!NEW! Opel Corsa OPC Rallye Cup: Wolfram Doberer wins and secured the vice-title

A mud fight at the finale of the Opel Corsa OPC Rallye Cup: Wolfram Doberer wins and secured the vice-title, many failures!
  • Extreme Conditions like rain, fog, snow and mud in the forest district
  • Wolfram Doberer and his "Casting-Co" Joseph Hauer get the vice-champion title
  • Christoph Leitgeb finishes second, Gerhard Dworak third, three teams dropped out
Wolfram Doberer wins and secured the vice-title of Opel Corsa OPC Rallye Cup
The rally Waldviertel, the traditional season-end of the Austrian Rally Championship, every year is a major challenge for teams and cars, but this year it was particularly difficult. Responsible for: Extreme weather conditions that brought rain, fog and even snow in the forest area. Accordingly, hard were the conditions on the special stages: mud, water crossings and deep ruts made the drivers a hard time, more than a third of all competing teams not crossed the finish line - even three Opel teams were involved: The fixed as champion Daniel Wollinger slipped over an embankment and came by itself no longer return to the track, but his car remained virtually undamaged.

Worse, it caught two other duos: Koni Friesenegger rolled over on the first day, repaired the car, drove the second day continued - and rolled over again, but much more intense. Koni and his co Christoph case remained unhurt but thank God, like Daniel and his co Zieser Christoph Woegerer that were stuck with its Corsa OPC between two trees. Thus, a sovereign propelled Wolfram Doberer brought with gecastetem copilot Josef Hauer for the first time this season the Cup win and the vice-title in the overall standings - especially given his favorite rally, Lower Austria is still a renowned gravel specialist. Second place went to Christoph Leitgeb / Sabrina Hartenberger who had thus in the battle for the vice-title at a disadvantage compared to Doberer.

Third place went to Gerhard Dworak, who trusted this time for the announcement of novel Karger and was rewarded for his consistent performance last season. The successful despite the failures season finale Saturday afternoon was enriched by a concert by chart-topper GuGabriel who knew the burst filled Opel Corsa OPC Rallye Cup VIP tent "unplugged" and her latest hit convince "Salvation". In the evening there was then locally to the ceremony - and Cup organizer Willi Stengg the opportunity to let the past-season premieres happen a little revue: "" That was probably the most difficult rally of the season. Have technically held that all cars, shows that we have built a top car. Too bad that not all of the finish came, but that was expected because of the situation almost. "

Opel Corsa OPC Rallye Cup on Rallye Waldviertel (Team Gerhard Dworak and Roman Karger)
"Thank goodness, the Corsa OPC very safe and there is no one injured. Congratulations to Wolfram Doberer to victory and the vice-title - because you can see that he is very fast on gravel, first and second, much routine. Even if Daniel (Wollinger, note) is slipped up this time, I want to congratulate him once again to the title - the early praise was justified. That of Christoph (Leitgeb, note) is almost as fast, he has shown a few times, unfortunately, he has brought to the title by two slip-chances. Great that Gerhard Dworak just with this extremely difficult rally for the first time on the podium is that he has earned. For the Koni (Friesenegger, note) I the unfortunate season-end'm sorry, he was almost at the top part off. Said Daniel Zieser still missing the experience and stability, but this can in the next year ausschauen completely different! Anyway, we are very happy with this inaugural year. Now it goes to the planning for the next season, where we expected to four new teams are welcome!

The pilots' voices:

Daniel Wollinger: "We were great the way and have made clear in the cup, as when braking in a curve, the wheels locked and we slid down an embankment. The car is not damaged, but without the help we did not want to leave there. What a pity! "

Christoph Friesenegger: "We are, despite yesterday's accident drove very fast and it was fun even under these conditions. But then we are in a right-Four slipped on loose ground in a ditch and it took us about four times to beat. Nothing has happened, but now there's a lot of work over the winter ... "

Wolfram Doberer: "The goal is achieved, we would be second in the Cup. Pity the Daniel has failed, that would have been exciting. Many many thanks to my two mechanic Luke and Andi - we have the whole year had no defect. And of course a special thanks to Kumho, as well as at the district and leaves Opel Öllinger! "

Daniel Zieser: "That was a bad accident. We flew by between two trees, where is not really room for a Corsa OPC. Accordingly, looking out the car. At least we are doing well - but the end of the season should have been different. "

Gerhard Dworak: "Except slippery, it was just more slippery. But happy about third place I 'am of course very much. A big thank you to our sponsors and the mechanics! "

Sabrina Hartenberger: "This was by far the most difficult rally. Wolfram has had an advantage with his routine and was insanely fast. In the afternoon we turned and risked nothing. I won here, the co-pilot rating and the co-pilot vice-title in the 2WD Championship, which I am very pleased! "

