars. These range from tailor-made Astra five-door and Sport Tourer
versions, Insignia Sports Tourer, Corsa, Antara and the Zafira family to
the spacious compact van Zafira Tourer. Together with certified
conversion partners, the Opel models Vivaro and Movano are also
available as multi-utility, crew, emergency medical services and small
fire-extinguishing vehicles.
Comfort and efficiency are paramount virtues of compact vans
Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CNG Turbo wins Taxi of the Year 2013
The Opel Zafira Tourer is the ideal taxi. When choosing the "Taxi of the Year 2013," to bring the elegant and spacious Opel compact van in two evaluation criteria the winner's trophy: The Opel Zafira Tourer1.6 CNG Turbo ecoFLEX (CNG= Compressed Natural Gas) wins in the compact and mid-size vans economical car, in addition, he has been voted the most comfortable member of his profession.
Eleven automakers, with a total of 19 models at Europe's largest taxi-comparison test of the journal "taxi today" in Fulda at the start. Taxi operators from all over Germany tested the vehicles for two days in the points cost, functionality, comfort and emotion through their paces.
Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CNG Turbo - CNG gas tank storage
With a consumption of just 4.7 kg H gas per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle of 110 kW/150 hp Opel Zafira Tourer1.6 CNG Turbo ecoFLEX emits only 129 grams of CO2 per kilometer - values that are just for the environment as expected for the taxi company. Due to the low fuel thirst and a tank volume of 25 kg as a range of 530 kilometers in pure natural gas is in it - without time-consuming refueling stops. In addition to the cost of a taxi operator counts above all the comfort for the guests. Here the variable Opel compact van shines with either AGR-certified ergonomic seats for driver and front passenger, an extraordinary degree of flexibility is guaranteed by the Flex 7 seating system plus with exclusive lounge function. So that the driver can be used with little effort to address the individual needs of its passengers and the carriage of passengers in the second row enjoy as much space as never before. The Opel Zafira Tourer is a taxi model from 20,630 euros (RRP excluding VAT in Germany).
Opel-Exclusive bicycle carrier system available for nine model variants
Second generation of rear bicycle carrier now also for newcomers ADAM and Mokka
Sophisticated construction ensures simple, back-friendly operation
Trunk space and access remain undisturbed even when bikes are mounted on carrier
Up to 20 percent fuel savings compared to roof rack systems
Opel ADAM with second-generation FlexFix bike carrier
Opel’s fully integrated FlexFix bicycle carrier system makes taking
your own bike with you on vacation a breeze. Families and active
vacationers can transport up to four bicycles on their trip – with
FlexFix it’s easy, space-saving and safe. Opel offers the patented
system for nearly all models ranging from the Astra, Corsa, Antara and
Meriva all the way to the “Lounge on Wheels” Zafira Tourer. The newest
members of the FlexFix club are the sub-compact Mokka SUV and the urban
lifestyle car ADAM.
Opel Corsa with FlexFix bike carrier
Opel is the only automaker to offer this user-friendly transport
system that is fully integrated in the rear of the vehicle and so is
always on board. The bicycle carrier can be effortlessly pulled out and
disappears invisibly back into the rear bumper when not in use. It is
always ready to use everywhere, for instance to pick up the children and
their bikes when they get caught in an unexpected rainstorm. Another
major advantage of the second-generation FlexFix system is that even
when fully loaded, it can be tilted so that the tailgate of the vehicle
can be opened easily. So the luggage compartment remains easily
accessible, even with four bikes mounted on the rear of the car.
Opel Astra 5-door with FlexFix bike carrier
Second-generation FlexFix – Bicycle vacation with the whole family
The second-generation Opel FlexFix system for the versatile compact
Astra Sports Tourer station wagon and the compact Zafira Tourer van can
carry up to four bikes, while for the sub-compact Mokka SUV it can
transport up to three bicycles. The enhanced Opel FlexFix system offers
increased load capacity: the first and second bikes can now weigh up to
30 kilograms each (previously 20 kilograms max.), which is also
practical for transporting most e-bikes. Even the chic urban car ADAM
can carry a bicycle weighing up to 30 kg, and with an additional adapter
a second bike for the ADAM co-driver.
Opel Astra ST with second-generation FlexFix bike carrier
Opel Zafira Tourer MPV with second-generation FlexFix bike carrier
On larger Opel models, the second-generation FlexFix is available
with an extension kit including a clip-on adaptor so that a further two
bicycles up to 20 kilograms each can be transported. The entire loading
capacity is 80 kilograms (Mokka: 60 kg). Special holders with rubber
inlays ensure that the bikes are held securely in place.
