!NEW! Opel Cascada - First of its kind

  • First mid-size convertible engineered and built by Opel
  • Opel exclusive mid-size convertibles popular in the 60s

Heading to the top of Opel’s line-up, the Cascada is a mid-size convertible not only by size (length: 4.70 m) but also by its allure and the premium technologies and features it offers. With its elongated, elegant silhouette and streamlined soft-top, the Opel Cascada – due to debut in early March at the Geneva Motor Show – relates to the timeless tradition of classic convertibles. But it’s the first of its kind for Opel: this is the first time in 70 years that Opel has developed a mid-size convertible and will produce it in its own facilities.

The most popular convertibles from Opel in the last decades were affordable compact Kadett and Astra models – from the 1976 Kadett C Aero and 1987 E Cabrio up to three generations of Astra between 1993 and 2010.

With the ambitious Cascada, Opel actually relates in a new, refreshing way and with the best of modern technologies to an older and somewhat exclusive tradition of four-seat soft-top convertibles from the fifties and sixties like the Kapitän and the Rekord.

1953 Opel Kapitän convertible

1964 Opel Rekord A convertible

However, most of these bigger convertibles were not built by Opel, but converted and sold in very limited quantities by specialized German coachbuilders such as Autenrieth or Karl Deutsch. Outsourcing convertible production was a common practice at the time.

1967 Opel Rekord C convertible by Karl Deutsch
In the mid-80s, Opel’s dealer Keinath, based in Dettingen, started building a convertible conversion of the Monza coupé. Fairly similar to the Cascada today, the Opel Monza KC 5 convertible was just about 4.70 meters long, sat four persons and could feature quite a luxurious leather interior.

1985 Opel Monza KC 5 convertible
More currently, the Kadett E Cabrio and two Astra Cabrio generations were also produced externally by the Italian coachbuilder Carozzeria Bertone.

A mid-size convertible, the new Opel Cascada is in territory otherwise exclusive to premium manufacturers. True to Opel values, it offers open-air elegance, standard premium chassis, safety and soft-top technologies as well as a new generation powertrain at a much more attractive price than any other mid-size convertible.

!NEW! Lightning fast start for Opel ADAM: Over 20,000 orders and counting

New small car from Eisenach making a splash with design, variety and technology

Just one week after the Opel ADAM market launch, orders from all across Europe for the chic, urban car have already exceeded 20,000 – with most of them placed in Germany.

Deputy Chairman of the Opel Management Board Dr. Thomas Sedran says, “This is an outstanding start for our new small lifestyle car from Eisenach – especially if one considers that the market launch in many European markets is yet to come. The ADAM sparks excitement and is a popular new ambassador for our brand.”

The ADAM success story started with its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October 2012. Even at this early stage, readers of Auto Zeitung chose the ADAM as the Number One City Car for the Auto Trophy. In the magazine Auto Motor und Sport’s “The Best Cars of 2013” poll, the small Opel came out ahead of all its direct competitors in the lifestyle segment.

One of the ADAM’s major plus points is its diversity. There is no other car in this class in the world that can offer more than 61,000 variants for the exterior and nearly 82,000 for the interior – ranging from a vast selection of colors and rims to special details like different headliners. Dr. Sedran: “Whoever orders an ADAM today can be quite certain that he/she won’t see an identical car. Almost every ADAM will be unique.”

The car’s new clever and affordable technology features are also grabbing buyers’ attention. The IntelliLink infotainment system makes the ADAM the best connected small car, as it integrates the owner’s smartphone (Apple iOS and Android) in the vehicle. Soon it will also be available with the innovative Apple voice recognition software SIRI Eyes Free. The lifestyle car also offers a spectacular selection of innovations that to date were only familiar from higher classes, if at all. Unique in the segment are for example a newest-generation Automatic Park Assist (APA), heated steering wheel, Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA) and the Opel-exclusive, fully integrated rear bicycle carrier FlexFix.

Opel’s multibillion euro model offensive continues. The next newcomer, the elegant Cascada convertible, is already in the starting blocks and will be at dealerships in the first half of this year. From 2012 to 2016 Opel will introduce a total of 23 new vehicles and 13 new engines to the market.

!NEW! 1.6 liter Turbo Diesel engine continues powertrain renewal at Opel

  • New family of four cylinder,  1.6 liter ECOTEC Turbo Diesel engines
  • Class leading refinement, high power / torque density
  • Fuel consumption reduced by up to 10 percent
  • Compliant with future Euro 6 emissions requirements

Opel continues the fundamental renewal of its powertrain portfolio with an all-new four cylinder, turbo diesel engine. The second family of new downsized power units to be introduced after the gasoline 1.6 liter SIDI ECOTEC, the 1.6 liter CDTI ECOTEC diesels will replace existing 1.7 liter engines and certain lower powered versions of the 2.0 liter range.

Featuring closed loop combustion control and an aluminum block, the new 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC is the first diesel from Opel to comply with future Euro 6 emissions requirements. The engine will be available in a variety of power outputs across several carlines.

Class leading attenuation of noise, vibration and harshness, high power/torque density and low fuel consumption were the main development objectives. Initially maximum power and torque have been increased versus the 1.7 liter engine to 100 kW/136 hp and 320 Nm respectively, while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 10 % compared with similarly powerful 2.0 liter diesels.

“The comprehensive renewal of our powertrain portfolio continues at wide-open throttle,” said Dr. Thomas Sedran, Deputy Chairman of the Opel Management Board. “Our new 1.6 liter diesel will set benchmarks for refinement, performance and environmental compatibility. By the end of this year we will have launched three all-new generations of gasoline and diesel engines, as part of our roll-out of 23 new models and 13 new powertrains by 2016.”

The new 1.6 liter diesel and its innovative engine control unit have been entirely developed in-house by a global team of engineers in Turin, Ruesselsheim and the USA. This approach has enabled a comprehensive system optimization from the very beginning of the design process. Beginning in spring, the 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC will be manufactured at the same “flex plant” as the new 1.6 liter gasoline engine, in Szentgotthard in Hungary.