Final standings after 15 of 15 special stages:
1. Wolfram Doberer / Josef Hauer 2:13:37,0 minutes
2. Christoph Leitgeb / Sabrina Hartenberger + 1:56,9 minutes
3. Gerhard Dworak / Roman Karger + 15:57,2

Standings after six of six rallies:

!NEW! Opel Cascada: Athletic, glamorous midsize convertible

  • Elongated 4 seater midsize convertible with muscular, timeless elegance
  • Sophisticated, high quality soft-top system operates at driving speeds of up to 50 km/h
  • Outstanding body stiffness combined with HiPerStrut front suspension technology
  • Broad powertrain line-up with new generation direct injection gasoline 1.6 SIDI Turbo
Back to the most intense automotive experiences: cruising along with the sun softly warming your skin; feeling the air thickening in your open hand as speed increases; tipping back your head and finding no limit to your view, just diving into the deep blue sky. These are typical Cascada moments. The Cascada, Opel’s new all season convertible due to be launched in early 2013, is a classy four seater with an elongated silhouette and a high-quality soft top. Heading to the top of Opel’s line-up, the Cascada is a midsize convertible not only by its size (length: 4,697 mm; width 1,840 mm excl. mirrors) but also by its allure and the premium technologies and features it offers.

After several generations of compact Kadett and Astra cabriolets, Opel returns to an older tradition of prestigious and rare midsize, four seat soft-top convertibles from the fifties and sixties – like the Kapitän and the Rekord – but in a new, refreshing way and with the best of modern technologies. The Cascada provides a sharp driving experience thanks to its super rigid body, HiPerStrut front suspension and FlexRide adaptive damping system. Its driver and passengers can enjoy the open-air feeling thanks to the premium soft top that can be opened at the touch of a button in 17 seconds while driving at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Electric seat belt presenters, exclusive Nappa leather and ventilated, ergonomic seats as well as invisible, watchful safety systems make life serene and safe.

Attitude: Pure soft-top elegance enables full open-air enjoyment
With its broad stance and a flowing continuity of sculptured shapes that is typical for Opel, the Cascada design reflects the classic and timeless elegance of the “Grandes Routières” of a bygone and glamorous age. With the top down for open-air drives, the Cascada has a perfectly clean profile: behind the fast and gracefully raked A pillar, no roof top cover or visible rollover protection disturbs the silhouette. Below this clarity and to add some drama, the subtle Opel blade on the lower body side is mirrored in its upper part by a sharp crease that swings upward to the rear end, into the wraparound rear lights. The gently upswept waistline is highlighted by a horizontal chrome strip that elegantly sweeps around the cockpit, fluidly and elegantly marking the boundary between the roof top and the body.

Tastefully sculpted in a purposeful power bulge, the bonnet tops a deepened front grille with bold chrome applications. The fog lights are carried in two overturned shark fin elements, which are visually enhanced and balanced by chrome inserts. Both using LED technology, the daytime running lights in the headlamps and the rear lights incorporate the Opel typical wing signature. In the rear, the LED lighting modules are diffused for giving a solid and sharp light signal - a typical feature of premium class cars. A proud chrome strip linking the lighting units set into the boot lid balances the front chrome trim.

Top quality materials selected from suppliers of the most prestigious premium cabriolets are used to build Opel Cascada’s soft top. It benefits from superior acoustic and thermal insulation thanks to a special layer of polyester fleece between the outside layer and the interior lining. An electro-hydraulic mechanism activated via a switch located between the front seats opens the roof in 17 seconds at driving speeds of up to 50 km/h – placing the Cascada among the benchmarks in roof top operation. In addition, key operated remote control for opening and closing the top is standard in all Cascada models. Three soft top colors are available at launch. They can be coordinated with ten different body colors.

Indulgence: Crafted cockpit with outstanding comfort and functionality
The Cascada’s cockpit offers a striking, sculptural yet sporty design highlighted by precise, handcrafted details. The lines of the wing-shaped instrument panel, which features real stitching on soft, wrapped surfaces, flow into the doors, dynamically embracing the front-seat occupants. All new richly trimmed seats are offered in several elegantly embossed fabrics and leathers. The up level AGR certified ergonomic seats are wrapped in rich, soft Nappa leather and benefit from heating and ventilation systems: on hot, sunny days, fresh air is drawn through the holes in the perforated leather to increase front occupants’ comfort. Securing them is easy and comfortable due to the electric seat belt extender which brings the seat belt within close reach using a telescoping arm. An electric Easy Entry system makes access to the rear seat swift and comfortable.
The Opel Cascada benefits from great storage and stowage capacity for a convertible, allowing comfortable, all season daily use. Several useful, large storage spaces have been placed around the driver: in the door, in and under the instrument panel and, thanks to a standard Electric Park Brake, in the center console – just where you need storage space the most. The minimum load volume with the roof open is 280 liters, and up to 350 liters are available when the soft top is closed. To extend its load volume or transport exceptionally long objects, the Opel Cascada benefits from the FlexFold system that electrically releases and folds down the 50:50 split rear seat back rests – a feature that cannot be offered in hard-top cabriolets.