Opel Mokka SUV with second-generation FlexFix bike carrier
Flexible, easy, back-friendly – exceptional Opel technology
With FlexFix Opel remains the only car maker to offer a bicycle
carrier system that is fully integrated and always on board. The
user-friendly bicycle carrier is very easy to operate as it can be
adjusted by hand without the need to use tools, and offers a host of
practical functions. When not in use it disappears invisibly into the
rear bumper like a drawer. This is another example of typical onboard
flexibility á la Opel.
Opel Antara SUV with FlexFix bike carrier
Another big plus point of the Opel FlexFix system is its outstanding
ergonomics. In contrast to other systems such as roof racks where you
have to twist and lift the bicycle high over your head, the FlexFix
carrier is located close to the ground, making cumbersome lifting
superfluous and mounting bicycles on your car nearly effortless and
back-friendly. The back experts at Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. (AGR –
Campaign for Healthy Backs) praised this when they awarded their highly
coveted seal of approval to the Meriva for its overall ergonomic concept
including the FlexFix carrier. The Meriva was the first production car
in the world to receive this distinction.
Opel Meriva MPV with FlexFix bike carrier
Studies have shown that additional fuel consumption with bicycles
mounted on the rear is around 20 percent lower than when they are
mounted on the vehicle’s roof. So the integrated Opel FlexFix system
saves fuel costs while it reduces impact on the environment. In contrast
to those with roof rack systems, the vehicle is not subject to a 120
km/h speed limit, as the bikes are stored at the rear. This stable
arrangement is particularly secure during a sharp braking maneuver or an
impact. If a park pilot is on board and the gearbox in reverse, an
acoustic signal warns the driver that the bicycle carrier is still fully
extended.
The prices for the FlexFix carrier start at 420 euros in the
five-door Astra, at 590 euros in the Corsa and Meriva and 650 euros in
the Antara. The newly enhanced FlexFix system can be purchased for 570
euros for the Astra Sports Tourer, for 590 euros for the ADAM and Mokka
and for 790 euros for the Zafira Tourer. The adaptor kit which provides
space for a third and fourth bicycle with the new system is available
from 106.50 euros (all prices RRP in Germany including VAT). The
integrated FlexFix system often costs less than other rear bike carriers
that also need a trailer hitch as a base.

in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, diminishing impact on the environment and drivers’ wallets.
Opel ECOTEC 1.6 SIDI Turbo engine
With Start/Stop technology and a six-speed manual transmission, the
Astra five-door and sedan 1.6 SIDI Turbo models have an NEDC combined
fuel consumption of just 5.9 l/100 km and emit only 139 g/km CO2.
The five-door Astra 1.6 SIDI Turbo accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in
just 8.7 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 220 km/h, while the
sedan achieves two km/h more. Both variants also boast impressive
elasticity in fifth gear, with acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h in just
8.8 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than the predecessor model.
The new Astra Sports Tourer 1.6 SIDI Turbo also easily joins the
ranks of exemplary performers: it accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h (fifth
gear) in nine seconds – 1.5 seconds faster than the previous 1.6 Turbo
model– and from zero to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds, with a maximum speed of
220 km/h. The flexible Opel station wagon consumes 6.1 l/100km (NEDC
combined) and emits 144 g/km CO2.
Music to the ears: Running smoothness par excellence
Strong pulling power, exemplary elasticity and excellent running
refinement were the key development objectives for the new 1.6 SIDI
Turbo. To achieve low overall levels of radiated noise and vibration,
engineers optimized the induction and exhaust systems. This included
decoupling the cam cover from the cylinder head via specific fasteners
and the sealing system. In spite of direct injection and pulsed
combustion, engineers were able to substantially reduce noise levels
compared to the previous engine. As a result of these
‘sound-engineering’ measures, occupants of the new Astra 1.6 SIDI models
will appreciate quiet, smooth idling and a pleasant sound quality even
at high road speeds, engine speeds and loads.
Opel Management Board Member for Engineering Mike Ableson says,
“Following the introduction of the all-new 1.6 SIDI Turbo in the Cascada
and Zafira Tourer, we are now delighted to make this state-of-the-art
engine available for our customers in our best seller, the Astra, in
three very popular body styles. With this powerful and quiet
new-generation Turbo, we are heading towards the top of the class –
three times over with the five-door Astra, the Astra sedan and the Astra
Sports Tourer.”
The new 1.6 SIDI Turbo gasoline engine is the start of Opel’s huge
powertrain offensive. Through 2016, the automaker will introduce three
completely new engine families and 13 new engines. Many new
transmissions will also be introduced in the same time frame. As a
result, Opel will renew 80 percent of its engine portfolio within the
next four years.