Excellence: Superior body stiffness combines with outstanding chassis technology
Body stiffness is a key criterion for open roof vehicles; it has a high impact on their driving behavior, steering precision, acoustics, safety and comfort and also conveys a clear feeling of their genuine quality. The Opel Cascada provides an superior balance between torsional and bending stiffness thanks to several measures including impressive underbody crossed steel bars and reinforced rocker profiles. Compared to Opel’s previous generation cabriolet, the Astra TwinTop, the Cascada’s body is 43% stiffer in torsion and 10% in bending. This layout provides a solid basis for the suspension and contributes towards significant reduction in noise, vibrations and harshness.
The new midsize Opel Cascada naturally has a more impressive footprint than the 2006 compact Astra Twin Top. The wheelbase is 71 mm longer, the front tread 56 mm and the rear tread 70 mm wider. That benefits handling and stability. The front axle of the Cascada features as standard the best of Opel chassis technology with the HiPerStrut layout that was initially developed for the Insignia OPC. HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut) separates the functions of damping and steering and provides highest traction and cornering precision as well as reduced torque steer and improved grip under all circumstances. The Opel Cascada has electrically powered rack-and-pinion steering with speed sensitive assistance. For more direct steering feel and precision, the electric motor is mounted on the rack, as opposed to the base of the steering column. FlexRide, Opel’s integrated, fully adaptive chassis control system is of course available in the Cascada. It enhances its ride and handling performance and safety as it adapts to the driving situation, driving style as well as the drivers’ preferences. The Opel Cascada can be equipped with 17” to 20” wheels. Brake discs have sizes of up to 326 mm in front and 325 mm in rear.

Performance: New generation direct Injection 1.6 SIDI Turbo gasoline engine
A broad powertrain line-up will be available in the Opel Cascada convertible. The 1.4 gasoline Turbo opens the portfolio; it is combined with a manual 6-speed transmission and is available in two output versions of 88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp, both delivering up to 220 Nm thanks to an overboost function. On the diesel side, the 2.0 CDTI with 121 kW/165 hp comes with either a manual or an automatic 6 speed transmission. This engine delivers up to 380 Nm when its overboost is active.
The highlight in the Cascada powertrain line-up will be the 1.6 SIDI Turbo ECOTEC gasoline engine. This midsize direct injection unit is part of a fully new generation that makes its debut in early 2013 and is geared to very smooth ride and torque delivery and great fuel economy. It delivers 125 kW/170 hp, between 1,650 and 3,200 rpm – and 280 Nm thanks to an overboost function. This engine will be available with manual and automatic 6 speed transmissions. The new, low friction 6 speed automatic transmission in the Cascada features an Active Select function that allows manual shifting for a more sporty driving experience.
More powerful versions of both gasoline and diesel engines will be launched in the Cascada at a later stage.

Serenity: Sophisticated technology and safety features
The Cascada combines an open-air driving experience with the best of Opel technology. This includes the AFL+ Adaptive Forward Lighting system with up to 11 automatic functions, the second generation Opel Eye front camera with its new, extended functionalities - enhanced Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW), new Following Distance Indication (FDI) and Forward Collision Alert (FCA), a rear view camera and an Advanced Park Assist that eases parking maneuvers, an ultra sonic based Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA), ergonomic front seats, a heated steering wheel, and Hill Start Assist (HSA).

The Cascada’s extremely rigid passenger cell is mainly fabricated from high strength steel for the least deformation and largest possible survival space in crash conditions. Doors have diagonally mounted ultra high strength steel beams and beltline reinforcements. The A pillars supporting the windscreen are in press hardened steel. In case of roll over, pyrotechnically activated spring loaded high strength bars automatically deploy behind the rear seats. These pop ups are also triggered during other severe impacts – when airbags are deployed – in order to prepare the vehicle for possible secondary impacts and resulting roll over. Front seats both benefit from two way active headrests and double seat belt pretensioners and even the two rear seats have seat belt pretensioners.

New Opel Mokka SUV: Compact in Size, Big in Attitude

  • First vehicle by German manufacturer to enter sub-compact SUV market
  • Opel introduces technologies such as adaptive lighting and front camera to segment
  • Efficient, intelligent All wheel drive system automatically adjusts to drive conditions
  • Bold design, big on flexibility and agility with low fuel consumption
  • “Made in Germany” chassis for European needs
  • Already more than 40,000 orders received; prices start at 18,990 euro (Germany)

The all new Opel Mokka has captured the hearts of its customers. Ready for its sales launch, more than 40,000 orders were received for the SUV throughout Europe. Demand has been particularly strong in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Russia. With the Mokka which has been available to order since June, Opel is the first German manufacturer to enter the rapidly growing segment of sub-compact Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV-B segment). The 1.6 liter ecoFLEX entry level Mokka variant with 85 kw/115 hp can be ordered from 18,990 euro (rrp. Germany including VAT). In addition, a turbocharged gasoline unit offering 103 kW/140 hp of output and a diesel 1.7 liter engine variant with 96 kW/130 hp are included in the Mokka’s powertrain line-up.

Despite its 4.28 meter measurement, the Mokka generously accommodates five people in a commanding position. It also delivers on Opel’s promise to combine attractive design with innovative technologies and upmarket functionalities, making them accessible to a wider segment of customers.

Front or All Wheel Drive: Dynamic driving for active lifestyles
The Opel Mokka blends functionality and a comfortable, high seating position with a flavor of adventure. One of the main focal points of the Mokka's development was the chassis which was designed and fine tuned in Germany. The Mokka chassis has been tailored to the daily needs of European customers and is also very suitable for off-road conditions.
Apart from front wheel drive (FWD), the Mokka can be fitted with an all wheel drive (AWD) technology for better traction and handling. The AWD technology is efficient, clever and affordable. The main components of the AWD system are the front axle differential, the cardan shaft, the 4x4 rear axle drive and the control module as well as the electro magnetic multi plate clutch. In addition sensors constantly supply the control modules with data. When the road surface is dry, the front wheels drive the vehicle forward which means that fuel consumption is kept low. Depending on the road conditions the range varies from 100 percent front wheel drive to a maximum distribution of torque of 50 percent on the front and rear axle, for example when the roads are covered in a thick film of water.
Opel Mokka Adaptive 4x4 system
When requires it, the electronic torque transfer device (TTD) automatically and seamlessly sends torque to the rear wheels. The AWD system further sharpens the already agile handling characteristics of the Mokka. This especially noticeable when the car has to take off quickly or negotiates corners at higher speeds. It is activated automatically within a fraction of a second as soon as there is wheel slip due to a lack of traction. The system also realizes when no AWD is required. It offers even better handling performance in bends and provides maximum traction in those situations. The AWD system with all its components only weighs 65 kilograms so that the car remains efficient and environmentally friendly.
Opel Mokka Chasis
The Mokka chassis ensures maximum ride comfort and handling performance, even in difficult road conditions. To achieve this Opel engineers further developed tried and tested MacPherson struts on the front axle. Side load springs were added to compensate the lateral forces. Dual path strut mounts, strong stabilizers and double bonded handling bushings were also applied to improve handing and performance on the road as well as noise and vibration reduction. On the rear suspension, the Opel engineering team included a U section tubular shaped torsion beam ahead of the wheels.
In addition, to get the most out of the vehicle chassis, the Opel engineers opted for state of the art Electric Power Steering (EPS) which is standard kit throughout Europe and provides more speed sensitive steering assist with great responsiveness.

Agile and efficient – Two gasoline and one diesel engine
1.4 Turbo ECOTEC gasoline engine
Power is provided by three efficient engines. All manual transmissions are equipped with the fuel saving Opel Start/Stop system. The gasoline offer comprises an 85 kW/115 hp, 1.6 liter naturally aspirated engine with 155 Nm torque that uses 6.5 liters of fuel on 100 kilometers and emits 153 g/km CO2 and a 103 kW/140 hp 1.4 l Turbo with 200 Nm of torque. The 1.4 Turbo will initially be available with the same manual transmission but later on also with automatic transmission. The manual six speed 4x4 turbocharged Mokka reaches a top speed of 190 km/h. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h can be achieved in 9.9 seconds. The fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 6.4 l/100 km, equivalent to 149 g/km CO2.

1.7 CDTI ECOTEC Turbo diesel engine
Customers who prefer diesel engines can order the Mokka with a 1.7 liter turbocharged CDTI unit with 96 kW/I30 hp and maximum torque of 300 Nm. This engine unit is available with six speed manual plus front or all wheel drive, or as a six speed automatic with front wheel drive. As an FWD with a manual gear box the diesel unit only needs 4.5 liters of fuel in the combined cycle per 100 kilometers. This is equivalent to 120 g/km CO2. The 1.7 CDTI is thus one of the most fuel efficient vehicles of its segment. The performance figures speak for themselves: with a six speed manual gear box and front wheel drive the Mokka achieves a top speed of 187 km/h. A sprint from standstill to 100 km/h only takes 10.5 seconds.

Key driving assistance systems with exclusive safety and comfort features
Opel Mokka - Passive Safety
With the all-new Mokka SUV, Opel is for the first time bringing its wealth of unique, German engineered driving assistance systems to the sub-compact SUV segment. Technologies that enhance both safety and comfort and are exclusive to Opel are now being made available to a wider segment of customers. They include sophisticated Electronic Stability Program (ESP®Plus) with Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Hill Descent Control (HDC) for a more comfortable drive in hill terrain. The traction control which is standard across all Mokka versions acts like a limited slip differential. It prevents wheel spin and supports the all-wheel drive system of the Mokka with special algorithms to enhance the car’s handling.
Opel Mokka - Hill Start Assist (HSA)
Opel Mokka - Hill Descent Control  (HDC)
Another key driver assistance system that is available in the Mokka is Opel’s Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL+) which is based on third generation Bi-Xenon headlamps. It adapts its intensity and range for best possible illumination of urban and country roads as well as highways. Its functions include adverse weather light, increased high beam, static bending light, dynamic bending light, daytime running light with LED and High Beam Assist. The latter adjusts the high beams automatically so that following or oncoming traffic is not dazzled.
Opel Mokka - Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL+)
The second generation Opel Eye front camera provides the basis for the Forward Collision Alert (FCA), Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). The Forward Collision Alert (FCA) warns the driver with a loud alarm as well as a visual warning if a collision with the preceding vehicle is imminent. Apart from the Lane Departure Warning that alerts drivers when they unintentionally stray out of their lane, engineers also further developed the Traffic Sign Recognition system. Apart from round road signs that new front camera now also recognizes rectangular signs for motorways or play areas on street as well as any other speed-related restrictions. The camera can also pick up dynamic LED displays. In that respect it helps to prevent contraventions of road traffic regulations or accidents caused by tiredness. Parking is now made easier thanks to a rear view camera with its parking sensors at the front and the rear.

Opel Mokka - Rear Camera
Healthy and comfortable: Ergonomic AGR seats and FlexFix bike carrier system
Opel Mokka interior with ergonomic AGR seats
The Opel Mokka can be equipped with ergonomic seats that have been certified by the independent healthy back experts AGR (“Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.”). The 8-way adjustable driver seat is the first time AGR has approved a seat in the SUV-B segment with its seal. The seat had to meet a list of ten criteria including four way lordosis support and that the seatback contours had to adapt exactly to the natural curvature of the spine. In addition, the ergonomic seat offers many additional adjustments such as tilting, extra lumbar support and thigh extension. The head rests are four way adjustable.

The loading capacity of the Mokka can be expanded with the second generation FlexFix bike carrier system. The optionally available enhanced storage system exclusive to Opel is integrated in the rear bumper of the vehicle and is always on board. The standard version of the FlexFix system when mounted on the Mokka is geared towards carrying one bicycle of up to 30 kg. Thanks to a clip-on adaptor a further two bicycles can be transported which increases the total load capacity up to 60 kilograms. Even when fully loaded, the FlexFix system can be tilted so that the tailgate of the vehicle can be opened easily, providing quick access to the Mokka’s luggage compartment. In addition, the rear bench of the Mokka can be folded down in a 60-40 ratio so that an additional flat loading bay area is created. With all of these elements the Mokka is the perfect solution for people with active lifestyles and high standards.

Bold SUV design combined with refined functionality
The new Opel SUV reflects the traditional strengths of the brand: driving dynamics, flexibility for everyday life and emotional design. With the Mokka, Opel’s design philosophy of blending “sculptural artistry with German precision” finds a new expression in a compact SUV. The Opel Mokka displays a bold attitude with sculpted and elegant traits while retaining a sporty edge with muscular and athletic body lines. The pronounced front grille, the protective cladding around the bumpers and wheel arches are energized by Opel’s typical “blade” on the bodyside that sweeps upwards to the rear. The Mokka’s sporty and muscular build is also re-enforced by its higher ground clearance which also makes it suitable for gravel roads, as well as its tread width of 1,540 mm.

The interior of the new Mokka is also typical for Opel. Sculptural design cues are captured through the Opel brand signature wing shaped instrument panel and also in the artfully sculpted surfaces in the doors. Characteristic Opel values such as versatility and user friendly functionality are also visible: from the dual glove box configuration of the instrument panel, the closed storage in the tunnel console to the deep lower pockets in both the front and rear doors. With up to 1,372 liter of loading space and up to 19 storage locations including side pockets at the front that can store 1.5 liter bottles, the functional needs of families have been clearly accounted for.

Thriftiest Opel diesel ever with only 88 g/km CO2

  • New milestone from Opel: Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFlex consumes just 3.3 l/100 km
  • Enhancements to engine and transmission further reduce consumption
  • Improved chassis layout ensures more driving comfort

The thriftiest Opel Corsa is now even more economical and environmentally friendly. The 70 kW/95 hp three door Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX with Start/Stop technology needs just 3.3 liters diesel per 100 kilometers which corresponds to an exemplary CO2 value of only 88 g/km (five-door: 3.4 l/100 km and 89 g/km CO2). This makes the Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFlex the most economical and fuel efficient diesel model Opel has ever built.

1.3 CDTI Opel EcoTec diesel engine
“The 88-gram Corsa once again highlights Opel’s pioneering role in the development of sustainable mobility solutions. In just five years, from the first Corsa ecoFLEX to today, we have been able to reduce consumption and CO2 emissions by 26 percent – while at the same time increasing performance by over 26 percent. Our customers appreciate this, as does the environment,” says Mike Ableson, Opel Vice President Engineering, summarizing the benefits of the fuel saving star.

Art of engineering according to Opel: Seven percent lower consumption
While the last generation Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX from 2011 was already extremely frugal with consumption of 3.5 liters diesel per 100 km and emissions of 94 g/km CO2, the latest reductions of 0.2 liters and six grams CO2 make it the absolute fuel saving champion in the Opel diesel portfolio. A number of enhancements were made to reduce consumption and emissions by almost another seven percent. The turbodiesel was equipped with a variable displacement oil pump that delivers only the necessary oil pressure. It varies oil volume depending on the load in order to reduce the energy needed for oil circulation to a minimum. The use of a special low viscosity transmission oil also contributes to efficient fuel consumption. These measures are rounded off by adjustment of engine mappings in the engine control module.

From November 2012 the Corsa will also feature the new generation of Opel engineered manual transmissions that ensure even more precise and smooth gear shifting. Engineers achieved a reduction of friction and shift forces as well as gearshift travel. The base transmission was comprehensively reworked: new gears and modified parts including shift rods and the fork shaft were used. The end result is high shift comfort and optimized operation in cold and warm conditions. New 185/65 R15 low rolling resistance tires also add to the Corsa’s eco friendliness.

Even with all this economy, performance is not compromised. 190 Nm of torque is available between 1,750 and 3,250 rpm. The 70 kW/95 hp turbodiesel accelerates the Corsa from zero to 100 km/h in 12.3 seconds and takes it to a maximum speed of 177 km/h.

Optimized chassis: More driving comfort with agile handling
Opel engineers also optimized the chassis for all Corsa variants (except the OPC Nürburgring Edition). The suspension and damper system now compensates for uneven road surfaces even more gently and smoothly, thus improving driving comfort. This is of particular advantage when driving on rough roads or during low-speed driving in urban areas. It now allows environmentally conscious ecoFLEX drivers to enjoy a chassis that makes no compromises in terms of agility and handling in spite of its comfortable layout.

The Opel Corsa has been an integral part of individual mobility in Europe for 30 years now. Currently it accounts for over 28 percent of Opel/Vauxhall’s total sales volume. Around 12 million units of four model generations have been sold to date. The Corsa is available with diesel, gasoline and LPG propulsion with outputs ranging from 51 kW/70 hp to 155 kW/210 hp.

ecoFLEX models and electric Ampera: Sustainability in best Opel fashion
ecoFLEX are the variants in Opel model lines that are especially economical without compromising driving fun, performance or safety. Currently the automaker offers nearly 70 ecoFLEX variants. In addition to the new 88 gram Corsa, highlights include the Opel Astra 1.7 CDTI ecoFLEX with 81 kW/110 hp and 96 kW/130 hp that needs only 3.7 liters diesel per 100 km and emits 99 g/km CO2, the 70 kW/95 hp Meriva 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX (4.1 l/100 km and 109 g/km CO2), the Insignia 2.0 CDTI ecoFLEX with 81 kW/110 hp and 96 kW/130 hp (4.3 l/100 km and 114 g/km CO2) and the Zafira Tourer 2.0 CDTI ecoFLEX with 96 kW/130 hp (4.5 l/100 km and 119 g/km CO2).

The eco friendly model portfolio is completed by the Opel Ampera. Opel combines everyday suitability with revolutionary, sustainable propulsion technology in the “Car of the Year 2012”, as the Ampera is the first electric car that seamlessly fits into consumers’ lives without requiring any changes to daily habits.

  • 33 percent higher power and torque
  • Class leading refinement

Opel revealed details of its new midsize gasoline engine family at the Aachen Colloquium in Germany. The all-new 1.6 liter, four cylinder, SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) ECOTEC Turbo engines, which begin Opel’s renewal of its powertrain portfolio, bring significant benefits to the customer in terms of fuel consumption, performance and refinement, while affecting the environment as little as possible. CO2 emissions and fuel consumption have been cut by 13 percent compared to the predecessor engine, while peak torque and peak power have been increased by up to 33 percent.

The new engine family comprises a 1.6 liter Eco Turbo with 125 KW/170 hp and 280 Nm peak torque, as well as a Performance Turbo variant offering 147 kW/200 hp and 300 Nm peak torque. The 170 hp engine has been developed with fuel economy, high low end torque and elasticity in mind, while the performance of the 200 hp unit makes it the benchmark in its class. The roll out of the new engine family – which has been developed in Ruesselsheim, Germany – will begin in early 2013.

Opel ECOTEC 1.6 SIDI Turbo EURO 6 Engine
“The new midsize gasoline engine family is the first milestone in the fundamental renewal of our powertrain portfolio. Not only do these downsized engines deliver smooth acceleration and strong pulling power, they are also highly refined and environmentally compatible,” says Global Assistant Chief Engineer MGE, Marcel Frensch.

At the heart of the new SIDI ECOTEC Turbo family is an all-new cylinder block able to withstand peak cylinder pressure of 130 bar. Cast iron was selected as the preferred material for the cylinder block in combination with an aluminum bedplate.

Class leading refinement and performance
Opel has designed the new midsize gasoline engine family to be a leader not only in emissions and fuel consumption, but also in terms of refinement and performance.

Key development objectives for refinement were low overall radiated noise and vibration levels, and no unusual sounds. Achieving these goals enabled vehicle integration that can tune primary engine orders in the induction and exhaust systems to meet specific vehicle objectives. The excellent acoustic and vibration performance of the engine is crowned by the cam cover, which is decoupled from the cylinder head via specific fasteners and a sealing system designed for high temperatures, due to the nearby turbocharger.

As a result of these “sound engineering” measures, the customer perceives quiet and smooth idling, no unusual noises throughout the operating range, and a pleasant sound quality even at high speeds and loads.

Balance shafts are industry first for 1.6 liter four cylinder engines
Opel’s SIDI ECOTEC is the only engine in its class to offer balance shafts. The two balance shafts are inserted in tunnels from the rear end of the cylinder block and are driven by an inverted tooth chain. The exhaust side shaft features cast iron gears to reverse rotational direction of the exhaust shaft. The optional system offsets the vibrations inherent in the design of four cylinder engines and thus helps to maximize comfort and reduce noise to a minimum.

Turbocharging for high low end torque
The design and sizing of the turbocharging system plays a key role in enabling downsized engines to deliver excellent performance and drivability, while meeting CO2 targets.

Smaller displacement engines with high specific torque and boost levels require fast transient response, especially at low engine speeds, in order to be a valid replacement for larger displacement engines. Thanks to its specially designed turbines, the midsize gas engine’s turbocharger provides response that is usually generated by twin scroll turbines on larger engines.

The engine retains the proven concept of a turbine integrated exhaust manifold. This design was chosen instead of a twin scroll concept because of its packaging and manufacturing advantages. Although the turbocharger has identical interfaces, each variant of the new SIDI ECOTEC engine features a dedicated turbo aerodynamic.

The compressors are designed to deliver high low end torque without generating noticeable aerodynamic sounds. Combined with low and high pressure resonators, airborne noises effects like hiss, pulsation and blade pass noise are almost completely suppressed. With additional aspects like air handling, duct design and control strategies for let off noise, the new engine benefits from an aggressive boost strategy without the typically associated turbo related acoustic degradation.

Compared to the predecessor engine the new SIDI ECOTEC turbo delivers a remarkable improvement in elasticity, for example, reducing the time for 80 km/h to 120 km/h fifth gear acceleration by about 20 percent.

Direct Injection for High fuel Efficiency and Performance
In addition to refinement and performance, high fuel economy and low emissions were the main development objectives of the new 1.6 liter engines. Opel’s engineers therefore selected a central direct-injection fuel system, for optimum fuel efficiency and minimal emissions.

The central location of spark plug and injector over the combustion chamber, and their orientation parallel to the crankshaft, forms a compact package with the capability to support homogeneous and stratified engine operation.

The valve train is operated by low friction hydraulic roller finger followers and driven by a timing chain with a maintenance free hydraulic tensioner. Acoustics are further improved by the inverted teeth of the cam drive chain. For mass reduction the midsize gasoline engine features a two piece crankcase design, supported at the lower end by a die cast aluminum bedplate.

The cylinder block is manufactured using an innovative thin wall casting method. This allows the integration of different functional features directly into the raw block and offers potential to reduce production time.
The engine uses a broached press fit between the cylinder block and the bedplate instead of dowels, in order to optimize the main bearing shape as well as its positional accuracy. The structural design considers the engine’s use in a variety of vehicle applications, allowing minimum integration effort and consistent part interchangeability.

The structural benefit derived from the combination of a forged steel crankshaft, optimized main bearing journal diameters, and iron main bearing cap inserts results in minimized noise and vibration at mid and high rpm.

Two different pistons have been designed for the Eco and Performance Turbo engines. Each has a dedicated top land including a small bowl. A cast iron ring carrier adapted to the high cylinder pressures is common to each piston. The PVD coated first piston ring is an additional friction reduction measure.

“Flex Plant” in Hungary is home to the engine renewal
Production of the new 1.6 liter SIDI ECOTEC Turbo engine alongside the other new engine families will be at the Szentgotthárd plant in Hungary and will begin in late 2012. The factory uses the “Flex Plant” concept which enables gasoline and diesel engines to be built on a shared assembly line.

Decision in the Opel Corsa OPC Rallye Cup at the Autumn Rallye

Decision in the Opel Corsa OPC Rallye Cup at the Autumn Rallye: slips Christoph Leitgeb, Daniel Wollinger brings victory and title !

  • Daniel Wollinger / Bernhard Holzer triumph with the fourth victory also in the Cup
  • Koni and Christoph Friesenegger drive with repaired Corsa in second place
  • Wolfram Doberer even during the autumn rallye Leiben be "subscribed" in third place

Daniel Wollinger brings victory and title in Opel Corsa OPC Rallye Cup !

The final round of the Austrian Rally Challenge, short ARC formed the stage for the penultimate round of the Opel Corsa OPC Rally Cup - and what was that for a stage: Bright sunshine, temperatures around 25 degrees - in short, a glorious autumn Saturday between Wachau Valley and the southern forest district, where eight demanding special stages were to be done before a wonderful backdrop.

Focus of course were the two major opponents for the overall victory in the Cup, Daniel Wollinger and Christoph Leitgeb, you could feel the tension already in the service park literally feel. The situation was not easy for both, Daniel Wollinger but had a distinct advantage: Thanks to its projection point he did not necessarily have to be first, Christoph Leitgeb contrast was in a tight spot. He had to win in order to postpone the decision on the Cup overall title still up to the end of October can Waldviertel Rally.

Accordingly, the Eisner Car Rally Team pilot "attack from the first meter of" promised - which he implemented then: On the first special stage he was only 1.1 seconds behind Daniel Wollinger, this time, incidentally, was traveling with Walter Pfaff Huemer co. The "hundredth battle" which had marked the two runs in Weiz and Admont, seemed to go on so.

The drumbeat was then already on special stage two: Leitgeb caught in a braking zone a few bumps and slid with locked wheels into the undergrowth.

The Opel Corsa OPC was almost completely undamaged, but at the point no spectators, who would liberate the unfortunate Leitgeb and his co-driver Sabrina Hartenberger from the awkward position were you. Thus, the preliminary decision was: Should Daniel Wollinger the goal of autumn rally - no matter in which position - reach, he would cup winner. And that's what the young man succeeded in Styria sovereign. He finished fourth out of five Cup victories, went on overall rank 11 and chose to prematurely Opel Corsa OPC Rally Cup Champion. Second place was more than deserved to Koni and Christoph Friesenegger who, thanks to the tireless efforts of their "Opel Hojas Rally Team NOE" to the ARBÖ rally badly battered Corsa get fit in time - a great success for the duo of Lower Austria, the so best local heroes were.

Took third place - once again - Wolfram Doberer, this time again with the announcement of Julia Baier. The fast man from "Bezirksblätter Racing Team" seems downright a "subscription" to third place to have - in the forest area rally but it should still go forward. Finally back to the finish, and Christopher Daniel Zieser Woegerer came from the "Styrian Opel Rally Team", even if their Opel Corsa OPC in the end had a few scratches. Gerhard and Romana Dworak ("Remus Racing") rounded out the Cup standings from the fifth-placed and showed in their home rally a good performance. The last round of the Opel Corsa OPC Rally Cup 2012 will take place at the Waldviertel rally on 26 and 27 October around Horn in Lower Austria.

The pilots' voices:

Daniel Wollinger: "I'm overjoyed. We did not make the slightest mistake, drove in 91 teams that started in eleventh place overall, it was a perfect performance. Too bad that the Cup was decided by a slip-up, but that's rallying. For now Waldviertel I'm very relaxed. "

Christoph Friesenegger: "Just perfect! We wanted a good rally to thank our mechanics who repaired the car after the crash at the ARBÖ rally in record time. And we succeeded, we could even drive tactically afternoon. Only the starting position was a problem because we were in the dark. But Koni has put away the great accident and rode well. "

Wolfram Doberer: "As I predicted. Third place suits me really well apparently. Most importantly of all, we now ex-aequo with Christoph Leitgeb are second place overall in the Cup - the Rallye Waldviertel is interesting ... Many thanks to Karl Öllinger Opel Öllinger, who was now on the ground "!

Daniel Zieser: "At last we are back at the finish. However, we have re-installed a scary moment for the slip-up at the start of the rally was not without. Now I hope that the failure devil stays away. Celebrate unfortunately I can not, I have a fever and a sore throat and I just go to sleep ... "

Gerhard Dworak: "We were up to the afternoon tests only five seconds behind Daniel, but then I is only the talent and then the street assumed. Was but the bumper, but the time was gone. Overall, we are happy that the car is now! "

Christoph Leitgeb: "Obviously I'm very disappointed. But I had to attack from the first meter full. On the first special we have seen that we are fully here, on the second floor we have the waves dropped. Now we want to win at least still in the forest area - and it's full concentration is on 2013 "!
